Cat: JAZZR 033. Rel: 25 Apr 24
Robert "Dubwise" Browne - "Sun Goddess" (4:55)
Dean Fraser & Robert "Dubwise" Browne - "Mister Magic" (4:28)
Review: Here's a proper genre fusion for the dancehall heads. On his latest reissue, Robert 'Dubwise' Browne testifies to over 20 years of hitmaking with a standalone 7" edition of his remix of Ramsey Lewis' 'Sun Goddess', first released on Vortex in 2023. Whereas Lewis' original 70s funk version is a sweet and sunkissed headboard-licker with a simple backbeat, Browne prefers to cant things dubwise, swapping the aforementioned out for a phat dotted stomp. Clock the new pairing with Browne's version of Grover Washington's jazz-funk classic 'Mister Magic'.

D'ailie - "Live It Up" (instrumental) (4:13)
Review: This latest is a reissue of a Congress Productions EP featuring their seminal 'Neptune'. The much-sampled early 80s jazz-funk classic comes in original form next to two unreleased cuts. The first is a rare boogie cut 'Live It Up' that has been extended for more dancefloor heft having first been dropped under the D'aile' alias as a B-side. Then comes 'Kevin's Funk' which is named in reference to Incognito trumpet player Kevin Robinson, who played as part of a Congress-associated line-up for this session.

Sort Of (3:48)
Review: After his debut album E o que a casa oferece from 2023, Gabriel da Rosa is back with another silken bossa nova record, in homage to the musical style that raised him. 'Cafune' was first released digitally a follow-up single to the alnbum, one which rounded out the year that said debut was released, and which was written for the soundtrack to the film film All Happy Families (Haroula Rose). Now an authentic 12" version, the song is here backed by the B-side 'Sort Of', an impressive desert passage through refractive, rainbow dream pop.

Dalila - "Canto Chorando" (4:22)
Neyde Alexandre - "Perplexidade" (2:22)
Review: The Brazil 45s / Mr Bongo outlet is back with its classic moves, coming through with some truly special soul blends out of the Brazilian golden era. Dalila and Neyde Alexandre feature in this latest 7", the former with 1968's "Canto Chorado", a slow-burning bubble of funky exotica - surely impossible to find in its original shade - and the latter with a funky little bomb from 1971 by the name of "Perplexidade" - surely the smoothest, sexiest soul number out this week! Lovely stuff.

Wilson Das Neves - "Pick Up The Pieces" (3:13)
Som Tres - "Tanga" (2:04)
Review: Mr Bongo restock a brilliant 7" in their signature Brazil 45s series. The nineteenth to grace it, this blue-starred slice of small wax shone a light on Wilson das Neves' brilliant cover of Average White Band's 'Pick Up The Pieces' on the A, as well as a Mr Bongo fave on the B, Som Tres' potent samba-funk overflow 'Tanga'. The former flexes the historic muscles of a mythic Brazilian percussionist and vibesman, lending fidgety soft feels to AWB's already lull-lifting concoction; then 'Tanga' contrasts to this sense of measuredness with pure animal verve, as Tres' calls out to his bandmates commandingly amid whirlwinds of piano and drums.

It is one of those that will always get a good reaction and is always worth having in the collection. When The Music's Over (9:50)
I Don't Fuck Around (6:19)
Review: This project stems from the mutual admiration between Daru Jones and Devonne "DJ" Harrison who, upon discovering their collaborations with Jack White, had the idea of blending rock with jazz. DJ Harrison's vintage keyboard skills and Daru's versatility made them perfect for such a rock-influenced project. Legendary guitarist Doyle Bramhall II, a longtime friend of Mr. Mandel, was ideal for the guitar role and after several years they finally got together to record this album in 2022. The result is a first 12" single, mastered at 45 rpm for exceptional sound. Here's hoping there will be more to come.

Moon Over Rio (3:23)
Review: Stefano De Santis echoes purple dubstep on this live-feeled new electronic jazz dazzler, all improvised synth fusion that works well both as a danceable cut and a timeout moment. Just two tunes, 'Santos 79' and 'Moon Over Rio' come across like the morning and evening sides of De Santis' lifeworld; the former is a warm, glitzing sonic waxing, full of tweezy approach notes and Simmons drum 'pows'; the latter is a crepuscular waning, contrasting to the other by way of twinkly chime cascades and deeper chromatic blues.

Review: Lisa Decker makes a return with two new singles here that are taken from her upcoming album which is due in May of this year. It comes two years after her debut with the Japanese jazz trio Nautilus and marks something of a conceptual shift in her sound. 'Love & Hope' finds her turn in a stylish jazz vocal with funky bass loops and organic drums and percussion that straddle many different genres. 'Summer Child' then sinks into a nice smooth jazz-funk vibe with soft focus chords bringing a touch of class to her breezy vocals.

Review: Delvon Lamarr has been working his magic on the organ for years, backing up artists from Lucky Brown to Dog Shredder and The True Loves, but these days he puts his keys front and centre with his own sure-shot trio. Hot on the heels of 2021's widely celebrated I Told You So, Lamarr and his band are back once more with Cold As Weiss. As well as the sweet organ flexing, Jimmy James holds the groove down on drums while Daniel Weiss chops it up on the guitar. Seriously smooth and funky as hell, Lamarr brings it full force on this latest crucial cut.

Chez Madame La Baronne
Chez Madame La Baronne (Idjut Boys Fazz Junk version)
Review: Earlier this year, French disco and jazz-funk combo Chatobaron joined forces with fellow Parisian Dimitri From Paris for the rather good 'I Like (The Music That You Play)'. While that was a wholehearted disco workout, this speedy sequel sees the band (and their high-profile collaborator) explore their West Coast jazz-funk influences via an inspired workout full to bursting with killer instrumental solos, dusty grooves, memorable motifs and a genuinely killer, cowbell-sporting percussion brerak. This time round, there are no Dimitri From Paris remixes; instead, dubbed-out disco favourites the Idjut Boys are on hand to smother the track in tape echo and dub delay. The result is a typically spaced-out, low-slung affair that naturally makes the most of the band's killer bassline and layered percussion sounds.

Basa Basa (4:08)
Sahara Akwantuo (3:46)
Review: Those with a deep knowledge of Berlin's Ghanaian ex-pat "burger-highlife" scene may already be familiar with Lee Dodou, a singer who recorded a number of classic singles and albums during the 1980s as part of bands Georg Darko and Kantata. He retired from music in 1991, but has been persuaded to return to action by the Philophon team. This comeback single is pretty impressive all told, with A-side "Basa Basa" - a triumphantly celebratory chunk of 1960s "concert party" highlife rich in punchy horn lines and Dodou's full-throated vocals - being joined on the flipside by the slower, synth-laden "Sahara Akwantou". Brilliantly, the label describes this as "kraut-life" due to its unique (and rather good) fusion of highlife and German kosmiche.

Their latest 'Happening In The Streets' pays due homage to jazz-funk supergroup The Voltage Brothers, who released their discographic standouts in the 70s and 80s. Smokes & Mirrors (3:45)
Review: Three German instrumental talents - Chris Haertel, David Nesselhauf, Julian Gutjahr - make up The Drawbars, whom together describe their music as 'off jazz'. Following up their prior outing for Basel's BurningSole, on which two instrumental originals stuck out like raw thrums, their latest is an unexpected curveball in the form of a standout rare groove version of Billie Eilish's modern classic 'Bad Guy'. Riffing of its madhouse hooks by way of a watery high electric keyboard part, the essence of the track pairs timely well the Northern-soulful form of breaks, fills and bass jaunts. The B, 'Smokes & Mirrors', returns to OG songwriting and hears electric glisses and portamento synths dance across sultry, incense-filled rhythmatic rooms and navy-noted blueses.

These two tunes are taken from the album and come on 7" for useful DJ deployment. Review: BDQ's next limited 7" is a superb three-way collab between Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger & The Trinity. Their long-lost version of classic dancer 'Jeannine' is powered by wandering basslines and swinging Hammond Organ chords that bring warmth to the free-flowing jazz vocals up top. It has never before been on 45rpm and has been all but unknown for the last 50 years but was recently rediscovered while the label head was looking for something else for the recent 'Auger Incorporated' compilation on Soul Bank Music. Review: Milo MacMahon and Raul Indipwo aka Duo Ouro Negro, arrived in Portugal in 1959 and built an international music career over three decades. Singing in Portuguese, Angolan languages, French and more, they also covered Latin American and North American songs and connected with the Civil Rights movement during their 1969 U.S. tour. This experience shaped their 1972 landmark album, Blackground, which was a powerful cultural statement influenced by Black Power, jazz and African independence movements. In 1981, Blackground was reworked with new arrangements including the instrumental 'Danca do Robalinho' which came in two parts. This jazz-funk masterpiece now gets reissued for the first time and is a must-buy.

Review: Matthew Halsall's Gondwana label is seeing a busy August what with the imprint flooding our jazz charts with reissues and, of course, new releases such as this wonderful collaborative effort from The Gondwana Orchestra and Dwight Trible. Trible's voice is like silk, running up and down the delicate waves of melodies from the collective, with "Colors" and "The Creator Has A Master Plan" both capable of making the toughest of audiences feel utterly uplifted. On the flip, "Love Is Everywhere" shines bright amid a flurry of flutes and intricate drum percussions, while "You've Got To Have Freedom" rides off a much smoother, deeper sort of vibe that's got a little funk at its core. Review: Gateway by John Abercrombie is a captivating journey through the realms of modern jazz fusion, featuring Abercrombie's masterful guitar work alongside Dave Holland's silky-smooth bass and Jack DeJohnette's dynamic drumming. Seamlessly blends traditional and progressive jazz elements, Abercrombie's compositions showcase intricate band interplay, with tracks like 'May Dance' and 'Jamala' highlighting the trio's ability to shape melodies around each other's instrumentation. Holland's bass provides a solid foundation, grounding Abercrombie's exploratory guitar solos, while DeJohnette's drumming adds texture and depth to the ensemble. Abercrombie's experimental approach to guitar sounds, as seen in 'Sorcery 1,' adds a unique dimension to the album, enhancing its dissonant yet accessible nature. Overall, Gateway offers a rewarding listening experience for jazz and music lovers.

Originally from 1973, Rhythmiques functions as one of the label's most iconic releases. Written entirely in collaboration between French composer and percussionist Pierre Dahan and synthesist Mat Camison, it features tense funk, blunted jazz and heavy breaks all the way. Once more, legendary composer and drummer Pierre Alain Dahan hears his timely work reissued - this time in collaboration with his eternal guitar colleague Slim Pezin, a many-timed collaborator with Dahan. Contrasting to Dahan's many more experimental works, such as the prototypical 'Rhythmiques' album (which is far more out-there, almost primordial-sounding) 'Neo Rhythmiques' is an absolute killer of scorching, uptempo jazzy soul-funk, demonstrating what humanity as whole has achieved since, by harnessing said rhythmic primordium for its own funky ends.

This album reimagines selections from his trio albums Being and The Wayfarers with some rich orchestral arrangements by the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, all conducted by Miho Hazama. Blending jazz and classical music in unique ways, Dale focuses on the nuanced spaces between notes and so creates a horizontal, interval-based musical exploration. His trio, including Audun Kleive on drums and Per Zanussi on bass, achieves a delicate balance while integrating with the orchestra to deliver a seamless, expressive sound that makes for a genre-blurring musical vision.

Their new album was written in summer 2020 which was denied the pandemic, the black lives matter movement and general social unrest in the US. That permeates the often intense moods, with spoken word snippets, angst ridden sax lines and explosive rhythms. Coyote You're My Star is their second release together. The album starts off with the title track, 'Coyote, You're My Star', which starts as a charming ode to love before evolving into a passionate anthem. This theme of celebration continues with 'You Can Do Anything', a motivating piece that exudes creativity and resolve. The track 'Ivan's Theme' offers a cinematic shift, reminiscent of classic soundtrack motifs. Mid-album, Dana & Alden deliver standout tracks like 'Garden Famil,' featuring Melanie Charles, which pays tribute to nature's healing role, and 'Bourdain,' a poignant homage to Anthony Bourdain. 'Maria' stands out with a great groove, while 'PB' acts as a transitional interlude. The final tracks, including 'Chocobanano' and 'Popular Front', present dynamic and thought-provoking fare. Closing with 'Return of the Coyote', the album revisits its central themes, expanding the emotional and sonic landscape. Coyote, You're My Star is a unique trip that masterfully intertwines the old and the new.

Review: Recorded live at Basin Street in New York during 1954 and '55, this album highlights the tight interplay and smooth melodies that were hallmarks of Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond's early work. Featuring Bob Bates and Joe Dodge, the quartet excels in delivering fluid counterpoints and silky solos, as showcased in 'Love Walked In.' The "red hot" in the title of Jazz: Red Hot and Cool alludes to its vibrant cover featuring a model in striking red attire. The "cool" pertains to the music itself. This reissue presents two previously unreleased tracks, 'Taking a Chance on Love' and 'Closing Time Blues,' both offering lively, energetic performances. Brubeck's solos soar on the former, while the latter delivers a delightful bounce with its piano, wire brushes, and walking bass lines. The album's excellent sound quality captures the intimate, live atmosphere of the performances, making it essential for jazz lovers. Standout tracks include 'The Duke,' a straightforward blues number, and 'Indiana,' where Desmond's solo traverses complex rhythmic patterns with ease. Documenting the quartet's progress before significant lineup changes in 1956 and 1958, this vinyl reissue revives a golden era of jazz, celebrating the innovative live performances that defined the Brubeck quartet.

Review: With Introducing Emilia Sisco, Sisco steps into the spotlight backed by Cold Diamond & Mink, spanning ten tracks that hit that rare sweet spot between classic soul vibes and a refined, modern polish. Each song feels meticulously crafted, from the smoky, gospel-inflected swing of 'Say Yes' that opens the album, to the heartfelt sway of 'Don't Let Nobody,' where Sisco's vocals radiate warmth and vulnerability. Cold Diamond & Mink's arrangements anchor Sisco's expressive range, laying down rich, textured backdrops that ebb and flow with her every note. As the album progresses, Sisco's voice weaves through uplifting choruses and more introspective moments with an authenticity that's all her own, cementing her as a powerful new voice in the soul scene and offering listeners a journey that's timeless yet undeniably fresh.

Review: Inspired by the shifting seascapes of Josephine Davies' Shetland roots, Weatherwards by her Satori project reflects the islands' enduring influence. Over seven years and four albums, Satori remains Josephine's musical home and is where her saxophone artistry thrives. The compositions are rooted in Shetland's landscapes and her personal history, and they introduce pianist Alcyona Mick alongside bassist Dave Whitford and drummer James Maddren. Weatherwards highlights Satori's hallmark: a dynamic balance of free-flowing creativity and unity in a sumptuous jazz framework.

Review: Miles Davis' quintet was formed in 1955 and soon after began impressing the jazz world with the sort of invention that eventually saw them hailed as one of the greatest in history. Each member - including Miles on trumpet, John Coltrane on tenor sax, Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Art Taylor on drums - was a creative force in their own right. Cookin' proved that and came on Prestige as the first in a series of four albums, later followed by Steamin', Workin' and Relaxin'. These albums were recorded during two highly productive sessions in May and October of 1956 and the quintet's groundbreaking work explored a dynamic blend of improvisation, technical skill and innovative jazz exploration.

Review: As you can guess from the title, this is a follow up to Kind of Blue, one of the most famous jazz albums of all time. The iconic 1959 recordings radiate their own vibe while showcasing Davis's transformative approach to jazz. The opener impresses with elegant trumpet lines and a meticulous rhythm section that is a fine showcase of restraint that grows from delicate nuances to fluid improvisation. As the album unfolds, Davis's intuitive synergy with his bandmates shines and intricate complexities turn into accessible melodies. The hauntingly beautiful 'Blue in Green' stands out for its depth and overall the record captures a pivotal moment in Davis's evolution.

Review: Miles Davis' The Bootleg Series, Volume 1: Live in Europe 1967 is a monumental release, capturing the essence of one of jazz's most legendary ensembles. This 5xLP box set from Columbia/Legacy, featuring 180-gram audiophile vinyl, showcases previously unreleased live performances by Davis' second great quintetiWayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams. The set documents five concerts from October and November 1967, a transitional period in Davis' career. While this quintet never achieved the pop-cultural impact of Davis' earlier or later groups, their work during this era remains highly influential. The recordings reveal a band pushing the boundaries of bebop with exhilarating spontaneity and creativity. Tony Williams' dynamic drumming is particularly noteworthy, adding intense energy to tracks like 'Footprints,' while Hancock's innovative piano work and Shorter's probing saxophone contribute to the band's distinctive sound. Live in Europe 1967 represents a crucial moment before the group's shift to electric jazz, epitomising the quintet's mastery of live improvisation and interaction.

Review: What is there left to be said about this album? It is (probably) one of the most pressed and reissue of all-time and for good reason - it set a new standard for jazz and appeared to both hardcore lovers of the genre as well as those with only a passing interest. No matter your view of jazz, it is hard not to be moved by the feathery drums and wandering bass of opener 'So What', or the expressive horns of 'Freddie Freeloader' over nimble piano fingers that dance so delicately about the keys. 'All Blues' is a study in melancholy and 'Flamenco Sketches' brings a hint of South American sunshine into this most moving and intimate of jazz records.

Review: Captured live in 1974, this performance at Carnegie Hall showcases Miles Davis at the height of his electric fusion era, blending jazz with rock in a fierce, exploratory manner. The show features the monumental 'Moja' and 'Wili,' each spread across two parts, with the band improvising freely and building intricate, pulsating rhythms. Davis's trumpet and organ create a swirling, unpredictable sound, while the guitar work from Pete Cosey and Reggie Lucas adds texture and energy. Tracks like 'Tatu' and 'Nne' display Davis's shift towards African-inspired sounds, experimenting with complex rhythms and haunting melodies. This is a tour de force, an unfiltered snapshot of Davis's creative genius.

Review: Miles Davis's Seven Steps to Heaven album came in 1963 and was recorded in two different studios at a vital time in his career. It was the first new work in a year (back then he had released thick and fast since debuting in 1950) and can be rightly thought to be the first time his second great quintet really came together and showed their mettle. The album got two Grammy nominations and is also noted for being the last time Davis mixed up standards with original works. It's one of his most expressive and well-played oeuvres. This special edition reissue has been remastered from the original analogue master tapes so sounds of the highest quality and is backed with detail, tone and definition.

Review: April 10, 1970. Miles Davis, fresh from his Jack Johnson sessions and with a new face in the band, soprano saxophonist Steve Grossman, take the stage at San Francisco's Fillmore West and set about sparking a revolution in jazz by fusing it with rock and funk elements. Captured on Black Beauty: Miles Davis at Fillmore West, this performance is one for the agesifull of explosive improvisation, raw energy and a palpable sense of transformation. The album, finally reissued on vinyl after years of being locked away in Japan, is a time capsule of a moment in jazz history where tradition was discarded and a new frontier was being built. With his usual crewiGrossman, Chick Corea on keys, Dave Holland on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Airto Moreira on percussioniDavis steered the ship into turbulent, unpredictable waters. It's all about the groove, the shifts in rhythm, and the untamed trumpet blasts that echo through the room like firecrackers. Tracks like 'Miles Runs the Voodoo Down' - from the milestone Bitches Brew album, which had come out a mere month before - and 'It's About That Time' tear apart the old jazz playbook, plunging deep into rock territory while still holding on to the open-ended freedom of improvisation. This is the raw, unfiltered jazz that would come to define the electric period of Davis' caree - a live-wire snapshot of a jazz legend finding new possibilities in real-time.

Review: Predating Herbie Hancock's landmark electro experiment 'Rockit' by two years, this 1981 album from the legendary Miles Davis may reference his his 1952 10" LP Young Man With A Horn in its title, but there's nothing traditional or retro about its sound. Having been tempted out of a six year hiatus by his nephew Vince Wilburn, Miles incoporated brand new synth and programming technology into his sound and elements of funk, soul and fusion jazz into the finished article, which features both tracks with Wilburn's band and others featuring saxophone player Bill Evans, bassist Marcus Miller and drummer Al Foster. It's not your average Miles album by a long chalk, but quite a fascinating insight into how the legend refeused to rest on his creative laurels all the same.

This early gem - in fact, it was the maestro's first ever 12" record - shows a masterful command of space and melody, spotlighting a warm, muted trumpet tone alongside a pared-down ensemble. Without a saxophone, the spotlight remains squarely on the lead, providing ample room for expansive solos and lyrical interpretations. Anchored by a stellar rhythm section featuring a buoyant bassist, impeccable pianist and dynamic drummer, the performances exude a relaxed yet precise energy. Highlights include a fresh, distinctive take on the Dizzy Gillespie classic 'A Night in Tunisia', where the group reimagines the piece with effortless ingenuity. Original compositions add further depth, with a witty riposte to a well-known standard and a contemplative piece that lingers in the listener's mind. A transitional moment for one of the all time greats, hinting at the greatness to come all the way back in 1955.

My Funny Valentine captured delicate ballads and was met with immediate critical successes. It is an album that demonstrated profound emotion with minimal fuss and represents a high point in Miles Davis' early 1960s career, capturing the excitement and sound of a road-honed group at its peak. Herbie Hancock's piano intros, George Coleman's melodic tenor, Ron Carter's steady bass, and Tony Williams' unexpected drumming contributed to an unforgettable collective sound.

Review: Miles Davis and Marcus Miller's third and final fusion session, Amandla brought the partnership's triptych to a delightful close in 1989 with some of the most upbeat and funkiest compositions and jam sessions of the set. With Miles's trumpeteering and Marcus's iconic slap-bass going toe-to-toe on each track, the pair mischievously play chicken with each other as both hop and skip between the spotlight. The same can also be said for the devilish arrangement as we flicker from game show funk ("Jilli") to epitaph soliloquies ("Mr Pastorius") all within a tangible 80s production context. This has aged remarkably well.

The live recording features Davis' "Second Great Quintet," including Herbie Hancock (piano), Ron Carter (bass), Tony Williams (drums) and Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone). This quintet pushed the boundaries of jazz with its innovative approach to improvisation and rhythm and the concert showcases Davis' evolving sound as he transitioned from his earlier modal work into more abstract, avant-garde territory. The setlist features dynamic interpretations of jazz standards and Davis' originals, both highlighting the ensemble's remarkable chemistry and individual brilliance.

Featuring classics like 'Milestones', 'Straight, No Chaser' and 'Two Bass Hit', it was notable as one of Davis' earliest experimentations in public with modal scale patterns that was available commercially. It's not Bitches Brew or Kind of Blue, but it is a delightfully easy to listen work, with references taken from Brazilian folk on 'Prenda Minha' which actually gets renamed 'Song #2' here, or Spanish classical on 'Adelita' which was written by the pioneering Francisco Tarrega and is here called 'Song #1' .There are also some woozy ballads and standout big band jam 'Summer Night.' That Quintet, often said to be the greatest in all of jazz history thanks to including Miles on trumpet next to John Coltrane on tenor, Red Garland on keys, bass from Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones on drums, put out several long players with very similar titles including this one, Miles: The New Miles Davis Quintet, in 1956. It is one of the earlier works from the then newly formed band and the songs in it are a mix of pop and jazz standards.
