A7 Edits Volume 6
Cat: A7E 006. Rel: 06 Jun 23
Ekambi Brillant - "Afrika Afrika" (John Talabot & Pional Lost Script Rerub) (6:29)
Gyedu Blay Ambolley - "Highlife" (Alan Dixon edit) (5:59)
Michael Amara - "New Bell" (Jacques Renault edit) (5:53)
Pasteur Lappe - "Na Real Sekele Fo' Ya" (Escapade edit) (5:59)
Review: Africa Seven's A7 Edits offshoot has already proved to be one of the better re-edit series around, primarily because they consistently employ some of the best re-editors in the business, offering them the opportunity to select tracks they want to rework from the parent label's vast catalogue of licensed cuts. This edition - the seventh EP to date - is another action-packed winner. Rising star Alan Dixon delivers a lightly tooled-up, all-action revision of Gyedu Bley Amadou's tropical disco classic 'Highlife', before Barcelona-based John Talabot and Pional re-frame Ekambi Brilliant's 'Afrika Afrika' as a kind of Afro-post-punk/dub disco mash-up. Over on side B, Escapade dances through a bouncy disco-house take on Pasteur Lappe's 'Na Real Sekele Fo Ya', while Jacques Renault expertly rearranges Michael Amara's Afro-disco-funk staple 'New Bell'.

He studied flute and latin arrangements in Cuba during the 60's & became orchestra leader for the national ivorian tv in Abidjan in the mid seventies, toured all over the world with the famous Africando band.
In the 80's he also recorded few rare Funky tracks with heavy breaks and this 4 track collection features rare tracks from 1978 to 1982 dedicated to dancefloor .Remastered by Frank at The Carvery this is solid ammunition for your dancefloor.

Tuto Bay (3:32)
Review: After two 45s on Les Disques Bongo Joe, Dutch Afrofunk space cadets make their debut on Soundway with their first full EP. Hurling all their roots and inspirations into a heady, bewitching brew of west African, Columbian, Caribbean, Latin and all-round cosmic fusion, the results are four slabs of world funk gold. "Down In The Basement" updates highlife styles with a salubrious big-bottomed disco twist, "The Opposite" ups the tempo with a little more cumbia charm while "Continue The Fun" adds a dub mentality to the mix as we're chugged to oblivion with heads down introspection. Finally "Tuto Bay" closes somewhere on a Cuban beach with rum-warmed harmonies. Beautiful.

She's A Rose (instrumental) (3:54)
Lotsapapa (instrumental) (3:39)
Review: F Spot kick off their year with a fresh new release from fresh new funk pushers, Mestizo Beat, emanative of the MagaNa Brothers's hillside studio in Topanga, CA.. Coming at the sound with a distinctive Afro-Cuban bent, this 7" flaunts the natural ends of their particular sound: 'She's A Rose' packs a beautiful brass section and charms the listener with it's extended pre-chorus section. 'Lotsapoppa', meanwhile, minimizes the sound with a simple kick, bass, and djembe groove to start with, before launching into a dynamic Afro-disco infection, the collaborative patients zero, one and two being Steve Haney of Jungle Fire on drums, Jason Cressey of the True Loves on trombone, and Jesse Audelo on arrangement.

Review: Moar is an alias from French DJ and producer Jerome Potin, who has been gifting us groove-laden edit gear and his own original productions for decades now. His commitment to funk can never be in doubt, and so it goes on this drop for his 45 Loves label. It's a more recent venture which has carried a vast array of edits from the man's archives, championing less obvious grooves from hidden corners of Afrobeat, high life and elsewhere. The A-side offering on here is a slickly looped up strutter with a little filter house flair, while the B-side is a smoky, submerged affair for those subtler moments in a party.

Review: Tamrat Kebede's Mombasa Roots is a project with a timeless edge and an inimitable Afro-roots vibe that is simply irreplaceable and downright irrefutable by any sort of music lover. Whether you are or are not into this delightful blend of tropical disco, tunes like "Karibishe" and "Mezea Tu" are almost impossible not to dance to, or at least appreciate. "Kasha Langu" is more appropriate to the true lovers of Afrobeat, thanks to its slow, seductive sway, while "What Is It That You Want" unleashes some fiery disco-boogie, and "My Everything" showers the room with yet more disco glitter, the sexiest of sorts.

Tabu Ley Rochereau - "Hafi Deo" (Nick The Record & Dan Tyler re-edit dub) (10:15)
Review: Edits in the hole! Two Afrofunk gems enjoy floor-primed refocuses: Steve Monite's Doing It In Lagos-featured "Only You" gets a little juice from Sofrito's Frankie Francis who really brings the bass out in proceedings. Meanwhile on the B Nick The Record and Idjut Boy Dan Tyler tweak the energy and sheen of Tabu Ley Rochereau's "Hafi Disco" as the drums are given a little more momentum and the chorus and horns are really brought to the centre of the action. Stunning.

The Parisian DJ and producer brings a distinct Afro-boogie update to an original song, 'A.I.E. A Mwana', which was originally recorded in 2003 and became an international sleeper hit. Eu Quero Tudo (4:03)
Review: 2022 has been a hugely successful year for Razor N Tape founder JKriv, whose various singles, remixes and re-edits have all hit the mark. His final release of 2022 sees him serve up four more hot-to-trot edits for the long-running Moton label. On opener 'Repent', the Escort bass player serves up a fine rearrangement of a spacey synth-sporting disco-funk obscurity, while 'Lingala Nacionale' is a fast paced, turn-of-the-80s Afro-disco number with strong vocals, beats and jangly guitars. Over on side B, JKriv first gives his interpretation of a squelchy Caribbean boogie gem from Tappa Zukie ('Love Dream'), before dipping the tempo a touch on a suitably summery rework of a sun-baked Brazilian disco-boogie gem.

Soweto Disco (Voodoocuts edit) (4:48)
Shanana (Voodoocuts edit) (4:57)
Review: Voodoocuts returns to Matasuna Records with another officially licensed 45, this time putting his expert touch on two disco gems by South African legends The Movers. Active from the late 1960s through the early 80s, The Movers were instrumental in shaping the country's vibrant music scene. Voodoocuts tackles 'Soweto Disco' and 'Shanana,' two tracks from their late-70s catalogue, and gives them his trademark treatment with pinpoint precision. The result is a fusion of South African rhythms with international influences like jazz, funk, and disco, transforming the originals into dynamite for any dancefloor. These reworks elevate the raw energy of the originals while remaining true to the spirit of the band. 'Soweto Disco' pulses with infectious grooves, while 'Shanana' offers a more laid-back vibe, but both are packed with the flair and soul that The Movers were known for. A perfect blend of local and global, these edits are a must-have for any record bag, seamlessly mixing South African funk with universal disco sensibilities.

A-grade diggers Kalita have a few top class releases on their hands this month and this is one of them: a first ever official vinyl reissue of Mpharanyana & The Peddler tunes 'Disco' and 'Freak Out With Botsotso.' This is worldly South African disco and funk from 1979 that comes with a super remix from Rotterdam-based DJ, producer and funk specialist Jamie 3:26. is version of 'Disco' is primed for modern dance floor with murky drums and the big vocal chants sure to get huge reactions. Review: Having previously excelled at crafting party-starting bootleg funk remixes and composing revivalist soul slammers, Mr Bird has now decided to turn his attention to Afro-disco, Afro-funk and Afro-soul. Typically, the results are impressive, particularly "Dance Away", a hybrid Afro-disco/Afro-soul workout featuring the fine vocals of Chief Commander Yaaba. Elsewhere, he lays down a subtly housed-up take on Clavinet-happy Afro-funk (the superb, jazz-funk tinged "Floating Funk"), brilliantly breaks up the beats on the woozy, groovy and bustling "Carnival Beat", and lays blissful vocal harmonies over a sumptuous deep house beat on "The Sasquatch".

Review: Kalita have a great one here with a first ever official reissue of Muchos Plus's, a much sought after 12" from 1979. It's pure reggae disco heat that forty years after release is still a banger. It was first put out on bandleader Rudy Mills' own label U-Solo Records, and is actually a pair of versions of their devastating disco take on The Beginning of the End's smash hit 'Funky Nassau', plus their own reggae funk slow jam 'Love Misunderstood'. An original is well over 500 quid on Discogs and it's easy to see why. The tunes brim with energy, funky licks and whistles, coats and much more to bring that worldly feel good vibe.

It features the Afro disco sounds of Fred Fisher Atalobhor And His Ogiza Dance Band firstly on 'WTFS' which was originally released back in 1981. It's a booty-wiggling cut with myriad funky lines, squelchy synth motifs, lush chords and soul drenched vocals that bring the sunshine and party in equally playful measure. On the flip is 'Ebi Lolo' which is defined by its big brass section and loosey-goose guitar lines, bright chords and subtle funk. Two great gems once more from this on point label.

It's packed with revived Afro disco sounds from Fred Fisher Atalobhor and His Ogiza Dance Band. Bamenda (5:45)
Mangala (6:03)
Tropicalissimo (6:01)
Ibaye (5:22)
Review: Following much loved releases on Riot, Tropical Disco and Italy's Full Time Production, Musta delivers us four new irresistible workouts that blend disco sensibilities and a sharp dancefloor aesthetic with an original dose of African rhythms. 'Bamenda' starts proceedings with a laid back, wonderfully wonky vibe, before 'Mangala' ups the ante subtly, being more lively but also lighter and nimbler. 'Tropicalissimo' is the one for the percussion heads, its tumbling timbales paving the way for a bleepy acid house head nodder blessed with Cuban-style vocals and carnival sonics. 'Ibaye' completes the package, surfing a hefty groove but seasoning its beats with the most exotic trimmings. All four are standouts in their own way and the kind of weapons a DJ will be simply itching to drop. A Musta-have release, you might even say.

Review: Since the Beach Diggin' compilation series launched a few years back, a number of its obscure, Balearic-minded selections have been given full length reissues of their own. We can probably expect a number of the tracks from this brilliant fifth volume to get the same treatment. As usual, the wide-ranging track list is thick with highlights, from the synth-heavy, French language reggae of Raphael Toine's 1986 bubbler "Femmes Pays Douces" (taken from the artist's frustratingly hard to find Ce Ta Ou album) and vibraphone-laden jazz-funk smoothness of Yasuko Agwa's sought-after "L.A Night", to the barely-known brilliance of Andre Maria Tole's Cameroonian gem "Sweet Dole". In other words, it's another essential selection.

The opener "Sweet Julu" is now a London two-step classic, while other tracks like "Nomalizo" or "The Village" are more on the disco side, all of them filtered with a distinctly tropical edge! Review: Since it was first reissued a few years ago, Steve Monite's Only You album has gone from being a stupidly rare Nigerian boogie "holy grail", to an easy-to-access "must have" for anyone with even a passing interest in African disco and electrofunk. If you've yet to acquire a copy, we'd recommend picking up a copy of this officially licensed Soundway repress. It contains two different takes on the now anthemic 'Only You' - an infectious Lagos boogie delight - plus the pleasingly dubbed-out, piano-heavy electrofunk gem 'Things Fall Apart (Disco Jam)' (the original mix is also included at the end of side B), the slick and sweet 'Welcome My Love' and the more downtempo 'I Had a Dream'.

Review: Isle Of Jura's latest must-have reissue isn't a slept-on Balearic gem, but rather a turn-of-the-'80s disco-boogie classic from sadly departed Nigerian musician Harry Mosco. Many may know the breezy Afro/disco/funk fusion of opener "Sexy Dancer" and the hazy disco-funk genius of "Step On" (both have been reissued in the past), yet it's the lesser-known cuts - particularly the lolloping, Clavinet-heavy dub disco of "Peace & Harmony", spaced-out "Peaceful Dub" and sumptuous jazz-funk slow jam "Do It Together" - that really set the pulse racing. The reissue sounds superb, too, thanks to a killer re-mastering job, so it's no stretch to suggest that it's worth picking this version up rather than tracking down an original pressing.

Review: For their first full-length reissue, Canopy Records brings new life to Oppressor, a rare 1987 album by Nigerian artist Myke Moul. Long a cult favourite due to its genre-blending style and hard-to-find status, this remastered edition corrects past audio issues and gives the album the sound quality it always deserved. From the opening notes of the title track, Oppressor sets a tone that's both breezy and politically aware, a mid-tempo groove riding on synth-reggae rhythms with a soulful message woven in. The album, shaped in part by reggae icon Majek Fashek and later reimagined in France with a roster of versatile session players, stands out for its seamless mix of styles: island-leaning reggae, glossy boogie, and moments that feel like they could have soundtracked a Mediterranean sunset. "Shadows in the Rain" dips into an 80s synth-funk groove, while "Heading for the Top" is a shimmering, bass-forward boogie cut, setting the tone for a collection that flits back and forth between reggae, funk and boogie.
