Such Is The Ordeal
Review: The first two instalments of the brand new AM/PM 12" series guarantees a level of quality to all those converts to The End. With a soon-to-be-legendary performance coming up inside the crumbling glory of the east end - the fantastic Wilton's Music Hall - alongside fellow dust botherer Janek Schaeffer, Radovan Scasascia's increasing prominence on the live circuit promises further thrills galore. Radovan continues here in the same realm as with the acclaimed 'Also' EP. The source material here still comes from a carefully selected palette of final moments and last breaths of found recordings. The arrangements let them move in and out of time, creating mesmeric chance compositions, micro-tonal disharmonies and that typical AM/PM warmth. A total of four 12" releases are scheduled building up to a CD album due for 2007. Extremely high quality as always.

Review: Rene Amesz and Peter Gelderbom need little introduction, following some of their monster releases over the last number of years. "Snap" is no exception, garnering support from Laurent Garnier, Carl Cox, Steve Lawler, Shlomi Aber, Funk D'Void, Eric Prydz, Sebastien Leger, Mason, Paul Harris, Roger Sanchez, Richard Dinsdale, King Unique and many many more. Filthy beats, phat basslines and that infectious hook, this is pure adulterated dirty house music from the Rising Trax imprint.

Ed Hodge - "Atreides" (6:42)
Phazma - "Arrakeen" (5:55)
Review: On Rotation rolls out its third seductive minimal and tech house EP here from a fine selection of artists. Anderson kicks off with 'Polymorphic Magic,' a psychedelic cut with slithering bass and bumping drums racing along into the night. Jamie Leather then steps up with 'Discovery' which is more bright and spaced out thanks to the slinky synths. The drums have a 90s feel as they race through the cosmos and lead on to Ed Hodge's more manic 'Atreides' which powers along at hyper speed with neon hued chords. Phazma's 'Arrakeen' then rounds out on a wave of ravey breakbeat goodness.

Pir - "Glass" (5:10)
Review: Off Topic builds on its early momentum with a third outing if deep tech class from Antonio and Pir. Antonio get first with a cute vibe on 'We Sang We Laugh' which repeats the title's refrain over elastic and nimble drums. 'Danca Danca' its more heady with reverb-rich kicks and echoing vocals that bring a curious edge and then it is Per who takes care of the flipside. 'Mighty Blue' layers a smoky jazz line over weighty house kicks and 'Glass' shuts down with more sample madness.

Alich & Simo - "Ahlia" (7:41)
Lulla - "99 Year Old Port" (7:40)
Petit Batou - "Tadam Tadam" (7:51)
Review: We've become relentless pushers of (albeit, only the best) minimal and tech house as of late, and of this batch, French label Stamp Records almost certainly head up the microgenre, microhouse. Welcoming four funky affiliates with a flair for fleeting feels, every track here is a beautiful vignette. In the future, when we have flying cars, Alich & Simo's 'Ahlia' might function as a fittingly dreamy and esoteric soundtrack for late cosmic nightrides. Meanwhile, Lulla's '99 Year Old Port' works better for scouring underwater sewage systems and future undersea tunnels. Sample-heavy, light and flighty.

Review: Legend of the Parisian underground Ark teams up with the Minibar affiliated Pit Spector; he of Prospector, who has teamed up with for some great releases with the likes of Ben Vedren and San Proper recently. This new one for Hold Youth sees them throw down some quirky, loungey and microsampled grooves that roll deep such as on opener "Chauffage Central". Label boss Le Loup's remix next takes things even deeper (and definitely darker) on this after-hours suited effort. The flip sees a bunch of shorter tracks but they're straight to the point, like the funky disco loop of "Petite Ondee", the sexy deep house groove of "Air Conditionelle" and the tough, jackin' and down right boompty "Sub Tropicale".

BKorizon
Review: Well respected brothers-about-town Ark and Pit make a long-overdue return to collabo city and the result is a five-strong collection of beautiful leftfield house grooves. "Clark Kent" is the big league pick; an ESG-style post-disco bassline stutters and slurs in the mix with so much funk you feel you need to clean your decks after playing it. Another peak is the pummelling techno groove and soft jazzy chord combo of "They Ruff". Insistent yet warm, it's not far off a Carl Craig production. Need a lie down? Do so to the wonky, sludgy downtempo dreaminess of "BKorizon".

Review: Spectral's first instalment of the "Death Is Nothing To Fear" series mixes the established with the new and embraces the international status the label's roster has earned after seven years of diverse, consistent output. The a-side is dedicated to Audion. The 12-minute "I Gave You Away" is a blistering mix of sprightly bass kicks and bubbly keypad melodies. On the flip, newcomer Pär Grindvik steps up the pace with the addictive, playful "Casio", while Bodycode weighs in with "Exciting Ride", a cut characterized by the spooky keyboard lines and disembodied vocal samples. "Death Is Nothing To Fear" proves that techno is still the most innovative and exciting dance music in the world.

The pair deliver crisp textures that meet the driving momentum of their electro-influenced sound design, evoking a sense of cerebral euphoria. 'Crush' expertly balances the squelchy, ice-cold synths of electro with the deep propulsion of acid house, while also drawing upon the hypnotic atmosphere of techno. Gino Bomino - "For Sharon"
Review: New imprint Studio Barnhus makes its bow with this rather stush 12" entitled Good Children Make Bad Grown Ups. The label was formed by Axel Boman, Petter Nordkvist and Kornel Kovacs, and it's Axel who offers the first track here, "Modern Fluids", a fine follow up to his recent EP for DJ Koze's Pampa imprint. This shares with A Side with Pedrodollar's insouciant "Ner I Brunnen", before Kovacs' "Baby Step" opens things up on the flip with on a chunky deep house tip. But it's the jazzy keys and Detroit atmospherics on B-Side cut "For Sharon" by the wonderfully named Gino Bomino that wins the Juno award for EP highlight, which comes replete with vocal loops and junkyard percussion that would make KDJ proud.

Review: Berlin's Bar 25 was a real haven in the German party capital. It's reputation lives on strong in the label releases, the latest of which is a celebratory various artist affair. Kiki kicks things off with a heads down tech house stomper that undulates just enough to keep you in the groove.
Danny Faber's 'Hampi' is a headier affair, with suspensory synths keeping you locked on edge and then Phonique and Fairplay link for the more tribal and mysterious sounds of 'Zatar'. Closing out this party-ready EP is Martin Waslewski with the far-gazing chords and twinkling retro future keys of 'Dimensionen.'

Cabanne - "Zoso"
Binh - "HUfer"
Priku - "Mare Mirare"
Review: As label statements go, the Textures series from Concrete has been superbly successful in transferring the ethos of their increasingly legendary Sunday boat parties to a label format; the diverse approach to DJ bookings matched by a wonderfully far reaching spread of artists across the three Textures 12"s. Previous instalments have seen contributions from Abdulla Rashim, Jared Wilson, Bleak, Sampling As An Art and Awanto 3 and this final record of the showcase series demonstrates Concrete's willingness to embrace the techier fare. Telegraph's Jean-Guillaume Cabanne hogs the A Side and represents Concrete's desire to embrace local talent, whilst Club der Visionare resident Binh offers a stripped down but smudgy highlight in the form of "Hufer". Priku ends the series in requisite style with "Mare Mirare" and his presence demonstrates Concrete is aware of Romania's current status within minimal circles. It remains intriguing to see what Concrete have planned next after such an impressive start.

Review: New Berlin imprint Panea is a concept based on sharing the passion for music and "to provide talented musicians, DJs and producers with valuable opportunities." More power to them we say! They're definitely off to a good start when you consider they've recruited a couple of the Slow Life alumni, namely Pepe Villalba; who provides the dusty and broken groove of "Earthbreak" and of course Saverio Celestri with the hypnotic lo-tech soul of "November Sun". Elsewhere, there's other fine grooves by Gustavo Cardenas & Dirty Lemon with the rolling hypno-groove of "On The Basis" and Primary Perception with another lovely excursion in broken beat deep house on "Voicing".

Review: Cesare & Disorder returns to the studio with Argentinean partner Perro Magnetico with this deep and hypnotic four tracker that will help further cement the Mean London sound. A deep and brooding first track introduces twisted, down tuned vocals with Sleeparchive styled synthesis delivered in liquefied layers before a throbbing bass takes the driving seat. A2 holds a playful and quirky electronic excursion "Clarete" warming us up with romantic, light melodies. On the B side, Ale Ross (aka Perro Magnetico) drives you deeply into the sunset with two minimal gems that build but never explode. A demonstration of where minimal techno could go from these two young artists.

Review: UK's Christian B (Christian Ballard) & Lavvy Levan (nice one!) created Friday Fox Recordings in 2013 to provide an outlet for their house music ventures.Their funky and feelgood nu-disco jam "Through The Night" nails the same vibe as Mark E's classic "R&B Drunkie" from several years back. Russia's Promonova follows up a great release on King Street last year with his surefire funk edit "Feel Alright This Morning". On the flip there's more highlights, with Riki Inocente's late night funky house remix of B and Levan's second contribution "No Trouble" and finally Rapson's ode to the NYC deep sound "Heat" (Exclusive extended mix). Think Mr V or Quentin Harris and featuring the vocal talents of Nathan Thomas over a soulful arrangement and it's very good!

Review: While Pheek may have been in operation for as long as anyone can remember within minimal house and techno, Cleymoore has been most productive more recently thanks to his Pluie/Noir label. Following on from last year's Seikou single on Xquisite, here Cleymoore and Pheek link up to deliver some densely packed, production rich jams that keep the spirit of mid-00s clicks and cuts alive. The beats themselves may be slender slices that carry the energy of the tracks, but it's all in the infinitesimal details in between that the true magic of this music comes alive.

Review: Burnski's high-quality Constant Black is back with more essential club-ready sounds. Donnie Cosmo and Pascal Benjamin step up for one side of action each. Cosmo's 'Holo Glitch' is first and pairs balmy synth work that is colourful and silky with some punchy tech drums and rolling bass that pulls you in deep. 'Echo Drift' is another lithe and lively one to get you on your toes while the groove flows and 'Airplane Mode' is another stylish mix of lush synth design and great rhythm. Benjamin's trio on the flip is a little more gritty with industrial-space-tech many the most fitting way to describe these curious cosmic cuts.

Review: The "Night Express EP" is the first EP on Flash Recordings that doesn't feature label owners Florian Meindl and Oliver Koletzki. But they have made sure to look for a quality replacement. Cologne based artist Daso teams up with his buddy Pawas to create their first release on Flash. On the a-side Daso & Pawas foreshadow the summer with the track "TGV", a beautifully deep melody that swings along a powerful loop. "ICE", the name of Germany's high-speed train, is clearly more electro-driven. A slightly broken beat with a thumping organic bassline pumps above an ever-changing soundscape that culminates in some euphoric high-pitched synths. Never too much, this is a perfect example for elegant understatement. Also on the flip side is the track "Bummelzug", which translates as "very slow train" in German. This is a dub-techno masterpiece.

The title track features pixellated Atari bleeps sprinkled above a walking bassline, heavily sidechained chants and raggamuffin lyrics. "Goodby Tomorrow" dispenses cut up MPC techniques alongside J Dilla breakbeats. "Hello Today" does away with drums, reinventing "Goodby Tomorrow" by washing it in reverb and rusted needle dust. Space station gurgles and dubby horns haunt "Deserts & Rainbows" whereas "Any Time" blends sultry R&B swing with guitars. "Emit Yna" caresses the EP to sleep with a calming downtempo melody.

This third outing from the small but well formed label is a various artists affair that takes in everything from gritty tech to dreamier house. Review: Stepping up to Kompakt, DJ Tennis makes smart use of the melodic hook from Cinematic Orchestra's "Evolution" to create an emotionally charged house track, only strengthened by the yearning new age turn from Pillowtalk on vocals. Life & Death take a more pronounced stance on their version of "The Outcast", most notably in the full-fat bassline that emerges underneath the plaintive proceedings. As you would expect, Morgan Geist brings another level of class to his version, working some wonderfully delirious arpeggios and ravey chord flexing into the mix, and creating a much snappier beat out of the component parts of the original.

A standoff between contributing artists Mateo Dufour, Polar NL, Silat Beksi and Matpri, each track is a masterclass in the kind of black-cat slinkiness worthy of this brand of Dutch tech house, which requires subtlety to function effectively. Review: Last year, Mother Tongue Records released Madre Lingua, an album of all-star collaborations between broken beat and deep house musicians and producers helmed by Verona-based Brit Patrick Gibin. This 12" updates two of the tracks from the set, with Gibin once again to the fore. On side A, he joins forces with long-time friend and studio buddy Kaidi Tatham to remix EDB and Gary Superfly's 'Pressure'. Their tack is bouncy and synth-heavy, with spacey, out-there lead lines and intergalactic-sounding pads rising above a Maurice Fulton-as-Syclops style bassline and loose-limbed house drums. Everlasting Treasuries 4
Cat: VBLK 004. Rel: 03 Oct 14
Ferro - "City People"
Nyma & Daniel Madlung - "Hidden Secrets"
Pelle - "Solent"
Review: The fourth installment in the Vekton Black label's Everlasting Treasuries series features another selection of deep-diving minimal maneuvers from some up and coming talents. Ferro gets the run of the A side and with good reason, as the soothing waft of "City People" spreads itself out with a meditative mantra fleshed out by sweet melodic tones and cyclical rhythmic patterns. Nyma and Daniel Madlung join forces on "Hidden Secrets" and keep things as lean and tracky as a minimal techno track can be, before Pelle rounds the record off with a more slender affair using just the slightest of beats and light touches of synth where it counts.

La Pena No 19
Cat: LPA 019. Rel: 20 Sep 16
Markus Fix - "Watcha People" (8:42)
Philip Boss - "Gangster Boogie" (6:38)
Jun Akimoto & Ittetsu - "Clod Air Falls" (6:37)
Bolumar - "Auslage" (6:59)
Review: More of Frankfurt's (and elsewhere) minimal and tech house heroes return for the always reliable La Pena; already up to its 19th edition! Starting out on the A side with "Watcha People" by scene favourite Markus Fix; a nice rolling/dubby journey that's equally suited to the warm up as it is for the after-hours then the smooth deep house of Phillip Boss' "Gangster Boogie" with dreamy Rhodes keys, funky synth bass and dusty beats: it ticks all the right boxes. The B side gives us the intense tribal groove of Japanese duo Jun Akimoto & Ittetsu's "Clod Air Falls" which will appeal to fans of homeboy Sascha Dive and we must also mention the lush deep house of Spaniard Bolumar's "Auslage" making this all in all a great release.

Mis Hermanos Rumanos Part 3 EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ACME 12. Rel: 06 Nov 24
Alex Font - "El Velorio De Pedrito Navajas" (10:06)
Crihan - "Dark Times" (6:24)
Paul K - "Electro Fantomas" (6:48)
Review: It has been seven long years since Acme Music introduced the first part of this series but now Mis Hermanos Rumanos is back with a third instalment. The three-track various artists' affair kicks off with Alex Font and his lean minimal tech house groove 'El Velorio De Pedrito Navajas" complete with wavy bass, twanging strings and an exotic vibe. Crihan's 'Dark Times' is dubby and unhurried, and again heads into steamy jungle worlds with watery droplets and organic percussion. Paul K's 'Electro Fantomas' is a final tripped-out closer with snappy snares and wavy drums.

Forty Fings Dynamo - "Inversion" (6:37)
Tingz - "Raveolution" (Acid mix) (6:10)
Pedro Bertho - "TOITOI" (6:33)
COEO - "Vertigo" (4:40)
Review: It's all about the early 90s vibes on this 12" from Fauvre as four underground anthems from the era are revisited. Forty Wings Dynamo's 'Inversion' has a dubby, dreamy progressive house feel, its epic outlook and echoing percussion inevitably bringing Leftfield's first handful of 12"s to mind, before 'Raveolution' (Acid mix) brings a more jungle techno feel with sliced up breaks skittering around the four-to-the-floor kicks. Pedro Bertho's 'TOITOI' starts side two, nodding to Jaydee's 'Plastic Dreams' with its soulful keys creating magic over a simple, banging techno framework before COEO's 'Vertigo' gets to work with its proto-breakbeat beats and one utterly orgasmic breakdown. Well worth a step back in time.

Turn (8:58)
Turnapella (2:09)
Grow (9:21)
Review: Two minimal heavyweights pair up for this new 12" on Exhibition and offer up a trio of expertly crafted tracks for late-night sessions. Turn kicks off with warped vocals and organic, wooden-sounding percussive details while the lurching beat rolls below. 'Turnapella' strips away everything to leave the filtered vocal as a tool for adventurous DJs, then 'Grow' is a nice minute trip into sombre chords and downbeat minimal drums that are perfect for cosy back rooms in the wee small hours of the night.

Odic Force - "Avoidance" (5:08)
Review: The pursuit of the perfect fusion of minimal and tech house is an endless one that gives rise to fascinating new music each and every day of the week here at Juno HQ. No Tech Just Wax is a fledgling label who recently threw their own metaphorical hat into the market and this fourth Various Artist EP is another strong one. It brings a certain hardcore edge and punk spirit to stripped back club grooves with the opener from FRNK being a case in point. Elsewhere there is alien-infected sound from DJ WEB, rugged electro and head-wrecking acid. This EP's strengths is in its fantastic variation.
