Protek - "I Love To Dance With You" (The Nightlark edit) (6:16)
The Cool-Notes - "Natural Energy" (5:07)
Ilija Rudman - "Dub 4 Love" (Secret Weapon mix) (5:59)
Review: This third volume of instrumentals continues the faultless Isle of Jura label's deep dive into dub versions and beyond. Side one takes in references from UK street soul and reggae and features two late-'80s tracks by Howard Hill with machine-led rhythms, rudeboy reggae skank and soulful pads. Protek's 'I Love to Dance With You' is a proto-house gem featured in a Jura Soundsystem mix and here it gets a loving re-edit by The Nightlark. Side B includes an instrumental-driven track with spacey FX from The Cool Notes' and Ilija Rudman's 'Dub 4 Love' which is a knowing nod to acid house's golden era.

Sing A Song (2:56)
Never Could Love This Way (4:26)
Review: The Wackie label has been hard at work of late digging deep into the archives and turning out some crucial reissues. They have all been tasteful done with the 80s original stampers with blank Wackie's labels, all hand written and numbered and limited to just 300 copies. First up here is 'That's Not All' which comes in two parts across the A-side and is a spaced out and head twisting dub with some great studio effects, wispy melodies and freaky effects. 'Sing A Song' us a more traditional roots cut with low slung drums and 'Never Could Love This Way' is drenched in soul.

Review: Marking Indica Dubs' 100th release in serious style, 'When Jah Come' by Danman takes the form of a powerful tribute to the late Jah Shaka, whose influence shaped generations of dub and roots sounds and musicians. This long-anticipated dubplate was famously championed by Shaka himself and comes laden with deep, earth-shattering basslines, spiritual vocals that touch your inner psyche and militant rhythms with unmistakable reverence. It is a celebration and a memorial that honours Shaka's legacy while showcasing Danman's ever-commanding voice and Indica Dubs' unrivalled production strength.

Review: Shout out to the newly launched Onedub which opens its account here with a nice clean dancehall 12" that features Danman on 'Fussing N Fighting.' It has bright digital synth sounds and natty leads over airy, rubbery drums. The legendary Indica Dubs then step up for a hefty dub that becomes much more dark and menacing thanks to the sheer scale of the cavernous bass. Two further dubs take up the flip side for some melon twisting, sound system testing brilliance. This is a fine start to what is sure to become a label well worth following.

Review: Leading modern dub label Indica Dubs ease into 2020 with more of their silky smooth and swaggering cuts. This latest 10" kicks off with Danman's "Jah Love Is True" with its lazy drums and ricocheting hits, then in house team Indica Dubs & Conscious Sounds link up for a dub before then offering "Spirit Of HIM", with big warrior leads and pillow drums and bass ready to sink right into. Indica Dubs & Conscious Sounds - "Humble Dub" (3:25)
Review: 2020 marks a decade since Sukh Gill started the Indica Dubs project, which now incorporates an online record shop, soundsystem and record label. Naturally Gill features prominently on the label's latest release, which begins with a soulful chunk of digital reggae goodness from Danny Red, "You No Better". Gill joins forces with Conscious Sounds to deliver the "Better Dub" rework, where echoing guitar motifs and delay-laden vocal snippets ride a denser and weightier revision of Red's groove. The partnership continues on side B, where the "Humble Thyself" version - an instrumental take on the EP's lead cut - is followed by the heavier, wilder and more sub-heavy "Humble Dub".

Review: If you're looking for an EP packed to the rafters with a mixture of attractive digi-reggae vocal numbers and soundsystem-bothering dubs, we'd highly recommend this 12" from leading Dutch crew King Shiloh. What's on offer is a sextet of 'versions' based around the same steppers-tinged digi-dub riddim from Dub Creator (instrumental versions of which are tagged on to the end of each side of the record). The riddim itself is a good one, with a stabbing bassline, picturesque piano stabs, flanged guitars and some unusual instrumental choices. The songs built on this solid foundation are all superb, with our picks of the bunch being Empress Black Omolo's soulful and positive, 'Love is the Weapon' and the cheeriness of Discyple's surprisingly accordion-heavy 'All Things Possible'.

If It's Not The Dub
Review: Zam Zam Sounds keep up the pressure with their fifth transmission so far this year (and 20th overall) and welcome Berlin-based soldiers Dub War and Infra into the fold with If It's Not The Police. Formerly a duo consisting of Benny Ill and Bill Robin, this 7" is the first release with the latter working solo under the guise and also his first collaboration with Marius Braun aka Infra. As with previous Zam Zam drops, the roots of dub culture are retained with If It's Not The Policea with a vocal cut backed by a dub rendition. Deep studio science and sound design paired with classic dub aesthetics, dubstep bass-weight, and halftime garage swing are very much in effect here and we hope this is the first of many collabs between the pair.

Review: Inca Dubs present the next release on their fine label as they head towards release number 100 and it features the legendary vocalist Earl Sixteen. This engaging digi-dub track 'The People's Rights' is dedicated to the working class, a powerful anthem for the many, not the few - conscious music with a real message. This track has been played by top sound systems like Channel One, King Earthquake, and Entebbe Sound so is an essential addition to any dub box, perfectly mastered by Russ Disciples.

Review: Indica Dubs rolls out more of their steel-plated warrior anthems here with the in-house production team stepping up next to Nando for Eternal Dub. This crucial 12" opens with the title cut, which is a collab between the two that rolls on moody drums and has an enchanting melodic lead up top, snaking its way to a better future. The rework is 'Eternal Dubwise,' a more wet and bottomless affair, then Indica Dubs and Nando reunite for 'Sacred Fire' which is busier, more energetic, with broken beats and playful leads. Last of all comes the dub-wise rework that is menacing and dark for those late-night hours.

It's lead by some fantastic Kora playing from UK musician Jude Winwood which lends it a truly authentic feel, as do the host of other traditional West African Instruments which colour its swaggering, deep cut grooves. Review: Firmly Rooted has done a great job of rolling outage rhythms over the last couple of years. The release rate and quality levels have remained high with the likes of breakout Leeds artist Breakface impressing back in May. Now, 18 months or so after their last outing, Ickle & Hotsteppas are back on the label with some more fresh dubs. First up, 'No Love, No Peace' Ft Prince Jaco is a big, fresh roller with great height and serious bass weight. The dub strips things back to melon-twisting echo and reverb and 'Mr Government' (feat Lionpulse) is an organic dub with brilliantly elastic bass. 'Leroy Sax Version' is a sax-laced dub of the same tune.

Review: 'Ain't No Sunshine' is one of the great soul songs. Originally recorded by Bill Withers, a legendary vocalist who simply walked away from the scene once he had said all he had to say, it has been covered many times. Here it is Yasushi Ide who steps up with a new version that comes featuring Ken Booth & U-Roy on this new 7" from Grand Gallery out of Japan. Indica Dubs - "Raw Dub Mix" (feat Indica dubs) (3:45)
Review: Over the last four years, Idren Natural's Dubolution-produced 'Jah Garden' - a steppers-powered roots/digi-dub fusion cut featuring a superb lead vocal - has been a dubplate special in Inidica Dubs' DJ sets. It's fitting then that they've finally decided to release it on their own label, with the killer original mix being joined by a trio of tasty dubs. Dubolution's own dub-style version is faithfully weighty and skeletal, while wisely emphasizing his own jazzy guitar licks, while Indica Dubs' flipside revisions are equally as potent. The 'Garden Dubplate Mix' is a punchy, full-throttle dancefloor dub workout, while the 'Raw Dub Mix' sounds like one of Mad Professor's wilder, heavier offerings.

Taking the reins for the latest limited 7" are Idren Natural and Kai Dub, who take one side each. Review: Uprising Sounds returns to Indica with a powerful original and even heavier version. "Militant Dub" leads heavily on the main synth line that's almost oriental in its allure and mysticism. As the title suggests, the rhythm is persistent and just on the right side of rigid to maintain the essential funk. "Dub The Bass" is a much deeper exploration of the low end as the warping bass is allowed to turn itself inside out as the track progresses. Standard Indica procedure: only 500 have been pressed.

'Dub Apprentice' kicks off with a heavy, steppers-driven groove, a tribute to the craft and an evolution of the sound. Indica Dubs' mixing expertise is apparent throughout, with thundering basslines and intricately layered dub effects adding texture and depth. In original form, "Clash Of The Titans" was a superlative dancehall tee-off between riddim and vocalist, yet Kahn and Outboxxer Hodge are up to the task of reworking the track with their remixes having apparently been rigorously road tested in dubplate form by the respected selectors like Mala, Kowton and Pinch. Those who have heard the first two records will know that Itinerant Dub have been responsible for some of the most essential music from the bass axis this year, and this third EP caps off their year in style. "Ur My ID" comes split into two parts, the first all rolling subs and whip crack snares with rusty delay trails taking the form of some kind of primitive UK funky, while the second takes a more frantic approach, with wobbling synth textures propelling some seriously hardcore vibes. 'Fire Pon A Dubplate' ignites the dance like a ruff-an-tuff steppers anthem fed through a buzzing sub-bass fuel injector, contaminated by trace particles of lysergic acid. On the flip, Itchy Robot from the Afterdark posse delivers the supremely catchy 'Playback', displaying a perfect balance of bounce and squelch hitched to a rocking and rolling digitised drum pattern.

Catch, Loot, Steal (Ital dub) (6:49)
Review: Rainy City Music's philosophy has always been to only release a few select recordings every year over the last 25 years. The Manchester-based label's objective is to avoid the saturation of music / plastic pollution since 1996 and their brand new vinyl 12" release to celebrate their latest milestone celebrating the deeper underground dance music sound of their city is finally here. The legendary Jamaican Dub Poet Mutabaruka appears with a brand new track 'Catch, Loot, Steal', plus an echo drenched Ital dub over on the flip. Not to mention a brand new rendition of Muta's timeless classic 'Dis Poem' released unofficially by Bobby Konders back in '86, remixed respectfully here by Irfan & Simbad.

Review: Prince Chamba joins forces for a superb new roots cut here with Slimmah Sound and Ital Horns. Their 'Secret Light' is a smoky and seductive sound with wobbling low ends and impassioned vocals delivered with a heart-aching twist as the melanotic horns fly up top and rousing chords add some hope. Slimmah Sound & Ital Horns then add their own heavily reverbed dub version and Slimmah Sound offers 'Melody Of Light' which is full of hypnotic harmonica leads. A second dub version once again reworks it into a stoner's delight that will sink you deep into the sofa.

Aba Ariginal meets I Jah Soloman - "Majestic Melody" (raw dub) (3:39)
Review: Prince David, Aba Ariginal and I Jah Saloman are some serious names when it comes to reggae. Their attest outing comes the Salomon Heritage label. First up is Prince David's original 'Solid As A Rock' with its plucked guitar riffs and endless echo doing sauce to the rolling drums and wooden hits. His stylish vocals are effortlessly cool up top, and then comes a nice deep dub version. Flip it over and you get the more rousing sounds and stepping rhythms of 'Majestic Melody' with its brassy horn leads. A raw dub of this one dials things right back to the bare essentials and it makes a different kind of mark as a result.

Review: "Say Yes To No" is the debut record from iDEAL Recordings label head Joachim Nordwall, aka the iDEALIST. It is an experimental affair couched in dub but run through with a sense of dread and plenty of noise. Expertly manipulated sound characterises each track - the distant drone of a factory floor, the hum and fizz of machines at work and the lumpy, loopy drums of automation. Fans of Adrian Sherwood's brain frying, punk influenced work are sure to lap up this most dark and dystopian dub exploration, and arresting vocal appearances from John Duncan and Jamaican poet Nazamba only heighten the whole experience.

Review: Producer Lewis M and all-star reggae studio band The Inn House Crew have enjoyed a very successful 2020, delivering a swathe of must-check releases in their distinctive roots-reggae style. They're at it again here, offering up an EP of vocal and dub cuts inspired by the current global pandemic and based on the Inn House Crew's superb 'The Face Covering Riddim'. Barry Isaac sets the tone with a soulful plea for mask-wearing compliance ('Mask Up'), before regular collaborator Winston Ready re-purposes some of the lyrics from 'Hit The Road Jack' and David Janson delivers a more traditional Rastafari interpretation on 'Give Praise'. Elsewhere, pianist Fish delivers some evocative solos on 'Masked Up Piano', while Lewis M and Ben bell deliver a quartet of weighty 'Masked' dubs.

Review: Iration is a reggae-pop outfit hailing from Santa Barbara, California. All members are from Hawaii and are one of the leading bands in the genre of 'sunshine reggae'. Around this time last year, the band released their seventh long player titled Coastin', which now receives a collection of remixes by some of the most exciting names in dub. Long Beach-based Josh Cardinali aka Stoney Eye Studios is the most featured artist here, with his standout rendition being the tropical dream riddims heard on 'Zen Island' and just wait for that reprise - woah wipeout! In addition, Jamaican legend The Scientist appears with two impressive versions of 'Right Here Right Now' (feat Eric Rachmany & Stick Figure) in the tradition of his mentor King Tubby.

Review: The legendary Iration Steppas reissue their second studio album Dubz From De Higher Regionz which is originally from 2004. Active for a quarter of a century now, the Leeds institutions pioneered a digital dub sound that transitioned the scene out of the militant jah stepper period into the future. This album perfectly embodies that with its sleek drums and contemporary studio effects, clean bass sounds and sheet metal hits. Plenty of hefty dubs make it a timeless collection and the inlay includes full discography and liner notes.

Review: After dropping many crucial dub albums on the likes of Twinkle Records, Music House Family, Reggae On Top, King Earthquake, and Conscious Sounds, Barry Issac now brings his brilliant vocal tones to Room In The Sky. Issac is well established as a top roots reggae talent who has worked with some of the most notable sound systems out there - Jah Shaka and Channel One being two of them. Here 12 tough riddims featuring some top talents like reggae trombonist Vin Gordon from the Skatalites and Winston Reedy who fronted The Cimarons get finished in style by his work up top. A timeless album for sure.

Review: It's a bold, bold statement to claim that a record was "recorded across decades". We all know genius can take time, and geniuses can be easy to distract, but there's slow and then there's starting a project in one aeon and ending it in another. In truth, Jon Iverson Meets Prins Emanuel, Golden Ivy, Inre Kretsen Grupp is that, and then not that. A collaborative project that sees some incredible minds meeting in the middle while never actually meeting. Starting with Iverson's original 1980 American home studio recordings, Seance Centre's Brandon Hocura took unfinished sonic sketches from the master musician and set to inviting 21st Century practitioners to complete the work. Looking to Malmo, Emanuel Sundin (Prins Emanuel), Ivar Lantz (Golden Ivy) and Martin Blomberg (Inre Kretsen Grupp) were drafted for that duty, and the result is this slow burn album somewhere between atmospheric badlands and kosmische.

Review: Birmingham's Iwarriyah builds on the success of his first two albums with a third follow up. This one features Ras Terry Asher and Sista Zari as well as fresh dose of authentic UK roots reggae with plenty ion clean and crisp dii dub stylings. The vocals are heady affairs that swirl above the whole mix, musing on oppression, segregation, spirituality in fine Raita-man fashion. All the vocal rollers come with a dub version and the whole record plays out with a contemporary cool and distinctly UK flavour that stands it apart.
