Review: The Numero group can hardly ever do any wrong and, as per usual, they've steamrolled their way to the top of our charts with a monstrously good new soul compilation. It was ten years ago this year that they released their Homeschooled compilation, which also championed the young talents of the 70s soul scene in the USA, so The Afterschool Special feels like a natural release from their end. And there's just so much talent in here. Number 66 in the series features must-have 7" rarities such as "Runnin' Wild" by Scott Three, who already sounds as mature as any adult, the squeakier voice of Jimi Hill, a gloriously funky little head-trip in "I Love You Still" by Cash, and so much more. This compilation is literally four sides of pure heat, and it's certainly yet another highly recommended Numero bombshell.

Review: Labels don't come much bigger or better than Numero when it cones to sounds like folk. This third volume in their Mid Atlantic Story series is another one for the armchair drag racers, lowrider and souleros that pays tribute to the sounds that came after soul. It's inspiration comes from the record industry's "metric trunkload of cruising compilations" - some of which were legit, many of which were not - that soundtracked an entire subculture. Sounds from the greater bay region and those from the east side all feature here with artists like Father's Children, Jato von Del and The Positive Sounds.

Review: Barbara Stant went on to be known as Queen of the Norfolk Sound having first been spotted in 1970 as a mere teenager. It was then that she auditioned for Noah Biggs, something of a Shiptown impresario who got her to record more than 10 tunes that spanned from sister funk t deep soul via Northern soul. Just eight years later in 1978, the soul train has left the station and disco was the big sound du jour so Stant was left out in the cold. My Mind Holds Onto Yesterday is a collection of the great music she recorded before her time passed, and a great album it is too.

Review: Numero Group has another of their superb soul gems here from former Mind & Matter bandmates James "Jimmy Jam" Harris and Michael Dixon. The duo teamed up in 1978 for this gospel-boogie banger which first came on the private Mad label, so is now mad hard to find. 'You're Everything' is a classy dancer with a big heart and those Good worshipping vocals taking things to new heights. The flip is no slouch either and keeps the grooves coming with 'You're All I Need' another timeless classic that will improve any set and record collection no end.

Review: The title of this one very much gives away what Numero's latest album is all about. It is a carefully curated of 17 superb gems from across the Northern Soul spectrum. Each of these tunes has its own unique character but they are united by the fact that they will all get the dancefloor rocking. As you would expect they are Motown-inspired but also full of freshness and plenty of them have signature British flair to the swinging grooves. Add in big strings, bigger vocals, driving beats and it's about the only Northern Soul record fans old or new need to get them going.

Review: Years after their 1970 sessions at Damon Studios in Kansas City, Bump & The Soul Stompers, under the direction of Jerald "Bump" Scott, adopted the name Unnatural Funk Band, a nod to the era's unconventional naming trends. Despite their efforts, "I Can Remember" failed to find a label. This led them to the famed Cavern Studios in Independence, Missouriiliterally carved out of a limestone cavern. Review: The Universal Togetherness Band were an anomaly during their short, bright burst of energy recording in the late 70s and early 80s. Columbia College's audio engineering program became their gateway to recording their huge swathes of visionary soul, which ranks up there with the all-time greats like Stevie Wonder. Numero already reissued some of the group's standout tracks, but now comes a wave of unreleased demos from the group's Andre Gibson, recorded between 1980 and 1984. These are simply stunning songs, from the mellow Rhodes ballad 'Breakaway' to the snappy 'Stuck On A Thrill', mixed in with little segues and odd offcuts that sound all the more charming with the naturally lo-fi nature of the recordings.

Review: Described by Numero as a viral smash hit, whose pathogenic preponderance warranted use of the term "viral" even before the advent of the internet, The Notations' 1973 steamer 'I'm Still Here' documents the peak of the Chicago vocal soul trio's salad days as band. This was the second 45 to come out after the TAD Records debut from 1969, 'Trying My Best To Find Her', and is a telling triplet waltz, scolding the feminine listener-subject for her many ignominious refusals of love. Revisiting the single for a new music video in 2024, The Notations are indeed still here, repeating an unlearned lesson; and clearly, they have no more to say, with the brightly-lit chorale 'What More Can I Say' backing up the B-side.

Review: US soul group and Chicago's Southside favourites The Notations endured many musical evolutions in their time. The group released on both major labels and minor ones and had the likes of Sly Johnson and Curtis Mayfield taking care of their production. Numero Group has put together a first overview of their indie-label golden age on the album Still Here 1967-1973 which is full of lush r&b ballads as well as socially-conscious soul. Two of their best now also get pressed up to this 7" with heart-rending A-side and the swooning 'What More Can I Say' both immediately drawing you in. These have been sampled by Anderson.Paak, redveil and so may well sound familiar.

Receiving critical acclaim for their two albums to date, and multiple TV performances, the Nile Rodgers-inspired female trio even got a video message of approval from the legend himself. Organic and authentic are two words that fit the classically trained troupe to a tea and, in the great soul tradition, covers are a necessity. Jim Spencer's 1979 track 'Wrap Myself Up in Your Love' didn't get much attention at the time - his attempt at doing disco wasn't well received - but thanks to the adoration of archive label The Numero Group, the song has seen a resurgence in covers and fans. The original vocal is expressive and powerful against some jangly funk guitars, whilst Say She She's rendition hones in on the sultry aspect of the track. Guitars are muted down to transform the song into a lovemaking slow jam, wind passages are introduced and the vocal is subtly powerful and sexy. This single has both Say She She's cover - as well as the original - on a 7" disc.

Review: One of four new vinyl issues, Numero Group deliver their compendium of regional funk and soul unknowns from Mel Alexander's Consolidated Productions label. The V/A forms a part of a new bundled volume of their longstanding compilation-compilation (yes!), made up of earlier funk cuts released by lesser-spotted interstate funk floggers throughout the 70s, including Tragar, Note, Saadia and Shoestring. Eccentric Soul is its name: first issued in 2004, this big splash homed in on the regional American delights in the genre, stretching as far as Wichita, Kansas, San Antonia, Texas and Norfolk and releasing an uncountable string of tracks by formerly unknown names based in small locales, who'd at that point only just caught onto the incipient funk movement. Here, you may dive into LA's cutthroat music business from 1961-1991, embodied in Mel Alexander's Consolidated Productions, which lay among the longest running Black-owned independent record conglomerates of the 20th century.
