Life Out Of Balance
Cat: FR 032. Rel: 03 Feb 16
Life Out Of Balance (9:33)
It's You (9:23)
Out From Under (5:40)
Review: First surfacing back in 2006 on UK IDM label SCSI-AV, the Lost Trax project has allegedly been a platform for any number of artists to produce under the cloak of anonymity, all identity shorn so the focus remains on the music. After a clutch of 12"s for Tabernacle at the turn of the decade, Lost Trax was reactivated last year with a contribution to a Shipwrec 12" and now migrates to Rotterdam's finest, Frustrated Funk. On the opening title track, "Life Out Of Balance," Lost Trax display a nervous fidgety energy and a looseness in execution that will sound quite thrilling on the dancefloor, whilst "It's You" is a muddy yet heavenly cut that will appeal to fans of Terekke. Closer "Out From Under" finds crystalline electro rhythms caked in thick tape hiss too.

She's From Manchester EP

Kicking (Locked Groove) (0:21)
Stuck In The Void (Locked Groove) (0:25)
Mona's Pacer (4:32)

Suffering Experience (5:53)
Review: The Young Hegelians once reparteed that Manchester was the geographical birthing place of the Industrial Revolution. Mysterious Manc monarch Louis The 4th nods at this fact with an express delivery straight from the millworks; even in the most brutal of working conditions, one might find love. 'She's From Manchester' evokes plumes of ashen smog as the waste byproduct of an excessively productive, surplus labourious love affair. Foundries founder, and railway workshops curdle under the weight of mechanical process, as the fast propulsions of 'Sub Genetic' and 'Stuck In The Void' quell the soul as much as they do exhaust the body, outstripping and going beyond the injurious demand to work overtime. 'Suffering Experience' closes on a dulled but continual note, as wan reverberations resound in a now abandoned factory.

Rootedness (5:14)
Conception (5:43)
Two Days Before Leaving (5:15)
Tumultuous Groove (5:40)
Frequencies (1:52)
Review: Louis the 4th is a master of groovy and percussive techno and if you need any more evidence of that then check out this new EP on TH Tar Hallow. 'Rootedness' is a roller with slick hi-hats ticking away over rubbery bass. 'Conception' is more edgy and kinetic with razor-sharp snares over more silky drums. 'Two Days Before Leaving' has hefty dub undercurrents and panel-beaten loops that make you march while 'Tumultuous Groove' is a more intense number with grit and steel in its robust groove framework. 'Frequencies' shuts down with a haunting and eerie synth mood.

Ascent Of Mount Agung EP
Cat: PRRUKBLK 117. Rel: 16 Jan 25
Balinese Morality (5:07)
Drive System (5:22)
Memoir (5:23)
End Of June (5:15)
Review: Louis The 4th made something of a splash in 2024, delivering a string of well-regarded EPs on TH Tar Hollow, Prima Materia and Planet Rhythm. He begins his 2025 release campaign with a typically assured return to the latter label, taking us on an imaginary climb up Mount Agung in Indonesia. Hints of this loose theme can be spotted on opener 'Balinese Morality', a pleasingly melodic (but undeniably tough) techno workout in which rising and falling synth loops dance atop a punchy rhythm track and deep, booming bass. The struggle onwards up the mythical volcano is reflected in the dark, breathless and percussively layered techno stomper 'Drive System'. Elsewhere, 'Memoir' explores similar sonic territory to 'Balinese Morality', while 'End of June' tiptoes a fine line between lo-fi techno hedonism and melody-rich peak-time hypnotism

B-STOCK: Record slightly warped
Review: ***B-STOCK: Record slightly warped***

For several years Luciano was one of the kings of the underground. The Swiss-Chilean rode the crest of the minimal wave and had his own distinctive Latin edge that marked him out in a class of one. Now he is back to DJing - often with his equally heralded brethren Ricardo Villalobos - as well as producing. Rawax has the latest goods from the man in the form of this suitably epic two-track EP. 'Assanti Sana' is all subtly shifting grooves and stringy percussive lines with some textured, expressionistic synth lines. 'In Xs' is deeper, and warmer, with ever-evolving rhythms and lots of stringy lines all woven together in an intricate fashion.

Pattern Recognition (5:37)
Recoil (5:10)
Smiling In Slow Motion (4:52)
Magnesium (5:20)
Review: Chloe Lula's 'Torpor', released on Blueprint, delivers a dark and intense collection of techno tracks, each exploring a distinct sonic territory. Side-1 opens with 'Pattern Recognition', a heavy, deep techno track that feels ominous and otherworldly, creating an alien atmosphere with its pulsating rhythms. Following it is 'Recoil', a brooding, sinister track that blends deep basslines with a passive-aggressive energy, hinting at EBM influences to build a shadowy tension. On Side-2, 'Smiling In Slow Motion' stands out with its unsettling progression. It's like being caught in space turbulence, with a sci-fi aesthetic that grows darker and more nerve-wracking as the track unfolds, creating a haunting techno anthem. The EP closes with 'Magnesium', a deeper and more spacious production. Its heavy echo and subliminal drops provide a subtle, yet powerful undercurrent, showcasing great attention to production detail. Torpor is a gripping, shadowy EP that will appeal to listeners drawn to the darker, more atmospheric side of techno, all while maintaining a tight, high-quality sound throughout. This is definitely taking techno one step further.

Red (5:08)
Red (Ossia remix version 1) (5:17)
Red (Ossia remix version 2) (5:12)
Review: Lurka is back on his own label Damage which is a place for harder-edged sounds and here includes remixes from Ossia. The one original, 'Red', is a thrilling rhythmic workout with a skeletal kick drum pattern that is broken and loopy, and deft percussion layered in over the top next to wet synths and undulating bass. Ossia's first rework spins it out into a more distorted and manic cut fizzing with static electricity while the second is slightly more paired back but no less menacing. This one has been mastered at Scape in Berlin and is mad limited to just 100 copies so do not wait around.

59Bel Vol 3

Ian Maur - "IM 003" (6:05)
Deluka - "My Underground" (6:07)
Louis The 4th - "Ongoing Motifs" (5:15)
Model HZ - "Render" (6:29)
Askkin - "Life Spectator" (3:41)
Review: 59 Bel is back with another transmission from its HQ in Paris and again it's an interesting take on techno. Ian Maur opens with a minimal cut that is urgent and hurried yet barely there. Deluka brings some sci-fi imagery to the loopy sounds of 'My Underground' and Louis The 4th takes off on dry, glitchy minimal beats on the serene 'Ongoing Motifs.' Model HZ's 'Render' is a more synth-laced bit of classically inclined techno and Askkin's 'Life Spectator'' comes full circle with another eerie, sparse sound for freaking out late-night dancers.

6SISS & Hypnoskull - "Losss" (5:21)
Low Order - "Taste My Venom" (5:05)
Skumring - "Corpse-Ridden" (5:59)
Review: Worldwide Heavy Industries Vol.1 is the latest wax drop from Flux Musical Art and Brutal Forms and it makes for an immersive trip deep into industrial soundscapes and futuristic themes. Dominik Muller's intricate 'Too Many Posers' soon sucks you in followed by Ryuji Takeuchi's dynamic 'In Your Mind' with its unusual rhythmic innovation. On the B-side, 6SISS and Hypnoskull's intense 'Losss' gets super raw with an industrial edge, while Low Order's 'Taste My Venom' explores darker experimental territory. Skumring's atmospheric 'Corpse-Ridden' closes the album with a mood as dark as you would expect given the title.

OFF/GRID - "One Stab Ahead" (5:25)
Gunjack - "Memory Man" (6:15)
Antic Soul - "Mandalore" (4:35)
Lenny San - "Hedonist" (5:11)
Review: Planet Rhythm has been one of the premier hard techno labels for over 30 years now. Exploring some different avenues in the last decade, the label recently launched a series of heavy dub techno related records identified as DUBWARS. Volume two features four different artists this time with each submitting a new piece to the label focus. Fans of Basic Channel's 'Phylyps Trak' should quickly head to OFF/GRID - 'One Stab Ahead' for that main room filler. Gunjack's 'Memory Man' is another upbeat killer in its own right adding a bit of acid along with the melodic chord progression. For the second side, Antic Soul's 'Mandalore' stirs in a bit of house culture to the hard dub techno sound to great effect. Lastly, Lenny San bring's the party to their feet with 'Hedonist'. Heavy techno heads should really enjoy this packed 12"

Ohm & Octal Industries - "System" (vs Federson) (7:53)
Lee Holman - "Absorbed By The Elements" (5:06)
Andrea Cichecki - "Universe Blue" (7:00)
El Choop - "Vixen" (7:40)
Review: Over the past couple of years the Ohm Series of 12"s has quietly become one of the best in the field of dub techno, always carrying a respectable range of artists pushing the sound forwards, and now carrying the kind of weight which tells you you're getting the best these artists have to offer. On the seventh entry we can hear Ohm himself, aka Bjarnar Jonsson and Octal Industries teaming up for the deeply submerged creeper 'System (vs Federson)', while Lee Holman brings something brighter, more Motor City-inspired to the table on 'Absorbed By The Elements'. Andrea Cichecki slinks into a mellow, swung house mood on 'Universe Blue' and El Choop leans in on the sound design around his chord sounds to create the rhythmic heat in his outstanding 'FORPOD'. As ever, the bar remains high with the Ohm Series offerings.

Review: Richard Brophy's First Cut returns with Wait For One...Then Three Arrive, featuring a bunch of the very best homegrown talents. On the first side, Carlow-based artist Tr One serves up the hypnotic dub chord journey 'Fold', followed over on the flip by Lunar Disko's Lerosa who's in fine form as always on the dark techno soul of 'Crash 2'. Lastly, Giles Armstrong presents his third contribution on the Dublin imprint in the form of a strobed-out slow burner titled 'Deep Is For Dopes!'. Tip!

Lenny San - "Das Ego" (5:25)
Dave Simon - "Dubby Stomper" (5:44)
Review: Planet Rhythm's third transmission is another various artists' affair that takes no prisoners. This is straight-ahead techno that is proud of its perfect planed linear loops and ability to get you in a mediative head space. Erdem Yetim kicks off with the seriously weighty 'Perfect Silence' and its panel-beaten loops. Simone Tavazzi's 'Pyramid' is another hefty kicker with icy hi hat ringlets and fleshy drums while 'Das Ego' is as good as reductive dub techno gets. Dave Simon hits the nail on the head with his 'Dubby Stomper.'

Review: London producer Leeway has cooked up a brilliant album here that suggests he is obsessive about detail and magical about rhythm and groove. His tracks are super tight takes on techno and grime with elements of trance and plenty of bits for the 160 heads to get stuck into. It's one for the heart of the dancefloor or headphones alike - stoner rave for strobe lit settings, paranoid ideas fleshed out into fever dreams and alien lifeforms. It's got a hyper feel, AI feel to it but also plenty of ritualistic dance DNA that has got us mightily impressed. One of the most original albums you'll hear this year.
