Bombeardo - "Plaid-Champ" (1:01)
Bombeardo - "Get The Fork" (1:01)
Bombeardo - "Roc The Place" (2:32)
Review: Two producers "supplying listeners with a steady dose of flips on a regular basis", 20 Dolla Julio & Bombeardo distribute just that at street level, spicing up our 7" crates with four ratchet, crunk instrumental hip hop releases. 'Here We Go' melds overloaded trap with swung "go" samples and distorted edges, while 'Plaid - Champ' gets at organ-twanging swing and alien spaceship zaps, upping the wonk to higher proportions. Closing cuts 'Get The Fork Up' and 'Roc The Place' switch into dancehall and 90s gangsta boom bap. "If everybody's here then do it to it, cos there ain't nothing to it!" correctly goes the vocal sample. Smouldering stuff from the Californian duo.

7th Wonder - "Daisy Lady" (4:11)
Blackbusters - "Old Man" (4:25)
Review: 7th Wonder - "Daisy Lady" is such a special and in-demand tune that no matter how many times it gets reissued it always sells out. This latest pressing on Breaks & Beats is a hand-numbered and limited edition 7" that is backed with Blackbusters's 'Old Man'. It's a cosmic funk workout with some great synth magic drawn out and weaved into funky breaks with all the bells and whistles (literally.) But really that 7th Wonder jam is the one here with its pumping drums and lavish horn sections all making for a colourful and vibrant wedge of irresistible funk.

Akiko & Masayasu Tzboquchi - "Love Theme From Sparticus" (feat Mbanja Ritchy aka B-Bandj - Clear Day mix) (4:34)
Review: Tom Browne's 1980 single 'Funkin' For Jamaica' has long been something of an anthem - a hybrid funk/boogie classic that remains a staple in sets of hip-hop, disco and soul DJs alike. Given its ubiquity, covering the song is fraught with danger, but remarkably Japanese producer Akiko and guest vocalist Mbanja Richy have successfully put a new spin on it. Their take is subtly tougher and more synth-heavy, with bilingual French/English vocals, nods to Zouk music and a bassline so squelchy it could have been lifted from a P-funk record. Over on the flip, the pair go mellow, deep and laidback on a pleasingly skewed hip-hop soul cover of Terry Callier's legendary vocal interpretation of Alex North's 'Love Theme' from 'Spartacus'. Inspired stuff all told.

You're Gonna Love Me (3:44)
Review: The Super Disco Edits stable returns to action with a new set of edits, two disco-leaning versions of B & The Family's disco classics. The first is the instantly recognisable "A Good Time", a disco bomb like no other and exactly the sort of tune that makes people think of the word 'party'. On the flip, "You're Gonna Love Me" is more of a boogie monster reinterpreted and juiced up with some extra electro power in its low-end and, of course, its chunky beats and percussion to create that added dance floor effect. Tha bomb!

Organised Konfusion - "Prisoners Of War" (4:35)
Review: Consistently on-point and expertly dug, Originals continue to join the dots with creativity. Here we rewind to 1973 for Babe Ruth's biggest cut "The Mexican". Its lolloping, rolling bassline and spacious drums have been sampled by many but Organised Konfusion's use is definitely one of the best. Needle down and listen as Prince Po and Pharoahe Monche lay down lucid 1991 flows with a serious political agenda that's still just as resonant today. Timeless on both sides.

Nuthin' But A G Thang (3:03)
Review: The Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band has become the latest jewel in the Big Crown. Lead by Bjorn Wagner, they have stopped several essential recordings not he label, all defined by their famous steel pan sound. Often they turn to covers of the classics such as they did back in March and this time around they take aim at the much loved and low slung hip-hop classic 'Nuthin' But A G Thang' by Dr Dre. In their hands it becomes something else entirely but still delightfully low slung and sleazy. This one is backed with 'How We Do' which is another loveably fresh sound.

Review: Big Crown is one of our favourite labels here at HQ. The funk and soul they serve up is perfectly aged yet never overly nostalgic and this new one is another case it point. It's the latest from the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band and features two singles take from their latest and greatest album Expansions which landed back in June. As always they bring their own unique steel drum sounds and tropical Caribbean vibes to funk music. 'Raise It Up' is a deep cut joint with big horns and rippling steel drums puddles while 'Space' is a more lumpy groove with the drums more front and centre.

Review: Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band is an enigmatic steel pan collective from Hamburg that has a hardcore fan following around the world and a new album on the way that is superb. They are loved for their covers of hip-hop classics and last year served up a version of the Stranger Things theme tune but this time out we get 'Love For The Sake Of Dub' of 45 rpm. It is another pair of funky tunes with the signature brass sounds front and centre as the fat bottom rhythms roll deep and fleshy. Another gem from this leftfield outfit.

Mercy Tree (3:50)
Review: Huzzah! New music from Liam Bailey, who has voiced a couple of the most gorgeous reggae, soul and dub fusion 7"s we've got in our collection in recent years. He has, we're told, recently been recording a new album and the two tunes pressed up here on Big Crown are taken from it. El Michels Affair man Leon Michels is the go-to producer once more for Bailey and they strike gold as always with 'Dance With Me'. It is a hella catchy two-stepper that harks back to the earliest days of reggae. On the flip, 'Mercy Tree' has hard-hitting drums and big horns that come with a powerhouse vocal that speaks of racial tensions that sadly persist throughout the world. It's a standup jam with a potent message.

Lavern Baker - "Wrapped, Tied & Tangled" (2:05)
Jackie Wilson & Lavern Baker - "Think Twice" (2:31)
Review: This must-check "45" gathers together two in-demand gems from the glory days of funk and soul in the middle of the 1960s, both of which originally appeared on the iconic Brunswick label. Side A sports LaVern Baker's hard-to-find 1967 single 'Wrapped, Tied & Tangled', a breezy but heavy chunk of soul rich in jangling piano flourishes, punchy horns and languid grooves, all topped off with a killer lead vocal. Turn to the flip and you'll find Baker's 1965 collaboration with Jackie Wilson, 'Think Twice', a heavier, funk-fuelled outing that draws much inspiration from classic rhythm & blues. It goes without saying that both tracks are essential.

Lavern Baker & Jackie Wilson - "Think Twice (Rated X)" (2:24)
Review: For a classic 7" that makes you wish you could have experienced the rock and roll and blues heyday, these two dusty gems by Lavern Baker and Jackie Wilson are a great start. Taken from 1960, "Bumble Bees" by Baker is a chiming, doo-wop sing-a-long love song with a tastefully disgruntled character, while Baker & Wilson provide the excellent and X-rated "Think Twice", which sings about taboo topics like cocaine, pussy and reefa. It also boasts lyrics like 'son of a bitch', 'I aint gonna kiss your ass no more' and 'I've had enough of your shit' - not to mention the other out-there obscenities for the time which include references to oral sex. Review: A timely revisit to two of the stand out covers on Italian jazz/lounge posterboy Andrea Balducci's 2012 album Bloom. "Spooky" is a soft, sweet and succinctly measured take on Shapiro and Middlebrooks' mid 60s standard while "Hurts So Bad" is a respectful twist on Weinstein, Harshman and Randazzo's similar era classic that was made famous by Linda Ronstadt years later.

I Need You (2:58)
Review: Four years ago, Super Disco Edits unearthed a stash of previously unreleased solo recordings by sometime Revelation member (and session vocalist on countless classic disco and boogie hits) Phillip Ballou. Having released just two of those songs - the brilliant 'Ain't Nothing Like The Love' and 'Nothing For Real'- back in 2017, they've finally decided to offer-up two more. A-side 'We'll Be Together' is particularly impressive, with Ballou adding his silky, effortlessly soulful vocals to a sparkling backing track that adds spacey synthesizer sounds and cosy female backing vocals to a Philly Soul inspired groove. Over on the flip, 'I Need You' is a sugary but heartfelt ballad in which Ballou is accompanied by little more than an electric piano and a few sustained synthesizer chords. It's a spine-tingling combination.

Review: 2020 marks two decades since the Bamboos, Australia's premier deep funk combo, first made an impression in their home city of Melbourne. The Lance Ferguson-helmed outfit have been busy in the studio this year cooking up some suitably celebratory music to mark their 20th birthday, with this must-check "45" the latest missive to hit the streets. A-side 'Hard Up' is a typically raw and heavy affair, with regular vocalist Kylie Audist excelling herself over a typically tight-but-loose blend of hazy horns, Hammond motifs, crunchy drums and flash-fried guitar licks. Just as impressive is B-side 'Ride on Time', a surprise - but genuinely killer - heavy funk translation of Black Box's 1989 piano house favourite of the same name.

Destined To Get Tested
Review: "Bambouche" from the Vanguard Squad's Operation Snatchback is a 12" single of hip-hop remixes in support of the forthcoming full-length album, "Spectacular Vernacular". The 12" features the song "Operation Snatchback" (a modernization of The Coup's 1994 track "Takin' These"), a condemnation of the American "melting pot." The remix was made during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Considering the disparity of the human condition, based on race and class, it's obvious that though we've come a long way, a great distance remains. It should be obvious as well, if not from looking back a decade, but looking back a hundred years, that "protest songs" don't change the world. A good song can inspire, incite, give you a moment's reflection, but it won't change much.

Believe Me
Review: Written by Eddie Bo, sung by Marilyn Barbarin, executed by The Soul Finders... This exclusively New Orleans affair oozes the state's deep soul funk signature through every note. "Reborn" is the most celebrated cut from her decades of hard work and it's not hard to see why; tight guitar and horn Q&As and her gutsy, heartfelt vocal is a gospel we can all testify to. "Believe Me", meanwhile, is a much bluesier, soul-led ballad. A naked production that mainly focus on Marilyn's warm vocals and shimmering guitar, the more you listen the more you hear some superbly positioned drums and crooning horns that build and build with the sentiments. Impeccable.

Review: Dave Barker of 'Double Barrel' fame is back on the mix here for the Original Gravity label. This is the second form the many in as many months and is on the faster end of the reggae tempo scale so prepare to be swept up and skanking in no time. The lo-fi 60s reggae and early ska vibes are strong on this one as the dancing Hammond organ chords compliment Barker's effortless flow. This 7" features two previously unreleased tracks from the vaults of Raina Records, booth of which are produced and arranged by Lewis Carroll. One is an unheard version from 1984 of 'I've Had My Share of Loving You', a sentimental, slow and smoochy song for late night lovers. Review: Jumping from his own Bombastic Jam label back to Jalapeno suggests Basement Freaks is set to release a new album. Exciting. Especially considering the raw power and interesting diversions this new material has taken. "Work It Out" is reminiscent of Nextmen with its grizzly distorted riff and lyrical impact. "A Blues Thang", meanwhile, lives up to its name with harmonica-swallowing splendour and "That Little Thing You Do" oozes 80s funk boogie power. And while "Gotta Make Me A Gun" might sound aggressive, trust us it's not... it's as soft and playful as Rick James and Bootsy having a cuddle and kiss with a Moog synth.

Review: Raised in the Bay Area, the Bash Bros (Piseas & the LEFT) have been active in California's underground hip hop scene since 2000. They were discovered by producer Style Misia ("Making The Rounds" Rasco featuring Rass Kass, Scarub's "Answer To The Meaning") which lead to 3 regional CD releases, numerous mixtape appearances & 1 internationally distributed 12". Known for street conscious lyrics & a relentless hand-to-hand hustle the Bash Bros have independently moved more than 10,000 units to date! They make it clear if you don't respect nothing else you're going to respect the hustle. This new 12" is blessed with the seasoned production of Architect (Homeless Derilix), Style Misia, Dextah & B-sides. "The Session" is the title track which features the Bash Bros along side underground legend Planet Asia (Cali Agents) as they entice the world to roll up a fat-one & blow it in the face of those who oppress the masses. Featured first on Kevvy Kev's The Drum 90.1FM KSZU - the always entertaining LEFT MC opens the track in the cockiest manner possible, setting you up for the rapid fire flow of Planet Asia who then hands it off to the bruising combos of heavyweight Piseas - putting the nail in the coffin on those who oppose legalizing the sticky icky. All while the Atlanta native producer B-sides hits you with drums harder than a run away train. "The Session" is a certified radio and mixtape favourite. Flip the record over to "Dirty Work" & "Burn Em Up" where the LEFT & Piseas exhibit both individual star quality and collective range as songwriters. "Dirty Work" features the LEFT dishing you a verbal beat down like you stole something over a double time beat laced by Chicago native producer Dextah. Then on "Burn Em Up" Piseas addresses all the doubters with a psychedelic beat provided by Cali OG producer Architect (Homeless Derilix). In his signature massive sound, Piseas lays down the competition line after line as he demonstrates why California's Bash Bros offer a breath of fresh air to all those who love good.

Review: Latin soul and boogaloo king Joe Bataan reportedly wasn't a big fan of his 2005 album Call My Name, though fans and critics all loved it. For the record, it's a fine set of classic-sounding Latin-fired soul, with the title track - here pressed on seven-inch for the first time - being one of the highlights. With Bataan providing a typically iconic, emotive lead vocal over a Clavinet-heavy backing track rich in crunchy drums, killer bass, spacey synth sounds and flanged guitar licks, it remains a fabulous, floor-friendly song. Turn to the flip for the Bataan-free instrumental mix - an enjoyable take that just lacks his trademark touch.

Review: The ever vital Boogie Back has another pearler on its hands here. This 7" is an SOS Band influenced double header produced by Ernie McKone, with Cheri Maree on the vocals. Firstly, 'Time Waits' pairs nice analogue drum work and big, pixelated chords straight from the 80s. It's a sugar sweet tune with a buttery smooth vocal that will get those rumps wiggling. Flip it over and you will find 'Is It You', a more slow and sentimental tune with splashy chords and bendy bass. The vibe is steamy and romantic, with the sort of tempting groove that you won't be able to resist.

Review: A Classic 12" from possibly their most classic period of time, the "Licensed To Ill" Era. Includes the track "I'm Down", which was deleted from their "Ill Communication" album due to an unlicensed Beatles sample. Get yours quick before it's too late!

Off The Books (feat Big Punisher & Cuban Link - acappella)
Review: Beatnuts always sound best in the summertime and "Off The Books" started the 2 year Beatnuts summer track lockdown with "Watch Out Now". This features late Big Pun at his finest, flipping shit like Wafflehouse mammas in Alabama. Signature Beatnuts infected flute loop and vocal sample make essential git down material. I used magnetic poetry to make that last sentence.

Are You Ready

The Beatnuts - "Are You Ready"
Bill Doggett - "Honky Tonk"
Review: "Honky Tonk" by Bill Doggett is a James Brown produced cut from 1969. Highly sought after and funky as hell, this is the funk version, not the blues version. On the flip is the Beatnuts best tracks never to get a single release. Fully jacking the Bill Doggett break, this is from the first Beatnuts album and was ridiculously quiet on the original pressing.

I Know You Care (Produced B Y Roy Ayers) (5:33)
It's Your Love (Produced B Y Roy Ayers) (4:02)
Review: Expansion Records' continues to delve into the bulging archives of Roy Ayers' influential Uno Melodic Records imprint, which issued some superb jazz-funk, soul and boogie throughout the 1980s. Here they offer a new pressing of Ethel Beatty's sought-after, Roy Ayers' produced 1981 double A-side. For some reason they've reversed the running order, with side A offering original flipside 'It's Your Love', a Dee Dee Bridgwater co-authored slow jam that's soulful, seductive and sumptuous. Over on the reverse you'll find the more celebrated ''I Know You Care', a deep disco number full of glistening guitar riffs, smooth chords and warming grooves. In a word: luscious
