Review: 1997's Slow Traffic to the Right found Bennie Maupin navigating between cerebral jazz and deep funk with style and ease. Though generally known for his abstract leanings and serious musical demeanour, here he showed a lighter side - not least because he is actually smiling on the album cover - while diving into grooves shaped by his time with Herbie Hancock's Headhunters. With help from rhythm masters like Mike Clark and Paul Jackson, Maupin swaps out ECM austerity for signature Oakland bounce, so tracks like 'It Remains to Be Seen' and 'You Know the Deal' excel with newfound swagger without abandoning his jazz roots. It's a compelling pivot into accessible, funky and smart jazz soul.

Review: The debut album Approach to Anima by Maya Ongaku landed originally in May 2023 but sold out quickly so is now being reissued. Initially available as a rare import, the album features Sonoda's fluid guitar and vocals, Takano's undulating bass, Ikeda's ethereal woodwinds and delicate synths and percussion to create a calm yet unsettling atmosphere. Tracks like 'Approach' and 'Water Dream' showcase their diverse influences by blending "Neo-Dada and Fluxus" with 1960s recording advancements. Based in serene Enoshima, the trio's music is free-spirited and reveals hidden depths and untamed vitality which reflect their ongoing creative journey.

Review: Lizzy McAlpine's third studio album, Older, is a poignant and emotionally charged collection of fourteen tracks that showcase her remarkable talent as a songwriter and vocalist. Delving into themes of love, loss, and the complexities of growing older, McAlpine's heartfelt lyrics and captivating vocals resonate deeply with listeners. The album opens with the enchanting 'The Elevator,' setting the tone for what's to come with its harmonious melodies and introspective lyrics. From there, McAlpine navigates through the highs and lows of relationships in tracks like 'Come Down Soon' and 'Like It Tends To Do,' where she grapples with insecurity and uncertainty. Throughout Older, McAlpine's songwriting prowess shines as she candidly explores her personal experiences, including the death of her father and her own struggles with mental health. Tracks like 'All Falls Down' and 'March' offer poignant reflections on grief and resilience, while 'Vortex' delivers a powerful climax with its haunting vocals and stirring instrumentation. With each track, McAlpine expertly crafts a sonic landscape that draws listeners in, weaving together lush instrumentals with her emotive voice. From the tender piano chords to the soaring violins, every element of Older feels purposeful and deeply evocative.

Review: A major departure from Les McCann’s earlier acoustic jazz and soul jazz outings, this exquisite 11-track record by the Kentucky pianist, vocalist and composer was the first in his discography to extensively feature electronic instrumentation, making it a favourite sample seep of producers such as Madlib and J Dilla. Following a studio-driven will by McCann to expound a deep, introspective and dynamic fusion sound, the record’s cosmic outcries - guaranteed by its use of ARP Odyssey and Fender systems - serve to transcend the expectations of the soul jazz genre. At times it sounds predictive of motorik kosmische, as on ‘Let’s Gather’, and even the raunchier wah-inflectors, such as ‘The Dunbar High School Marching Band’, carry an huge re-verbiage, reminiscent of the ambitious abysses of space.

Originally licensed to Grove Music, this still remarkable album features renowned musicians such as Sly and Robbie, Ansel Collins on organ, Clinton Fearon from The Gladiators on lead guitar, and Bernard Harvey of The Wailers on piano. The recordings took place at Channel One and were mixed at King Tubby Studio and every single tune cuts deep and with great authenticity.

Review: Malcolm McLaren, probaly best known for managing the New York Dolls and the Sex Pistols, left a significant mark on pop culture as a writer, musician, and fashion designer. His 1994 album Paris, produced by Robin Millar (Sade, The Style Council, Everything But The Girl) on the French Vogue label, is now available on vinyl for the first time. The reissue coincides with the upcoming Paris Olympic Games, where the lead track 'Paris Paris' featuring Catherine Deneuve has been officially adopted and is expected to gain widespread attention. The album also includes collaborations with Francoise Hardy and Amina, making it a notable showcase of McLaren's eclectic artistry.

Rene (10:00)
Omega (8:24)
Review: Jackie McLean's Let Freedom Ring (1962) marks a pivotal moment in his career, where he boldly steps into uncharted territory, blending hard bop with avant-garde elements. The album, recorded at Van Gelder Studio, features McLean on alto sax, supported by Walter Davis Jr. on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. The track 'Omega' stands out for its innovative approach, blending syncopated bass and piano rhythms with sharp, high-register saxophone lines. The song shifts effortlessly between tempos, showcasing the tight interplay between McLean and his band, particularly Higgins' relentless drumming and Davis' rhythmic accents. While 'Melody for Melonae' often receives attention for its emotive power, 'Omega' exemplifies McLean's forward-thinking vision, offering a spacious and harmonically rich canvas that predates many later "modern" jazz experiments. The album's overarching theme of "freedom" resonates on multiple levelsimusical, expressive, and perhaps even socialireflecting McLean's journey beyond traditional hard bop into a more liberated, dissonant sound. McLean's collaboration with Blue Note during this period produced a series of groundbreaking records, with Let Freedom Ring standing as a testament to his willingness to challenge conventions while staying rooted in the vibrant energy of jazz.

Review: Mculo represents himself on his latest full-length dance LP Bedroom Artist, deepening *eo ipso* his relationship to personal space and making music for 'the other'. In his own words, "I found myself making music for everyone else. What would other musicians think about this record? Would this track get me more gigs? The process of creating become secondary and I fell out of love with it entirely." Clearly having identified the wrong way to go about things, no sooner than this did he embark on an emancipatory approach. Shedding any conscious attachment to external priorities, insofar as he could, Bedroom Artist testifies the ironic power of the bedroom as a site of abject isolation at its worst, yet studious focus at its best. The sonic result of this conclusion, for Mculo, is io-fi, jammy, trip-hoppy beat and beatless excursions, best among which are 'Magogos Garden' and 'Where Are You From, From'.

Review: Pantechnicons of Philadelphia soul, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes reached their musical peak with Teddy Pendergrass between 1972 and 1975. Their 1975 album Wake Up Everybody hears Pendergrass' last vocal contribution to a band before he went solo; the record is filled with thought-provocations and gnomic lyrics, and became famous more by way of its covers than its originals. Returning the favour, 'Wake Up Everybody' was later covered by John Legend & The Roots, while 'Don't Leave Me This Way' became a disco classic thanks to the vamping vocal verves of Thelma Houston. This 750-copy 50th anniversary repress now comes with a special bonus: a rare 11-minute remix of 'Don't Leave Me This Way' by remixing pioneer Tom Moulton.

Review: Debuting on Soda Gong, Memotone aka. Will Yates brings new album Fever Of The World to our ears. Sporting a high temperature and a brain foggy pall, the world today is indeed insalubriously feverish, and Memotone crafts an arresting record in tribute to the Earth, serving as both an elegy and an elixir for it depending on how you hear it. Built on and around a set of compositional and live techniques fashioned over years, Yates' newest output is amorphous and palliative, putting our symptomatic souls at rest, with softly truck caresses by gong and pan; twinkles on the piano; real, boughed, and fed back mic-ups. The whole thing plays out like a half-hypnoic reverie, in which dream-images coalesce with engrams of the past and made manifest in the auditory field; be these the deja entendus of the abstracted children's laughter on 'Fever Of The World' or the sense of mobile, civic, automatic movement, via a continual textural wash, on 'The Bus'.

Review: Mi Latinoamerica Sufre embarks on a musical journey that redefines the electric guitar's role within tropical Latin music. The album, crafted by the Meridian Brothers, draws from the melodious, intricate rhythms of African highlife and soukous guitar bands, popular both in coastal Colombian pico sound system dances and across Africa. Eschewing typical prog or psych rock distortions, the sound embraces a clean, pure approach, honoring '70s Congolese rumba, Ghanaian highlife, and Nigerian afrobeat. The compositions on Mi Latinoamerica Sufre intricately blend Latin rhythms like cumbia, champeta and Brazilian tropicalia with underground psychedelic rock. Through the character Junior Maximiliano the Third, the album delves into themes of self-discovery, humorously navigating through nostalgia, paranoia, and shared experiences. Alvarez's vocal versatility enriches the album's sonic storytelling, complemented by visual narratives from Colombian artist Mateo Rivano. This innovative concept album unfolds as a poignant exploration of identity, offering a fresh perspective on Afro-Latino musical traditions and psychological states.

Review: Michi Guerrero aka Michi sets upon unleashing her debut album Dirty Talk unto the world. The LA-based singer-songwriter begun in pop before finding her truer feet in making warm neo-soul, in which discipline she has remained. Backing up a recent throng of exquisite Knxwledge flips of her earliest singles, the new record documents productions of a near-equal calibre from Blake Rhein (Durand Jones & The Indications) and Paul Cherry. Retroistic, channelling a Motown-reminiscent sound, the lyrics deal in interpersonal dilemmas unique to the modern day; hear the a-romantic de-subjectvations of 'If You Want Me' and the existentialisms of 'There's No Heaven', the latter being a prize house music cut, not to be missed by DJs.

Review: Germany's funk collective expand their sound on this release, recorded live at the MPS studio in the Black Forest. The raw, break-heavy foundation remains, but the album ventures into jazz, soul, and psychedelia, capturing an organic energy that feels both spontaneous and precise. Tracks like 'Open The Gate' blend punchy brass with intricate rhythms, while 'Spinning' layers folk-psych guitar and cinematic horns, creating a fluid dialogue between the musicians. 'Back And Better' highlights Nichola Richards' soulful vocals, adding depth to the sparse beats. The album also explores playful experimentation, with 'Sparks of Joy' embracing a swampy groove, and 'Phantom Power' introducing an electric phin, nodding to world jazz influences. Carlton Jumel Smith's performance on 'Can't Stop This Fire' and the gospel-tinged 'Homebound' anchor the album, grounding its expansive journey. The result is a cohesive and evolving soundione that truly captures the clearly audible joy of collaboration.

Review: German funk heroes The Mighty Mocambos continue to prove that their funk is an ever-evolving force, navigating between the worlds of gritty, organic soul and cinematic experimentation with unapologetic energy. Their latest offering marks another step forward, refining the groove-laden formula that's earned them global acclaim while pushing into new territory. The opening track hits hard with orchestral flair on 'Road to Earth,' where the legendary Peter Thomas's arrangements lay the foundation for a full-on sonic odyssey. As they move through the album, tracks like 'It's the Music' and 'Hot Stuff' groove like a classic, with Afrika Bambaataa's presence lifting the energy and ensuring a tight vibe. But it's not all about party anthems. 'Not Get Caught' from DeRobert tells a story that's as gritty as it is soulful, capturing a narrative of crime with a raw, undeniable swagger. Even more dynamic is the standout 'Catfight,' which melds mysterious Eastern flavours with a tripped-out break, displaying a versatility that refuses to be boxed in. This is an album of triumphs, not just in the power of individual tracks but in the overall cohesion of sound and spirit, and by taking a step further into uncharted waters while keeping their infectious funk roots firmly grounded, The Mighty Mocambos challenge expectations and push boundaries. A showcase of a band in full flight, steadily rising.

Love Me Or Leave Me (6:57)
Review: A striking album of the bop era that was highlighted by his undying conviction and ability to reclaim his status as a primary architect of the genre. The album is built around two exceptional groups: a sextet and a quintet, both anchored by Davis' blue-chip rhythm section of Horace Silver (piano), Percy Heath (bass) and Kenny Clarke (drums). The sextet features trombonist J.J. Johnson and tenor saxophonist Lucky Thompson, while the quintet adds Dave Schildkraut (alto sax), whose contributions, though lesser-known, are memorable. The title track, an extended 12-bar blues, shows Davis' ability to exude an air of detachment from the music, making it feel like an extension of his solo rather than the other way around. 'Blue 'n' Boogie', in contrast, is a lively, energetic tune where Davis and Johnson engage in spirited improvisation, with Johnson even quoting from Thelonious Monk's 'Rhythm-A-Ning'. 'Solar' introduces a delicate interplay, with Silver's piano solo displaying an Ellington-esque elegance. The album's final track, 'Love Me or Leave Me', foreshadows Davis' later breakthrough, with his swift and decisive trumpet solo hinting at the bold innovations to come. Walkin' stands as an essential bop-era classic, with Davis' brilliant command over his instruments and his bandmates, with pieces like 'Walkin'' and 'Solar' cementing its place as a foundational jazz work.

Review: Mark Millington's debut album showcases the UK saxophonist's dynamic, melody-driven jazz sounds across some well-formed new compositions. Energetic and percussive yet deeply lyrical, five original tracks range from the joyful exuberance of 'Matilda's Dance' to the tender emotion of 'Truth Be Told.' A standout reinterpretation of Becky Hill's 'Overdrive' adds a fresh twist to the mix and throughout this album, Millington is joined by a stellar ensemble including Addison Frei (piano), Jackson Potter (guitar), Yoshi Waki (bass) and Brian Karl (drums), with more guests also featuring and making this a memorable introduction to a promising new voice in jazz.

Review: Berlin-based artist Pavel Milyakov collaborates with Yana Pavlova, Martyna Basta, Richie Culver and Torus on Enthropic Vision, an album-length collection of tracks spanning diverse genres. The A-side starts with the melancholic ambience of 'Moon Chant', featuring the ethereal vocals of Krakow experimental music scene veteran Martyna Basta, before 'Tesco' brings bleak trancey loops blended with British contemporary artist Richie Culver's spoken word poetry. 'Eternal Break', with Netherlands-based artist Torus, is all low subs, ecstatic pads and abrasive breaks, then the B-side kicks in with 'Gabba 17' - not a 170bpm gabba anthem, but rather a ghostly techno workout with an admittedly urgent 4/4 kick - and continues with another tune featuring Richie Culver's spoken word fused with breaks. The album closes with the grim beauty of 'The Thrill', recorded in collaboration with Ukrainian singer Yana Pavlova and transports more wised up listeners back to the hypnagogic universe of the duo's 2021 Blue LP.

Review: Misha Panfilov's septet showcases his intricate harmonic palette in their second album, To The Mesosphere And Beyond. Filled with optimism, the album features airy, space-age voicings reminiscent of Terry Riley and Raymond Scott, all centered around jazz. The unique addition of a lap steel guitar, inspired by cosmic country music, adds fresh, innovative layers to the music. The album was created during an intense two-week period, with the band rehearsing and performing live in Tallinn and Stockholm, followed by a spontaneous two-day recording session. Despite challenges, the album was completed in just four days. The compositions are structured into four vignettes, transporting listeners beyond temporal and spatial boundaries. The album does well with blending psychedelic elements with jazz. Sasha's passionate saxophone and Ilja Gussarov's flute, paired with Volodja's synthesizer, create an enchanting soundscape due to their desire for exploration and innovation.

Review: Misha Panfilov, the Estonian contemporary jazz mover whose many Janus faces amount to more than just two, resulting in many album avatars - here shares a live recorded rendition of a recent pair of shows, played back to back in Stockholm, then Tallinn. The first recorded at Fasching, Stockholm, on August 16, 2023, and the second recorded at Paavli Kultuurivabrik, Tallinn, August 19, 2023, this live record is composed of pieces otherwise heard on Panfilov's earlier albums, and they're chopped and changed to an exclusive running order here. Every track herein brims with a moonwalking lackadaisy, with Panfilov's live sensibility shedding light on his odic borrowing of classic bop and modal, and lending them a lunar reverential twist.

Review: Blue Mitchell's Blue's Moods, originally released in 1960, is a hard bop gem featuring Mitchell's superb trumpet alongside Wynton Kelly on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Roy Brooks on drums. This rhythm section's chemistry is next level, particularly evident on the slow blues track 'Kinda Vague' with Brooks' intricate hi-hat work. The album's opener, 'I'll Close My Eyes,' stands out and has even served as a favorite ringtone. Side-1, in particular, offers a relaxed and smooth blend of tunes that embody the essence of hard bop. As part of the Original Jazz Classics Series, this reissue boasts 180-gram vinyl, AAA lacquers cut from the original master tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio, and is pressed at RTI. The OJC series, known for its dedication to preserving and reissuing influential jazz albums, continues its legacy with this release. Mitchell's work on Riverside is often considered superior to his Blue Note recordings, with Blue's Moods, Blue Soul, The Cupbearers, and Out Of The Blue being standout examples. This reissue ensures that new generations of jazz enthusiasts can experience the soulful brilliance of Blue Mitchell in pristine quality.

Review: By 1960, Georgia-born tenor saxophonist Mobley was at the height of his powers, crafting a trilogy of hard bop masterpiecesiSoul Station, Roll Call and Workout. Roll Call, the middle entry, finds Mobley leading an inspired quintet featuring the young and fiery Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, alongside the rock-solid Soul Station rhythm section of pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and the explosive Art Blakey on drums. The result is a hard bop stunner, bursting with energy, interplay and lyrical phrasing. This reissue opens with the dynamic title track, a minor-key powerhouse that jumps out of the speakers, pushing each musician to deliver their best. Mobley and Hubbard's chemistry is electrifying, their solos crackling with urgency. The swaggering 'My Groove Your Move' follows, built on a confident, swinging groove, while 'A Baptist Beat' channels the deep, soulful call-and-response tradition of the black church. A second take of the latter further showcases the group's enthusiasm and spontaneity. The album's only standard, 'The More I See You', is a sublime moment of restraint, with Hubbard's use of the harmon mute adding a delicate, smoky touch. Mobley's playing here epitomises his gift for melodic improvisationisubtle yet deeply expressive. His warm, bluesy tone and sophisticated phrasing made him one of the most lyrical saxophonists of his era. Even decades later, Roll Call remains a cornerstone of hard bop.

With the assistance of exceptional vocalists, Moby has crafted a collection of songs that are both deeply personal and universally resonant. The album's unique approach, allowing vocalists complete artistic freedom, has resulted in a tapestry of sonic genius. From serpentwithfeet's ethereal dreamlike vocals to Benjamin's poignant poetry, each track exudes a sense of vulnerability and emotional depth. Review: Recorded in the early hours of Good Friday 1960, Good Friday Blues captures the spontaneous brilliance of The Modest Jazz Trio, led by Jim Hall on guitar, Red Mitchell on piano and Red Kelly on bass. Originally intended to record a single track for a blues anthology, the session evolved into a full album as the trio's effortless chemistry and musical inspiration turned the night into a memorable session. The resulting six tracks include Mitchell's originals and interpretations of standards like 'Willow Weep For Me' and 'I Remember You.' The absence of drums highlights Hall's delicate guitar tones and Mitchell's surprising piano talents, with Kelly's bass providing a solid foundation. One of the more underrated jazz albums for the time, this reissue should help catapult it to the level of attention it deserves.

Review: The Modulations released their album It's Rough Out Here in 1975, not only impressing both industry and laity with the singles 'Rough Out Here and 'I Can't Fight Your Love', but also spurring the considerable career of a funk quartet whose merit outdoes their reputation alone. The Modulations recorded extensively with MFSB, the house band of the famed record label Philadelphia International; these sessions yielded this album, one considered a gem of 1970s soul music. Exemplary of the long, wistful titles of the Philly funk era and beyond, the titular roughness of the record is also nonetheless embedded in a sea of audible Romance; the Modulations' hard knocks don't exclude the necessity of letting emotion in, with 'Head On Collision With Heartbreak' being an indelible example of this sense of being swept up in one's own emotions in the face of heartbreak, away from the perseverance aesthetics of "gritty" realism one might expect from a title like this.

Review: You Never End, the third album from Moin (Valentina Magaletti, Tom Halstead, and Joe Andrews), released via AD 93, marks a new chapter for the band. The album features vocal contributions from Olan Monk, james K, Coby Sey, and Sophia Al-Maria, each bringing their distinct, enigmatic voices into Moin's evolving sound. The collaborators add layers of allure and depth: james K's ethereal, reverb-heavy vocals, Coby Sey's rhythmic reflections of London's urban landscape, and Olan Monk's emotionally charged songwriting. Sophia Al-Maria's contributions reflect her multidisciplinary artistry, seamlessly blending into Moin's sonic universe while expanding its possibilities. Moin continues to challenge the conventional band structure, using a mix of traditional and innovative production techniques. You Never End subtly redefines the boundaries of grunge, shoegaze, and indie rock, imbuing them with a melancholic yet comforting tone. The vocal collaborations bring clarity and emotion, maintaining Moin's signature sound while enhancing it with electronic elements. The result is an album that feels both familiar and refreshingly new, resonating with textural richness and emotional depth.

Review: Hard Top brings together a long-overdue collection of 1975 recordings by South African alto saxophonist Kippie Moeketsi, released here under the 1970s spelling Moketsi. Issued by As-Shams/The Sun in a gatefold double vinyl edition, the record arrives in the wake of Tete Mbambisa's African Day and marks the centenary of Moeketsi's birth. Known for his foundational role in the Jazz Epistles and his deep imprint on the evolution of South African jazz, Moeketsi remained a devoted interpreter of classic American jazz traditions even as he embraced the funk-infused direction of the 70s. Flanked by standout sidemen Sipho Gumede, Dennis Mpale, and Pat Matshikiza, the album is a clement covers set, revisiting many an r&b standard, from 70s soul and pop to contemporary township grooves. Lovingly compiled and produced by Calum MacNaughton from sessions originally overseen by the late Rashid Vally, here hear: a vital artistic dossier of a musician whose influence resonates well beyond his lifetime.

Review: Belarusian post-punk and synth-pop group Molchat Doma have always reflected a brutalist aesthetic in their music which has been marked by cold, grey, and industrial tones. Following their 2020 breakthrough, the trio faced significant changes from leaving Minsk to headlining global shows. Settling in Los Angeles, they crafted their fourth album, Belaya Polosa, which symbolises transformation during tough times and celebrates the digital pulse of the 90s. The album combines sombre dance floor anthems with vibrant reinventions and tracks like 'Ty Zhe Ne Znaesh' Kto Ya,' 'Son,' and 'Belaya Polosa' showcase how they have moved their sound along to blend post-punk, synth textures, and melodic sophistication while maintaining their distinctive minimalist style.

Review: Wedged between the high points of Brilliant Corners and Monk's Music, Thelonious Monk's fourth Riverside outing marks a quieter yet pivotal chapter in his discog. Recorded in 1957, a transformative year for Monk, it hears the pianist almost entirely alone at the keyboard, chancing a rare but studious view into his inner compositional world. This session packs a deeply felt solo reading of ''Round Midnight', one of his most enduring pieces, not to mention the cloistered but still group-recorded cut 'Monk's Mood'; the latter track holds special historic significance, as it marks the first recorded appearance of John Coltrane with Monk, alongside unbeaten bassist Wilbur Ware. Though less boisterous than its neighbouring releases, this session reveals Monk in the away-with midsts of a rare creative "zone": distilled, raw, and searching.
