Disco/Reediciones
(Livin' In) New York City (3:26)
Moodies Basement (4:19)
Review: Masterminded by Jeff Dynamite Silverman, 10th Street is an all-star studio band comprised of some of NYC's best disco, funk and soul musicians of the last two decades (including members of Antibalas, the Dap-Kings, The Expressions and El Michels Affair). The collective's self-titled debut album, which dropped earlier this year, is a genuine must-listen and offers a near perfect distillation of disco, soul and funk flavours of the 1970s. This 7" single sports two of that set's standout cuts: hazy, mid-tempo, laidback disco-funk number 'Livin' In New York City', where Blaxploitation guitar licks, spacey synths, sustained organ chords and eyes-closed female vocals catch the ear, and the weightier, more percussive and undeniably dancefloor-friendly instrumental 'Moodie's Basement'. In a word: essential!

EARL's Theme (4:00)
Review: 10th Street is one of those devotional funk projects which sounds like it would wholly pass for the real deal, despite being made in recent times by a crack team of NYC musicians from bands including El Michels Affair, Lee Fields & The Expressions, The Dap-Kings and Antibalas. Following Mighty Eye's release of the group's self-titled debut album in 2022 comes this single, which tasks Tom Noble with whipping up a remix of 'E.A.R.L.'s Theme'. Whether you plump for the juiced up Noble remix or the sizzling groove of the original, you have the chance to cop some genuine dancefloor dynamite right here.

Review: Every once in a while, a release is slung our way that charms us so deeply that we're not sure what angle approach it from. Deliberately retro, but with one foot in the cosmic, Star Creature are a Chicago-based label whose take on space disco is extra janky and electronic. AVOP's new track 'Purple' is rattlesnaking and sultry, delving into a pitch-perfect rumination of a disco sound that 70's producers could only dream of achieving. Coming to purple 7" vinyl, the track makes "Russian violet cyber grapes rain in Chicago", as asserted by the artist.

Afro Darkness (PAd remix) (7:53)
Afro Discoteca (Jolly Mare Lifting) (5:44)
Afro Darkness (LUCA Quirky version) (6:03)
Review: Back in 2017, Four Flies Records unearthed and released a previously unheard "Afro-cosmic funk" EP from Italian soundtrack and library music legend Alessandro Alessandroni. Three years on, they've decided to give the 1978 recording the remix treatment. Bolissa and guests Calibra 35 kick things off with a densely percussive, out-of-this-world take on "Afro-Voodoo", before Pad re-imagines "Afro Darkness" as a chugging chunk of beatdown-disco laden with colossal chords, arpeggio bass and intergalactic electronics. Over on side B the "Jolly Mare Lifting" version of "Afro Discoteca" is a veritable leftfield disco stomper notable for its low-slung bass and spacey Moog lines, while Luca's "Quirky Version" of "Afro Darkness" is the kind of hallucinogenic, Marimba-tinged number that you can imagine Daniele Baldelli playing at the Cosmic Club circa 1981.

Different Kind Of Life (Massimiliano Pagliara remix) (8:09)
Different Kind Of Life (Massimiliano Pagliara dub) (6:23)
Different Kind Of Life (ASHRR Soundsystem version) (6:34)
Review: The LA-based ASHRR outfit is back with more of their superbly warm and soul-infused sounds here with 'Different Kind of Life'. Their own ASHRR Soundsystem version of the original is a gloriously upbeat and funky bit of space disco with lavish synth lines and chugging drums that lock you in. Berlin electronic mainstay Massimiliano Pagliara, who has landed on the likes of Ostgut Ton, Cocktail d'Amore and more, then brings his own two remixes. The first has some nice indie vocals and dazzling chord work, while the second is a deep dub that pairs things back. All three of these are swaggering and uplifting disco cuts with a difference.

Sambuca (2:05)
Review: Roman producer Gaetano 'Gaeimago' Ciciriello aka Azzurro 80 debuted on Four Flies in 2021 and is already a firm favourite whose first EP was so successful it quickly got re-pressed. Now he is back with more lush sounds inspired by the 80s Italian library scene and informed by his love of a faded blue colour from which he takes his name. 'Notte Inchiesta' is a jazzy cosmic wonder with gentle Mediterranean grooves and laid-back cool, then 'Equilibrio' carries on the trip but once the sun has set with bubbling house drums and tumbling synth colours. 'Sambuca' shuts down with grand strings making for a sentimental and cinematic ambient sound.

Review: Big sleazy keys, bare-hipped guitars, sultry drums and twisted faraway vocal textures comprise this debut EP for Cali trio Basil & Rogers. Coming on strong like some long-lost offspring of Chromeo and Fly-Lo, each cut is a fuzzy fusion of 80s funk, modern day studio techniques and 23rd century arrangements. Highlights include the 360 dizziness of hooks and eventual saxophone release of "Saturday Morning", the heavy breath disco stomps of "Flavie & The Wolf" and the dubbier ripples of "Mirror Mirror". Sweaty stuff... Towels not included.

Review: Italian disco don and funk flexer Belabouche has landed on the likes of DiscoDat, Spare Change Disco and Gimme! Gimme. His edits and remixes are always in hot demand but here he offers up four original jams that show off his studio skills on the JDP Disco label. Flautist George alla Dispari features on 'Brooklyn', the full flavour funk fuelled opener that bustles with joy and good time vibes. 'I Gonna Miss You' is a more spaced out disco cut from the deep and 'Ikeja' then pumps the floor with squelchy bass and astral chords. 'Country Headquarters' lows to a seductive crawl to close things out.

Review: House of Disco throw open their doors to Boots & Kats for a jolly good time across three originals and a remix from German house artist Johannes Albert. His version of 'Party Talk' sure is a fine one, with colourful arps and pixelated leads all vying for your attention of driving drums. 'Seratona' is a retro-future disco stomper to open with and 'Park Talk' is a manic disco-house workout that will leave you breathless. 'Gorlami' is a glistening melodic explosion that surges through the cosmos on a wave of positivity. These are the sort of good time grooves that we all need right now.

Review: Gone beyond. That's what they say when an (astro) pilot crashes to earth and takes the journey into the big sky. When Juan Trippe took that last flight little did he know that his re-incarnated self would be an electronic pioneer. In tandem with his co-pilot Guido Zen (his own father also a pilot) and Kyle Martin (from the Land Of Light) they formed Brain Machine and scaled the highest Peaks to bring back music both unearthly and intensely human. Are we all not stardust anyway? This music proves it, takes you out flips you over and rolls you in stardust. Don't try and think it through, make sense of it, grasp it - just wander in wonder and bask in beauty.
Get lost again.

Rune Lindbaek - "Ratsastic Empress" (4:50)
Khidja - "Chuncho" (11:08)
Review: The sixth helping from Duca Bianco is a big disco offering that kicks off with a first track from Casinoboy in a decade. His 'On My Mind' is a corrugated jam with knotted bass and deadpan 80s vocals then some a secret unknown weapon that layers angular, slapping drums with rave sirens and a dark disco beat. Contemporary disco legend Rune Lindbaek then comes good with a sci-fi trip and gauzy synth lines of 'Ratsastic Empress.' Last of all, Khidja rounds out on 'Chuncho', a smooth groove with far-sighted pads that get you in the zone. Pressed on nice heavy 140g wax, this is another tidy 12" from Duca Bianco.

Review: 'Photochrome' is a track that is shrouded in mystery. It has a rather elusive original release date, likely sometime between the late 1970s and early 1980s, and came on Italy's Idea which was a well-regarded label despite its small catalogue. Now reissued in full, the single exudes an organic aesthetic infused with early electronic elements that were emerging during that era. A brisk, pulsating groove is intertwined with what resembles an early 303 bassline and ethereal vocal. Dry drum recordings evoke a raw, DIY ambience next to the experimental effects that swirl and drift. A new two-part bonus beats remix is also included.

Review: Cheeky Chops delivers another dose of disco delight with their latest 12" release. On the Side-1, they pay tribute to Madonna's 'Borderline' with an electrifying 11-minute edit that transports listeners to the heyday of New York City's 80s clubs. This more electronic rendition captures the essence of the era with hand-raising ecstasy and a distinct A.M. vibe. Flipping over to the Side-2, Cheeky Chops treats us to an extended version of Bananarama's 'Cruel Summer,' perfect for those long summer breaks we've all been yearning for.

Atmosphere Strut (12" club mix) (9:21)
Atmosphere Strut (Kon's Fly Away edit) (8:38)
Review: Patrick Adams was responsible for producing tons of terrific disco records during the late 1970s and early '80s, but few are quite as dizzyingly good as Cloud One's 1976 cut 'Atmosphere Strut'. Created by Adams with the assistance of regular collaborator Peter Brown, the 9-minute plus track is notable for the extensive use of superbly spacey synthesizer lines, an infectious deep disco groove and a typically head-in-the-clouds lead vocal from Margo Williams. This reissue naturally offers-up Adams' original, must-have 12" club mix, but also a brand-new re-edit from disco rework specialist KON. He lengthens the intro, beefs up the bass and makes crafty use of some improvised vocals from Adams and Williams that were previously buried on the multi-track master tapes.

This project was of course masterminded by the legendary Patrick Adams and Peter Brown back in the 70s and they had plenty of catchy tunes with genius sound designs. 'Disco Juice' is one and kicks off here with soaring strings and super smooth disco grooves topped with effortless vocal coos and lush licks. On the flip is the lively 'Charleston Hopscotch' with big chord stabs and astral synths reaching up to the skies next to jazzy piano breakdowns.

This duo hails from Miami and focuses on space disco sounds that fans of the famous Metro Area style are sure to love. They remain mysterious themselves but their beats are brilliantly designed with plenty of retro-future pads, cosmic arps and tight basslines full of colour, texture and soul. Like Daft Punk but deeper and more dubbed out. All four of these cuts are sure to get floors going but also bring plenty of style.

Review: Having previously produced two tidy remixes of overlooked Patrick Cowley gem 'Get a Little', Alan Dixon has returned to the late, great producer's catalogue in order to rework another lesser-celebrated cut. This time round, he's turned his hand to Megatron Man album track, 'Lift Off', a typically throbbing, muscular vocal number that sits somewhere between thrusting robo-disco, sparkling electrofunk and synth-pop. Dixon first adds a little low-end grunt on the re-edit style 'Love Attack Mix', before delivering a sturdier and easier-to-mix 'DJ Friendly version'. On the flip you'll find Cowley's original and a rare, club-ready remix from the early '80s.

They have cooked up a selection of versions of 'Rosso Carnale' which, we understand, lyrically touches on the colour red and the gentle carnal forces of nature sung in Italian. There is a sped-up version from Bottin, a sparse mix from Deux Control and standout Mutant version with tougher drums but nice silky dub chords and a bright Italo version full of 80s synth nostalgia.

Now it is Afro and disco grooves that power this EP, with more of those majestic chords. They have a retro feel here - with tinniness and old-school futurism embraced over elastic and acrobatic beats and bass. 'Watch Out' is a party starter to kick off then there are more lazy and sleazy jams like 'Nowhere' and there twisted electronics of 'Voodoo' bring plenty of invention and a variety of vivacious sounds to this EP.

His modern take on dance floor disco usually blurs the lines between classic boogie funk, afro and Italo but this one is more a an early house affair. Just like on the spaced-out late night jam 'Analog Session', while the first wave sounds of The Windy City are channeled on the emotive 'Fashion Tape' on side A. Flip over and get your head down into the groove on the acid jack of 'Out Of Control, followed by one more authentic sounding proto-house groove on closing cut 'Moblast'. Tip!

Review: Back in 2023, Parisian jazz-funk-meets-disco outfit Chatobaron partnered with 21st century disco icon Dimitri From Paris on the superb 'Chez Madame La Baronne'. At the time, the Idjut Boys were called in to remix it, but only one of their suite of takes was released. Hence this killer four-tracker on their own Bite The Day label. It's typical of the long-serving duo's wild, wonderful and frequently deliciously dubbed-out work. While the opening 'Le Fouet version' is a rolling, spacey, sun-splashed and only lightly dubby dancefloor excursion, the mix which follows - the 'Grosse Bite version' - is a wonderfully trippy, percussion-rich drum dub smothered in tape delay and space echo; in other words, a classic Idjuts interpretation. Over on the reverse, the 'Sac Plain' version is a proper Idjuts dub that flits between spacey drop-outs and extended groove sections, while the closing 'Sac Vide version' is a sunrise-ready ambient delight.

Review: Earlier this year, French disco and jazz-funk combo Chatobaron joined forces with fellow Parisian Dimitri From Paris for the rather good 'I Like (The Music That You Play)'. While that was a wholehearted disco workout, this speedy sequel sees the band (and their high-profile collaborator) explore their West Coast jazz-funk influences via an inspired workout full to bursting with killer instrumental solos, dusty grooves, memorable motifs and a genuinely killer, cowbell-sporting percussion brerak. This time round, there are no Dimitri From Paris remixes; instead, dubbed-out disco favourites the Idjut Boys are on hand to smother the track in tape echo and dub delay. The result is a typically spaced-out, low-slung affair that naturally makes the most of the band's killer bassline and layered percussion sounds.

Up first is the glorious 'Solid Street' which has loose and percussive disco-house grooves overlaid with big synth energy and steamy vocals. 'Solar System' is slower and deeper, with a more rugged bassline and low slung sense of funk that never lets up. 'Last of all, 'Rose Tree' is a ramshackle house arrangement with whistles, Rhodes keys, tin-pot percussion, florid flutes and plenty of sunny energy all making it a real standout. It is a four-track EP that shows off the producer's well-realised sounds. The title track is the real standout - 'Retropolis' brings electro-styled synth work with brilliantly future retro euro-disco energy. It's packed with hints of Italo and is sure to light up any club scene. Says the producer of the EP, "Retropolis is the past meets the future. I love influences and technology from the past and making music that sounds like it could be from a time yet to arrive." Mission accomplished.

Review: Last year, Marcel Vogel dusted down his Em Vee edit alias for the first time in three years, serving up a tasty four-pack of reworks for OYE's ongoing Edits series. It clearly inspired him to make more reworks, because now he's popped up on Razor-N-Tape with another fine selection of scalpel revisions. He begins by reworking a tongue-in-cheek chunk of disco silliness rich in spacey Moog lines and wonky vocals ("You Move Me"), before tweaking and rearranging a superb chunk of Latin-tinged tropical disco ("Spreading Energy"). "Don't Be Sabi Say" is a high-tempo chunk of Afrobeat/Afro-disco fusion full of ear-catching Nigerian vocals and bustling electric piano riffs, while "I Wish I Knew The Words" is a cheeky revision of an obscure Japanese synth-boogie number.

To get us all in the Mood, Leng have served up this EP of dubs and remixes. In the latter category you'll find a superb, piano solo-laden proto-house rework of 'Devoilez-Vous' by fellow Stafford act T Kutt, and a typically warm, languid Balearic disco interpretation of 'Island Boogie' by Leng co-founder Mudd. Meecham delivers two wonderfully skeletal, wayward and trippy instrumental dubs, lightly transforming 'Devoilez-Vous' and 'La Cassette' in turn. In a word: essential.

Review: There's scant information to be found online about the producer (or producers) behind the Fake Love project. So what's on offer? Well, the A-side is a sleazy, tongue-in-cheek affair. It appears to be a re-edit of an obscure European disco tune that wraps breathy vocals, spacey electronics and raw Italo-disco touches around a Moroder style bassline eerily reminiscent of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love". It's curious and eccentric, but also really rather good. Turn to the flipside for more sci-fi, Euro-disco action, where fizzing, stargazing synthesizer motifs and bustling drum fills ride another heavy arpeggio-style groove. Muscular and leather-bound, it sounds like the sort of obscurity you'd hear at Cocktail D'Amore's legendary Berlin parties.

Review: A modern lunar take on jazz and disco, Jazz On The Moon hears Italian producer Paolo Fedreghini moonwalk backwards through live horns, bass, synth and guitar for a crisply produced six-track EP. Opening with original NASA-issue intercom vocals from the 1968 moon landing, 'Interstellar' crafts a moonscape of Harmon-muted trumpet and avant-garde growls, while expansive electro-funk opens out on the title track and 'Distant Planet', by which point a tonal shift is underway. The vibe is increasingly P-funky, erring desolate on the interluding 'Outer Space', before we wind up purblinded by the light side of the mood on closers 'Groove Odyssey' and 'Cosmic Funk'.

Review: FAR aka Simon and Robin Lee's Faze Action Records serve up a special 7" featuring Faze Action's 'Fantasy' which sounds very much like a tune you might unearth in some dusty old crate that hasn't been heard since the 70s and 80s. It has lush synths reaching up to the stars and gentle disco beats that sweep you off your feet. The bustling arrangement bubbles with subtle energy and gorgeous vocals are layered in for extra escapist magic. On the flip is an instrumental that is pared back and more direct, but both tunes really do take you into a fantasy world.

Review: Newcastle's Hot Biscuit Recordings pull the strings behind many a white label sub-imprint, one of which is the elusive Funtown Records. The orchestrator of this edits series is obscure, and so are the sample sources for each of the edits heard on this 12". On the A-side, we hear a tight-lipped James Brown-style breakdown and ensuing boogie number, on which it is insisted that we "know what makes (this singer) feel alright". Good to know! The B-side, meanwhile, errs far further in the direction of instrumental synthfunk, proving the versatile mettle of this raucous reworker.

Galaxians - "Hustle Never Ends" (9:09)

Sky Tony - "Tell Me" (5:41)
Review: The Royal Athlete label keeps on running with the sixth volume of its self-titled series. It is a collection, once again, of joyous analogue disco that pays homage to classic sounds but not slavishly so. Kicking things off are the mighty galaxies, absolute kings of this form with plenty of cosmic synths and retro-future synth work. Paul Withey slips into a deeper, more seductive disco-soul sound with 'Confessions' primed and ready for some smoochy dancing, then First Touch's 'I Believe In Boogie' does what it says on the tin. Sky Tony slows things down with the glossy and astral arps of 'Tell Me', making this a superb collection of disco gold.

Monsieur Van Pratt - "UFO" (6:29)
Souldynamic - "Better" (6:26)
De Gama - "Groove On" (7:21)
Review: Italian label Samosa continues to deliver re-edits with "Funk Purpose". Volume three is every bit as strong as its predecessors, with a quartet of experienced re-editors offering up fresh reworks. Get Down Edits set the tone with "Comin' At Ya", a riotously beefy, tooled-up house revision of an urgent funk-soul gem, before Monsieur Van Pratt gleefully dances into disco-funk territory via the spacey synths, groovy bass guitar, crunchy Clavinet licks and fluttering flute solos of "UFO". Over on side B Souldynamic provides some rubbery disco bounce via "Better", while De Gama goes all samba-house with the cowbell-propelled South American style Hammond funk of "Groove On".

Review: DJ and producer Gratts returns to his own imprint with the third instalment of the "Balearic but bumpin'" trilogy. Here, the Belgian puts forward a captivating piece of organic, Body & Soul NY inspired deep house, assisted by Cata Mansikka-aho on vocals. As always, an instrumental is provided for maximum nightclub daydreaming. On the flipside, British duo Faze Action up the energy levels with an equally musical disco version that hits in all the right spots. Artwork once again by Mads Cooke.

Review: Chicagoan crate digger, DJ and producer Mark Grusane has long been regarded as one of the best re-editors in the business, with a long list of labels queuing up to put out his tried and tested reworks. Here be unveils a new project, The Tape Edits, in which he rearranges and revitalised cuts the old fashioned way - IE via the use of reel-to-reel tape, a scalpel and some sticky tape. There's plenty to admire across the six tracks stretched across two slabs of wax, from the high-tempo jazz-fusion-goes-disco hedonism of 'I Can't Come Down' and the killer-grooves-and-analogue synths flex of 'The Fever', to the low-slung disco-funk heaviness of 'Stomp The Floor' and the spacey disco-funk brilliance of closing cut 'Giving Nothing'.

Disco Dreams & The Androids - "Dream Machine" (9:08)
Craig Peyton - "Be Thankful" (7:15)
116 BPM Trax (4:32)
Review: In some ways, it's amazing that the illicit RDY label is still finding unreleased, overlooked, or little-known Ron Hardy edits and productions to fill their vinyl-only series. This is their 25th release in six years, and they show no signs of calling it quits. All three tracks here are on a stretched-out, dubbed-out electronic disco tip, beginning with what appears to be Hardy's reel-to-reel extension of Disco Dream & The Androids' quirky 1979, Moroder-ish arpeggio-jam "Dream Machine". Flip for an all-instrumental dub take on Craig Peyton's decidedly wonky, electro-disco cover of "Be Thankful For What You've Got" and "116 BPM Trax", an un-credited, boogie-era, proto-house jam full of bubbling electronics, cheeky synthesizer riffs and clanking drum machine hits.

Review: The legendary Razor-N-Tape keeps up its always busy release schedule here with a debut offering from Hiatt dB. The San Antonio born artist offers up a sizzling six track mini album that joins the dots between the worlds of funk, house, acid, breaks, disco and boogie. It's a steamy affair, too, with 'When The Night Is Right' soon making its mark and luring you to make some sensuous moves. There is loose limbed funk on the title track, spaced out boogie beats on 'First On The Floor' and low slung slow motion house sleaze on 'Take The Low Roads Home' amongst other gems.

Review: Bordello A Parigi outta Holland is back with another volume in its Diamond In The Night series. As always this is a stargazing collection of expansive future disco. Hyboid's 'Italians & Spacemen' opens up with lush arps and big chords reaching for the heavens. Discobeton then explores a more rueful mood with 'Discobeton 1' and its crystalline chords before the deadly duo of Daniel Monaco & Futuristant layer up machine gun synths and perfect 80s crashing drums into something that will detonate the dance floor. Things close on an intense note with Captain Mustache's 'Red Light Disco.'

Review: Jambonne is the studio alias of Another Taste, and here he returns to Space Grapes with a double A-side scorcher following the underground buzz of 'Carpet Ride.' This new 45rpm delivers two no-nonsense disco-funk jams primed for peak-time play an packed with infectious grooves, tight rhythm sections and vintage production that ensures both of them are instant dancefloor essentials. There's no filler here, just pure, unfiltered funk energy which means that fans of Space Grapes' analogue aesthetic will have plenty to enjoy while newcomers will quickly understand the hype. This is raw, modern boogie at its best.
