Whatcha Trying To Do (To Me)?
Tell Me, Tell Me!
Review: Russian funk alert! Following in the footsteps of fellow country funkers STiX and The Soul Surfers, DJ Anatoly Ice and veteran songstress Dariya deliver two impeccable jams that sizzle with a fuzzy air of 60s nostalgia. Dariya's vocal delivery is crisp, clear and decidedly sexy as she dips into her mother tongue for very brief respites. With punctuated pianos, big swinging drums and a horn ensemble that's tighter than an austerity budget, this is an exemplary lesson in funk.

Freedom (Mr. Confuse remix) (3:42)
Review: It's been almost four years since we last heard from Anatoly Ice and Dariya, and we were beginning to miss the duo's magnetic waves of seductive nu-soul. Backed by a gentle sway of breakbeats, "Freedom (Unchained)" is the sort of tune that will have cross-cultural appeal, drawing in influences from pop, r&b, and even a little country love. On the flip, Mr Confuse twists the groove up to transform the original into more of a light-hearted house swelter, backed by the original's suave vocals.

The M&Ms & The Peanuts - "Lil Valley" (2:55)
Delilah Moor - "I'll Just Walk Away" (2:11)
Review: Kent Soul pays tribute to the seminal LA soul imprint Money with four of its most characteristic cuts. "The Man That Said No" was a follow up to Bettye's breakthrough smash "Don't Wait Too Long". The limited success at the time has driven recent sales high, making this 45" appeal to collectors instantly. Dig deeper for Bobby's super-slamming R&B jam "I'll Be A Soldier Boy". Its debut vinyl appearance, this nods effectively at the northern soul anthem "Too Much For You". Further on we experience doo-wop delight with The M&Ms & The Peanuts' debut single "Lil Valley" before fast-forwarding to the early 70s with the lavish soul of Moore's "I'll Just Walk Away". Money talks.... You'd be wise to listen.

Review: Expansion's offshoot label is back with a second release and for the occasion have put together a special eco vinyl 10" here that is strictly limited to just 100 copies and is fully deserving of that treatment: Tom Browne Feat. Carol Woods combined to great effect in the 80s on this soul classic that now gets a first-ever single release. It's the sort of immediately heartwarming tune that draws from soul, jazz funk, disco and more to cook up a steamy and excellent groove. On the flip is Diplomats Of Soul with their own super cover of 'Brighter Tomorrow' featuring Brit funk and acid jazz greats Incognito & Imaani.

Review: Cash Money Experience are soul dons and if you need proof listen no further than this new 7". Darryl Howard is the vocalist and songwriter of Nu'rons and here he offers up the lead vocals while Emanuel Campbell, who is one of his co-members in Nu'rons, is responsible for the lyrics. On the extended version of 'Outside Looking In' the vocals convey plenty of pain on nice laidback drums and funky riffs. The Full Radio Edit distils things to a shorter play length but is just as effective.

Review: After the March drop of this record caused quite the stir, the label is now back with a limited edition white vinyl version to make it all the more vital an addition to your shelves. Cool Million is a Danish and German duo and their track 'Stronger' is the track and the title of their sixth full-length album from 2019. It is a positive and upbeat anthem that is sure to reign in the innocent bystanders to party. The Dub is a super-cool alternative version that reminds of us classic roller-skating funk track from Midnight Star or Kool & The Gang. A classy party starter, for sure.

Andy Cooper - "Why You Buggin'" (feat The Allergies) (3:14)
Dr Syntax/Pete Cannon - "Downtime" (The Allergies remix) (3:27)
Review: More all-action fare from the popular Bomb Strikes label, an imprint that has gradually moved away from the party-hearty mash-ups and bootleg remixes on which it made its name. This tidy seven-inch single is notable for the presence of Bristol crew The Allergies. On the A-side they guest on Andy Cooper's "Why You Buggin", a bustling, funk-fuelled fusion of hip-hop and rock that sounds like a wholehearted tribute to the Beastie Boys circa "Licensed To Ill". Over on the flip the West Country party-starters turn remixers, delivering a head nodding, toe-tapping take on Dr Syntax and Pete Canon's hip-hop/funk/ska fusion number "Downtime". Like the A-side, it sounds like a bona fide dancefloor bomb.

Review: Hit makes of the 20th and 21st Century don't come much bigger or more accomplished than French electronic innovators Daft Punk and irresistible hook-writing machine Pharrell Williams. When they got together to make music it was always going to give rise to monster hits and so it proved. Whoever you are, 'Get Lucky' cannot fail to get you singing along and swinging those hips. The Chic-style bass riffs, the smooth and catchy vocal from Williams and the effortless groove are all timeless. That one is backed with 'Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger' another Daft Punk classic from their earlier period but that is no less potent today.

Somebody Help Me (2:31)
Review: Athens of the North founder Euan Fryer has described Willie Dale's "Let Your Light Shine" as "one of the best discoveries in the last 15 years". Only five copies of the original 7" single have surfaced to date, with the most recent changing hands for eye-watering sums of money. You can see why Fryer was so excited by "Let Your Light Shine": while rooted in both funk and soul, the track also draws heavily on psychedelic rock and the fuzzy, funk-rock fusion brilliance of Sly Stone. Original B-side "Somebody Help Me" is an altogether more laidback affair, with Dale offering impassioned and melancholic lyrics over a psychedelic era take on old rhythm & blues ballads.

In a nod to his cache and love of classic deep house, Riddick has coaxed a Mr Fingers remix out of Larry Heard resulting in a sublime take on "Believer" that would have gone down a treat at Broken Beat haven Co-Op back in the day. They are a talented group of musicians who have a big love of mod jazz, black music roots and Italian soundtracks and library music classics from the 50s through to the 80s and all of that influences this new EP, Phuture Soul. Recorded and mixed at Solid Twin Studio between May 2021 and January 2022, it kick off with the title track which pairs rock guitars with funky basslines. Review: With the passing of William Daron Pulliam last year, the music world truly lost a singular and unique talent. Here Californian soul daddies Ubiquity pay homage to his most recognised works "Didn't I See" with a limited edit-focused 12". There is of course the feeling one shouldn't mess with perfection - and this Darondo track certainly falls into that category - but each of the three edits that accompany the original are considered reworks that subtly add some extra character without losing any of its power to move. Kinjo Music founder Dave Allison perhaps excels the most in this regard, subtly nudging the tempo up and adding some extra percussive detail that soul selectors will appreciate.

It has previously been released on a 7" entitled 'Edits' by Stefan Trischler aka Trishes back in 2010 but with a different B-side. Here it comes on TLM with a 1773 remix on the flip. The original is a hard-ass funk cut with raw and tough drums and splintered hi-hats all topped off with the aching and soulful vocal sample and some distant lavish strings. Review: Rock A Shaka is hella busy right now and continues to drop mad heat on a very busy schedule. It is now Dave & Earnest who step up with their unique take on reggae. This one is coloured by disco and boogie with dazzling results. 'Moving On' has big horns over soul-stepping beats and retro 80s drum sounds. The vocals drip with sexiness and a killer bassline finishes in style. The version dials it back to a fleshy dub with the tooting horns left in to get your juices going.

This one marks Davey H's (aka David Humphrey) debut release for Six Nine Records and surely there will be many more after it because 'Keep Movin'' is a gem. Review: Over the last five years, few contemporary soul artists have more successfully blurred the boundaries between '60s soul, vintage funk and gospel than Michelle David and regular backing band Gospel Sessions (a studio outfit helmed by her producers and collaborators Onno Smit and Paul Williamson. 'Yes I Am', David's first single of 2021, continues where her previous work left off. It sees her delivering a soulful, super-sweet lead vocal atop a wonderfully retro-sounding soul backing track that reminded us of the similarly inclined work of Durand Jones & The Indications and Timmion Records stalwarts Cold Diamond & Mink. The A-side full vocal take is our pick of the pair, though the accompanying instrumental is also predictably good.

Review: Michelle David's first UK single 'Yes I Am' was a huge soul hit for the One World Records label back in January. Now she follows it up with another superb single that is so good they named it thrice. 'Good Good Good' is a high speed soul banger with Northern Soul elegance swirling around a tight rhythm section and 60s motifs. The vocal is skill controlled despite the heights it reaches and speed it comes at. Craig Charles has already been dropping this one, and for those who prefer it more straight up, the flip side has an instrumental version.

Review: These two unreleased tracks from Geater Davis deliver raw, hard-hitting Southern soul with his some nice gritty vocals, sharp guitar work and powerful horns all making them perfect for anyone who loves a bit of blues-tinged soul. Geater was born Vernon Davis in East Texas in 1946 and learned guitar from T-Bone Walker before then working as a sideman and breaking through with 'Sweet Woman's Love' in 1970. He charted again in 1972 with' Your Heart Is So Cold' on Seventy 7 Records, and though disco's rise curtailed touring opportunities, he kept performing across the South. Sadly, just as he was preparing for a comeback, he died of heart failure at age 38, but these gems remain.

This 7" single was written by the man himself and is one of his many majestic cuts from a career that started in the late 60s and found him recording for the next 30 odd years. An original will be hard to find and probably too costly if you do so grab this limited edition 7" and prepare to get smoochy as soon as you drop the needle on the record.

Sam Dees - "Child Of The Streets 2015" (5:10)
Barbara Acklin - "Am I The Same Girl 2015" (4:49)
Review: The Cosmologist's Under The Influence series returns with a soul 7" especially for RSD! "Child Of The Street" by Sam Dees originates from 1973 and comes dripping with socio-political undertones, which remain intact on The Cosmologist's 2015 tweak which subtly embellishes the groove into something close to a hip hop beat. Face down and we go back a decade to 1968 and the outright soul gem "Same Girl" by Barbara Acklin, twisting it up with the lesser known piano version from Young Holt Unlimited for 5 minutes that will nice up any dance!

Listen To Me (Backing track) (2:33)
Review: 'Listen To Me Girl' is a previously unreleased Philadelphia recording licensed from veteran producer Emanuel Manny Campbell Jr. Although featured on a Coastal Records CD project, this marks the first vinyl release of one of The Delights' best tunes. The group consisted of four young male singers, two of whom were Manny's cousins, Keith and Ellis Hill, along with their cousin Jaime and teenage friend, and all were all aged 16-17 and from Chester, Pennsylvania. Under Manny's guidance, they recorded this soulful dancer in 1968. Despite their potential, the group never completed the planned projects and so 'Listen To Me Girl' remains a rare gem from their short-lived career.

Review: The Delights were somewhat unsung heroes from the peak days of the Philly Soul scene back in the 60s and 70s. The local talents were first known as The Twilights and only recorded three demos in their early years though they did land on Phil-L.A of Soul in the mid-seventies. The musicians in the band did also work on several other records with other artists so had plenty of chops as this new 45rpm shows. It features 'Now We're Sure' with soaring vocal harmonies and lovely funky bass next to smooth drum work. The instrumental allows that to shine through even more.

Junior Dell & D Lites - "East Of Hurghada" (3:59)
Woodfield Rd Allstars - "Lickle Fat Mattress" (3:10)
Review: Junior Dell & The D-Lites are one of reggae's most accomplished outfits and they have a vast arsenal of tunes to back that up. This one is one of many delightful dubs - and it now makes its way to us via Original Gravity. 'East Of Hurghada' has a noodling melodic lead and nice dusty drums with a more textured horn eventually taking the main stage. On the flip, Woodfield Rd Allstars step up with 'Lickle Fat Mattress' which is another blend of ska, reggae and dub with some natty keys.

No Way Back (Ron Hardy edit) (8:30)
Review: Ron Hardy's legacy lives on though stories of his legendary DJ sets but also his seemingly endless catalogue of edits and reworks of the tunes he played in his heyday. Here we have another such exhibit in which he flips some classic disco. The original version of 'No Way Back' is riddled with picked guitar licks and dreamy keys while a funky low end moves on this disco-rock gem as brass bursts out for added oomph. Hardy ups the pace, twists it beyond this realm and adds big drum breaks that are Prue bit for dancers. It's a classic in its own right that gets regular plays by more bold and eclectic DJs.

Jimmy Delphs - "Dancing A Hole In The World" (2:39)
The Four Pros - "Just Another Girl" (2:53)
Review: Northern Soul fans will immediately know that these two tunes are both much-loved bangers from the days of Wigan Pier and the likes. Carla is pressing them up to a new 7" and both sound as good as ever. Jimmy Delphs opens up with 'Dancing A Hole In The World' which is a big stepper with tanging guitars and driving horns all joined by tambourines and raw but soulful vocals. The Four Pros step up on the flip with 'Just Another Girl' which is a quicker jam with banging groves, nice harmonies and plenty of energy for those all-night sessions spinning out your best moves on the floor.

Review: Iconic modern soul label Daptone does a fine job of capturing the rawness of old with each and every vital 7" they put out. Now they introduce another fantastic voice to the world in the form of Napoleon Demps. A Flint Michigan native raised on classic soul sounds, he is an accomplished vocalist himself these days and has long been a fan of this label. He lay down this first single last year in Penrose Recorders in Riverside, California and the results are stunning: 'Norma Jean' is funky and groovy with plenty of vocal nuance and a heart swelling sound that soars next to sweeping strings and crisp wooden hits.

Review: Stomping northern soul vibes abound on this recently unearthed gem from The Demures. With its pumping beats and heart melting harmonies it's hard to believe this went unnoticed for so many years. If you're after something a little softer and emotional then flip for The Lost Generation's "The Sly Slick And Wicked". No, they're not describing Juno's record reviewers, they're lamenting over love lost and heartbreakers in the most emphatic, string-drenched soulful way. Two beautiful cuts on one 7". Bonus.

It's All The Time (3:06)
Review: A welcome return to action for Nashville scene stalwart DeRobert Adams and his faithful backing band the Half Truths, who between them have released countless revivalist soul gems over the last decade. '100 Yard Dash' is a fiercely up-tempo affair, with Adams' powerful vocals (he's somewhere between James Brown and Teddy Pendergrass) and the band's 1960s style soul instrumentation riding a breakbeat so fast that you could probably play it in a drum & bass set. It is a genuinely ace track all told, as is the more punchy, semi-stomping flipside funk workout 'It's All The Time'.

Review: DeRobert & The Half-Truths from Nashville, Tennessee are back again with an album we would best describe as straight up, and here's the title track on 7" vinyl titled '100 Yard Dash'. On this track, just like many others on the forthcoming album, Adams sings about one's inner demons, the state of the world, minding your own business and life's struggles - with influences of James Brown and Curtis Mayfield. Released on G.E.D. Soul Records, which is run by DeRobert Adams' rhythm section - namely Nick DeVan (drums) and Dave Singleton (bass).

Shirley Diamond - "You Don't Know Who You Sleeping With" (3:43)
Review: Diamond & James, aka Jesse James and Shirley Diamond, unite for a timeless collaboration that will swell the heart. First introduced by the late Harvey Scales, Jesse and Shirley's partnership flourished over time while Shirley, an educator from Atlanta, balanced her performing career with teaching, always showcasing her talents on weekends and school breaks. She has graced stages alongside music icons like Atlantic Starr and Bobby Bland, proving herself to be a versatile talent with notable releases like 'You Don't Have To Be Sad, To Sing The Blues' and 'Strong Woman'. This one 'You Don't Know Who You Sleeping With,' is a duet produced by Felton Pilate that highlights their enduring musical synergy and dedication to their craft.
