Positiva Sampler 001 (limited translucent blue vinyl 12" in die-cut sleeve)
Cat: 12TIV 2024. Rel: 04 Oct 24

UK Garage
Sammy Virji - "If U Need It" (extended mix) (3:58)
Gorgon City - "Voodoo" (extended mix) (6:11)
Azari & III & Max Dean - "Reckless" (2024 extended mix) (7:49)
Alan Fitzpatrick & Ronnie Spiteri - "On My Mind" (extended mix) (4:39)
Review: Time-honoured, blue-crossed phono-phrenic audio pharmacists Positiva celebrate their 30th anniversary with the launch of a brand new sampler series. Simply titled 'Positiva', the new outing spans every sonic end-logic from slick UK garage to mesmeric trance, the throughline being the modern uplifter sound into which the label has settled; a far cry from their jet-propulsive Ibiza-rave garage house days of yore. Most of the tracks on this first edition of the series are already floating about out there, though they've never been compiled onto a single record before: Sammy Virji and Gorgon City complement each other well on the A-side's 'Voodoo' and 'If You Need It'; then Azari & III, Max Dean, Alan Fitzpatrick and Ronnie Spiteri spin things out ever further, into two warming, well-layered party-pushers driven by ecstatic vocals.

Gamith - "Darkness" (3:03)
Review: The Breaks and Beats label kicks on with a 31st instalment of magical sound that will inject soul and funk into any party and keep working DJs well stocked with heat this winter. First up on this limited 7" is The Webs with 'It's So Hard To Break A Habit', a slow and sentimental sound with aching v vocal harmonies and gentle rhythms laced with melancholic melodies. Gamith's 'Darkness' picks up the energy levels with some more bristling breaks and live drum sounds, funky vocal stylings and psyched-out guitar lines.

Review: Is It Balearic? presents the second EP from the Wrekin Crew, continuing where the first left off and delivering two original tracks, 'Vapour Trail' and 'Broken Wings'. 'Vapour Trails' has the trademark nod to the Italo Disco & emotional pop bombs that are a staple of their DJ sets. Goldsuite remixes Vapour Trails and create a softly mesmerising balearic pop twilight shuffler. 'Broken Wings' keeps the same feel, poignant vocals over slightly more late night beats and Woolfy brings a cosmic arpy feel and dubs it up for a more electronic groove.

Review: CyberindustrialEBMwavepost-punkIDMmutantelectro. No commas, no punctuation, just one throbbing, convulsing, dystopian mass informed by the bleakest visions of a sci-fi future we deserve but definitely don't want. Originally hailing from Australia, but long-since relocating to Berlin's eastern ends, Kristian Bahoudian, AKA Kris Baha, has clearly absorbed his surrounds, grown through them, and learnt how to channel that brutalism into something truly potent. It's also narratively driven, with the titular spirits in the system a reference to humans in the age of advanced artificial intelligence - beholden to dictatorial codes that rob us of our essence, vitality and individuality. An awakening among a select few means a small number of people become self-aware, again, and can begin pushing back. And this point of tension, between human and machine, plays out sonically. Talk about painting a vivid picture.

Review: By K-pop standards, rapper-turned-popstar G Dragon (Real Name Kwon Ji Yong) is something of a veteran. He's been a star in his native South Korea since the tail end of the 2010s, enjoying success for a trio of albums released between 2009 and 2013. Ubermensch, officially his fourth full-length, sees him return to solo action following a period spent working as a songwriter and producer for other artists. It's a typically entertaining, fun and boisterous set that sees him sing (and more occasionally rap) atop tracks that variously mix and match elements of P-funk, EDM, disco, synth-funk and 21st century pop. K-pop fans take note!

Review: The sixth opus to be released by the Positive Future label is upon us. Here French producer Gab Jr invites us to penetrate a deep forest, and to listen eagerly to a collective fungal song. A rather large eight-track EP, 'The Mushroom's Ride' themes itself after mushrooms and their enduring influence on the human psyche, musical or not. In fact, it would seem that the entire Positive Future label is themed after fly agaric, wavy caps and/or other magic mycelial options available to the hallucinogenically disposed raver; it's only convenient that such fast-growth electro-house mycotoxins as 'KCFF', 'Positive' and 'Your Movement' should end up so infectious at the dead root, bringing foraged elemental choices such as electric guitars and wow-ing synth hits to the substrate floor.

Review: Peter Gabriel's third self-titled album, often referred to as Melt, marks a significant artistic leap for the musician. Released in 1980, this groundbreaking record is notable for its innovative integration of electronic effects and the revolutionary gated drum sound developed with Phil Collins and engineer Hugh Padgham. The album's cover art, a melting portrait of Gabriel by Hipgnosis, adds to its striking visual identity. Co-produced by Gabriel and Steve Lillywhite, Melt showcases a unique blend of influences, notably African rhythms and experimental soundscapes. Opening with the eerie 'Intruder', the album establishes a dark and unsettling atmosphere that persists throughout. Tracks like 'No Self Control' and 'I Don't Remember' feature dynamic arrangements, with the latter providing one of the album's most memorable hooks. The politically charged 'Biko' serves as a poignant anthem for anti-apartheid activism, encapsulating Gabriel's deep engagement with global issues. Not only did the album achieve commercial success, topping charts in the UK, but it also solidified Gabriel's identity as a solo artist, paving the way for future explorations in music technology. This reissue on 180-gram vinyl brings the album's rich textures and intricate sound design back to life, allowing listeners to experience its emotional depth and musical innovation anew. Melt remains a powerful example to Gabriel's vision and a landmark in progressive music.

Now reissued, it features the hit single 'Dreams,' which topped the UK charts. The album blends smooth soul with pop and dance influences while Gabrielle's distinctively husky voice, emotive delivery, and relatable lyrics about love, heartbreak, and self-empowerment continue to resonate widely. Tracks like 'Going Nowhere' and 'I Wish' are further proof of her skills and help make her a major voice in British pop.

Review: Painter, musician, actor, director and producer. John Lurie has done a lot in his time, whether that's appearing in 19 movies, composing for 20 TV shows and films - including some of those he was the star of - or producing primitivist art work. Here, we get to engage with two of those back catalogues, even if only because these are scores to a pair of his most iconic flicks. Always cool and stripped, Lurie's stuff is the kind of experimental-leaning jazz that works so well when setting the scene. And this applies off screen, IRL too: pressing play here will only serve to create a mood wherever you are, no matter what you're doing. One of shadowy streets, yellow hued spots, smoky barrooms and dark backrooms, a sense of after hours exploration.

Review: The 1986 sonic pentad by Diamanda Galas, Saint Of The Pit, is the second of two records forming the devised, pestilent occult rite - in her terms, the "plague mass" - known as the Masque Of The Red Death. In clairvoyant dialogue with the first part (The Divine Punishment), both records, in symbiosis, are said to possess an innate correctitude, with saintly playback "possible at maximum volume only." When we oblige by Galas' command, we find ourselves thickly immersed in the kind of sonic esoterics that only the most adept of oneiromancers might be able to swallow and integrate into their mantic: waspish whispers, dulotic dirges, heathen hums. Galas' episcope is a dissenting, idolatrous projection in sound and vision, with 'Artemis' and 'Deliver Me' spanning red-robed, sectarian vocal operatics, not to mention their backing, low-noted, open piano chord strikes. The *eschaton* of the record is, of course, is its quintessential fifth star-point: 'Cris D'aveugle (Blind Man's Cry)', on which Galas, the occult visionary, profanes the lyrical votive candle wax with blasphemous talk of nailed eyes and desecrated caskets.

The double CD includes never-before-heard tracks like 'Shout You Down' from the Today sessions and 'I Wanna Live' from the On Fire sessions. Drummer Damon Krukowski remarked on the nostalgic experience of revisiting these recordings, likening it to opening an old journal. Bassist Naomi Yang reflected on the developmental journey captured in the tracks, highlighting the evolution of their collective sound and her own bass playing. Galaxie 500's three seminal albums, Today (1988), On Fire (1989), and This Is Our Music (1990), were all recorded with producer Kramer at Noise New York. This compilation completes the band's recorded output from those pivotal years, offering fans a deeper dive into their creative process.

Standouts include 'Cradle Rock' and 'Tattoo'd Lady' from 'Sounds of The Seventies' (1973), 'Shin Kicker' from 'BBC In Concert' (1979), and 'Continental Op' from the 1986 Paul Jones Blues Show. Each track exemplifies Gallagher's extraordinary guitar work and raw, powerful vocals. This collection not only spotlights Gallagher's enduring influence but also provides a journey through his evolving sound, from the gritty blues of his early days to the more refined, yet equally intense performances of the 80s. Many will say, Rory Gallagher's exceptional talent and his significant contribution to rock and blues music is most shown in his live performances. To many this is one of the most important collections of BBC recorded music. Certainly, the most extensive.

Review: In 1972, Irish blues guitarist Rory Gallagher was at the peak of his powers. On the back of two much-loved and critically acclaimed albums, Gallagher was named Melody Maker's Musician of the Year. Before scooping that gong, he toured Europe and, while in Switzerland, recorded a now legendary session for Radio Suisse. This CD showcases that session in full, complete with crowd noise and trademark effects aplenty, with Gallagher and his band's dazzling - if fuzzy and lo-fi, in keeping with the original recording - blues and blues-rock performances (Gallagher's squally and extended guitar solos are especially memorable) being joined by interview experts and introductions by the radio station's unnamed disc jockey.

Review: Galliano's return with Halfway Somewhere marks a significant moment in the resurgence of acid jazz. Led by founder Rob Gallagher, the band delve into the essence of club culture with their first single, 'Circles Going Round The Sun,' exploring the transformative power of dance. Referencing cultural icons like Andrew Weatherall and David Mancuso, Galliano capture the spirit of London's underground scene from the late 80s, blending music, dance, fashion, and art. With their debut on Gilles Peterson's Talkin' Loud label in 1990, Galliano epitomized reinvention, embracing a fusion of influences from Jamaican style to spoken word records. Now, more than three decades later, they return with a refreshed lineup, drawing inspiration from the global jazz scene. Halfway Somewhere reflects Galliano's evolution, responding to the dynamic landscape of contemporary jazz while retaining their signature sound. With contributions from longtime members and guest artists, the album embodies the band's enduring spirit of experimentation and joy. As they navigate this new chapter, Galliano proves they're still on a journey, but one filled with excitement and creativity.

Review: Almost three decades on from their last release, Acid Jazz forefathers Galliano are back with news of their new LP Halfway Somewhere, released on Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Recordings. Led by lead single 'Circles Going Round The Sun', which proffers a watery, spiritual jazz-dance exposition through which the raspy vocal humours of the group's founder, Rob Gallagher, waxes poetic about the meaning of getting together for a boogie in the club. Where the somatic essence of the night might otherwise be resigned to experience alone, Galliano defy the unfortunate tendency for philistinism among dance music enjoyers in favour of a consistent spoken-word throughline; this is what the group have done since the 1980s, when they arrived as the first act on Gilles Peterson's Talkin' Loud label in 1990, with 'Welcome To The Story'. Their first full-length record to emerge since their first album, Live at The Liquid Room (Tokyo), released in 1997, Halfway Somewhere is a triumphant yet latent return for these essential players.

Review: Rob Gallagher and company make up Galliano, the trailblazing jazz and broken beat supergroup, active at least since 1997 andrenowned for their contribution to the musical landscape across the difficult-to-bridge gaps between music, fashion, spoken word and a concern for current affairs. Having staked their claim to their portion of the jazz and electronica pie as early as 1990, when they first appeared on the scene via Gilles Peterson's Talkin' Loud label, Galliano have gone down in memory as a pioneering acid hip-jazz act, "capturing a scene (then) built on re-invention", in the words of Brownswood. Now the five-piece collective once again moves at one, synergising over a nineteen-track opus, three decades on from their debut, recalling the (literal) quintessence of London's down-in-history acid jazz scene.

He is also a member of the Mercury-nominated Dinosaur and has collaborated with key jazz cats such as Shabaka Hutchings, Emma-Jean Thackray and Norma Winstone. Known for his improvisational prowess, his latest solo album taps into that skill once more and is an entirely improvised record that takes in quiet beauty like the opener, more theatric drama on 'Still Under Storms' and world jazz sounds on 'High & Wide'.

Review: Asher Gamedze's Constitution unfolds as a profound exploration of ensemble dynamics and collective creativity. Following the 2023 release Turbulence and Pulse, this double album introduces The Black Lungs, a ten-piece ensemble that expands Gamedze's vision of polyrhythmic and modal music. Recorded in a single day at Cape Town's Sound and Motion Studios, the album is a great example to the power of collective expression and autonomous constitution. The album features Gamedze on drums alongside Ru Slayen on percussion, Sean Sanby on bass, and Nobuhle Ashanti on piano, creating a cohesive rhythm section. This core is enriched by Tumi Pheko's cornet, Garth Erasmus and Jed Petersen's saxophones, Tina Mene's vocals, Athi Ngcaba's trombone, and Fred Moten's spoken word, each adding layers of tonal and atonal exploration. Constitution embodies the spirit of the Black Consciousness Movement, blending revolutionary thought with musical innovation. The ensemble's interplay reflects a process of collective unraveling, questioning, and creative resistance against systemic oppression. Gamedze's work is both a tribute to historical struggles and a celebration of the ensemble as a site of resistance and artistic possibility.

Review: GANAVYA's upcoming album Daughter of a Temple promises an extraordinary fusion of spiritual jazz and South Asian devotional music, featuring a rich tapestry of collaborative tracks. The lead single, 'draw something beautiful,' released in July, sets the tone with its ethereal blend of vocal intensity and intricate arrangements. Expect contributions from esperanza spalding and Vijay Iyer, whose signature styles weave into GANAVYA's soulful soundscapes. Shabaka Hutchings adds a vibrant spiritual jazz energy, while Immanuel Wilkins brings a hauntingly melodic saxophone presence. Each track unfolds as a layered ritual, capturing the album's theme of collective artistic and spiritual exploration.

Review: Gandalf's 1969 self-titled album stands as a masterpiece of haunting psych-pop, now reissued from the original master tapes. Recorded at Century Sound in Manhattan with Grammy-winning producer Brooks Arthur, the album's ethereal vocals and innovative production techniques - including the use of a Binson Echorec - set a mesmerising tone. With sitars, vibes, B3 organs, and harpsichord layered over minor guitar chords and bass drones, each track unfolds like a vivid journey through sonic landscapes. Released on clear vinyl and cut by Kevin Gray, this reissue invites listeners into a richly textured experience best enjoyed with eyes closed and the music turned up. Gandalf's album is a shinning example of timeless craftsmanship in psychedelic music, beckoning both old fans and new listeners alike to immerse themselves in its beauty and depth. Review: Real rap heads will know that in the mid-90s, Memphis was the centre of an intriguing scene. It boasted a ton of great artists who all helped foment a raw, hard-hitting style with direct lyrics that revealed plenty about life on the local streets. Gangsta Blac's Breakin Da Law is a record from that time which gets reissued here and takes you right back to energy of Memphis at that time. With its pounding beats, eerie synths and relentless flows, the tracks capture the gritty realities of street life and rebellion while Gangsta Blac's commanding delivery and vivid storytelling paint a picture of survival and defiance that still resonates while channelling the spirit of the Dirty South and Southern hip-hop's golden era.

Review: Angelica Garcia's Gemelo is a bold exploration of grief and self-discovery, encapsulated in a vibrant tapestry of hybrid-pop sounds. The album delves into the complexities of grief, from its inherent loneliness to its eventual liberation, while also deconstructing universal themes like religion, heritage, and womanhood. As a reflection of modern America's cultural landscape, Gemelo marks Garcia's first album predominantly sung in Spanish, challenging traditional notions of what constitutes an American record. Produced by Carlos Arevalo of Chicano Batman, the album is meticulously sequenced, guiding listeners through a journey from delicate introspection to visceral intensity. Born in East LA with Mexican and Salvadoran roots, Garcia embodies the evolving fusion of Hispanic influences in contemporary America. 'Color De Dolor,' the lead has lush textures and a kaleidoscopic quality and offers a captivating glimpse into the artist's multifaceted world. Following her acclaimed 2020 release Cha Cha Palace, which garnered attention for its innovative sound, Gemelo solidifies Garcia's place as a rising star in the music scene with captivating melodies and thought-provoking themes.

Review: To red and black splatter vinyl comes Nubya Garcia's latest full-length record Odyssey, out of which which a nascent batch of volcanic red jazz, dub and hip-hop fusions effuse. Produced by Garcia in collaboration with London legend Kwes, Garcia returns with Joe Armon-Jones (keys), Daniel Casimir (bass) and Sam Jones (drums), also enlisting the aid of such featured guests as Esperanza Spalding and Georgia Anne Muldrow. Leading with the felsic dance that is 'The Seer', across which what sound to be microtonal saxophone improvisations move across dark interregnums and moodily rapacious razzes, the ensuing album is equally as explosive and never settles or sets, despite its molten presentation.

Review: For every artist who reaches immense heights early into their career, a second album brings much anticipation, and the exceptional tenor saxophonist Nubya Garcia's Odyssey, is no exception. Musicians of the calibre of Garcia and her band have been honing their craft forever, and like this double album's name, all musically travel long and hard paths... Those that arrive at Garcia's deliciously distinct compositions on the legendary Concord Jazz record label, home of that other pioneer Esperanza Spalding, who guests on 'Dawn'. Garcia's luscious orchestrations fuse jazz with d&b, Latin, r&b, dub and beyond, in thoughtful syncopations and intriguing harmonics that speak of journeying. So, relish the funky intro of 'Set it Free' and Garcia's sultry tones with Richie's sweet and endearing siren-like vocals... On 'Seer' enjoy Garcia's precision, locked in heavenly reverbs and echoes playing off Jones' junglism and Armon-Jones' keys in a free jazz blast, and on 'Clarity' let Garcia, with her sisters-in-brass Maurice-Grey and Turton interweave Casimir's Bass in a luxurious cinematic embrace. Garcia with Kwes produce this adventure, one that undoubtedly will receive even more accolades. Odyssey, an album for lovers of all manifestations of jazz excellence to collect and treasure.

Review: Tenor saxophonist, bandleader and composer Nubya Garcia returns with her sophomore album, Odyssey, her second release on the Concord Jazz imprint, out in September 2024. Backlit by a decidedly crimson red, Garcia comes back by the likes of Kwes. and Joe-Armon Jones for a full dozen tracks of epical spiritual jazz travails. Laconic yet ipso facto expressive, Garcia remarks of the record that she felt that it ended up 'transversing so many things'; rather than settling on just one universe as a homeward base, Garcia finds freedom in the continual movement between universes. Led by the tense but no less joy-inflective 'The Seer', on which moods of broken jazz, and that of a treacherous but sagacious journeys, is evinced, Odyssey kicks things off on a larger-than-life note.

Review: After taking part in Kid Creole's typically eccentric Aural Exciters project, vocalist Taana Gardner joined forces with producer Kenton Nix and delivered a debut album on West End that remains one of the strongest disco full length outings of the late 1970s. This double disc set presents an expanded version of that set of CD 1 - complete with Nix's 12" extensions of key cuts 'When You Touch Me', 'Just Be a Friend' and 'Work That Body' - with CD2 collecting the vocalist's later West End singles. These include Larry Levan's legendary takes on 'Heartbeat' (a boogie-era slow-disco classic) and 'No Frills', as well as later Masters at Work takes on 'Work That Body' and 'When You Touch Me' and a surprise house-style Tom Moulton revision of 'Work That Body'. Review: Melody Gardot's album The Absence is an ambitious blend of global influences, from the sun-drenched tones of Brazil to the evocative atmospheres of Morocco and Buenos Aires. Gardot's songwriting shines, merging her signature wry honesty with the rhythms and moods of the countries she explores. Tracks like 'Mira' and 'Lisboa' are lush with Spanish guitars, harps, and local percussions, crafting a backdrop of lazy days and warm nights. Gardot's voice, ever sultry and inviting, navigates through these arrangements with an ease that recalls classic bossa nova, occasionally flirting with the styles of New Orleans jazz on tracks like 'Goodbye.' While the album sometimes risks slipping into the overly mannered, Gardot maintains a charm that makes The Absence a compelling listen, proving her continual growth as a sophisticated singer/songwriter with a worldly touch.

Review: In alignment with London clubbing institution Fabric's 25th year, the huge figural techno head Laurent Garnier joins on for the former's Fabric Presents mix series, which selects artists to record different stylistic kinds of DJ mixes - separate to the longtime, peaktime, and often drum & bass-oriented Fabriclive series. Among the shortlist of artists drawn up, Garnier's name stuck out like a sore thumb, not least since those who are inevitably chosen had to have risen to fame in roughly the same timeframe as the Farringdon nightclub did. Fabric make the following promise: Laurent's mix, released here in the form of a deluxe CD compendium, will not only pay homage to the club, but also showcase his own mastery of genres and the diversity of his genius. The release will drop physical-only as a deluxe vinyl collectable and on CD and it'll also feature a new original four-track EP from Laurent.

Review: Few artists in electronic music are as legendary as Laurent Garnier. It is only right then that he finally makes his entry into the equally titanic and influential Fabric Presents series. His mix is a real doozy that here gets the full deluxe edition treatment and comes on 4 x12"s with a hefty booklet. The House Odyssey mix opens with afro house from South African producer Mr. Blase, leading into vibrant cuts from Cape Verde to Chicago. Newer faces like Culoe De Song, Neinzer, and Tal Fussman join stalwarts DJ Spen, DJ Lady D and Mike Dunn. The Rhythmic Resonance mix delivers high-impact techno moments from Red Axes, John Tejada, Electric Rescue, and more. Garnier's UK-focused Into The Low-End session includes Skrillex, MC GQ and more and all in all offers up a diverse mastery, from luminous house to bass-heavy techno.

Review: Fifty years into his career, Gary Bartz continues to produce powerful spiritual jazz. In 2020, he collaborated with London band Maisha for Night Dreamer Direct To Disc Sessions and in 2021 he teamed up with Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Adrian Younge for Jazz Is Dead 6, both of which prove that. Now we get a special new pressing of his Live In Bremen 1975 album recorded during a European tour and capturing Bartz's groovy quartet with Chris Mims on keys, Curtis Robertson on bass and Howard King on sticks. The set revisits classics like 'Celestial Blues' and 'Uhuru Sasa' while showcasing Bartz's soulful sax and thoughtful compositions.

Review: Wolfgang Voigt's groundbreaking project Gas returns with a definitive reissue of its self-titled debut album, originally released in 1996 on Mille Plateaux and now reintroduced by Kompakt on CD format. This release marks a long-awaited return to the foundational essence of Gas, as initially envisioned by Voigt. Gas unfolds across six expansive, untitled tracks that drift seamlessly, each a captivating journey of ethereal loops and rhythmic undercurrents. Distant echoes of classical motifs add to the album's enigmatic allure. This debut stands out for its airy, evocative atmosphere and its exploratory nature. Gas not only revisits a pivotal moment in electronic music history but also underscores Voigt's enduring influence and avant-garde spirit, setting the stage for the techno and ambient genres to unfold from his influence. There is quite nothing like the first four Gas albums.

Review: Wolfgang Voigt's seminal project Gas returns with a definitive reissue of its eponymous debut album, originally released in 1996 on Mille Plateaux and now presented anew by Kompakt on a lavish 3x12 vinyl set. This release marks a long-awaited return to the pure essence of Gas, as initially envisioned by Voigt. Before this full-length debut, hints of Gas's distinctive sound surfaced through early EPs and compilation tracks, showcasing Voigt's knack for ambient electronic landscapes. Gas unfolds across six expansive, untitled tracks that drift seamlessly, each a mesmerising journey of ethereal loops and rhythmic undercurrents. Voices from distant classical motifs echo faintly, adding to the album's enigmatic allure. While later albums like Zauberberg and Konigsforst would refine and deepen the Gas aesthetic, this debut stands out for its airy, evocative mood and its more fluid, exploratory nature. It captures Gas at a moment of artistic genesis, where Voigt's sonic vision begins to crystallise amidst dreamlike textures and subtle rhythmic structures. Gas, in its reissued form, not only revisits a pivotal moment in electronic music history but also serves as a testament to Voigt's enduring influence and avant-garde spirit, setting the stage for its legendary successors.

Review: You will always have a job second-guessing where The Gaslamp Killer might go next. This time, it is to a new collaborative album with Jason Wool. ANANDA find the pair cooking up 33 minutes of avant-garde experimental jazz underpinned by heavy bass and topped with plenty of sound design madness that calls to mind the likes of Stanley Clark, David Axelrod and Aphex Twin. The synapse firing collage of 'Chaos In The Brain' is a great example of the joys of this record - organic and synthetic, chaotic yet calm. It's a real treat.

Review: We Have Dozens of Titles by Gastr Del Sol is a treasure trove for fans, offering a glimpse into the experimental post-rock pioneers' journey from their Bastro roots to their groundbreaking work as Gastr Del Sol. This collection, curated from their 1993-1998 recordings, shows their evolution into sonic explorers, pushing the boundaries of post-rock with influences from musique concrete and free improv. The unearthed CBC recording from Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville in 1997 is a highlight, featuring ethereal versions of familiar tracks like 'The Seasons Reverse' and 'Blues Subtitled No Sense of Wonder.''The live rendition of "Onion Orange' is a revelation, with Jim O'Rourke's kosmische synth waves intertwining seamlessly with David Grubbs' intricate guitar work. Additionally, the inclusion of rarities like 'The Harp Factory On Lake Street' and tracks from various compilations adds depth to the collection. Each track, whether a live performance or a studio recording, has been meticulously mastered or remastered by O'Rourke, enhancing the listening experience. We Have Dozens of Titles not only fills in gaps in Gastr Del Sol's discography but also exemplifies their innovative approach to music-making.

Review: Gastr del Sol might have gone their separate ways some 25 years ago, but they have recently taken the time to dig back into their fine archives. As a result they now serve up an alternate view of their superb, boundary breaking and genre busting run between 1993 and 1998 with a title box set, We Have Dozens Of Titles, on Drag City. Returning like a reverberating bolt from the blue, this album reignites the essence of the group and immerses listeners back into the whirlwind of their transformative era. It comprises previously uncaptured studio recordings and meticulously preserved unreleased live performances that all offer a captivating glimpse into the band's journey.

Review: Phoenix, Arizona based modern death metal brutalists Gatecreeper return with their highly anticipated third full-length Dark Superstition. The first album from the band since 2019's Deserted showcases an embracing of both the hyper-violent grindcore-indebted cuts from their 2021 mini-LP/EP An Unexpected Reality, as well as the brooding doom-metal opus 'Emptiness' that bookended the project. Recorded at God City Studios with Converge guitarist and iconic producer Kurt Ballou, while citing influences from melodic death and gothic metal acts such as In Flames, Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride and Anathema, the long gestation period has resulted in the band's most sonically sprawling work to date. Newly signed to Nuclear Blast, the decrepit stage appears to be set for Gatecreeper to finally seize all of their bubbling potential by the horns and throat. Mark our words when we say Dark Superstition will be one of the definitive extreme metal contributions of 2024.

Review: Marvin Gaye's When I'm Alone I Cry reissue is full of the soulful legend's early aspirations to break into the jazz and pop markets. Recorded in 1964, Gaye's smooth, silky voice, draws clear inspiration from icons like Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra and the album is a collection of jazz standards, demonstrating Marvin's deep passion for a more adult sound. The production on When I'm Alone I Cry is polished, with lush orchestrations that perfectly complement Marvin's gentle, emotive vocals, with tracks like 'I Was Telling Her About You', the title track and 'If My Heart Could Sing' particularly amazing, revealing Gaye's ability to convey deep emotion. Though the album didn't achieve the same commercial success as his later works, it's a treasure for those studying Marvin's artistry, highlighting his versatility and desire to explore different genres. Fans of Billie Holiday's Lady in Satin or Sinatra's In The Wee Small Hours will appreciate the album's tender, melancholic mood.

Review: Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's first duet album is a definitive collection of classic soul, and still one of Motown's most beloved releases. Featuring four monumental hitsi'Ain't No Mountain High Enough', 'If I Could Build My Whole World Around You', 'Your Precious Love', and 'If This World Were Mine'ithe album showcases the impeccable chemistry between Gaye and Terrell, and their ability to deliver emotional depth with ease. The production, with its lush string arrangements and smooth rhythms, perfectly complements the pair's soulful delivery. Though the album features familiar, chart-topping tracks, it also offers deep cuts that reveal a more intimate side of the duo's connection. The seamless blend of Gaye's rich, velvety voice and Terrell's bright, soaring vocals is the cornerstone of these timeless songs. While Gaye had already earned his place as a key figure in Motown, this collaboration with Terrell would solidify their roles as one of soul music's most iconic duos. United is a masterclass in classic soul, built on love, harmony, and timeless vocals.

Review: To commemorate the 20th anniversary of D'Angelo's iconic album Voodoo, Amerigo Gazaway had crafted a masterful tribute that reinterprets several standout tracks from the original. Utilising live instruments like electric guitar, synth bass, clavinet, organ and Rhodes, Gazaway breathes fresh life into these classic cuts while maintaining the essence of their grooves. The result is a woozy, silky update that melds elements of hip-hop, gospel, neo-soul and r&b, creating a rich tapestry of sound that honors the source material. With fourteen tracks, including both vocal and instrumental versions, this project captures the spirit of Voodoo while infusing it with new energy. A highlight of this release is the bonus track featuring Raphael Saadiq alongside D'Angelo on 'Be Here', which further emphasises the collaborative spirit of the genre. Gazaway's reimagining not only celebrates the timeless quality of Voodoo but also showcases his talent for blending classic sounds with contemporary influences, making this tribute a worthy addition to any music lover's collection.

Review: The Doober, the latest instalment in the Music for Saxofone and Bass Guitar series by jazz duo Sam Gendel and Sam Wilkes, is a freewheeling listen through covers of songs by artists like Joni Mitchell, Judee Sill, and Sheryl Crow. Recorded live, the album captures the raw energy and spontaneity of their performances that feature Gendel's dynamic saxophone work and Wilkes' bouncing basslines. The duo's approach to covers is far from conventional, as they prioritise spacious textural exploration over faithful renditions. Tracks like 'Rugged Road' and 'The Circle Game' undergo radical transformations, evolving into wriggling, cartoonish masses and modal studies, respectively. Gendel and Wilkes playfully deconstruct each song, infusing them with their own cheeky sense of abandon. Despite their unconventional approach, the duo's chemistry shines through on every track, with each piece serving as a framed photo of outer space, presenting the infinite within a digestible container. The album's highlights include unexpected interpolations, such as a jazz rendition of Sheryl Crow's 'Tomorrow Never Dies' and a seamless transition from Miklos Rozsa's 'Love Theme (From Ben Hur)' into Chris Isaak's 'Wicked Game.'

Review: General Magic's first sonic explorations began a whole three decades ago now and to mark the occasion Editions Mego serves up Bosky. The Austrian duo of Ramon Bauer and Andi Pieper originally emerged with experimental techno releases like Frantz and Rechenkonig with their wonky, avant-garde rhythms. Following a long hiatus, their 2023 comeback Nein Aber Ja reignited their sonic curiosity and this record continues their legacy with unpredictable compositions blending synthetic voices, wild percussion and surreal textures. Tracks like 'Club Duchamp' and 'Noorenhalt' showcase their signature playfulness while Tina Frank's abstract artwork sets the tone. Bosko is a futuristic fusion of robotic punk and perplexing funk, perfectly suited for today's AI age.
