Nestor Alvarez - "Burning Spear" (3:40)
La Machine D'Argent - "Burning Spear" (5:37)
Review: This is another reissue of a record that remains an ongoing favourite. Original Gravity delivered again with the original pressing featuring two unique versions of 'Burning Spear'. Nestor Alvarez opens with a lively, Latin-inspired rendition filled with fluttering flute melodies, raw drum beats and vibrant dancing keys that radiate sunny energy. On the flip, La Machine D'Argent takes a more cosmic approach, smoothing the vibe and layering spaced-out sounds for a dreamy, immersive journey. This release showcases Original Gravity's knack for reimagining funk with flair by offering two distinct yet equally good takes on a timeless groove.

Kylie Auldist & Skinny Dipp - "Back For More" (3:36)
Kylie Auldist & Lincoln Room - "Party At My Place" (3:27)
Review: "I'm like a monkey with cocaine" goes the vocal on the opening tune here but that conjures up images of quite a riotous scene. In fact, the music is superbly seductive, cool and calm, with low slung disco funk, lush cosmic chords and a laidback, almost aloof vocal all soothing the soul and making for some nice dance floor intimacy. After that collab between Kylie Auldist and Skinny Dipp, Kylie hooks up with Lincoln Room for 'Party At My Place' which has an odds school instrumental disco feel embellished with low slung grooves and lovely claps.

Review: Destination Martinique: Sofrito's Island Series gets lively to the sound of Michel Bagoe and the brilliantly named Les Hamsters. The former lays down a sublime carnival soundtrack with relentless drums and a highlife feel to the guitars while the latter develop the street party feel with rippling drums and tightly plucked guitars. Guaranteed to whisk your dance to another world, just like the rest of the Sofrito discography!

Turn It Up (acappella)
Review: Australian band The Bamboos have been holding down things on the funky side of town since 2001, gaining fans all over the world with their authentic, dirty funk nuggets. In the same vein as bands like El Michels Affair or Breakestra, these guys are students of the classic breaks that underpinned the sample-hungry glory days of hip-hop. They've also had the incredible honor to back up some of funk's most revered names, notably New Orleans hit-machine Eddie Bo, Syl Johnson and Eddie Floyd.

Ahead of their new album 4 comes single "On The Sly", a perfect slice of mid-tempo joy, which has the same rollicking cowbell-driven vibe as classic UBB staple "Get Me Back On Time, Engine Number 9" by Wilson Pickett. Soulsides MC and singer Lyrics Born joins them on 2nd cut Turn It Up, another popcorn funk winner complete with chicken-scratch guitar parts worthy of James Brown stalwart Jimmy Nolen. Hanging out with the Aussies seems to have rubbed off on the Californian MC, as he even sings "Turn it up mate" at one point! DJ's get taken care of with an accapella and an instrumental too, making this release a good way to put some funk back in your trunk.

Ray Barretto - "Right On" (2:43)
Latin Brothers - "Las Calenas Son Como Las Flores" (3:57)
Review: Raroraro rev up the rarity engine once again with this sunkissed Latin double-up. Ray Barretto's heavily sampled (but seldom bettered) "Right On" gets the A: a hammering piano hook, whirlwind percussion and big horns, it's an instant carnival that's still as fearless as it was it was in 1970. Columbia's Latin Brothers' take us five years forward with "Las Calenas Son Como Las Flores". A much more smouldering number with a little more island magic in the horn arrangement, this one builds from sunset to a fiery sunrise. Limited to 200 copies.

Galaxy Vol 7: Thelonious Beats Gillespie Edits
Frankie Seay & The Soul Riders - "Soul Food" (Thelonious beat Gillespie edit) (4:34)
Lyn Christopher - "Take Me With You" (Thelonious beat Gillespie edit) (3:28)
Review: If edits are your game then the Galaxy Sound Co is certainly the name. Along other labels like Mukatisuku, these dudes know how to repackage lost and rare soul 7"s, and this new two-headed funk bullet from Thelonious Gillespie is just painfully on target. The first edit is of "Soul Food" by Frankie Seay & The Soul Riders, a moody, dusty percussion bomb brimming with breaks and a grainy guitar accompanied by fine brass waves. Lyn Christopher's "Take Me With You" is pruned and reshaped into a glorious soul ballad with a hard edge, and a driving rhythm led by gliding electronic guitars and an inimitable bassline. Fine work right here.

Jimmy "Bo" Horne - "Hey There Jim" (2:34)
Lynn Williams - "How Can You Call Love Fascination" (2:26)
Review: Jimmy Bo Horne brings his raw and expressive vocals to this new release on Japanese label Ultra Vybe. The oft-sampled America singer, writer and producer has been turning out such sounds since the mid 70s but remains on top of his game here. The big horns bring energy, the rolling rhythm section gets you up on your feet and the whole thing screams floor filler. On the flip is Lynn Williams with 'How Can You Call Love Fascination,' a much more slow and sensual soul tune with acrobatic vocals and nice piano fills next to a big horn section.

Faith (dub) (3:49)
Review: On his previous releases as Booker Gee, Guillaume Metenier has employed his immaculate organ-playing skills over a range of killer funk and soul grooves. Here he flips the script, delivering atmospheric, fluid Hammond solos over some dub-wise reggae grooves played and produced by Spanish multi-instrumentalist Lone Ark (real name Roberto Sanchez). Both Metenier and Sanchez are in fine form on opener 'Auxmites', a bass-heavy head-nodder that sounds like Lee 'Scratch' Perry producing Jimmy Smith. 'Faith' is a little sunnier and warmer, with Metenier's solos working in perfect unison with Sanchez's glistening guitars, jangling pianos and skanking rhythm. Both cuts come accompanied by pleasingly spaced-out Dub revisions courtesy of Sanchez. Top stuff!

Brazilian Singers - "O Telefone Tocou Novamente" (2:56)
Los Belkings - "Septima Partrulla" (2:16)
Review: The Budabeats imprint is a welcomed addition to the funk and soul reissue game, and this third instalment from the label is exactly what we need to be hearing right now - something upbeat, tropical and rare in its original format. On Side A, you got 1971's "O Telefone Tocou Novamente" by the Brazilian Singers, and it's a wavy, magical psych-funk bombshell in the same vein as Marcos Valle's best work. On the flip, there's a special surf-rock-inspired song by Peru's Los Belkings and, yes, it's from 1969 and still sounding like a total monster almost forty years later. Recommended!

Review: It might be getting cold and dark and wet here in the UK but music will always be able to transport us to warmer, sunnier, happier climes. And so it is with this new 7", which includes a booklet, from Discodelic. It's a two tracker from Cizana and La Nueva Generation that is flame hot and bristling with energy - Cizana's 'She Sold Her Soul' kicks off with its joyous flutes, hand drums and percussive Latin grooves then La Nueva Generacion slow things down and up the brass with their carnivalesque Afro-funk workout 'Uhru Sasa'.

Review: What could be more exciting for the funk lover in your life (whether that's you or someone else) than an insanely limited-edition, festively themed "45" from famously reliable party-starter DJ Tron and his regular vocalist Luana? If that sets your bells jingling (sorry), we'd suggest diving straight into A-side 'Merry Christmas', a veritable yuletide feast of boisterous drum-breaks, gravelly guitar riffs, rising horns and sleigh bells, all topped off by a few choice samples and another superb lead vocal from Luana. The pair continue on a similar tip on flipside 'Santa's Coming', a funk-breaks masterclass dedicated to the jolly, chimney-bothering present delivery guy. Only 95 of these hand-numbered sevens were ever pressed, so act fast if you want to grab a copy.

Originally recorded in 2004, 'Loving You Is All I Wanna Do' appeared on the Luv's Fire CD Maxi Single and later on a full album in 2006 through Coastal Records but now debut on vinyl thanks to Soul Direction. Jungle Groove (Lego re-edit) (5:27)
Review: The Italian disco dons at Legofunk have another couple of belters for us here. As usual, both sides of this 7" feature an edit. The first is by Hansi who flips the well known 'It's Just Begun' into a driving and funky rhythm with rolling bass. It's a chunky one that never lets up. On the reverse, 'Jungle Groove' gets a re-edit from the in house Lego team and it becomes a loopy affair that teases the drop for ages. When it comes, big chords and raw, yelping vocals add extra fuel to the fire. Both are highly impactful.

They all hail from Italy and Argentina and are editing originals that span disco, electro, proto-house and more. Hararis' 'Si No Pagan' is the first under the scalpel and is a funky cut with raw drums. Review: The new joint on Wildcards comes from a hornsman sometimes known as Lucky Brown, sometimes as plain old Joel Ricci. He's done plenty of excellent work in the past, but after a few quiet years he's back in the saddle and this new single really takes the cake. 'A Thing Of Beauty' is a lilting slice of instrumental funk which lets Ricci's playing soar, and it's all rendered with a dusty, red-lining charm which will make it all the hotter in the dance as well as appealing to crate diggers hankering for more hot n' heavy grooves to sample. Speaking of which, the flip 'Drums Of Beauty' gives you breaks for days - B-boys and B-girls take heed.

Review: Presented on brown vinyl in limited qualities, the latest release from Swiss studio-turned-label That's Why Records brings together two tracks from close friends of the family - extended studio collective members Kingdom of Kaffa and Laserwolf. The former handles side A, delivering the hazy, pared-back, analogue-rich goodness of 'Yejero Tilli': a largely instrumental slab of Ethio-funk based around polyrhythmic drums, spacey Moog sounds, occasional horn blasts and a particularly addictive clipped guitar riff. Laserwolf takes over on the reverse side, offering their own recording of the same composition. Their interpretation, 'Way To Amiyo (Yejero Tilli Part 2)' is even more spacey, with waves of analogue synths and gnarled psych-rock guitars sparring atop a cosmic disco-influenced groove.

It's reissued here, firstly with 'Satan In Love', which drips with sensuousness thanks to her airy vocal and the squelchy bass. The loose drum rotations also leave lots fo space for you to fall into and as she soundtracks moments of personal pleasure you can't help but be taken along for the ride. Review: You've probably never thought that you need Cumbia cover versions of classic disco numbers in your life, but as this excellent seven-inch single from Vampi Soul proves, you really do. La Cumba Moderna De Soledad handles side A, delivering an inspired re-imagining of Rod Stewart number 'Do Ya Think I'm Sexy' which brilliantly wraps a Spanish translation of the track's familiar lyrics and snake charmer melodies around a typically chunky, club-ready cumbia groove. Arguably even better is Machuca Cumbia's flipside interpretation of Bee-Gees classic 'Staying Alive'. While it's instantly recognisable thanks to the guitar riffs and replayed melodies, their cumbia version is thrillingly psychedelic and undeniably tropical.

It is the sort of soaring, glossy, and lush disco sound that defined the ear. Elements of Latin, funk and jazz all inform the fiery a-side which also has some rich horns and red hot drums, bass and pianos adding to the intensity. The flip side version still has an organic vibe like the original but with a new intro and outro that have their own flavour.

Review: The Matasuna label takes us on superb worldly travels once more with this fresh new 7". Specifically, it is to Mexico and the north of the country for musical epicentre Monterrey. La Tribu laid down this 'No Te Quiero Mas (I Don't Want You More)' tune on Polydor in 1971. It is a sun kissed, action packed Latin soul jam big with those who know and packed with dance floor energy. This is the first ever official reissue and it is backed by a fabulous edit by Voodoocuts.

The Labrats - "Boom Boom" (3:09)
Curtis Baker & The Bravehearts - "Midnight In Memphis" (3:11)
Review: More nostalgic but on-point fare from producer Neil Anderson and his Original Gravity label, this time via an ultra-limited seven-inch single featuring two fuzzy slabs of revivalist rhythm and blues. The Labrats kick things off via a righteous and occasionally raucous cover of John Lee Hooker classic 'Boom Boom', where gnarled, Chuck Berry style guitar solos and gravelly vocals rise above a tooled-up but nevertheless faithful rendition of the much-loved song. Over on the flip, Curtis Baker and the Bravehearts breeze their way through a bluesy Anderson original, the slow-motion R&B grooves, razor-sharp blues guitars and extended organ solos of 'Midnight in Memphis'.

Review: Everyone's favourite Jack of all trades unleashes another dynamic doublet from his latest album for some cheeky 45 thrills. "Take It Up A Notch" turns a block party into a blockbuster with serious Ugly Duckling style flows from longstanding collaborators Herbal T & Wax while "Back To The Day" takes us straight to the boudoir with some gorgeous honey dulcets from Elliot Cole and on a bed made of LOA's slinkiest soul grooves. We're notch worthy.

Review: Lack Of Afro (aka Adam Gibbons), returns once more with a hard hitting slice of dancefloor magic. His debut single "Wait A Minute" turned heads around the globe with a wide array of DJ's charting it as well as picking up plays on Radio 1. In a similar vein, but this time taking it's cues from Latin funk, "Roderigo" is a stomping, horn led dancefloor monster - once again illustrating the unique production style of this young producer and giving another indication of what's to come.

Clean Living Under Difficult Circumstances
Review: Neo soul evangelist Adam Gibbons - aka Lack Of Afro - is back with the euphoric, cathartic release of "Freedom", a retro jam that totally evokes the hazy Easy Rider age of American funk rock, featuring the talents of Jack Tyson-Charles. "Clean Living Under Difficult Circumstances" meanwhile is a riot of Blow Up-era Swinging Sixties vintage funk - both cuts are highly recommended.

Good Lovin (DJ Spinna Old School acid remix)
Good Lovin (Oh No remix)
Good Lovin (T&S HLIC remix)
Review: Nicole Wray's Lady outfit undergoes a trio of remixes; Each one adding a whole new dynamic to the instant sing-along modern disco gem. DJ Spinna goes for a classic late 80s bump-n-shuffle remix with a squidgy 808 bassline and strutting beats. Oh No adds a lavish percussive arrangement giving it the same flavour Quantic gets when he works with Alice Russell. Finally T&S look back to Motown for inspiration as we're teased with dramatic cinematic orchestration before a big funk riff flies into the mix. Drop any of these versions and you're guaranteed good dancefloor loving.

Review: The Lahaar is a Trans-Tasman collaboration between Julien Dyne, Horatio Luna and Surprise Chef's Lachlan Stuckey, featuring Mara TK and Toby Laing on vocals. Channeling a heady cocktail of inspirations from New York to Lagos, the supergroup easily moves through different styles in quick succession, from uptempo boogie to mega-ploddy dub. Seguing between original bangers and exploitation movie library music, the EP closes on the riveting 'Chase Scene (Part 1)', which casts evadign tjhe law in a surprisingly emotive light.

Review: This is one of those disco holy grails that doesn't even need to convince you of its worth, and its no surprise original copies have been so coveted for so long. Chicago's Magic Touch label was a low key affair, but jams like this ensure its impact remains strong to this day as LaJohn and Sheela lay down the feeling in no uncertain terms. 'Too Far Gone' is a smouldering, bittersweet track which deserves to reach as many soulful heads as possible, so this tasty remaster courtesy of Numero couldn't come soon enough.

Vito Lalinga is the man behind it and his 'Yesaye' kicks off with some lush feel good sounds, warming chords and busy rhythms made from acoustic guitars. Review: Freestyle Records continues to be an essential source for visionary funk and soul from across the globe, and now they're returning to recent signing Lance Ferguson and his Rare Groove Spectrum. This 12" carries some remixes and rarities that complement Ferguson's self-titled album from earlier this year. Things kick off with Alex Attias' dreamy, Latin-tinged edit of "Sweet Power, Your Embrace" before the original "8 Counts For Rita" bursts forth in a flurry of trumpets and salsa piano. "The Blessing Song" gets remix treatment from Flow Lab Kid, and then Ferguson tackles a cover of The Blackbyrds' "Blackbyrds Theme", all of which have the next level funk chops Ferguson has displayed elsewhere in his burgeoning repertoire.

Leigh Ann's Dance
Review: Parenthe Seizure, released on Counterpoint, features Sheila Landis, who has been a vital part of the Detroit jazz scene since 1973. She performs her unique style of vocal jazz and lends her distinctive voice to a wide variety of musical settings. She sings without artifice or gimmick, and her delivery is honest and direct. Landis approaches the music as if she's a horn player, and uses her voice to entice and enliven. Influenced by a wide variety of vocalists, from Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae and Betty Carter to Joni Mitchell and Aretha Franklin, she has absorbed these and other influences, filtered them through her own sensibility, and distilled from them her own unique sound.
