Worlds Apart (4:45)
Review: Following his soundtrack to the Roki game and appearances on the likes of Monstercat, Aether returns to his spiritual home Fent Plates for the first time since 2017. The wait has of course been worth it as 'Fragments' takes us back to the Scottish deepsmith's finest elements; stirring, poignant chords, foggy, disarming textures long lingering-but-tender notes. From the opening airy pads and trembling keys of 'Luna Awaits' to the final slo-mo plod and echo of the finale 'Worlds Apart', it's Aether doing what he does best; conjuring up emotions you didn't even know you were feeling while making you feel like you're in an impenetrable bubble. Beautiful.

Your Eyes (5:00)
Crippling (4:38)
Eight Times Eight (5:39)
Riverwind (4:04)
Review: Coming up on Innamind, Killa Sound and Moonshine Recordings, Ago has been flying the flag for soundsystem innovation in the scene where dubstep still pushes forwards and the connection to traditional dub values remains at the forefront of the practice. It makes perfect sense he's now been snapped up by V.I.V.E.K's System label then and he arrives on the label with four outstanding cuts pushing at typical 140 forms and offering something wholly unique. 'Your Eyes' keeps plenty of space in the half-step rhythm, but the springy synth out front runs with an urgent double time which elevates the impact of the track. 'Crippling' is a more claustrophobic pressure cooker, while 'Eight Times Eight' turns out a leftfield strain of steppas before 'Riverwind's techy propulsion brings the record home in outstanding fashion.

Clay Figures (7:04)
Review: Japanese artist Hirotaka Umetani serves up four club ready joints here all though a rather distinctive UK bass lens. The Albino Sound EP on Turnend Tapes finds him "translating visual into sound through his own experience. The sound designs is immense, from crystalline leads to hallucinatory synths, tiny bits of sonic grit to perfect designed drums. The rhythms are inventive and minimal to make for hi fidelity and frusta techno that wouldn't sound out of place on Livity Sound. 'Jarring' might be the standout with its twisted metals and tribal percussion over a hefty groove.

LCP - "Off Limits" (5:22)
Books - "Cosine" (4:57)
Review: Fresh off the back of Cryptographic's intense 'Echo' release comes this fitting V/A from the ever-intriguing Swiss experimental 170 label Re:st. Music to realign our Covid-ravaged chakras to 'Re:align' introduces three new names to the label; Alternate Current steams out of the gates with a dub techno juggernaut 'Borrowed Language' while Dreadmaul & Tobe:n whip a rhythmic stampede that's screaming to be unleashed on a big system with 'Homunculus'. Flip for two slightly more cosmic tales as label founder LCP gently pats us down with the trickling lolloping loops of 'Off Limits' before Books signs us out with the sparse and skippy 'Cosine'. Refine your alignments.

Review: German stalwart Amor Satyr returns with his signature blend of techno, ambient, and industrial, throwing out yet another four hardcore units for his frequent label Seilscheibenpfeiler Schallplatten. Dark weighty breakbeat asserts its brunt on 'Transfer', slowly morphing into booty bass on 'Quer Dancar' and watery Baile-echoes on 'Bebe'.

Review: Sexapil duo Amor Satyr and Siu Mata apply the breaks for this powerful new edition for Hardline Sounds. 'Lights Off' sets the scene with a tense set of percussive breaks that roll out like a Suba jam and give us a handy hint at keeping fuel bills low. It's in good company; 'Aquarius' is the ultimate power tool that chugs and cuts in all directions, 'AHE' flips from cosmic halftime into an all-out drum ensemble while 'Psychic Water' takes us deep under the surface of the ocean for a subaquatic rave of our dreams. Bubbling.

Other Side Of The Sky (Appleblim remix) (6:17)
Review: Fresh from his excellent ebm-influenced debut album, UK producer Julian 'October' Smith October looks to a more reflective approach. Working with his long-term collaborator and fellow Bristolian Appleblim, he lays down an lurching, acid-soaked bass and jittery drums on "Other Side of the Sky". These elements complement the melodic chord sequence that flutter their way through the arrangement. On the flip side, Appleblim delivers a remix; retaining the mellow chords but replacing the backing with a stepping, dub-wise rhythm, it makes for a gloriously blissed out take on the dance floor-based original version.

Analyze, Socialize (5:13)
Review: James Bangura steps into the ring with his new Shadow Boxing EP which is named in honour of his grandfather, Carroll Daniel Smith, who boxed for the US Army in WWII. It's a punchy take on tech house from the off, with 'Hazy Recall (Airdrop mix)''s off-grid beats swinging in from all directions with same the potency as a Mike Tyson uppercut. 'Drown It Out' has a garage swing to it as it slips and sides as fluidly as Mayweather's defence and 'Shadow Boxing' floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee. Last of all is 'Analyze, Socialize' which will have you on the ropes and sweating in no time.

Review: His first new material as Basic Rhythm since his 2017 album The Basics, the London artist known as East Man steps over to Warp offshoot Arcola for two heady dancefloor slap-abouts. "Dough Boy" is a beautiful magpie of a track that comprises classic jungle pads, a naughty LFO style bassline and Art Of Noise-style talking keyboard notes while "Can't You See" slows the rave right down and strips the vibe right back to its emotional, naked essentials. With an EP on Sneakers Social Club coming up soon too, it's a great time to be a Basic Rhythm fan right now.

Review: Batu has long been in a class of one when it comes to crafting meticulously hi finely rhythms and sounds. He now steps out to launch his own new label A Long Strange Dream, with a five track EP that runs the stylistic gamut from ambient to raw and futurist techno. Churning bass and hefty hits one up 'Traverse' which rides on a menacing bassline and is action packed from front to back. 'In Tongues' is a thumping technoid banger and 'For Spirits' is a wild rhythmic work out with disrupted low ends and groaning synths. 'Through The Glass' is the Beatles closer that allows you to catch your breath.

Texers
Review: Rapidly ripping it up with a mission to bring some proper dread back to the convoluted hinterland around what used to be dubstep, Beneath has been showing some deadly skill on No Symbols and Keysound, and now he gets snapped up by Pinch to bring it on home to the perfect label for such deadly accuracy, Tectonic. "Duty" wastes no time in whipping into a low slung 4/4 roll defined by a gut-wrenching bottom end while all manner of panic-inducing industrial textures come slamming in around it. Far from the monochrome results so many achieve with such a sound palette, there is a serious dynamism in the rhythm Beneath creates, only built upon with "Texers" as dystopian whiffs of melody try to enter the fray in a more whip-cracking broken beat template.

Review: Current go-to-man for the UK underground, Beneath follows up some high profile releases on PAN and his own No Symbols imprint, with a new one on Berceuse Heroique featuring some typically beaten down but forward thinking perspectives of the dancefloor. First up "50/50" and its snarling acid work out faces off with a broken beat off set by serene atmospherics. "Freeze" is next with its funky and disjointed rhythm taking a more minimalist approach to showcase that A1 bassline and sultry kick ass rhythm. "Soho" with its sheer futurism merges reliable dancefloor dynamics with cleverly executed sound design, then wait for the drop! Finally "Future Shock" pays homage to his dubstep roots with a dirty exploration of sub-bass dynamics complete with haunting yet exotic string accompaniment.

Triple S (El-B remix) (4:36)
Review: UKG and dubstep originator Benny Ill launches Good 4 Ya with two exceptional originals and two equally heavyweight remixers. "Sugar" is as sweet as it sounds; spacious, laced with Chicago style house chords and a sexy sense of hypnosis before man like Zed Bias enters the fray and murks up the groove with a 2001-era squelchy bass and a bit of crushed break for good measure. Flip for the horsepowered 4x4 jam "Triple S". Thumping relentlessly into the light with more US-flavoured synth work, it's a tune you could just as easily imagine in Shelter back in the early 90s as you could in FWD in the early 2000s and any era since. The mighty El-B closes the show with more of a darker two-step twist while retaining the jazzy pep of the chords. Four cuts, three bonafide originators, one essential record.

Review: Prolific under a variety of different aliases between them, Italian artists Big Hands and Banishsh continue to push the limits on the latter's new SM000 imprint. Sitting right on the edge of a variety of genre hinterlands, there are notes of jungle, dub, techno and IDM running throughout. Big Hands' 'SWGGN' vibes with the most upbeat feeling and flow while Banishsh's 'OP' version hits with much more of a dancehall bounce and sense of bass tension and the '55' deconstructs and dubs things out even more. Stark behaviours.

He's done it all from heft, swinging bass to the most caustic and experimental techno. For this one on XL he aims at the club once more. 'Fires' is our pick - an unrelenting, tightly stacked rhythm with alluring vocal hooks swirling up top and weird synth sounds adding even more unusualness.

Review: Nonplus head Boddika makes a triumphant return to Swamp 81 label with the four-track doublepack Steam. Loefah's label have been somewhat quiet of late; perhaps opting to put more energy into the house-focused School imprint, whilst Boddika has also been keeping a low profile, with the flurry of collaborations with Joy Orbison last year evidently giving way due to taking over the reins of the Nonplus label and overseeing its mammoth Think & Change compilation. The presence of this four track double plater is welcome then and the tracks will be familiar to those who keep a close eye on the producer's movements, with "Steam" and "Black" ripped to YouTube back in early 2012 and "Crack" appearing later last year; only "Heat" is comparatively recent. As is to be expected with Boddika, the four tracks occupy the weighty end of the bass-techno intersection.

'All I Want' kicks off t with its warped bass and precise drum programming while the title track features fluid synths and a pitched-up r&b vocal sample that creates a compelling hook. Elsewhere, the likes of 'Reforma' merges jungle, techno, and bass into a dynamic rhythmic journey, while 'LFO2' is another heart of the rave gem amongst many more potent weapons.

Review: With its' hilarious, capitol-baiting MC vocal sample (lifted, it seems from an obscure early '90s rave recording), Borai's "Anybody From London" has already achieved anthem status in Bristol. It's a perfect example of contemporary, hardcore-influenced house, with spine-tingling chords riding a killer bassline and a pitched-down break peppered with classic jungle style drum edits. There's much to enjoy elsewhere on the double-pack, too, from the jungle-techno stomp of "The Seeeker" and the woozy, hip-house style roll of "OHM Trax", to the heady hardcore revivalism of the wide-eyed, "At Les"-biting "Never As Good". It's something of a departure from Borai - arguably best known for his deep house and techno outings - but undoubtedly his strongest release to date.

Review: Long dormant has laid the tried but true practice of dubstep and garage artists sampling classic horror movie dialogue, pre-drop. We're thoroughly happy to hear that new Peaky Beats sublabel Brainjuice have gone and resurrected this zombie for us. This four-tracker from the label hears label heads Peaky and Vel carefully and creatively work in as-yet unknown samples to the stew; some kind of Frankensteinish exclamation on the dubstep A1 laments the feeding of a monster "human brains", while the breakstep A2 'Bacon Dance' hears more timestretched, dystopian vocals amid wobbles. 'Don't' leans more into the kind of melodic dubstep that likes to sample R&B acapellas, and is the most refreshing of the lot.

Review: Brother Aten debuts on Bruk with a minimalist masterpiece featuring the detached vocals of Ze R. This tidy 10" is influenced by cult sci-fi and early 80s no wave so naturally presents a stark, synthetic soundscape devoid of excess. The title reflects its mood: Aten's mechanical mantras are crafted with precision on outboard instruments and explore gritty, futuristic worlds. On 'Unavailable,' resonant drones create a platform for Ze R.'s initial deadpan delivery which reveals deeper humanity as the track unfurls through crisp drums. The brief yet impactful two-parter, 'Fragmented Dystopia' is a taste of Aten's cyberpunk vision while Ze R.'s words oscillate between structure and chaos.

Gloam
Snowdrift
Review: Buckley - not be confused with the UK house veteran of the same name - is a new young producer from Leeds who brings his brand of UK garage to the increasingly vital Well Street label.
