The Unreleased Funky Instrumentals Vol 2
Cat: DAVID 002. Rel: 05 May 25

Funk
Sound & Vision (unreleased instrumental)
Young Americans (unreleased instrumental)
Review: This newly formed and already brilliant label is back with more previously unreleased instrumentals that bring a different twist and dancefloor edge to classic sounds from the rock and indie world. First up we get a subtle edit of 'Sound and Vision' which has a nice fat and funky bassline bouncing beneath the splashy drums as nice acoustic guitar melodies ring out next to glistening retro-future pads. It's a cosmic trip that oozes soul then things slow down on the flip with 'Young Americans'. This one is a nice go-slow instrumental with funky and expressive horn work taking the lead over the fat-bottomed drums and bass.

Don't Stop (6:47)
Review: Burnski's Constant Sound is very nearly at 50 releases and not one of them has ever dipped below essential levels of quality. Kepler has been a regular contributor to this fine catalogue and returns with more of his shuffling, playful and charming garage cuts. 'Recall' manages to be both deep and driving, with cute chord stabs and a smart vocal sample that adds the r&b gloss. 'Flavour' has those old school stabs and filthy basslines and 'Loft Groove' is a bouncy, low-slung number with organic percussion. Closing out another high-grade offering is 'Don't Stop' which brings some dubby chords to a slick, punchy house rhythm. Pure class.

Mind Illusion (6:43)

Space Talk (5:51)
Review: Haws opens the year with Mind Illusion, a rich four-tracker from Vince Void that bridges early 90s progressive house with a modern sensibility. From the cinematic opener to the dreamy closer, Void crafts a narrative of time's fluidity as past, present and future all blur into one. 'Mind Illusion' and 'Transmissions' soar with nostalgic optimism and lush pads, while 'Revival' slows into intimate introspection and echoes themes of healing. 'Space Talk' closes with mellow acid touches and hazy atmospheres. Rather than rushing forward, Mind Illusion invites reflection and proves that harmony is found in quiet momentum.

Review: Phil Evans' second album follows a series of standout EPs on Blankstate, Sensual, Twig, Vigenere and his own Pager Records; the Frankfurt DJ and producer doubles as the Freizeit Records co-founder of Pager, helping set in e-motion the evolution of his local underground electronic scene. With minimality at its core, we hear on E Motinos a reserved and calculated three tracks per vinyl side, preserving optimal, skipless groove quality: 'Eazin', '<3', 'Hm' and 'Deep' prefer a near nonverbal titular expressivity, resisting any reference to the record's tricky, body-jacking movements in any capacity except through body language.

Review: 2002’s Hooverphonic Presents Jackie Cane always felt like the odd jewel in the Belgian outfit's catalogue — part concept album, part theatrical detour, wrapped in lush strings and Bond-theme bravado. The 2025 reissue brings it back into focus, and it’s certainly worth revisiting. There’s drama — torch songs, twisted pop, and trip-hop filtered through a cinematic lens — but also a tangible sense of melancholy beneath. Tracks like 'Sometimes' and 'Human Interest' still land with weight, while the nocturnal psychedelia of 'Jackie’s Delirium' and 'Shampoo' adds hallucinogenic depth to the collection. It’s all very stylised, but that’s part of the charm. You can hear the ambition, the restlessness. Not quite cool, not quite kitsch, but somehow it works.

Review: Calling the curtain on Field Records' Waterworks trilogy, Yui Onodera turns his ear to confluences of hydrology and history, dedicating his latest record to Japan's Kiso Three Rivers and their transformation by 19th-century Dutch engineering. The Kiso, Nagara and Ibi rivers, once prone to catastrophic flooding, were reshaped under the guidance of Johannes de Rijke, whose work helped protect Nagoya from seasonal deluge by 1912. Onodera, known for his nuanced sound architecture, approaches this subject with a finely honed ear for subtlety, layering quiet field recordings with fuller instrumentation, evoking the widening of a river from brook to strait. The A-side's bell tones provide a sensory-meridian intimacy, processed alongside guitar, and ethereal pads; while the B-side's contradictorily colossal quietude makes itself across two long-form studies, which drift through sampled water and restrained electronics.

Review: By 1973, Soul Media, formed in Tokyo by saxophonist Jiro Inagaki, had spent a good many years blurring the lines of jazz and rock, of course in what we Westerners would interpret as distinctive “J import” style. With In the Groove, their studio output took a decisive leap, injecting a tighter funk sensibility into an already well oiled jazz membrane. Refusing to mimic the overseas jazz-funk scene, Inagaki and his band offered their own take: confident, dynamic and layered with a distinctly Japanese stance on groove and arrangement. The Crusaders’ influence looms large, where Inagaki was closely following their evolution. But this isn’t aphonic pastiche; the record finds its own voice in its interplays of brass and rhythm, with ‘That’s How I Feel’ causing a slow trickle then downpour of funktastic piano-funk flections to come, such as ‘Joie De Vivre’, ‘Papa Hooper’s Barrel House Groove’ and the brilliantly corvine ‘Raven Speaks’.

Kapi Ngalyananni
Review: From Papunya in the Northern Territory, Luritja artist Keanu Nelson returns with a new two-track 7”, produced in collaboration with Sydney’s Yuta Matsumura. It’s a continuation of their distinct blend of desert-rooted storytelling and homespun electronics. ‘Place Where I Go’ merges YouTube-era hip-hop with dubbed-out textures and plaintive piano, Nelson’s voice diaristic and close. ‘Kapi Ngalyananni’, sung in Luritja, is a water song laced with clapsticks, parched melodica and ghostly pads. Grounded in Central Australia and shaped with minimal means, these tracks shimmer with spirit and quiet clarity, holding space for both the ancestral and the everyday.

Review: By following in the footsteps of the mighty Giles Martin, who remastered The Beatles' Abbey Road at Abbey Road Studios, Martha Wainwright has achieved a spine-tinglingly great sound in the fabled North London institution on this 20th anniversary remaster. The mixes are so strong that it leaves you free to listen to the majesty of the arrangements and undeniable beauty of her voice, without any pangs that you can get from bad sound design. There are some songwriters who will live on long after they're gone and this Montrealer is clearly one of them. 'Far Away' has gorgeous melodies plump in the song like a pineapple tree ripe for picking. 'Don't Forget' has a bit of a Laura Marling feel and it feels like it pays homage to bluegrass traditions where people would sit around a camp fire and intimately tell their most important life stories, whilst comfortably deflecting from any sadness with an uplifting musical passage. And if anyone was to hum their life story to us, few come higher up the bucket list than Martha Wainwright.

Silver Lines
Review: Cologne's Jonathan Kaspar has a rare talent for making techno feel emotional without sacrificing power. On this latest pair, he brings the same intensity and balance you'd expect from someone fully in command of his sound i a producer with roots in Germany's fertile minimal scene, but an ear turned towards something more transcendent. 'Yah' is an absolute hypnosis engine, with spectral sirens gliding above steadily rolling percussion. The track breaks and bends but never falls apart i there's a sense of near-chaos that's tightly held in place by Kaspar's meticulous control. On the flip, 'Silver Lines' arrives like a whisper before slicing the calm wide open. A swelling filter turns a simple synth sequence into something emotionally urgent, anchoring the track's shift from lull to lockdown. Kaspar, like a certain Vegas-showman r&b titan, knows how to be theatrical without losing himself i and here, it shows.

'Yah' opens with hypnotic percussion and spectral tones that build toward a powerful, immersive climax while never losing its deep, driving groove. On the flip, 'Silver Lines' offers a contrasting atmosphere, starting minimal and serene before gradually tightening its grip with a filtered synth sequence that transforms tranquillity into tension. Kaspar weaves trance-tinged textures and progressive structures into these jams, which reflect a nice bit of evolution.

This outing on Helena Hauff's Return To Disorder is a twisted and acerbic collision of breaks, electro and UK rave. 'Cruising' has alarm sounds and blistering synth textures running through saw-tooth bass and big breaks. 'PIGMENTOR' is all acidic and chuggy while 'The Looper" is heads down, feet marching electro-techno. 'Good Bye' brings some electrified disco futurism to the party for a more colourful and outwardly expressive closer.

Review: French DJ, producer and multi-instrumentalist Olivier Portal sadly passed away in January, aged 65. His best work came as Playin 4 The City and this EP is one of his most sought-after on the Plastik People label. It features two tracks originally released on the 'Backshop' EP on Tropism Records 2002 and one newer sound. Opener 'Minor Track' is a brilliantly aloof deep house cut with swinging, dubby drums and cute chord stabs that do enough to keep you moving. 'Backfire' is just as breezy but a little quicker with some sleek synths and nice claps moving things on with a cosmic edge. 'Backside' rides a nice chunky, tumbling rhythm with more subtle but seductive synth work.

Review: Perro Bueno Edits has been behind some much-sought-after edit releases in recent times and this one is another of the same. The fifth entry in the cult series again looks to unearth rare Afro disco gems and rework them with precision and soul. On Side A, 'AMDS' is a hypnotic cut with a rolling bassline that radiates warmth as the original is respectfully reimagined with sharp edits and an extended arrangement built for movement. The B-side is a spiritual stunner that melds heartfelt vocals with layered rhythms and dreamy keys to back the soulful vocal. Music Is Making Me High
Review: Thirty years deep and still pushing forward, this Dutch producer shows no sign of losing steam. His latest batch leans into jazzy house with a fresh, unforced confidence. These tracks feel lived-in but never tired, like the work of someone who knows the rules well enough to bend them just right. 'Peace & Justice' starts with a bright tempo and a wide-open groove. There's a raw exuberance in the percussion and keys that feels completely unselfconscious, like it's meant to be played loud with people moving. 'Needs' pulls things in a bit tighter. The rhythm snaps into place around crisp drums, jazzy chord stabs and vocal snippets that feel tossed-off but perfectly placed. It's one of those tracks that sneaks into your head and stays there. On the flip, 'Lust In Love' gets a little grimier. The groove is thicker and feels like it was made to echo through a late-night system. It’s confident without being pushy, letting the bassline do most of the talking. Wrapping things up, 'Music Is Making Me High' brings in soulful touches and breezy jazz accents. It's easygoing but still aimed at the dancefloor. Overall, a smooth, smart ride all the way through.

Featuring tracks by both Anna Tsuchiya and Olivia Lufkin, who voice acted Nana Osaki and Reira Serizawa respectively, Nana Komatsu and Nana Osaki's story is retold through the beloved anime OST, whose source series unfolds as a moving exploration of friendship, ambition, heartbreak, and independence. This new vinyl edition pulls a drawstring on the most celebrated soundtrack bits from the original Best CD release, pursing the emotional highs and lows that defined the series. Pressed to vinyl for the first time, it also features a laser-etched engraving for an added visual flourish.

Review: Waves Within is a genre-blending triumph from Mexican producers Luca Ferrand and Selva in which they serve up sounds that evolve through deep house, broken beat, jazz, nu-disco and hip-hop. Opener 'Bona Fide' pairs dusty jazz and disco-house with a slick hip-hop switch and some superbly sunny melodies. 'Zarapes (After the Rain)' marries Mexican folk and broken beat, then 'Back To That Thang' twists jazz guitar into a genre-fluid ride and the title track evokes tropical 90s house. Closer 'Lynx' is a shapeshifting house cut with bulbous bass and sophisticated sound design that really brings it to life.

Review: After the relative commercial un-success of their debut Whole Oats, Hall & Oates relocated to the Big Apple to record 1973's Abandoned Luncheonette, marking the start of their New York chapter, which perhaps artistically expressed their own debutant dismay. Produced by Arif Mardin, and in a rightly disgruntled fashion, the duo sought to distance themselves from commercial formulae, honing a unique sound that would later prove non-fungible. Keeping close to the pair's American roots, Mardin played a crucial role, and under his guidance, H&O would call the production process a vital learning experience. The second side of the record is notable for its guitarist Chris Bond's Beatles-inspired ideas, which he would later express as a regretful choice, as it deviated substantially from H&O's vision. But this is an overall "magical" record, as expressed by the duo themselves.

Review: At A Glance Records is a sister label to Small Great Things and made a fine start to life with its first EP. This second one comes from Belgian producer UC Beatz who has proven himself adept at emotive textures and groove-driven disco-house. He shows that again with a deep, soulful offering with immersive storytelling as well as dance floor heft. There are loose limbed rhythms on 'Life Of A Painter', shiny disco loops on 'Life Of A Painter' and romantic vibes to the summery 'Luv Walkin''. 'Mimes' shuts down with some chunky drums, screwed synths and chopped vocals.

Review: Arthur Fiedler's long tenure with the Boston Pops produced a vast archive of recordings, many leaning into fan-serving territory, but this collection proves the orchestra's range extended far beyond light classical fare. Here, Prokofiev's 'Three Oranges Suite' gets a full wax treatment, moving well beyond its often-isolated 'March' into the suite's other vivid vignettes. The rearrangement of 'Les Sylphides' tiptoes between charm and kitsch, while Liszt's symphonic poems receive unexpectedly muscular renderings. 'Mazeppa' bursts with theatric flair, while 'Les Preludes' is approached with drive and precision, opposing overcooked symbolism. Fiedler's flair for drama never came at the expense of control, and this set captures a conductor who bridged populism and classical heft with confidence.

Smart dual-function generator - 6HP
Notes: Thererec is a 6hp smart dual-function generator based on a different approach! Two modern proximity sensors have replaced all the Attack/Decay thing, and this not only saved a lot of space but also turned Thererec into a whole new thing: a fusion between THEREmin gestural expressiveness and a tape RECorder,

Thererec, indeed, can quickly capture your hand movements and translate them into complex Envelopes and LFOs, adding a lot of expressiveness to your set. Once recorded, your movements can be mangled in both time and amplitude; they can be cycled or triggered in one-shot mode, letting you create complex but synchronized control voltage streams.

A straightforward movement with immediate feedback: move your fingers, listen, and connect yourself to the environment. Your body will do the rest.

Thererec sensors will track your movements to generate a voltage flow, and the LEDs and the CV outputs will reflect those movements.

Greatest Hits

Rock
Review: There's not many musicians who embody the sound of American rock 'n' roll as much as Bob Seger does. From the brooding introspection of 'Turn the Page' to the anthemic uplift of 'Like a Rock', this package of hits traverses decades of deeply resonant, unpretentious storytelling set to thundering drums and searing guitar. This greatest hits makes a powerful return on vinyl, pressed impeccably and sounding every bit as raw and soulful as the legacy it encapsulates. What sets Seger apart is his ability to merge working-class grit with melodic muscle. 'Night Moves' remains one of rock's most poignant coming-of-age narratives, while 'Against the Wind' offers quiet rebellion with a wistful heart. Even lighter tracks like 'Old Time Rock and Roll' bristle with conviction and energy, showing Seger's deep reverence for the roots of the genre. Comparisons to Springsteen and Van Morrison are natural, but while Seger's characters and cadences echo theirs, his brand of rustbelt rock is its own breed: proud, grounded and radiantly human. Back on vinyl and sounding terrific with its analogue warmth, it's quikcly clear why this compilation became the best-selling catalogue album of its decade.

Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams
Review: A striking departure from the classic piano-bass-drums format, this 1962 session brings together a rare quintet configuration, weaving trumpet and guitar into the fabric of post-bop elegance all based around New Jersey-born pianist Evans. The interplay is both literal and musical between the musicians. With trumpet lines that alternate between burnished lyricism and bursts of fire and guitar passages that glide with subtle precision, the ensemble creates a sound that is both spacious and tightly knit. The repertoire leans into standards, yet each tune is rendered with a fresh rhythmic spark and harmonic sophistication. 'I'll Never Smile Again' shimmers with wistful melancholy, while 'When You Wish Upon a Star' is recast with a gentle yet cerebral charm. Fans of more intimate trio settings might initially find the added instrumentation unfamiliar, but there's an undeniable allure in the expanded sonic palette. The drummer drives the group with crisp energy while the bassist anchors with subtle authority and the collective chemistry elevates the session beyond typical quintet fare. This is a bold, beautiful detour in the legacy of modern jazz and one that rewards the listener. A reissue worth revisiting, or discovering anew.

Review: This clear wax edition feels like an invitation into Worcestershire-born global traveller Will Holland's inner circle i not just as a selector but as a connector of people, scenes and sonic microhistories. Across the two LPs, his DJing reveals the subtle hand of a musician: textured, tempo-flexible, deeply in tune with the artists he features. JJ Whitefield's 'The Mind Is A Palace' and Alfa Mist's slow-burner 'In My Defence' lay the introspective groundwork, while The Heliocentrics and Dialect bring fuzz and abstraction into view. Side B pivots to percussive warmth, from JKriv's whistle-led 'Pifeiro Malandro' to Holland's own dusty 'Twang', before the humid swagger of Frente Cumbiero and a tripped-out remix of 'Theme From Selva' usher in Side C. Things then spiral toward the club, with 'Eko Eko', 'Throw Dat Azz' and 'Scintille' all bringing punch and release. The final stretch, featuring The Maghreban, Meridian Brothers and Sobredosis, casts a glowing ambiguity over the mix i just like Holland's sets, it ends not in resolution, but in feeling.

Revisiting Bobby O's production 'Love Is The Drug' for Roni Griffith's 1982 hit, Ellis transforms the original into a shimmering blend of Italectro and funk-driven electrobass, a proto-freestyle fandango filtered through Ellis' signature analog sensibility. A high-gloss, synth-laced homage results on orange gamboge vinyl; a replenishing source of sunny sonic vitamin D.

Review: Gold polygon masked producer (only the best of them wear them) Satin Jackets returns with a laid-back blend of lush grooves and breezy melodies, perfectly attuned for moments of ease and escape. Drawing from a string of singles released over recent years since 2010 for the likes of Nu Indee and Eskimo, Cruise Control has an unshakable sense of atmos and rhythm, as a drench of sun washes over each production. The German producer shapes his compositions in solitude before bringing in collaborators who elevate the mood, whether through serendipitous connections with David Bay and Small Black, or the instant spark of a friend's bassline transforming a stuck idea into a standout hook. Listeners often comment on the uplift they feel in his work, and it's clear he prioritises that sense of instant musical chemistry.

Review: A potent ongoing collaboration between two techno heads lands on a legendary label, delivering four cuts that span the spectrum of classic and contemporary dancefloor energy. Side-A kicks off with 'ClickClickClick', a tech house burner that lives up to its name as it is bouncy and rhythmically addictive. Its catchy loop play gives way to deeper, murkier textures midway through, maintaining its infectious swing while offering DJs a perfect mid-set curveball. Following it is 'Gearbox', a slick, electro-informed groover with a low-slung, funky bassline. It's high-energy yet controlled, laced with head-nodding bounce and shimmering detail that make it ideal for peak-time dancefloor action. On Side-B, 'Destination 909' is pure nostalgia with a modern polish, bringing in 90s techno grit, trancey atmospherics and a post-rave euphoria that's all tight kicks and laser-focused execution. The production is clean and sharp, but there's an intentional vintage flavor that pays tribute to the roots. Closing things out is 'Reach Out', a hypnotic, dub-leaning track infused with a raw vocal loop preaching unity and rave authenticity. It's spacious, meditative and subtly anthemic. The kind of track that creeps up on you in the best way. All in all, a cohesive, floor-ready EP.

Calibre (feat Badano)
Review: Somewhere between a rolling terrace session and a very well-behaved afters, Aloque’s second 12” offers a quietly confident take on modern club gear. The Valencia-based label launched with a bang last year — their debut sold out quickly — and now they return with four new tracks from co-founders Vsan & José Martí. If the first record introduced the label’s sound, this one deepens it. ‘Creïlla’ opens the A side with a stripped, percussive groove that unfolds patiently, stitched together with dubby effects and subtle movement. It’s restrained but functional — the sort of track you’ll play more often than you think. ‘You Will (Remaster)’ leans into darker territory: heads-down and system-facing, with a weighty low end and just enough melodic tension to hold your focus. Over on the flip, ‘Stabito’ takes things into smokier, slower territory. Airy stabs drift in and out over a skeleton of drums, soft-edged but purposeful. ‘Calibre (feat Badano)’ closes with more urgency — a focused, dry pulse driving the most direct track on the record. With two sharp 12”s under their belt and a clear sonic identity forming, Aloque sit right at the centre of Valencia’s shifting dance landscape — these records already feel built to move well beyond it.

Review: Originally released in 1976, this landmark outing from Nigeria's Lijadu Sisters marked their first major international push i a radical soul-funk statement laced with political edge. Opening with the bass-heavy swagger of 'Danger', it immediately sets the tone: sharp vocals, warm analogue grit, and tight, hypnotic percussion from a mix of trap drums and traditional Yoruba rhythms. 'Amebo' carries sly social commentary over organ stabs and polyrhythms, while 'Life's Gone Down Low' fuses soul's gospel cadences with simmering Afrobeat grooves i the same track that would later be sampled by Nas. But it's 'Cashing In' that cuts deepest: an indictment of exploitation and capitalist decay wrapped in funk guitar and layered harmony. Producer Biddy Wright's fingerprints are everywhere i from the soft hand percussion to the open mixdown that lets the sisters' vocals soar and slide in perfect unison. This reissue makes clear how far ahead of their time they were, offering an Afro-psychedelic protest record that still rings out with clarity.

Review: Dusky techno disco tools on this fifth new one from Shadow Pressings, a UK outfit who've here nonetheless titularly alluded to the Chicago house scene. Of course, not all of us can afford to fly out to Illinois on a whim, and many of us prefer instead to let the city’s long-release intoxicant effect run its course on the collective ear from a distance. The label-artist here proffers the gruffer stuff, from the grunting percs of ‘Tears’ through to the smoother high piquancies of ‘Lost In The Dance’, both of which nail that irreverent, not-too-much mood innate to all the best dance music.

Review: Across two records, this trimmed-down version plays like the sleekest statement of intent: less a full retrospective, more a distilled transmission from Robert Smith’s inner sanctum. From the moment Paul Oakenfold’s ‘I Can Never Say Goodbye’ rework opens proceedings — lush strings, half-submerged vocals, and a cinematic pace — it’s clear that curation, not just contribution, has shaped the form. Orbital turn ‘Endsong’ into a glistening spiral of sequencers and tension, while Sally C’s raw house take on ‘A Fragile Thing’ ups the pulse without disturbing the gloom. Smith — still unmistakably the same outsider from Crawley, West Sussex — guides things with restraint, letting the space speak louder than the noise. Four Tet’s version of ‘Alone’ closes the first disc like a forgotten lullaby, cracked and glinting. You don’t get every remix — the more textural, post-rock turns are gone — but you do get a sharp cross-section that keeps faith with both atmosphere and momentum. It's the kind of record that feels designed for the night: not to lift it, exactly, but to sink into it willingly, track by track.

Review: Robert Smith has always treated remixing less like revision, more like ritual — a habit that’s followed him since his days in Crawley, West Sussex, piecing together worlds from scraps. This triple-disc release feels assembled with obsessive care, mapping out every possible mood lurking beneath the surface. There are club-ready flips, yes — Sally C, Danny Briottet and Gregor Tresher all push the rhythm forward — but they sit beside glacial pieces that feel more like haunted sketches than reworks. Mura Masa’s take on ‘All I Ever Am’ is disintegrated almost beyond recognition, its vocal a flickering memory. Mogwai’s ‘Endsong’ feels like the end of the world in slow motion. Even Chino Moreno turns in something striking — ‘WarSong’ morphs into a sludgy howl with heat-warped edges. But it’s the sequencing that surprises: these aren’t bolted together, but grouped in arcs, as though Smith were arranging the bones of an old idea into something still alive. Four Tet’s version of ‘Alone’ is a high point — deeply textured but featherlight. What matters is the feeling of being drawn somewhere, and Smith’s hand never letting go.

Review: Puma Blue, the project of South-London-born, Atlanta-based Jacob Allen, moves in a starkly different direction with this latest release. Stripping away the layered trip-hop, jazz, and electronica influences of previous works, he now focuses on a more direct and vulnerable form of songwriting. With just his guitar and voice, Allen crafts an album that feels intimate, raw, and deeply personal. Each track is a careful balance of simplicity and complexity. On 'Tapestry', the narrative unfolds like a dense, aching reflection, while 'Hotel Room' captures a moment of quiet melancholy with an almost confessional tone. In contrast, 'In the Absence of You' is stark in its honesty, delivering a minimalist sentiment that resonates with painful clarity. The absence of the full band setup places the weight of emotion solely on Allen's shoulders, allowing his vocal delivery and guitar work to shine. The result is a profoundly affecting listen, one that's less about expansive sound and more about the intimate space between notes, where every breath and pause feels significant. It's a deeply personal exploration of solitude and longing, executed with haunting simplicity.

Review: Given his long-held love of fusing elements of different musical cultures from around the world, Auntie Flo (real name Brian D'Souza) is almost the perfect Multi-Culti artist. It's something of a surprise then to find that this is only his second outing on the label. He begins in confident mood with 'Esperanto', a delightfully melodious, bubbly and synth-heavy slab of chugging sonic joy, before wrapping waves of mind-altering electronics and sun-bright synths around a slipped Afro-tech beat on 'Unua Libro'. Over on side two, D'Souza takes us to a deeper and more immersive place on 'El Heine', explores hybrid cosmic/ambient soundscapes on 'Ho Mia Kor', and doffs a cap to the new age ambient pioneers of times gone by on blissful closing cut 'Mia Penso'.

Review: Manchester's Joe McBride delivers a deeply atmospheric experience across his latest release, effortlessly fusing dub techno, ambient textures and broken rhythms with an unmistakable sense of space and restraint. Side-A opens with 'Kings Chamber', a hauntingly beautiful cut where static crackle meets dubbed-out echoes and shimmering pads. It's rich with melodic overtones that rise like mist over a subterranean rhythm, channeling both warmth and mystery in equal measure. 'Different Sound' follows with a deeper flow rooted in island bass traditions but filtered through McBride's ambient dubstep sensibility. The track's low-end sway, interspersed with ghostly echoes and spacious percussive flickers, gives it a grounded yet otherworldly feel, perfect for headphones or late-night sets. Flipping to Side-B, 'SK1 Dub' continues the journey, conjuring a cosmic, delay-laden soundscape that balances restraint with motion. It's a masterclass in space and sonics, where minimal elements swirl and stretch, maintaining a hypnotic pulse throughout. McBride shows that his touch is both technical and emotive, crafting meditative grooves that feel like they breathe.

Review: Brian Eno, legendary master of ambient music and Beatie Wolfe, the LA-based conceptual artist known for her innovative blend of the physical and digital, unite for a collaborative sonic exploration. Throughout 2024, the two artists recorded material that bridges the boundary between deeply personal emotions and universal experiences, creating an evocative soundscape. The work pulses with the distinctive energy of Eno's ambient prowess, while Wolfe's haunting vocals add a layer of intimacy. On tracks like 'Milky Sleep' and 'Hopelessly At Ease', the listener is swept into a dreamlike state where time feels suspended. These moments of calm are balanced by the more urgent, yet still deeply meditative, 'Suddenly', which sways between serenity and tension. The delicate interplay between light and shadow becomes even more palpable on 'A Ceiling and Lifeboat', where the quiet sense of stillness gives way to a profound sense of rebirth. There's a sense of movement throughout the releaseiparticularly on 'Breath March', where rhythm and texture converge with palpable energy. Eno's atmospheric layers create space for Wolfe's voice to become a thread, guiding the listener through these reflective, almost sacred-feeling sonic spaces, where every note invites introspection and feeling.

Review: Brian Eno's career has always been about explorationiof sound, technology and the emotional power of music. After pioneering ambient music, Eno has consistently sought out new ways to blend different genres and voices and his latest collaboration with Beatie Wolfe continues this tradition. Wolfe, a British-American artist with an innovative approach to music and activism, complements Eno's atmospheric world with her emotive, alternative vocals. Their work, recorded in London, moves seamlessly from the meditative to the experimental, with tracks like 'Big Empty Country' offering stark contrasts between the brightness of the day and the shadows of the night. This release is not only a nod to Eno's sonic experimentation but also a testament to his lasting influence as an artist who always seeks to connect art with broader societal issues, especially the environment.

Review: Brian Eno, a towering figure in ambient music and a master of sonic landscapes, has shaped the contours of modern music through his production collaborations with iconic artists like David Bowie, Talking Heads and U2. His latest work with Beatie Wolfe, a conceptual artist from Los Angeles, encapsulates a career of endless reinvention. Recorded in London, the collaboration weaves together the worlds of alternative vocals and ambient soundscapes. 'Big Empty Country' serves as a vivid contrast between light and darkiits day and night versions embodying the very essence of Eno's immersive, evolving sound. Much like his work as part of Roxy Music and beyond, this release is both forward-thinking and introspective, grounded in a shared commitment to environmentalism and artistic exploration. It's a meditation on space, sound and feelingian unbroken thread in Eno's enduring legacy of artistic expression.

Review: Madlib, the visionary producer from Oxnard, California, brings a fresh perspective to one of his defining works with this remastered double vinyl edition. Originally released in 2008, the collection stands as a high point in his extensive catalog, showcasing his mastery in blending raw, dusty beats with experimental soundscapes. A tribute to pirate radio culture, it effortlessly merges hip-hop, jazz, and soul, with standout contributions from Talib Kweli, Guilty Simpson, MED, and others. Tracks like 'Blow the Horns on 'Em' pulse with vibrant energy, while 'The Plan Pt. 1' unfolds with a laid-back, hypnotic groove. Madlib's ability to transform obscure samples into captivating rhythms is on full display, making this release both a playful exploration and a deeply immersive experience. The remastered vinyl edition restores the warmth and grit that defines Madlib's unique sound, adding depth to the analog experience. With original artwork and a premium pressing it's an essential for vinyl enthusiasts and Madlib fans who value the artistry of unfiltered, genre-defying beats.

Review: Recorded in collaboration with Nils Frahm at Berlin's Leiter Studio, Ganavya's fourth album is destined to carve its own path to recognition due to its unique quality. A follow-up to last year's acclaimed Daughter of a Temple, which drew praise from many music outlets, Nilam - probably best known her for her appearance alongside Sault at their recent live show - continues her journey into music as devotion, meditation and memory. Born in New York and raised in Tamil Nadu, she moves fluidly between traditions, channeling pilgrimage trails, harikatha storytelling and jazz improvisation into something uniquely her own. Her voice is unhurried, intimate and full of clarity, conjuring stillness even in motion. It's a sound that invites stillness but never feels static, where every breath carries the weight of generations and each silence says as much as her lyrics. The songs on Nilam feel distilled from years of lived experience, shaped by years of live performance as tracks like 'Sees Fire' blend Eastern tonalities with meditative jazz, fusing introspection with emotional firepower. The album traces the patterns of gratitude, loss and rootedness meanwhile anchoring the listener in a place beyond the physical. Rather than chase genre, ganavya reaches toward essence. Nilam isn't just an album, it's a moment held in reverence. A sonic altar where memory, spirit and sound meet. In her hands, song becomes a ritual of listening.

Review: After a remarkable project launch last year - the red ribbon cutter DJ Friction Presents Ground Control for Sedsoul - DJ Friction now lifts the lid on his new label Soulsonic, with the aid of soul companions Soulkitchen, cracking the safe with a vibrant 7” single ahead of his second full-length. ‘Step Into The Light’ is a vimmy slice of funk-disco, with powerhouse vocals from David Whitley on the A, whose body-power could only manifest in counterpart to a stripped back B on the flip. The track’s gospel inflections recall the electrified optimism of early 80s dance music, thought it also grafts on robo handclaps and tight modern production.
