Review: Analog Africa belongs alongside the likes of Awesome Tapes From Africa and Light In The Attic in the annals of great modern day afro rock/beat reissue labels. The imprint has consistently delivered some monumental releases, all of them giving the listener a detailed insight into a particular scene or cultural corner of time. We're pretty sure that many people out there had no idea that there was a 'cosmic' sound in Cabo Verde in the 1977-1985 period, but there you go, you've learned something new. This is all dancefloor fire, and along with a gorgeous fanzine booklet, you have fifteen ridiculously forward-thinking and rare-as-hell electronic funk bombs from Africa. Fill your mind with the underrated genius of people like Antonio Sanches, Jose Casimiro, Bana, and the rest of this amazing crew or like-minded futurists. Release of the week!

Review: Just when you think that the well of obscure music from around the world has run dry, Analog Africa returns to put the record straight. Pop-Makossa shines a light on a glorious but largely overlooked period in the story of Cameroonian makossa, when local musicians began to replace funk and highlife influences with the rubbery bass of classic disco and the sparkling synth flourishes and drum machines of electrofunk. The resultant compilation, which apparently took eight years to produce, is packed full of brilliant cuts, from the heavily-electronic jauntiness of Pasteur Lappe's "Sanaga Calypso" and horn-totin' Highlife-disco of Emmaniel Kahe and Jeanette Kemogne's "Ye Medjuie", to the dense, organ-laden wig out that is Clement Djimogne's "Africa".

Review: Khaliphonic represents a rich seam alongside sister label ZamZam Sounds, carrying forth vital modern iterations of dubwise music from switched on artists the world over. As such, compilations like these are a perfect primer on who's out there doing great things, whether it's Bristol duo Titus 12 & MTF, Japan's Undefined or West Coast veterans Systemwide. There are plenty of ideas and styles explored here, from melancholic synth steppas to trad-school echo chamber immersion, but the constant is a staggering high quality. If a label should be a trusted stamp of authority, then Khaliphonic have their role nailed. Essential sonics for any dub-minded explorer.

Review: SlothBoogie is back to encourage you once more to dance with your friends courtesy of this third volume of tantalising musical treats. The London crew has tapped up 16 artists for this one, with new names brought in and soon to find a sweet spot. The mix oversell is as varied and juicy as you would expect with Philippa's jazzy 'Chet's Vibe' exploring lovely deep house, 'Skleyka' by Lowres offering up some subtle funk infusions and 'We On Dis Ting' by Tiptoes getting a little saucy and steamy. Another well curated, well executed collection of essential modern sounds.

Review: Tsunaki Kadowaki curates Midnight in Tokyo 4, exploring an obscure form, "Ambient Kayo", which shortens the Japanese pop phenomenon Kayokyoku or "Showa-era pop" and dissolves it in a blushing, titrated wash of ambience, taking cues from the "Showa-era" pop period that lasted roughly from 1977-1999. The compilation presents a diverse breadboard, with such charcuterie items as Yosui Inoue's 'Umi e Kinasai', an ambient pop gem and Balearic bisque, and Keiko Nosaka & George Murasaki's 'Oritatamu Umi', blending Okinawan and progressive rock. The collection also has hidden treasures like S.R. Kinoshita's 'Mangrove', a mystical New Age piece, and 'Yume Furin' by E.S. Island, capturing island life's higher vibrations. With contributions from iconic figures like Haruomi Hosono, this album is an evocative, genre-defying celebration of Japanese ambient pop that resonates with contemporary sensibilities.

Review:  Halogenix's label levels up in a major way here as he invites a whole troupe of talents over to Gemini Gemini for some heavyweight underground bubblers, bangers and bliss-outs. Those on the hunt for dreamy deep cuts should head for Fonts introspective stepper 'L.U.V', Azotix's 'Back Seat' and 'Monty & Indira May's 'The Motion' while those looking for something a lot darker and meaner will be all over the pure growlage of Koherent's 'Mercurial' and Quartz's thundering 'Strike Anywhere'. Complete with tracks from the likes of Zar and Verbz, Satl & Styke and En:vy, this is a very promising series from one of d&b's most authentic and consistent operatives. With additional input from GG's All Stars and The Revolutionaries, some rare and unreleased versions are also included and sound tip-top as they have been sourced from the original master tapes, with extensive liner notes by Dr. Buster Dynamite.

Review: A thrilling journey into the golden age of Peruvian cumbia with 28 tracks from the vaults of Discos MAG. Spanning 1964 to 1987, the compilation sees the evolution of a genre that blends Colombian and Cuban tropical rhythms with western influences like 60s beat and psychedelic rock, enriched by indigenous Amazonian and Andean melodies. The result is a kaleidoscope of sound that pulses with life and energy, seamlessly bridging tradition and innovation. Electric guitars intertwine with echoes of orchestral styles, reflecting the influence of figures like Hugo Blanco and Lucho Bermudez while maintaining a distinctly Peruvian identity. Tracks from iconic bands such as Los Diablos Rojos, Los Ecos and Los Demonios del Mantaro highlight the genre's diverse textures, from upbeat anthems to hypnotic grooves. It's a definitive showcase of Peruvian cumbia's enduring vibrancy and cultural depth.

Returning for a whopping 27th installment, Mauritian musician DJ Ravin again handicrafts a seamless blend of deep chill, house, and world influences, cutting a fine shape in Roman numeric elegance: Buddha-Bar XXVII. Transportive ambiances and interaural sensoria predominate on the likes of Tamer Elderini's 'Souq' and Majnoon's 'Hatiralar'. Whether setting the mood for a gathering or for use as a relaxant-enhancer, this latest comp offers an unparalleled auditory e-scape.

Review: Music From Memory totally recall and compile this next instalment in their popular multi-artist compilation series, Virtual Dreams. This time centring on Ambient Explorations In The House And Techno Age, Japan 1993-1999, this second edition in the series follows on from the first released in 2020, and continues to shine a light on the house and techno-adjacent music that helped redefine the definition of ambient music during the 1990s. While the first focused on Europe, we venture far further East here, primarily riffing on the many ambient flows and sequential somnaumblisms eminent from the J-shaped isle from the time, including the trans-missive floater, 'Phoenix At Desert' by Akio and the pulse-tidal electro phaseout, Web's 'The Cycle Of Seasons'.

Review: The crate-diggers behind the Mr Bongo label can usually be relied upon to showcase some seriously good tunes old and new. That's certainly the case on this third volume in their occasional "Record Club" series of compilations. Spanning sunshine soul, obscure samba, spacey jazz-funk experimentation, wide-eyed underground disco, fiery funk, weirdo rock, cheery South African bubblegum, synth-laden early '80s highlife, Ramsay Lewis style workouts and the psychedelic Middle Eastern disco-funk of Elias Rahbani, the compilation's 20 tracks are not only near faultless, but genuinely surprising and eye-opening. To quote a cliche, this collection genuinely is all killer and no filler.

Review: Since launching late last year, Harlem Shuffle Records has reissued a string of killer reggae recordings from the 1960s and 70's. Here the imprint offers up its first compilation, a 14-track selection of early reggae, dub and rocksteady hand-picked from the vaults of such legendary labels as Black Swan, Blue Cat, Duke, Doctor Bird, High Note and Trojan. It's a fine and hugely entertaining collection all told, with highlights including the easy, laidback skank of Stranger & Patsy's 'Tell it to Me', the trumpet-laden instrumental shuffle of 'Walk With Des' by Des All Stars, the Hammond-powered dancefloor heaviness of Clancy Collins' 'Brother Moses' and the prototype dub brilliance of 'Black Out' by the Hardy Boys.

Review: The third volume of Gangster Music marks the grand finale of Gangster Doodles' iconic trilogy and delivers a bold, eclectic mix of underground legends and rising stars. The 30-track compilation features hip-hop pioneers like Lee Perry and Tommy Wright III alongside innovative artists such as Devin Morrison, Homeboy Sandman and Suzi Analogue. With a global lineup spanning from SoundCloud rappers to genre-defying producers, Vol. 3 naturally captures a diverse range of rap and beat cultures with real authenticity. There are stoner beats and chilling trap sounds, socially-aware calls to action and raw street-wise standouts. This series has been short-lived but much loved and closes in legendary fashion.

Review: The liberation of Mali from French rule in 1960 led to an explosive musical renaissance, and on this latest 2xLP compilation, Mr Bongo seek to remonstrate the nation's excellence in the face of much strife. After 1970, amid revived drives to document many national and regional music productions from the West African nation, Malian culture underwent a fertile transformation, with state-sponsored bands and orchestras able to record with sound engineers for the first time. Compiled by French writer and journalist Florent Mazzoleni and Mr Bongo's own David Buttle, we hear here the likes of Ousmane Kouyate & Ambassadeurs Internationaux, Rail Band, Les Messagers du Mali, Mystere Jazz de Tombouctou and many more, where bright, fuzz-packed tones whirl about our ears in serene squalls of balafon-driven funk, rumba, wassoulou, jeli and blues.

Review: UNTZ Anthems is a wild ride through some of dance music's biggest dancefloor moments. There is absolutely no restriction in terms of genres, eras or artists which makes each one a real selection box of sound. This third volume for example takes in the timeless house classic 'Move Your Body' as reworked by Solar, but also the pop dance of Calvin Harris & Ellie Goulding's 'Miracle' and jump up jungle of Sub Focus & Dimension's 'Desire.' CamelPhat & Elderbrook's GRAMMY-nominated 'Cola' brings a touch of house depth while Riva Starr's Paradise Garage club mix of 'Hey Hey' reworks the house anthem into something more strobe-lit and energetic.

Freedom Express - "Get Down" (3:28)
Review: Soul Cal is a deep dive into America's independent 70s soul scene, expertly curated by Eothen 'Egon' Alapatt. This compilation is a prime blend of the retro-utopian vision, where small-town record stores and garages across the U.S. might have been hiding virtuosic funk and soul outfits. The bittersweet joy of these previously overlooked musicians finally getting recognition is palpable, and the music itself is an absolute thrill. Songs like Luther Davis' 'You Can Be A Star' and Pure Essence's 'Wake Up,' the album is an impressive variety of styles, from heartfelt ballads to hard-hitting funk grooves. Anubis' 'Ecology' and Mixed Feelings' 'Sha-La-La' add a dash of social consciousness, while Leon Mitchison & The Eastex Freeway Band's 'Love Is' brings smooth sophistication. Mastered by Dave Cooley and team, the sound quality is stellar, making these hidden gems shine. Soul Cal is not just a tribute but a rediscovery, offering a bittersweet glimpse into an era of soul music often overshadowed by its mainstream counterparts.

Review: Things were different back in 2001 and the dance music world was less attuned to the responsibilities it has towards the marginalised communities that birthed the genre back in the 80s. For that reason, it's unlikely any new compilation featuring music by mostly white artists would be called Africanism Allstars these days, but alas that was the case with this collection when it was originally released. Title aside, the music stands up with a chunky house sound and plenty of tribal grooves featuring big names like DJ Gregory, Martin Solveig, Bob Sinclair and Soga amongst others.

Review: You can never really pin down what the excellent Emotional Repose label does and that is exactly the sinking behind the title of its superb All Trades show on NTS. The sheer eclecticism of that show is now reflected in this new two-part compilation, also called All Trades, which offers up little morsels of what they do, something like a sonic tasting menu at a fancy restaurant. There is chugging electronic dub from Apiento & Tepper, industrial clatter from Black Bones, cosmic ambient breakbeat from Paperclip Minimiser and blissed out dub from Yamila & SoFa Elsewhere amongst many more highlights.

Review: Emotional Response returns with a second volume of its All Trades compilation which is named after its own NTS show. It is just as vast both in terms of style but also the eras it spans with a mix of dub, new wave, slow motion electronics and plenty in between. Tolouse Low Trax kicks off with the filthy dirty and seriously heavy dub glitch of 'Ossia' to provide an early highlight before the likes of Al Wootton get percussive and tribal with 'Altai' and HLM38 channels some African Head Charge on another devastating dub cut. Later on, London's Good Block brings a little more light and sunshine with their lovely 'Strong Relax.'

Gui Boratto collaborates with Darren Emerson on the captivating 'The Shell,' and Rex The Dog offers the heartfelt 'Laika.' Raxon's 'Beskar' showcases his Star Wars inspiration, and David Hasert and Nicone's 'Wasting My Time With You' is a highlight. Reinhard Voigt's quirky 'Der, der mit dem Gummiball sang (Orange)' features various animals, while Argia's 'Love Keeps You Running' blends groove and pop. Wassermann's track concludes the compilation with a touch of Arabian Nights magic. Total 24 is a diverse and engaging collection that exemplifies Kompakt's ability to curate exceptional electronic music.

Review: Catawba Records celebrates 40 years of influential music with The Lowdown: A Catawba Records Story. Founded by industry legend Richard Mack who helped launch icons like Earth, Wind & Fire and The Jacksons, this curated compilation from the label highlights Catawba's rich legacy in disco and soul with standout tracks from Maurice Starr, Dutch Robinson and The Fantastic Aleems. It takes in all manner of infectious grooves with throwback analogue drums sounds, brilliant keys and smooth vocals with plenty of rare edits, unreleased gems and more well-known but still timeless cuts. Favourites for us include the lithe and leggy Silk jam 'Somethin' 'Bout The Way' and the soul-drenched funk-disco of Jackie Moore & Wilson Pickett's 'Seconds Of Your Love'.

Review: 10 years of Amsterdam's Vault Records is celebrated on this latest edition of their Vault Sessions techno compilation. While many a label can lay claim to ownership of and control over a "vault" of music, how many of them can submit to surrender 20 such golden sonic ingots when faced with a ransom to release music, *and* still keep enough in the strongroom to keep the books balanced? While we've now the keys to many a high-profile private client's dirtiest collateral deposits - Jpsrv35's twinkling blood garnet 'Soulsearch', Quelza's illegal software 'Automated Assistance Program', Grace Dahl's precious heirloom 'The Green Room' , Stef Mendesidis' diplomatically immune 'License To Fly' - we suspect that many more such greats lay hidden behind astringent locks, impervious to the next heist. All tunes leave us Vaulting!

Review: It's been a while since the last one but finally, the fourth volume of the Mighty Mellow collection is here. It is another delight from the editors of The Mood Mosaic series and this time out, they explore mushy funk and abstract jazz while featuring tracks from a diverse range of artists including Pete Jolly, Annette Peacock, Dusty Springfield and more. Across the four sides of vinyl are an eclectic mix of soulful grooves and experimental sounds that span genres and eras. It's largely laidback, gentle funk and jazz for those occasions when you want to kick back and get lost.

Review: The Disco Express's semi-regular vinyl outings mine the prolific label's extensive catalogue of digital-only EPs, offering up the strongest and most popular cuts. Here they deliver the label's official 'best of' selection for 2024, an album-length excursion with seven sizzling tracks on offer. There's naturally plenty to set the pulse racing and get the feet moving, from the Sylvester-style vocals and chunky disco-house grooves of Art of Tones' 'The Magic Count' and the expansive, jazz-flecked disco/deep house fusion of Moodena's rework of Mayrag's 'Poison For Us', to the Hi-NRG-tinged 21st century electrofunk flex of Luksek's 'Break For Dancers' and the slow-motion soulfulness of Rayowa's superb 'In The Sunshine'.

Review: French label Wagram is a go-to when it comes to quality compilations that take a broad look at certain sounds and scenes, and this one is an on-going series that focuses on house sounds with an Afro undertone. The grooves are lively and often come with plenty of percussion. The drums hit hard but with funk, the vocals are Afro-centric and plenty of irresistible hits come thick and fast from the jazzy tribal swagger of 'Imbalaye' to the big steel drum party sounds of 'Viet Dao' (Klement Bonelli & Yann DL remix). Another great collection of colourful Afro house sounds.

This compilation reflects the fusion of drum machines, synthesisers and Western influences like pop, reggae, disco and soul, all blended with traditional Nigerian genres like highlife and juju. It represents a period of innovation where new technology was used to reimagine and refresh cultural sounds and what results is a bold new sounds that is going to be lapse dup by fans of names like Steve Monite and Charles Amoah.

Review: The intriguing Road Fever delivers a hurricane of high-octane, body-shaking rhythms from St. Lucia, Dominica and Guadeloupe, all of which capture the zeitgeist of Caribbean music in 2025. This compilation showcases raw, instrumental Dennery Segment and Bouyon riddims that were originally crafted for vocalists and are now presented as standalone tracks. With turbo-charged 150+ bpm beats, minimal percussion, DJ and vocal samples all woven in with synth riffs, these tunes mash up carnival sounds with elements of trap, drill, Haitian konpa and Angolan kuduro for a truly global listen. They have all been compiled by Rozaly and highlight the electrifying energy of the Caribbean's current scene.

Sect Outro 1
Review: "It's All For You" is a complement to the Sect vinyl catalogue, and a mark of respect to the CD in techno history. Artists known and new swell the ranks, representing the techno forms in the honorable Sect style. Beyond the usual, exceptionally high standard of quality from the Sect roster of artists so far, new artist productions on the first CD include Ben Gibson's "Clamour", a modern take on a Tokyo-style future cityscape, Jeroen Search's "Section A", a physical, forward thinking deep techno triumph and Voidloss' "In The Void" - techno the way it should be made for the 21st century. On CD 2, AnD's "Granular" offers traditional dub aesthetics and modern techno techniques taken to a wholly satisfying next level, while OCH's "Tears" manifest as a dark techno experience of rhythm-led lines of perfection. CV's "Acceptance Of The Fact At Hand" hones hues of colour in aural form, as a subtle vista is painted with strings of haunted beauty.
