Review: The Blessed Madonna, aka US DJ and producer Marea Stamper is back with the release of her debut album proper after an album of remixes with Dua Lipa in previous years. Godspeed is a great embodiment of her sound which covers a wide range of house and disco styles, always served up with big energy and lots of love So far, fans have heard the bonus single 'Happier' featuring Clementine Douglas and it is a bittersweet bubblegum dance track blending melancholy vocals with triumphant production. The rest of the album promises the same infectious energy, with catchy basslines, sharp breakbeat breakdowns and a nostalgic feel. Godspeed captures Stamper's emotional depth and big time grooves in style.

Review: Funkadelic superstar George Clinton knew many a side project as a producer; one was the ingenious, part-cyborg duo, The Brides Of Funkenstein. It was Clinton's idea that two other backing singers, Lynn Mabry and Dawn Silva, become the Brides Of Funkenstein, a character he invented for the 1976 Parliament LP, The Clones Of Dr Funkenstein. So popular were the brides that Clinton wasted no time in signing them to Atlantic Records; their debut album here followed the rip-roaring fan feedback that ensued from their debut single 'Disco To Go' / 'When You're Gone' in the US. The decision to break the male-fronted P-funk mould was intentional: simply *that many* Clinton instrumentals could not be credited to the man alone. "He's got thousands of tracks. He's got a whole cupboard full of them. He's got enough tracks to keep him in albums for two years," once chimed Mabry. Enchanting each jam with mecha-augmented femme flair, we're urged to be taken to the limit, across a blistering seven, smackout tracks. Mark 'Warship Touchante', the star tune by far: a wonky hi-NRG nutter, splattered with surreal, performative electronic vocal effects.

From Behind then is full of all of Cowley's influences and blends psychedelic sounds into dancefloor-ready tracks that honour the songs that shaped him. Review: Turin DJ/producer Gigi D'Agostino started his career in the mid-80s, spinning Italo-disco, before scoring a host of Eurodance and dancefloor-focused synth-pop hits. Back in 2006, he dropped a vast double-disc compilation entitled Some Experiments, which has now been given the remix treatment. Heavy on his own productions and remixes, much of the material combines sounds familiar from Italo-disco, synth-pop, trance and Eurodance releases with beats that vary in tempo and Italian vocals. There are plenty of genuine 'experiments' though, including his own synthesiser-based (but still classical-sounding) cover of Andrea Bocelli favourite 'Con To Partio', a chunky 21st century Eurodance take on Europe's 'The Final Countdown' by Il Folklorista and the weighty, slow-trance chug of 'Rugiada' by Lento Violento Man.

Review: Bristolian turntablist and crate digger Andy Smith has long been renowned for the depth of his funk, soul and hip-hop selections, though it's only in recent years that we've discovered the quality and diversity of his disco collection. He continues to flex those credentials on the third instalment in his Reach Up - Disco Wonderland series. While there's plenty of obscurity on show, as you'd expect, Smith has chosen to include contemporary nu-disco cuts and fresh re-edits alongside vintage picks. So, while we cuts from The Sunshine Band, the disco-highlife of Orlando Julius and some late 70s electro-disco courtesy of French outfit Quartz, we're also treated to fresher tracks and edits from BB Soul, Birdee and Nick Reach Up, Yam Who and Full Intention. Throw in a killer DJ mix of the same material by Skratch Bastid and you have a genuinely essential collection.

Review: Following a pair of well-received albums on Juicebox Recordings (not to be confused with A Guy Called Gerald's 1990s label of the same name), self-styled "nu-funk" duo Franc Moody have transferred to Night Time Stories for the release of new album Chewing The Fat. Like its predecessors, it blends a left-of-centre, Hot Chip style sensibility with colourful and nostalgic synth sounds, disco strings, good grooves and nods aplenty to both 21st century electronica and the Halcyon days of synth-funk in the 1980s. The results are frequently superb, with highlights including the throbbing-but-sparse 'Square Pegs In Round Holes', jaunty opener 'Driving On The Wrong Side of the Road' and the blissful, tactile and string-laden nu-disco bounce of 'Bloodlines'.

Review: Between 1983 and '87, Fun Fun - a studio project fronted by a trio of female vocalists - delivered some of the most commercially successful Italo-disco records around, with a trademark sound that drew much from the club-ready sound of Hi-NRG. Review: Always keen to break new ground, Strut's latest compilation comes not from a well-known European or American crate-digger, but rather Kenyan-born, Uganda-based DJ Kampire. A Dancefloor in Ndola sees her look back to her time growing up in Zambia and specifically the music she heard and loved during these formative years. It's a great idea, executed brilliantly, with Kampire showcasing an enticing and highly entertaining mix of East and South African music from the 70s and 80s, including Congolese rumba and soukous, bubblegum, and kalindula, a guitar-led style native to Zambia. It's naturally best-known for boda-fide disco anthem 'Dance To The Drummer's Beat', but there are plenty of other hot, break-heavy classics on display - not least the low-slung, high-octane brilliance of 'Who's The Funky DJ?', the string-drenched disco-soul sweetness of 'Share Your Love' and the low-down, extra-heavy funk rinse-out that is 'Do The Handbone'.

Review: Established way-back in 1981, before the idea of Italo-disco as a standalone style became popular, Erik van Vilet and Michael van der Kuy's Laserdance project was responsible for a string of synth-heavy electronic disco and prototype Eurodance anthems. Unusually, the project is still a going concern, with the duo recording a new album in 2024. Fire On Earth dates from 1994 and here reappears on CD for the first time since. Review: Arriving almost exactly three months after its predecessor, HiFi Sean and David McAlmont's third collaborative full-length is lightly a conceptual flip side to 2024's Daylight - a "dusk till dawn" night drive sequel, as they put it. To provide a distinctly different sonic sheen to the album that preceded it, the duo has reached for slow, soft-touch grooves, dreamy textures, bubbly electronics, strobe-lit synths and musical motifs forged in darker, if still colourful, tones. Review: Berlin-based Dina Summer - a synth-loving trio fronted by the suitably sassy and no-holds barred singer Dina P - impressed with their Italo-disco and turn-of-the-millennium electroclash inspired debut album, Rimini. Review: Analogue Africa's latest deep dive into the forgotten corners of global music culture shines a light on Mexico's 'pirata' (bootleg) compilations of the early 1980s - sets that contained edited, pitched down and distorted versions of genuine dancefloor hits from Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and other central and South American countries. The compilations themselves were, of course, highly illegal, came with very strange covers, and - because of the in-demand nature of the music on offer - sold well. It's a great collection of trippy tropical music all told, with the accompanying booklet - written by a local specialist in 'pirata' musical culture - doing a great job of providing background information and showcasing the movement's strong link with Mexico's soundsystem-powered 'dance-party' scene of the turn of the 80s.
