Build A House

Build A House
Build A House (Prins Thomas dub)
Build A House (Tensnake remix)
Review: A swift return to Internasjonal for Cocktail D'Amour's Discodromo, with their cosmically charged disco burner "Build A House" lined with the distinctive vocal talents of diva supreme Hard Ton. His soaring vocals are the perfect accompaniment to a vintage Discodromo production that updates the disco template superbly - laying down a devilish bassline groove that sucks you in before Hard Ton arrives and blows you away. Label boss Prins Thomas turns in a fine dub remix that naturally brings the bassline to the fore whilst subjecting the vocal and melodic elements to all manner of reverse trickery! And look, the flip has a remix from your man Tensnake, who rewires the track to some sort of Jellybean Benitez mid 90s pump and in the process delivers his finest work for some time.

Johnny Hammond - "Los Conquistadores Chocolates"
Quasimode - "Los Conquistadores Chocolates"
Review: A really cool concept from Expansion here; one side is a reissued seminal classic, the other is a contemporary version. And what a way to start the start the series; hard bop hero Johnny Hammond influenced pretty much every soul, jazz, rare groove and funk artist who've followed in his path, and the joyously unpredictable "Los Conquistadores Chocolates" is one of his best. Naturally Japanese jazz outfit Quasimode are an ideal remix choice. Known for their wildstyle riffage and signature switches, they've paid the utmost respect to Hammond.

Hanini - "Allaoui" (5:06)
Hanini - "Mel'ha Marghbouna" (3:40)
Rachid Baba Ahmed - "House Rai Music" (9:57)
Review: Bongo Joe has put together a fine second volume of its Maghreb K7 Club: Disco Singles series here with Hanini and Rachid Baba Ahmed both appearing. Hanini's first is 'Allaoui', a brilliantly ass-wiggling rhythm with organic flutes, shuffling percussion and catchy rhythms that are drenched in the warmest sun and alive with whistles. Then comes 'Mel'ha Marghbouna' which is a vocal vibe with hints of Chic's funky disco and expressive rhymes. On the flip is Rachid Baba Ahmed's 'House Rai Music' which is a raw and full of coarse hits and jumbled percussive beats.

Review: Back in 2010, New York label Rong Music commissioned Rub N Tug to put together some edits as How & Why? for the first in a series of highly prized Promo Only 12"s. Over subsequent years, this series has seen contributions from Tiago, Prins Thomas, as well as plenty of names closely affiliated with Rong. Whilst the label may not be the most active these days, they have chosen to toast their 10 year anniversary with a 10th and final edition of the Promo Only series and have gone all out with a double pack of amazing edits by good friend and top vinyl aficionado Andi Hanley. The track titles alone should give you various degrees of clues as to the source material used by Hanley and it's a perfect way to end a series that has provided many selectors with long term secret weapons.

Lance - "Yo Quiero A Lucy" (edit) (4:53)
Marta Paradise - "Calling" (edit) (4:23)
Alan Strani - "Tension Salsable" (edit) (4:58)
Review: Maledetta Discoteca closes out its year with this special blue vinyl featuring a mix of brilliant Italo disco artists. They all hail from Italy and Argentina and are editing originals that span disco, electro, proto-house and more. Hararis' 'Si No Pagan' is the first under the scalpel and is a funky cut with raw drums. Lance's 'Yo Quiero A Lucy' is a more slowed down and seductive sound with 80s synths, Marta Paradise's 'Calling' (edit) is a direct and sugar synth laced house stomper and Alan Strani's 'Tension Salsable' brings things to a closer with a nice stomping disco grove with mysterious synths and lush percussion.

Review: Holybrune epitomizes retro-pop mastery, seamlessly blending English and French vocals in her latest release Joyride. Known for her collaborations with nu-funk sensation Daebull, she shines on tracks like 'DX7,' 'You & I,' and 'Day & Night.' Backed by Daebull and Rude Jude, her new EP offers a diverse sonic landscape. 'Joyride' channels 80s nostalgia with its swung rhythms and bass-heavy beats, while 'A Song To Send...' delivers a minimalist slow jam, showcasing Holybrune's ethereal vocals. Each track in this EP navigates through various sonic realms, cementing Holybrune's status as a rare talent in the realm of retro-pop.

Review: Vega Records finally drops this EP from Honeysweet having teased tunes from it on the Vega Records 5 Pack Unreleased III. It's a superb house offering with lashings of soulful groovers, all produced by Josh Milan. First out of the blocks is 'Last Night Changed It All' featuring Lawrence Clark on sax. It's a jam that will pack out the floor but brims with real musicality from the magical Rhodes, picked bass guitar, rhythm guitar and drums. 'Crazy' is a more raw, textured percussive sound but then come plenty more feel-good grooves for sun-kissed dance floors such as 'Being Free.'

Feel My Love (6:46)
Feel My Love (instrumental) (8:30)
Review: Long time crate diggers will know that an original of this one will often go for upwards of sixty quid. The 1981 disco tune is one of only three that American vocalist Lauriece Hudson ever appeared on, but boy is it a goodie. There's a hint of Tam Tam clubs's rickety drums to the way it builds, with hip swinging claps and lush strings all adding depth and detail. Of course, it's the airy vocal that is the rightful centre piece as it soars to the cosmic skies and takes you with it. Whether dropping this one as a big Friday night warm up, end of the night go-home-happy tune or anything between, it is sure to never fail you.

Can't Fake The Feeling (5:15)
Can't Fake The Feeling (dub) (7:00)
Review: There can't be many out there who aren't familiar with Geraldine Hunt's 1980 single 'Can't Fake The Feeling', a genuine disco-boogie anthem whose Chic-style groove, tasty orchestration, gnarled guitars and sing-along vocals are so familiar they're almost iconic. Whether it needs remixing is open for debate, but Carl Cox has at least done a sympathetic job. His full vocal 'remix' adds a little house bounce to the track while retaining most of the original elements, while his 'rework' re-imagines it as a stomping disco-techno slammer of the sort that Dave Angel used to be famous for. Throw in the peerless original mix and a hard-to-find, late-'80s 'dub' mix and you have an excellent package.

Review: The Private Stock label is back with more of their irresistible house magic with a limited translucent red splattered 12" featuring some pretty big names. Terry Hunter kicks off with the sort of guitar-laced roller that you imagine would have been massive at Paradise Garage with 'Go Back Jack' then Ian Wallace brings big and sunny house stomps with his 'From Beginning To End.' DJ Jazzy Jeff & Kaidi Tatham then team up for the irresistibly feel-good disco, soul and house fusion that is 'Doin' The Most' and Matthew Law lays down dusty MPC drums with grinning bass and lo-fi atmospheres on the perfectly entitled 'Dilla's Disco.'

Lend A Hand (3:41)
Review: This tidy new 7" takes two singles from a 1973 album by Bobby Hutton, who was a cult Northern Soul singer from Chicago. Both of them are big tunes, with "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love" soaring to the heavens on lush backing vocals and gorgeous basslines. Hutton himself sings in glowing, heart sweeping ways as the horns compliment his delivery. "Lend A Hand" - written by Terry Callier and Larry Wade - is a more uplifting, good time groover with big horns and stabs, loose claps and grooves to really tie yourself up in.

Review: British-born Sheila Hylton's name is catnip for reggae-loving record diggers. The vocalist spent much of her childhood in Jamaica and has an effortlessly soulful take on roots and lovers' rock. She recorded several albums and many singles but none are as sought after as her cover of 'It's Gonna Take a Lot of Love', which was originally written by Neil Young. An original copy of this 45rpm will cost you about a week's wages so Jaywax has pressed up this version so you can own your own mint copy. Flip it over for the instrumental dub version 'Labamba' which is laden with percussion, keys and studio trickery.

Review: Emotional Rescue return to the work of Noel Williams as King Sporty. The Miami-based Jamaican made some seminal, stunning music that presaged the increasing importance of synthesisers in disco and dance music overall. This time the label have decided to give a regal airing to a cut previously only available squeezed onto the Deep Reggae Roots LP. "Safari" is a heady brew that keeps a necessary skank in the groove while channeling the nagging funk of The Meters and heading somewhere exotic. At just under four minutes, it's the kind of jam that warrants an extended treatment, and who better to do a respectful job than Lexx, who more than doubles the run time of the track on the B side.

Bormaz (8:39)
Review: Hypnosis (more often than not written 'Hipnosis') enjoyed success in their native Italy in the early-to-mid 1980s, initially with club-focused Italo-disco interpretations of then contemporary cuts by fellow European synth-fanciers. Having debuted in 1983 with a cover of Vangelis's 'Pulstar', they followed it up by taking on Jean-Michel Jarre's global smash 'Oxygene'. Here it gets a deserved reissue, allowing a new generation to revel in its alluring mixture of arpeggio-style bass, rubbery bass guitar licks, cascading electronics, triple-time drums and electrofunk inspired translations of Jarre's famous, insatiably hooky melody. Also included is original B-side 'Borpaz', a deliciously spacey, delay-laden original composition that includes some seriously funky synth licks and a proper early morning groove.

J Parker Band - "Live Lady" (TZ edit) (5:08)
Mister - "I Wanna Thank You" (4:50)
Henrietta Thomas - "I Want You (Right Now)" (4:45)
Review: We're used to Star Creature offering up authentically synth-heavy nu-boogie gems, but here they change tack with a little help from Chicago's Boogie Munster Crew. "Attack of The Chicago Boogie" sees them gather together some ridiculously rare private press gems originally recorded by Windy City musicians during the boogie and electrofunk era. They first offer up a fresh TJ & Hirsch re-edit of Andrew Kitchen's thrillingly squelchy and spacey "Attack of the Boogie", before TZ goes solo to rearrange J Parker Brown's deeper, warmer and more soulful lo-fi synth boogie treat "Live Lady". Over on the flip, Mister's "I Wanna Thank You" is a glossy, horn-sporting slab of polished boogie brilliance, while Henrietta Brown's "I Want You (Right Now)" is a bustling and up-tempo affair heavily influenced by jazz-funk.

Trickski & Soul Clap - "Members Of The Clap"
Contra Communem Opinionem - "Sightless Brightness" (Permanent Vacation edit)
Beautiful Swimmers - "Excited"
Hunee - "A Study In Wild"
Review: As with the first Zwei vinyl sampler released by Permanent Vacation last month, this twelve inch accompaniment to the compilation proper is dominated by one track in particular. That honour is taken by Beautiful Swimmers, key figures on the Future Times roster and stepping out of their DC comfort zone for the first time and excel on the truly excellent "Excited". Commencing with the most satisfying of primal drum thumps, the implementation of simplistic vocal repetitions over raw synth stabs lifted from the mind of Harald Faltemeyer makes for the most visceral slices of dancefloor potency since the last! It's hidden away on the B Side along with Hunee's "A Study In The Wild", an instantly energising arrangement that continues the Berlin resident's keen run of channelling the emotions of vintage Chicago house through his own unique filters. Before you arrive here however, your ears get to take in a smart collab between Soul Clap and Trickski on the growling, low centred cosmic tumble that is "Members Of the Clap" as well as the PV lads sharpening their edit knives on a track from Mathematics act Contra Communem Opinionem.

Review: Many of the finest independent disco 45s that Athens of the North has reissued were licensed by crate digger David Haffner, so it's fitting that AOTN boss Euan Fryer has given him a compilation of his own. "Disco With A Feeling" contains some of those picks, alongside other obscure favourites from Haffner's sizable record collection. It's absolute fire from start to finish, with the little known private press and small-run cuts tending towards the more soulful and jazz-funk influenced end of the disco spectrum. Basically, it's a must-have for anyone who gravitates towards the rare end of the disco spectrum.

Review: Nighttime city pop on this new LITA reissue of Hamada Kingo's fourth album Midnight Cruisin, first released in 1982. A nine-track fourth album by the Japanese AOR singer-songwriter, formerly a member of the band Craft, Midnight Cruisin' marked his first album for Moon Records, and remains emblematic of his lamplit brand of cricket-serenaded soul; we can very easily imagine the singer and guitarist posted up with his axe at the fall of dusk, half astride a cobbled, blossom-flanked bridge, beseeching his beloved for forgiveness. Though the offhand character of the songs also suggest he could carry out such a thing with a cool flair and mastery; even heartbreak may be sugared by the gentle breeze, and thus breeziness inherited, in the act of midnight cruisin'.

Review: Beres Hammond's venture into soul and r&b, backed by a lineup of reggae legends, offers a surprising break from his usual style. The album blends disco-inspired elements with Hammond's rich vocals, yet tracks like 'Keep My Wheel Turning' and 'I'm Lonely' stand out with a raw edge, adding grit to the smooth soul vibes. The title track showcases Hammond's emotional depth in a yearning romantic ballad, yet it's the overall feeling of experimentation that gives the release its unique charm. While this detour into soul isn't a permanent shift, it finds Hammond working at the peak of his expressive powers, offering an unexpected but satisfying listen.

Review: Johnny Hammond was a prolific organist, composer and multidisciplinary artist active throughout the USA for the majority of the 20th Century. By the time the lesser-known LP and meditation on devilish excess 'Gambler's Life' was released in 1974, Hammond's sound had grown unusually cacophonous and was noisy to a kind of perfection that could only be described as an acquired taste. That doesn't deter us, though: this reissue from Soul Brother carefully pays homage to the late great's 28th album, with the broken wonk of 'Rhodesian Thoroughfare', the voluptuous funk of 'Star Borne' and the melismatic virtuosity of 'Virgo Lady' all tempting us back towards the broad gate.

Review: Classic jazz funk album from the legendary Johnny 'Hammond' Smith with a special version with six previously unissued bonus out-takes. Released in 1975 and his 32nd long player, it heralded a fresh chapter in his career that saw him exploring more electronic instrumentation and deeper shades of funk in a similar way to Roy Ayers or Bob James. The result was a timeless document that carries motifs of many of today's artists; the harmonies of "Can't We Smile?", for instance, smack of Plantlife while the punctuated piano work and mirrored squiggling synths on "Song For The Family" echoes with Flying Lotus-style whim. Also a key source of breaks for many junglists, Gears is a historic document that's not only played a strong role in electronic music but still sounds incredible today.

Here they go one step further, delivering a first full-length full of tracks recorded way back in 1981. Immaculately mastered from the original studio tapes, "Dust To Diamonds" is as good a boogie-era album as you're likely to hear. Rich in slap bass, soulful vocals, good-time grooves, jazz-funk flourishes and colourful synthesizer lines, the eight tracks flit between sugary warmth and effervescent dancefloor heat. In other words, this is genuine buried treasure for DJs who take disco and boogie seriously.

Soundtracking the gritty downtown NYC streets he made his first mark on, this limited collection captures the whole melting pot from b-boy culture with cuts such as "E.T Boogie" and "Bump N Grind", raw boogie and soul ("Over & Over") and pure drama ("The Guardian Angel Is Watching Over Us"). A powerful collection as striking and relatable as his own signature.

Review: Stefan Schwander aka Harmonious Thelonious is back on Italic presenting a new album of globetrotting sounds. More often seen experimenting with polyrhythms with Florian Meyer aka Don't DJ and Marc Matter as The Durian Brothers, most of Schwander's work these days is centred around his Harmonious Thelonious project. Often contributing to Meyer's Diskant label as well as presenting original works on his Asafa imprint, International Dance Record follows up last years Santos LP. The Harmonious Thelonious sound is undoubtedly centred in traditional musical forms, but not bound to specific practices from any one part of the globe. Starting out with the uplifting Afro vibes of "Uhura", there's plenty of variety on offer when considering the sublimely exotic drum science of "Kimbili", the feelgood Nigerian boogie vibes of "Remake" and of course the killer drum sampler workout "Too High To Get Over".

Review: While former New Young Pony Club member (and sometime Hot Chip collaborator) has devoted much of her career to DJing, her occasional solo musical releases have always been strong. Her solo debut LP, 2021's Private Sunshine, was excellent, but if anything this belated sophomore effort is even better. The album's genius lies in its consistency and the first signs of a smart, stylish, trademark boogie and proto-house influenced synth-pop sound, with extra authenticity provided by clear sonic nods to classic 1980s cuts from NYC and beyond. She's always been a talent, but it feels like a genuine crossover moment could be upon us - helped, no doubt, by the quality of the sassy 'Frequency', slow-motion jam 'Stop The Rain' and future dancefloor anthem 'In My Heart'.

Review: Hear & Now's 2018 debut album, "Aurore Baleare", was to our ears one of the best things Claremont 56 has put out in recent years, which is high praise given the label's notoriously high standards. "Alba Sol", the experienced Italian duo's follow-up, is arguably even better. Wisely, they've subtly tweaked their slow-motion, sun-kissed Balearic disco template to include more sounds and grooves associated with the Italian dream house sound of the late '80s and early '90s, as well as nods towards cosmic disco and the groovier end of the West Coast rock spectrum. It's a blend that results in a string of inspired cuts that are capable of putting a smile on the face of even the most miserable of listeners. Recommended!

Review: Heatwave's cult classic debut album Too Hot to Handle is a glorious ode to funk-disco sounds from the American outfit. It was recorded from 1975 to 1976 and arrived that same year in the UK, a year later in the Us, and remains a much-loved album all these decades later. The Dayton., Ohio-formed band features well over 10 different members in its time but this album was written exclusively by songwriter/keyboardist Rod Temperton who hooked up with the band when the founding member, Johnnie Wilder, had relocated to London, England after being in the services and based in West Germany.

Review: Heatwave's greatest hits collection from 1984 is a perfect embodiment of their sound. Disco, soul and funk all combine to thrilling and floor filling effect across nine tracks. The band formed in the mid-70s in Europe but had members from all over the world. Johnnie Wilder was the founder and an American serviceman based in West Germany who stayed put after the war and sang in local clubs before hooking up with Rod Temperton in the UK. 'Boogie Nights' is their most iconic and successful hit and it opens this collection in gloriously uplifting fashion.

Review: Chicago was a hotbed for talent in the 1970s (well, it always has been and always will be, to be honest) and one of the groups to emerge at that time was Heaven & Earth, a vital soul vocal collective. They released four high-quality albums and this one, 'I Can't Seem To Forget You', was the first on Clarence Johnson's G.E.C. Label. It is packed with super sweet vocals and Dwight Dukes' lush falsetto and has never before been reissued. This version from the good folks at P-VINE has an extra bonus cut 'Promises,' which has previously only been available as a single from 1975.

Review: Graft Dracula in Oberbayern, or Dracula Blows His Cool, is the one of the very best B-movie greats of the last thirty years, and we can say this without a shadow of a doubt! Not only is the premise of the cult comedy easily one of the most imaginative and quirky stories to have been made into a film, but Gerhard Heinz' soundtrack was a wake-up call from anyone into the sounds of disco and early boogie, back at the time. In fact, the movie has gained notoriety thanks to this very score, having diggers salivating manically for an original copy. However, it's not all disco sensibility; Heinz is a man who can construct even the most obscure of acoustic roles, but his specialty certainly rests in synthesizers and dance music. Absolute tip!

Review: When interviewed around the release of the first Hercules & Love Affair album in 2008, main man Andy Butler did little to hide his house influences, despite that set's loose disco vibe. Since then, he's continued to pursue a retro-futurist house agenda, and here re-states his credentials with a DJ Kicks mix that happily joins the dots between vintage New York house and garage, acid, contemporary revivalist fare and the odd foray into dubwise electrofunk territory (see the thriller from Mankind). It's an excellent representation of what you could expect from one his basement-bothering DJ sets and is jam-packed with largely overlooked fare from the '80s and '90s.

From the carefree playground Q&A of "1000 Luste" to the poignant synth atmospherics of "Republik" via the straight-up dancefloor haze of "Gut Bewegen", this sole LP from German duo is genuinely one of a kind. A theatrical fusion of electro, pop with dashes of vaudeville and new romance, it still smacks of future and drama 35 years later.

The pair have already impressed via a pair of well-regarded albums and here drop a third collaborative full-length - barely six months after its predecessor, Daylight, appeared in stores. Designed as a kind of flip side to that set - a loosely conceptual musical night drive from dusk 'til dawn - Twilight cannily combines slow, soft-touch grooves, dreamy textures, bubbly electronics, strobe-lit synths and McAlmont's honeyed vocals to great effect. The plentiful highlights include Blessed Madonna collaboration 'The Comedown', the tactile bliss of 'Goodbye Drama Queen', the huggable wooziness of 'High With You' and the heartfelt sweep of 'Star'.

More synth-heavy and strobe-lit than its predecessor, the album sees the effortlessly soulful McAlmont add his honeyed vocals to backing tracks rich in soft-touch grooves, dreamy textures, bubbly electronics and strobe-lit melodic motifs. This limited, deluxe edition is the one to grab if you can; aside from being pressed to colourful purple vinyl, it also comes bundled with a single-track seven-inch flexi-disc (containing a fine alternate dub mix of 'Driftaway') and an autographed art print.

Review: Nebraska born Dereck Higgins takes is on a real adventure on his latest album. It is somewhere around the 45th of his long career and is another futurist fusion of ambient, future disco, Kraut and Prince. The tracks exist in a digital soundstream where crunchy and pixelated leads and jittery sines, psyched out colours and prog leads all coalesce into what has been called 'confront food for music nerds.' Despite the unique palette and curious sound, this album is still hugely accessible and rewarding, with its weird soul and synthetic grooves always drawing you in deep.

Review: Hot Chip are back! The coolest dudes since Devo return like a monkey with a miniature cymbal with their seventh full length album. With vocoding effects layered over the sweet tone of Alexis Taylor's voice referencing all matter of contemporary and retro-active pop and trance sensibilities, this album once again sees Hot Chip at the front of pioneering, friendly and avant garde pop music. Produced by the late Philippe Zdar (one half of Cassius) - also responsible for applying award winning touches to albums by Phoenix and Cat Power, Domino is calling the record "a celebration of joy but recognises the struggle it can take to get to that point of happiness". Our tips: album opener "Melody Of Love" and the '80s trance-pop that is "Hungry Child".

Review: Hot Chip continue to occupy a unique space in British music. Yet despite their standing as a bunch of polymaths just as at home with pure pop as experimental diversions, what continues to truly separate them from all or any contemporaries is a rich melancholy to their sound, and it's this which looms pleasantly large on 'Why Make Sense'. The songwriting of Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard has never sounded sharper, not their beat-driven yet tastefully spare sound more addictive. Now as ever, no-one can reconcile human emotion and machine-like rhythm in quite the same fashion as this maverick outfit.
