90 Percent Of Me Is You
Amral's Trinidad Cavaliers - "90 Percent Of Me Is You"
Veriable Reluctance - "Blow In My Ear"
Review: 2 Rare West Indian funk tunes, Side A is a version of Gwen McCrae's soul and funk classic "90% Of Me Is You" from Trinidad's finest steelpan band Amral's Trinidad Cavaliers, this tune is seriously rare, originally only pressed in small quantities and sold around the Caribbean. On the flip is a wicked instrumental funk cut by Veriable Reluctance who are actually the Mohawks in disguise !!!

Moving Rivers (5:56)
Review: Talented Italian collective Aura Safari features well known Italian house producer Nicolas amongst other fine musicians. They have released a fine album on UK label Church but now head to their homeland's Hell Yeah for a debut EP full of magic. 'Lagos Connect' fuses afro drumming with house beats, lush synth work and glowing melodies to make for something beautifully grown up and musical as well as danceable. After the reprise and dub comes 'Morning Rivers,' a super slinky and seductive jazz-funk number with glowing, golden chords and subtle cosmic rays of light.

Brazil 45 Boxset Vol 2: Curated By DJ Marky (Record Store Day RSD 2021)
DJ MARKY / VARIOUS
Cat: MRB 7173. Rel: 26 Jun 21
Marcos Valle - "Os Grilos" (2:32)
Robson Jorge & Lincoln Olivetti - "Eva" (5:49)
Orlandivo - "Tamanco No Samba" (3:39)
Elis Regina - "Noves Fora" (2:24)
Bebeto - "Agua Marinha" (3:07)
Joyce - "Aldeia De Ogum" (4:35)

Trio Mocoto - "Nao Adianta" (4:10)
Dominguinhos - "Baiao Violado" (3:57)
Jorge Ben - "Take It Easy My Brother Charles" (2:38)
Review: Anyone who has heard DJ Marky do one of his "non D&B" sets will know that his love of funk, soul, disco and boogie is real, while there's far more classic Brazilian music in his record collection than some may expect. It makes sense then that he's been asked to provide the follow-up to DJ Format's Brazil 45s box set and pick some vintage carnival-ready gems of his own from Mr Bongo's bulging vaults. There are naturally some stone-cold classics present - see Jorge Ben's floor-slayer 'Take it Easy My Brother Charles' and the boogie-era smoothness of Robson Jorge and Lincoln Olivetta's 'Eva' - but also plenty of lesser-known samba and MPB gems stretched across the five "45s".

Since I Was A Little Girl (3:33)
Straight Talk (3:28)
Review: For their latest dive into the depths of funk history, Athens of the North travels back to 1978 and the debut of John Hawes and Velma Bunch's obscure Hard Drivers project. The record initially appeared on Hawes' own short-lived imprint, and his since become a sought after 7" amongst serious collectors. "Since I Was A Little Girl" is a disco-era funk gem, with guest singer Vivian Lee providing a brilliantly confident vocal to compliment Hawes and Bunch's driving, horn-heavy backing track. On the flip you'll find original B-side "Straight Talk", a touching torch song full of harmony backing vocals, impassioned builds, and lyrics capable of melting even the stoniest of hearts.

In The Dust (3:30)
Review: Mishell Ivon and Vincent Kwok are back and combining their skills once more with this brilliant bouncy new funk outing on The Sleepers. The first tune on this pocket-rocket of a 7" is 'High', a funky weapon that is high on life and built around well-syncopated drums and a percussive bassline. The icing on the cake is Mishell's vocals which weave in out of the synth stabs and lush keys, all of which are well arranged. Flip it over and you'll get lost in the funk once more with 'In The Dust' with its masterfully rhythmic bassline and more of those buttery Mishell vocals.

IMPEACH! (5:52)
Track 2 (6:13)
Review: Volume 6 of the SCM Flip Sessions is from the one and only J Rocc. It has been put together as a celebration of the end of the tenure of former President Trump, or "the most trash president in the history of the United States," as the label puts it. Across just two tunes, SCM brings you 14 flips of possibly the most sampled song in hip hop. They are Althea out together by the inimitable J Rocc with the hope being that this is a document of protest that will stand the test of time. One pressing only, 500 copies in all, do not sleep.

Review: ** Repress for the breaks dons ** The long awaited new Visioneers Limited Edition 45 produced by Marc Mac of 4hero is here at last on BBE offshoot Omniverse. No messin' here as Visioneers go straight for the funk jugular with two dope versions. Heavy horns and bongos aplenty - this is just wanted the doctor ordered. It's limited, it's hot, go get it!

Review: French label Act Of Sedition returns this week with another splendid 7' double pack. A1 is Mikeandtess with a nice edit titled 'Preacher Man' that's seriously Dusty and slo-mo as you like it, while Oldchap's 'Big At The Jazz Club' chugs along just as slowly with its locomotive and jazzy groove with rap vocals. Spirit Of Love (Mano Ariba remix - Ryuhei The Man 45 edit) (5:00)
Review: The ever on point Japanese label At Home Sound is back with another blistering brace of brilliant edits. DJ Kawasaki steps out first with a special 45 edit version of a Soul Boogie mix by the late great Phil Asher, who himself was reworking the Root Soul original 'Spirit of Love.' It's the sort of lush and feel good disco tune that comes laden with a ton of great synths and guitar riffs as well as the all important vocal. The ever green Ryuhei The Man then turns in a bossa tinged, Latin flecked edit of a Mano Ariba mix of the same tune that is packed with sunshine.

Review: Edits label Resense is back with another of its double drops and once again the arrival of another pair of DJ Oonops-selected cuts has got us all hot and in a spin. Slick Walk gets us going with the cuddly chairs and festive jazz keys of 'Young Jazzy' which slowly awaken you and get you grooving. Flip it over and Voodoocuts takes over with 'One Million Clubs', a bristling blend of DIY perc, 50 Cent vocal refrains and a noodling funk bassline that you have to hear to believe. The whole thing is brilliantly subversive and counts as another real winner for this label.

Sartorial - "ICU" (7:19)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: The fifth volume of their magnificent Super Spicy Recipe series finds the label's crew in full party effect, with the six tracks here crossing the borders from peak time dropping to essential warm up/down gear. First up, Vagabundo Club Social takes 'Beso Loco' featuring Tomjake Sax and turns up the controls to maximum fun, the Colombians throwing in tons of groove and Afro -influenced percussion, before Monsieur Van Pratt and Guatemalan singer Teff Brolo. This all-original track is leaded by the powerful soulful vocals, accompanied by a groove-infused piano which keeps the beats nicely anchored, followed by the ever dependable Reece Johnson who closes off this side. Flip it over for Bernardo Mota & Boogietraxx and the euphoric 'Keep On Doing Your Thing' before Sartorial takes proceedings into slightly jazzier territory on B2 and B3.

Review: The Fania label dives into Latin and Brazilian funk and jazz here on a special one-sided 7" that offers up Bobby Valentin's dancefloor classic 'Use It Before You Lose It.' This low-key cult classic has become hard to find at an affordable price and is a real favourite with those who know. It is three superb sweet minutes of busy and percussive funk rawness with shuffling samba undertones. The guttural vocals are impossible to genre and the jazzy keys are the icing on a fruity cake.

Bobby Valentin - "Use It Before You Lose It" (3:03)
Mongo Santamaria - "Sunshine Of Your Love" (3:23)
Review: Latin reissue specialists Raroraro (AKA Rare Latin) return to action with another double dose of devilishly hard to find goodness. On the A-side you'll find Bobby Valentin's "Use It Before You Lose It", a seminal boogaloo cut first featured on the artist's 1968 album Let's Turn On. Full of his impassioned vocals, fuzzy horns and authentic, Tito Puente-influenced rhythms, the song has lost none of its power or panache in the 48 years that have passed since it was recorded. Arguably even better is Mongo Santamaria's flipside cover of Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" - a brilliant interpretation from 1970 that sounds like an Afro-Cuban jazz take on Spanky Wilson's infamous soul re-make.

"On A Tropical Island" is a seductive number, with singer Anna Valentino sounding very much the alluring siren as she recounts a passionate love affair on a faraway island. Bottled (feat Elzhi & Jessica Care Moore) (3:44)
Review: Detroit rapper Valid's 'I'm Blessed', a bona-fide party-starter produced by DJ Dez Andres, was largely missed by most funk and hip-hop DJs when it first appeared on his limited-edition Mihaljo album back in 2019. Funk Night Records have decided it's time that the track found a bigger audience though and have pressed it onto a must-have '45'. The track itself is a bustling chunk of flute-sporting, funk-fuelled hip-hop that reminded us a little of the similarly-minded fare regularly served up by Bristol duo the Allergies. Over on the flip you'll find something deeper and more laidback: the slow and low sweetness of 'Bottled', featuring guest vocals from Elzhi and Jessica Care Moore.

Wine Or Vinegar
Review: Hailing from Moscow, Valique started his musical career in mid nineties as an arranger and musician in several electronic live projects, gradually shifting from raw jungle/industrial music to diverse forms of deep house, nu-jazz and funk/soul breaks. As an accomplished vibraphonist and percussionist he has recorded session work on various albums and recently recorded an entire album of classical Russian folk and war songs with nu-jazz/funk twist. Being a fan of the Freestyle label from day one, Valique took it upon himself to create two brand new tracks purposely made with the label in mind. We were so impressed we couldn't say no, making him the first Russian signing to Freestyle! Check the disco infused bumping house of "Taking Your Seat", with the tantalizing horns hammering the track into your subconscious. On the flip "Wine Or Vinegar" is more of the same, with blasting horns tied to the funkiest of basslines and a bumping groove.

Marcos Valle - "A Paraiba Nao E Chicago" (4:39)
Don Beto - "Nao Quero Mais" (2:11)
Review: For the latest volume in their ongoing Brazil 45s series, Mr Bongo has decided to change tack. The two tracks showcased here are from the golden age of Brazilian boogie. On the A-side you'll find Marcos Valle's "A Paraiba Nao E Chicago", a largely overlooked cut from his 1981 full-length Vontade De Rever Voce. While not as instantly as infectious as some of his better-known singles, it's still superb; a breezy, blue-eyed soul cut full of rising horns and sweet Portuguese vocals. On the B-side, you'll find Don Beto's 1978 disco-funk jam "Nao Quero Mais", a superb track that was seemingly inspired by the Doobie Brothers' "Long Train Running".

After reaching dizzying heights with his pop compositions through the 60s and 70s, he was having fun with synths and boogie cuts in the 80s, which is around the time he crafted the workout-friendly tracks 'Esterlar' and 'Bicicleta'. "Mentira" is a self-cover as Valle takes his 69 classic "Mentira Carioca" and develops the dynamic with a vocal style that's highly reminiscent of Donovan. Review: Togolese Afro-funk band Vaudou Game has been responsible for some of the most essential music on Hot Casa Music, so the arrival of a new single from them following an extended absence of three years is positive news indeed. A-side 'Bella' is little less than superb: a sparkling slab of Afro-soul in which spacey Moog lines and the band's own distinctive vocals ride a gloriously sunny, percussion-rich groove. They revert to their trademark up-tempo Togolese Afro-funk style on B-side 'Be My Wife', which adds Highlife style guitar motifs and more spacey synth sounds to a stomping, club-ready rhythm. Review: The latest 2021 Record Store Day drop includes a swathe of classic disco, soul and funk records - releases that should be in any DJ's armoury. Vaughan Mason & Crew's 'Bounce Rock Skate Roll', arguably the most famous roller-disco/roller-boogie jam of all time, is not particularly obscure, but it is a must-have. Popular with disco DJs for its squelchy synth bassline, chant-along vocals and sparkling instrumentation, the track has also long been a favourite of block party hip-hop DJs, who love doubling up its metronomic boogie breaks. This seven-inch pressing includes the original version ('Part 1', on the A-side), and the longer 'Part 2' mix that includes the extended, groove-focused instrumental sections that hip-hop jocks love to double-up. Review: It's been a pretty successful year for 45 Loves, when all is said and done. The French imprint has managed to maintain a seriously high release quality throughout one of the toughest times in modern music history. Better yet, it has been serving up exactly what most of us have needed during this impossible era - disco music laced with a positive energy and cult elec-pop bits.

Venice Beach's 'F' is certainly a party-starter, to put it mildly. Vocals straight from the backing chorus of a Tom Tom Club banger, undercarriage destined for an Ibiza terrace if they ever open again, it makes keeping still more than difficult. Flip it to find 'FF' from Jay Airlines, an altogether dustier and more stoned affair, robbing samples from Lou Reed's 'Walk On The Wild Side' and adding punchy drums to introduce some lazy dancefloor potential.

Review: First launched way back in the early 2000s, 4 Hero man Marc Mac's Visioneers project - which also features extensive contributions from fellow producer Luke Parkhouse - has tended to be a vehicle for his love of jazz and hip-hop. This two-track seven-inch single is a little different though. Title track 'Red Cactus', for example, sounds like an all-live mixture of heavy funk, the Chemical Brothers' sample-rich 'Block Rockin' Beats' and the kind of library funk that once appeared on the soundtracks of obscure spaghetti westerns. Flipside 'Issmak' is, if anything, even funkier and heavier - a kind of Blaxploitation-late 60s spy movie soundtrack mash-up full to bursting with heavy drum breaks, heavier bass and flanged guitar licks aplenty.

The inclusion of guest musicians from around the globe added real richness to the compositions and now two of the standouts get cut to 45 rpm. 'Raid' is a nice laid-back funk roller with cute melodies over lazy drums that bring to mind a gentle afternoon in the park. Flip it over for 'Hurts So Bad' (instrumental) which is just as airy and organic.

What It Mean (Battle cut)
Today (dub)
Review: This 45rpm features alternate versions of tracks from Marc Mac's Visioneers project. As always with Visioneers, the album reimagined hip-hop's foundational sounds and often started from scratch and focused on a key sample from the original track. Whether recontextualising a classic or creating something entirely new, the hallmark of a Visioneers record is its live instrumentation, which belies Marc Mac's ability to manipulate hip-hop's signature swing with a new type of mastery. 'What It Mean' and 'Today' are both standout from the album.

Wanted Dead Or Alive (3:27)
Little People (3:30)
Review: Those with knowledge of rare groove should be well aware of The Voices of East Harlem's 'Wanted Dead Or Alive', a 1973 album track from the band's eponymous second album that was reissued in 1988 due to its popularity on London's rare groove scene. Here the superb, string-laden, Leroy Hutson produced classic appears on seven-inch for the first time, courtesy of Dynamite Cuts. This time round it comes backed with another killer jam from the same album: the proto-disco soul swell of 'Little People', which was famously sampled by Young Disciples on their 1991 skit 'Get Yourself Together'. Essential stuff all told.

Spies Are Watching Me (7:15)
Le Disco Des Capitales (6:45)
Review: Sounds like it came out of Lagos in 1971, actually written and recorded in Lyon in 2015: Voilaaa is the brainchild of Bruno Hovart whose long relationship with Favorite goes way back to his days as Patchworks, Mr President and The Dynamics. Recording on a whole host of vintage machines and calling upon local African singers both cuts have a real authentic sense of realness; "Spies Are Watching Me" drives with big horns and swooning strings which isn't dissimilar to the work of The Movers, while the TY Boys-esque "Le Disco Des Capitales" is a heavier, more concentrated slab of floor-minded disco where the groove takes more of a forefront role. Apparently there's a whole album of this cooking... We can't wait to hear it.

PCH 76
Review: Funk Night serve up two joyously contrasting compositions from Volcano Kpache: the playfully titled "Ooohh Weee" is a turbo-charged slice of carnivalian percussion with added whistles, cowbells and vocal screams. "PCH 76" is about a third of the tempo but just as funky thanks to its elasticated bassline that wriggles and worms beneath the swaggering halfstep breakbeats.

Review: Word on the street was that Volcov's edit series was supposed to finish two releases ago in 2010. Clearly gluttons for punishment - and perhaps just a tad inspired to show the current league of editors how to do it properly - Slam Jam return with five more discerningly curated re-cuts. From the frenetic bongo and minor-key chorus warbles of "City" to the 80s Wonder-inspired electro boogie of "Nine", this reinforces Slam Jam's premier position when it comes to both obscure selection skills and creative editing.

Linda Negra (4:58)
Review: Berlin-based Voodoocuts knows how to mix up floor-filing sounds from across a range of genres and eras. Now the sonic shapeshifter serves up a first EP for Adeen that packs in five killer cuts. 'La Culebra' kicks off with big horns and Latin rhythms which carry on through the dance-heavy 'Mi Amor'. 'B-boy Paco' completes the first side of vinyl with lively rhythms, horn stabs and florid Spanish vocals. 'Que Rico' kicks off on the flip with another dense arrangement packed with cowbells, funky bass riffs, woodblock hits, shakers and plenty more. 'Linda Negra' is a sleazy yet seductive samba shuffle that brings the heat and will get any party heated up.

Loopita (3:09)
Review: Serial editor Voodoocuts returns on brand new vinyl-only label Juice On Wax with two more straight up party slappers. "The Fool" brings the fever with big Motown dynamics and a rich gutsy vocal that will pull everyone closer to the dance. "Loopita" takes us further south to Cuba with a heel-kicking mambo that's laced with toxic levels of percussion. Start worrying if your hips aren't swaying by the end of this record. No fooling around here...

The Fool (4:46)
Loopita (3:07)
Review: Rising star Voodoocuts has previously delivered killer re-edits and remixes for the likes of Matsuana Records and Resense. Here he strikes out on his own, delivering a limited, coloured-vinyl reissue of one of his most sought-after 45s, the original version of which landed way back in 2017. On the A-side he sticks a rocket under Etta James' funk number 'Only a Fool', brilliantly re-imagining it as a weighty disco-funk number full of cut-up horn stabs, layered-up percussion and four-to-the-floor drums. On the flip he chops, loops and rearranges Nico Gomez' Latin psych-funk classic 'Lupita', turning it into the kind of breathless, percussive-rich monster that B-Boys and B-Girls the world over love so much.

Mambo Mambo! (4:01)
Review: It was a cool four years ago we last heard from Voodoocuts and the Juice On Wax label, but out of nowhere here they come with a serious party swagger packed onto a nifty slice of 7". 'El Chino' is a fiery Latin roller revolving around a killer break, nimble vibes and a steady piano hook. Balancing the live instrumentation with some studio craft gives this one a modern, uptempo feel which should find it slipping into all kinds of DJ sets with ease. 'Mambo Mambo" has a raunchier feel, with a clattering beat and seriously sizzling brass romping all over the tumbledown grooves.

Review: New vinyl-only label Matasuna Records enters the fray with a stated focus on reworks of rare & forgotten music treasures from all over the world. The debut release, a 12" featuring four DJ-friendly edits from Voodoocuts and SoulBrigada sets the tone and has a fine titular pun to boot in Afreaka! Voodoocuts takes the A-side duties, pairing up the raw '70s Ivory Coast funk of "Kelja" with the steamy Latin styles of "Tortoise Loops". Those wanting something a bit more disco in sound will gravitate towards the "Hustleman" edit from SoulBrigada which originates from West Africa and has a killer horn line!!! "Madera" sees SoulBrigada look to Cape Verde for source material and features some subtle additions.

Review: Voxatone (a.k.a. Markey Funk and Shay Landa) serve up this final release of the year for the Delights label here. It is funk music made from racks of vintage synth gear and with both eyes set firmly on the more psychedelic end of the cosmic scale. First up is 'Figure I.108' which is beautifully evocative synth-led psych-funk and then comes a funk chase through outer space on 'Figure III.122.' Both tunes are absolute winners which really take your mind and imagination into interplanetary new worlds.

Review: Veteran Swiss DJ/producer Alex Attias has long been one of Europe's more versatile and open-minded DJs, so it's fitting that BBE have given him a chance to flex his curatorial muscles. LillyLillyGood, which shares its name with a monthly party and label Attias runs, was inspired by Attias's desire to present "really good grooves that people want to dance to or listen to or home". He's done just that, whizzing through an unmixed selection that giddily flits between trippy, polyrhythmic acid madness (Grooveman Spot), jaunty jazz-funk (Freeeze, Cro Magnon's ultra-deep hook-up with Roy Ayers), synth-fuelled broken beat business (Tatham, Mensah, Lord and Ranks), deliciously spacey deep house (the Zanzibar remix of Nicole Willis's "Curiosity") and killer disco (Attias's own edit of Velvet Hammer's "Party Hearty").

Review: Capturing the essence and feels of the long-standing event he runs in his Swiss hometown of Lausanne, veteran digger and selector Attias presents a brand new compendium of sweet compositions that sum up he's at creatively and spiritually. Gems on gems on gems: highlights that we guarantee will appeal to your good tastes and dancefloor include the hypnotic vibraphone wash of Cro-Magnon's "Midnight Magic", the slept-on jittering funk of Tatham, Mensah, Lord & Ranks's "Cascade" and Material and Nona Hendrix's ludicrously funky, ultimately sleazy slinker "Over & Over". We suspect you'll be playing this record over and over, too...

Review: With 'breaking' making its debut in the 2024 Paris Olympics, it seems an apt time to go back to where it all began and showcase some of the music that first made break-dancers move in the early years of hip-hop culture. Soul Jazz Records clearly agrees, hence this two-disc retrospective of early 'breaker' favourites curated by Arthur Baker - a man who's productions and remixes soundtracked many dancefloor battles in the early 80s. It's a suitably strong selection all told, with dusty funk, soul and funk-rock favourites (Johnny Bristol, James Brown, The Jimmy Castor Bunch, Spanky Wilson) being joined by disco-funk jams (Herman Kelly and Life), extra-percussive workouts (Manu Dibango, Mongo Santamaria, Candido) and a smattering of key Baker productions (Afrika Bambaata and Soul Sonic Force's 'Planet Rock' and his own infectious 'Breakers Revenge').
