Now the whole thing has been stripped back to its instrumental core and gets served up here on a standalone limited red vinyl album. It's just as good in this format as the original and allows the skilfulness of the musicians to really shine.

Review: Originally released on Flying Dutchman in 1973, Leon Thomas' Blues and the Soulful Truth is an outstanding slice of soul funk from one of the genre's all time greats. Thomas came to fame working with Pharoah Sanders on 'The Creator Has A Master Plan', but on this album he was in full flight writing his own songs, backed up by Pee Wee Ellis as a conductor and with Bob Thiele as producer. Thomas had an unflinching approach to his message, best heard on incredible cuts like 'Shape Your Mind To Die', but there's tenderness to match the toughness. Just listen to the sweetness of 'China Doll' on this long overdue reissue and take in the full spectrum of the Leon Thomas sound.

Review: American r&b and funk band Tower of Power hail from Oakland, California and have had several lead vocalists, the most notable being Lenny Williams. Their most successful album was their self-titled third long player in 1973 - the first Williams featured on. It went gold in the US and has their most well-known single 'So Very Hard to Go' alongside plenty of other silky soul sounds that go from the downbeat and string-laced wallowings of 'Will I Ever Find A Love?' to the more funky and upbeat grooves of 'Get Yo' Feet Back On The Ground.'

Review: A record unlike any other, 'Is That What You Want' is a fascinating slice of what some might call 'outsider soul', but even that label can't do full justice to the music here. Part of a wholly unrecognised community of DIY musicians living in East Philadelphia in the 1980s, Lee Tracy and Isaac Manning were a vocal, instrumental and production duo whose efforts flew sorely under the radar at the time that they laid these slick slices of experimental joy to tape. Bleeding a shocking transfusion of gospel, electro, lo-fi, funk and soul, this is a worthy slice of Afrofuturism existing outside the jazz connotation. "We never went to no studio," retorts Manning, showing off the pair's homespun ingenuity. Bolstered by a slew of DIY videos shot in Lee's front garden, this has everything from black Southern IDM to machine-glitched proto-raps. It deserves all the recognition it can get.

It has been fully remastered and comes with original artwork and mirrors the eclectic sounds of Mandrill, The Blackbyrds and Kool and the Gang. Tribe, led by multi-instrumentalist Earl J Foster and producer Big Dee Ervin, blended funk, jazz, rock, Latin and soul into a singular style on the album which was originally released independently in 1977 and has been out of print for over 45 years. Dedication is a masterpiece that offers a deep, spaced-out fusion.

Review: Question: who is Benny Trokan? Answer: many things to many people. Bassist in Spoon, Lee Fields' Expressions, Reigning Sound, and The Jay Vons. Solo artist of exquisite individuality. A nostalgia-hued, retro-leaning music maker who still manages to make innovative sounds despite their clear nod to a golden age of psychedelic-garage-surf rock now gone by. Do You Still Think of Me? marks his debut for Wick Records and embraces a broad range of 1960s styles, from sweet soulful serenades to twangy Badlands panoramas and jangling pop-rock. All of which is excellent, and highly original. Hardly the easiest trick to pull off, Trokan has re-emphasised his position as one of the finest songwriters of his time. Just in case there were any doubts about this remarkably fresh-sounding veteran.

Review: A year after the first superb volume, The Key To Our Love Vol.2 again dedicates itself to the sweetest soul sounds of black and brown musicians from days gone by. The label say that each release is put together in direct collaboration with the creators, which is also important practice. And so to the sounds - they come from the late 60s onwards and were all put out on private press indie labels so have remained rather obscure. There is heart-aching material like Andre & Zero Plus's 'Sparkle In A Woman's Eye' with its sumptuous strings and vocal harmonies and more sentimental lullabies like Fred Moss's 'I'll Always Love You.' Perfection.

Review: Sweet Soul Harmony From the Golden Era is a new album from The Lowriders that amalgamates two previous This Is Lowrider Soul CDs. The Kent Soul label has put together the 14 tunes they think best represent the sounds Los Angelenos, often of Mexican descent, love so much and are famous for having blasting from their low riding motors. Review: It was France's l'Arome Productions that had first reissued this spectacular selection of Ethiopian soul and funk back in 2009 but, since then, this particular compilation has turned into something of a cult-classic within the digging world, and it has been repressed by Heavenly Sweetness on three different occasions. None of this is in the least bit surprising given just how special the sounds on here truly are, and if you're a fan of Mulatu then this will hit the spot big time! Moreover, tunes by the likes of Samuel Belay, Mahmoud Ahmed - who has appeared on Mississippi's reissue schedule - and Girma Beyene go much further than the usual dosage of far-out funk, leading us to a tense, dimly lit scenario that is both hypnotic and totally different from anything else. Highly recommended, a timeless slice of history.

Review: The Numero group can hardly ever do any wrong and, as per usual, they've steamrolled their way to the top of our charts with a monstrously good new soul compilation. It was ten years ago this year that they released their Homeschooled compilation, which also championed the young talents of the 70s soul scene in the USA, so The Afterschool Special feels like a natural release from their end. And there's just so much talent in here. Number 66 in the series features must-have 7" rarities such as "Runnin' Wild" by Scott Three, who already sounds as mature as any adult, the squeakier voice of Jimi Hill, a gloriously funky little head-trip in "I Love You Still" by Cash, and so much more. This compilation is literally four sides of pure heat, and it's certainly yet another highly recommended Numero bombshell.

Review: Five years ago, Sban Records unleashed Harde Smart, a fine collection of Flemish and Dutch records of the 1970s heavily influenced by Black American funk, soul, and dance music. This belated follow-up focuses on the 1980s, a decade in which the influence of American AOR, disco-rock, boogie, synth-pop and electro could be heard across plenty of releases by Dutch and Belgian bands. Highlights include the blue-eyed, synth-powered dreaminess of 'Drugs' by Omar & The New Sound, the P-funk-influenced flavours of Joost Belinfante's 'Zonder Woorden', the Zouk-splashed tropical boogie of De Div's 'Teken De Tijd', and the post-punk new-wave eccentricity of Nadagen's 'Onder 4 Ogen', which sounds like a Dutch take on Sheffield band Chakk.

The first volume presented the best in HI-NRG and POP and this one, a double album, focusses on Soul & Disco. All the names you'd expect are here from Prince to Daryl Hall & John Oates, Loose Ends to Rufus & Chaka Khan, so it is a useful one indeed.

Review: The Colour Purple is one of those films that went against the odds in the wrong way - the second adaptation of Alice Walker's novel about a Black couple living in the Deep South around the turn of the 20th Century, it built on a legacy of acclaimed literature and cinema (Steven Spielberg's 1985 film), came with a strong cast and had $100million spent on it. Yet, after its release in 2023, despite great reviews and multiple award nominations, it grossed just $67million at the global box office. Musicals aren't for everyone, of course, although it's hard to find fault here. Songs range from super dramatic, almost tribal and certainly stage-filling epics, through to kitchen sink soul, roots, blues, R&B, hip hop, and power pop, and listening through even without the visual focus, leaves a big, long-lasting impression.
