Soul Of Haringey (reissue)
Pip Archer - "Time To Boogie" (4:52)
Andrea Lyn - "Hold On To Your Heart" (3:32)
Jennifer Viban - "Miracles" (4:00)
The Curruthers Brothers - "What Do Ya?" (4:09)
Boss - "Ease The Tension" (3:15)
Review: A fantastic dub disco, funk and electro record straight from the heart of North London. First released in 1986, 'Soul Of Haringey' emerged as the sole release on the ultra-rare Advance Level Enterprise imprint, information on which is, even now, extremely difficult to track down and source. Among the featuring artists on the release are Pip Archer, Andrea Lynn, Jennifer Viban, The Curruthers Brothers, and Boss, all of whom are almost equally obscure, and only a few of whom ever went on to release anything else. It's these kinds of records, seemingly unassailed by the material urgencies of working life or careerism, that beguile us the most. 'Time To Boogie' is as raw and uncut as can be, its trilling synth bells and double-claps revealing some early stirrings of UK grime in the track's latter half. Then there's the downtempo soul of 'Hold On To Your Heart' by Lynn, as smooth as smooth can be, while Viban's 'Miracles' is an equally blissful prayer to the electro-disco-funk tutelary god, with its numinous snare bursts and adhesively soft pad divans swearing fealty to the belief in miracles. Boss' and The Curruthers Brothers' contributions are just as creamy, offering two further authentic, homespun falsetto'ers for assuaging heartbreak and redemption.

Review: When it comes to mash-ups and unofficial reworks, sometimes the simplest ideas are the ones that make for the most effective versions. That's certainly the case here, as Soul Mates main man Amerigo Gazaway crafts four slabs of funk/hip-hop fusion fusing funky beats with hip hop accapellas plus the all essential instrumental versions...only 300 copies. Nathan Haines - "Thorne Bay Bossa" (3:35)
Jazz Juice - "Los Chicos" (3:32)
Review: New Zealand-born Nathan Haines picked up a fine reputation for his jazz playing skills as early as his teenage years. He has recorded more than a dozen albums since the mid-nineties and for this new one on Na Vitrola Brazil he takes care of a-side 'Thorne Bay Bossa' which is a heavy, piano-led jazz workout with shuffling drums and shakers. On the flip are Alain Eskinasi and Graham Lusty aka Jazz Juice for an even more energetic tune. 'Los Chicos' is built on a succulent samba beat with lead oboe, mad keys and plenty of woody percussion making you shake every bone in your body.

Special Technique Of Love (Jim Dunloop Shaolin Soul edit) (3:08)
Review: The mighty Dusty Donuts return to Queensbridge where they encounter a 'Lost Girl' featured on a legendary mixtape by one of QB's finest. This bouncy, choppy Marc Hype & Jim Dunloop Late Night Remix is sure to ignite any gathering. On the flipside, the vibes shift from Queensbridge to Staten Island and bring a special sound to work the crowd - this heavy soul classic arrives in true Shaolin style with choppy, dark soul chords and classic hip-hop beats. It's a track that commands attention with the drums but also locks in head and heart.

J Dilla - "Geek Down" (1:25)
The Jimi Entley Sound - "Charlies Theme" (3:09)
Review: In a rare backwards castling and killer checkmate, Friendly Records boldly re-press one of J Dilla's most beloved cuts, 'Geek Down', which appeared on his landmark Donuts LP. Known for its sample of the 2001 dark funk tune 'Charlies Theme' by The Jimi Entley Sound, this indelible, ringed hors d'oeuvre was essential for the critics' collective assessment that the 2005 LP was his magnum opus. Trailing pink sprinkles behind it, 'Geek Down' made Dilla's name. Sadly, the title would seem predict the artist's death just three days after the record's release. Dilla was a true productive geekazoid, and it shows in this track, with its untameable, above-the-law Western guitar wahs and tense, lilting strings keeping the goosebump hairs stood aright. The originally sampled track appears on the B, still only part-revealing the magic trick.

I Believe (4:10)
Brazil (3:33)
Review: J. Rawls is something of a super producer who has worked with many legends of the game such as The Beastie Boys and Talib Kweli. After his sold-out 2022 album, JazzHop, he follows it up with a couple of the many superb collabs he has done over the years. 'I Believe' is a steamy and low-slung house tune with warming bass and buttery vocal coos power by crispy boom bap. As the title suggests, 'Brazil' is a summery sound that takes you to Latin America with paddy kicks, wooden percussion and big horns that all get the good vibes flowing.

Braziliiance Bonus Beats (3:24)
Review: A full quarter of a century ago now, Rawls made musical magic with the legends that are Mos Def aka Yasiin Bey and Talib Kweli, hip hop dons in their own right but also known collectively as Black Star. That was on the top tune 'Brown Skin Lady' and now 25 years on Rawls has gone back to revisit the original session sounds. He has sampled them and given them a fresh breath of air as well as reworking the beats, this time very much for the dance floor, and with plenty of Brazilian flavour. On the flip, you also get a flame-hot instrumental 'Braziliiance Bonus Beats'.

Review: Hip-hop head and dizzyingly dexterous DJ J Rocca is back with another musical celebration of the exit from office of the worst president in the history of the United States of America. This is the 6th such volume of 'Impeach' and it is a tight woven tapestry and skilful mash-up of no fewer than 14 flips of surely one of the most sampled songs in the history of hip hop. Masterfully mixed together and limited to 500 copies, this is a strong sonic statement that will stand the test of time.

Review: Volume 6 of the SCM Flip Sessions is from the one and only J Rocc. It has been put together as a celebration of the end of the tenure of former President Trump, or "the most trash president in the history of the United States," as the label puts it. Across just two tunes, SCM brings you 14 flips of possibly the most sampled song in hip hop. They are Althea out together by the inimitable J Rocc with the hope being that this is a document of protest that will stand the test of time. One pressing only, 500 copies in all, do not sleep.

The Jackson Bros, a still mysterious outfit on our end, throw down the absolute truth on the vocal edit of "Thank You", a glorious and majestic pseudo disco ride that'll please everyone from dad to grandma. Little Orphan Boy (Two Soul Fusion instrumental) (14:00)
Review: Josh Milan and Louie Vega are real heavyweights and as Soul Fusion they step up here to remix the legendary 'Little Orphan Boy' which is the second single taken from album 'This Is Brian Jackson', the veteran artist's first true solo LP in over 20 years. They do so across four different versions and give it a vintage treatment. The extended 'Two Soul Fusion' mix brings back golden era of Masters at Work with a Latin-infused percussion groove while the 'Downtempo' remix lets Brian Jackson's vocals ride over a stripped back but just as soulful arrangement.

Review: This new Brian Jackson package 'Miami Wata' brings together traditional African sounds and modern Latin house music in a captivating fashion. Jackson's rendition of a traditional African song draws on the sacred lands of the Dogan in Mali and the rich rhythms of Ghana, paying tribute to all the different African cultures that have made for such a diverse tapestry of world music. The original comes with serval remixes, dubs and cosmic reworks from the one and only Body & Soul man Joe Claussell who takes it into all new but equally spiritual realms. It makes for an epic double 12" from BBE.

Heavennnnnn (edit) (15:41)
Salvation Steps (6:31)
Little James Birthday (edit) (10:05)
Review: On 'Heavennnnnn', Detroit vocalist and producer Deon Jamar evinces soul salacity like no other, following up his last Altars LP with a three-tracker of shimmering thymic neo soul, tempered by electronic smoothening and fine motor skills from recording to fine-tuning. Again released on the experimental and newly inaugural Black Music label - conceived as an "art exhibit, concert, and party series founded by Deon and Brian Oscar" - these are soul stopovers to contrast the earlier three-parter's drastic Detroit breakdowns. The title track has a Rhodes line to die for, its trembling amplitude constructively interfering with any sense of forestalled time we might've brought to the listening experience beforehand; 'Salvation Steps' and 'Little James Birthday' provide further versatility over understated percussions and G-funk slapping radio leakage. A promising continuation in sound by a label you'd best keep your eye on.

Review: Bob James continues to innovate and remain revealing decades after first serving new standards in jazz funk. His latest album is another one that will connect with fans from across the ages not least because it features a rather prominent collaboration with the legendary hip-hop turntablist and producer DJ Jazzy Jeff who is best known for his partnership with Will Smith both in music and the hit US TV sitcom the Fresh Prince of Bell Air. Here Bob and Jazzy join up for 'That Bop' which is a thumping dance cut with big pano hooks that comes all those years after Jeff first samples James in something of a lovely full circle moment.

Cosmic Girl (Dimitri From Paris remix instrumental) (7:08)
Review: In the summer of 1996 you couldn't escape Jamiroquai's "Cosmic Girl", a sing-along fusion of disco and jazz-funk that became massive in clubs thanks to a slick David Morales remix. Here it gets some hush-hush new remixes courtesy of re-edit maestro and disco king Dimitri From Paris. The French veteran's A-side remix takes the track further towards classic disco territory, placing swirling electronic effects around the band's familiar vocals and instrumentation. Arguably even better though is the flipside "Dubwize" version, which cleverly re-imagines the cut as a mid-80s style NYC proto-house dub. A string-laden instrumental version of the A-side remix completes a rather tidy package.

Review: Dimitri From Paris' Le Edits imprint returns with another triumph, infusing their style into the music landscape with meticulous care and attention to detail. This time, the spotlight falls on UK jazz-funk pioneers, Jamiroquai, and their 1999 hit 'Canned Heat' from the album 'Synkronized.' Dimitri takes listeners on a transformative journey deeper into the funkmosphere, delivering a euphoric disco odyssey of epic proportions. The Side-1 features an extended, nearly nine minute vocal version of 'Canned Heat,' showcasing both Jamiroquai's unparalleled talent and Dimitri's mastery in crafting dancefloor sensations from classic records. Complementing this is a stellar Dubstrumental rendition on the second side. With a no re-press guarantee and a commitment to uncompromising quality, each Le Edits release is a testament to Dimitri's dedication to restoring sophistication and excellence to the re-edit game. From the highest-grade tip-on heavy-duty sleeves to outer protective covers, every detail is meticulously crafted, affirming Le Edits' commitment to prioritizing quality over quantity.

Review: Staten Island's The Jazztronauts return to Nu Tone with a smooth cruising single which capitalises on the slick fusion style they do so well. There's a reflective, season-shifting mood to 'This Thing Of Ours' which feels perfectly suited to the time of year, whether it's David Giordano's wistful guitar chops or Josh Glazer and Shawn Rhoades' brass section pealing out over the laconic rhythm. 'When It Hits' on the flip is a more sprightly affair which sees drummer AJ Pantaleo setting a snappy pace and Jesse Blum flexing out on the keys, once again maintaining the buttery smooth style the band are so well loved for.

Evoke (3:55)
Beat Hopper (The 3rd Session) (4:13)
Review: Deep house on a 7" is a rather rather thing but this 45rpm certainly is worth your while. It is the first we have heard from Jazztronik, all producer and keysman Ryota Nozaki, since his Universal Language album last year. He has been at this now for 24 years and brings all that know how to these two jams. 'Evoke' is a lively broken beat workout with squelchy bass and improvised jazz keys that are restless and energizing with rich leads. 'Beat Hopper' (The 3rd Session) appears on the flip with more innovative keys and party-pumping broken beats. A tasteful duo for sure.

Samurai (11:57)
Samurai (beats) (5:15)
Samurai (Piano) (4:35)
Review: Jazztronik is the free-form music project headed up by Japanese artist Ryota Nozaki. He has put out no fewer than 24 albums since his first in 1999, and in 2005 he put out Samurai. The lead single from that record now gets its own pressing treatment on hi son label and comes with two alternate versions. The original is a shiny, glossy and uplifting nu jazz tune with big broken beats and even big piano solos layered over the top. Some vocal ad libs add a contemporary edge and ensure the whole thing takes off. A more striped back Beats version will be perfect for more serous dancing and the Piano version does what it says on the tin.

Review: The JB's, if somehow you didn't know - and if you didn't but you're a funk fan who is perusing these pages, have a word with yourself - were James Brown's super tight backing troupe. They are the musicians who provided the godfather all of the tight jams, big breaks and firing horn blow-outs that gave him much such potency. Everything they serve up sells out in quick fashion and this limited edition and translucent yellow 7" Na Vitrola Brazil is likely to do so as well. It features two medley tracks that pack in plenty of different sounds and both will blow up any spot.

Sweet My Ear (4:40)
Sweet My Ear (instrumental) (4:38)
Review: Berlin based Afro-Soul duo Jembaa Groove consists of bass player and composer Yannick Nolting and singer-percussionist Eric Owusu. Backed up by a further five players to form a septet, their music aims to cement the reputation of West African musics like highlife with the frenetic pace of Berlin's underground music scene. 'Sweet My Ear' is their latest single, packed with a steady Ghanaian funk, muted horn section, and multi-layered rhythm section, effecting a casually shuffly sound. With the instrumental in tow too, you can expect this heater sate all ears around, and to deliver on its intention to encourage spontaneous romantic encounters.

I'm Gonna Love You (5:48)
Review: Cannonball Records' Tesla Groove is now embarking on a brand new collaboration with Italy's Irma Records. First up is this, a first ever pressing of 'Straight to You' and 'I'm Gonna Love You' on the same 7". They are by Acid Jazz collective Jestofunk, which was made up of three Italian DJs namely Claudio Moz-Art Rispoli, Francesco Farias and Blade and Alessandro Staderini. They dropped a fine album in 1994, Love in a Black Dimension, from which these tunes are taken. The A-side is a flute led jazz-fusion cut with summery warmth and lavish arrangements, and the flip is a disco tinged scorcher with mid-tempo drums, sustained strong synths and a great soul vocals.
