Review: Pierre Bastien and Michel Banabila are bonafide musical visionaries who have come totters for the first time on this debut collaborative album, Baba Soiree. They have achieved plenty over their careers in electronic music and draw on all of it here as they fuse their own idiosyncratic styles into something new. The churning and rigid mechanical loops and experimental instrumental setups come from Bastien while the sound designs and superbly chosen and assembled samples come from Banabila. Sitting somewhere between dance floor fun and avant garde invention this is a great piece of sonic alchemy.

Review: It's often the albums that fall between the cracks that are the greatest. Violin virtuoso and singer Andrew Bird and Americana singer-songwriter Madison Cunningham shine a light on the underrated pre-Fleetwood Mac gem of an album, Buckingham Nicks, by fully covering it. Released five years before Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham went on to have mega success with Rumours, Buckingham Nicks was such a flop commercially that they were dropped by their label Polydor. But it is a cracking album and in covering it in their own style and having a palpably strong musical connection as a duo themselves, Bird and Cunningham have done it absolute justice and changed it. They have shed the 70s pop sheen of the original and made something more timeless to behold. 'Stephanie' is moody, majestic and cosmic and 'Without A Leg To Stand On' is one of the most stirring vocal performances you'll hear in 2024. A highly rewarding listen throughout.

Review: Clifford Brown is one of history's finest trumpet payers. Here he adds his style to nine engaging tunes recorded in 1955 with the Max Roach Quintet. One of the leading hard bop gangs of the time, tenor saxophonist Harold Land, pianist Richie Powell, and bassist George Morrow all featured and gave rise to these lively and energetic cuts. The likes of 'Cherokee' certainly blow away any cobwebs with the fluid and florid trumpets dancing over sizzling drums, and the more swinging (and excellently named) 'Gerkin For Perkin' is super short but sweet.

Review: Since launching two years ago, Tony Higgins and Mike Peden's J-Jazz series has become an indispensable guide to Japan's modern jazz scene. The third volume continues in a similar vein to its predecessors, gathering together sought-after, overlooked and little-known cuts from across the jazz spectrum (think spiritual, modal, fusion, post-bop and Latin), all of which were recorded by Japanese artists in the 1960s, '70s and '80s. Review: Unlike most disco re-edit EPs, Salsoul's latest instalment of 'Reflex Revisions' are "proper" remixes, making full use of original master stems and session tapes sourced from the parent artists themselves. With all four tracks handled by French producer and remixer The Reflex, we know we're in good hands here - he's been at it since 2012. Reflex Revisions don't just add a janky kick beneath a beatgridded 16-bar loop, but rather, they move and sway with the tracks' original feels. Our case in point: 'A Little Love' completely reimagines the drum section found on Aurra's 1983 original, making the whole sonic experience much clearer and brighter. As much can be said for Metropolis' downtempo 'I Love New York', on which Reflex here makes the song grander, wider. Compared to most re-editors, this is an impressive feat occurring in a different ballpark.

Islandman's signature balearic sound gives new force to Temiz's fiery percussion, reframing Berbero?lu's Anadolu folk influences into a distinctly dance-ready sound. Stand out track 'Fidayda' eases us into the trio's expertly improvised soundworld with an alluring, oscillating saz riff. When Temiz's percussion enters the mix, it arrives with a controlled unpredictability capable of leaving listeners in a trance. Review: Acclaimed South African folk singer Vusi Mahlasela joined forces with singer songwriter Norman Zulu as well as the superb Swedish jazz and soul collective Jive Connection for this album back in 2002. It was thought to be a lost recording until it recently showed up and now gets fully revived by Strut. There are strong political links between these countries which no doubt adds weight to this musical link up. It is a great exchange of cultures from parables to laments on child abuse to tunes that fuse reggae, jazz and post-punk with township styles.

Review: Blue Note Records has joined forces with Universal Music Group Africa for a series of special albums, and this is Makhathini's second. In the Spirit of Ntu is his tenth album in all and a real landmark from the visionary pianist, healer, composer and improviser. All of his many themes and conceptual notions get distilled into a comprehensive yet accessible 10-track record with nods to John Coltrane and Abdullah Ibrahim amongst others, but also cultural references to the sounds of the South African landscape. Many of the country's most talented young musicians play on the record including saxophonist Linda Sikhakhane, trumpeter Robin Fassie Kock and vibraphonist Dylan Tabisher.

Review: Meteora is the name of a chain of Greek-Byzantine monasteries that were built around the 14th century, as well as being the title and source of inspiration for a 2003 Linkin Park album and this one by Denmark based jazz artist Makiko Hirabayashi, who learned about it while on tour. This is the fifth album from her too and is one that revels in structure - their intricacies, delicacies and the impact of space - or in this case, silence. Minimal piano pieces, occasional bass sounds, celestial keys and microscopic ambience all make up what is an evocative and filmic listen.

Review: Malcolm Jiyane has fast become a key player in the contemporary South African Jazz scene. He has variously been dubbed "a new star in the southern sky" and "the future Jonas Gwangwa" by journalists in the know and has shown promise ever since his teenage years when he worked under legendary mentor, Bra Johnny Mekoa. He is a trombone master but plays several different instruments and has scored films as well as made albums. Now Malcolm Jiyane Tree-O (Tree-O is the name of the musician's own band), returns with a second full-length, True Story, which investigates the state of his homeland with a series of songs "inspired by real people and their stories."

Review: If music's power to transport us somewhere else is what makes it such an addictive drug, albums like this swooning, sun-kissed and Latin-flavour jazz delight are class-A contraband. Henry Mancini is renowned for his iconic film and television scores (and you will certainly recognise its here for that reason) and so he won multiple Grammy Awards and a posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995. His music became a staple of the easy-listening genre from the 1960s to the 1980s, but also he made significant contributions to jazz, such as this most elegant and soothing work.

Review: Since being founded in 2013 in Rome, Sonor Music Editions has become a treasure trove of archival music that was originally made for films, radio and television. The mysterious Mandrassi & Zollinger, here backed by the I Beati studio band, cooked up one such killer but hitherto unknown library session, Rhythm & Sound, back in 1973. Andreassi is said to one of the first female library music composers and likely the release of this album is going to change how she is perceived. It's packed with endless breaks, superb funk grooves and plenty of chasing beats with a loose, live jam session feel that makes it all the more vibrant.

Review: Archeo love a good archive story, not least when it comes from the annals of Italian studio history. Here is one such story featuring Manrico Mologni and Nicola Calgari, who collaborated around 1990 on a series of rich, accomplished recordings with a highly musical, multi-instrumental backbone and the swoon of chanson in its heart. Due to Manrico's serious illness, these recordings were buried on a DAT and forgotten for 30 years, only to be recalled, recovered from DAT and given their chance in the sunshine. It's very much in line with Archeo's tastes - lush, dreamy pop with a Balearic tint, lovingly mastered and presented with the serious collectors in mind.

Review: Larry Manteca's Zombie Mandingo album arrived back in 2013 and in the danced plus has only ever been available digitally. Now it makes its debut on wax and remains a bold listen that was devised as a soundtrack to a non-existent exploitation film. It fuses funk, jazz, and Afrobeat influences with plenty of niche cinematic references such as the zombies in Lucio Fulci's horrors and Umberto Lenzi's cannibalistic adventures. The resulting mash up is beguiling to say the least with horror-tinged exotica next to Fela Kuti rhythms and elements of Italian Library music and colourful psychedelia. A boundary pushing work to say the least.

Review: Zoltan Nagy AKA P60 has spent the last four years slowly building up his Midnight Fashion label and its dedicated downtempo offshoot, Midnight Fashion Chill. Following a handful of solo EPs on the latter imprint, Nagy has now decided to offer up a first imprint compilation - one that not only showcases his work, but also that of Marcel (AKA sometime Cookin' Records artist Marcell Dudas) and Plastic City regular Forteba (AKA Hungarian stalwart Krisztian Dobrocsi). Library music was primarily created for television, radio and film but often yielded hidden gems that fused jazz, lounge and soul into storytelling vignettes of sounds. Marchetti's wonderful Solstitium is a prime example of innovation within this space which rightly remains a classic in the history of Italian music.

Recording with a quartet consisting of himself on perc, Masahiko Sato on piano, Yoshio Ikeda on bass and Mototeru Takagi on tenor sax and clarinet, Togashi created a masterpiece in Speed and Space. The title says it all, as time gets tested to every extreme and flurries of musicianship burst around unpredictable structures. Recorded in 1969 and still sounding light years ahead, this is a true gem in Japanese free jazz history.

It features bassist Osamu Kawakami leading the way with sax from Toshiyuki Honda and American drummer Donald Bailey who has worked on countless Blue Note sessions. It is a fusion record with real spirit and a proudly acoustic sound. The album is part of the BBE J Jazz Masterclass Series which is all about reissuing the very best in Japanese jazz.

Produced by saxophonist Jiro Inagaki and arranged by the renowned Norio Maeda, the album blends different musical formations including combo, big band and orchestra. This is the first analogue reissue and it comes on clear deep blue vinyl and is a great way to dive into Matsubara's captivating singing style as well as some real jazz heritage.

Review: To those who know, Maulawi was a legendary band leader and influential musician. The virtually unknown and previously unreleased album Ortunds is a long player he composed himself and one that draws on pop and r&b style songs that are all taken up a level by the funky tempos and Maulawi's own creative soprano saxophone. The album was recorded for Strata Records but the story is different depending on who tells it - either these are parts from a session for another album or from an unmixed session that took place in the Streeterville neighbourhood later. Either way, it's sure to become a cult classic.

Review: Second time around for Daniel Maunick's first album under his given name (he previously released one as DJ Venom way back in 2007), which first surfaced on Far Out back in 2019. An undeniably vibrant and at times heavy affair, the set sees the producer, multi-instrumentalist and 'son of Incognito's Bluey' joining the dots between Brazilian musical culture (most notably the rhythms of batucada and samba, and the far-sighted jazz-funk-fusion sounds of Azymuth) with a range of contemporary sounds (most clearly the deep house dustiness of Theo Parrish, the charred heaviness of UK bass, the stoned headiness of Dilla instrumentals, the shape-shifting energy of broken beat and the deep space shimmer of ambient techno). As hybrid, hard-to-pigeonhole records go, it's a genuine gem.

They are 'Never Leave Me' and a cover of Cole Porter's 'I Concentrate On You' and sit well with other gems like 'Come Rain Or Come Shine' and the standout title cut.

'Brotherhood of Breath' was an exuberant big-band created by South African-born pianist and composer Chris McGregor. In South Africa, McGregor had formed the racially mixed Blue Notes in the early 1960s. By 1964, finding it very difficult to work at home, they left for Europe, finally settling in London in 1966. The Blue Notes - Chris McGregor, Dudu Pukwana, Mongezi Feza, Johnny Dyani and Louis Moholo - made a huge impact on London's jazz scene and befriended many in London's emerging avant-garde jazz community.
