AC Soul Symphony - "The Philly Avengers" (7" version) (4:56)
Mistura - "If You Ever Need Somebody" (feat Tiffany T'Zelle - 7" version) (4:47)
Review: Z Records are kicking off 2023 in fine style with some seriously potent disco house wares, as if we would expect any less. On the A-side of this 7" we get AC Soul Symphony (Z main man Dave Lee to anyone else) having fun laying down the heat on 'The Philly Avengers' with a dramatic, wah wah toting funk explosion. On the B-side, Tiffany T'Zelle leads on vocals while Mistura handles the production for the swooning, passionate poise of 'If You Ever Need Somebody' - a future classic condensed into a radio-friendly edition for this killer 7".

Funkin' For Jamaica

Akiko & Masayasu Tzboquchi - "Love Theme From Sparticus" (feat Mbanja Ritchy aka B-Bandj - Clear Day mix) (4:34)
Review: Tom Browne's 1980 single 'Funkin' For Jamaica' has long been something of an anthem - a hybrid funk/boogie classic that remains a staple in sets of hip-hop, disco and soul DJs alike. Given its ubiquity, covering the song is fraught with danger, but remarkably Japanese producer Akiko and guest vocalist Mbanja Richy have successfully put a new spin on it. Their take is subtly tougher and more synth-heavy, with bilingual French/English vocals, nods to Zouk music and a bassline so squelchy it could have been lifted from a P-funk record. Over on the flip, the pair go mellow, deep and laidback on a pleasingly skewed hip-hop soul cover of Terry Callier's legendary vocal interpretation of Alex North's 'Love Theme' from 'Spartacus'. Inspired stuff all told.

Sun Goddess

Sun Goddess (feat Myka 9) (4:40)
Sun Goddess (instrumental) (4:40)
Review: The opening notes of Sun Goddess set the tone for what feels like the perfect soundtrack to a summer afternoon. Track one, 'Sun Goddess (Instrumental)', introduces a playful yet sophisticated guitar riff, effortlessly blending elements of funk and soul. It's the kind of groove that immediately hooks you, a little funky, a little laid-back, making it impossible not to nod along. Things get even more vibrant with track two, 'Sun Goddess (feat Mykah 9)'. Here, the energy is dialled up, offering a soulful twist as Mykah 9's vocals glide smoothly over the beat. The track oozes warmth, combining funky rhythms with a band-like cohesiveness that makes you feel like you're right in the middle of a live performance. It's an immersive experience, with the vocals adding richness and depth to an already bright sound. Both tracks embrace that quintessential summer vibe, blending funk, soul and a touch of band music to create something undeniably upbeat and positive. Mykah 9's contributions, particularly on 'Sun Goddess', add an extra layer of groove, making it a standout. There's an ease to these tracks, an effortless cool that makes them feel timeless, and together, they deliver a feelgood, sun-soaked energy that's hard to resist.

Review: If you go to the sort of quality dances where you might hear old sound disco then there is a good chance you will have lost your shit to this one at some point the past. It is a disco gospel 12" curated and edited by Chicago pair Sadar Bahar and Marc Davis. Cold Diamond & Mink - "Let's Get Together" (instrumental) (4:22)
Review: We just love hearing new soul and funk. Sure, a rare single from the 60s or 70s goes a long way in satisfying our needs, but how good is it to hear NEW music!? That's why we rate Finland's Timmion imprint so highly; they always come through with the goods, and there isn't a single EP they've put out that hasn't interested us... or flown off our shelves! This time, Jonny Benavidez, Cold Diamond and Mink team up for the absolute sexiness that is "Let's Get Together", a seductive soul ballad that is bound to lit up the room instantly! The instrumental is rather fine, too.

Cold Diamond & Mink - "Tell Me That You Love Me" (instrumental) (3:44)
Review: Coming through on Timmion's offshoot Stylart Records, Jonny Benavidez Cold Diamond and Mink have exactly what it takes to soothe those winter blues with a little bit of their own bluesy spirit. To be exact, this is pure-class soul music from the deepest part of their hearts, but there is a strong element of melancholia at its core, and that's what gives "Tell Me That You Love Me" its sparkle and mystique. Mink's voice is like velvet on this beautiful recording, and even the instrumental sounds like the sort of gem that everyone from Floating Points to Theo Parrish could dig. New music, too!

Review: Timmion is one of our favourite labels out of anywhere, let alone Finland. 'here comes another golden soul cut from the frozen north with Jonny Benavidez back in collaboration with the ever delightful grooves of Cold Diamond & Mink. The A-side is a heart melting soul ballad in the form of 'My Echo, Shadow and Me' which manages to pay homage to the classics while bringing something new. On the flip is a more dreamy and mid tempo soul sound in the Mandells'esque 'Playing The Fool' which carries you away to a better place.

Can't Go Through (4:34)
Review: Dennis Bovell is a British reggae legend; one of the originators within the genre and the producer of big hits such as 'Silly Games' (Janet Kay) and 'After Tonight' with his band Matumbi. He collaborated with vocalist Marie Pierre back in the day on this one called 'Groovin', an absolutely uplifting and sun kissed lover's rock number that will hook you from the first note. On the flip we have more feel good vibes on the rap/r'n'b and disco infused groove of 'Can't Go Through' which is guaranteed to keep the party going until the break of dawn. Marie Pierre's career was most active from the late '70s to the early '80s.

Where Do We Go From Here
Review: Taken from their last album Victim Of Love, both "Confusion" and "Where Do We Go From Here?" represent Charles and the Menahan Street Band's bright, tight funk credentials with powerful glee. The former is an unashamed funk stomper (think Sam Moore) with big psychedelic splashes on the chorus while the latter is a much slower, moodier jam where a bold guitar riff glides us into much more emotional pastures. Outstanding contemporary funk soul.

Review: Mad About brings the funky goodness here with a superb double sided 7". Sonny Bravo kick off with 'Tighten Up' which brings nice loose break beats and ton pot percussive clatter. The big horns are the icing on this particularly delicious cake. On the flip is the more Northern Soul style sound of Mongo Santamaria's 'We Got Latin Soul' with its fiery South American spirit, blasts of horn and edgy stabs all topped off with a great vocal that oozes cool. Calibro 35 - "Chaser" (3:02)
Review: Calibro 35's latest release showcases the band's ability to explore new sonic territories while paying tribute to the legends of jazz-funk. This limited edition 7" vinyl includes two standout tracks, 'Lunedi Cinema feat. Marco Castello' and 'Chaser.' 'Lunedi Cinema' revisits Lucio Dalla's iconic theme from RAI TV's Monday Movie, infusing it with a fresh jazzy disco-funk feel. Marco Castello's scat singing adds a playful yet sophisticated layer to this energetic reimagining, keeping the spirit of the original intact while adding a modern flair. On the flip side, 'Chaser' is a groovy jazz-funk stormer originally composed by Piero Umiliani for the 1975 noir film The Body. Calibro 35's rendition brings the song's cinematic intensity to life, weaving in funky rhythms that make it an electrifying listen. Calibro 35 once again prove their versatility and creativity in this thrilling release.

Review: Spiritual house diviner Joaquin "Joe" Claussell reissues his latest song of praise for the frankly named Gospel Music According To Joe Claussell imprint, documenting two obscure but rhapsodic ecstasies in kick-pumping form, this time on transparent 12" blue vinyl. First up is Myrna Summers' 'So Much To Live For', an affirmation to which Claussell testifies his allegiance through swirling piano backings and hand-clapping encomia. Queen Of Soul (part 1) (3:56)
Queen Of Soul (part 2) (3:55)
Review: Finland's Timmion Records should, by now, be categorised as leaders in the leftfield soul game. Their catalogue contains a wealth of both old and new talents and, whenever we see that famous 'TRI' sign hit our shelves, we just know we're in for the good shit. Thankfully, this new collaboration by the mysterious Cold Diamond and Mink is right up there with the rest of the label's wacky, soulful mind-melters, except that here we head into even deeper quarters. The 7" contains two parts of "Queen Of Soul", a rough, wavy piece of lo-fi strumming that uses its wonderfully exchoing guitars to guide the listener into a state of total psychedelia. We love it, and we suggest you to cop one now before it pops up for the triple the price in a decade's time. Bliss.

'You're The One (You're My Number One)' covers the eponymous 1983 disco cut by Katie Kissoon, but this rendition contains fresh vocals by featuring singer Sally Green. Review: This is a long awaited reissue for fans of modern funk and soul. It originally came back in 2018 and sold out in quick fashion. Now it is back via Cannonball Records with originals costing somewhere around L100. Big Lee Dowell And The Cannonballs Feat. Maxim Moston are behind 'What I Done Wrong' which has a lo-fi aesthetic and authentic old school feel - the dusty drums and soaring strings could be from the early 70s, and even the vocals have an authentic and original soul feeling. Review: Duktus and Maya Killtron is a perfect coming together of vocalist and beat maker and this new 7" is simply irresistible. 'So Natural' opens with glossy soul vocals and boogie bass but also has some epic balearic guitar riffs to bring that beauty sundown vibe. It's a heartfelt tune but one that goes big for dancers too. Review: Having recently made their debut via a fine lovers' rock cover of Eddie Kendricks classic 'Date With The Rain', East Coast Love Affair (AKA "the Athens of the North house band", according to member and label founder Euan Fryer) return with something rather different. 'Without You' is a deliciously dreamy, effortlessly soulful vocal deep house number that's as immersive, warm and comforting as a loved-up hug from that special person in your life. It sounds like it could have been made in NYC or NJ in the very late 1980s, but that's no bad thing. Over on the flip Fryer and his collaborators provide an authentic, boogie era-style extended remix of Mary Love Comer's 'Come Out of The Sandbox', giving it a reverential but far more DJ-friendly twist.

Review: Though they're well known for just four songs put out all the way back in 1971, Judy Freeman and Blackrock cut many more songs, which we're sad to say have been languishing in the vaults up until now. The newly-unearthed 'I Know Where You're Coming From' is a funky 70s Northern Soul masterpiece; The Preserveation Project have here rescued a lost, never-heard-before track by the group for the A-Side, a blistering anthemic Northern Soul monster with which fans will immediately resonate and connect. On the B, meanwhile, comes the formerly unrelated, previously unreleased Marshall Hooks cut 'She Is All I Need' - a relatively straight-ahead Otis Redding-styled soul original that thumps as a neat-fitting complement.

Review: One of many hidden RCA gems to be preserved by the Preservation Project - which revives and attempts to "immortalize" the oldest and most obscure soul cuts not yet known to the hordes - 'I Know Where You're Coming From' is a standout collision of worlds between New York-born soul singer Judy Freeman and soul / disco / funk instrumentalists Blackrock. Buzzing and jubilant, the A-side hears the California-bound singer urge us to stop wasting time and leave our problems at the door, in an emphatic statement of sympathy. The B revives the no less affecting Blackrock cut as it was released in the early 70s.

On the A-side you'll find a previously unreleased disco-funk workout from Goodie that was discovered in the master tapes held in storage by Total Experience Records. The Way You Love Me (Tom Moulton Philly Re-Grooved remix) (12:54)
Review: Some may argue that Dimitri From Paris and Tom Moulton have already provided the definitive remixes of Ron Hall, the Muthafunkaz and Marc Evans' 2006 gem "The Way You Love Me". This Glitterbox 12", which features alternative versions of those two legendary reworks, proves that they're wrong. Dimitri's "Glitterbox Retouch" of his Philadelphia International-inspired TSOP Version is a little more focused and tightly edited than its predecessor, but naturally incredibly similar. It's Moulton's "Philly Regrooved Mix", though, that's the real stunner. A near perfect example of Moulton's classic mixing skills, it sees the original disco mixer give space to each instrumental solo before unleashing the now oh-so-familiar vocal. The result is 13 minutes of unashamed disco bliss.

It's from that set that his latest single is taken. Martha Reeves & The Vandellas - "This Is The Love (I´ve Been Waiting For)" (2:37)
The Temptations - "Since I Don´t Have You" (2:27)
Blinky & Edwin Starr - "Never Gonna Give You Up" (3:00)
Review: A brand new funk and soul compilation throwing back to four cross-sixties exquisites, Soul 4 Real have really outdone themselves this time about. We lead with the pithy prancing-about that it Gladys Knight & The Pips' lost-love magic carpet ride in song, 'Show Me The Way', which flaunts the singer's tumescent voice in a flurry of longing to acquire her crush's ticker. Then Martha Reeves' apparently, formerly unreleased 'This Is The Love' showcases the Alabaman's vaso-dilated voice against an equally degage but still hooking soul jovial. The B travels further back in time to The Temptations' 'Since I Don't Have You', an unreleased stock with an especial Christmas charm from the Motown towerers; and finally, Blinky and Edwin Starr consummate a duetting soul love, through harmonics and end-phrase ghost notes, on the closing 'Never Gonna Give You Up'.

Review: The Lovers' Special Request EP presents a compelling selection of classic soul and reggae-infused tracks, making their debut on 12" vinyl. This collection features notable contributions from Christine Lewin, Marvin James, and Tricia Dean, with production by John Kpiaye and DJ Smokey Joe. On Side-1, Christine Lewin's 'In The Mood' reimagines Tyrone Davis's smooth after-hours classic, transforming it into a memorable female-led reggae hit. This rendition captures the essence of the mid-80s lovers rock scene, turning it into a timeless playlist staple. Marvin James follows with his soulful cover of The Spinners' 'I'll Be Around,' now reissued on vinyl for the first time. This track is paired with a sought-after instrumental mix, offering a deeper dive into its rich textures. Tricia Dean's 'Don't Let It Go To Your Head,' a cover of Jean Carn's soulful favorite, features the signature synth-led rhythms from Kpiaye and Smokey Joe. This track showcases the smooth blend of reggae and soul, rooted in the vibrant London music scene of the era. Side-2 features instrumental versions of each track, allowing listeners to appreciate the intricate production work behind these classic songs. The 'In The Mood Instrumental,' 'I'll Be Around Instrumental,' and 'Don't Let It Go To Your Head Instrumental' offer a fresh perspective on the grooves that have long been celebrated. Curated by Smokey Joe, a London DJ legend known for his extensive soca catalog and influential soul sets, this EP highlights his early work with soul and reggae, providing a nostalgic glimpse into a golden era of music.

Nova Onda (5:02)
Review: Long-time friends and semi-regular collaborators Lord Funk and Moar established the Nova Onda imprint two years ago in order to deliver occasional seven-inch singles featuring razor-sharp, on-point re-edits of Brazilian gems. The series has now reached volume three, with the Paris-based pair delivering two more essential, light-touch re-rubs. Our pick of the pair is flipside 'Nova Onda', a DJ-friendly tweak of a Clavinet and quelchy synth-sporting chunk of P-funk influenced Brazilian boogie rich in excitable raps, high-register male backing vocals and grooves so addictive they should come with a health warning. A-side 'Bela Menina', meanwhile, is a similarly tidy revision of what sounds like a boogie-era MPB number - think improvised male vocals, jazz guitar licks, huggable grooves and dreamy synth sounds.

Review: Paul Mac Innes is a real modern soul boy with a Motown twist. His latest single 'Falling By The Wayside' was written at some point before the pandemic hit and has been produced by Mattias Axelsson who also loves Motown. The original was shelved during lockdowns but then the pair decided to pull it out again during a post-Covid live show. It went down a storm and so it was time to finish it properly. They head to a studio in Gothenburg with some talented musicians and perfected the lovely tune that is now presented here on a tidy 7".

Review: Modern day soul from the heart of Manchester and the heat of Barcelona... Elliot Macauley follows up his debut EP "Retro" with this beautiful sun-kissed doublet. "All My Life" sits somewhere between Amp Fiddler and Darondo produced by Louie Vega. Big, hooky, warm and heartfelt; this will work just as well on floors as it will at home. "Mamas Baby Boy", meanwhile, shows Elliot's acoustic guitar skills off as Cleveland Jones adds a crystalline falsetto that pays homage to the most important ladies of the world. Beautiful.

Machito & His Orchestra - "Hold On (I'm Coming)" (feat Graciela)
Giobel & The Latin Chords - "We Belong Together"
Review:  A cheeky teaser from Record Kicks' forthcoming Boogaloo Vol 6 album, here we find two authentic Latin northern soul covers originally recorded in the late 60s. "Hold On" takes the horn heavy Sam & Dave classic and gives it a rapid tongue Spanish twist while retaining the distinctive English chorus. "We Belong Together", meanwhile, is a more touching take on a Bobby Marin standard. With Giobel really belting out the crooning vocals and a lounge style polish to the horns, it's instant funk seduction. Only 500 of these 45s... So jump on this as soon as you can.

Review: This new 7" from Jimmy Mack is a delightful piece of sunny soul. The Wisconsin man's a€iPop Goes The Weasela€™ was originally released in 1983 and has become an incredibly hard to find tune, and expensive when you do. The original sets off on an airy groove, with gentle flute leads, trilling chords and the effortless vocal melting your heart. On the flip side is an edit from a friend of the label, Bristol's Admin, who is one of the hottest edit talents in the game right now. His version is cleaned up a little but is sympathetic to the original with plenty of feel good grooves.

This 7" gem merges many styles and influences into one. On Side-1, 'Say You Love Me Girl' showcases a smooth and soulful blend of styles, highlighted by powerful vocal performance. It's a track that effortlessly bridges different musical influences, creating an engaging and catchy pop hit. Underneath it all, you have funk, salsa and disco all blending into a classy gem. Avianca Dubs (dub 2) (4:03)
Review: Hyped in hushed tones, the latest dubbing by studio troubadour Mad Professor has been so successfully kept under wraps, that relevant preview clips and contextual info online for it remain intentionally, ambiguously short, and relatively impervious to sleuthing. Of course, this would reflect the anxious ambivalence of wholesalers to unleash it back into to the wild; it only goes with the territory of dubplate culture! But they may have good reason to um and ahh, since this is a rare, and perhaps the only, example of a Mad Professor rerub of a Marvin Gaye tune, and not just any: it's none other than 'What's Going On?', of course! The version first surfaced on KLTY Radio and has never heard a proper release since. Avianca Dubs does the honours of ducting two versions on wax, in what is sure to be a faster-than-light shelf-clearer...

Review: Maggtapp's previously unreleased 'Because You're You' is the stunning a-side on this new 7" from The Preservation Society. It has standout vocals that make it a real modern soul groover, with a steady back beat and funky bass buried deep under electric piano and organ. Flip it and reverse it and you will find a tear up from Joe McGlone & The Hot Pepper Band. Their take on the classic 'Love I Lost' is raw, high energy and brilliant with its big church riffs, Norther Soul grooves and classic call and response chorus.

Push The Rock (Nicky D remix) (4:04)
Review: Magic In Threes' latest 7" single 'Push The Rock' comes as a rather experimental funk cut, and perhaps one that could only be made today. With the ghostly vocals of fellow Tennessee vocalist Amber Woodhouse gliding across the mix, this one's a veritable funk roller, floating on the vibe rather than leaning to far into disparate sections. With the band heavily inspired by old film soundtracks, obscure hip-hop tapes and library music, we can certainly hear that an added sense of eclecticism and exploration has gone into this track, informed not merely by funk alone.

Push The Rock (Nicky D remix) (4:01)
Review: Magic In Threes continue to blaze a trail of heavy-jamming funk with on eye on the dancefloor. The Nashville band haven't blessed us with any fresh wax since 2020's Stay In Your Lane, but now they're back with Amber Woodhouse in tow for the heady cut 'Push The Rock', landing on their long-time local label G.E.D. Soul Records. The bassline is everything, holding the groove down so the keys can flex and the guitar can get choppy on top. Meanwhile Woodhouse's understated intonations on the mic flow in and out of the mix with a relaxed cool, given a dubby treatment to add to the late night, get down vibe the band are aiming for. That's a vibe which comes on even stronger with the killer 'Remix' version on the B-side, too.

Open Up Your Eyes
Review: Schema are really spoiling us this week, not only have they issued a seven inch taster for Nicola Conte's upcoming album but here they dig into their archives and lift out a gem from Alessandro Magnanini. "Secret Lover" originally featured on Someway Still I Do, the debut LP from the guitarist, composer and producer released on Schema back in 2009 and it's impossible not to visualise the song soundtracking some misadventures from James Bond. That's thanks largely to Magnanini's classicist arrangements that evoke John Williams at his best and the vocal contribution of Jenny B whose delivery could easily be mistaken for Dame Bassey. It's backed with "This Is What You Are", the song has launched the career of the Sicilian Mario Biondi.

In fact, to bring in an extra element of Northern Soul funk, the Steel City's Rachel Modest features on the vocals of both "Patterns In My Mind", a slow-burning charmer of a tune with dangling melodies and a lo-fi touch, and also on the gorgeous, swingier groove of the majestic "Golden Shades". Two stunning hits that are bound to stay up here in the soul chart for a while.

Review: Six Nine looks back to go forwards here as the label serves up a couple of super fresh new mixes of a pair of stunning modern boogie and funk tunes. Magoo was the man behind the originals and T Groove is the man on remix duties. Up first are the glossy synths and seductive drums of 'Not Too Late (To Make It Right)'. Review: Sam Shepherd's Melodies International imprint has barely put a foot wrong to date, serving up a string of must-have reissues. Predictably, the label's latest offering - a facsimile reissue of a thoroughly obscure but in-demand disco 7" from 1979 - is another belter. A-side "Back Into Your Heart" is particularly potent, offering a rich, cheery and pleasingly fuzzy dance through horn-heavy disco-funk pastures, with a loved-up lead vocal joined by cascading strings, intergalactic synth solos and energy-packed drums. Turn to the flip for "Dance, Dance, Dance", an urgent chunk of funk-fuelled disco-rock that's almost as essential as the majestic A-side.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Record has very light surface marks/smudges, but otherwise in perfect working order***

Five years on from the release of the first seven-inch, Mako and Mr Bristow's Soul Edits" series reaches volume six. On the A-side's "Stealin Alright" they get to work on a riotous slab of funk-rock heaviness from the golden age of the sound - albeit one whose sweaty drum breaks, weighty bass and gravelly guitars also come accompanied by steel pan melodies. It's an odd combination but one that works really well. Over on side B, "Stealin' Nolan" is a tidy edit of another rhythm and blues style dancefloor workout, this time rich in stomping drums, memorable guitar riffs and stomping, Northern Soul style drums.
