Review: Given that Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker's Cuba: Music and Revolution - Culture Clash in Havana is one of the standout compilations of 2021, hopes are naturally sky-high for this speedy sequel. Like its predecessor, volume 2 focuses on music and made and released on the Caribbean island between 1975 and '85, this time round largely focusing on rare fusions of salsa, Latin jazz, disco, soul and funk, mostly licensed from records that have never been available outside Cuba. It's another stunning selection all told, with highlights including the heady Cuban disco/salsa fusion of Orquesta Los Van Van, the fiery disco-funk of FA 5, the heavily percussive hedonism of Luis Carobonell and the fuzzy psychedelic rock of Grupo De Experimentacion Sonora Del ICAIC. In a word: essential.

Pressed on "Frozen Lake Michigan" coloured vinyl, this Record Store Day exclusive is part of International Anthem's "IA11" series-celebrating 11 years by honouring their past while shaping the future of boundary-pushing global sounds.

Review: Here's a classic from The Oscar Peterson Trio - a coll-headed slice of traditional jazz from 1963 which is enjoying its 60th anniversary as the clock ticks over to 2023. It's an understated masterpiece, made up short performances written with commercial radio broadcast in mind, but even within tight time frames Peterson creates subtle, elegant movement which has rendered this record an enduring influence on successive generations of jazz musicians. Repressed on heavyweight wax and presented in a gatefold sleeve, it's sure to inspire a new wave of jazz artists as it gets a fresh airing.

Review: Kampala's Nyege Nyege is no longer a niche name in electronic music, having risen to become Africa's most prominent stable for experimental synthesised tracks, carving out not necessarily a sound - artists and albums vary pretty wildly - but a kind of aesthetic which, once recognised, can usually be identified in most output. Of course, there's a problem there, with so much light now being shone on Uganda and the label itself, meaning so much else is missed from nearby countries, let alone this vast continent. Nevertheless, all that attention is not without good reason, and this collaboration between Durban, South Africa-based gqom futurists Phelimuncasi and abstract sound system crew Metal Preyers is a case in point. At once rooted in authentic African dance genres, and yet staunchly determined to reconfigure them, it's pretty much unlike anything you'll hear this week/month/year.

Review: Expanding To One is the third album from Phi-Psonics and is a serene meditation on community, connection and healing. Led by bassist Seth Ford-Young, the project captures the spirit of six live and intimate sessions recorded in Pasadena's Healing Force Of The Universe record store and the tracks, which were largely improvised, glide through soulful, spiritual jazz with warmth and clarity. Highlights like 'There's Still Hope' and 'Healing Time' showcase a rotating ensemble of LA's most sensitive players and they all create music that is both grounding and transcendent. Thoughtfully edited and deeply personal, this is the sort of record that cajoles you into a space of stillness, togetherness and quiet, essential reflection.

Review: Seth Ford-Young's Phi-Psonics return with Expanding To One, a loose-limbed, quietly luminous third LP shaped from live sessions at Healing Force Of The Universe in Pasadena. Since founding the project in 2016, the East LA bassist has used Phi-Psonics as a vessel for collective improvisation and spiritual grounding, but this time there's a sharper edge; fourteen tracks, mostly conceived on the spot with a changeling group of collaborators, hear Ford-Young steer said ensemble through hushed dark jazz abstraction. With an ear for emancipatory politics - "the music we make doesn't exist in a vacuum and the backdrop of injustice and tragedy in our world has to be part of our music" - Phi-Psonics plays on a latent psionic ability in us all: to turn creative juices into truth.

Review: Guided by bassist Seth Ford-Young, Expanding To One is the third album from Phi-Psonics, and it offers a gentle yet profound exploration of healing, unity and introspection. The record in fact emerges from six intimate, largely improvised sessions at Pasadena's Healing Force Of The Universe record store. The result is a flowing suite of spiritual jazz rich in tone and intention. Tracks like 'There's Still Hope' and 'Healing Time' highlight a fluid lineup of gifted LA musicians whose interplay feels both grounded and transcendent. Carefully shaped in post-production, the album invites listeners into a calm, reflective space where connection and presence take quiet precedence.

Review: Gondwana label head Mathew Halsall has his own superb new album arriving any time now, but before that comes Octava, a second and equally sublime offering from LA's deep-jazz masters Phi-Psonics. Halsall calls their sound "beautiful, humble and honest" and so it proves here with these deeply meditative sounds led by bassist Seth Ford-Young and featuring Sylvain Carton on woodwinds, Mitchell Yoshida on electric piano, and Josh Collazo on drums. Inspirations are as diverse as yoga, philosophy, jazz and classical but all finished with their own uniquely spiritual take and a lasting feeling of hope and optimism.

Travolti Da Un Insolito Destino Nell'azzurro Mare D'agosto (Swept Away) (Soundtrack)
Review: Celebrates the 50th anniversary of Travolti da un insolito destino nell'azzurro mare d'agosto (which is better known in Engish as Swept Away) with the ultimate edition of this classic soundtrack from Decca. Piero Piccioni's iconic score perfectly captures the 1974 film's exotic ambience with samba, bossa nova and lounge music sounds all enriched by Nora Orlandi's wordless vocals. Fully remastered from the original archive master tape, this version comes on double vinyl and tastefully honours Piccioni's remarkable contribution to Italian cinema.

Cadaveri Eccellenti (CD)
Review: Pianist. Conductor. Composer. Impressario. Extraordinaire. We could probably leave it at that with Piero Piccioni, but for the sake of clarity let's get clear. One of Italy's most prolific film composers of the mid-late-20th Century, this monolith of big band and jazz wrote more than 300 movie scores in his career, and also lays claim to membership of 013, the first jazz outfit broadcast in his home country following the fall of Fascism in 1944. Born in Turin, one of the epicentres of Italian music, Cadaveri Eccellenti was a 1977 crime thriller about Lino Ventura, Italy's top homicide detective, who is investigating the assassination of a judge. Full of intrigue, mystery, and tension, not to mention that underlying sense of sexiness which seems to pervade European flicks of this era, by now you can probably imagine how cool the score is.

Review: Piero Piccioni's score for Ti Ho Sposato Per Allegria (1967) offers a delightful and sophisticated accompaniment to Luciano Salce's comedy, based on Natalia Ginzburg's play. The film's narrative follows a serious lawyer who marries a whimsical and scatterbrained girl with a troubled past, just a month after meeting her. The story's charm lies in its light-hearted approach to serious themes like abortion, death, separation, and marital communication issues. Piccioni's music, released on vinyl by Musica Per Immagini, perfectly complements the film's whimsical tone. His score blends moods and aesthetic elements from his earlier works while introducing the unmistakable sound of bossa nova, funk, and lounge that would come to define much of his 70s output. The Turin-born composer's ability to simplify complex harmonic structures, infused with jazz elements, results in melodies that are both memorable and classy. Key to this soundtrack are its buoyant spirit and refined elegance. Piccioni's compositions achieve a perfect balance between catchy themes and intricate musical textures. Piccioni's talent for creating music is both light-hearted and artistically rich, making this a standout in his extensive catalog.

Review: Revisionist history is just as important for music as it is for geopolitics or economics, so we're more than happy to recognise this 'Alternative Vision Of Argentinian Music' throughout one of the most important decades in popular music history. Whereas popular thought tended towards Argentina being a hotbed for 'rock nacional' (national rock) music made in the post-dictatorship return to democracy, here Soundway focus on the more extreme ends of the experimental music fringes that cropped, thanks to the newfound freedoms allowed by neoliberal policies. Arthur Russell-esque disco, downtempo battle breaks, avant-garde obscurities - it's all there.

This evocative work blends influences from modern classical music, Japanese environmental ambient, fourth-world electronics, free jazz, and Estonian choral traditions that are inspired by Tallinn-based composer Tonu Korvits. Collaborating with the VOX Sydney Philharmonia Choir and conducted by Pike's childhood friend, the composer Sam Lipman, this wonderful record was recorded in a 19th-century Gothic church which has helped to create a haunting and atmospheric soundscape that pays homage to diverse musical traditions while pushing the boundaries of contemporary composition.

The group released three singles between 1984 and 1985 including cult favourites like 'Melodies of Love' and 'India.' Rocca's music has been widely sampled by artists such as Jamie xx, Burial and Todd Terry which has cemented his status as a BritFunk pioneer. His tracks have also featured in TV, film, and high fashion and this album includes six classic Pink Rhythm tracks, four of which haven't been on vinyl since 1985 and beautifully blend vintage 80s drum machines, synths, and saxophones.

During his two years in Argentina, he joined the Viejas Raices project with local jazz legends Jorge Lopez Ruiz and Pocho Lapouble, collaborated with Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava and also released his solo album, Pelo de Rata (which means "Rat's Hair"). Pizarro had a rich musical background in Chile and studied at Berklee but also folds in US jazz fusion with Latin American influences while expertly exploring harmony and intimacy. An eight-page booklet includes extra context on this mini Latin jazz classic.

Review: A formerly impossible to find second album by Nicaraguan band Poder De Alma, first released in 1975. A cool mix of Latin funk, jazz, salsa and psychedelic grooves, this one includes some of the group's most sought-after tracks like 'Bacanal' 76,' 'Mimo' or the antiracist statement 'La Conga de las Dos Razas.' After recording their first LP in Guatemala, the Nica supergroup travelled to Costa Rica to register their second album; this time, the recording studio and equipment available to them (including a Mini-Moog) were an improvement compared to their prior project and the band saw a new line-up. The result was a powerful album which is now one of the holy grails of Latin funk worldwide.

Review: Port Almond, the alter ego of Norwegian singer-songwriter Rune Simonsen, faced various challenges creating his second album Little Ships. After the success of their 2018 debut, the recording session for this one was delayed due to the pandemic and a devastating fire that destroyed LowSwing Studio. Despite setbacks, Simonsen and producer Guy Sternberg persevered, recording the album in September 2021 at Emil Berlin Studios and mixing at Hansa Studios. Featuring British trumpeter Tom Arthurs, Norwegian bassist Dan Peter Sundland, and Tom Krimi, Little Ships presents ten surrealist songs. The album, cut directly to vinyl without digital processing, includes exclusive art prints by Israeli artist Nir Evron in a luxurious gatefold cover.

Review: Ella Fitzgerald has a spotless discography that is packed with many a classic tunes but for plenty of fans and critics alike, Let No Man Write My Epitaph is one of her ultimate standouts. She recorded the album back in 1960 with backing from the pianist Paul Smith. The album takes its name from the movie in which Fitzgerald starred and hits some truly rare depth of emotional understanding. It helped secure Ella's status as one of the finest translators of the Great American Songbook and now Verve's Acoustic Sounds Series transfers the originals from analog tapes and has remastered them on to 180-gram vinyl complete with deluxe gatefold packaging.

Review: Few contemporary jazz songwriters have emerged with such demonstrative authenticity and clarity as Gregory Porter. Liquid Spirit continues where the prolific artist left us with Be Good and Water; soulful, funky and galvanised in honest emotion. Echoing foundation-setting singers such as Isaac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield and even further back to the likes of Sammy Davis Junior, Porter flings us from vibe to vibe with precision-written lyrics and emphatic delivery. Highlights include the double-bass slapping stomper "Liquid Spirit", the boogie-fuelled "The In Crowd", the Cullum-esque "When Love Was King" and the tear-jerking finale "Water Under Bridges." Beautiful business.

Though both are highly esteemed artists in their respective micro-corners of the electronic music scene, Posford and Rothfield both depart significantly from their usually danceable ends for a living-room recorded set of ambiences. With a synth placed atop an antique Bluthner piano, Raj and Simon would join in after the other first begun playing, delivering a 44-minute effluence for the spontaneous soul.

Review: POSY's full-length debut The Garden is such a lush and organised soundscape that it really lives up to its tranquil title. Emerging from the Pacific Northwest, POSY is a multi-instrumentalist who crafted the album using analogue gear and traditional studio setups to create a warm, rich sound. The album's title is inspired by a real garden - a place of solace where the artist overcame writer's block by recording voice notes that they later refined in the studio. Influenced by artists like Yuseff Dayes and KIEFER, The Garden blends jazz, funk and downtempo with gems like 'All The Time' and collaborations with vocalists SAiGO and Jennyfire helping it to really stand out.

Review: Since he first emerged on Diagonal a decade ago, Powell has been associated with abstract rhythms, hard-edged electronics, modular madness and fearsome experimentation. Piano Music 1-7, then, is something of a departure: a set that's as equally as inspired by piano jazz and neo-classical musical movements as fractured electronica and the Radiophonic Workshop. Of course, this is not piano music in the Nils Frahm sense - much of the actual piano motifs are delivered on lo-fi keyboards and synthesizers, while his fluid, attractive and ultra-melodic refrains come wrapped in studio effects and occasional electronic textures. A great example of this hybrid sound is 'Piano Music 4' - all alien electronics, woozy piano riffs and unsettling experimental intent, while the raw beauty of shimmering ambient number 'Piano Music 7' is simply sublime.

Review: Bebop piano genius Bud Powell made his most enduring recordings as a leader for Blue Note, and was a catalyst for moving the label from the hot jazz on which it was founded, into the modern music made by Powell, Thelonious Monk, Fats Navarro, and others. Powell's 1949 and 1951 quintet & trio sessions were first released in 1952, in the form of the 10" LP The Amazing Bud Powell, and later expanded as The Amazing Bud Powell, Vol. 1, when Blue Note moved to the 12" LP and launched the 1500 series in 1955. The quintet date featured the pianist with the likes of trumpeter Fats Navarro, tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins, bassist Tommy Potter, and drummer Roy Haynes performing Powell originals such as 'Dance of the Infidels,' 'Wail,' and 'Bouncing with Bud.' The trio date featured bassist Curly Russell and drummer Max Roach joining Powell on the jaunty classic 'Un Poco Loco,' presented here in three evolving takes, along with timeless versions of Powell's 'Parisian Thoroughfare' and Dizzy Gillespie's 'A Night In Tunisia,' as well as showstopping solo piano performance of 'It Could Happen To You.'

Review: Jonathan Powell's Mambo Jazz Party is an electrifying blend of Latin and modern electric jazz that draws from his 20 years of experience playing with legends like Eddie Palmieri and Tito Puente Jr.. It finds Powell assembling an 18-piece ensemble to bring the infectious rhythms of mambo to life and mix traditional Latin jazz with influences from electric pioneers like Chick Corea and Weather Report. He adds in layers of tabla textures and crossover jazz harmonies across a series of both original compositions and reimagined classics. Mambo Jazz Party captures the essence of joyous, groove-driven music and creates an irresistible party atmosphere throughout.

Review: Roy Powell's piano trio is set to enchant listeners once again with their new album, The Italian Songbook, a sequel to their acclaimed 2009 release, Napoli, which has graced Terashima Records compilations multiple times. This latest collection features seven beloved Italian compositions alongside two original pieces, showcasing Powell's masterful lyrical expression. The album transports listeners through Italy's picturesque landscapes with its rich melodies and heartfelt performances. Powell has emotional depth, particularly evident in the slower pieces where his artistry shines. Known for his background in avant-garde composition and jazz, Powell's journey began with his debut album, A Big Sky, recognised as a significant contribution to British contemporary jazz. In The Italian Songbook, Powell and his trio create a vibrant soundscape that captures the essence of Italian city life, inviting audiences to experience the beauty and charm of Italy through music. This release is poised to be a delightful addition to any jazz lover's collection.

From The Fire is a superb new album from Audrey Powne that is about as accomplished as any debut could be. The young auteur herself has composed all nine cuts, wrote all the lyrics, plays all the piano, organ and Rhodes, does all the singing, arranged all the strings and produced everything herself as she set out to have complete creative control. It is a rich and rewarding listen with some soaring solos and meticulously crafted grooves that have already won her high praise from those in the know such as Gilles Peterson.

Review: Munich-based trio Prepared craft a hypnotic and high-energy journey that blurs the lines between chamber music, jazz and minimal dance. The trio i Chris Gall on prepared piano, Flo Riedl on bass clarinet and Christoph Holzhauser on drums i merges cyclical motifs and layered patterns into a trance-inducing soundscape. Drawing comparisons to Steve Reich, Jonny Greenwood and Dawn of Midi, their music pulses with rhythm and repetition, creating a hypnotic Gesamtkunstwerk that feels both innovative and timeless. Recorded live in a single room without overdubs, Module is a state-of-the-art production. Utilizing advanced 3D miking techniques for Dolby Atmos, the recording captures the raw interplay between instruments with breathtaking clarity. Across four expansive tracks divided into ten parts, the album flows through moods and textures. 'Modul Eins' opens with a downtempo introduction before evolving into an upbeat, swinging groove. 'Modul Zwei' offers a cinematic, film noir feel, while 'Modul Drei' dips into hip-hop beats with introspective breaks. The 15-minute opus 'Modul Vier' swells through four sections like changing seasons, showcasing the trio's virtuosity and cohesion. With Module, Prepared prove that repetition can be a riveting genre-defying experience that's impossible to forget.

Review: Kolony Gorky is back with a third EP in less than a year that once again offers some stylish and artful rhythmic interpretations. DDrhode is behind this one in collaboration with Sohrab and it opens with the airy percussive pattern and suspensory loops of deep and deft jam 'Ghoroob' (Kryptic Rhythm) which becomes dusty downbeat and late-night jaunt when served up as the Buggin Beat. 'Azadi' has the feel of a 60s spy thriller with its mysterious leads and 'Distant Sun'shuts down with some zoned out and loved-up deep house romance. Another hard-to-define but easy-to-love EP from the already vital Kolony Gorky.

Review: Originally released in 1973, Prof James Benson's seminal album, The Gow Dow Experience is a project that has an amazing story accompanying it. An entirely self-released project, Prof Benson's intention was to record these sessions so that his students at Cal Poly in California would have a special memento of what they had achieved together. Taking inspiration from their recent trip to Africa and blended with the radical jazz emerging from Black American artist's in the 70s, it was a momentous achievement for him and his young protegees. Jazzman's re-release also includes four tracks from the recording session that, until now, have never been released - they're well worth the wait, we promise!

Review: Professor Creepshow is back with another of his immersive and innovative new albums on SIC Records. The wonderful Dreamcast is a 17-track soundscape that blurry the lines between dreams and reality and invites you to embark on a journey that the artist has defined as 'Playawave'. It's silky smooth and lo-fi hip-hop with balmy pads and soulful hooks, some cosmic moods and plenty of nods to niche genres like vapourjazz, jazz wave, mallsoft, chill wave and plenty of other in-between sounds that blend moods and grooves from jazz, hip hop and downtempo into something superbly cathartic and escapist.

Review: Coming just after this seminal recording celebrated its 50th anniversary, Craft Recordings presents a carefully handled reissue of Tito Puente's Para Los Rumberos. Puente remains one of the all time greats of Afro-Cuban percussion, and he recorded this definitive set in New York in 1972, whipping through mambo, guaracha and cha-cha-cha with his trademark explosive drumming front and centre and backed up by some sharp-shooting players. Cut all-analogue from the original tapes and pressed in audiophile quality, this is a much-deserved revisit to one of the most iconic recordings in Puente's accomplished career.

Review: Having provided the beats for an estimated 3000 plus albums, many of them by legendary artists like Aretha Franklin and Steely Dan, Bernard Purdie's reputation as a drummer was significant enough for him to assemble his own ensemble at WDR Studios in Cologne, Germany in March 1996. The idea for this album was to take soul classics like Stevie Wonder's 'Superstition' and 'When A Made Loves A Woman', initially made famous by Percy Sledge, and kick them around the improvisation room. Although the arrangements are tight and economic, there's plenty of life to the playing, and of course, the drumming is just about as good as it gets.

Original pioneers of rare groove PUSH made a welcome return with this exciting album back in 2004 when it first dropped. It remains a vibrant workout 20 years later and blends classic underground rare grooves with contemporary feel-good funk and soul, featuring heartfelt songs and incredible instrumental pieces along the way. Emerging from the London club scene in 1987, PUSH thrived on JB-inspired funk, blaxploitation soundtracks, and raw soul-jazz. They toured Europe and Japan, performing at Gilles Peterson's legendary Dingwalls sessions. Key members Crispin Taylor, Ernie McKone, and Mark Vandergucht also played with Galliano and supported US divas like Candi Staton and Marlena Shaw.

Review: In 1971, this revered figure of Italian jazz, facilitated a remarkable session that brought together a talented ensemble of musicians, including trumpetist Francesco "Cicci" Santucci, saxophonist Enzo Scoppa and renowned keyboardist Franco d'Andrea. This collaboration, recorded at Umiliani's Sound Workshop studio in Rome, resulted in a brilliant jazz-funk album that blends intricate rhythms with melodic improvisation. Santucci and Scoppa, both seasoned in the late 50s Italian jazz scene, are joined by Belgian organist Joel Vendrokenbrak, adding a unique flavor to the mix. The album features d'Andrea on electric piano, a precursor to his future work with the progressive jazz group Perigeo. Originally released under a different name, this album is now reissued for the first time with its striking original cover art. The reissue includes a poster and a printed insert featuring images of the Sound Workshop studio, offering a deeper connection to the historical significance of the recording. With its masterful blend of jazz, funk and Italian creativity, this reissue is a significant addition to any collection of rare and influential jazz recordings.
