Bitches Brew Nu Soul
Cat: BITCH 017. Rel: 14 Jun 10
Bambu - "The Real Thing" (vocal mix)
Jinadu - "Natural Thing" (Domu's Mutant Soul remix)
Panic - "Jam" (feat MC Chick-A-Boo - Charlie Dark dubstrumental)
Review: A supremely cool sampler from nu-soul label Bitches Brew that features a wealth of different talents coming together to make some sweet and smooth treats. Opener Jam features MC Chickaboo (Soul 2 Soul, Goldie, Timo Maas) on the vocals and Attica Blues' Charlie Dark on the remix, turning it into a lowdown "dubstrumental" complete with rollicking drums and some seriously squelchy bass. Jinadu's Natural Thing gets remixed by broken beat hero Domu and it's a typically enthralling workout of crisp jazzy drums and  beautiful floating melodies placed delicately on top.
Label founder Cosmo weighs in with the gorgeous Mistaken, done under her Ch'i alias and with vocalist Billie Godfrey up front on the mic, turning in a deliciously melancholy yet powerful vocal, backed up with some Roy Ayres-style vibes action for good measure. The Broken mix of Jinadu's Turning The Tide is another revelation, mixing up Rhodes stabs and some precision beats along with a vocal that bores it's way into your memory bank after a couple of listens.
Two standout cover versions round off this excellent compilation - Bamba take on Linda Williams' jazz-funk classic Elevate Your Mind and also turn in a Latin-flavoured version of Stevie Wonder's The Real Thing. Both of them are faithful and clearly done with a lot of reverence to the originals - a testament to a label that has soul running through it's veins as this collection shows.

Find The Beauty
Find The Beauty (instrumental)
Review: Bread & Souls is an ensemble of musicians, singers, DJs, producers and, most of all, long term friends: a globally-spread family re-gathered by Franco Fusari - entrepreneur, music lover and dreamer. 'Find The Beauty' is the project's 7" preview track (preceding the full project), featuring Detroit-based Paul Randolph on vocals, Tommaso Cappellato on drums, Marcus Machado on guitar and Taku Hirano on percussion, all directed by eclectic project leader and producer Mark de Clive-Lowe, the pianist and true electronic-jazz pioneer. A remarkably well-rounded disco-jazzdance sprawler full of glitzing swing and synthetic ornaments, there's something in 'Find The Beauty' for all the family.

Review: "Star Libre Remixes" is an amazing package with the incredible original version from DJ Mochizuki and mixes from the legendary Idjut Boys. Review: Second chapter of the 'Inside' series of various artists eps selected by Neroli's very own Volcov. This time with a more eclectic approach than the previous volume, exploring more electronic landscapes with Domu's downtempo ambience song aptly titled 'Point Of Entry' and Jamal Moss's unmistakable sound on his opus 'Black Hands Sound 63' on the first side. Mark De Clive-Lowe, Patrick Gibin & Tommaso Cappellato - "Apollo 3000" (MdCL Dreamscape Refix) (5:17)
Review: Last year, Mother Tongue Records released Madre Lingua, an album of all-star collaborations between broken beat and deep house musicians and producers helmed by Verona-based Brit Patrick Gibin. This 12" updates two of the tracks from the set, with Gibin once again to the fore. On side A, he joins forces with long-time friend and studio buddy Kaidi Tatham to remix EDB and Gary Superfly's 'Pressure'. Their tack is bouncy and synth-heavy, with spacey, out-there lead lines and intergalactic-sounding pads rising above a Maurice Fulton-as-Syclops style bassline and loose-limbed house drums. On the flip, Marc De Clive-Lowe remixes his own collaboration with Gibin and Tommasso Capelleto, 'Apollo', brilliantly joining the dots between spacey jazz-funk and ambient on a superb, beat-free 'Dreamscape' mix.

Cinnaman & Jay Scarlet Present Beat Dimension Vol 1
Flyamsam - "Green Tea Power"
Hearin Aid - "Figz"
Pursuit Grooves - "Push Up"
Up Hygh - "Acid"
Aardvarck - "Nosee"
Review: Cinnaman (Rush Hour, Young Buck) and Jay Scarlett (Spacek Soundsystem) teamed up to compile an album dedicated to new developments in beats produced by the up-and coming as well as celebrated producers from all ages and backgrounds. These people are mostly brought together by the mighty internet, where they share and compete (with) their beats. These producers all have at least one thing in common; their love for beats. Cinnaman and Jay Scarlett have now brought together an unique selection of these beats, already coined Beatstrumentals. We packaged it as Beat Dimensions. The first two album samplers (total of three) are strictly limited to 500 copies and total 10 beats. Many new comers here, like VeeBeeO, Super Smorky Soul and Pursuit Grooves, but also known producers like Steve Spacek (as Black Pocket), Up Hygh, Aardvarck and Flying Lotus (as Flyandsam).

Review: 'Suite For Chick' is a heartfelt tribute to the late jazz legend Chick Corea. This 12" was assembled to reimagine classics like 'City Gate, Rumble,' 'Time Track,' 'Hymn of the Heart' and Return to Forever's 'Romantic Warrior.' It finds Bangkok-based Maarten Goetheer collaborating with Thailand's jazz virtuoso Pong Nakornchai and blending Wurlitzer chords, Moog basslines, ARP leads and Rhodes phasings. Inspired by his jazz-pianist father, Maarten fuses classic jazz with modern genres like techno, cosmic disco and ambient for a fresh take on jazz fusion. These electrifying interpretations honour Corea's pioneering legacy in jazz and fusion from his groundbreaking work with Miles Davis to founding Return to Forever.

Guess What is a a transcontinental and interplanetary keys and drums duo who have been going on weird and wonderful musical trips since 2008. Session Victim - "Gheister" (2:10)
Review: The second sampler for Rhythm Section International's fifth anniversary compilation has landed, and like its predecessor is packed to the rafters with must-check gear. Duke Hugh kicks things off with the short-but-sweet, Rhodes-powered soundscape "Zoe", before Research Club delivers some bubbly pitched-down acid ("Cafe Iguana") and Paula Tepe jams out some quirky proto-house goodness ("Panamericana"). Over on side B Jad Lee (as Jad & The) takes over with some deep, reggae-influenced breakbeat house, before handing the baton to Shy One with the deep, bruk-up dreaminess of "House Party". Session Victim provides a fittingly strong conclusion with the quirky deep house drowsiness of "Gheister".

Waves Of Love (original disco version)
Waves Of Love (Deeper mix)
Review: Italian producer Isoul8 and Detroit bassist Paul Randolph (of Innerzone Orchestra fame) hook up on this rather lush 12" on Japanese imprint Especial. "Stay Stay Stay" is a tribute to Roy Ayers and Don Blackman, with soulful vocals floating over the top of languid, funky bass licks and mellow, twinkling keys. The flipside contains two versions of "Waves Of Love" - with the solid 4/4 thump of the disco version slightly shading it for our money. It was also a favourite in the record box of the late Aaron Carl, and as such the Especial crew have dedicated this release to the much loved producer.

Now There Is We (Kuniyuki Percussion remix)
Now There Is We (Mano Arriba remix)
Now There Is We (Yosuke Tominaga remix)
Now There Is We (Metome remix)
Review: Jazzanova and the whole Sonar Kollektiv crew have always retained strong ties to Japan's Djing scene, so it's little surprise to see a 12" featuring some of the country's finest talents reworking the German group. Issued in collaboration with Especial Records, the label owned by Kyoto Jazz Massive's Yoshihiro Okino, this 12" sees Jazzanova and Paul Randolph collaboration "Now There Is We" remixed no less than four times and the results are sublime. Sapporo Future Jazz apostle Kuniyuki Takahashi bends the track into a compelling new shape dominated by some excellent piano work, whilst Mano Arriba mutates Jazzanova's production into a killer salsa workout. DJ and beat digger Yosuke Tominaga transforms mattes into a dirt laden funk out, whilst Takahiro Uchibori, aka Metome, drops perhaps the most drastic revision. Here forward thinking broken beats rule whilst Randolph's vocals are twisted into new forms reminiscent of early Jamie Liddell.

Review: Eglo Records' 10th birthday celebrations are in full swing. They've already notched up a riotous birthday party that got rave reviews, and later in the year will release a brand new compilation of previously unheard treats. It's this collection that's being trailed here via Kieran "K15" Ifill's "Devotion", a dancefloor-focused chunk of soul-flecked broken beat that Ego co-founder Alexander Nut recently described as "music for the mind, body and soul". Over on the flip there's a vinyl-only exclusive in the shape of Ifill's remix of Patrick Gibin and Javonntte's recent jazz-funk fired soulful house workout "Cloud 9". Ifill opts for a heavy bruk-up flavour, wrapping soulful musical elements from the original around punchy, loose-limbed beats and speaker-bothering low-end pressure.

PDN - "CTNFTT" (Lego Reedit) (5:17)
Review: The third volume in Colpo Grosso's edits series amounts to yet another slinky slice of sensual post-Italo disco sundries. With each original artist and track title on the record respectively lent a three-letter and N-letter abbreviation, we'll leave it to you to piece together the puzzle as regards to whose source material is being reworked here. On this occasion, the hired hands are Massimo Voci, M.B. Funk, Wandevogel and Legowelt, each of whose takes on the various steam-downs and sweat lodgings of the genius genre that is Italo amount to four farther, slammingly sexual condensations of the sound. Our fave has to be Vandevogel's version of 'PRNDLCS', which starts out dramatically downcast before launching into a well-placed implantation of baritone sax and *bonne brisse* vocals.

Nino Morschella - "You Never Come"
Review: "Kiss The Sky" is from the forthcoming Shawn Lee album, "Voices & Choices", due out in early 2006 and features Nino Moschella's vocals riding a vintage Lee moody down tempo track. As an exclusive bonus to this EP, Warp Records producer Mark Pritchard (aka Harmonic 33, Troubleman etc) turns in an absolutely anthemic soundtrack-inspired remix. "Song For David" is also from the upcoming "Voices & Choices and sees Shawn Lee in David top Axelrod-like form with a stunning instrumental track complete with big dramatic strings and fat drums. Shawn Lee remixes Nino Moschella's "Holding On" taken from the Moschella debut album "The Fix", and also included is the breezy acoustic soul vibe of "You Never Came", yet another exclusive to this EP that's completely unavailable anywhere else.

Review: The gloriously off-the-wall On The Corner imprint is back, ready to tear it down with its predictably unpredictable chain of artists who reside firmly in the 'ODDS' space. Much like the previous releases, this is a mixed bag of outernational goodness and jazzy sensibilities, offering a release which truly blurs the lines of the extended 'dance' space. Our top picks in running order: Black Classical's "JeJe" is one of the most innovstive uses of percussion and organ that we've heard this side of year, Sam Jones' "Group As Salaam Construct" is probably THE definition of off-kilter thanks to its lopsided beat groove, and "Simba" by Daisho takes the whole polyrhythmic equation onto the minimal end of the spectrum. Quirky, refreshing and absolutely recommended new strains of floor music.

Messages From The Stars (4:47)
Review: Here's a rare treat, as Canadian producer, self-proclaimed polymath and underground neo-soul chanteuse Maylee Todd inaugurates her band "Pegwee Power" (named, it seems, after a track on her 2010 set "Choose Your Own Adventure") in order to lay down two synth-heavy chunks of 1980s boogie-soul. Smooth A-side "Mutual Attraction" is particularly impressive, sounding like the kind of slick, synth-laden chunk of sensual '80s soul that would once have been a staple of late night AM radio. It's stylistically spot on, of course, though it's the song itself and Todd's sensitive vocal that stand out. Over on side B she successfully turns in a sympathetic and deliciously dreamy cover of the RAH Band's 1983 UK boogie gem "Messages From The Stars".

This 7" sees beat-maker Moonbrew and composer Paolo Apollo Negri reimagine Piero Umiliani's 'Nel Villaggio,' originally featured on his 1975 library album Continente Nero. Side A, titled 'As If It Matters,' introduces a new dreamlike track where Tilde's delicate vocals float over a hypnotic marimba sample, blending with synths and a modern beat. The 7" collects two more essential tracks that first surfaced in 2002 on Concrete Grooves and sticks the excellently jazzy hip-hop instruments on a limited edition 7". 'Trip To Brazil' is as sweet as sugar with heat damaged chords and excellent jazzy melodies over a lazy beat. 'Pianoscape' is a more traditional hip hop sound with some dusty piano keys and nice vocal stabs that keep it deep.

Plenafro - "Plenafro"
Review: Seiji makes a triumphant return as Oreja with his debut for Candela. Similar to his work with Papa (remember 'Vazilando'!) "Julietta" is pure afro Latin house fire. Plenafro was conceived by labelboss Pablo Rodriguez who brought together 6 Plena musicians for a session that re-edited the track in a broken style.

Shakara (Ossie Bump edit)
HER (Photomachine Raw edit)
Oops (Palace Raw version)
Review: After the well-received edit turns by Cyril Hahn on the first of The Love Below's 12"s, the label pulls together a powerful cast of modern beatsmiths to turn their attention to some old but unspecified jams with some unpredictable results. Ossie is on absolute fire with the "Bump Edit" of "Shakara", which seems to lift from an afro beat sound source and creates a perfectly pitched shaker of a house cut that could ignite the dullest of parties without ever having to showboat. Meanwhile Photomachine gets into a strung out R&B tip, reworking "HER" into a slow-burning jam steeped in Detroit beatdown soul perfect for long, dusty evenings. Palace is in a more crisp, modernist mood compared to the contemporaries, bringing a stout tech-house flavour to the "Oops" re-edit that should slip nicely into an up to the minute set.

This Way (4:53)
Breathe & Stop (Abstract Blend) (4:00)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: New York producer P-Sol has hit on a super effective formula for starting the party, stitching together a selection of familiar samples and hooks, adding some beautifully dusty breaks and adding a final sheen of shiny production skills. Both sides of this 7" have a touch of raw 'two turntables' action about them, while remaining impeccably constructed and tight, with the A-side 'This Way' proving to be the slightly speedier and slightly more funk/r&b-flavoured, while 'Breathe & Stop (Abstract Blend)' is the one for the pure hip-hop heads. Both, however, are dynamite in the box, needless to say.

1973 (7" mix) (4:58)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: New York has long had a rich deep house history and now adding to that is new label PS7 which opens up with a pair of delightfully dusty cuts from P-Sol. This tidy 7" kicks off with 'Get Ta Steppin' (7" mix) which is a low-key and delightfully downtempo cut with organic claps and noodling jazz keys all coated in warming vibes, playful melodies and muttered vocals. On the flip, '1973' (7" mix) is another low-slung gem with layers of lo-fi sound and sunny keys rising up through the mix. Both of these are heartwarming soul sounds for good times only.

Feels Like (OPOLOPO remix) (4:52)
Review: Pink Lizard come through with the RSD goods in the shape of this vinyl edition of Pablo's "Feel Like", a track that's gained increased clamour since hushman deejay Gilles Peterson dropped a demo version on radio back in 2013. This edition sees the track reworked by Pink Lizard boss Benbo, and is quite the uplifting cut, not least in the manner that Pablo's unmistakable vocal ascends through the detuned chords and immersive bass. The track is given a further dust down by OPOLOPO and it's an entirely different proposition, bit of a Bugz vibe to the crisp, broken rhythms and deep bass swerves. A fine record this one.

Review: Pahua is a Mexican singer, percussionist, DJ and producer who was once part of the Sotomayor band but went solo in 2020. Her sound is steeped in Latin influences and resulted in a debut album in 2023 and she recently landed on Razor-N-Tape with some tracks that now get remixed on this new 7". First up is 'Espantapajaros' (feat La Perla - Poirer remix) which is a mix of deep drums and synths with some florid flutes up top to bring the colour and charm. On the flip side is 'Flor De Jazmin' (feat Paz Court - John Beltran remix) which layers in some lovely sunny melodies to the shuffling samba rhythms and expressive vocals.

Bewilderment (3:41)
Review: Well on from his startling 2021 debut 'The Celestial Suite', Los Angeles' neo soul production maestro Pale Jay has since gone on to proffer many a 7" record, of which 'In Your Corner' is the latest treat to feast your ears. Both shorn ahead of time from his latest LP, Bewilderment, 'In Your Corner' and 'Bewilderment' are pensive retro soul falsettoers, both of which feature Jay's own, longing vocals, and evince a mood of being caught in between two difficult paths in life. The A uplifts with its surrounded Hammonds and righteous get-through-it lyrics, concerning self-discovery amid self-judgment. The B-side, by contrast, tells the story of the disintegration of a family, and skews more lo-fi, vintage hip-hop.

Up first is an Afro-beat tinged cut, 'In Your Corner' with a subtly uplifting rhythm although listen deeper and you'll get locked in to the lyrics which detail an internal struggle for self-acceptance. On the flip is the album title cut which showcase Jay's signature sounds - silky falsetto over soulful harmonies and dusty hip-hop beats. It features two cuts from a record which again showcased his ability to craft rich sonic tapestries that are a mix of pure bliss and deep introspection. If you haven't heard it, you should, and you will want to after hearing these two singles. The A-side is a slow disco gem for extroverts and the flip has a lovely falsetto vocal over some nice and dusty rhythms. Pale Jay - "By The Lake" (2:59)
Okonski - "Runner Up" (4:32)
Review: Vocalist Pale Jay and producer/instrumentalist Okonski now freshly join the Karma Chief roster - a sub-label of Colemine focusing on modern funk and soul. In collaboration, the artists demonstrate mastery over their select brand of smooth neo-soul, with Okonski slaying on the keys (building on their talents accrued as part of the acclaimed band Durand Jones and the Indications) and Jay slaughtering it on the vocals. 'By The Lake' is the result of an organic and spontaneous process, where Pale Jay sampled Okonski's piano track Runner Up and wrote lyrics inspired by a conversation with a friend who was dealing with a love dilemma.

Mi Congo Te Llama (Sacred Rhythm Main mix)
Mi Congo Te Llama (Sacred Rhythm dub mix)
Review: "Mi Congo te llama" is sheer sultry house, music for smooth talking gentleman to accompany sleek women around a chandelier lit dancefloor, while on stage the Afro-Caribbean band knock out tremendously soulful and touching jams. The trumpet blares through this track with a tremendous force and energy, implanting its wailing and forlorn brass notes deep inside your mind. The men on stage clap roughly in time with the rhythm as the crowd is worked into an ever growing frenzy of swirling silk gowns and sharp dance moves. The dub mix on the flip dampens the intensity slightly, but what it lacks in impact it makes up for in emotion. The band works its trumpet player hard, muting those crisp brass notes and implanting them deeper into the mix, allowing the rest of the music room to breathe. It's testament to the quality of these edits that, on one side, you'll be spinning flamboyantly around a crowded dancehall, and on the other you'll be gently stroking your lovers hair as you take in a velvet night under the stars.

Review: This time Gamm explores music from the European south with four heavy burners from the Greek production tag team Palov & Mishkin. Together they line up a killer 12" with excellent re-edits and reworks that strikes similarities with Red Astaire or Quantic productions. Included in the package we get a fierce twist on a classic Detroit Spinners track (as sampled on De La Souls "Say No Go")... an absolute floor filler if you ask us! We also get an afro inspired funk jam, a raw and bass-heavy version of Herbie Hancock's "Wiggle Waggle" and finally a swinging jazz-dance version on an old school Oscar Brown Jr tune. "They're All Winners"... just take your pick!

Review: It's always a pleasure to see some new GAMM heat arrive at Juno and the latest twelve from Mad Mats long running edits imprint does not disappoint! Austrian producer David Panda, known for some deep house moves for Dessous and Seasons, comes through with a nice re cut of the classic Marvin Gaye Motowner "I Want You" that adds a subtle house groove to the track. This is matched on the B Side by the contribution from Spatio Edits, upping the pace of Musiq Soulchild's "Forthenight" and slipping in a brilliantly bumping house flex which really works well with the originals string arrangements, whilst R Kelly's "Happy People" gets strapped to a boompty house beat.

Review: Given that both have eclectic musical tastes and play a multitude of instruments, it makes perfect sense that Misha Paniflov and Shawn Lee have ended up working together on a handful of seven-inch singles. 'Volkswagenesque', the opening gambit from the pair's latest "45", is another strong sonic statement. It boasts the sun-kissed warmth and laidback vibe heard on many of Lee's productions, with the duo wrapping glistening guitars, gravelly funk-rock solos, spacey synths and warming bass around a languid, percussion-rich rhythm track. You'll find more weighty, beautifully played percussion on flipside 'Miles Away', a more low-slung and dancefloor-ready affair that features some excellent electric piano playing from Lee.

Review: Fresh from dropping another essential seven-inch with his regular Sound Combo band, Misha Paniflov has joined forces with fellow multi-instrumentalist Shawn Lee for a string of collaborative singles. This "45" sports two genuinely impressive cuts, each full to bursting with quality live instrumentation. It opens with 'Sigmund Jahn Bossa', a superb fusion of late 1960s library jazz (think Roy Budd's score for Get Carter and you're in the right ballpark), bustling bossa-nova and spiralling psych-funk. Over on the flip the pair continue to deliver lounge, influenced, tongue-in-cheek thrills via the cheap, Sideman drum machine rhythms, tumbling guitars, elongated Hammond organ chords and hazy backing vocals of 'Aquaria'.

Review: Stones Throw present this beautiful, silk screened, must have 7" featuring the exceptional talents of Daedelus and James Pants, each taking a side and remixing one of the other's tracks, and both create about as close to perfect reimaginings as would seem possible. On the A-Side, Daedelus takes the crooning intergalactic boogie funk of "Thin Moon", and transforms it into a sweeping orchestral odyssey, filled with lush strings that are reminiscent of vintage John Barry, whilst the B-Side sees James Pants rework Daedelus' "An Armada Approaches", filling in the half-time drums with bouncing drums and funk inspired synth melodies.
