Review: YES! Any self respecting music fan will no doubt already have fully acquainted themselves with Black Messiah, the long promised new album from soul artist D'Angelo and know that it already stands as one of the long players of the year if not the decade! The real fans have probably been waiting for the vinyl release and it's great to see the correct decision has been made to grant Black Messiah a double LP pressing. Everyone no doubt has their favourites on Black Messiah but it's great to have cuts like "Sugah Daddy" on wax, that one is perfect for the house party situations.

Review: TrioRox is a new project uniting three prominent Italian music figures namely pianist Giovanni Guidi, bassist Joe Rehmer, and electronic musician DJ Rocca aka Luca Roccatagliati. Guidi, a jazz piano prodigy, has recorded for ECM and collaborated with Enrico Rava and Ricardo Villalobos before now while Rehmer, an American bass player based in Italy, has worked with jazz greats like Bob Mintzer. Here they combine their skills with Rocca on a record that is a mix of electronic, dance, jazz and pop styles, all with some sleek underlying grooves and hints of electro, classical and minimalism that add up to a real melting pot.

Review: Elephant9, renowned for their electrifying live performances, continues to impress with their upcoming double live album, Catching Fire, recorded during a remarkable 2017 concert in Oslo to celebrate Terje Rypdal's 70th birthday. This release, available on double vinyl through Rune Grammofon, adds to the band's impressive discography, which includes multiple studio albums and live recordings. Catching Fire shares a visceral energy reminiscent of classic live albums from Mahavishnu Orchestra, ELP, and King Crimson, combining moments of intense improvisation with serene interludes. The 22-minute opening track showcases Rypdal's distinctive, glacier-like melodic lines, demonstrating his mastery and unique approach. His synergy with Stale Storlokken, who has supported him for nearly 30 years, creates an inseparable musical dialogue, while the rhythm section of Torstein Lofthus and Nikolai Haengsle ensures a solid, dynamic foundation. With its careful mix aiming to capture the live concert experience, Catching Fire is poised to be a highlight for fans. The world of Norwegian jazz prog never sounded better.

Review: During the various pandemic lockdowns of 2020, BBC Radio Wales suggested to multi-instrumentalist Carwyn Ellis that he joined forces with their National Orchestra of Wales and Brazilian band Rio 18 for a one-off, audience-free concert. In the end, Rio 18 were not permitted to travel, so instead their contributions were recorded remotely and assembled by Ellis and his producer Shawn Lee, to which the orchestrated parts were then added live. Despite this complex recording process, the results are stunning: sublime songs, sung in Welsh, with an attractive mixture of Brazilian rhythms and instrumentation, soaring orchestration and attractive melodies aplenty. It has a conceptual theme - it's meant to be a sort of musical day in Rio - but that doesn't really matter; what matters is the music, and it's uniformly spellbinding.

Review: Last October, acclaimed saxophonist Pharoah Sanders turned 80 years young, and his input on this album is testimony to the fact he has clearly aged like a fine wine. Not that this is to suggest preceding outings were anything less worthy than this collaborative project, which sees Sam Shepherd, the British electronic artist better known to most as Floating Points, write nine spectacular arrangements which are then performed by said brass legend, alongside The London Symphony Orchestra.

The results are spectacular, and wildly far-reaching, albeit firmly rooted in jazz with classical undertones. From the movements that made this final cut, some are whisper quiet and delicate to the point of risking breaking off if you were handling haphazardly. Others are booming loud, musical jumbo jets landing at the end of another great crescendo. Whether hushed or monumental, though, we can feel every note and bar of this masterpiece.

Review: Over the years, Sam Shepheard's work as Floating Points has become increasingly ambitious, moving further away from his dancefloor roots and closer to spiritual jazz, new age and neo-classical. Even so, it was still a surprise when Shepheard announced Promises, a 46-minute piece in 10 "movements" featuring the London Symphony Orchestra and legendary saxophonist Pharoah Sanders. It's an undeniably remarkable piece all told; a constantly evolving fusion of neo-classical ambience, spiritual jazz and starry, synthesizer-laden soundscapes notable not only for Sanders' sublime sax-playing and Shepheard's memorable melodic themes, but also the intricate, detailed nature of the musical arrangements. It's a stunningly beautiful and life-affirming piece all told, and one that deserves your full attention.

Review: Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's first duet album is a definitive collection of classic soul, and still one of Motown's most beloved releases. Featuring four monumental hitsi'Ain't No Mountain High Enough', 'If I Could Build My Whole World Around You', 'Your Precious Love', and 'If This World Were Mine'ithe album showcases the impeccable chemistry between Gaye and Terrell, and their ability to deliver emotional depth with ease. The production, with its lush string arrangements and smooth rhythms, perfectly complements the pair's soulful delivery. Though the album features familiar, chart-topping tracks, it also offers deep cuts that reveal a more intimate side of the duo's connection. The seamless blend of Gaye's rich, velvety voice and Terrell's bright, soaring vocals is the cornerstone of these timeless songs. While Gaye had already earned his place as a key figure in Motown, this collaboration with Terrell would solidify their roles as one of soul music's most iconic duos. United is a masterclass in classic soul, built on love, harmony, and timeless vocals.

His debut album Theme This is a lost classic that is now getting reissued for the first time. It was originally put out via on Gore's GorBra label and is a sensitive, introspective collection of tracks with "Shepherd" Fitz Gore, Ulrich Kurth, Gerard Ebbo, Philippe Zobda-Quitman and Lamont Hampton making up the band. Review: On A New Day, Italian pianist Giovanni Guidi rekindles his enduring musical rapport with Thomas Morgan and Joao Lobo, while expanding the trio's sonic palette by adding American saxophonist James Brandon Lewis, making his ECM debut. Recorded at Studios La Buissonne in Southern France and produced by Manfred Eicher, the album captures an elevated sense of communication and innovation. Lewis's confident, unmistakable tone introduces new dialects and perspectives, enhancing the group's interplay. The quartet navigates fresh instrumental paths with fluidity, inspired by their deep-rooted partnership and heightened collaboration. The result is a dynamic blend of jazz that explores new textures and ideas, showcasing the quartet's cohesive and adventurous spirit. Guidi's piano, Lewis's saxophone, Morgan's double bass, and Lobo's drums come together to create an album that is both reflective and forward-thinking, making A New Day a compelling new listen for Jazz fans.

Review: Following 2014's When The World Was One, Halsall and the Gondwana collective continue their spiritual jazz adventure with another immaculate narrative. Now with much more vocal prowess, singer Josephine Oniyama plays a lead role in the story, adding consistency and personality to the Halsall's swooning, cinematic odysseys. Highlights include the Hathaway-style half spoken/half sung "Badder Weather", the frenetic double bass and brushed drum crescendos of "The Land Of", the (lark) ascending strings and oriental scales of "Cushendun" and the smoky, faraway Coltraneisms of the title track. Modern jazz doesn't get any more authentic than this.

Review: This double CD showcases two live radio broadcasts from jazz hero Herbie Hancock, and each one was recorded two years apart. The first disc features the early Headhunters lineup delivering dynamic jazz-funk with tracks from Manchild and a fresh take on the classic 'Watermelon Man.' The second disc highlights the skills of Jaco Pastorius on bass, and he is joined by James Levi in a tight rhythm section. Herbie Hancock and Bennie Maupin lead with powerful performances including an electrifying version of 'Chameleon.' Together, these recordings capture Hancock's innovative mid-seventies jazz-funk sound in all their glory.

Review: The Three Sounds, one of Blue Note's most productive acts, evolved significantly by 1970. Under the leadership of pianist Gene Harris, the trio welcomed bassist Henry Franklin and drummer Carl Burnett into its ranks, infusing their blues and gospel foundations with a funkier, more vibrant rhythm. This shift is brilliantly captured in Live at the 'It Club', a rousing live recording that highlights their transformation. The record demonstrates how the trio, especially through Burnett's drumming and Franklin's basslines, pushed their sound into funkier territories while maintaining their soulful hard-bop roots. The rhythm section's infectious groove drives the music, giving it a loose, swinging feel where the groove is paramount. Tracks like 'Funky Pullett' and 'Love for Sale' showcase this new dynamic, where the interplay between the trio adds layers of grit and soul to their performances. Live at the 'It Club' remains a thoroughly enjoyable listen with the trio's unique blend of soul-jazz with a fresh, funky twist proudly presented.

Review: Ernie Hawks is the occasional artistic alias of virtuoso flautist and trombonist Erno Haukkala, a Helsinki-based musician best known for his membership of long-serving Finnish funk combo the Soul Investigators. Fittingly, his debut solo album was produced in cahoots with the long-running band. Throughout, his band-mates provide brilliant backing for his languid trombone solos, jaunty flute lines and - on rare occasions - wild harmonica playing. It's a very enjoyable and impressive set, all told, with Haukkala's compositions variously drawing influence from classic soul, Cymande, Ennio Morricone's "Spaghetti Western" soundtracks and the higher quality end of the library music spectrum. Naturally, it's all brilliantly played and produced, with an emphasis on gentle mood enhancement.

Review: Karl Hector and the Malcouns are an interesting proposition. While ostensibly a funk band, their output regularly touches on Afrobeat, exotic Indian instrumentation, trippy psychedelic rock, atmospheric soundtrack fare and wonky, drum-Laden sci-fi weirdness. This sophomore set - their debut, Sahara Swing, dropped in 2008 - includes all these influences and more, offering a vivid, off-kilter journey taking in psychedelic jazz-funk, Arabic instrumental soul and Hammond-laden psychedelic freak-outs. It's hard to pin down, for sure, but that just adds to its' humid, kaleidoscopic allure.

Review: Pianist-composer Vijay Iyer follows his 2021 ECM disc Uneasy - the first to showcase his trio featuring bassist Linda May Han Oh and drummer Tyshawn Sorey - with Compassion, another album in league with these two gifted partners. Compassion, Iyer's eighth release as a leader for ECM, continues his drive to explore fresh territory while also referencing his forebears along the way, two of them long associated with the label. The album includes a powerful interpretation of Stevie Wonder's 'Overjoyed', which Iyer selected as an indirect homage to the late Chick Corea. Another tip of the hat comes with 'Nonaah', a whirlwind of a piece by avant-garde sage Roscoe Mitchell, a key mentor for the pianist. Then there are Iyer's own melodically alluring, rhythmically invigorating compositions, ranging from the pensive title track to the hook-laced highlights 'Tempest' and 'Ghostrumental'.

Deft rhythms, and loosely-laid-down layers of guitar and horn, ride over each other like harmonious, health-giving backings for life across this short statement of nine tracks. Now reissued via Strut, we're reminded of its spiritual mood of tricky electronics and wahhing ambiences, as it slowly expands outwards into a holistic psychedelia, more than the some of its easily discernible parts.

Over the last decade and a half he's turned his hand to everything from dub, techno, dubstep and electro to Balearic beats, downtempo grooves and inspired musical fusions that simply cannot be categorized. His latest excursion - made in cahoots with five-piece Israeli band Tigris -falls into the latter category, offering up a brilliant blend of African and Caribbean rhythms, Turkish psych-funk organ solos, off-kilter electronics, wavy ambient chords and glistening guitars. It's hard to accurately describe but brilliantly produced and hugely entertaining. Don't sleep on this one!

Review: Led by visionary trumpet player Mark Kavuma, this album shows the immense talent of London's jazz scene, blending seasoned musicians with the new generation. Kavuma's ensemble, The Banger Factory, has grown from a quintet to a 20-plus collective, championing diversity and nurturing young talent. The album features original compositions from Kavuma and his bandmates, alongside well-chosen covers, all imbued with a contemporary jazz spirit wrapped in vintage influences. The arrangements are rich and varied, with tracks that evoke hard bop, soul and more modern styles. Highlights include Musshinghi Brian Edwards' hard-driving 'Wayward Return', which features impeccable solos from trumpet, alto sax and piano and the smooth vocal tracks 'Fools Rush In' and 'Evenin'', both brimming with vintage charm. Standout performances from saxophonists Ruben Fox and Theo Erskine, guitarist Artie Zaitz and vocalist Sahra Gure bring depth and dynamism. The album's diverse lineup shines throughout, with each musician given space to contribute their unique voice. The rhythm section, in particular, deserves special mention for its inventiveness and tightness. Kavuma's meticulous arrangements ensure that every track feels cohesive and engaging, making this a captivating celebration of both jazz tradition and innovation.

Review: The Modern Jazz & Folk Ensemble's eponymous album, led by saxophonist Sean Khan, is a captivating tribute to the late 60s and early 70s folk revival, reimagined within a jazz framework. With guest vocalists like Jacqui McShee, Rosie Frater-Taylor, and Kindelan, the album breathes new life into compositions by iconic artists such as Pentangle, Sandy Denny, John Martyn, and Nick Drake. Khan's mastery of the saxophone shines throughout the album, bridging the gap between jazz and folk with finesse. The recent singles, including 'Solid Air' featuring Rosie Frater-Taylor and a mesmerizing rendition of Nick Drake's 'Parasite' with Kindelan, offer a taste of the ensemble's innovative approach to these classic tunes. Driven by Khan's dedication to pushing musical boundaries, The Modern Jazz & Folk Ensemble promises to be a compelling addition to his repertoire, seamlessly blending the timeless allure of folk music with the improvisational spirit of jazz.

Review: Originally released in 1972, Shakara is a shining example of Fela Kuti & The Africa 70 in full flight. Made up of two 13-minute long pieces, the definitive Afrobeat sound is laid out in undulating, impossibly funky form. Tony Allen holds it down on the drums and the brass section from Tony Njoku, Igo Chico, Lekan Animashaun and Kuti himself punches out with urgency. This 50th anniversary release does things a little differently by inviting the excellent Ezra Collective to deliver their own versions of each track, each getting their side to lay down expansive reflections on the trailblazing groundwork laid by Kuti and his bandmates half a century ago.

Review: The Last Poets, pioneers of revolutionary spoken word and proto-rap, return with a powerful new album that blends their fiery lyricism with the infectious rhythms of Afrobeat. 'Africanism' sees the legendary duo, Abiodun Oyewole and Umar Bin Hassan, collaborating with a stellar cast of musicians, including the late Tony Allen, Prince Fatty, and members of Seun Kuti's Egypt 80. The result is a potent and timely exploration of social and political issues, delivered with the same raw energy and uncompromising spirit that has defined The Last Poets' music for over five decades. Abiodun revisits classics like 'When The Revolution Comes' and 'Gash Man', their messages of social justice and self-empowerment still burning bright. Umar's 'Niggers Are Scared Of Revolution' and 'Just Because' remain as potent and provocative as ever, their unflinching commentary on race and inequality cutting through the noise of contemporary discourse. The album's musical landscape is equally captivating, with Tony Allen's polyrhythmic drumming providing a driving force, complemented by the soulful melodies and intricate arrangements of the contributing musicians. A powerful reminder of the transformative power of music and spoken word.

Review: Bill Laurance's Bloom marks a grand transition from intimate duo collaborations to a widescreen orchestral spectacle. Teaming up with Manchester's Untold Orchestra, Laurance delivers a riveting fusion of classical sensibilities, jazz improvisation, and pop grooves. The eponymous opener features dark string chords expanding into a rhythmic journey with piano melodies and hypnotic improvisation. Inspired by his child's imaginative capacity, Laurance crafts a sonic landscape that evokes Baroque, Vivaldi, and modern influences, all while maintaining a sense of wonder and exploration. The Untold Orchestra shines in their tightness and sensitivity, elevating Laurance's compositions to cinematic heights. With Bloom, Laurance strikes a delicate balance between technical mastery and emotive storytelling, creating a stunning listening experience that invites listeners to lose themselves in its dreamlike realms.

Review: Jazz saxophonist Tony Lavorgna, sometimes known as Captain Bad, recorded Chameleon with the St Thomas Jazz Quartet in 1982. The title track is a cover of Herbie Hancock's classic from Head Hunters, given a fresh lick on this superlative album of incredible renditions of long time favourites. Ray Charles' 'Georgia On My Mind', War's 'The World Is A Ghetto' and Dave Brubeck's 'Take The 'A' Train' all get a look in, given a soulful treatment which goes down very smooth indeed. On the strength of these, it's a shame the group never recorded more music together, covers or otherwise.

Review: Jazz doesn't come much more wildy expressive, idiosyncratic, off the cuff, challenging and dense that this album from 1977. The Human Arts Ensemble came together in 1970 in St. Louis adn was a loose collective that associated themselves with the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) and the Black Artists' Group (BAG) collective. They had no rues and no restrictions on who could play and it shows as different instrments shoulder their way to the front and vie for attention, from the drums to the keys, the sax to the double bass. This reissue features the original artwork as well as all new remastered audio and fresh liner notes by Howard Mandel that provide great context.

Review: There was one irrepressible Chicago club act that refused to be replaced by any DJ's sound system. Soul septet Maxx Traxx (and Third Rail before them) commanded a scene unto themselves in the early 80s, playing live five-plus nights a week somewhere in the 312. Their two LPs, both recorded in 1982, are a sheer energy-ride almost too explosive to be captured by studio tape. And yet these two stone-cold classics would remain unanswered by a city, as it moved determinedly toward the motorik sound of house. Hop the turnstile and move with this complete document of Chicago's last great club band told in detailed text, newly revealed photos and complete studio recordings painstakingly remastered.

Featuring Nara Leao's soothing vocals, Edu Lobo's striking guitar and Tamba Trio's vibrant harmonies, 5 Na Bossa captures the essence of Brazilian bossa nova and jazz with a warm and sunny inflexion. Review: The Natural Yogurt Band, purveyors of enigmatic library music, return with their eighth release, a cosmic odyssey that pushes the boundaries of their signature sound. Joined by keyboardist Huw Rees aka The Oracle, the band ventures into a richer galaxy of sonic exploration. 'Projections' sets the stage with its warped organs and gritty drum breaks, while 'Altered States' and 'Bio Morphic Patterns' delve deeper into the cosmic unknown, their swirling melodies and hypnotic rhythms evoking the vastness of space. 'Messages' and 'Nebulous' offer moments of introspection, their ethereal textures and ambient soundscapes creating a sense of otherworldly wonder. On the flipside, 'Perception' and 'Poly Morph' continue the exploration, their pulsating rhythms and experimental soundscapes challenging the listener's perception of reality. 'Existence' and 'Dimensions' close out the journey, their expansive sounds and philosophical undertones leaving a lasting impression. This is a must-listen for those seeking a unique and thought-provoking musical experience.

Review: Is there a more on-point modern jazz label than Chicago's International Anthem? The imprint has a knack of releasing far-sighted music that goes way beyond standard jazz, offering up spiritual and experimental fusions fully in-keeping with the genre's genre-defying roots. This solo set from Tortoise guitarist Jeff Parker - his second for International Anthem following 2016's "The New Breed" - is a superb example. Breathlessly eclectic in the most inspiring of ways, it sees Parker combine virtuoso jazz guitar solos and mangled, guitar-powered aural textures with all manner of live and sampled sounds to create a dizzyingly good album that variously touches on soul-jazz, post-rock, free improvisation, Terry Riley style minimalist soundscapes, ambient, jazz-funk and much more besides. In a word: brilliant.

It was initially captured on January 11, 1992, at Prince's Glam Slam club in Minneapolis and is a performance that showcases Prince and The New Power Generation at their creative peak, just ahead of their epic world tour. Spanning over 100 minutes and 14 tracks in all, the still electrifying set focuses on material from the Diamonds and Pearls era and includes a preview of the then-unreleased 'Sexy M.F.' to make for a fine snapshot of a new era in Prince's evolving sound.

Review: Jimetta Rose and The Voices of Creation's new album, Things Are Getting Better, via Day Dreamer Recordings, is a soul-stirring devotional that blends house, funk, soul, r&b and hip-hop influences. The album opens with the lead single 'Portals,' an invitation to a new way of thinking. With a shuffling groove and soaring vocals, it breaks traditional gospel molds, introducing soulful r&b runs and syncopated verses. Things Are Getting Better is fantastically crafted studio sound, evolving from their raw debut, How Good It Is. The album is composed of non-professional singers and embodies Jimetta's mission to demystify the ministry and spread faith in music's power for positive change. Featuring instrumentalists Isaiah Collier, Ryan Porter, and V.C.R., and recorded at Sunset Sound studios, it encapsulates Jimetta's vision of "Black spiritual classical music". A prolific collaborator with artists like Anderson .Paak and Angel Bat Dawid, Jimetta leads the choir, delivering new mantras for our times. Things Are Getting Better is an example of the power of music, faith, and community.

Review: Japanese-British avant-jazz greatness notably graced the singular hall of London's Cafe OTO in September 2019; drummer Takeo Moriyama and pianist Masahiko Satoh performed for the first time at the esteemed experimental music venue as part of Peter Brotzmann's four-day festival at the venue, and saw their peers, bassist Leon Brichard and tenor saxophonist Idris Rahman, join them for several pieces. While Satoh and Moriyama both formed part of the blistering Yosuke Yamashita Trio - whose output helped spur a critical period in the development of free and modern jazz in Japan - Rahman and Brichard functioned, for a moment, as their contemporary British doppelgangers as splinter members of one of the UK's most notable experimental jazz groups, Ill Considered. The result is a blisteringly free, metrically rule-flouting live performance born of a real confluence of greats.

Improvisation is a traditional part of the gamelan sound of the region and is drawn upon here as his outfit The Indonesian All Stars perform their never before heard ethno-jazz arrangements. They went on tour around Europe and opened the Berlin Jazz Days in 1967. The American jazz trumpeter, composer, arranger, and band leader very much shows off his improvisational skills on flugelhorn and trumpet while his sidemen Renato Chico on piano, Peter Herbert on bass, Dragan Gajic on drums and Tone Jansa on tenor sax do not disappoint either. What better motive, then, to trade on his newly gilded name than to pair up with street drummer George Kano for a transformative set of grooves, in the form of 'Let Me Ride', 'Midnight Lady' and ensuing tracks? That's just what T-Groove has done on his latest record here for P-Vine, incorporating a fusion-like style exquisitely crossing between jazz, rock, Latin and quiet storm. A testament to the chemistry shared between T-Groove and Kano - drummer-and-producer-dyad extraordinaires - this is a well-cooked slice of late night urban fusion and groove.

Review: Erik Tagg's Rendez Vous (1976) is pure seventies soft rock with a touch of jazz fusion, creating a rich, melodic experience. As his second solo effort, it showcases Tagg's evolution from his earlier work with Dutch bands Beehive and Rainbow Train. Produced by Hans Vermeulen, the album is a masterclass in intricate harmonies and sophisticated arrangements, all underscored by Tagg's warm, resonant vocals. Tracks like 'Life Goes On' highlight Tagg's ability to infuse soul-searching lyrics with a smooth, soothing delivery, creating a sound that is both introspective and comforting. The album's lush instrumentation, blending elements of jazz, pop and rhythm & blues, evokes a sense of romantic escapism, making it a hidden gem of the AOR and modern soul genres. Though it didn't achieve mainstream success, Rendez Vous developed a cult following, appreciated for its nostalgic and warm vibes.

Takami's sound often orbits his delicate, jazzy guitar playing, but there's a sumptuous palette of instrumentation which ebbs and flows around it. As well as jazz, there's a strong sense of Japanese environmental music in the over-arching serenity of Next Door. Using the beauty of everyday life experience as inspiration for his meandering instrumental narratives, Takami's latest work is a soundtrack to make even the gloomiest day brighter.

It is the complete live performance of Masayuki Takayanagi's New Direction For The Arts Discography at Inspiration & Power 14 at Shinjuku Art Theatre in 1973, all uncut and as it originally was. The concert has been released before, but only in parts, and now the entire thing arrives on this CD which has only been made possibly a recent discovery of a cassette tape among the belongings of Masayuki Takayanagi, and Otomo Yoshihide, who once studied under Takayanagi. It has been fully restored and sounds great so now sits up there with some of Takayanagi's best works.

From the infectious groove of 'Tonight's the Night' to the reggae-infused 'Can't Get Enough (Nice Up Reggae Mix)', this collection captures a rich blend of UK soul, funk and dance, spotlighting an era of underground brilliance.

Review: British singer Hope Tala makes about as impressive a debut as you could possibly hope for here. Hope Handwritten is full of indelible love letters and brims with the confidence of an artist who has finely honed her craft. The West London singer leans on neo-soul and classic r&b for inspiration while weaving personal narratives with meticulous care. The standout track 'Breaking Isn't What A Heart Is For' exemplifies the album's essence with velvet vocals over beautifully arranged instrumentals that deepen the emotion of her storytelling. Tala's literary background shines through in her direct yet poetic lyrics, which make this one even more of a fine debut.

Review: If Detroit as a collective mind knows what's good for it, it'll note 8 Miles To Moenart as one of its most prized dance albums. Tall Black Guy's debut LP hears a tenth anniversary reissue edition via First Word; the artist known personally as Terrel Wallace recalls his humble Detroit beginnings; he was raised on an early staple diet of Motown, and the phono-dubbed source material of which is here heard breezily funnelled and assembled into ten gaunt, sample-flipping house numbers. But this new edition doesn't fail to switch things up either, in fact presenting it almost as a different record; two new tracks feature, 'From Home To Work, And Back' and 'Running The Motor', on top of an alt-mix of the single 'Mon Amie De'troit', previously only available on 7" vinyl. "While it's nice to reminisce,", says Wallace, "it's important to look forwards, so I wanted to include something new here to represent my progression as an artist, so there's some new versions included, that I created with the help of some jazz musician friends of mine."

Review: Nothing Leaves The House: The Anthology brings together four talented producers who each bring their own flavour to instrumental hip-hop. Tall Black Guy kicks things off with 'One to One,' a jazzy, laid-back track with a smooth groove, followed by 'Solar Coaster For The People,' which ups the energy with its infectious rhythm. Eric Lau's 'Chop For Mr Thing' is a standout, with intricate beats and soulful layers, while Kidkanevil's 'Loopin' Ill' brings playful, quirky melodies. Mr Thing closes the collection with 'Changes,' a funky, groove-driven track that wraps things up on a high note. An essential compilation for fans of soulful hip-hop and jazzy beats.
