Dark & Sinister (5:10)
Dark & Sinister (instrumental) (5:26)
Review: One of Armenian-born, London-based Blade's seminal cuts from the early 90s UK rap scene, capturing the gritty realism of the time. 'Dark & Sinister', featuring MC Mell'o', delivers a powerful, hard-hitting vibe akin to LL Cool J's commanding presence, with an instrumental version on the flip side allows the track's intense atmosphere and production to shine. Often seen as the grandfather of UK rap, Blade plays off a gritty persona with a wicked sense of humour, and this release still resonates today.

Summertime In '92 (1:05)
365 P (Tre Posti) (4:13)
Slow Me Down (feat Douniah) (1:58)
Review: Melodiesinfonie, Bluestaeb and S. Fidelity join forces to form a powerful trio, unveiling a rich nonnet of tracks destined for the universal chillout space. Taking shape in a picturesque studio in the South of France - and then completed in centres from Zurich to Berlin - the likes of '365 P', 'Summertime In '92' and 'Just Give Me The Aux' carry on the sparse and material-sonic tradition that has in recent decades inflected the neo-soul and jazz-electronica worlds. Every track here sounds to have been made with what sounds to the most apparently humble means available; rimshot clicks, wooden hits, impassioned hums and coos, Rhodes chords here and there. Loyal to one rule and one rule only - "we need to stay in the room together to make this a record that feels exciting to us" - the result is an evenhanded five-track flirtation with soul-bearing passion, toeing the hobline of cool and hot.

Conjunto Media Luna/Mumbia Y Sus Candelosos - "Bogotokio" (feat Hydro As BNJ) (3:20)
Mumbia Y Sus Candelosos/Conjunto Media Luna - "Cumbia Teriyaki" (3:30)
Review: Conjunto Medialuna's latest album on Little Beat More is a direct trip to the heart of Bogota's rich cumbia scene. The record blends traditional rhythms with psychedelic influences driven by the Colombian accordion and ecstatic percussion that is so strongly associated with this style. These are two of the jams from it, but frankly you should also check out the full LP. It's a tribute to the guacharaca and the lively street parrandas where each song explores new interpretations of classic sounds. Featuring collaborations with N. Hardem, Mismo Perro, Son Rompe Pera, MC Hydro and Japanese-Latin percussionist Muupy, Noches de Medialuna, it transcends cultural boundaries and joins the dots between traditional and modern urban Latin music which is now so hugely popular around the world.

Add Jamaica's Wayne Daniel on the vocals and another Portland native Madgesdiq on the conscious bars and there's a vibe that sits somewhere between Roots Manuva, YT and Wyclef. Yeah it's that toasty. Inland Knights - "Figure It Out" (Mark Farina's Mushroom Jazz edit) (4:10)
Review: The Frosted label is back with more brilliance from Inland Knights in the form of this newly remastered version of the classic 'Figure It Out.' It was first put out back in 2013 as the first release on the label and remains a vital tune from the British pair. On the flip, Mark Farina is one of those hallowed producers who always has his own unique sonic signature, most famously under his Mushroom Jazz alias. His edit brings plenty of depth and broken beat lushness with noodling guitar riffs and spoken words making it a backroom gem.

Hot Winter (Dreaming About Being Closer) (3:46)
Review: James Massiah is already regarded by those in the know as one of London's most vital poetic voices and this potent two-tracker only serves to add weight to that reputation. It pairs lo-slung, richly textured beats with razor-sharp lyricism from the off with 'Holland Park,' produced by Shimz343, finding Massiah narrating a cryptic tale over lush strings and jagged rhythms that channel the great Gil Scott-Heron. On the flip, 'Hot Winter' drips with jazz poetry swagger, chopped flutes and dusty breaks with Massiah riding the beat with effortless fluidity. He proves himself a timeless narrator here, half street prophet, half storyteller, but a stylish, witty bridge between past and present with lyrical gravitas.

Review: Merwyn and Inkswel's latest is a refreshing blend of deep house and leftfield flair. The title track, 'Eternal Freedom', kicks off with a broken beat groove and a powerful vocal delivering a message about liberation, fusing deep house with an inventive rhythmic style. 'Cloud Eaters' follows with a soulful vibe that channels early 80s funk, creating an uplifting and nostalgic energy. 'Skyline' rounds out Side-1 with its own unique twist on house, pushing creative boundaries in style. On Side-2, Linkwood's remix of the title track injects a spacey disco vibe, layering a deep house groove with subtle funk elements that feel both classic and fresh. Gb's remix takes the track in a different direction, dialing back the energy with laid-back, 80s-inspired electro textures, offering a relaxed and introspective vibe. Sugar Free (vocal) (4:38)

Review: Descendant, minor key seduction-funk from Miracle Thomas, whose sucrose and fructose levels are indeed incredibly low. A-sider 'Sugar Free' is a remake of Jarry Barnes and Katreese Barnes' brother-sister duet of the same name, which they made under the name Juicy, in turn a "response record" to Mtume's 1985 hit 'Juicy Fruit'. Miracle's miraculous new version brings the original 1985 number a heck of a long way, effectively conveying the newfound, cold-turkey loneliness felt during the day, presumably post-breakup. The dub on the B is a rare disco-funk-dub version too, perfect for those DJs preferring to segue into the more cosmic outer reaches of things.

Once again they have cooked up a gem for the modern funk scene and the instrumental version allows you to fully appreciate the depth of the production without the vocals. A heady tagine of grime, beats, techno, global bass and contemporary electronica with a title that either refers to famed Moroccan popstar or, far more likely, relates to meaning as 'universe', Dounia is a beguiling clash of western electronics and eastern bars, lyrics, and vocal harmonies. Review: Brazilian rapper Marcelo D2 shares the release of new direct-to-disc album via Night Dreamer. Recorded alongside electrifying live band Sambadrive, the album revisits some of Marcelo D2's most important tracks, mining 25 years of groundbreaking music from the Brazilian legend, and capturing his now timeless 'samba hip-hop' sound in full flow. The aforementioned is an unusual yet compelling sound, marking the voice and style of a torchbearer and innovator, and not the last to be marked by the motto "looking for the perfect beat". Now, in 2024, D2 retells his story from a new perspective. Inspired by the iconic jazz-samba trios of the 60s and 70s, Sambadrive emerged from the improvised and often spontaneous jams that would preface Marcelo D2's live shows. Touring the world and reuniting with producer Mario Caldato Jr., the group dropped in on Haarlem's Artone Studio in October 2022 to record an album of 10 tracks, drawn from four of Marcelo D2's most loved albums.

Review: MC Money and Gangsta Gold's collaboration offers a glimpse into the hard-hitting underground sound of Memphis rap, capturing the raw energy and stark realities of the city in the 90s. The tracks feature gritty, no-frills vocals, driven by bass-heavy beats and shadowy synths that mirror the harsh streets of Frayser. The music remains unapologetically rough around the edges, yet there's an undeniable sense of purpose behind each trackian unwavering honesty that demands attention. It's not just about the aggressive delivery or tough subject matter; it's about a snapshot of a time and place that continues to resonate. Each beat pulses with a sense of urgency, while the lyrical content cuts straight to the heart of Memphis' rap scene, without pretense or over-production. There's something undeniably compelling about its rawnessia reminder of the power of minimalism when it's done with conviction.

Review: Megan Thee Stallion's third studio album, 'Megan', marks her debut as an independent artist and reveals her personal truths with unflinching candor. The project opens powerfully with the chart-topping single 'Hiss', setting a bold tone. As the album unfolds, tracks like 'Rattle' and 'Figueroa' feature sharp disses and familiar themes.Megan shines in pieces like 'B.A.S.' and 'Otaku Hot Girl', where she demonstrates her lyrical strength and clever references. The album shifts towards introspection with 'Moody Girl' and 'Cobra', where she grapples with darker emotions, ultimately showcasing her vulnerability. Although some songs feel like straightforward rap without innovation, the overall structure is cohesive, with each track building on the last. While the polished album artwork contrasts with the rawness of the content, Megan is a strong effort. It is a worthwhile listen that captures Megan's multifaceted identity as an artist.

Review: MF Doom's 2004 release marked a high point in the hip-hop don's discography, brimming with his signature blend of inventive production and intricate wordplay. Across the album, he uses food-related metaphors to delve into themes of vice, violence, and the complexities of ego. 'Beef Rapp' opens the record with a sharp critique of conflict within hip-hop, while tracks like 'Hoe Cakes' and 'One Beer' explore indulgence, escapism, and excess with Doom's trademark wit. The track 'Rapp Snitch Knishes' is a direct jab at the contradictions of self-incrimination, highlighting the absurdities of some rappers' behavior. With its blend of humour, sharp social commentary and a deft lyrical style, this album remains a standout in the genre, demonstrating Doom's ability to layer serious themes with a playful touch.

Review: Michi Guerrero aka Michi sets upon unleashing her debut album Dirty Talk unto the world. The LA-based singer-songwriter begun in pop before finding her truer feet in making warm neo-soul, in which discipline she has remained. Backing up a recent throng of exquisite Knxwledge flips of her earliest singles, the new record documents productions of a near-equal calibre from Blake Rhein (Durand Jones & The Indications) and Paul Cherry. Retroistic, channelling a Motown-reminiscent sound, the lyrics deal in interpersonal dilemmas unique to the modern day; hear the a-romantic de-subjectvations of 'If You Want Me' and the existentialisms of 'There's No Heaven', the latter being a prize house music cut, not to be missed by DJs.

His sharp, introspective lyrics resonate with authenticity, recounting life's struggles over boom-bap beats that feel both nostalgic and fresh. The production complements his style, layering raw, rhythmic foundations beneath his reflective verses. This release is a throwback to when hip hop was more about narrative and substance than spectacleipacked with depth, grit and realness. It's a return to form that will satisfy fans of classic, unfiltered rap.

Review: This second posthumous album from the late Mac Miller dropped in 2018 after being recorded but never released back in 2014. In some ways, it joins the dots between his early career style - an earnest rapper with plenty of attitude - and the more thoughtful songwriter he became in later life. There is still plenty of sadness and melancholy hidden between the beats and amongst the lines of these tunes which are built on keys, drums and bass with only the subtlest of production tweaks. 'Do You Have A Destination?' is a richly layered sound with fragment vocals, 'Stoned' is woozy and deep with gorgeous guitar licks, 'Funny Papers' showcases Mac's unique vocal stylings over more trad beats and 'Manakins' is another smudged late night sound with a heartfelt undertone.

Review: This double-platinum album marks a milestone in the career of one of hip-hop's most influential figures, showcasing a bold blend of rap, pop and r&b. With its varied production styles and genre-defying sound, it captures Nicki Minaj at her most versatile and confident. The production is lush and polished, featuring both hard-hitting beats and smooth, melodic hooks. Throughout, there's a sense of both vulnerability and strength, making it a deeply personal yet universally relatable record. The album's balance of catchy pop hooks and hard-hitting rap ensures its place as a standout in Minaj's discography, cementing her as a force in contemporary music. Fans are sure to appreciate the album's long-awaited vinyl release - many say this is her best.

It's an ambitious 12-track album bursting with her signature vibrant energy, distinctive vocals and plenty of genre-defying sound fusions. She is a singer and songwriter known for her affirming lyricism and joyous spirit, and this long player more than showcases that unique sonic identity. Full Moon was recorded across multiple locations while touring and that has resulted in a dynamic, introspective yet electrifying collection of tracks. "I can make any genre; I have fun creating music because I'm not limited," Sanelly explains of her club-ready beats which fuse elements of electronic, Afro-punk, edgy pop, kwaito and hip-hop to deliver an eclectic and boundary-pushing auditory experience.

Electronic Funkysht* blends funk, rap, soul, electro and techno with vocal and instrumental tracks that define Detroit's cutting-edge sound. Review: A track per year is said to have gone into the making of Quasimoto's 2013 hip-hop 12-tracker. The long haul is documented across a quirky, frequency-surfing selection, which at times veer from the usual wonky, tongue-in-cheek, nasally prod-rap flows and into subvertised sound collage. 'Seasons Change', for example, detours into a bolshy sample tapestry about alcoholism and the substitution of natural highs for synthetic high. Even so, it's the irreverent, conversational miasmas of 'Youngblood', 'Planned Attack' and 'LAX to JFK' that really define this mixtape slash compilation from the yellow Madlib alter-ego.

Review: Nothing Leaves The House: The Anthology brings together four talented producers who each bring their own flavour to instrumental hip-hop. Tall Black Guy kicks things off with 'One to One,' a jazzy, laid-back track with a smooth groove, followed by 'Solar Coaster For The People,' which ups the energy with its infectious rhythm. Eric Lau's 'Chop For Mr Thing' is a standout, with intricate beats and soulful layers, while Kidkanevil's 'Loopin' Ill' brings playful, quirky melodies. Mr Thing closes the collection with 'Changes,' a funky, groove-driven track that wraps things up on a high note. An essential compilation for fans of soulful hip-hop and jazzy beats.
