Fighting For Your Life (After Dark mix) (5:36)
Review: Lockdown Records has put together this useful new 12" which offers up the notorious duo of Matt Early & Lee Jeffries. 'Fighting for Your Life' is a classic pop single that comes with the electrifying Blood on the Dancefloor Mix and the sultry After Dark Mix, both of which are inspired by the iconic sounds of Michael Jackson. J.K.'s 'You & I' is something of a classic and hard-assed hose workout form 1994 that has been remixed and reissued and number of times since. Real name Marta Simlat, the project was made up by Italian producers Larry Pignagnoli and Davide Riva and this was their biggest success. This latest release of it kicks off with 'You & I' (Bliss Team remix) which is seriously heavy and dark with dystopian synth fizz. The Guitar Mix is even more frosty and all consuming then the Classic '95 remix is beatdown techno with a dark, menacing heart and the club 95' remix is all about unsettling synth blasts and scratchy noise.

The mellow piano tones and smooth bassline create a stunning backdrop, allowing Norah's expressive guitar work to flourish. Celebrating their roles in the London musical, the EP commemorates their stint from September 2023 to January 2024 at the Kit Kat Club, where Taylor starred as Sally Bowles and Shears as Emcee. This production, based on John Van Druten's play and Christopher Isherwood's stories, has garnered seven Olivier Awards, including Best Musical Revival. Review: 25 years.... Very few things make you feel older than album anniversaries. And very few albums hit such a celebratory age in as much style. Arguably Jacko's last genuinely great album, Quincy Jones's productions still sparkle with funk and flare across the varied genres explored throughout the set. No track descriptions necessary in this review - you're either old enough to remember it the first time around, and want to celebrate this moment in time with an awesome LP. Or you missed it the first time around and want to play catch up with an awesome LP. Either way, this is a fine moment in pop, funk, dance and Michael Jackson history.

It was in that year that he was on one of his many epic world tours and this night in particular took him to Yokohama Stadium. The maverick performer and gifted vocalist worked through what were already some of his most tired and tested hits such as 'Beat It', 'I Just Can't Stop Loving You' and 'Bad' while he also served up a rare Jackson 5 medley in which he mixed up 'I Want You Back/The Love You Save/Can You Feel It'. Classic.

Produced by Quincy Jones, this album marks Jackson's transformation into the King of Pop, showcasing a blend of funk, disco and r&b that resonates with an enduring freshness. There are monster hits like 'Little L' and cheeky bangers aplenty dotted throughout this pearler of an album, and despite how long ago it came out, it hasn't aged a bit.

Review: Although much derided by some sections of the listening public, Jamiroquai were arguably trailblazers. These days, tight live bands making music inspired by '70s and '80s funk, soul and disco are ten-a-penny, but back in 1992 they were a rarity. The time seems right, then, for Automaton, Jay Kay and company's first album in seven long years. Musically, it contains plenty of tracks in their now familiar style - dancefloor-focused, radio-friendly goodtime grooves - but also nods towards more electronic styles of dance music such as synth-pop, P-funk and boogie. As a result, it feels like a storming return to form that should delight hardcore fans and casual listeners alike.

After so many knockout albums they just kept it coming with this sixth one, holding fast to the disco house vibe they'd picked up on A Funk Odyssey. Finding a sweet spot between the more organic jazz funk of their earlier work and the floor-focused grooves of their later period, this album is another flawless demonstration of their sharp musical chops and their killer instinct for a stone cold groove. It's not been repressed since it first came out, so you know there will be a lot of fans itching to get their mitts on this slice of superlative funky business from one of the best groups to ever do it.

Review: Jamiroquai's The Return Of The Space Cowboy celebrates its 30th anniversary with a special reissue on "moon grey" vinyl. This edition includes Michael Gray's 2024 Good Vibe Zone edit of 'Space Cowboy', available on a physical release for the first time. The redesigned packaging, featuring foil accents, enhances the original album's iconic cover. Released in 1994, The Return Of The Space Cowboy solidified Jamiroquai's place in music, following their successful debut Emergency On Planet Earth. Fans praised its blend of jazz, funk, and soul, The album achieved platinum status in the UK, France, and Japan, and its single 'Space Cowboy' became a hit, topping the U.S. Billboard Dance charts. Musically, the album toned down its predecessor's "acid" influences in favor of funk and jazz, with tracks like 'Half The Man' and 'Stillness In Time' having a more mature sound. Political themes, such as on 'Manifest Destiny', highlighted the band's growth, addressing issues of racial injustice and homelessness. Timeless and genre-defying, The Return Of The Space Cowboy remains a classic, with its influence felt in artists like Missy Elliott and Tupac Shakur, who sampled its tracks. This reissue commemorates its enduring legacy.

Review: With a slew of releases for Dirty Hit, it was only a matter of time before Amber Bain's project, The Japanese House, would find its debut album release. Good at Falling presents Bain's vocal talent at its fullest, with vocoder work to rival the best of pop to come out of Istanbul's studios or Kolkata's streets - see "Went To Meet Her". Ethereal and poppy, there's comparisons to be made with the music of Ladyhawke in an album that subtly dabbles in genres likes post-dubstep (see "Wild") to cosmic disco and emotional electronica (see "Everybody Hates Me") across an album that's proud and steadfast in its folky, singer-songwriting form.

Review: LA singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jenny O finally shares her latest LP Spectra via Mama Bird. Described as "the outcome of Jenny O.'s reflections on what it means to be a weirdo, to communicate, and, ultimately, to be useful", Spectra is a technicolour, implied neurodiverse, morphology of indie rock turned multi-genre oddism, reflecting the artist's increasing expansion into ever-wider directions as her career has progressed. Though she began as a double-bassist and trained composer, Spectra reflects a far wider gamut than those credentialisms might suggest - the likes of 'Prism' and 'There Is A Club' recall everything from the beauteous trip-hop lilts of Lamb to the call-and-response acapella stylings of Imogen Heap.

Review: By the occasion of her third studio album in August 2015, Carly Rae Jepsen was already an established global pop star. The album immediately debuted at #15 in the Canadian Albums Chart and features fan-favourite singles such as 'I Really Like You' and 'Run Away With Me'. It was recorded in studios all over the US and also in Stockholm and found Carly moving away from the super happy bubblegum pop of early albums and towards a more indie-leaning sound inspired by 1980s styles and alternative acts. The resulting synth-pop sounds got rave reviews from fans and critics alike.

Packed with all the infectious hooks, lush production and heartfelt lyrics you would expect from a pop album, it also offers euphoric dancefloor anthems (such as 'Now That I Found You', 'Want You in My Room') with introspective, melancholic moments on 'Too Much' and 'The Sound'. Jepsen's knack for capturing love's highs and lows with sincerity and charm makes Dedicated an irresistible listen packed with playful grooves and 80s-inspired beats as well as joyful and bittersweet emotions.

Review: Carly Rae Jepsen's latest album The Loveliest Time is said to be a loose companion and something of a thematic inversion of her record The Loneliest Time from last year. It is the third in a series of B-side albums that present her as a likeable everywoman who is self depreciating and always full of conviction. Returning collaborators include Rostam, Patrik Berger, John Hill, and Kyle Shearer, and musically the record is her most diverse to date with everything from IDM-adjacent sounds to French touch and beyond with looping vocal samples and plenty of unabashed emotion.

Review: As you probably know, pop music in Korea is a multi million dollar business with several leading bands all boasting vast and undying fanbases willing to spend plenty of money on anything and everything relating to their favourite act. BTS is one of the biggest of the lot and South Korean singer Jimin is one of the members of the group who has done a solo album. Face is it and now it arrives on white vinyl after initial release back in 2022. It was all co-written by Jimin and was inspired by the emotional impact of the COVID-19 pandemic so addresses "themes of loneliness, wrestling with oneself, and finding freedom".

Review: This Swedish duo excels in placing classic pop through a particularly beguiling contemporary prism, resulting in a sound that's both naggingly catchy and utterly unfamiliar, buoyed by charisma, invention and radiant atmosphere. Part electronic torch song, part enigmatic and alien allure, this mysterious partnership excels equally at whip-smart modern pop a la Lorde and ethereal splendour not unlike a '60s chanteuse resurrected to front The Knife, and look set to continue to both flummox and enchant the indie world and beyond with 'V'.

Review: Daniel Johns is a bonafide Australian rock powerhouse - with or without bandmates. The primary songwriter, guitarist and frontman of Silverchair, an outfit who among other things claim more ARIA Awards than any other name in the ceremony's history, he's also one half of acclaimed duo The Dissociatives with Paul Mac and shares a second partnership with Luke Steel on the Dreams project.

All that aside, his first solo album, 2015's Talk, reiterated his ability to turn hands to almost any musical style, packing his oeuvre with a range of great ideas. Futurenever is the second lone wolf LP, and backs up the idea that he's insanely talented and relentlessly restless. Across the 12 tracks, we're given great pop in the truest sense ('D4ngersboy', 'Someone Call An Ambulance', 'Freaknever'), huge symphonic R&B balladry ('When We Take Over'), sexy funk ('I Feel Electric'), and stadium emo rock ('Reclaim Your Heart').

Review: A great example of how critics are often not all right, when Jack Johnson dropped his third studio album, In Between Dreams, music writers the world over adopted partisan positions. Some believed this definitely was worthy of catapulting him from Pretty Famous Acoustic Surf Rock Guy Popular With People Who Went Travelling Post-Millennium, to global superstar. Other were pretty non-plussed.

Suffice to say, we all know who won in the end - Jack Johnson. In Between Dreams rocketed to high chart positions, reaching number one in Australia and the UK, and number two in America, returning to reclaim that US position upon reissue in 2013. One of the most familiar records of the last couple of decades, even if you've never actually owned a copy (partly the result of all the advertising licensing that has taken place), perhaps now is the time to rectify that ownership issue.

Under the supervision of legendary dub players Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, and with Wally Badarou lending a hand on keyboards, the iconic model-turned-singer recorded Warm Leatherette, an album of reggae and synth-pop-infused cover versions. Howard Jones Sings What Is Love
Cat: CHYR 29184631.
Review: Howard Jones was an icon of the synth-pop era of the early 80s, with a few major hits which have since been etched into the memories of anyone in reach of a radio well into the 90s. While his major breakthrough came with the 1984 album Human's Lib, there was also a curious compilation put together in Japan entitled Howard Jones Sings What Is Love? which pulled together some of his early singles, including extended 12" mixes, but the release never made it past promo stage. As such, it's been a collectors item for a long time, and now Cherry Red have given it a first official release with attention to detail in the artwork and English translation of the original Japanese sleeve notes.

Review: The widely adored jazz and pop crooner Norah Jones is back with another super soothing new album. Vision arrives on the legendary Blue Note and is the ninth full-length from the singer-songwriter but the first in collaboration with Leon Michels who is an instrumental maestro behind the El Michels Affair. He brings plenty of musical richness and charming hooks and melodies to the smoky and soulful vocals of Jones. All 12 tunes are vibrant and joyous as Jones sings about feeling free, wanting to dance, making it right, and acceptance of what life brings. It's a more uplifting work following on from the melancholic vibe of her last outing Pick Me Up Off The Floor which was released early in the early pandemic days of 2020.

Review: Despite her superstar status, gained in the years following her 2002 debut, Norah Jones has refused to stick to the same musical script, instead choosing a wide range of collaborators while applying her song writing talents to a variety of genres. On Visions, she's once again evolved her sound further in cahoots with producer Leon Michels - founder of revivalist funk-soul stable Big Crown Records and long-time member of the Dap-Kings. What's on offer is pleasingly fuzzy and nostalgic in tone, with the pair conjuring up songs and sound worlds rooted in late 60s garage-soul, psychedelic dream pop, and a brand of Americana rooted as much in black American music as country. For proof, check superb recent singles 'Running' and 'Staring at the Wall'.

Review: Norah Jones have travelled far from her debut album in 2002, but it would be tough for her to match the knockout success she found with that first canny fusion of pop, jazz, country and soul. She won five Grammys for the certified diamond Come Away With Me, including Record Of The Year and Best New Artist. Listening back after all this time the big hits 'Don't Know Why' and the title track sound as spellbinding as ever, and now Blue Note are issuing this special four-vinyl edition with a mammoth amount of unreleased tracks, session takes and alternate versions. For Jones fans, of which there are literally millions, this will be hard to resist.

Review: "Besides selling 40 million albums and winning 9 Grammys in less than
10 years, over the years Norah Jones has collaborated with dozens and
dozens of artists from across the spectrum of music. This album collects
Norah's favorite collaborations from 2001-2010 into one amazing
collection: legends like Ray Charles, Willie Nelson and Herbie Hancock,
rock artists ranging from Foo Fighters to Ryan Adams to Belle and
Sebastian, hip hop luminaries OutKast, Q-Tip and Talib Kweli. No
matter the genre however, Norah's enchanting voice is the common
denominator and while the partners are varied, she ends up owning
every song and this album is a wonderful collection that holds together
brilliantly. The album is a testament to Norah's status as one of the most
in-demand and tasteful musical connectors in music. This album will
be an amazing gift item for any Norah fan and will be hard to miss this
holiday season and then again for Valentine's Day.

Review: American singer and musician Jordy (Jordan Shulman) furthers his brand of lip-biting, suspended latex pop with a new album, following 2021's Mind Games and 2023's Boy. Sluing towards vocal-driven power pop, Jordy flaunts a homosexual, autosexual heat, with bound beats and rebounding gum rubber basses. 'Cruise', 'I Don't Want A Boyfriend', and the title track all charge the libidinal battery as much, with moods of tarry bubblegum glitz turned car-crash gunk. Meanwhile, the more experimental moments such as 'Men' verge on pitch-warbled electroclash, making for a pleasingly turned-on album.
