Chemistry Of Love (reissue)
Cat: RS7 014. Rel: 24 Nov 22
Chemistry Of Love (3:58)
Chemistry Of Love (version) (3:59)
Review: Susan Cadogan's vocals are perfect for lovers' rock. She can go from real innocence to steamy sexuality in an instant and for that reason was quickly swooped up by Lee "Scratch" Perry back in the reggae heyday. On this one she's in a breezy mood, with soaring vocals and crystal clear delivery riding over a nice fresh rhythm. It is a modern reggae sound with digital production and bright synths over the rumbling drums and bass. The flip side version ups the island vibes with more sunshine, more playful percussion and vibes to spare.

You Know How To Make Me Feel So Good (5:01)
Review: Susan Cadogan is an esteemed reggae vocalist who has been since the 1970s. Now she continues her musical journey with this cover single which is taken from her excellent 2020 album Hurt So Good - Storybook Revisited, distributed by Burning Sounds. Side-A features a rendition of the reggae classic by Dawn Penn, while Side-B offers a sweet soul interpretation of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes' track. Enhanced with Japanese-inspired artwork on the jacket, this release showcases Cadogan's timeless talent and versatility as it bridges the gap between reggae and soul music across generations.

Review: The Magnetics was formed in 2017 and bring a fresh fusion of vintage Jamaican sounds with elements of 60s ska, early reggae and rocksteady all couched din a soul and R&B style. This new 45rpm is another glorious one with the superb vocals of Susan Cardigan bringing the sunshine to 'My Oh My' with its Hammond chords and snaking bass. The flip side is another slow and seductive sound with more classic reggae instrumentals and another standout turn from Cardigan. The dusty production is as authentic as it comes.

My Baby Just Care For Me (2:46)
Review: During the 1970s, Cornell Campbell made some fantastic records with producer Bunny Lee. 'My Baby Just Care For Me', a favourite amongst the lovers rock-powered 1970s blues party scene in London, is undoubtedly one of their best joint efforts. The riddim is loose and languid, the added piano solos pleasingly expressive and jangling, and Campbell soulful lead vocal tterly beguiling. Chunkier, more dancefloor-friendly roots reggae vibes are the order of the day on flipside cut 'Jah Jah He Morn Ya', where Campbell's vocal improvisation between verses add even more energy to an already heavyweight jam. In a word: essential.

Review: The legendary reggae vocalist Cornell Campbell celebrated the 52nd anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luthur King Jr on 4th April 2021 by getting i the studio. His new EP comprises some fine new interpretations of soul music's most iconic tunes about race, identity and injustice. First up are two versions of Michael Kiwanuka's 'Black Man In A White World', which hit home hard on a nice rolling riddim. On the flip side is 'Outernational Blues' which is a super take on the absolute stone cold Marvin Gaye classic 'Inner City Blues'. Crucial sounds for challenging times.

On the A side of this inaugural 7' we have Jamaican legend Cornel Campbell (of Studio One fame) with the 1975 vibe of 'Hold On', while over on the flip we have the version by The 18th Parallel's - the production team behind the record comprised of Antonin Chatelain and Mathias Liengme.

Deputy Dawg (3:28)
Deputy Dawg (dub) (3:28)
Review: Jahug is a brand new label that kicks off with a heavy rhythm from Carl I aka producer Carl Gayle. 'Deputy Dawg' is the tune and it has a low-slung low end that is couched in plenty of warm reverb. The vocals up top are raw and unaffected and filled with a sense of yearning. Add in some fresh hits and classic reggae guitar riffs and you have a nice fresh roots cut. On the flip, more horns are brought to the fore to give it some subtle warrior energy while extra effects and fleshy reverb all add more weight to the original.

The Stopper (remix) (3:00)
OG Ranks (remix) (3:04)
Review: CASQUIAT's ability to balance heavy, floor-filling beats with thoughtful, experimental layers is on full show in this new 7" from DATUM. The two cuts push the boundaries of hip-hop and bring in a raw electronic edge. 'The Stopper' is a high-energy cut that collides skittering percussion and intricate rhythms to make for an intense yet hypnotic club vibe. In contrast, OG Ranks takes a deeper, more introspective route with moody undertones, spacious production, and a sharp focus on atmospheric tension. They make for a fine yin and yang and cannot fail to make their mark in the club.

Review: The hard-digging record fiends at Kalita are back with more brilliance. This one is the first-ever retrospective of work by Jamaican-born artist Desmond Chambers. The first tine is a proudly politically aware tune previously only avialbel on his 1987 album Tiger Born, while the single 'The Morning Show' has before now only been available as the B side of little known single 'I Have Seen Love In Your Eyes.' The two other tracks are mega cult, hugely loved acid-infused dub snakers with boogie-infused rhythms. Original copies will cost you a huge amount so make sure you snap this one up asap.

This one is a reissue of Al Charles' take on the Gap Band's "Outstanding". It's a swaggering number with extra bass weight layered in beneath the soaring vocal and some lush future-retro chord work. Review: Dubquake Records have got a hefty one on their hands here: O.B.F's 'Fufu Lala' is a seriously dangerous tune with great vocal work from featured artists Charlie P and Aza Lineage. The French sound system crew really step it up here and push dub in new directions with a heavy cross pollinated sound that takes in roots, grime and dancehall before spitting out the freshness. The Charlie P tracks are super personal works that are a precursor, so we hear, to a big new mixtape project. They find him taking aim at influentual music industry cats who are largely self serving, while some sweet remixes take care of the flip side.

Teddy Charmer - "All In My Life" (2:48)
Gregory Isaacs - "Dancing Floor" (2:18)
Review: The magical 'All in My Life' is an unreleased and heartbroken lovers rock steady track sung by a humble figure over a smooth rhythm. While missing the glamour of a horn section, it's driven by a lilting organ reminiscent of Buster Allstars. The B-side, 'Dancing Floor,' is the only song Gregory Isaacs recorded under Buster's production and so it is a rather rare gem. It features a melancholic melody and Isaacs' signature sweet voice that very much come from the golden age of early reggae. Both tracks showcase a raw side of the genre and as they are lesser known, they are sure to make a big impact whenever played.

It come son bright yellow wax and opes with 'New Life' which is a classic and tough stepper with tumbling bass notes, wet hits and endless reverb all making it a plump, inviting, fat as you like dub sound. Review: Spanish label Rocafort started 2019 by releasing their first dub reggae "45", so it's fitting that they are ending the year with a sequel from the same act, The Circle of Confusion. Like its' predecessor, "Yesterday Was History" features lead vocals from Studio 1 singer Cornell Campbell. His soulful intonation works wonderfully above the band's hazy, heavy and ear-pleasing digi-dub backing track. Arguably even better is the band's own flipside "Dub" mix, which is as weighty, spaced out and intoxicating as the largely digital dubs pioneered by British scene stalwart Mad Professor. It's worth buying the seven-inch just to get your hands on it.

This tidy 7" heads all the way back to 1969 for The Cobb's 'Joe Gibbs Mood', which was procured by the eponymous Joe Gibbs, who grew up in Montego Bay then Kingston, and brings all those reggae flavours to this tune. Viajando (Kejeblos dub) (5:02)
Review: This is a very confident debut from previously unheralded Balearic musician Pablo Color, whose music - on this evidence, at least - is as vibrant as his musical moniker suggests. The Swiss producer begins with the warm and atmospheric "Viajando", where echo-laden electric guitar motifs rise above a gently shuffling dub disco groove. "The Sunset of Puerto Sagunto" sees him sliding into Jonny Nash style ambient territory, while "The Guitar & The Sea" is a crackling, intoxicating, bongo-driven weird-out that sounds like an unlikely hook up between Black Merlin and Mudd. The EP is completed by a fantastic deep space dub of "Viajando" by Kejeblos (with support from Lexx on keyboards). Impressive stuff, all told.

'Margarita' and its dub counterpart 'Nene' form a lush duo that marks a new phase in Combo Chimbita's evolving sound. This artist has a long history of crafting "deep dub electronic swing" in his roles in Mock & Toof, FX Mchm and his 6000 Degrees project. They are still riding high of the likes of breakout early tunes 'Eastern Ska' and 'Short Break' and on the same day in March have got two red hit new 45rpms dropping. Earth Sound (part 1) (2:35)
Earth Sound (part 2) (2:39)
Review: Manchester, Jamaica-born ukulele playing legend Ernest Ranglin was one of the forefathers of the ska moment in the 1950s and was later a resident at Ronnie Scott's in London. Count Ossie meanwhile was a Nyahbinghi drumming maestro who lay the famous playing style down on record for the first time in the 60s. Together they cooked up this two-part gem in 1970 and it will cost you a few quid to find a decent copy these days. This reissue on Gay Feet allows you to get your hands on some real history as the world Afro-Cuban, jazz, African and folk all collide with reggae in superb fashion.

King In My Empire (King version)
Review: This is the deepest tune produced by R&S so far. The veteran singer Colonel Campbell provides a song with undeniable beauty. The backing track laid by RS makes clear that a world class production team has been on the job. Detailed refinements in every aspect of the sound sphere are showing that R&S did not rest. The dub version is featured on the B-side.

Review: Everybody Plays The Fool is the second album by The Chosen Few, a reggae group from Kingston, Jamaica, formed in 1969. They were big news in the 70s and 80s and still have fans all over the world. This record first came in 1975 on the legendary Trojan Records label and traverses some of their finest moments. There's gentle lovers rock, fine covers of greats like 'Second That Emotion' and deep cut reggae rhythms like 'Reggae Stuff'. The production is tight, riddims slick and the falsetto lead vocal never fails to get you where it hurts, particularly on the iconic 'My Thing.'

Review: The fascinatingly future-facing reggaeton pairing of Clara! and Maoupa Mazzocchetti unleash their stunning debut album here on Low Jack's Editions Gravats. The Brussels based pair offer eight new cuts that include lead single "Badman". Future trap beats, whirring machines and neon, dayglo synths all light up these bottom-heavy tracks while the frosty, zero fucks given vocals of Clara Amfo finish each track with real power. Instrumentals are also included, but the originals sure do take some beating.

Review: Clint Eastwood's African Youth album was originally released in 1978 and now Radiation Roots present a welcome reissue. Eastwood's older brother Trinity was a mainstay on the systems of Western Jamaica, which is what got him into the scene and soon led to him becoming a real mic fiend in the mid-70s. He record singles for Ossie Hibbert, Manzie Swaby, and Joe Gibbs and then went on to record with Bunny Lee for a series of classic LPs. African Youth was recorded at King Tubby's and mixed by Prince Jammy over some of Lee's tough Aggrovators rhythms. It's a fat and heavy work with crucial mic work.

Review: Two years after Congo Natty announced the jungle revolution on Big Dada, he's back with yet another paradigm shifting selection. Effectively this is a remix album but the artists have been hand-picked to ensure the same consistency and complete finish as the original. Dub maestros old and new lay down some serious twists; Sukh Knight fires up "Get Ready" with bellowing synths, Jinx In Dub adds an obese bulbous digidub version of "Nu Beginningz" while the hugely influential UK pioneer Adrian Sherwood unleashes his inner ragamuffin with the skank-happy junglist "UK Allstars In Dub" shakedown. Another smooth and explorative session, the revolution will be dubwised.

Review: Much loved roots and dub outfit The Congos are often first come to via this seminal album, Heart of the Congos. It's one all collectors have on their racks and that's why it keeps on getting reissued. It's a brilliantly organic and authentic sound with the opening tune 'Fisherman' amongst the best - the falsetto vocals, the lush harmonies, the rolling rhythms - they are irresistible on a warm day. The rest of the record remains just as high on quality, with, of course, the brilliant drums and congas at the heart of each track, but the lyrical work not far behind.

Review: For the label's latest essential two-disc trawl through the archives of Jamaican music culture, Doctor Bird has decided to take us back to the late 1970s and the dawn of dancehall - then a kind of harder, more upbeat take on reggae rather than the drum machine-powered rhythmic powerhouse it became. The Volcano Dancehall Albums Collection features a quartet of full-length excursions produced by early dancehall hero Henry 'Junjo' Lawes: Barrington Levy's influential 'Bounty Hunter', 'Weh Dem a Go Do' by young deejay/toaster Cocoa Tea, and a pair of sets by fellow patois proto-rapper Charlie Chaplin ('Sound System' and the superb 'Dancehall Rockers'). Throw in a handful of essential bonus cuts (including the full 12" version of Barrington Levy's take on Horace Andy favourite 'Skylarking') and you have an indispensable collection of formative dancehall classics.

Review: The Ska Flames are a Japanese traditional ska band from Tokyo with many great albums to their name. Each of them is as authentic as you can imagine and along the way there have been plenty of big singles. It is two such tunes, 'Wadatsumi' and 'Uncyaba,' that now get remixes by Mighty Massa in various different ways on this special, limited edition 12". The first Mighty Massa remix is full of longing trumpets and earthy, rumbling drums. The stepper dub sharpens up the drums and layers in tons of noodle-twisting sci-fi effects and filters and then on the flip comes a mid tempo version of 'Wadatsumi' full of vocal wails and rock licks and then another super stepper dub for the heads.
