Down In The Basement Vol 4
Abramo & Nestor - "Dig It!" (2:28)
Floyd James & The GTs - "Work That Thang" (2:50)
Curtis Baker & The Bravehearts - "Fried Fish ’n’ Collard Greens" (2:40)
The Native Yinzer - "The Hip Strip" (2:33)
Review: The fourth edition in Original Gravity's Down In The Basement series, which gathers instrumental soul and swing cuts onto worthy 7" slabs, resounding the fervent 1960s decadal gap in which mod reigned supreme. With juleps flowing and kneecaps knocking, Abramo & Nestor bring newfangled electric pianistic swing with 'Dig It!', while a twinned "hit it!" injunction is heard from Floyd James & The GTs on the reissued 'Work That Thang'; James' voice is tubed and speed-delayed to terrific effect, achieving a sprung intonation. Curtis Baker brassifies the bonanza with the lively 'Fried Fish 'n' Collard Greens', while The Native Yinzer's exiting excitation 'The Hip Strip' quilts our ears with a mnemic, down-feathery Hammond-breaks bit.

Don't Break Your Promises (3:11)
Review: This is one of those raw soul sounds that never goes out of fashion, and thankfully neither does it often disappear from availability. It features two r&b classics, the dancefloor-ready 'Last Night' and the soulful 'Don't Break Your Promises', both originally released on the Rainbow label in the UK and a long-time bastion of Aitken's mastery of blending Jamaican and British influences. The opener draws from The Mar-Keys and Georgie Fame, showcasing r&b's imprint on Aitken's style. 'Don't Break Your Promises' is a Milson Luce cover that gained fame in Jamaica before inspiring numerous versions.

Windows Of My Mind (5:09)
Windows Of My Mind (remix) (4:56)
Review: The story of this one revolves around San Diego native Anthony "Antone" Williams. He was one day alone in a studio, messing about with the gear and before he knew he it lay down the haunting rhythm that underpins the tune now presented here by the good folks at Athens of the North. It's a sinister, restless one that got released as a hugely limited 7" on Unity Records with otherworldly soul production and a pained vocal up top. Post punk soul, some call it, and that's a fitting descriptor. A remix appears on the flip but the allure of the original is hard to beat.

Review: The third volume of this series delivers an irresistible blend of funk and 60s-inspired grooves. Side-1 kicks off with a surf-rock-infused funk jam packed with energy and retro vibes. Following that, a swinging 60s sound that combining catchy rhythms and pop sensibilities keeps the momentum going. Side-2 shifts gears a groove-heavy track led by a soulful organ that oozes vintage charm. Closing the collection, there is a gem that features smooth, funk-driven melodies, topped off by a standout sax solo and a subtle British flair. This compilation offers a vibrant mix of styles, perfect for fans of classic funk with a modern twist.

Review: This one got a special Japanese Edition reissue in Spring last year but is such an in-demand delight that now comes other pressing. It finds Betty Black serving up her own sublime cover of Eurythmics' mega hit 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)'. She is a modern-day soul diva who used to vocalise UK garage tunes and now shows another side to her bow. She is backed up by The Family Fortune and adds plenty of 60s sass to the original which as well as including the full vocal version on the A-side, also has a more dubbed-out edit on the B-side.

Close Your Eyes (3:19)
Soul Submarine (3:44)
Review: The Psychedelic Breaks & Beats label isn't hard to get the measure of - they make their MO pretty clear in their name after all. It's a fairly safe bet you won't have heard the kind of obscure wonderments they dust down from the history of funky nuggets on the far out fringes, and so it goes on this opening gambit - a split 7" from Capprells & Soul Brothers Band and The Inner Thumb. The Capprells were a Pittsburgh-based family group who released a string of singles in the 70s, all of which are hard to come by but with 'Close Your Eyes' quite possibly being the pick of the bunch, still carrying a little of that 60s magic and more than deserving of a fresh airing on this release. On the flip we get 'Soul Submarine' by The Inner Thumb, an appropriately deep-diving joint originally released on the Soul Ecstasy soundtrack in 1999.

The Scepters - "Message" (3:50)
Review: The Scepters, formed in 1967 in Paraiso by guitarist Celso Spencer, were a popular Panamanian band known for their energetic performances across military bases and high school dances in the Canal Zone. Alongside Lionel Best and Jose James, they covered Top 40 hits and iconic rock bands like Santana and Jimi Hendrix. They released two 45s, including 'Message,' which debuted at Panama's first National Soul Music Festival in 1971 and features next here to a jam from Conjunto Raza, another project led by Agustin Leiro, this one with rotating musicians. They released a single 45 on Onda Nueva in the mid-70s and it blends Zonian and Panamanian talent with aplomb.

Vivian Copeland - "Chaos (In My Heart)" (2:53)
The Poindexter Brothers - "What I Did In The Streets (I Should Have Done At Home)" (3:17)
Review: Soul Junction's latest release brings together two sought-after heavy soul cuts from the studio of the Poindexter Brothers: their own 1969 heater "What I Did In The Street (I Should Have Done At Home)" - a sweet, Vibraphone-sporting slab of rasping, full-throated, horn-heavy sixties soul just dripping with emotion - and a killer cut they produced a year earlier for singer Vivian Copeland. You'll find that song, "Chaos In My Heart", on the A-side. Originally released on Bell, it's an attractive and additive mid-tempo number in which Copeland's fine vocals come supported by low-register horns, shuffling soul grooves and some suitably heavenly backing vocals.

Good Good Good (instrumental) (3:10)
Review: Michelle David's first UK single 'Yes I Am' was a huge soul hit for the One World Records label back in January. Now she follows it up with another superb single that is so good they named it thrice. 'Good Good Good' is a high speed soul banger with Northern Soul elegance swirling around a tight rhythm section and 60s motifs. The vocal is skill controlled despite the heights it reaches and speed it comes at. Craig Charles has already been dropping this one, and for those who prefer it more straight up, the flip side has an instrumental version.

Eat Lights Become Lights - "Habitat '67"
Twelve - "Queen Of Maybe"
Twelve - "Knights Of The Green Shields"
Review: Bringing together an interesting combination for a split disc release, Deep Distance continues its foray into the more exuberant end of post rock with the adventurous, krautrock inspired tones of Eat Lights Become Lights and Twelve. The former sets adrift on an endless bed of violin strikes and shapeless synth flurries, working reverb and delay to perfect effect for an experience both otherworldly and surprisingly grounded in the same instance. Twelve, better known as Six By Seven vocalist Chris Olley, heads in a more rhythmic direction with an astute homage to motorik sensibilities, especially on the optimistic thrum of "Knights Of The Green Shields".

Review: Deep into his chamber-lurking follow-up Wu odyssey, Leon Michels stumbled upon shy New York twosome The Shacks and convinced them to record this hazy summer-primed 45". Singer Shannon steals the show with softness and honesty as the band weave a psychedelic bed of sliding guitars and faraway harmonies. Both laced with a woozy 60s edge and beautifully playful lyrics, the whole EP sparkles with soul and talent from both The Shacks and Leon's ever-reliable troupe.

Ray Ellis is most famed for his work on film and with Billy Holiday but here he's composed a superb blues-based jam with ardent muted horns and some of the funkiest organ action you'll hear all week. Meanwhile on the B we find The Sheiks delivering a dusty slab of horn based rock n'rolla complete with a big swing and major calls to dancefloor action. Sheik, rattle and roll, baby!

Review: New York's Felte label is famed around our parts for knowing how to put together a collaborative EP, but this latest joining of forces from the Flaamingos and The KVB is simply right on the money! The former are a household band who have appeared repeatedly on the label, an outfit who share a post-punk sensibility, while the latter are a Berlin-based duo who indulge in dark and brooding club music that's strangely free of any genre tags. The A-side features three tracks from the band, where the wonderful "Naomi" steals the limelight thanks to its melancholic mood and driving percussive beats, while the flip contains three slabs of moodier, vocal-filtered electronica; our pick has to be "Still Warm" for its early eighties Mancunian edge. Deep and mesmerising!

Velo
Review: It's the tag team to end all tag teams... Friendly Fires and the Asphodells pairing of Andrew Weatherall and Timothy J Fairplay have combined with one simple mission: make music that take both parties out of their familiar pastures. The result is this stunning slice of dreamy Balearic indie. "Before Your Eyes" is awash with psychedelic textures, covering Ed Macfarlane's vocals like a cosy 50 tog duvet. "Velo", meanwhile, is a nagging instrumental that drives with a mathematical magic yet steers with a dreamy, surf rock mentality. The debut on Macfarlane's Telophase imprint, everything about this 12" is special. Let's hope there's more from this premiership tag team in the near future.

Review: Billy Gee & Whole Shabang's 'I'll Stop At Nothing' originally came on the Perfect Toy label back in May 2019, before we had ever heard of the word 'covid.' Mad huh. Anyway, it now gets pressed up to this tidy 7" and cannot fail to get you in a spin. The driving four four dumps and backed by supersized horns and impassioned male vocals with more than a little fancy flutter in the delivery. On the flip is something quite different - 'Not My Boy' lows right down and sinks into a more intimate American-slash-western sound with noodling horns and bass.

Review:  J-Walk is back after the success of his recent long player Meditteranea Winds. The time the beat maker once again shows off his more than solid production credentials with a mega limited edition cut with outer space jazz vibes. It has soft same drums and lush cosmic chords that sink you in deep. Review: Soul Flip are the label completely upending our idea of what 'edits' are. Rather than putting 4x4 kicks on disco classics or reinventing funk instrumentals from the ground up, take this treatment of The Jam: 'A Solid Bond In Your Heart' gets a nice glassy flip-up, with sunny rhythm guitar and handclaps backending a song we never knew had the potential to become soul music in the first place. 'Agora E Moda' from Lee's 1978 album Babilonia is a psychedelic disco-boogie groove highlighted by squelching guitar licks, funk drums, and cosmic vocals. Rita Lee, the former lead singer of Os Mutantes and a key figure in the Tropicalia movement, left a lasting legacy upon her passing in 2023. On the flip side, Dunaway's 'Supermarket' is a rare groove/AOR gem with a standout bassline, swaggering guitar, and lush strings, showcasing his talent as a composer and multi-instrumentalist. This release celebrates the enduring influence of Brazilian music.

Review: 'Beat Me Till I'm Blue' is a wonderfully funky classic by The Mohawks presented under the M Hawk alias, the Hawk in question being none other than KPM Music Library overlord Alan Hawkshaw, who wrote the themes from everything from Grange Hill to Countdown. It was a real cornerstone of the late-1960s library and soul-infused grooves of the sort that diggers still fawn over today, and sample fiends still search out. The track delivers Hawkshaw's distinctively driving Hammond organ riffs, tight drum breaks and irresistible rhythms, all of which have made it a favourite among DJs for decades. Two versions are served up here, one with the iconic horns and one with them stripped away, and both offer plenty of energy. .

It is an empowering tune with some hugely impressive drumming, plenty of big horns and a big bongo bridge that builds the vibe. Review: To complement Dark Was The Night, the latest excellent commercial mix of Optimo's storied discography, Mule Musiq have pulled four considered highlights from the CD for this 12" sampler. Listening to the four tracks featured here in isolation from Dark Was The Night only magnifies what accomplished DJs JD Twitch and JG Wilkes are, and highlights their digging skills with the period in which the music originally surfaced covering the late seventies and very early 90s. "I Won't Hurt You" from QX-1 is sleazy, suggestive deep house from the early 90s that will appeal to fans of same era K Alexi Shelby, whilst "Psychodalek Nightmares" is a killer new wave from The Freeze. Odori's "Number One" is super rare deep house from '91 with a killer S&M drum snap and a surfeit of new age samples whilst "Dream Baby Dream" from Angel Corpus Christi has last track written indelibly into it's DNA - no surprise then that it closes the mix!

Sonic Youth - "Personality Crisis" (3:42)
The Pastels - "Lonely Planet Boy" (4:15)
Review: RECOMMENDED
While New York Dolls are widely considered one of the earliest names on the Big Apple punk scene, revisiting tracks like 'Personality Crisis' proves just how much change took place between 1973 and the later years in the decade. The original version is rooted in a traditional barroom rock 'n' roll aesthetic which, at the time, would definitely not have sounded so traditional.

Breaking from this, dons of wall-of-sound stuff Sonic Youth opted for a lo-fi garage-y interpretation that successfully breathed new life into the song when this interpretation landed in 1993. Flip it to find 'Lonely Planet Boy', which back in the 70s was a piano and guitar workout defined by a somewhat laidback vocal delivery. A wonderful contrast to the A, in 1987 The Pastels offered up a much bigger take on said track that still retained the original's air of cool. Proof, if it were needed, that great music evolves in the right hands.

Review: We love Talking Drums. At the core, they are simply our type of band. An album, a few EPs, and then disappear before the scene kicks off and becomes commercialized. Boxes all well and truly ticked. The early 80s were a period of change what with punk music evolving into post-punk, and while the nu-romantic fashion that came to prominence in the mid 80s was a national movement, it was bands like Talking Drums which initiated it. Thanks to the ever-reliable Dark Entries, we now get to enjoy their best single, Courage, in all its glory - and it sounds like it's been pressed up properly, too! All you need to know at this point, if you haven't come across this already, is that it's one of the best disco-not-disco singles you'll ever cop...and we don't have a favourite tune...they're all equally raw, drum-heavy, house-envisioning, and utterly addictive. Elephant (Todd Rundgren remix)
Review: Australian act Tame Impala nailed their hazy, scuzzed out, psychedelic sound so succinctly on debut album Innerspeaker, the worry must be how they look to match or expand on it with the forthcoming new set Lonerism. On the basis of lead track "Elephant", their sound's development seems subtle in places and epic in others, with a richer texture at play throughout the stomping, woozy psyche rock groove and a wonderful organ lead deviation midway through which presumably is all the more intoxicating played live. The band have truly excelled in who they elect to rework "Elephant" too, with both old chums Canyons and the iconic Todd Rundgren offering distinct yet complementary revisions. The deliciously named "Woolly Mammoth Extension" from Canyons rewires the grubby analogue undercurrent to a cosmic groove that approaches infinity whilst acquiring near defeaning levels of reverb before dropping into the full vocal. Rundgren meanwhile adopts a more expansive opening before launching into a veritable juggernaut of heavily phased psychedelia that adopts the mantra "it's a journey, man" fully.

The four piece band formed in Tokyo and started making reggae and dub before moving on to jazz, soul, new age and psych-pop. They bring subtle euphoria to what they do as well as catchy grooves and nostalgic melodies as exemplified here on this mature new work that will be lapped up by fans of Khruangbin.

Review: Tamtam is a four-piece band based in Tokyo that warted out playing reggae and dub. However, they slowly evolved their sound and developed into an innovative fusion outfit that draws on diverse influences from jazz, soul and psyche pop to new age and exotica. The wonderful 'Ramble In The Rainbow' is their first outing on US label Peoples Potential Unlimited and shows the richness of their world sound while drawing on Sun Ra, Lee "Scratch" Perry, and Yasuaki Shimizu. It's an escapist dub with Eastern melodies and a great mix of subtle euphoria and authentic nostalgia.

Review: Two years on from their last outing, Tara Clerkin Trio return to World Of Echo for a new EP of distinctive leftfield meanderings somewhere between downtempo, folk, jazz and classic balladry. The Bristol band have been hotly tipped over the past couple of years as they've toured relentlessly and generally moved according to their own logic, and they remain wonderfully unique and hard to pigeon-hole. 'Marble Walls' is a gorgeous slice of sentimental balladry shot through with synth bass, while 'The Turning Ground' finds their delicate guitar lines soaring over buoyant breakbeat and dub siren splashes which call to mind the indie-rave-folk crossover charms of Ultramarine's Every Man And Woman Is A Star.

Blues In The Night (3:13)
Review: A powerful Stax flashback of two tracks from Arkansas soul don Taylor's 1967 debut album Wanted One Soul Singer. As covered by the likes of Lou Rawls, "Ain't That Loving You" is heartfelt bluesy ballad with a sultry swagger and serious yearning on the choruses while the even rarer "Blues In The Night" closes the B on a super-tight floor-bound riff and gutsy delivery from Taylor. Both bonafide northern soul classics and confirmed rarities with both cuts regularly fetching triple figures, this reissue changes everything. For more reasons than one.

Richard Temple - "That Beatin' Rhythm" (2:16)
Jimmy Conwell - "Cigarette Ashes" (2:12)
Review: These two Mirwood classics are well-known and well-loved so don't need much hype, but having both tracks on the same 45 is a true treat. 'That Beatin' Rhythm' epitomises the Northern Soul dance scene and is still drawing dancers to the floor all these years on. The instrumental flip is credited to the singer of the A-side and was also hugely popular back in the day but has received less attention in recent years with the vocal version dominating DJ spins. This pairing is a potent one that still very much gets us up and going.

Review: Matching breezy, Bossa nova-tinged sophistication with softly spiralling psychedelia, Testbild! arrive in the Quindi lounge as though they've always been there. Bed Stilt is their latest, anagrammatic album, on which the Swedish collective cast their minds back over their entire careers, all the way back to the earliest days of their 25-year trip through sweetly mysterious pop-not-pop, rendered in warm tones and shot through with surrealism. At once nostalgic for the sleepy neo-psych rock realisations of 90s Malmo - yet also unconsciously nodding to the potents of an incarnation of the sound yet to come - the likes of 'And Her Eyes Are Red', through to the farmyard dream scenario of 'Soft Winged & Frail' and finally absurd bemusement 'Water On The Moon', meet us with an unconscious flight of fancy, teeming with psychic quirks and happily irresolute instrumental combinations, from banjo to Mellotron Mikro to vibraphonette.

Frozen Clouds (3:32)
Review: THE THE's eagerly awaited Ensoulment marks their first studio album since 2000's NakedSelf. This 12-track collection traverses sharp social commentary and personal introspection, something the band has always excelled at through the years. To celebrate the release, a strictly limited 7" vinyl single will feature 'Some Days I Drink My Coffee By The Grave Of William Blake,' a standout track from the album. The single also includes an exclusive B-side, a previously unreleased track, making it great for collectors wanting a unique piece of their discography. With Ensoulment, THE THE delivers a potent mix of incisive lyrics and introspective musings, reinforcing their legacy with a fresh yet timeless edge. While, like most of mainstream media missing this amazing band as usual, true tastemakers know the legendary career Matt Johnson has had. His impact is immeasurable.

Don't Call Me Baby (4:21)
Take A Chance (3:52)
Review: Thee Sinseers excel at expressing the complexities of love through their engaging melodies. The band, rooted in East Los Angeles, has made a name for themselves in the Chicano soul scene, led by QuiNones. The lineup also features talented musicians such as Eric Johnson on tenor sax and Jose Luis Jimenez on trombone, all contributing to a rich tapestry of influences, from 1960s rocksteady to the vibrant spirit of Ritchie Valens and Ray Charles. 'Can't Call My Baby' leads the way as one of the strongest tracks taken from their debut full length album highlighted on this 7". On Side-2 introduces 'Take A Chance', a brand new and previously unreleased track. Here, Joey Quinones shines with his distinctive crooning, urging listeners to seize the moment and embrace love before it's too late. The inclusion of a soulful harmonica adds a lively flair, beautifully blending elements of classic Motown with Latin soul influences. Together, these songs highlight Thee Sinseers' distinctive sound and artistic versatility, merging nostalgic elements with a modern twist.

Review: The Sinseers' 'For You' is the quintessential soundtrack to Southern California vibes. From the opening notes that evoke images of beautiful beach strands under the sun to the heartfelt chorus, the song transports listeners to another world. Led by Joey Quinones, a true son of East Los Angeles, Thee Sinseers defy categorisation as mere oldies players. Over the past five years, they've honed their craft, infusing r&b and soul with a modern twist. With 'For You,' they deliver a timeless blend of music that captures the essence of a bygone era while remaining fresh and relevant in today's scene.

Springtime

Jimmy Thomas - "Springtime" (2:37)
Owen Grey - "I Am Satisfied" (2:31)
Review: Should you be able to find original copies of the two dusty-fingered classics featured on this "45", your bank balance was be significantly smaller. Of course, just because something is rare and expensive doesn't make it good, but Jimmy Thomas's 1969 cut 'Springtime' is genuinely brilliant. Released when funk-rock was arguably at its height, it sees the legendary soul man belting out Alan de Roches' lyrics over a Hammond-heavy fusion of soul, funk and Hendrix-style heavy rock. This time round, it comes backed with a relatively hard to find - on vinyl, at least- chunk of reggae/soul/rhythm & blues from iconic Jamaican singer Owen Grey. It's superb, of course, but we still prefer the incendiary A-side.

Review: Following previous outings for Los Angeles-based imprint ESP Institute such as 2016's Jaguar Mirror and 2017's Night School Of Universal Wisdom, Swedish multi-instrumentalist Oscar "Thunder" Tillman and his 'personal shaman' Pontus make the kind of music you only hear in your most vivid dreams. Incorporating kraut, prog-rock, ambient and disco at the heart of their boundless sound creations, they complete an illustrious trilogy here on their most expansive work to date. "Condor Sunflower" is a truly mesmerising psychedelic folk journey in convincing '70s fashion. On the B side, things take a more upbeat direction on the tripped-out disco funk of "Creation Discotheque".

Reg Tilsley - "Warlock" (3:19)
Roger Jackson - "Flashpoint" (2:33)
Review: 'Warlock' is the latest release to be pushed via Bob Stanley's Measured Mile imprint, and pulls two floor-friendly but still retrospective gems from the storied De Wolfe music library, based in the UK and widely known as the progenitor and originator of what has now become known widely as library music. To demonstrate the gestation times common to this corner of the music industry, these two tracks have never been heard before, and yet were recorded in 1983! First comes Reg Tilsley with 'Warlock', a full yet light-winged flight through linns of flute, funk bass and notes inegales. Meanwhile, 'Flashpoint' by Roger Jackson is a space-age tittup of booming, long-tailed proportions; it's tempered by the nagging nip of a clavichord and the formidable frown of the lowest piano note.

See My Girls (Le Chien version) (5:34)
Review: If Tindersticks' album, "No Treasure But Hope", represents the band embracing all their chamber pop sensibilities, delivering something that has plenty of operatic beauty and camp accessibility, "See My Girl", an EP which owes its title track to that LP, is something of a counterweight. Sort of.

Aside from the one piece taken from said record, here we're given something that's far more expansive and much less interested in genre lines. "A Street Walker's Carol" could well soundtrack some 1970s New Hollywood road movie. The aptly-titled "Blood & Bone", featuring Sidonie Osborne-Staples, invokes the most distorted of electro-rock tomes. Le Chien's re-rub of the titular adds pop-roots-reggae nuances into the equation. Consider this a curveball warning if "No Treasure", their 11th studio album, was your first experience of this incredibly fluid and varied band.

Included is an unreleased vinyl mix of Costin's psychedelic folk balearic cut 'Disconnected' from 2015 on the first side. Being close friends with Costin, Shrinkwrap decided to collaborate and remix the track 'Gain On Gains' over on the flip, from Torn Sail's 2017 long player This Short Sweet Life, with a dub mix also included. Birds (Tiago remix) (10:08)
Review: Claremont 56 continue to disregard the genre boundaries - preferring instead to give good music the attention it deserves - as their latest looker of a twelve inch presents us the sounds of Torn Sail. Fronted by Smith & Mudd vocalist Huw Costin, Torn Sail go all 60s West Coast rock on us with the gloriously rich sounds of "Birds". From its acoustic beginnings the track gradually unfurls into a delightful groove embellished by soothing vocal harmonies. It's almost a thankless task enlisting anyone to try and remix what sounds like a perfect song, but Claremont 56 obviously chose right in requesting the services of Tiago. In the Portuguese producer's hands "Birds" is transformed into a heavily psychedelic freakout which gently develops into a kraut rock behemoth filled with swathes of heavy organ vibes. Containing several shifts in momentum - including a glorious half speed finish - this is a truly stunning remix which left our jaws occupying the floor!
