Review: Yorkshire band The Wedding Present have announced their new project is about serving up one new 7" single every moth in 2022 - echoing the year of 1992 when they did precisely the same. It's a bold plan, especially with the current global supply chain and delivery issues and rumours we hear of all vinyl pressing plants behind backed up for months, but good on them for trying. It is something that has been in their mind since the 90s when the bands bass player used to get singles via subscription from Sub Pop Singles Club. It is called 24 Songs and sees David Gedge writing with the Sleeper guitarist Jon Stewart for the first time and the results are a perfect union, frankly.

Review: To the uninitiated, 'We Should Be Together' could easily lead you down the wrong garden path when it comes to what to expect from The Wedding Present. One of the UK's best-loved and most longstanding indie outfits, forming in 1985, this A-B single outing kicks off with the title number and it's very, very nice. Perhaps a little too nice, in almost every way.
The twangy guitars, male-female vocal duet, words perfectly judged to speak directly to where are hearts were when the track was unveiled: deep in the heart of a corona-riddled 2020-21 winter. Of course, anyone familiar with the band will know they tend to do things a little darker, or at least a bit edgier. And that's exactly what we get on the flip, 'Don't Give Up Without A Fight'. Driving drums, rolling, garage-y guitar rhythm, hints of kraut and post-punk just audible on the distant aural horizon.

Review: Originally formed in the mid 80s, The Wedding Present went on to be an enduring presence in the UK indie firmament, and so it remains nearly 40 years later. This year they've been issuing a string of limited 7" singles which have got their dedicated legions of fans all hot under the collar, and it doesn't let up as we reach the twilight of 2022. 'Science Fiction' and 'Plot Twist' are both perfect demonstrations of the band's perennial appeal, sounding contemporary and classic in equal parts, loaded with a punchy urgency and the kind of sing-a-long hooks that will bury themselves deep in your brain for days on end.
