Cat: R3V 010. Rel: 12 Jan 23
Dimi Angelis - "Myth Maker" (4:56)
Casual Treatment - "Cold Hearted" (4:35)
Michele Mausi - "Drainer" (5:05)
Vohkinne - "Ritual Decay" (5:44)
Muzmin - "Knee Dance" (5:31)
Viktoria - "Kind Like" (6:33)
Review: Rotterdam's [R]3volution label returns this week with the third installment in their H3roes various artist series and this one is loaded with some heavy industrial goods directly off the factory floor. Highlights come from Dutch veteran Dimi Angeles who contributes the seething broken beat hypnotiser 'Myth Maker', Casual Treatment unleashes the intoxicating heads-down warehouse stomper 'Cold Hearted', Melbourne's Craig McWhinney aka Vohkinne goes full steam ahead on peak time cut 'Ritual Decay' and Muzmin goes into mental overdrive on the strobed-out 'Knee Dance'.

Jacobworld - "Reviver" (5:05)
Jarrod Yeates - "Sesh Gremlin" (#2) (6:43)
TheLoopmasters - "No Frills" (4:36)
Review: Emerald's 25th outing takes the form of another superb compilation with four artists who have already released on the label and plenty of new names making an equally good impression. ANNE kicks off with the deep, thudding kicks of 'Coral Reefs' complete with lush hits to smooth the groove. There is more weight and intensity to the oversized hi-hats ringlets on Mike Konstantinidis's 'Apocalypse', DJ Plant Texture layers in plenty of gritty and grime to his gritty 'Swingers' and Jarrod Yeates goes for a twisted after-party vibe on his intense and unrelenting 'Sesh Gremlin', with many more highlights besides.

Tones & Echoes
Cat: EGV 002. Rel: 13 Apr 23
Another Channel - "East Slope Dub" (4:35)
Mantsche - "Unknown Dub Story" (feat Bishop) (4:08)
Masis - "Mount Zion" (4:12)
Stefan Dubs - "Saudrune Dub" (5:28)
Stacktrace - "Heal" (5:49)
Review: Egregore Collective's second outing is another serious one that brings together five specialists from the world of deep dub music. Another Channel opens and plunges into a cavernous oceanic abyss with 'East Slope Dub' before Mantsche's 'Unknown Dub Story' (feat Bishop) has rippling chords that disappear to an infinite horizon while the paddy drums churn slowly below. There's an authentic dub feel to the endlessly wide open spaces of Masis's 'Mount Zio' and the flip brings more dark but delightful dub from Stefan Dubs and Stacktrace.

Marcel Dettmann - "Forla2" (5:12)
Review: By now you should all know that the MDR imprint is associated with Berlin's finest, Marcel Dettmann After a year of sporadic releases - the dude has probably been busy spinning menacing techno seven nights a week - comes this new double 12", a sort of hello from himself and his tight-knit crew over at Berlin institute of techno Berghain. All the bad boys are here, including Answer Code Request with his very singular brand of techno, The Corner man Anthony Parasole who has now become synonymous with the Berghain sound, Norman Nodge, Milton Bradley aka Alien Rain, and a few lesser known producers such as Lockertmatik and FBK. Big release, cop on sight!

Blue Hour Remixed 1

Axis Motive (Answer Code Request remix) (4:57)
Reference 97 (Marcelus remix) (6:05)
Moments (Steffi remix) (7:33)
Review: After a series of 12" releases of original material, Blue Hour calls on some contemporaries to lay down the truth with Answer Code Request, Marcelus, and Steffi on board to remix. Up first, ACR tears into "Axis Motive", stripping everything back to a big kick drum fuelled by subtle breaks, and a gorgeous storm of pads - proper chimerical. Singular boss Marcelus rewires "Reference 97", and unlike his usually menacing approach, this tune is deep, visceral and full of soul; Berlin house Dj and producer Steffi adds some class and love to "Moments". A wonderful touch, and an altogether full-bodied EP.

Esposito & Nadje - "HBP" (7:46)
Review: Crew love is true love: Beste Freunde 05 is upon us and it's not likely to hang around. Once again it's a whole new collective of like-minded souls together for a fresh expedition. Anil Aras leads the mission with a rippling Detroitian understated number simply called "Track 1". He's flanked by Paolo Rocco and Moises. The former ups the temperature and gets us in a lather with the insistent pace of "Ill" while the latter sooths our souls and oils our joints with the slippery hypnosis session "Easy Beauty". Finally Esposito & Nadje run point with the heaviest tool of the trip - the bubbling technoid "HBP". Friends till the end!

Review: The ever-dependable vinyl arm of the Dutch deep techno stable Field Records continues apace into its eighth outing with four carefully selected inner space travellers perfectly suited to the hazy end of the party. Artefakt kicks off with a brooding jaunt through interlocking 4/4 grooves and luscious Detroit pads, while Mark Du Mosch opts for a more punishing tone to his fuzzed out techno. Steffi locks in for a smooth and focused bath of deep house, while Area Forty One switches things up with a refined and textured take on electronica propelled by a prominent broken beat.

AS Groove - "On Pause" (5:57)

Monile - "Transition" (6:59)
Nikol - "Seismic" (6:05)
Review: The only known diplomatic dance musical dialogue between Leeds and Barcelona can be found in the cross-national collective MASS, whose principal aim is to connect the two cities as identified hubs of the next-gen dance musical underground. Here the personae grata in question are a crack team of trusted delegates, known by the respective codenames AS Groove, Driahn, Monile and Nikon; each artist-negotiator delivers their own firebrand sonic missive in quick, electrific unison, appeasing the collective ear through a four-point transmissive treaty. Either breaks-laden or bleep-laden sound is stipulated depending on which fine-print line you read and/or which finely-etched groove you play; only track four, 'Seismic', trigger the break(beats) clause.

Morphing Territories - "Black Pearls" (6:56)
Review: On Board Music is back with a fifth Various Artists EP that explores the outer edges of the techno universe. Prolific, ambient, techno and drum & bass don ASC kicks off with a weighty collaboration with Semblance. Their 'Impulse' is a dubby, bubbly rhythmic roller then Nuversion ups the dub for his atmospheric and heady cut 'Impression.' On the B-side, Polygonia's deft melodic touch is on show with the loopy and beautiful 'Veluo' and then Morphing Territories shuts down with the late night backroom sounds of 'Black Pearls'. This is another heady and well rounded EP from the ever excellent On Board.

Ruf Dug - "Manctalo Banger" (5:31)
Mehmet Aslan - "Shizowaves" (5:57)
Review: Inspired by the late, great Andrew Weatherall - whom they represented for many years - the Spun Out DJ agency has decided to release a swathe of compilation style EPs showcasing the work of some of their artists. Fittingly, this first volume in the series begins with something Weatherall-related: a deliciously trippy and psychedelic remix of a track by the Ashpodells (AKA Lord Sabre himself and Timothy J Fairplay) from long-time DJ buddy Sean Johnston as Hardway Brothers. It's followed by another raw, razor-sharp chunk of chugging electronic wonkiness from Aukratic ('Sleepover'), a gorgeously colourful Italo-disco bubbler from Ruf Dug ('Manctalo Banger') and a low-slung, post-punk-inspired dancefloor workout from James Savage and Optimo's Johnnie Wilkes and Naum Gabo.

Astralure - "Freq" (6:14)
Mike Nolan - "Steady" (6:34)
Silver Ash - "Blackwood" (7:52)
Noosa Sound System - "Ah Go Build" (6:05)
Review: This compilation dives deep into the Australian dub techno scene, a hotbed of producers crafting immersive rhythms and cavernous soundscapes. It's a captivating journey, showcasing four artists pushing the boundaries of dub techno. Astralure's 'Freq' sets the tone with infectious grooves and expertly crafted delays, recalling the dubby excursions of Basic Channel. Mike Nolan's 'Steady' takes a more atmospheric approach, its dreamy pads and sweeping textures evoking the vastness of the Australian outback. Silver Ash's 'Blackwood' adds a touch of darkness, its evolving grooves and relentless bassline weaving a mesmerising tapestry of sound. Noosa Sound System's 'Ah Go Build' closes the compilation with a dubby stomper, its deep drones and echoing vocals layered over massive drums, like a tribal ritual echoing through a hidden valley.

Review: Primary Colours Music shines a light on the Australian dub techno scene with the dynamic two-part release, Antipodean Dubs. Volume A showcases Melbourne's Astralure and their infectious groove 'Freq' with robust kicks, deep basslines and expertly delayed stabs. Fellow Melbourne artist Mike Nolan follows with 'Steady', a dub-infused journey of low-slung beats, dreamy pads and sweeping textures. Coastal talent Silver Ash returns with 'Blackwood' and blends intricate effects, evolving grooves and relentless bass programming. Closing the volume is Noosa Sound System, whose 'Ah Go Build' delivers hypnotic vocals, druggy grooves and deep stabs over massive drums for a true dub stomper.

Review: Ralph Lawsons'20/20 Vision label has done a fine job of evolving and re-emerging after its 20th anniversary and is now serving up cutting edge sounds from fresh new artists once more. It has done plenty of good work in the world of electro recently but here it goes back to deep house from a fine rabble of artists. There is a slick bump n funk to the opener before warped cosmic tones and neon colours define the speedy deep techno of Harrison BDP's 'Dirty Mochyn.' On the flip are some more of those breezy Adam Pits beats and Keisuke's 'OK Taiko' then brings an early, percussive house vibe that takes us back to late 80s Chicago.

Footprints (7:31)
Mars Garden (4:15)
Review: The second of three Borderland album samplers features the tracks "Footprints" and "Mars Garden", songs that middle the forthcoming album. "Footprints" delivers exactly what you would expect from a dubby German audiophile and Detroit techno mastermind; rugged, yet finely tuned drums and bleeps that delicately sway in a downtempo ambience of engineered synthesis. On a minimal and trippy tip, "Mars Garden" aligns to a rigid four-four groove, with a funky - and subtly overdriven - bass line, that gives the track a vibrant sign of life, in a pleasantly isolated and jazz-kissed arrangement.

Review: Detroit godfather Juan Atkins and Berlin techno legend Moritz Von Oswald return as Borderland, one of several collaborations since 1992 and following up their 2016 album for Tresor: the Transport LP which again consolidated both respective artist's solid studio experience, honed over the last 30 years. The funky, slightly bumpin' and absolutely addictive hi-tech soul of "Concave 1" will have you grooving away on a late night dancefloor in Berlin or beyond with its evocative and life affirming vibes. On the flip "Concave 2" further explores their studio refined sequences on this heady and hypnotic journey full of woozy arpeggios, steely rhythms and dubby bass frequencies.

Riod (version) (8:50)
Review: Some of the less charitable critics out there referred to Juan Atkins and Mortiz Van Oswald's side-project as 'boredomland'. While the pair's debut album under this name was a largely sedate affair, on the evidence of this single, they will be opting for a more engaging approach for the follow-up. It's not hard to hear both producers' influence on "Riod"; Van Oswald's love of layered textures and hollowed out drums comes up against Atkins's vivid melodies and synths from outer space. On the alternate version they venture even farther down the dreamy route, with hypnotic chords guiding the way.

Review: First released on Perception Records in 1991, Atomix's debut single 'STK (Eternal)' offers a musical bridge between the electro-influenced bleep techno sound that emerged from autumn 1988 onwards and the later, breakbeat-driven hardcore rave sound. Here the track returns to vinyl for the first time since, with the producer's brilliant original mix coming accompanied by a previously unreleased slab of thumping techno-trance ('The Wonder of Science (Dangerous Lunatic)', with its fluttering, new age house style lead lines, deep ambient chords and pulsating, acid-flecked groove) and two fresh reworks of 'STK (Eternal)'. Hector Oaks dons the DJKAOS11 guise to deliver a distorted, industrial strength lo-fi techno re-make, while Hardrock Striker and Joe Lewandoswki join forces on a bleep-sporting take that pays tribute to the early days of Italian techno (think Lory D circa 1992).
