Actress - "Bird Matrix" (Kid606 club remix) (10:13)
Actress - "Bird Matrix" (Kid606 dub remix) (8:35)
GNESIS - "Pear" (original mix) (3:17)
Actress - "Bird Matrix" (Simbiosi remix) (6:40)
Review: Germany's K7 have got it on lock-down with this latest 12', a full rework EP of Actress' "Bird Matrix" killer by a pair of dance luminaries. First up is Kid606, a man who has been making 'outsider' music since before the term was ever coined, and one who has been every bit as important to the dance music scene all the more commercial names. Kid606's Club Mix is driving, filled with slithering percussion and led by a gorgeous swarm of aqueous synths and Zelda-like sonics, while the dub version slows things down and muddies the groove up into a heady, meditative bundle of melodies and beats. Simbiosi, on the other hand, goes for the jugular and delivers a heavy, stomping techno retuning of the original - what a blinder! There's also a tune by the mysterious Gnesis, "Pear", which appeared on Actress' own K7 compilation. Ya need!

Ynaktera - "Three Phase"
El Cosmonauta - "7K-OK (A)"
Mariano - "Mysterious Way"
Ghostphace - "Rome Boredom"
Scual - "The Fade Of John Gray"
Review: Stochastic Resonance come through correct with their sixth instalment of the series, this time bringing together the talents of Akamoi, Ynaktera, Cosmonauta, Mariano, Ghostphace and Scual for a proper stirring of the senses on this noisy, drone-laden beat of an EP. Akamoi starts with furious swells on morphing feedback soundscapes, while Ynaktera goes for a pixelated sample workout recalling Pan's Jar Moff. Mariano's "Mysterious Ways" sets the dance tempo, amalgamating a twisted, slightly off beat pattern with bleeps and stabs and "Rome Boredom" by Ghostphace is another special moment - quick, psychotic synths fall into an absolutely terrifying ocean of distortion and satanic noise infusions. What a blinder!

33.10.3402 - "Kanap" (10:07)
Gitchell Moore - "Shanghai Opiaten" (6:07)
Review: "Rooted in zoro-astrianism and inspired by the industrial nightlife of futureless suburbs," Dutch label Common Thread has been making waves since early 2014 with a series of records that go much deeper than the average disco 12. The end of a year brings the onset of a new series with the slightly foreboding title of Knives Replace Air which features some fine contributions from the likes of 33.10.3402., Chinaski, and Mangulica FM. Chinaski leads the way with a fine slab of spectral Italo called "Ghoul School", whilst Belgrade producer Mangulica FM presents "Primitivni Ples", an oddball edit that wouldn't sound out of place on one of those A Few Things with Ivan Smagghe compilations from a few years ago. Best of all however is 33.10.3402's "Kanap," a ten minute trawl through murky, abstract sound and field recordings.

Review: The partnership of Kassem Mosse and Beatrice Dillon; Dillon Wendel is a place for the two respected artists to explore soundscapes, aesthetics and synthesis in pastures aeons away from the dancefloors they're most familiar with. Both compositions weighing in over 15 minutes, they're experiences which challenge form and convention; "Pulse" ripples with its namesake, a texture that buzzes and drones in endless waves while "High" mutates a warmer, grainer tone with dizzying effect.

Bowl
Review: The renewed Apollo imprint continues its fast moving release schedule with the debut release from Gacha. Fitting in with the label's cloudy, effervescent aesthetic instantly, "Remember" combines pitched down vocals, dreamy guitars and gentle bass over a half-stepping groove. "Bowl" meanwhile is more obviously aimed at the floor, with a rolling garage rhythm that seems to phase in and out around gentle chords swathed in tape delay.

Oxleas At Night (2:34)
Review: Badman and bad-ass bass producer Gage returns to the Crazylegs stable with six dastardly slices of machine-gun funk, and he's getting faster and nastier every time we hear form him. "Turbulence" is more of a bass-weighted noise tune than a dance banger - and we love it - while "Talon's Reach" contains more of a beat flex in its spine and some killer hardcore rave stabs; "Gruellin" sounds like the inside of an engine that's about to explode, and "Hyphema" is the sort of grime they listen to on Saturn - the cream of the crop in here and a massive tip! "Rochester Way" fires its percussion stabs away amid detuned keys and, lastly, "Oxleas At Night" pushes all boundaries and delivers a ticking time-bomb of a gutter track for the heads. Get to know.

Mysterious Smile Of A Buddhist Image
Mysterious Smile Of A Buddhist Image (Numb remix)
Review: For the uninitiated, Galax was formed in 2005 by Hiroshi Hasegawa and Mandog's Keiichi Miyashita as an outlet to explore the trippiest reaches of extended and improvised electronics and were later joined by Acid Mothers Temple's Hiroyuki Higashi - sort of a Japanese precursor to Magic Mountain High if you will. Galax only ever put out one release, a limited CDr in 2006 called Never Ending Space Trackin' which featured three extended excursions into delay laden noise. One of it's highlights was the 26 minute "Mysterious Smile of a Buddhist Image" which has been licensed by Japanese label Room Full Of Records for this limited 12" reissue that also features a pared down remix from Tokyo based producer Numb which sinks the track into murky, nervous techno territory.

Photon Garden (4:10)
Review: Jagged textures, ghostly tones and frenetic notes are omnipresent on "Filterealism", a highly experimental 9-track odyssey of warbling, jittering, metallic sounds that's quite possibly going to be like nothing you've heard before. Or at least that's the case on "Aluminium Dub", where tribalism meets futurism, or "Kosmaj", which could be read as an exercise in spatial awareness - a series of echoed synth stabs and whirring sounds where gaps say as much as the keys. Elsewhere things are less mind-bending, although only slightly. "All This Is Not A Dream", for example, might be an experiment designed to see what happens when freeform jazz meets feint touches of jungle percussion. "Continental Outcome" chugs without dropping a real beat, "Photon Garden" treads close to a prototype of electro while remaining staunchly eccentric.

Review: Earlier in 2021, UIQ boss Lee Gamble headed back to Kode 9's Hyperdub label to complete his trio of recent albums. First was 2019's In A Paraventral Scale, then came Exhaust in 2020. This final part A Million Pieces Of You was written when "the subjective experience of overload came to a halt, giving way to an overbearing sense of loss, burnout and a desperate need for hope." And there is certainly a sense of tension, dejection and then hope in the fizzing electronics, icy ambience and stark minimalism of this music. Machines meltdown, broken beats collapse and distant synths then draw you in deep as things rebuild.

Review: It's been a little while since Lee Gamble graced us with some fresh abstractions in his otherworldly sound enclave, and so his return to PAN is a thoroughly welcome one. Ahead of a new long player later in the year this EP finds Gamble drifting through plumes of ambient electronica tropes, with "Kali Wave" coming on like a beautiful fusion of breakbeats and dub techno. "Mimas Skank" has a glitchier modus operandi, but not at the expense of some catchy melodic threads and a steady ticking groove. "Girl Drop" however jettisons the beats for a marvelous display of reverb management, which leaves you feeling well practiced in the art of aural disembodiment.

Review: Over the last five years, Lee Gamble has surely solidified his name as top dog among the techno deviants, and each time one of his new releases drops onto our shelves ours ears prick up instantly. Having made a name for himself on PAN, it's now time to curate his own UIQ label, and "004" is exactly the sort of tune to catch the listener's attention: an unsteady techno beat that mangles it way through rough, distorted waters. In the same way, "For Infernomatics" challenges the status quo, and renders the techno experience a much more wide-eyed, wholesome experience that branches off into different territories. On the flip, "Kinematics" develops this 3D techno feel further thanks to the help of a sea of washed-out sonics and brittle beats, while "Cnull" heads towards the genreless, the only thing placing it anywhere near dance music being its jittery, improvisational kick-hi-hat combo. Excellent.

Stones & Minerals (6:34)
Review: The Gardener is a new project from James Booth, a producer best known for his outings on 100% Silk and, most recently, Church. While he's renowned for making DJ-friendly club fodder, this new project has been designed as a vehicle for beautiful, nature-inspired electronic compositions fit for horizontal home listening sessions. He's provided a neat summary of what we can expect over coming months and years via epic A-side "Lilac Moore", a 19-minute journey into gentle drum machine bongos, squinting synthesizers, blossoming ambience and picturesque aural textures. It's rather brilliant, all told. The loved-up, lo-fi pleasantries continue on the flip, where the woozy deep house lullaby "Water Clock" and aural waterfall "Secret Trail" - all gentle arpeggio bass and cascading electronic melodies - stand out.

NUN-1 (4:13)
Review: After the success of his latest album, Inna Babalon, and the first BTEC Version EP, we are pleased to see the second installment of the latter drop on our shelves so quickly. What is special about John T Gast's music, apart from its creativity and an uncanny ability to avoid categorization, is that it sounds so damn relevant today. In a social sphere that's constantly preoccupied with elements of dystopia, the producer's music alleviates some of those tensions by making them a physical reality. The opening "Club Version" is, on first appearance, a placid house tune, but it quickly transforms into its own style of sci-fi thanks to all sort sof subtle sonic infusions at the periphery of the leading sounds. On the flipside, "Jettison II" heads into a spiral of hypnotics thanks to the track's circular use of sounds and what seem to be helicopter recordings, whereas "NUN-1" portrays its own sort of mysticism with shattered percussion and an inherent feeling of gloom and doom... which we are totally bought into. Sick.

Review: A grad student and sound designer at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, Katie Gately has been producing music for a little over a year, but has already managed to forge a unique sound that Public Information describe succinctly as a "prime distillation in computer-music-pop". Gately's self-titled debut sees her combine her own heavily treated vocals amidst an occasionally bewildering array of sample-based scrapes, cracks and drones that somehow shape themselves into an avant-garde form of pop music, manifesting itself as "Fractured vocalisations, bittersweet harmonies, freaked alien voices all living, breathing in deep fried motherboards of acute computer programming and field sound." Although her music finds itself closely aligned to Holly Herndon and Julia Holter, fans of the weird grime of Jam City and the more abstracted output of Editions Mego should consider this a must check too.
