The Advent - "Sonic Storm"
Uncertain - "Reset"
Chontane - "Crate"
Cari Lekebusch & Orion - "Rollback"
Fixon - "Brutal Metaphor"
Mari Mattham & Jessse - "Secca"
Review: Dutch label Illegal Alien is rightly celebrating its last 16 years in existence. It's doing so with a bumper collection of 44 exclusive tracks from 46 of its best artists across an eight-volume vinyl and digital series. The series not only traces the label's evolution, but that of techno itself and this sixth outing once again offers no-nonsense, heady and atmospheric techno that is both physical and inventive. Legendary names old and new like Fixon, The Advent, Cari Lekebusch & Orion and Mari Mattham & Jessse all contribute a range of essential dancefloor weapons.

Silent Servant - "Manic" (4:56)
Unhuman & Vulkanski - "Mescaline Network" (6:05)
Review: Khidi rolls out another anniversary EP here and it is another various artists affair that takes no prisoners. On their opener, Ancient Methods & OTHR bring some hellish metal and industrial overtones to the stomping, vicious 'Vast Vanishing' with its horror-core vocals. Roman & Boyd Chidt don't let up but offer a more linear and streamlined bit of stomping techno pressure. Silent Servant unleashes lashings of metallic synths over his signature tech sounds and then the floating loops of Unhuman & Vulkanski suspend you just above a rusty old factory floor.

Apex - "Echoes" (5:16)
Unknown Error - "The Yearning" (Super VIP mix) (9:24)
Review: It's been seven months now since the death of Rob Dickeson AKA Apex stunned the drum and bass community. "Echoes" is the last known track that Dickeson completed and is being released by Hospital Records in order to raise funds for Help Musicians UK's Music Minds Matter campaign. It's rather good, too, with poignant pianos, stirring strings and melancholic chords floating over a snappy, liquid funk beat. It's accompanied on the flipside by a fantastic, floor-friendly "Super VIP" mix of "Yearning", a soaring 2006 cut Dickeson produced alongside Jim Gash as Unknown Error. Top tracks and a worthy cause: this should be an essential purchase for D&B heads everywhere.

Aquarian Atmosphere - "Floating On Boyne"
39626 - "Elixir Of Life"
Unit 21 - "Clubtraxx" (Movement 1 - unreleased version)
Aquarian Atmosphere - "Rhiannon"
Review: Re:discovery has got a superbly illusive reissue eon its hands here with 1993's Clouds Over Europe EP from Aquarian Atmosphere, 39626 and Unit 2. It is a cosmic deep tendon voyage that tingles all of your sense as you ride on the gloriously serene synths of opener 'White Clouds'. It is one of the three tunes from Aquarian Atmosphere, the others being 'Floating On Boyne' a dreamy downtempo number that leaves you gazing at the stars and also 'Rhiannon', a thinking melodic masterpiece. 39626' 'Elixir Of Life' is an intense mix of synth modulations and minimal rhythm and Unit 21s' 'Clubtraxx' (Movement 1 - unreleased version) is pure Detroit techno goodness.

Controlled Weirdness - "Information Society" (5:38)
Meat Beat Manifesto - "Destroy Dub" (3:50)
Review: The second in the BLE-EP series is another nostalgic trip back to the early days of rave. It's jam packed with six of the best breaks, bleeps and bass tunes, prickly analogue drum programming and future leads that immediately place you in a room full of smoke, lasers flashing by and strobes going mental. Bohm's 'Trouble' is a textbook take on this style, while Neil Landstrumm layers up bright melodies and refracts them around a punchy techno framework on 'Body Popper.' Meat Beat Manifesto's 'Destroy Dub' is a wild furry of drums and another gem on an EP full of them.

Container - "Cauterize" (12:03)
Review: Originally released back in 2011, this split LP from Unicorn Hard On and Container is back on a fresh pressing through the Hot Releases label overseen by Ryan Martin aka Secret Boyfriend. Valerie Martino's superbly-named Unicorn Hard On takes the A-side with the bubblegum outsider house of "Persian Cats" complemented by the jagged and angular beat assault of "Wildfire Girls" which also features her howling and heavily processed vocals. On the flip is fellow analogue noise merchant and all round badass Ren Schofield aka Container whose offering "Cauterize" is business as usual; pounding, rusty and abrasive techno that plays by its own rules and why this guy really does have his own sound.

United Spiritual Singers - "Not A Minute Too Late" (Tom Noble mix) (6:50)
Review: Since 2020, Athens of the North's in-house band, East Coast Love Affair, has been serving up increasingly impressive slabs of retro-futurist brilliance. Previously, they've turned their hand to spacey jazz-funk/house fusion ('Don't Be Afraid'), deep vocal house ('Without You'), disco-funk ('Confrontations') and lovers rock (a superb cover of Eddie Kendricks' 'Date With The Rain'). This time round, they join forces with veteran gospel-soul choir United Spiritual Singers to deliver an incendiary disco-funk cover of the outfit's obscure (and recently reissued) 'A Minute Too Late'. The scorching, club-ready original mix comes accompanied by a superb Tom Noble rework that re-images the track as a Boyd Jarvis/Paul Simpson style proto-house heater full of reverb-laden vocals, echoing drum machine percussion and addictive synth-bass.

Across all eight volumes once they are out there will be a total of 44 exclusive tracks and 46 great artists all tracing the evolution of techno over the last decade and a half. This edition is a superb one that fins plenty of innovation in techno, from the paranoid and warped synth energy of DJ Shufflemaster's 'Bizarre' to the tightly woven and intricate synth layers of Urban Groove's 'Aftertouch' via Unkle Fon's dry, stepped back techno funker 'Violet.'

Umwelt - "Beyond Celestial Limits" (5:54)
Umwelt - "Memory Of Light" (5:03)
Review: You can never have too many hand-stamped white label 12"s if you ask us. The latest crew to start up in simple but effective wax fashion is Lap with this hefty four-tracker. It finds Umwelt and Faerber take up one side each. The latest goes first with the muscular but funky and bass-heavy techno of 'Emotional Text Message Service' before 'Undo Can Do' gets more dark, militant and clipped in its loops. This one has frosted synths and drilling bass making sure you move. Umwelt then layers in more emotive, even trancey, synths over busted broken beats on 'Beyond Celestial Limits' while 'Memory Of Light' is another strobe-lit broken beat techno banger for the peak time.

Review: Dame Music is a sure shot for rough and ready techno with the Midwestern bite, a sense of adventure and enough punch to teach the pretenders a thing or two. Their Melting Point series has been an intermittent treat amongst their catalogue over the years, and Volume 4 does not disappoint. This time around label mainstay Bloody Mary is joined by the likes of Fear E, Dylab, Freddy Fresh and Umwelt for no less than five rip-roaring workouts geared towards the gnarlier kind of techno party.

Hoax Believers - "Short Circuit" (4:30)
Sound Synthesis - "Vertex43" (4:47)
Univac - "H Beat" (6:58)
Review: There is some serious electro talent on this new EP from Fanzine, starting with now US-based, UK-favourite Carl Finlow. His machines are in fine fettle once more as crisp, kicking electro rhythms are overlaid with bright, silvery, pixelated melodic fireworks on the sublime 'Organoiods'. Hoax Believers get more gritty with the sheet metal snares and in-your-face arps of 'Short Circuit' while Sound Synthesis offers something moody and unsettling on their 'Vertex43'. Univac will make your eyes water with the abrasive textures of 'H Beat.'

Review: There's an embarrassment of contemporary house riches to be enjoyed on the second edition of Music Is Love's Lovebox series, with a sizable contingency from the UK stable of deep house troopers. There's soothing funky tones from Mr KS, nifty broken beat delights from Cassio Kohl and Tuccillo, and rough-shod party-starters from U Know The Drill and Jackson Ryland. The diversity across the four sides is pleasing to see, and there's no shortage of fresh ideas from the likes of Liam Geddes with his distinct shuffle on "Untitled" to Oli Furness' off-centre approach to rave tropes in house music.

Gemini - "B Trip" (4:49)
Unit T - "Mystery Tones" (12:56)
Review: ***B-STOCK: Slight surface marks on the record, product in perfect working order***

The most sought-after release from the entire Sounds catalogue, Gemini and Unit T's 1995 release, 'Sideburns', finally gets a much-needed reissue. A1 track, 'Trip', is a prime example of deep house if there ever was one. An infectious, encircling melody meets the deep groove of the bassline to create a finished product that is in equal measure sun-soaked and cosmic. 'B Trip', the A2 track, is a gloriously shifted, off-beat reimagining of A1, pummeling percussion reverberates across the track, left alone to enjoy moments where everything is stripped back, before the body of the track returns. On the B-side, 'Mystery Tones' arrives with the kind of groove that instantly makes its way across dancefloors - a unifying track that feels precise in its simplicity, whilst still retaining exactly the right degree of looseness to get a crowd moving. This is a must-have record for any deep house aficionados, and you can now save yourself the hefty Discogs price tag!

Review: Quirky and lo-fi minimal moods from the Pirka label, successfully blending four tracks from various artists in their repertoire as far-flung as speed garage, deep house, and broken beat. Glitchingly restless come tracks like Hendriks Toth's 'Pescado Y Limon' and Jorge Savoretti & Lulla's 'Zoot', both of which we consider to be highlights thanks to their impressively slick and agile production quality and swing. The tunes by Guy From Downstairs and Unknown Collective are no less beguiling, spanning crossrhythmic pulses to speedy hat-clap hypnotizers.

Billyman - "Work Fi U Dub" (3:54)
Review: You'll find some excellent "versioning" on this offering from Italian imprint Roots Cooperation. It features a quartet of cuts built around the same warm, bubbly, ear-catching and - naturally - sub-heavy digital riddim crafted by producer Rob Gravy. Honey-voiced mic man Anthony Johnson stars on EP opener 'Beholden', offering a slick and soulful delivery of a conscious and thoughtful set of lyrics, before Italian mixer Paco Ten offers up a deliciously weighty and extended dub mix ('Beholdub'). Over on the flip toaster U Brown delivers a deejay style interpretation, rapping in patois atop Rob Gravy's groove, while Billyman reaches for the reverb, echo and tape delay on a ludicrously weighty partner dub.

Review: On celebrating 22 years of Josh Wink's cult acid classic "Sixth Sense" on his legendary Ovum imprint, they've invited one half of Masters At Work, Louie Vega, and Israeli techno hero Shlomi Aber for a set of remarkable updates. Vega looks after the A side with a couple of sweltering reworks: from the bouncy, bass-driven groove attitude of the main remix which retains industry veteran Ursula Rucker's powerful vocal performance, to the handy dub version up next. On the flip, Aber certainly has come a long way since the days of Chicago Days/Detroit Nights - it's about spending all weekend at Berlin's Berghain these days - getting on some proper tunnel vision with his steely and austere rework.

I Hear Music In The Streets (LV Classic Boogie mix) (6:33)
Review: Anyone with even the smallest interest in disco and boogie will have heard Unlimited Touch's 1980 classic 'I Hear Music In The Streets'. It's a stone-cold killer that should be approached with caution. Louie Vega, of course, is respectful, and these versions are not remixes but rather re-makes, with the Masters at Work man being joined in the studio by all manner of guest musicians and vocalists - including original members of Unlimited Touch. The standout version is the near 11-minute A-side 'Touch Mix', an all-live post-disco version rich in classic disco bass, guitars, electric piano keys and spacey chords. The short-ish 'NYC Expansions Dub' cans the vocals and emphasises the various instrument solos, while the 'LV Classic Boogie Mix' is an almost note-for-note remake of the 1980 original.

This follows up some great releases by the likes of Boy Harsher, Scratch Massive and The Hacker in recent times. Berlin's Melania (Aufnahme + Wiedergabe) kicks off proceedings in style, with the brooding body music of "Underage", Grenoble's Crystal Geometry delivers the factory floor sounds of "Hammer On The Flag" (reminiscent of legends Test Department) and label bosses Vanessa Asbert and Nico Cabanas don their Synths Versus Me moniker for some deeply sinister gothic electronics on "The Dubdancer.

Whereas the first one issued almost a year ago drew for some crazy club material from artists closely associated with the label, this second edition seeks out contributions from outside talent. Any record that features contributions from both Optimo Music Golden Teacher and Wolf Muller is going to get our seal of approval and both are highlights. This 12th such offering is a vicious various artist affair that kicks off with the one and only Perc. 'Skinner' rides a wave of serrated bass energy and turbulent synth work that will blow up any club. Like its predecessor, the four-tracker is packed to the rafters with fresh cuts inspired by the colourful, synth-heavy sounds of mid-80s European electro-disco. Senor Chugger then steps up with 'Smell The Ashes', a throbbing slab of Italo-disco revivalism rich in cascading melodies and echo-laden drum fills, before Back From The Wave/Umatik doffs a cap to Bobby Orlando and the Pet Shop Boys on 'Endless Crossing'. This is the first 12" they've put out themselves, but many of the label's core crew were featured on Romanian label Storytellers back in 2020. Review: Universal Cave's Self Control cover is a captivating reinterpretation of Laura Branigan's synth-pop anthem. Stegemann's balearic house rendition infuses the track with a laid-back groove and echoing vocals, creating a hypnotic and alluring atmosphere. Universal Cave's other offerings on this release showcase their eclectic disco influences. 'Up All Night' transports listeners to the funk and groove era of the 1970s, while 'Too Much' tantalises with its disco-tinged sensuality and infectious melody. This EP is a versatile record that should appeal to those who enjoy disco and the innovative spirit of nu-disco.

Teenage Mutants - "Dark Clouds" (feat Heerhorst & Peter Pahn) (5:54)
Umek - "Footmachine" (5:43)
Review: Adam Beyer's Drumcode remains out in front of the pack when it comes to big room techno. Whether going to new school artists or old school legends the results are always the same - epic and explosive. This time out we get both on one EP with Teenage Mutants going first with 'Dark Clouds (feat Heerhorst & Peter Pahn). It has synths fired from a hadron collider as they shoot over the face of the acid and bass-laced drums. On the flip side is the mighty Slovakian Umek with 'Footmachine,' a dark and heavy banger with flat-footed drums and all sorts of cosmic synth turbulence. Potent stuff for sure.

Review: Paris-based DJ and producer U R Trax is a globetrotting spinner and music maker for the likes of Body To Body, Kaos and Lobster Theremin. The six track 'Third Ear' EP is, nevertheless, a step up of sorts as it's her debut EP for Nina Kraviz's Trip label, following a single contribution to the label's Psy-trance collection. It also gives her a chance to present a spread of styles and flex her versatility. Among the highlights are the deep, vocoder-enhanced voices behind the tough-edged 'High Heels Long Legs', and the speedy, breakbeat-peppered 'I Can't Believe (You're Real)', but if you appreciate your techno stark, powerful and hypnotic, you'll enjoy it all.

Review: U2 are back with a brand new single, the single-sided record edition of 'Atomic City', produced by Jacknife Lee and Steve Lillywhite. Pre-empting the band's upcoming residency at Sphere in Las Vegas - a venue fit for the band's stature - the track is a hip-shaking, knee-slapping call into the unknown, hearing lead singer and public favourite Bono singing of lamented lost futures and calls for the city of Las Vegas to reckon with itself, referencing its status as a hotbed of 1950s nuclear tourism. This limited edition vinyl copy comes on alabaster transparent 7" vinyl, and the B-side features an exclusive etching.

Review: Has it really been 40 years since we saw Bono clad in a black sleeveless tee and brown waistcoat, mullet-topped and leading his band of equally early-80s looking musos to the rooftop of a Dublin building to perform one of their finest songs? Well, based on this limited edition release, the answer is clearly 'yes'.

Originally unveiled in 1971, 'Gloria' is a powerhouse single if ever there was one, and a track that marries melody, message, and the atmosphere U2 are best known for. It's a track that soars over those rooftops, The Edge's riffs acting as wings while Bono cries heartfelt rallying calls atop the lot. Unashamed, unabashed, and unapologetic (check the verse in Latin), now you get four different versions, three from the band in their natural habitat (i.e. live on stage), and the original.

Review: The 'Knights Of Utopia' is a stunning showcase of deep house music by UC Beatz, a Brussels based DJ, producer and label owner. The EP consists of four tracks that blend soulful vocals, jazzy keys, funky basslines and smooth grooves on Dutch label Four Framed Music. On the A-side is 'Sun Rayz' with its positive and energetic vibe that makes you want to get outside and dance, while by contrast 'Ups & Downs' is a deeper and darker track with a hypnotic synth melody and a driving drum beat. On the flip, 'Jack Is A G' is a tribute to Jackmaster; this funky and playful track respectfully pays homage to the classic house sound.

Review: Frole Records' occasional offshoot Save The Groove returns for the first time in 2023, this time with a label debut from Entrepot Records chief UC Beatz. The Brussels-based producer is at his very best on title track 'Gateway To Ponza', a future eyes-closed deep house classic in which loved-up pads, sustained chords and lilting lead lines rise above a squelchy synthesiser bassline and a bespoke beat that's as tough as it is crunchy. Trinidadian Deep's accompanying remix is naturally luscious, too, with plenty of glassy-eyed musical touches, twinkling pianos and even more South American-influenced additional percussion. Elsewhere, 'Fayum Oasis' is a sweaty jack-track marked out by a frankly filthy (and mind-mangling) bassline, while 'A Pillow For Two' is a sunrise-ready chunk of warming deep house loveliness.

Now though, he's been picked up by Razor-N-Tape for a classy trip through hardware house music. From the cool-strutting, Tevo Howard nodding "Blue Ciel" to the Alton Miller-esque "Broken Idyll", this is deep house done properly. Also check the Cody Currie remix of "Blue Ciel", which gets things a little more bumping while keeping the soul turned up high.

Review: The Kimochi label has been steadily releasing quality output over the last four years and they've been responsible for introducing us to a pool of new talent from the ambient corners. This latest beautifully presented 12" comes in their usual house style and comes from UD, an unknown artist who has already released one EP for the label last year. "Muy Casera" starts things off with colourful minimalism thanks to its glitchy sonics, while "Meticulous" breaks the groove and takes the beeps to an irregular tempo. "After The Cremation" is looser and more heavily focussed on cinematic pads, whereas "Pankow" takes subtle bursts of noise and places them above grey-scaled low frequencies. There's some special appearances on the B-side in the form of two remixes by Leipzig's Mix Mup and Sued's SW: the former gives his own version of "NFL CC DUB", a slow and chuggy beat burning below mild pads, whereas the latter interpretation of "Dewy" contains that classic SUED sound, a bag of rickety percussion and rich soundscapes. Don't miss it, gone before you know it.

Review: Mystery production unit UD returns to Kimochi, one of the more overlooked imprints of the last few years, with four new cuts and a rather fine selection of remixers to boot! The mood is pensive and the sounds are atmospheric throughout, where tracks like "Lollipop Robot" or "Adapter" stand somewhere between ambient and electro-acoustic. The remixes give the tracks slightly more dancefloor weight, and both Area Green Grass and label regular Skookum contribute with a set of pretty killer reinterpretations a-la outsider house, but the silent killer is most certainly SW's remix of "Pankow". The SUED records co-owner fixes up a wonderfully bizarre concoction of sounds and shapes, moulding them into a dubby, sparse and cinematic twister. Another fine slice of Kimochi, beautiful artwork and all.

This one is titled the Horazie EP and features the sunset breaks of 'Vera Smile', before the emotive hi-tech soul of 'Karma Has No Deadline', right through to the sublime and melodic affair that is 'El Cortijo De Severiano' that's perfect for those upcoming summer vibes. Four cuts of chaotic choppy-choppage and Amen splinters, this represents everything that's exciting about modern jungle right now. 'Level Up' and 'Big Up All' are all about the bashy bumps and shunts, 'Operation Drag N Drop' is a lot more nostalgic with its jazzier drums and emotional pads while 'Feed The Cat' tickles the whiskers with big drums and a mystical charm. Impeccable work, our advice is to identify this flying object as soon as you can!

Engineered specifically to slap off classic Klipsch systems, the pair deliver three cuts of pulsating, warm leftfield house. 'UGNG3' is a splashy, euphoric Dinosaur L-esque disco house plodder, 'UGNG4.1' a more orthodox jacker replete with loose congas, clouds of hazy pad, and timeless d floor invocations, and the closer 'UGNG4.2' a cruise control roller calling to mind Larry Heard's early 00s bliss-outs. Top notch.

Review: Ultradyne has been called a 'fundamentalist' techno artist, and while this is a term we've hardly come across to describe much techno before, we think we get the gist with this new release, Nativist. The five-tracks on this banger-filled 12" tend towards the novelty moods of early electro, with 'Native Serenade' emitting all manner of window-wiping, slippery acid sounds, and the bleepific 'What We Must Do For Chaos' creeping into superfast hardcore. Themes of nationhood and 'protecting the realm' are present, speaking to techno's ironic appropriation of militaristic defence themes.

Review: French-Haitian saxophone player Ulysse laid this cult gem down in 1983. After its release, he became an underground sensation within the niche French boogie scene, Both of the tunes which now get reissued manage to successfully mix political statements with dance-floor fire. First up is 'Naima' which is about the resilience of a woman who has grown up in war. On the flip is 'Tiers Monde' which is a much more heavy digital reggae tune that offers a reminder that we must not forget about abandoned children of the Third World. This was big in Paris in the 80s and will be just as big now.

This guy makes synthy, drone-fuelled music like no other and "Temple Room" is a genuine whirlpool of drum-machine oddity and melodic sparseness, whereas Silvio's remix speeds up the tempo, pushes the hyper-space button and fuels its engines for a true pounding of cosmic disco-house. We didn't expect that one, but it's left us with a genuine buzz of excitement. The US imprint does it again...in fine style...

The second track, "Complikator", is a relentless and dramatic backing of severe synths, rising pads and swirling noise. The bass is similarly intense, throbbing away before developing into a melodic break. It's quite a head-turner and will create a buzz in the clubs.

Coming to light as part of this new reissue from Maledetta Discoteca, 'Fried Bananas' is a danceable rarity that appeared as part of a never-released 1975 LP. The Italian jazz musician, most famous also for scoring many film soundtracks, here has one of his most dance-y tracks served up by Four Flies. It features an original version as well as a special edit retouched by Jolly Mare. The original was recorded in 1978 under one of his many other monikers, Rovi, as a way of not over saturating the market with his name at the time. It is a cosmic beats that chimes with the emergence of that sound and still does today.

Review: One of several products of the relationship between Piero Umiliani and film director Luigi Scattini, Angeli Bianchi... Angeli Neli - also known as Witchcraft 70 - exemplifies what was so good about the partnership between filmmaker and film scorer. A mondo movie, which were a specific sub genre of exploitation flicks and documentaries, often made to look like works of non-fiction, while this isn't Cannibal Holocaust, one of the most notorious in the canon, it certainly paints a questionable picture of Brazil's rural communities. Supposedly heading out into small town South America to observe witchcraft, black magic and ritual practices, the soundtrack itself does its best to try and evoke the spirits presented on screen, even when heard separate to the visual narrative. Here in abridged form (the full soundtrack is also available), the two tracks are influenced by Bossa nova and samba, but with so much wilder happening.'Saudade' opens on spectacular vocal-led stuff, before 'Macumba' places voice as secondary to complex and hypnotic drum patterns.

Review: French electro legend Umwelt is back on Shipwrec, a label which last carried his dynamic, widescreen brand of machine funk back in 2016. Collapsar is a five-strong affair which goes heavy on the drama from the off, leading in with the acidic might of 'Galactic Empire' before swerving for the eerie, slamming soundtrack tones of the title track. 'Reflectivity' strikes an emotional note thanks to the interplay between the background pad and the arps out front, while 'Redemption Ark' takes a pause to focus on atmospheric sound design before one final bout of high-intensity training with 'Day Zero'.
