Last One Of The Boys (1:52)
We're Only Monsters (2:16)
Review: Originally formed by Roddy (Radiation) Byers, before his departure to join The Specials, the short-lived legacy of Wild Boys was thanks, in no small part, to younger Byers brother, Mark, who would take over the group throughout their meteoric rise. Receiving heavy rotation on the John Peel show as well as The Radio 1 morning slot, 'We're Only Monsters', was a mammoth banger penned by Roddy, but deemed too extreme for the sugary bop of The Specials, so it was naturally bequeathed to the Wild Boys, while the anthemic A-side, 'Last One Of The Boys', was penned by frontman John Thomson. This 7" is a vital piece of UK/Coventry/punk history, and it's about time it was on easily accessible wax once again.

God Forbid (3:13)
Review: Liverpudlian post-punk band The Wild Swans formed in 1980 and has had a rotating ensemble of members ever since. But in that time they have pioneered a shoegaze and indie sound that has made them cult favourites on and off for years. Despite mainstream chart success eluding then, they are popular as far afield as Japan, the Philippines and the US. 'The Revolutionary Spirit' was their first single in 1982 with the original line up and it received a measure of critical acclaim which is easy to understand even now listening back, all these years later.

Necronomium (5:07)
Review: Following on from the 2019 Southern Lord released, The Enemy: Reality; an album that many regarded as a momentous return to form after 2017's collection, Run With The Hunted; fans were assured that Sweden's top hardcore punk export were back and more bitter than ever. Their latest offering doubles down on this assessment with the visceral new EP, 'Anti-Tank Dogs'. Three tracks, ten minutes and a barrage of buzzsaw riffs and throat-shredding intimidation, is sometimes all it takes to clarify that age doesn't necessarily equate to softening of demeanour or disposition.

Review: Floridian melodic metalcore outfit Wage War have opted to do the unthinkable (with regards to their scene), and dropped an acoustic project, reimagining cuts from all three of their previous full-lengths; 2017's Deadweight, 2019's Pressure, and 2021's 'Manic'. With a title like The Stripped Sessions it should be pretty evident that this isn't the bombastic affair the band's name usually indicates, instead channelling folk influences that expand as far as the surprisingly tender cover of the classic Johnny Cash cut, 'Folsom Prison Blues'. Produced by local fan and friend, A Day To Remember vocalist, Jeremy McKinnon; this is a most curious case of a group delivering from a facet which fans didn't realise they thirsted over.

Review: Glasgow post-punk underdog heroes, The Wake, arguably never achieved nor received the success they were due with their excellent gloomy, shivering early work. Often unfairly compared to Joy Division, which only got worse upon their touring with New Order who were their labelmates at the time; it only feels like now, four decades removed from the release of their seminal debut, 'Harmony', that naysayers have learned to appreciate the work for what a cornerstone of the genre it truly was. The, 'Harmony & Singles', compilation has been reissued on Factory Benelux, then bounced to LTM then right back to Factory again, and here, we arrive at yet another reissue, commemorating a somehow criminally underrated staple of post-punk history, one decade shy of a half-century ago. Post-punk is pushing on...

Review: Originally released in 2004 and celebrating its 20th anniversary, War Is Hell was the debut full-length from Californian hardcore punk upstarts turned underground heroes The Warriors. Drawing on the groovy yet snarling style of Snapcase and Rage Against The Machine, the success of this release would see them added to bills touring with scene legends such as Comeback Kid, Terror, Sick Of It All and Parkway Drive, with vocalist Marshall Lichtenwaldt even guest featuring on the latter's track 'Hollow' from their Don't Close Your Eyes EP and later re-recorded for 2010's Deep Blue. Namedropped by melodic hardcore peers Set Your Goals on the anthemic 'Summer Jam' while their own cut from this record 'Slings & Arrows' would be covered by metallic hardcore giants in the making Knocked Loose on their 2019 Mistakes Like Fractures EP, The Warriors are a hardcore band's hardcore band with this long overdue repress marking the first since 2005 and is limited to only 100 copies.

Review: Ways Away are the latest in an ever-increasing line of hardcore-turned-post-punk supergroups, featuring members of Samiam, Stick to Your Guns, BoySetsFire and The Hope Conspiracy. Last year's seminal self-titled effort finally arrives on wax with a resounding slap of fuzzed out, hazy guitar passages, instantaneous hooks, insightful lyricism and apathetic regard to sonic cohesion. Part ugly/part blissful, these momentous anthems simmer with a restrained snarl indebted to previous projects, kept in check by a desire to push for and pursue more melodic avenues.

Review: The Welders, it is fair to say, had a sound that was well in advance of its time. The all-female punk-pop band from St. Louis was formed in 1975 and started giving just a year later with a raw garage sound before that was even a thing. Despite the impossibly rough climate of those years they managed to make their mark on a local photographer and newspaper owner who paid for an EP recording session in 1979. The band carried on for a few years later but didn't record much more. This EP collects together studio, rehearsal and live recordings as well as the tunes off that first release.

Review: Short-lived So Cal band Wheezing Maniac will bring back many nostalgic memories for those old enough to have been wooed by seminal skateboarding video H-Street's Hokus Pokus. Two of its most iconic tunes were by this outfit - 'Dollar on a Platter' and 'Don't Come Close' and both showcase their off-kilter invention and high-energy sound perfectly. The band only recorded 17 tunes in all and each one makes it onto this Shade Through the Night Door reissue on Putojefe Records. A fine remastering job brings them up to scratch and makes this an essential one for the collection for fans old and new.

Review: Sheffield metalcore giants While She Sleeps make their long awaited return on the follow up to 2021's Sleeps Society. Taking a more sprawling approach to composition this time around, and allowing outsider influences from the likes of Gorillaz, Aphex Twin and even Britpop to help steer their creative course, the resulting sixth full-length Self Hell, offers simultaneously the band's most aggressive, complex and frenetic work in over a decade, whilst tapping into newfound electronic soundscapes aided by the use of vintage synths such as the Korg MS-20 and Behringer TD-3. These warring textures provide a unique balance of post-metalcore serenity, with technical riffs weaving around lush hues of ambient, euphoric electronica akin to say Mount Kimbie, yet repurposed for angst-riddled displays of sonic, melancholic fury. That doesn't necessarily mean that there's a lack of chugging bangers with glistening synth lines, but they're deftly balanced with moments of triumphant catharsis.

Review: Atlanta, Georgia based underground noise-rock heroes Whores make their scuzzy, long-awaited return with their first album in almost a decade. Following on from 2016's demented debut full-length Gold, which was ranked as the #10 best metal album of the year by Rolling Stone and #1 by MetalSucks, sophomore effort War sees the trio utterly exhausted by the past eight years of horror that have been par for the course as a stable, sane citizen of the US. Evoking the heaving, caustic early noise rock era popularised by the likes of Melvins, The Jesus Lizard and Harvey Milk, yet with ample space provided for Helmet-indebted alternative metal heft, we're long overdue for another malodorous, unhinged and absurd batch of clanging crushers from easily one of the most underrated flag flyers for guitar-based rock at its most impenetrable, demanding, cerebral and rewarding.

Review: 'Brand New Cage' is the fifth album in as many years from mustachioed renaissance man Billy Childish and his newest group CTMF. In his usual style, the album is packed with simplicity-is-best songwriting, lo-fi fuzz, frenetic punk-rock drums and the frontman's snarling acerbic anecdotes and critiques. Highlights of Childish's lyricism come from, amongst others, the unnerving autobiography of 'The Punk Was In Me (And It Had To Come Out)', and an embittered ode to an underrepresented Rolling Stone in 'What About Brian'. The seemingly endless number of releases and collaborations over his forty-something year career makes Childish one of Britain's most prolific musicians, but he's also one of the most consistent and 'Brand New Cage' has got all the hallmarks of a classic Billy Childish album.

Review: In July this year, prolific retro-obsessive polymath Wild Billy Childish and his cohort CTMF enjoyed a week of sessions on BBC 6 Music, halving his time there between Marc Riley's and Gideon Coe's shows. This limited 10" LP is a selection of choice cuts that range from his new (then forthcoming) album 'Brand New Cage' and to songs by his 90's outfit Thee Headcoats, even including personalised jingles recorded for his hosts. 'In The Devil's Focus' has all the usual Childish hallmarks; stomping and abrasive punk and garage, rockabilly swagger, and sardonic & sneering observations. It's a tight and high calibre set of sessions, and should be essential listening for both Childish fan and completist alike.

Bob Dylan's Got A Lot To Answer For (3:34)
Review: "If the Pop Rivets (the first group I was in in 1977) had been "successful" in the formal sense, then it would have been a disaster - no learning about sound, growth, and independence. Luckily, we considered ourselves successful from the outset by doing what we wanted the way we wanted. We believed the hype of punk rock - do-it-yourself and lived it, unlike the "successful" leaders of the movement."

So says Wild Billy Childish to Damaged Goods, the label carrying this iconic renegade's appropriately-titled Failure Not Success album. Across 12 tracks, we get some typically stand out covers (one of which is Jimi Hendrix's 'Fire', no less), a new version of the landmark 'Bob Dylan's Got A Lot To Answer For', alongside a host of fresh evidence that the artist in question is a rough diamond among the remnants of true rock music - raw, rhythmic, and destined to make you move.

Review: First emerging some eight years ago, Renny Wilson made his name with a lo-fi style that since mutated in all manner of different musical directions whle maintaining the iconoclastic spirit and DIY approach he displayed right from his school-years punk band The Subatomics. This collection of material spanning seven years dips its toes into power-pop, cock-rock and garage-bound styles, yet always with an insolent and abrasive attitude, a melodious spark in the songwriting and the maverick charge of a rare talent at its disposal. Paying homage to the past whilst possessing enough irreverent chutzpah to remain vital, this is a refreshingly sharp trip down memory lane and beyond from a unique square-peg artist.

Review: RECOMMENDED
There are moments in the track 'Pushing the Extreme' that almost sound like the beginning riffs of 'I Wanna Be Your Dog', the part just after the initial screeching guitar wails. It's a guttural, grizzly, rhythmic mover that goes straight for the ethos of its title and then refuses to let go. A little like a rabid dog with a bone then.

It sets the tone for this 30th Anniversary revisit of an often unsung but - to those in the know - undisputed benchmark in the careers of a band that set standards high for post punk. The outfit that put the Pacific North West scene, and specifically that of Portland, Oregon, on the map, Youth of America is one of those records every punk fan should own and yet loads still don't. Time to rectify that mistake then.

Nine years is probably more than a hiatus really. By that point people are starting to wonder if you will ever try and make a come back. Wire did just that in 1999 after vanishing with plenty of impressive traces in 1990. In 2001, they set about putting out five records, Twelve Times You, Read and Burn 01, Read and Burn 02, Send, and finishing with PF456 Redux. The latter compared both Read and Burn EPs, alongside the full Send album, on vinyl. Sadly, technical limitations meant this had to be shortened versions of the tracks, hence the PF456 title, referring to both catalogue number and process.

It's not all bad news, though, because this means that almost two decades on we get PF456 Deluxe, which is basically the collection but without what the band described as "brutal edits". Longer, far more commanding and immersive as a result, it's still just as post punkish, punk-rooted, riff-y, original and utterly danceable.

Review: This typically robust, stomping collection of growling post-punk gems charts Wire's first wave of productivity forming their reformation in 1999. It was initially released in 2003 as a compilation of tracks released in the preceding three years (including the two Read and Burn EPs and the Send album). This edition has been re-mastered, with the brutal edits of the original CD (a requirement thanks to the sheer length of the collated cuts) replaced with more subtle and less dramatic tweaks. It delivers pretty much everything you want from Wire - intensity, darkness, energy and heaviness - and is well worth your attention, especially as this particular CD edition has only been manufactured in limited quantities.

Review: Over the course of their stop-start career, WIRE has been responsible for some brilliant and awe-inspiring music, consistently delivering an atmospheric, sonically detailed sound that has variously touched on art-punk, post-punk, experimental and alternative rock. For many fans, though, it's the work that they created during the late 1970s that will always be the band's strongest musical statement. Not About To Die, the group's latest release, revisits this fertile period, offering up raw but surprisingly on-point studio demos recorded before and during the sessions for Chairs Missing (1978) and 154 (1979). It's the sound of a band evolving and innovating, at a point when they were still to establish themselves as innovative underground heroes.

Review: Manchester based, all girl, self-proclaimed doom-grunge outfit, Witch Fever, are set to finally drop their debut full-length, 'Congregation', this October (right in time for Halloween). Built around thundering riffs, sultry, twisted atmospherics and an incomparable wall of sound style trudge, evoking the ethereal post-punk of Warpaint by way of Soundgarden, the project is already hotly tipped to be one of the breakout releases of 2022. Frontwoman Amy Walpole's cavernous, shrill vocals are as haunting as they are lush, while the cryptic, horror-inspired lyrics and utterly massive production promise one of the most vital, dynamic, and unaccommodating debuts from the grunge, punk, or alternative rock spectrums, this decade has proverbed thus far.

Review: There are sub genre labels, and then there are sub genre labels. Then there's crust punk and stenchcore. Terms used to describe some pretty serious sounds, think classic English punk combined with extreme and thrash metal. Then prepare for the air raid as you hit play on Wolfbrigade's eighth full length album and their first of the current decade. Clearly influenced by groups ranging from the full-steam-forward juggernaut of Motorhead, to the experimental and highly politicised sample-happy Napalm Death, this latest effort is about fury, rage, agony, determination and a clear resolution not to go quietly into that good night. Or, to put all that another way, Life Knife Death kicks with the force of a roundhouse, then leaps on the injured body to begin devouring it, mind, body and soul.

Review: Originally released in 2001, Progression/Regression served as the fourth overall album from Swedish crust-punk legends Wolfbrigade, but only their second with vocalist Mikael "Micke" Dahl upon his replacing Tomas Jonsson of Anti Cimex, and their first under their current moniker (the band had gone by Wolfpack up until this point before opting to change it to distance themselves from a neo-Nazi movement of the same name). Primarily rooted in breakneck hardcore aggression with enough jagged, crusted edges to echo their peers in Skitsystem (who the band released a split with), yet embellished with nuances of Scandinavian melodic death metal and classic hook-laden pub rock, it's no shock that the LP has become of one of the pinnacles of the Swedish crustcore scene, and not just of the 21st century incarnations either, but of the general movement.

Review: Massachuessetts symphonic deathcore brutalisers, Worm Shepherd, made quite the statement of intent with 2020's 'In the Wake ov Sol'. On their sophomore effort, however, it now becomes abundantly clear just how much expansive venom the group have been harbouring. 'Ritual Hymns' builds upon its preceding debut with obliterating breakdowns, complex, frosted melodics and a weary, theatrical sense of nihilism that elevate epic centrepieces such as, 'Blood Kingdom' and 'A Bird In The Dusk' to a level of spectacle only tangentially approach on their debut.

Review: Following on from the 2022 career-height of their seminal fourth full-length Hiss, Singapore grindcore heroes Wormrot return with a rare slice of fan service in the form of the Left To Rot 12". Compiling several of their previously never-pressed-to-vinyl early releases such as their 2007 Demo, 2008's 'Dead' EP, as well as their 2008 split tape with Greece's Diseptic and even some newly re-recorded cuts, the total damage clocks in at 34 tracks of venomous, vicious, vitally unhinged grindcore of the most scabrous variety, designed to emboldened only those with the most calloused and familiar of ears whilst alienating every other would be passerby listener in existence. Get in.

Review: Returning with their first full-length since 1988's Laying Down Law, Australian art-rock auteurs The Wreckery (made up of former members of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, The Birthday Party, Plays With Marionettes) appear set to make up for their near four-decade absence with a macabre, city-lit jaunt through dingy clubs, bleak narratives, and the type of film noir soundtrack-indebted avant-garde post-punk quintessential to the 80s scene. While their original demise came from creative differences from certain members desiring a more mainstream direction and the others dully devoted to challenging art-rock experimentalism, this dichotomy and rift ultimately led to what made The Wreckery such a sonically uncertain and musically dangerous outfit. Fake Is Forever serves as a return to form, victory lap and dark new chapter for the band all at once, complete with scathing lyrics, fuzzed out atonal bedlam, bombastic baritone sax and minute flourishes of delicacy.

Review: A novelty mashup album first released over ten years ago by Doomtree's Cecil Otter and Swiss Andy, Wugazi is an album reflecting the cream of the crop of the cut-and-paste style. An ultra-niche, hilarious fusion of the straight-edge grimoire-punk backing tracks of Fugazi's Instrument, and the lyrical fine-stylings of the Wu-Tang Clan's The 36 Chambers, Otter and Andy deliver a successful and convincing rerub of two of the most rebellious collective spirits in musical history. Now reissued via Eggroll.

Review: Perhaps considered one of the greatest underground mashup bootleg LPs of all time, Wugazi is a full-blown 13-track jumble sale, consisting of acapellas lifted from Wu-Tang Clan's many best works, and set against the instumental hardcore punk backdrop of songs by the Washington, D.C. iconoclasts, Fugazi. Such an incendiary fusion is not to be trifled with; be it down to Fugazi's multirhythmic dissociations or RZA's laboured flows, any given moment in this fugitive selection is sure to dazzle even the most battle-scarred of edits-heads.

Review: A usual suspect of the hip-hop re-edits scene, Wugazi was the clever novelty project of Andy Lund (Field Guide, The Millionth Word) and Kyle Smith (Doomtree), two Minneapolis producers whose lightbulb ingenuity might be said to have rivalled Edison or Pythagoras when they resolved to produce Wugazi - a mashup album consisting of instrumentals by straight-edge punk band Fugazi and acapellas of the samurai-obsessed Wu-Tang Clan. A further thirteen "chambers" are added to the Clan's original 36 - each of them sonically presenting as hellrisen schisms leading to the incipient world that is Fugazi's 13 Songs. The fusion is effective and impressive, especially given Fugazi's difficult-to-follow-for-the-average-music-enjoyer rhythms, the tonality of which lend the Clan members a whole new angsty subtext, making them sound like different vocalists and storytellers altogether.
