Tinto!
Give That
Obsession
Review: Leo Dimartino, the Manchester-based house music producer, delivers his second release under the Tino banner - no relation to Meat Beat Manifesto-affiliated breaks and beats project. A rich, vibrant slice of house music that feels both timeless and freshly inspired. Opening with 'Set You Free', the trio tap into classic deep house with sensual vocals, sharp stabs and a breezy old-school charm. 'Tinto!' follows with a more melodic, disco-tinged vibe, dripping in late-night atmosphere and subtle groove - a true deep cut. Side-B lifts the energy again with 'Give That', all crisp percussion, fun, bouncy rhythms and a smooth, infectious melody that's impossible not to move to. Closing track 'Obsession' is perhaps the catchiest of the lot, layering vocal hooks over a sleek, rolling groove that could easily become a crowd favourite. In just four tracks, Stokes, Corrigan and Powell manage to showcase a deep understanding of house's emotional core, combining for an EP that's both playful and seriously polished.

Be Your Freak (instrumental)
Review: Here comes Master At Work legend and notorious funk collector Kenny Dope's Top Ten Billboard Club Hit 'Be Your Freak' on its own 45rpm. It features vocals from Josh Milan of Honeycomb and is a blistering house cut for the peak time. The wiry synths encircle the groove, while distorted bass and slamming kicks all amp up the energy. As well as the expansive and expressive original, the flip-side features the paired-back instrumental version.

Review: Brooklyn record distributor Atypical-dopeness offer the next edition in Joaquin Joe Claussell's Unofficial Edits & Overdubs series. Following a four-tracker of largely unnamed tracks released in 2020, Iboga continues the series, this time with an iterative avatar to top up Claussell's ever-moving house continuum. Claussell's output has lately taken on an ancestral turn, influenced by the hallucinations caused by chewing the roots of an iboga plant, a chemico-spiritual fixture of initiation ceremonies found across Central Africa (whether Claussell actually did take ibogaine isn't clear). What we do know is that, in dialogue with his heritage, Claussell found himself inspired by these initiatory rituals and so set about producing this eleven-track heart-rouser, fusing the overdubbed recorded sounds of Gabon, Cameroon and Congo with his own summative, spiritual, salubrious house sound.

I Know U Care
Review: Deep house don DJ Aakmael kicks on with the release of some previously never before on vinyl remixes. He is a man who knows how to cook up warm yet dynamic sounds that are perfect for back rooms and basements when you want to get up close and personal. 'Window Seat' finds him tackling smoky soul sounds and flipping them into spaced-out deep house magic. 'I Know U Care' is then a more upbeat jam with organic percussion and swinging drums topped with another gorgeous r&b vocal. Two cosy party starters from this ever-on-form American.

Review: We're still a little way from summer but Franck Roger already has an eye on house music for the warmer months. His 'I Can't Wait' comes with a vocal from South African Ree Morris whose smoky tones bring classic deep house vibes to a nice smooth instrumental. Franck's Atlantic dubthrumental version is even more deep and cuddly then flipside joint "Goldstone 92' is a portal back to the 90s with bumping drums and humid chords that bring good vibes only.

Mushrooms (MIDGE 2025 mix)
Review: Originally released in 1996, this track has long been a staple in the deep house canon and this 2025 reissue delivers a collection of the most iconic remixes alongside with a key fresh version. The track's timeless appeal is fully realised through a combination of classic and modern renditions. Side-A has one of the most important versions with the sublime Salt City Orchestra's Out There Mix, a deep house masterpiece with ethereal vocals, hypnotic basslines and an epic feel that makes it timeless as the day it was released. The Trevino Remix flips the track, introducing a more techy, peak-time energy with a rolling bassline that transforms the deep groove into an undeniable floor-filler. Side-B showcases two more versions, beginning with the Frits Wentink Mix, which strips down the track to its soulful essence, focusing on intricate percussion and atmospheric elements. The final track and newest version, the MIDGE mix, brings a new era to Mushrooms, blending modern house vibes with a touch of nostalgia while maintaining the original's soul while infusing a fresh tempo and atmosphere. Mushrooms remains as compelling as ever, proving its staying power in the house music world - and this reissue just proves once again, how in demand this track still is today.

Review: Get Fucked might be one of the best DJ aliases ever, and the music the London pair of Nathan Coles and Nils Hess kicked out is also top draw. Now two of their early naughties classics are being reissued starting with a remastered version of 'Charlie's Knickers' which is super tight and kicking tech house with a fat bassline and mystical pads swirling around an alluring vocal. Also featured here is a previously unheard version of Nils Hess' 'Alcohol Is My Favourite' (The Staggering Fools mix) which is another archetypal tech house vibe with physical drums and perfectly weighted bass. Two bona-fide bombs.

Review: The Vessel Recordings Group label is headed up by Ira James who has shown he has great taste when it comes to tapping into global house sounds. This new EP is another standout with Toronto talent Demuir behind the beats. He brings his signature mix of influxes to this one starting with 'Conversing With Angels' which has disco-tinged loops and soulful, feel-good vibes that liven up any party. 'Everynight' has a deep cut and funky groove that is made all the more arresting and emotive with the vocals and smart synth filters, while 'Mizz Hunni' comes as a hefty tech stomper and also as a dub.

Review: Dungen Meat duo Brawther and Tristan Da Cunha deal in heavyweight, no-nonsense house and that is embodied in their label Slabs, which focuses on the deeper side of things and now welcomes Dutch talent Job de Jong for a stylish brace of cuts. 'Like This' draws from all over - dubwise vocal samples, percussion from garage, kicks from house music and echo from dub. It's a physical, bouncy sound for energising the dance floor without ever resorting to gimmicks. On the flip, 'MB' pumps a garage-house vibe with dusty drum rotations and snares that flap in the wind. Add in bulbous organ lines and balmy pads and you have a nice neon heater.

Diego Ruiz, aka DFRA, is an Argentine music producer who here works as Experience Jazz Band and opens with 'The Human Discard' which pairs warm, cuddly drum depths and rolling grouches with majestic jazz melodies. Review: Eddie Richards' vaults are surely some of the best there can be for tech house heads. The Brit was there on the ground, helping to shape the earliest incarnations of the newly emerging genre back in the 90s and early 00s and few have bettered it since. Proof comes from this reissue of a pair of remastered beauties on new label likethis. 'Destiny' has never before been on wax and is a silky, synth-laced sound with crisp drum funk and then the B-side jam 'The Soul' is a dusty and stripped-back mix of drums, hits, swirling pads and irresistibly loopy grooves.

Review: If you like your disco, funk and soul edits noodly, low-slung and spiritual, consider your options no further than Dave Maze's D&E imprint. Homegrown in Chicago - long fecundated Midwestern ground for all things dignified dance music - Maze cultivated D&E out of the local rare groove and soulful house scene in the city, going on to sign many an eminent on the circuit. But it's Maze himself here who shines, slaying the Minotaur to master a labyrinthine haul of tracks complementing an initial two 'Disco Yams' from October: these are root veg, groove prize-winners, plucked from the ground. Uncanny strings and digital disco progressions make for a rarely cold, inorchestral movement on the A, which develops quite assuredly.

Review: Boston duo Soul Clap make a routine yearly stopover in Detroit with House Of Efunk, a DJs' slamdown paying collective tribute to the dance musical legacy of Motor City. Detroit's influence on the House of Efunk is undeniable, and this 25th release in the conjoining V/A series of EPs hears Soul Clap join Axel Boman, Juliet Mendoza, Ataxia, and Mathew Jonson for a serious-unserious serum of dance delirium. Review: Reagan Grey is a Toronto-based producer who impresses with this cultured new outing on Selections. 'What You Came Here For' is pure vibes - a house cut with old-school organ stabs and hints of US garage drum shuffle, all topped with a nice hooky vocal cry from Kayenne. Kai Alce's NDATL mix layers in some jazzy keys that take things to the next level and 'Undertones' then keeps the soul quotient high with some molten chord work and dusty drum loops that are warm and heartfelt. 'Don't Stop' shuts down with a heavier basement house vibe and more smart synth work.

Review: Bobby Donny's ongoing ACE series of vinyl releases has thus far delivered some genuine deep house treats. This is particularly true of the Dutch label's sporadic, compilation style EPs, which tend to showcase tracks previously released on digital-only EPs. There's plenty to set the pulse racing on EP number four, with highlights including two fine collaborations between label founder Frits Wentink and fellow Amsterdam scene stalwart Malin Genie (the sub-heavy peak-time bounce of 'Ambrosia' and the techno-tempo hypnotism of 'Exopaq'); the ultra-deep two-step house shuffle of 'Comet (Deep mix)' by ZZ Banks; the Italo-house influenced colour of Clovis Chilwell's 'Don't Let The Night End'; and the deep, hazy and dubbed-out brilliance of 'Slow Burn' by Rico Scott.

The Trinidadian Deep vocal remix on Side-1 gives the track a techy, atmospheric spin, blending smooth, melodic layers with a breezy flow, perfect for late-night listening. Glenn Davis is next up to keep that tradition going and does so with spine-tingling vocal soul on opener 'To Believe,' which taps into classic early Chicago sounds. 'Reality Check' is a balmy follow up with painterly synths and persuasive stabs, while 'True To Yourself' rides on a gentle broken beat with Italo piano chords adding a retro 90s feel. Review: Makin' Moves dig deep for this one - an unreleased 2005 studio session from Afronaught (Orin Walters of Bugz in the Attic) and Justin Chapman (Kemeticjust), finally seeing the light of day. Born out of a chance meeting in London during the heyday of the broken beat scene, it's a time capsule from an era when nights like Co-op at Plastic People were pushing a fresh, soulful sound that still resonates today. Justin's vocal touches on themes of political oppression in the US, delivered with real feeling and weight. The late, great Phil Asher was such a fan, he jumped on the remix - his 'Restless Soul Dub' strips things back but keeps the warmth intact. Also in the package is a standout Blaktones Mix, a proper bruk workout that channels peak Afronaught energy. Timeless sounds from key players - rough, raw and still hitting hard.

Karizma, who hails from Maryland, has always been a master of rhythm and he proves it here as pulsing chords glide over loose-but-locked drums, rolling toms and sub-rooted bass. Pure and timeless, it grooves beautifully i and it's easy to see what got Atjazz so excited. His remix sounds mighty fine too, naturally leaning into the OG while adding some percussive depth, while the Yoruba Soul version strips things back further, with harmonic overdubs taking the arrangement for a meandering walk.

Review: Cooperation, the label launched some years back by members of the music community at the heart of legendary West London broken beat night Co-Op, continues to impress. There's naturally plenty to set the pulse racing on the second volume in their ongoing Our Music Our Culture compilation series. Wipe The Needle join forces with golden-voiced Andre Esput on the deliciously deep and soulful broken beat gem 'Here We Go', before the temperature is raised by a trio of extra-percussive workouts, the standout of which is Soulparlour's heavy and insatiably funky future bruk classic 'Digital Soul (Naut L8 Nite Edit)'. Other fine cuts to check include the Bugz In the Attic-esque Bruk Rogers jam 'Get Strong' and the unfeasibly weighty and jacking 'Purest Dope' by Sonar's Ghost (AKA Co-Op legend Domu).

Scuba Republic (An Abacus Story)
Review: Since debuting in 2022, Manchester-raised (but Berlin-based) musician Black Eyes (real name Matthew Jesus) has defined a trademark style of his own: 'hydro-trip', a personal variation of trippy house and techno "inspired by his love of water". Here the rising star brings his unique musical vision to Rawax's Motor City Edition series for the first time. He sets the tone with 'Scuba Republic', where futurist Detroit deep house chords and textures rise above a locked-in beat and hypnotic bassline, before opting for a jazzier, warmer and more rhythmically fluid house sound on 'Intercity Fish Vibes'. Flip-side opener 'Something Sweeter N Deeper' is gentle, bass-heavy and melody-rich, offering a blissful and immersive dancefloor excursion, while the admirable Abacus rounds things off with a fine, Motor City techno inspired rework of 'Scuba Republic'.

Review: David Morales made a lot of great house records in the 1990s, but few were quite as commercially successful as 1998's 'Needin' U', a gargantuan disco-house slammer that made liberal use of elements from classic tracks by the Chi-Lites and Rare Pleasure. On this Groove Records reissue, the 'Original Mistake' version - the familiar, filter-heavy disco-house looper that formed the basis of the radio edit - is joined by what many believe is the greatest mix, the 'Boss Anthem' take. Strangely omitted from the UK release in 1998, it's ten minutes of tough, DJ Sneak-inspired drums, restless piano stabs, righteous disco samples and oodles of energy. It's undoubtedly one of the best disco-house slammers ever made and more than worthy of a place in your collection.

Review: French DJ, producer and multi-instrumentalist Olivier Portal sadly passed away in January, aged 65. His best work came as Playin 4 The City and this EP is one of his most sought-after on the Plastik People label. It features two tracks originally released on the 'Backshop' EP on Tropism Records 2002 and one newer sound. Opener 'Minor Track' is a brilliantly aloof deep house cut with swinging, dubby drums and cute chord stabs that do enough to keep you moving. 'Backfire' is just as breezy but a little quicker with some sleek synths and nice claps moving things on with a cosmic edge. 'Backside' rides a nice chunky, tumbling rhythm with more subtle but seductive synth work.

Review: Detroit's Marcellus Pittman is one of house music's most unpredictable characters. He was a key member of the legendary 3 Chairs collective but his solo work is arguably even more essential. Here he delivers a standout track from the long sold-out 'The Eastside' EP on Adeen Records. 'I'm Gonna Be the Everything' captures the essence of Detroit deep house with its sparse, driving drums and a thumping bassline and it is rightly given a whole side here for maximum volume. Flip it over for Adeen's in-house live jazz ensemble, A Band of Brothers, rework with lush vibraphone layers and soothing saxophone melodies.

Review: For the latest offshoot of his ongoing 'unofficial edits and overdubs' rework project, New York house/disco mainstay Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell has decided to turn his hand to "African classics', delivering what he describes as "psychedelic takes". On this EP, the first of two, the Body & Soul NYC resident offers up extended revisions of a quartet of cuts. He begins with 'New Africa', wrapping a gorgeous sand gently soulful vocal workout in spacey synths and layers of spiritual house percussion, before upping the tempo on the breathless and brilliant 'Griot Ba'. His love of deep, dubby basslines, restless percussion and delay-laden vocal snippets comes to the fore on EP highlight 'The Ya Yo People', whjle 'Drum Sore' - a version of what sounds like an early to mid 1980s number - very much lives up to its name.

He begins EP number two with 'Abuja Rough', a rolling, lightly housed-up take on a lesser-known mid-80s Afro-synth-pop number, before ratcheting up the tempo, intensity and percussive pressure on 'Summer Africa'. He successfully straightens out and beefs up an organ-rich Afronbeat workoput on 'People', while standout 'Afrikan Basement' is a lightly dubbed-out chunk of densely percussive Afro-house topped off with effects-laden vocals and sax solos.

He is a master of crafting perfect loops that could roll for days a never grow dull. The full extent of that skill was laid bare on his wonderful album An Odyssey, which turns 20 in 2025. He has long been close to Sushitech who now reissue it in a very limited run on a special gold slab of wax. The tunes are heady, lo-fi, grainy and gorgeous sounds for warm-ups, zone-outs and plenty of the more discerning and intimate moments in between.

Emphasising constancy and sophistication, the dispositif of Groovebum is as follows: "untroubled by internal strife, untempted by drastic changes of direction, inspired by the long shadows of its own history but with feet planted in the present day and one eye of the future". Remarkable! Their newest comp is a Hammond-heavy hoverer in the vein of deep house, lilting between the leading solo-tastic 'Reach Up' from Radio himself, before the soulful house reactionary motto detourner 'Make Love Great Again' by Deep Roger and Marc Evans, and the closing handpan calypso culmination, 'Zou's Song', by Woody Bianchi and Pietro Nicosia.

Review: A decade after it was first released (credited, back then, to Detroit Swindle), Dam Swindle's 'Figure of Speech' EP returns on vinyl in freshly remastered form. It remains one of the Amsterdam duo's most respected and much-loved EPs, and for good reason. Opener 'Figure of Speech' is an infectious, rolling and impressively groovy workout which combines African vocal samples, layered percussion and tidy house breaks with warming deep house chords and tech-tinged electronics. 'Victoria's Secret' is a woozier and more analogue-sounding deep house groover with deliciously positive synth melodies and fizzing riffs, while 'Live at the Cosmic Carnival' is a more percussion-rich slab of jazz-flecked, Batacuda-inspired Latin house heaviness that could well be the EP's most potent moment.

Review: Session Victim ease into a looser, more eclectic groove with Sidequests Chapter One - the first in a new trilogy of EPs from the much-loved German duo. Back in their familiar DOG home, as ever, there's warmth and musicality running through it all, blending dusty house, broken beat and a touch of downtempo haze. Lead track Pulse of Memory is a collaborative effort with Viken Arman, and it's a beauty, with its woozy keys, layered textures and unmistakable shuffle. Frits Wentink takes that same track and flips it for the floor, adding a little low-end thump and clipped drums in his signature off-kilter style. The rest of the EP continues in similarly playful fashion - plenty of live instrumentation, a few carefully chosen samples, and the sense that these are producers still having fun, even after all these years in the game.

Rising over a typically loose and funk-infused backing track, the searing story of a love broken is one that anyone with a heart is likely to have experienced at some point, delivered here with the kind of melodic freedom and instinctive musicality for which the Chicago producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist is so rightfully revered. Presented in two mixes - the focused 'main mix' and the looser 'Calypso' version - the soul-drenched song continues to resonate.

'AAA001A' is a wicked mix of synthetic and organic sound - a heartfelt male vocal and new age flutes, sci-fi melodies and bubbly drums all coalesce into a hypnotic roller, then 'BBB001B' picks up the pace with a smattering of silvery toms and snares over dubby beats. Last of all, 'BBB002B' brings some colour next to trippy and abstract synths and whispered vocals that are stitched into a silky and ever-evolving rhythm. Classy stuff.

This time out the Dallas, Texas resident lands on Dolfin Records with a deeper sound that is raw and heavy. 'Choose' rides on knackered-sounding kick with just deft synth smears for company. 'Don't Sweat' has a double-time rhythm with sombre chords adding the soul and 'Want Her Around' gets the hips swinging with its lovely claps, muted, softly glowing sustained synths and lumpy deep house drums. Flipping the script yet again. 'Sunday Drive' is a more nimble and jazzy dancer and 'Take 2' is a sunny house sound with hints of Metro Area nu-disco synth magic and a big fat bassline.

The series sixth missive (and first outing of 2025) begins with 'Padja Banana', an acid-fired, delay-laden psychedelic nu-disco chugger laden with attractive synth sounds and 16-bit electronics. Label newcomer Ubre Blanca steps up next with 'Renzo', an authentic tribute to mid 1980s Italo-disco, before Austrian producer Gregory joins forces with Alexander Wirth on the synth-laden deep house hustle of 'Peaks'. To round off another inspired EP, Kelton Prima opts for a warmer and more sample-rich take on the same hybrid nu-disco/deep house sound ('Strawberry Cream').

Review: Watersheds of feelgood house and gloss-talgic beats abound on Sofia Kourtesis' new album Volver, out now via Ninja Tune. Written between Berlin and Lima, it's the producer and DJ's most vibrant and politically charged work yet, billed as a dedication to trans women and queer communities fighting for survival under corrupt healthcare systems in Latin America. Laid throughout with rousing spoken-work samples calling for street protest and revolutions of everyday life, this is a modern summer house record with a reinstallation of the same sense of political urgency inscribed in much New York ballroom and early deep house. Kourtesis likens its creation to an Almodovar film: chaotic, painful, and joy-soaked, recorded while juggling the whopping combo of world tours, grassroots activism, the care of her mother, and medical school. Lead single 'Unidos' is a kinetic collaboration with Daphni aka Dan Snaith, notably marking his first release under that alias with another artist.

It has since rocketed in price on the second-hand markets, so thankfully, the label is reissuing it this summer. Cultured Pearls's 'Mother Earth' is effortlessly cool garage-house with bumpy drums and expressive piano jams perfect for outdoor dancing. Night Society's 'You Turn Me On' has an authentic US edge and hot and humid groove with passionate vocal cries, then JJ Can's 'I Don't Know Why' is a dubby and low-slung deep garage sound with chopped vocals and a timeless appeal. Three vital cuts that will be huge all over again this year.

Stefan Ringer - "Moving Walkway"
Stefan Ringer - "PLGLY" (SR Big Room mix)
Ben Hixon - "Feels Extremely Good"
Ben Hixon - "My Family"
Review: Texas-based Ben Hixon and Atlanta's Stefan Ringer collide on this new split EP for the increasingly vital Dolfin label. It is Ringer who starts with a tight, grinding groove on 'Moving Walkway' with spoken word snippets and kaleidoscopic synth sequences bringing a trippy and unusual energy to the menacing bass. His 'PLGLY' (SR Big Room mix) is then a heavy beatdown with synths that snap and crack while jazzy percussion and dark vocals bring extra character. Hixon's 'Feels Extremely Good' is a busy, off-balance mix of deep house drums and mind-melting synth refrains while 'My Family' offer a blissed-out and soul-drenched closer.
