Starlight
Starlight (12")
Cat: AF 001. Rel: 25 Feb 21
Starlight (feat Tyesha Blount) (6:00)
Matador Beach (instrumental) (3:27)
Matador Beach (vocal mix) (2:47)
Review: Word on the street is that Alister is the next big thing to come out of the Motor City. The song writer and producer must be hotly tipped, frankly, because the one and only Omar S has taken him under his wing and recorded and mixed these two new tunes, which are tasters from his full length album to come in the spring. They bare all his hallmarks too - crunchy, dusty drums, rugged chord vamps and prickly perc. 'Starlight' is all that with an added vocal, while 'Matador Beach' is more trippy and nocturnal, with a delicate falsetto lost in pinball melodies and ricocheting hits.

All I Do
All I Do (12")
Cat: FXGANGSTA. Rel: 19 Oct 10
Roy Davis Jr - "All I Do"
Omar S - "Da Teys" (feat DJ B Len D)
Review: Omar S treats us to a second release in the space of a week, with a much deserved reissue of some 1996 Roy Davis Jnr rawness across the A Side. The Stevie Wonder classic "All I Do" gets chopped up, laid over a killer Chi town beat filled with instantly gratifying raw drum edits and augmented by some evil bass thumps. Relentlessly brilliant and sounds just as fresh some 14 years on. Echoing a current trend this side plays outwards from the inside groove. On the flip Omar S teams up with DJ B Len D for the bongo heavy deep groove of "Da Teys" a track that's characterised by melodic keys which increase with curveball drama as the track progresses.

International Love (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: NVJ 001. Rel: 26 Sep 22
Djoko - "Licks N Hits" (6:00)
Oden & Fatzo - "Late Blooming As An Art" (4:50)
Harrison BDP - "Where You To" (7:11)
Marc Brauner - "Forgotten Planet" (6:00)
Review: Novaj Records is a brand new label that looks to put out music from artists associated with Novaj media. The first various artists Episcopalian entitled 'International Love' which they say is "a universal message of peace. The musical vibrations that reverberate through our lives are universal." Musically it is spot on, with a euphoric rush of house from DJOKO kicking off before Oden & Fatz then cut it up with 2step influences on their richly melodic 'Late Blooming As An Art.' Harrison BDP takes off on a cosmic house journey for his part on the A1 and then Marc Brauner closes with lush interplanetary melodic delights on the slick tech of 'Forgotten Planet.'

Day After A Night With U (limited curacao vinyl 12")
Cat: FRO 001. Rel: 29 Sep 22
Eris Drew - "Day After A Night With U" (8:25)
Octo Octa - "Stars & Water" (6:04)
Review: Eris Drew and Octo Octa are one of the hottest couples in dance music. They perfectly embody the modern way which is to make music that is diverse and inclusive, unafraid of wearing its heart on its sleeve and never too far away from damn good fun. Their transcendental ecstatic rave sounds have brought countless dance floors together all over the world, not least fabric. The London club's in house label return the favour by putting out this limited curacao coloured 12" with one track from each of the US artists. Drew's 'Day After A Night With U' opens up with real house warmth and Octo Octa's 'Stars & Water' on the flip is equally deep and delicious.

Fog Beats
Review: Aaron Siegel's Fit moniker links up with the considerable talents of Gunnar Wendel (better known as Kassem Mosse) for this killer two-tracker on FXHE, and even Omar S gets in on the action with some mixdown assistance. "Track 1" works around sizzling drums, emotive bass and a diverse spread of melodic sources for a simple and direct slice of analogue house. "Track 2" is a real carpet-burn of a track, taking the quality up to a new level with a gorgeous line in lead synths moulded into a thoroughly sexy concoction while the drums stay pert and primed for all manner of sultry floor action.

Illyus & Barrientos - "When You Gonna" (extended mix) (5:41)
David Penn & Offiah - "Satisfied" (5:18)
Ben Remember - "Waiting 4 You" (extended mix) (5:16)
Review: Mark Knight's epic Toolroom label returns with a four-track sampler featuring plenty more big-room house excursions. First up, the boss himself offers up an extended mix of Groove Armada's legendary 'Get Down' which is full of rave stabs and big vocals. Illyus & Barrientos offer the synth laced and peak time sounds of 'When You Gonna' and David Penn & Offiah combine for the supersized piano house rollercoaster that is 'Satisfied' complete with big hooky vocals. Last of all comes Ben Remember's 'Waiting 4 You' (extended mix) which ducks and dices with some smart filters, chopped-up vocal stabs and raw percussive house energy.

Good In The Bad (feat Omar Meftah & Eric Meftah) (5:02)

Good In The Bad (feat Thomas Xu & Eric Meftah - Thomas Xu & Ian Gold remix) (9:35)
Review: Jihoon links with some talented musicians including Thomas Xu, Omar Meftah, Eric Meftah and Ian Gold on this brilliant new three-tracker on One Spoke. It kicks off with the sublime 'Good In The Bad' which is a jazzy viber with flute lines dancing their own dance above lovely contemporary broken beats. 'There Is No End' layers chords, synths and jazz drums into a richly atmospheric groove before last of all the whole of the flip side is given over to a Thomas Xu & Ian Gold remix of 'There Is No End' that is gloriously sunny jazz-fusion at its finest. These will keep you warm no matter the weather outside this winter.

Given/Sarah
Cat: FXHE (001). Rel: 04 May 11
MK aka Mark Kinchen - "Given"
Omar S - "Sarah"
Review: MK is now a global house star, but it wasn't that long ago that he couldn't even DJ. Instead, he'd pioneered the dub house sound in the 90s then gone off to become a hip-hop super producer. One of those early gems he crafted was his dub of 'Given' back in 93. It got put out by fellow Detroit great Omar S in 2011 and even today is a crowd-pleasing favourite with the muted horn stabs and garage-inflected, dubbed-out beats. Once you add in Omar S's own 'Sarah', a raw analogue deep house cut with plenty of FXHDE hallmarks like dusty hi-hats and wonky synths and you have a brilliant 12" that is now available once more.

Where's Burt? (Delano Smith reconstruction)
Moving Forward (Mike Huckaby reconstruction)
Where's Burt? (Thor reconstruction)
Don't Rush The Dub (Rhauder reconstruction)
Stripped (Exos reconstruction)
Review: After the storming success of the Sushitech reissues of classic Mosaic and other O'Sullivan material, the label turns to a host of artists to deliver respectful reinterpretations of the timeless dub techno material for this fulsome double pack. Delano Smith kicks things off with a stripped down ride through "Where's Burt?", while Mike Huckaby gets heavy on the bongo thrum when he tackles "Moving Forward". Thor gets a slender funk on when he takes on "Where's Burt?", but it's positively chunky compared to the minimal tones of Rhauder tackling "Don't Rush The Dub". That leaves it to Exos to reduce "Stripped" down even further into atomised dub matter of the finest standard.

The Shadow (feat Thomas Melchior) (10:50)
Beneath The Surface (feat Dana Ruh) (11:45)
Healing Spirals (feat Soela) (9:20)
Review: As if the first two volumes of the Dimensions series weren't enough, Steve O'Sullivan is back on Sushitech with a final Parallels addendum to the collaborative series. On this occasion, the double vinyl set is reserved for four special longform mixes which let the ideas roll out in a truly hypnotic style. Of course, that's exactly how Ricardo Villalobos likes it and 'Short Circuit' tangles up beautifully in a mesh of interlocking rhythmic hiccups and immersive pads. Thomas Melchior holds down a sweet sustained groove for O'Sullivan's illustrious melodics on 'The Shadow' before Dana Ruh helps strip things down even further on the murmuring 'Beneath The Surface'. Soela pops up once again on 'Healing Spirals', lending a delicate and intricate touch which rounds the release off in beautiful, understated style. - vinyl only!

Inner Glow (Bluespirit dub) (6:15)
Review: We're always glad to hear new material from undisputed dub techno don Steve O'Sullivan. This new one on his own Mosiac label finds him facing off with Paul Simmons on a pair of deliciously deep cuts. 'Inner Glow' is given the whole of the A-side to make its mark and it does - with a slightly more soulful sound than you might expect. Rather than pure heads down underwater deepness, it's got a heart warming vocals hook and brighter chord vamps over the signature drum smoothness. 'Still Burnin''is a quicker cut with more radiant chords and a soulful spirit, then a Bluespirit dub of the a-side zones things out nicely.

Blue Spirit - "No Suzuki" (5:52)

Review: As part of their 15th anniversary celebrations, Sushitech has decided to reissue Mosaic Classics, a 2008 collection of late 1990s works from legendary British techno producer Steve O'Sullivan, this time on clear vinyl. If you missed out first time around, it's well worth picking up. Check first the early British tech-house-goes-dub-techno hypnotism of 'Cheques Not Accepted', before admiring the sub-heavy late-night skank of 'Touch Up' and the bongo-rich pleasantness of deep techno roller 'Breezer' (itself a collaboration with John Beer'). Also worth a listen is the chunkier and sweater - but nevertheless spacey - 'No Suzuki', which was originally released under the Blue Spirit alias, and the pumping, stargazing thump of 'Sac Magique' (as Wise Caucasian).

Space Age Steppin
Review: FXHE remain in outer orbit following that stellar Triangulum Australe 12" from Omar S, presenting their final transmission of a superb year in the shape of Oh Jabba, two tracks of stargazing house music from O B Ignitt. Last seen collaborating with Omar S on the dedication to Eddie Murphy's finest acting role, the impression that Ignitt likes his cinema is only strengthened here on the Star Wars referencing lead track with some deliciously lo fi art work of that slug like character on the inner label dispelling any possible doubt. The track itself is a wonderfully simple yet melodic house track, crunchy drum machine rhythms rippling away feverishly beneath a calming array of swooping Rhodes and Moog flourishes. Complementing this, "Space Age Stepping" is a more searching affair, relying more on the rugged drums and gurgling analogue bassline to achieve lift off.

Review: After two sold out first volumes, Obscure & Obsolete are back with a third instalment in their new series. It might have been a while year since the last outing but the wait was worth it as these latest edits are on fire once again. Big Foot's 'Watch Your Step' is a funky disco gem with live drumming and loose perc, then Sehrazat goes for a tighter arrangement that reaches to the stars with its big synth work. The flip-side offers steamy, loved up and intense tackle from Leb Harmony, and there is still time for the jazz licks and clipped disco funk of Jean Musy's 'Danse Dans Le Cabaret.'

OBSSSD (6:34)
Been There Too Long (5:41)
Review: KMA60 Prozektiva's exploration of a mutant, electrified take on tech and house continues with Ocean T taking the mantle across four future-facing new cuts. The opener 'Never Enough' has steely drums that slap hard while the twisted, glistening melodies and 90s stabs bring a rave feel. 'KO' is a darker and more gritty sound with dubby low ends and vocal aspirations adding a touch of human soul. 'OBSSSD' has more old school vocals buried in a shimmering mix of synths and snappy drums and 'Been There Too Long' flips the vibe with a much more soft, rounded, warm deep house jaunt with deft vocal fragments and neon colours all making it the best of the lot.

Making sure that is the case again here are Oceanvs Orientalis and Tooker who combine for 'Il Lupo.' Review: Techy funk As and Bs from dream trio Oden & Fatzo, who finally press their hit house bit 'Lauren' to 12" wax. This 'accidental hit' came about when the bass sample, taken from a song by indie band Men I Trust, was lifted and plonked against a slapping house beat and backing strings. The resulting tune, which exploded in popularity in 2020, was a bittersweet ode to the dance in a time when no-one could think or begin to do so. Now, the instrumental occupies the B, taking up all the funking wax space it deserves.

Review: Always good to get in some new Eastenderz tackle. Its latest comes from rising French producers and live act Oden & Fatzo. The duo team up with the enigmatic Thurman for four cuts on Endz049; the unusually yet undeniably brilliant combination of uplifting house and minimal is served up on the infectious A-side cut 'Truffle Shuffle' followed by the powerful and rolling main room tech house of 'Missies Hippie'. Over on the flip, they incorporate '90s house influences once again, particularly on the emotive 'Walk On Water' peppered with those lovely M1 organ sounds and misty-eyed strings.

53X - "Simulaatio" (5:38)
Review: Avidya is back with a third EP to build on the head-turning success of the first two and it is another trip to the outer edges of the dancefloor. Odopt from Born Free and 777 Recordings kicks off with a snappy cut that is deceptively simple but devastatingly effective with its gurgling and acidic bass. Remotif is a fast-rising talent who impresses with the heavy techno sludge of 'HAJKSD15' and Full Circle aka Alexis Le Tan and Joakim link with Kris Baha to offer a remix that is all twitchy electrons, busted drum loops and fizzing pads before 53X's 'Simulaatio' is another brilliantly loose jumbled of wiry electronics, sci-fi effects and techno chug for a fantastic closing beatdown.

They are also one of th only labels we can think of who would release a whole album of acapella versions of previous album tracks. But that's what we have here from Off The Meds, whose late 2002 self titled debut sounds very different without the beats. Review: Oleg Buyanov is Ol and appears for R&S sublabel Meda Fury with his second EP since 2014's Scape Border. The A side cuts are lo-fi deep house for fans of 2014-era Huerco S, Mall Grab or 1080p style stuff. We particularly enjoyed the stripped hypnotism of the second half of this release, such as on "Yellow Eyes" which has some trippy Perlon/Romanian minimal style sound design jittering above a simple kick and hi hat affair. "Flourite" is equally as reduced; afterhours mini-funk covered in the right amount of dust and a very paranoid groove indeed.

Baby Blue
Review: The second release in Oslo imprint Snorkel's limited-edition EP series brings together Norwegian producers Olefonken and Raaja Bones for a collection of cuts that was reported recorded in a cabin in the woods (of which there are plenty in Norway). Stylistically, it recalls the krautrock, dub disco and "Scandi-learic" sounds of Lindstrom & Prins Thomas's collaborative work of the late 2000s, giving it a sparkling sheen and 21st century finish. That's arguably best exemplified by the head-nodding shuffle of 'Babor', which is the most dancefloor-friendly of the trio of cuts on show. Elsewhere, 'Uti Fjaera' is sweet, off-kilter and blissful, with child-like melodies rising above a deep, organic house groove, while 'Baby Blue' sounds like a long-lost Todd Terje remix of a Prins Thomas single from 2005.

'Isolated' for the Flaneurecordings label features the legendary Osunlade, a man who brings unrivalled spiritualism to everything he does. Even listening back to his earliest material from 20-odd years ago, it still sounds fresh and like no one else, which is why it's time to get excited about a bunch of reissues we're got hold of. 'Track 8' is an EP from 2004 with two brilliantly, beautifully raw house cuts that typify exactly what Smith is all about. The first one is eight minutes of scruffy kicks and brushed metal drums with eerie and alien melodies snaking their way through the beats. The second one is very similar in style with even more rawness and an unsettling but intriguing melody.

Review: FXHE has been brimming with activity in recent times, with a steadfast flurry of singles refusing to let the quality drop, and now the big bossman delivers another two slices of finely cured business in his inimitable style. The lead track is an arresting piece with just a kick to drive proceedings, leaving ample room for a haunting array of bleeps and a 'speak & spell' vocal until the track slowly ramps up with some more prominent drum programming. "Mayall II" on the flip is a less tense affair, with a cheery string refrain and old school jack-in-the-box beats disseminated in a plain and simple fashion.

Review: The more Omar S material we get onto our shelves, the better off we all are. We love him, as you probably well know. The Detroit misfit has this knack for making simple house and techno sound rich and full of soul. That's not to say that he can't lay down some roughness and, in fact, that's exactly what we love about him. This EP, in particular, is one we've been wanting for a while' it's Alex O Smith at his damn best the whole way through, providing the dirt and the shine simultaneously. "Blown Valvetrane" is an absolute beat of an EP, a classic Detroit killer with an FX-drenched percussion, a simple drum machine groove and a whole heap of supreme nastiness - an absolute winner! "Busaru Beats" is a murky, distorted monster that lays in the shadows of its more aggressive A-side sibling, and "Deep Valve Cover" provides that classic Omar S hit; a joint that'll blow your mind with its utter simplicity and shady demeanour. Gonna Luv You (4:22)
Bread Over Bed (6:02)
Shut Up (4:05)
Sloppy Joe (3:57)
Review: As the sweary, confrontational title suggests, this four-tracker from Detroit hero Omar-S is like a musical expansion pack for his much-discussed recent album, F*ck Resident Advisor. The no-nonsense Detroiter starts in fine fashion with 'Gonna Love You', a jaunty, piano-sporting peak-time loop jam crafted from old school vocal samples and snippets from a killer disco record, before reaching for cosmic synth sounds, lilting melodies and a melancholic mood on the starry deep house jam 'Bread Over Bed'. He subtly doffs a cap to Dance Mania style ghetto-house on the quirky, club-ready cheekiness of 'Shut Up', before smothering a classic house groove with heady hand percussion and snaking synth lines on dense and energetic closing cut 'Sloppy Joe'.

Hit It Bubba (I Want My Dadda's Rekids!!!!) (5:42)
Party Marty (5:47)
Review: The Detroit badman always delivers the goods, but he'd recently focussed on his more house-centric style thanks to a series of sleek, soulful releases. This time, he's come out all guns blazing with this new four-part killer, led by the absolutely nutty groove that is "Sink Holes" - a proper slice of Omar S acid, delivered in fine style and with his inimitable rawness. "HELL ON EARTH" is a moodier, funkier house tip with a jazzy side, while the flipside's "Hit It Bubba (I Want My Dadda's Rekids!!!!)" is a fast, upbeat house bomb with a crazy little disco sample that floats amid the grainy bass drums. "Party Marty" is a no nonsense kind of lick, pouncing away with a steady, yet unmistakably Omar S-style percussion, and a heavy bass blow. This is one hell of a way to make an appearance this early in the year - highly recommended!!

Another Man (5:40)
SUV's Aka Fatass Mobile's (7:36)
Review: Detroit's cult house champion dropped the original version of 'Another Man' back in 2019, but as with all his music, it is pretty hard to age it on the sounds alone. The title cut is a perfect example of his style - low-slung, undercooked beats that hit hard but with soul, a superb vocal sample well chosen and well deployed and some fuzzy, lo-fi synth warmth. 'SUV's Aka Fatass Mobile's' then strips things right back to thronging chords and pressured beats that feel like they will drown you but never do. As essential now as ever.

Glass (5:49)
Bug Off (7:43)
Review: Detroit house maverick and FXHE boss man Omar S is back with a new EP named seemingly in honour of himself. And why not? Few house producers can touch him even 20-plus years into his career. The title cut 'O Maarr' is dry, paired back but immediately catchy with a loved-up vocal loop and knackered kicks that bump along nicely. The second track 'Glass' is for lovers of lo-fi sounds of the sort that this man has made his signature. Searching synths circle the dusty analogue drums and coarse claps add some raw texture. 'Bug Off' is another archetypal Omar S cut - pensive chords that are whimsical and inwardly reflective over chunky beats and bass with brighter chords bursting out of the mix to bring a hint of optimism.

I Wanna Know (Extramental mix)
Review: By Alex "Omar" Smith's standards, "I Wanna Know" is something of a curveball. It sees him joining forces with vocalist James Garcia to lay down the sort of spine-tingling vocal house cut that would have once been associated with Chicago acts such as Fingers Inc. Admittedly, it contains plenty of far-sighted Detroit electronics and Smith's usual percussive shuffle, but there's a genuine retro-futurist feel that may take some of his fans by surprise. It's rather wonderful, all told, and sounds like a crossover anthem in waiting. Turn to the flipside and you'll find the Extramental Mix, a superb instrumental version that gives Smith's sublime melodies, vintage synths and sparkling electronics a chance to shine. Artwork of the year too!

Dance Your Blues Away (feat Amp Fiddler) (4:35)
Review: Any Omar S release is worth checking, but when it also features Detroit funk godfather and Motor City legend Amp Fiddler, as well as Andre Foxxe of Parliament-Funkadelic, then it's pretty much buy on sight. You never know what you're gaping to get with the FXHE boss, and never was that more true than here on this sweet little 7". A-side 'The First One Hundred' is a loop of Omar S's trademark dusty drums and a deeply buried bass guitar riff that is super funky, and 'Dance Your Blues Away (feat Amp Fiddler)' sounds like Prince making house music in Omar S's studio. They are short, but oh so sweet.

The original comes backed with a handy instrumental mix and a dreamy, plus an evocative rework by IDIB chief Johnny Jewel over on the flip.

Review: Omni AM hail from the US and were loud voices in the early tech house scene. The duo, made up of Marky Star and Adam Collins released a wealth of material, most of it on Euphoria, including an album, Key. It has now come to the attention of the next generation who keep on digging deep and so this standout EP Keep Doing That has been remastered in response. It features a clean and fresh tech cut with crisp hits and compelling drum programming, with two remixes from Mark Ambrose that'd offer a slightly different perspective. Still as good as ever.

Review: Omniverse's Never Get Enough dropped back in 1990 at the peak of the first wave of Italo house. It remains a gem no matter the era and now gets a welcome reissue which means you won't have to pay over inflated prices to own it. 'Never Get Enough' (Sunday Morning mix) is perfectly dreamy deep house with mystic synth leads and hazy pads layered up to seductive perfection. On the flip is the more punchy, US-house style 'Antares' with its icy hi hats and warm, thudding kicks. 'Never Get Enough' (club mix) reworks the A-side into something a little more punch but no less doused in subtle waves of euphoria.

La 2
Review: Four years on from the release of the label's second missive, a rather good joint EP from Camili Gil and Rodrigo Valdivia, Spanish imprint W3ird Ltd is finally ready to drop its' third release. It comes courtesy of collaboration-loving duo ONE+1 and newcomer Cheku Garcia. Unusually, the pair's two original tracks are nestled on side B. 'La 1' is immersive, deep and surprisingly loose-limbed, with the resulting blend of machine drums, squelchy bass, chiming melodies and atmospheric chords sat somewhere between deep house and tech-house, while 'La 2' is deeper, jazzier and lightly dubbed-out - think Smallville releases and you're close. Both tracks are presented in remixed form on side A, with Steve O'Sullivan's hybrid deep house/acid house re-wire of 'La 2' being followed by Maher Daniel's glitchy and fuzzy tech-house take on 'La 1'.

Oneiric & Vortex open up with a tune that brings to mind the warmth of Motor City techno on 'Oasi' before GNMR layer up supersized hi hats and seriously weighty beatdown drums, Populous offers the loopy melodic delight of 'Barragan' and G-Connection heads into the cosmos with the dreamy ambient of 'Free Your Spirit', a perfect mood build if ever we heard one. Review: Throwback acid house from Back To Life, who here reissue this Onirico (Emanuele Luzzi) gem all the way from 1991, on its 30th Anniversary. Considered a milestone in acid-deep, Luzzi barely released two EPs under the Onirico name, but that didn't mean his 303-909 fusion mastery and tapey tekkers couldn't ignite dancefloors in Rome, Chicago, Detroit and the world over. This reissue undercuts the scalpers and even includes a new insert with words from Luzzi himself.

Review: Opal Sunn aka Alex Kassian and Hiroaki OBA are dreamers and fantasists that comes over in the inventive sounds they cook up on their first Ep for the ESP Institute label. The title track 'The Problem With George' kicks off and is a dense and prickly affair. Jittery synth lines and restless snares, dubs of deep space colour and droplets of melody all make for a nebulous cacophony that tugs and pull in different directions at once. 'The Mystery Of Mr Lee' is a little more settled with its silky space house grooves and meditative chords.

Review: LA label Peak Oil make a drastic change from their intermittent release schedule with the second of two releases this week which introduces a new project from Swiss artist Florin Buchel. Advocates of Lux Rec and Mathematics will be well versed in the musical endeavours of Buchel, with his Contra Communem Opinionem project appearing on both labels, whilst the Swiss artist has plenty of work under other aliases that we implore you to explore. His arrival on Peak Oil introduces the conceptually-loaded Operation Midnight Climax project which seeks inspiration from the CIA's shadowy experiments with LSD as a chemical weapon in the 1950s and 60s. Musically, this results in some six tracks of heady, swirling jack tracks filled with blots of lysergic acid.

Review: Opolopo is a machine when it comes to serving up superb disco, funk and soul sounds. He's done so for two decades on plenty of top labels from Toolroom to Version Galore to Gamm. This time out he finds himself on a self-released tip with X Machine which is a mash-up of James Brown. The original vocals cut through funky basslines and lots of big percussions as the loose drums rumbled on next to warming organ chords. The instrumental is a more direct to dancefloor jam.

'Axxanxxan' and 'Axxiove' which arrive on this 12" from Canopy are as addictive as it gets - they fuse Afro rhythms and disco dazzle with synth innovation to create a pair of dance bombs with real tribal energy.
