Review: Since first joining forces in 2007, frequent collaborators DJ Pippi and Willie Graff have established themselves amongst the higher echelons of the Balearic fraternity, primarily by delivering records that offer a soft-focus blend of disco, deep house and downtempo grooves. Their latest single - a cover of Ewan McColl's loved-up 'First Time Ever I Saw Your Face', a song famously turned into a 1980s Balearic classic by Joanna Law - offers a particularly sumptuous variation on their sonic blueprint, with their original mix (B1) combining luscious orchestration, Spanish guitar solos, shuffling samba drums and a stirring lead vocal from Clarita de Quiroz. Phil Mison's Cantoma Dub provides a slightly tougher but no less Balearic variation, while Roberto Lodola's vocal and instrumental mixes give the track a warming and jazzy deep house feel.

Review: Lol Hammond is a former member of Spiral Tribe and early live techno act The Drum Club who now makes music on his own as Wah Wah Planet. Back in 1990 is when he penned this fantastic five track Balearic house EP alongside Russell Crone and with female vocal contributions from Lucy Sian. It very much lay out an early blueprint for UK street soul and the opener on the A-side 'Jewel' explores a romantic theme with hooky pop lyrics. Things get more left of centre on the 'Love FXU' with three trips into a smoother sound world perfect for sun kissed island dancing and with influences ranging from early breakbeat and trip hop to elements of dancehall music.

Review: You can always count on Magic Wand to bring a classy edge to any edit they press, and their latest batch of re-rubs is no exception. There's a downtempo slink and Balearic haze to the tracks on offer here, leading in with RSS' Clandestine Dub' of 'Somebody Told Me' before Baz Bradley takes over with the piano-powerd paean to tripping, 'Acid Love Bath'. Secret Soul Society slip into something more comfortable as they sample Whitney Houston for 'When The Night' and then the CC edit of What I Am does some magic with an eternal Wham! banger.

Review: Stevie Kotey is the label head at Ambassador's Reception and also the man behind the Steamy Window alias. He has been digging in the archives and decided to relaunch his label with some superbly laidback Balearic sounds that have us casting out minds forward to summer in an instant. These are in collaboration with Californian artist Woolfy and are two balmy, sun-soaked and blue-eyed downtempo grooves with breezy guitars riffs, gentle synth waves lapping at your feet and sprinkles of skyward melody. This is a welcome return to the fore for this tasteful label.

Review: New artist Daniel Wainwright brings his psychedelic vibrations to Is It Balearic ...? Doing It is a slow motion sleazy trip into the acid house. Swirling vocals and psyched out guitars melt into chuggy acid beats and effects. Coyote up the tempo a touch and strip back the whole track on their remix. Dubby vocal samples and muted guitar groove along to an acidic finale. The second remix is a real thing of beauty from Mushrooms Project. Keeping the same slow tempo and adding space and texture with mellow guitars and extra sitar. A subtlely developing tribal workout. Groovy man.

Review: On the 'Tanzanite' EP, Jimmy Wallace channels a much livelier 'world' house sound than most can muster. Through its various offbeat chants and smattery percs, we're met with an EP so foudroyant, we're going to need a bigger fire hydrant. The timbral joys of percussion are what makes this one both stand out and yet stick to us, in ironic succession. Opener 'Tanzanite' sounds like the feeling one gets when one is certain they've found a new kind of rare gemstone; with the apparently disalienating promise of personal wealth gain, mining the stuff suddenly doesn't seem so hard. Such pockets of energy are equally evinced on the vibraphonic popcorns of 'M'bira', which makes adroit use of the African instrument over what is otherwise a wilfully sparse beat, as if to suggest that a single instrumental pick-me-up is all one needs. On the B, 'Red Velvet' and 'Violet' move in completely different directions, with the former melding moods of creepy and whip-cracking, and the latter slowing things to a desert chug. No squibs in earshot.

Review: Holding up a mirror to modern overflows of living capital, which impugn our many British 'urbs, Gordon Chapman-Fox (aka. Warrington Runcorn New Town Development Plan) presents 'Overspill Estates', the follow-up release to 2024's full-length LP Your Community Hub. As with all other basic life necessities, new-build estates - repackaged as commodities - require excessive production for developers to maintain illusions of value. The irony at the heart of Chapman-Fox's project, however, is that the ideology driving the edification of the UK's post-war planned communities was the overspill of people, not space. Unlike the overflow of unlivable space characterising big cities like London and Manchester, "overspill" in places like Basildon, Cwmbran, Redditch and Letchworth referred to densely compacted, deprived populations from other areas. As objects become subjects and vice versa, full-length records from cheekily sobriqueted electronic music producers likewise need glimpses of the cutting room floor, and this retrofit rollick through four further mind-benders proves how (satisfyingly) long things can take to gestate.

Review: Japanese guitarist Kazumi Watanabe has been a treasure of leftfield music in the Far East since the 70s, and Jazzy Conscious are doing a great service in highlighting the delicate talents of this gifted artist for a new generation. There's a new age lilt to the looped up melodic chime patterns that course through "Garuda" as they flirt with Watanabe's effervescent playing. Kuniyuki then hops on the B side to deliver a contemporary remix of the track that shapes out a brooding, immersive atmosphere populated by earthly drums and looming reverb.

Review: While all of NuNorthern Soul's releases are delightfully warming, sun-baked and mood-enhancing, the label's latest release - a new EP from imprint stalwart and long-serving American producer Marshall Watson - is especially impressive. Musically, it's sun-bright and sonically enveloping, offering a calming and colourful bath for the head, heart and soul. Interestingly, there's a touch more dancefloor focus than you may expect - see the Balearic-acid shuffle of 'Open Sky', the grandiose, enveloping chords and bustling breakbeats of 'The Landscape' and the tactile Balearic nu-disco of 'Sweet Sounds' - but wholeheartedly horizontal moments are never far away. In this category you'll find delightful opener 'High Desert' and Seahawks' accompanying remix of the same track, which is as magical as you'd expect it to be.

Review: For the latest release on his fast-rising Shades of Sound imprint, Joe Morris has snapped up the first collaboration between experienced American producers - and nu-Balearic scene stalwarts - Marshall Watson and Cole Odin. The pair have conjured up two versions of 'Just a Daydream Away': the chugging, percussion-rich, heads-down excellence of the 'Rocket Ride' mix, where sun-soaked melodies and hazy synth-sounds rise above a locked-in groove, and the baggy, saucer-eyed, shoegaze-goes-Balearic disco shuffle of the immersive 'Space Flight Mix'. Sean Johnson dons the Hardway Brothers alias for a remix that channels the spirit (and sound) of AR Kane, before Morris steps up with the Beach Breaks mix, a deliciously psychedelic, loved-up affair that has 'sun up at an open-air free party' written all over it.

Review: Contemporary dark disco-dance collective Leng have their fingers in many pies, one of them being the San Francisco Bay Area. Said connection comes to the fore once more on the imprint's latest release, which hears Odin join forces with fellow San Francisco resident Marshall Watson, a long-serving producer, engineer and live performer known globally for his Balearic-minded productions. 'Voyager' is a stultifying and forward-driven track, one whose whirling plucks and funky basses leave the listener with no other choice but to strap in and give in to an imminent whisking-away. The extended Guitar mix on the B-side amps up the splashy tom-tom fills and proffers an extensible bass guitar focus, madding the mix further. Then, to round off the EP, Odin & Watson pay tribute to underground new wave titan Patrick Cowley with a smattering of sequenced beats and trance motifs.

Review: Some eight years after making their debut on Drumpoet Community, Swiss five-piece Wavetest returns to action. Interestingly, they've resurfaced on Phantom Island, a Balearic-minded label co-founded by legendary crate-digger and producer Lexx. It goes without saying that the three tracks that make up Wrong Planet are hazy, languid and sun-kissed, mixing saucer-eyed synthesizer motifs, dreamy chords and gentle drum machine hits with blissfully jazzy and life-affirming guitars and other vibrant but delicate instrumental flourishes. For dancefloor plays, we'd recommend the Balearic dub disco brilliance of flipside "Hanstraum (Love Mix)", while "Zapelon" is a rush-inducing chunk of gentle sunrise beauty that's worth the admission price on its own.
