Atlantic
Atlantic (12")
Cat: ELM 001V. Rel: 17 Jun 16
A Sides - "Atlantic" (5:26)
Will Miles - "Bass God" (5:17)
Review: American drum & bass is thriving right now and Elm Imprint is right in the eye of the storm with its monthly dispatches. This is the first time they've split artist duties across a 12" and it works a treat... Side A is all about A Sides with brash cymbal-splashing jungle roller while side B is all about the unstoppable Will Miles who pays homage to the 97-era techstep with brittle two-steps, gnarly bass plunges and a classic spoken sample. On-point.

Sam Binga - "Wasted Days" (feat Warrior Queen - Sully remix) (4:40)
Pev & Kowton - "End Point" (Sam Binga remix) (5:23)
Review: A special vinyl-only remix couplet from Critical's bashment professor Sam Binga. First-up the ever-sharp Sully jungles the dickens out of the Warrior Queen-front "Wasted Days", adding a whole hurricane of energy through the crafty edited breaks and cool sense unpredictability. Flip for a trip to Livity Sounds circa 2013 where Pev & Kowton laid down a delicate synth jam and Sam craftily brings it up to around 160, adds a few fluttering twists but loses none of its crystalline soul. Grab this while you can.

Not Too Late
Cat: SS 003. Rel: 17 Oct 18
Hydro, DLR & War - "Not Too Late" (5:58)
DLR & Hydro - "Trick" (4:56)
Review: Like its two predecessors, Sofa Sound's third missive is shaped around boss man DLR's ongoing studio hook-ups. On side A, the Bristol-based beat-maker joins forces with Hydro and War, who last worked together for a 12" on Commercial Suicide earlier in the year. Pretty heavy and to the point, the trio's "Not Too Late" is a raucous, club-ready roller rich in snappy snares, punchy kick drums, rapid-fire analogue sub-bass and creepy, clandestine aural textures. Over on the flipside, DLR and Hydro explore similar pastures on "Trick", whose creepy and chiming ambient intro makes way for genuinely crunchy D&B drums, fluid bell melodies and the kind of body-rocking bassline that will send surges through your system when played over a sizable soundsystem.

Frequency (remastered)
Cat: CW 129. Rel: 25 Jun 24
Frequency (6:26)
You Got Me (5:54)
Review: What a winning combo this was. Two very well respected artists from the first generation of jungle d&b pioneers Alex Reece and Wax Doctor AKA Jazz Juice AKA Lunar Funk AKA Unit 1 AKA Fallen Angels, an act responsible for a modest body of work on Creative Wax throughout the 90s including these two gems from 95. 'Frequency' was a benchmark sci-fi tear-up at the time and remains just as breath-taking to this day. 'You Got Me' is a little icier in its charm. Stripped back and mystical, there's so much space between the elements you might get lost inside. Angelic.

Lateral Thinking
HYDRO feat WAR
Cat: UM 021. Rel: 19 Mar 19
New Territories (7:06)
Sagarmatha (6:44)
Review: Fresh on the recently rejuvenated Utopia, Hydro & War are about to drop their powerful debut album "Lateral Thinking". And these are the first two tastes of what's to come. "New Territories" cuts straight the point; a gritty roller laced with layers of percussion, a high voltage bassline that's soothed by the glacial chords. "Sagarmatha", meanwhile, shows off the pair's more emotional side as it takes us to the summit with its breezy, spacious barbed soul charm. Bring on the album.

Detroit
Detroit (12")
Cat: UM 026. Rel: 06 Oct 21
Detroit (feat Mateba) (5:37)
Fugue (5:58)
Review: Hydro & War are back with a much anticipated follow up release on Utopia. Their Detroit 12" comes two years after their last outing and is another powerful two track that opens with super deep and soulful sounds. The fluttering snares, suspensory bass and occasional vocals all lure you into a world of warmth and futuristic musical ideals that leave you feeling soothed. On the flip is a more dark, heavy vibe: 'Fugue' is a real stepper with twisted bass and hefty subs all overlaid with prickly percussion and endlessly tumbling toms.

Breakbeatscientist - "You're Really Scaring Me" (6:42)
Worldwide Epidemic - "Curious" (5:05)
DJ Jedi - "Feel It" (5:39)
Review: In a galaxy far, far away, DJ Jedi has mustered a "Rebel Alliance" hell bent on destroying the dark forces of drum and bass boredom. First into battle is grizzled X-Wing pilot Keezee, who hurtles headlong towards the Death Star via the all-out assault of jungle roller "Into The Depths". Meanwhile, Breakbeatscientist and Worldwide Epidemic attempt to incite an Ewok rave riot by serving up contrasting takes on the classic UK hardcore sound. Just at the point that all seems lost, DJ Jedi floors a platoon of Storm Troopers with the razor-sharp rave riffs, bustling pianos and scattergun rhythms of "Feel It". The Force is strong in this one.

Rene LaVice - "Headlock"
Cyantific - "Infinity"
June Miller - "64 Thousand Dollar Habit" (feat Secret Handshake Club)
Wickaman & RV - "Ev's Dead"
Review: Andy C's long running Ram Records imprint drops the fifth edition of their excellent Dimensions series - and the first since 2009 - further showcasing the fact there is still a wealth of talent and ideas in the drum & bass arena. This double drop of wax gets off to a blinder thanks to "Headlock" the contribution from newcomer Rene LaVice which contains deftly combines touches of classic D&B with his own contemporary production nuances. Hospital regular Cyantific continues his flirtation with Ram on the superb "Infinity" which is a masterclass in peak time drops and rolling beats. On the second twelve June Miller and the mysteriously monikered Secret Handshake Club bring something different to Ram with "64 Thousand Dollar Habit" which veers between emo rock and brutal, unrelenting D&B with abandon - proceedings veer back towards more traditional Ram fare on the sci fi roller "EV's Dead" from Wikaman & RV.

Intersect (6:27)
Early Reflections (7:21)
Igloo (6:33)
Post-Truth (7:43)
Review: Repertoire have finally ensnared Law & Wheeler for their full extended play debut with this fittingly entitled Post-Truth EP. The pair have been producing together more than 18 months and now draw on all their experiences and influences and distill them into six sizzling tracks of forward facing, turbulent riddims. The range of moods is impressive, as they taking in stripped back and cavernous steppers like "Early Reflections" as well as darker vibe son "Intersect". "Igloo" is an all out drum assault that never lets up and "Post-Truth" continues on that theme as it sinks you ever deeper into an abyss.

Influx (4:52)
Guinea Pig (4:28)
Review: Utrecht label Blackout first released Edge by German production team Neonlight and Wintermute as a five track digital EP back in March. The transition to the vinyl format for this 12" release sees the trio's work lose three of the tracks but the remaining two are potent enough to satisfy the needs of those craving some darker arts. Up top "Influx" rolls to a traditional drum and bass groove but Neonlight and Wintermute do it so well, but it's "Guinea Pig" that will delight the freakier selectors out there. Here the trio carve up all manner of broken beats, ragged percussion and razor sharp synths with the sort of aplomb that leaves you gasping.

Review: Hamburg herberts Sozialistischer Plattenbau get busy with the 21st edition of their breakneck funk Dubcore series. This time label regulars We Rob Rave and Polish duo Riffz & Dubskint take a tune each per side. R&D's 'Like This' is straight from the book of 92, all big pianos and feel good flavours while WRR's 'Weedless Bacon' takes things into much darker territories. Flip for more hardcore solutions as 'Team Bird Up' goes full on 4x4 before Riffz & Dubskint sign out on some manic Dreamscape tip. Hardcore, we suspect you know the score.

Keeno & Polaris - "Leviathan" (5:42)
Review: Hitting a remarkable 400 releases in their catalogue, the mighty Hospital Records enlist a whole spectrum of high grade link-ups to celebrate. First up is the bossman London Elektricity and Hozzy heavyweight S.P.Y on the prowling, purring 'Find Another Fool'. They're joined by Subwave, Bop and Degs on the cosmic soul vibe 'The Shade' before Makoto and Urbandawn get all hairy and ravey on the walloping Conrad-featured 'Magic Eyes'. Rounding up the EP comes the jazzy vocal yearns of 'Broken Bones' from Mitekiss and Whiney, Fred V and Loggy on a planet-bounding bruise-up with 'You Keep Me High' before Keeno and Polaris close the EP with skin-rippling operatic anthemia. Here's to another 400.

Tim Reaper & Worldwide Epidemic - "Track 1" (6:20)
Tim Reaper, Dwarde & Gand - "Track 2" (6:31)
Tim Reaper & Dwarde - "Track 3" (5:11)
Dwarde & Gand - "Track 4" (6:53)
Review: Since establishing the series back in 2016, Tim Reaper and Dwarde have made sure that each Globex Corp 12" comes packed to the rafters with ethereal and atmospheric drum and bass. Predictably, you'll find more of the same on the series first outing of 2018. Reaper is naturally in the thick of the action, first joining forces with Worldwide Epidemic for the spacey and bass-heavy, jungle-goes-techno stomp of "Track 1", before working alongside Dwarde and Gand on the dreamy deep jungle of "Track 2". Turn to the flipside for Reaper and Dwarde's bouncy, breakbeat techno workout "Track 3", where deep space chords float above a decidedly hectic rhythm track, and the sub-heavy jungle jazziness of Dwarde and Gand's "Track 4", which makes great use of some cheeky MC Hammer samples.

The Reason (5:15)
Funk Off (4:52)
Little Things (5:14)
Cold (6:19)
Review: Timeless D&B exercises right here from Walk:R as he returns to Guidance with four absolute gems. 'The Reason' says everything you need to know about this EP as it rumbles with a Soulr/ Intalexual flavour, all tense and paired back but not too stern with it. 'Funk Off' plays the perfect foil with Die-style double bass strums, 'Little Things' brings a lamenting, more classical liquid style to the mix while 'Cold' finishes the EP on a real grumpy Perezian strut but in Walk:R's own style. What an EP - don't walk on by, you will definitely regret it.

Bogar (3:39)
Review: Switch! Best known for his purring, dark D&B grooves, War gets a very rare - but very welcome - 140 vibe on. Smouldering with soundsystem soul, he flexes across the spectrum. 'Steamer' brings the dusty jazz elements and that hazy summer afternoon feel, 'Beefy' lives up to its name in every possible way with its brute funk and physicality bumping and chugging like Bomb The Bass for 2022 while finale 'Bogar' ups the tempo to around 150 with a heavier, paranoid twist and just a touch of ghetto in those pushed kick/sub combos. A superlative outing from Mako's Utopia stable, War needs to venture into slower territories more often.
