Review: Ghost Dubs aka. Michael Fiedler returns to pile on the Pressure. Following recent acclaim-gatherer Damaged, this extension of the LP further serves to distend the dub, surveying and excavating fossil-rich terrains of soiled bass and coarse texture. Six reconstructed dub reformations, only two tracks, ';Chemical Version' and 'Wired Version', were previously available digitally; both introduce the record as warped yet unassuming undercuts, ripe for the meditating-to. 'Thin Dub' dissolves the mood into an echo-drenched texture; the track is marked by an up-down, contradistinct set of tuned impacts. 'Dub Craft', meanwhile, snatches the crown for most subby tune of the year.

Side one takes in references from UK street soul and reggae and features two late-'80s tracks by Howard Hill with machine-led rhythms, rudeboy reggae skank and soulful pads. Protek's 'I Love to Dance With You' is a proto-house gem featured in a Jura Soundsystem mix and here it gets a loving re-edit by The Nightlark. Side B includes an instrumental-driven track with spacey FX from The Cool Notes' and Ilija Rudman's 'Dub 4 Love' which is a knowing nod to acid house's golden era.

Review: London's Prince Fatty is a determined dub solo artist ready to take on the world and his mission is more than well reiterated on his latest expansion in the US realm of Seattle. Dub Battle For Seattle brings a further eight dub dramatics to the fold; the tracks were conceived many moons ago on the south coast of England, and in response to Little Roy's eponymous 2021 album of the same name, which took after the 1999 anti-World Trade Organization protests in Seattle, whilst also making for eight dub reggae cover versions of Nirvana's greatest hits. Little Roy's originals are well deglazed as Nirvanic versions by Fatty, whose bulbous productions serve to enliven and trip them out.

Review: A fascinating new long-player from Justin Robertson under his new Five Green Moons alias, marking another new stylistic turn for the Mancunian DJ and producer, whose main remit is house music to most. Moon 1, by contrast, is not "Justin at the house controls", but rather him delving into "his roots, digging around through the likes of P.I.L, Gang Of Four, On-U-Sound, Current 93, Coil, Sabres Of Paradise and all manner of post punk echoes", a "haunted ballroom of memories", in the artist's own words. Our glossing of Moon 1 is that this is probably the best post-punk come dubstep crossover record you'll hear in 2024, though it does also cross over into wonky beats and monologuing ambi-trance on occasion too. The record moves increasingly mauve-psychedelic as it progresses, with 'Everything's A Song In A Sound World' paring back its off-the-top vocal slogans for a purer exercise in rattling psyche-dub and 'I See All And I See Nothing' admitting to the contradiction of humility and quixotism in the same fret-slid breath.

Review: Disco Dub Band's "For The Love of Money", a one-off collaboration between producer Davitt Sigerson and reggae musician Mike Dorane, has long been considered something of a classic by those who like their disco to come with a big dose of dub-wise flavour. Here the instrumental O'Jays cover, which originally appeared on the Movers label in 1976, is given the remix treatment by long-time fans Mr Bongo. The superb A-side, in which Dorane's instrumental talents take centre stage, naturally comes accompanied by the frequently played Dub interpretation, a typically wild and bass-heavy affair that sounds like it was mixed "live" in one take in true Lee Perry/King Tubby style. If it's not already in your collection, it should be.

Here he steps up to Lempuyang with his Blue Channel alias alongside Jonas Schachner aka Another Channel for more silky smooth fusions of authentic dub culture and Maurizo-style techno deepness. Watery synths, hissing hi-hats with long trails and dub musings all colour these dynamic grooves. They're cavernous and immersive and frankly irresistible and the sort of tracks that need to be played loud in a dark space. In that context, you'll never want them to end.

Review: Vin Gordon, also known as Don Drummond Jr, is a celebrated trombonist from Jamaica who now drops a second 12" on Finnish Dub & Sound International with the Dubsetters. It carries on the good work of their first outing with rootsy and organic reggae rhythms topped with the signature smooth sounds of Gordon's melodies up top. After the original version of 'Get On The Groove', the B-side keeps things sweet with a Groove Dub that is as deep as they come and stacked with echo and reverb for that lovely authentic sound and then closing it out is 'Groove 78 Style' which is more percussive, splashy and cavernous with some deft studio effects added in.

Review: As well as navigating the realms of dub and reggae, infusing each track with his signature vintage sound and infectious grooves, Prince Fatty is well known for taking famous songs and flipping them into reggae territory, a wonderful mix of the familiar and the unepxected that usually works wonders on the dancefloor. With the fantastic 'Black Rabbit,' dub don Prince Fatty masterfully tackles Jefferson Airplane's 60s anthem 'White Rabbit', which took its inspiration from Lewis Carroll's surreal story Alice In Wonderland but hooked those references up to the drug experiences of those countercultural rtimes. The A-side is graced by with the vocals of regular Fatty collaborator Shniece, whose performance does more than simply ape Grace Slick's, adding lines and heaps of her own personality, while rich basslines, swirling echoes and soulful melodies all showcase some exceptional production skills. Naturally, there's a dub version on the B-side, and all in all this a testament to Prince Fatty's enduring influence in the contemporary reggae scene.

Review: The Vinyl Only label is a hot one amongst heads and now it hits double figures with a cheeky new 7" packed with plenty of delicious dub. It is the work of the Vinyl Only Allstars and A-side cut 'Dub, Dub, Dub' is just that - a big bottomed sound with cavernous low ends, oodles of reverb and some well-treated vocals floating in amongst the liquid chords. 'Find A Reason' is another rich soundscape with natty guitar riffs, filtered vocals and a sunny disposition with some playful pianos.

Review: Dub wholesalers Arawak reissue a popular 1979 lovers' rock version of The Dramatics' '72 soul classic. The original 'In The Rain' is notable for being one of the first pieces of popular music ever released to incorporate the sounds of rain and thunder; this is sadly not literally repeated on the dub version here, but the sense of expanse and reverb control by Brixton dub deejay Webby Jay is an expert portrayal of the wet aftersod. It's stopped raining, and each kick-rim unison sounds like a puddling, pooling splash in dawn light, giving off plumes of vapour. A real textural, high-quality dub riddim; we can feel droplets on our ears.

Review: The eleventh in an ongoing series from Rotterdam's Echo Ltd., these numbered 7"s bring together many an unknown artist - the crucial factor being whether said artists can muster the subtlety of a highly particular, brilliantly beatific brand of dub techno via dubstep. Another link in the chain of a serial concatenation of steppers stamps, Dutch analog dub producer and label owner Frenk Dublin joins the ranks of SND, RTN and many more unknown artists here for a four-song sea's worth of salubrious texturisers, all duly marked by the patented heat-knifed hazes first deployed in the dance by Maurice Von Oswald and company. Dublin moves increasingly exploratory here, with closer 'The Ancient Order' sounding like the polyatomic movements of a probing deep-sea vessel sent to explore Atlantis.

Review: Stix Records is the sub-label of superb French outlet Favorite Recordings, and it is reserved for heavy dub cuts. This one finds label regular Mato reworking a classic reggae roller first written by Kool & The Gang. His gorgeous version is perfect for hot summer nights with its languid Fender Rhodes leads and sun kissed beats. It's loved up and perfectly, frankly. On the flip is a reggae rework of Bill Withers', who is sadly no long with us, 'Use Me,' repackaged with a playful harmonica lead and more grinding chords over the gently tumbling beats.

Review: Disco-infused reggae and soulful grooves are on the agenda as Prince Fatty takes to the controls with regular vocal colllaborators Shniece and Horseman along for the ride too. For the Disco Deception album, he raids the reinvents various classics in the image of his own signature low-end energy and impeccable production, giving us original and dub mixes to choose from in several cases. His version of Krfatwerk's 'The Model', which features both Shniece and Horseman, was an underground smash when it emerged a couple of years back and sounds as vital as ever. 'Fever', made famous by Peggy Lee as far as 1958, gets some soul-stirring vocals from Shniece, and Tom Browne's 'Funkin' For Jamaica (NY)' is a glory of funky basslines to shimmering horns. A magnetic atmosphere that keeps listeners engaged from start to finish, all with character to spare.

Review: Once again, Frenk Dublin dabbles in dub and muses on spacetime hardcore continuums with his latest release for the highbrow techno collective Arts, based in Rotterdam. From the off of 'Chord Dancer' and 'The Lost Realm', we feel only lightly electromagnetically convected, with tonic melodics and pleasing phonic physics rattling against and past our ears. It's only at the turn of the B-side that we hear anything remotely less salutary, with 'Time & Space' preferring a mood of deep-space vacuity, and 'Sapphire Dub' advancing, at an ever glacial pace, through ejected fields of chord residua and rimshot-kick impact events. Closer 'Inspected' unsettles rather than resolves any remaining tension, its monotone echo blurts suggesting more to come.

Review: Nope, sadly it is not that Prince Philip - the late Queen's husband - though boy would we love to hear what he could do on a mixing desk with those porcine fingers of his. Instead, this is a collection of sounds dedicated to the work of the late "Prince" Philip Smart, who was the first-ever engineer at King Tabby's legendary Tubby studio beside the boss himself. He was key to sharing the early sound of dub though he was rarely credited at the time. Listen to this collection of gems from between 1973 and 1976 across to glorious slabs of wax though and you'll be sure to be a fan.

Featuring a mix of major hits and rare tracks, this collection highlights his brilliance as a producer, arranger and pioneer of roots, dub and lovers rock. Not only was he one of the first to blend disco with reggae but he was also important for fusing the disco standard 12" and using for Lovers Rock artists. His use of the format to create dynamic dub edits is a standout element, cementing his legacy in reggae production. Disc 1 includes Errol Dunkley's title track, Marie Pierre's soulful gems and Janet Kay's classic 'Silly Games', which brought lovers rock to mainstream audiences. Review: Slyly reissued for the new millennium, Lowell "Sly" Dunbar hears his flame relit as both the front face and back beat of Sly & The Revolutionaries, on this reissued 1980 collaboration with Jah Thomas. The second LP to be released by the in-house Channel One Studios band, then under the auspices of Chinese-Jamaican exec Joseph Hoo Kim, this is a red-and-black insurrection in sound, induing beret, spliff and bayonet. Dunbar, the prolific reggae drummer, is heard in almost crystalline sound here, reflecting the scrupulous recording quality of Channel One employ in the late 70s. Each track is a tribute to a drug or paraphernalia, and our faves have to be 'Rizla' and 'Cocaine'.

Review: Judah Tafari's new 7" Great Escape / Bezos vs. Musk delivers a potent dose of classic roots reggae with deeply spiritual Rastafari themes. Though not widely known, Judah Eskender Tafari has garnered a dedicated following through his work since the late '70s. Review: Jennifer Lara delivered a rather oblique reggae record in the form of 'We Can Make It Work' in 1980 for Uptempo Records, who've today repressed and redelivered it to fresh ears. The Studio One maverick was a mammoth 7" releaser, but few of her records fell happily afoul of the flukily muted vocals heard on this one, which sound to serve Lara's voice in the manner of a wooing, gothic castle-haunting ghost. The subject matter of resuscitating a lost romantic cause helps in this regard: with offbeat bass bubbles and pitch-warped chords, the whole track feels haunted but still jocular, as if the singer-subject remains fixated on something largely dead, but still, on the off chance, revivable.

Review: Dub & Sound International returns for a third time and this one welcomes legendary Jamaican trombonist Vin Gordon who is rightly 'Digging The Vibes.' The title track kicks off and pairs his playful patterns with a Dubsetters rhythm and some nice sunny and soothing melodies from Trommie aka Don Drummond Jr.. After the horn-led, organic and unhurried instrumental comes a dub that is fleshed out with a little more echo and is a sublime bit of roots. A second version adds another perspective to the original and we already look forward to hearing more from this project.

Review: Christine McNabb's UK lovers' 12" soul rarity, 'Love You / Combination', originally self-released in 1981. With backing vocals from Caron Wheeler, Black Slate's rhythm section and the in-house musicians at Eve Studios in Brockley, South London, this is a highly toned waft of steam; McNabb sings in a whistle register, insisting we're her one and only as she launches into a bopping improvisation near the midpoint, as an irresistible funk line chugs below, aplomb. 'Combination' is the name of the minimalised instrumental version: both tracks are standalone greats, and draw their inspirations from Afropop icons like Miriam Makeba, despite there being some crossover and cash-in on the emerging UK lovers' rock market.
