Love Me A Little While Longer
I Can't Help Myself
Review: In the late sixties and early seventies Sammy Campbell had a record label and recording studio in New Brunswick NJ which churned out countless funk and soul masterpieces, but for various reasons, only managed to release one single before the label went under. Truth & Soul is proud to present another gem from the vaults of Blacktop Records which has never been released until now. A-side "Love me a little while longer" is Mr. Cambell's homage to Screamin' Jay Hawkins. It Starts with one of those sought after durm breaks, then turns into a pysched-out funk sound, complete with fuzz guitar, group harmony vocals, and so much raw soul it begs to be played over and over. B-Side is a cover of the Four Tops classic hit 'Can't help myself' performed in a raw style that puts a new twist on the original, rumor has it that at local shows in New Jersey back in the day, the version had people losing their minds, and it's easy to see why.

Funky Nassau - "Bahama Soul Stew" (Danny Krvit edit) (5:41)
The Armada Orchestra - "For The Love Of Money" (Danny Krivit edit) (5:47)
Review: Ten years deep and these edit still pop... Krivit takes everything that rocks and pops on Orgone's cover of The Beginning Of The End's seminal "Funky Nassau", extends it, applies the breaks and turns it inside out. It genuinely can't fail. The very same can be said for his take on Armada Orchestra's cover of Gamble & Huff's O'Jays smash "For The Love Of Money". Focusing in on the instrumentation and slinkiness of the groove, Krivit is a true edit master.

Southpaw Chop - "Chocolate Sunday" (3:18)
Review: DJ KOCO AKA Shimokita and Southpaw Chop join forces once more for a tidy new vinyl only 7" under their Funky Soul Brother alias for Southpaw Chop's eponymous label. 'Kiwami' is a raw funk tune with razor sharp hi hats over spy theme-like 60s synths and bi claps. It's brilliantly retro and filled with dance floor drama. On the reverse, Southpaw Chop goes it alone for 'Chocolate Sunday' which his a more deep cut and languid tune that lazes on drawn out funk riffs and cosmic synth explosions.

Review: Athens of the North has a famously busy rate of release and so it is no surprise that they keep that up even in the first months of the year. A slew of singles and an album are all dropping at the same time and this is one of them - yet another gold standard reissue, this time of Charles Barnwell's band The Funnybone Express. This 7" is a superb bit of deep funk with hints of modern soul that were huge back in the day and are sure to be so all over again now.

Fusion - "Dedos" (4:12)
Carlos Franzetti - "Dedos" (3:42)
Review: Many of you may be aware of Totem's 'Dedos', a Uruguayan funk-rock classic full of bustling, B-boy ready drums, heady licks and throaty lead vocals. It was hugely popular in South America following its 1971 release and inspired countless cover versions, two of which are showcased on this must-have Vampi Soul "45". On side A you'll find Chilean combo Fusion's interpretation from 1975, a heavier Latin funk interpretation full of heavy percussion, jaunty organ stabs, fuzzy horns and quirky flourishes. Over on the reverse you'll find Carlos Franzetti's equally rare interpretation, a slightly more expansive and fleshed-out jazz-funk interpretation that first time round was only ever released in Argentina.

Impeach The President (3:42)
Impeach The President (dub version) (5:00)
Review: Given the anger in the United States surrounding the antics of President Trump, it was almost inevitable that we'd see a cover version of Roy C Hammond and the Honey Drippers' Nixon-era funk bomb "Impeach The President" at some point. It's a great cover, too, with Fysah Thomas providing a sassy, venomous lead vocal over a fine, horns-and-drumbreaks-heavy funk backing track courtesy of backing band The Get Down Underground. On the flip they completely re-build the track, re-casting it as an authentic dub reggae workout complete with delay-laden vocal and horn snippets and an all new rhythm track. It's rather brilliant all told and arguably even better than the A-side version.

Gusto (G&D edit) (6:00)
Review: Nine years after volume one landed in stores, Italian twosome G&D return with a fifth instalment in their occasional edit series. This time they've got company, too. Fellow Italian producer LTJ contributes a brilliant EP-opening edit - the languid, disco-meets-jazz-funk shuffle of 'The Rain Machine', where elastic bass and electric piano solos catch the ear - while Star Creature signees First Touch provide a smoother, chunkier and more synth-heavy rework of the very same track on side B. G&D fill in the gaps, first tweaking a sweaty disco-funk jam ('Ziddy'), before reworking a surging, techno-tempo disco stomper (the wonderfully camp 'Gusto').

Gnabolo (6:57)
Review: Bologna-based twosome G&B (apparently short for Gino and Dino) have offered up some of the best scalpel-style disco edits of recent times, with each of their three previous EPs receiving plaudits from both party-starting selectors and dusty-fingered record collectors. This fourth EP lives up to the high-quality of its predecessors, delivering three more hot-to-trot edits. The Italian pair begins via the triumphant disco-funk of 'Ori One', where rubbery bass, mazy electric piano solos, spacey synth chords and punchy horns catch the ear, before opening side B with a tidy revision of a boogie-era disco-soul gem ('Homecoming'). Arguably best of all though is closing cut 'Gnabolo', a superbly squelchy revision of a killer Afro-boogie number from 1982.

They have got a bottomless discography full of it and mostly on their own Galaxy Sound Co label. Here comes another addition to the cannon in the form of a pair of glorious jazz-funk nuggets, starting with 'Footin' It' by George Benson from his fifth studio LP back in 1968. 13 (Edits) (5:09)
Review: Galaxy Sound Co. hits 40 releases deep with yet another buy-on-sight 7". This latest entry into the Sample Series kicks off with an edit of 'Lovely Is Today' by Eddie Harris from his 1968 album Plug Me In. It's steeped in delightfully conversational saxophone with rousing chords dancing beneath in a swinging 60s fashion. A real classy gem. On the flip, 'September 13' by Deodato gets reworked and is from his self-titled jazz-funk album. This one is more funky and it's led by some big, proud horn stabs and silky drum rumbles enriched with great synths. Another vital 45 from this fine label.

Review: Galxtc take us back to the prime era of Brit funk here with a super slick new single for the young Space Grapes label. 'Life Is A Mirror' is an eleven minute workout which really uses the long playing time to take you on a trip. It's got a loose rhythm section with tight drum work, a peppering of percussion and darting synths that are cosmic and funky from the off. Review: Arguably one of the first ever dubplate labels, Sunshine Sound was home to limited runs of DJ-friendly versions throughout the 70s and early 80s. Most are long gone, but the "Unreleased Version" series continues to unearth the existing gems. Having previously dusted off a very special version of Candido, they return with three more exclusive rubs; a super-slinky boogie take of Taana Gardner's 1979 "Paradise Express", a thriving, drum-heavy take on the lolloping bass jam "Loosen Up" and the piano-slapping strutting "Hot Fun" where Dee Dee Sharp's vocals provide the ultimate sensuous showdown. Billy gets sweatier, the guitars get busier, the dynamic gets heavier and heavier... So heavy it rolls into a second part. Primed for the floor, it still hits hard 44 years after its release.

This one is a pair of tunes from Detroit soul singer and songwriter Willie Garner aka Billy Garner, Sugar Bilal, and several other variations. It is two versions of his debut single from 1971 on New Day and if you can find one of those original copies on 7" then you will also need to find over 500 quid to make it your own. Billy (Sugar Ray) Garner - "I Got Some"
Buddy Conner - "Half Way Loving"
Review: Long awaited reissue of one of the most in-demand slices of soulful funk to ever grace a turntable! Kicking off with an instantly recognisable break (stand up Gangstarr!), this gritty slab of down home groove is always a big hit on the dancefloor rasping vocals and a swirling organ over fat back drums and a sinuous piano line add up to create a true classic. Originals (on the New Day label) are tough to find, and even though Billy went on to score a top ten hit with 'Super Duper Love' (recently covered by Joss Stone), practically nothing is known about him. Nothing, that is, except the fact that he did indeed get some, and wants us all to know about it.

I've Learned My Lesson (2:55)
Don't Do What I Do (2:23)
Review: Nebraska-raised, California-based soul man Vernon Garrett was at the peak of his powers when "I've Learned My Lesson" was first released back in 1974. He'd scored a number of dancefloor hits at the tail end of the '60s via 7" singles on such labels as Kent and Venture Records, and by '74 was happily releasing material on the Watts U.S.A imprint he'd established as a vehicle for his own work. "I've Learned My Lesson" is arguably Garrett's strongest song of the period - a James Brown style heavy funk workout full of rousing horns, blistering drum breaks, jammed-out organ lines, gospel style backing vocals and, of course, his own scorching lead vocal. Since original copies are pretty hard to find these days, this reissue is more than welcome.

Review: Scorching soul heat from Atlanta: once-married couple Delia Gartrell and James Shaw (best known as The Mighty Hannibal) unleashed a short-but-singeing run of 45s around the late 60s/early 70 and here are two of their hottest moments. "I Must Be Doing Something Right" comes with a belting gospel backing chorus and a nagging hook you've definitely felt before. "Fight Fire With Fire" is even hotter; fuzzy electronic guitar, orchestral backing and a staccato chorus that brings floors to their knees, this is nothing short of essential.

But just in case, the Gay Philadelphians are a group from Trinidad & Tobago. They only ever released one album and these are two of the highlights. One storming cover and one steam-powered original. "Jo Jo Lo" is a shimmering slice of harmonics with an infectious hook and wonderful inclusion of chants towards the finale. Stunning stuff.

T Stands For Trouble (4:48)
Review: Those who've not checked Marvin Gaye's 1972 soundtrack to blaxploitation movie Trouble Man - a score that was heavily inspired by earlier works by his contemporaries Isaac Hayes (Shaft) and Curtis Mayfield (Superfly) - may only have heard the vocal version of the film's title track, a song that has featured on many retrospectives of the Detroit soul great's work. This "45" takes a different approach, showcasing two of the album's instrumental highlights. On the A-side you'll find 'T Plays it Cool', a synth-sporting slab of wah-wah-guitar-powered jazz/funk fusion blessed with some seriously good sax solos. Turn to the B for 'T Stands For Trouble', a more emotive and laidback number that features more complex horn arrangements, a head-nodding groove and more vintage synthesizer sounds.

DJ Jazzy Jeff - "A Touch Of Jazz" (4:46)
Review: In the pantheon of Marvin Gaye classics, "T Plays It Cool" is a steadfast favourite here at Juno Records. That intro, the stone cold drum fill, the monster saxophone, the subtle moog melodies, and the fact it was part of Gaye's superb soundtrack for Troubleman. A mark of its stature as a classic is the countless times it has been sampled, with Originals opting to line the flip of their latest 45 with Jazzy Jeff's chunky late '80s cut "A Touch Of Jazz". In his hands that classic lilting sax line and numerous other elements are included in a sampledelic fashion aimed at showcasing his scratching prowess.

It is a much sought-after jam which, if you can even find an original copy, will cost you upwards of three figures. This is classic beat work that draws on several vital hip-hop and soul sources to cook up all-new yet recognisable sounds. 'Still Dreamin'' is all leggy drums and thinking melodies with squelchy lines and warming bass that will prove irresistible once the sun comes out and even beyond the time it sets. 'Declaration' on the flip slows things down a little for some extra romance with whimsical leads and a distant cosmic glow.

Africa Con Bajo
Review: A side-project from some of the members of excellent Spanish funk band Speak Low, the Gigoletto Brass Band have come together to release two vibrant and lush songs on this excellent single. "Boogalow" is a delight, a live and organic sway through some classic mamba and boogaloo rhythms with a healthy helping of brass on top. "Africa Con Bajo" has a more 70s funk feel, with some riveting key changes and a quirky rhythm to really make it stand out.

Review: If tactile, colourful and synthesizer-powered boogie revivalism is your thing, you probably already own a clutch of singles on the admirable Star Creature label. It's bad news for your wallet, but you need the label's latest "45" in your life too. 'What About Us' is a label debut from former hip-hop crew member Gillies, who serves up a sparkling, emotive chunk of squelchy synth-soul rich in squeezable bass, memorable melodies, Star Creature's trademark early '80s synth squiggles (LFO trigger action aplenty) and sweet female vocals. Label regular E-Live provides the flipside revision, combining D-Train style bold synth riffs with a chugging, pitched-down Italo-disco style bassline and unfussy drums.

Review: Gipsy Power Band - what a name that is, by the way - debuts with aplomb here and mixes up a fiery sonic stew of flamenco rumba, rock and funk that captures the essence of a unique time in Spanish music. Formed in Madrid in 2022, the band originally paid tribute to "cine quinqui," a Spanish exploitation film genre, by performing tracks from its iconic soundtracks and other hidden gems from the mid-70s to early 80s. Drawing inspiration from artists like Los Chichos and Las Grecas, they lit up Madrid's stages with their vintage repertoire. Now, they've evolved to create original music and it comes in the form of these two songs.

Superbad (3:50)
Ma(r)l Sehen (3:16)
Review: Tramp Records has stayed close to home for this release, reissuing two killer cuts from the 1981 album "Mittwochs In Marl" album by Tyree Glenn Jr. While he is American - his father, Glenn senior, was famously Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong's trombonist - Glenn Jr had moved to Germany (where he still resides) around the time that the album was recorded. Lead cut "Superbad" is a genuinely heavy, full-throttle funk beast, with Glenn Jr doing his best James Brown impression over an insatiable groove and rousing sax solos. "Ma(r)l Sehen", on the other hand, is a much more breezy affair - an instrumental jazz-funk outing rich in dueling sax and electric piano solos.

Chimera (9:02)
Dere (5:05)
Makam Rasta (8:31)
Onbesli (7:07)
Review: Rocafort Records has excelled itself once again with this release, a four-track journey into "oriental jazz" by a quartet of international musicians helmed by young Turkish pianist, composer and arranger Gokhan Surer. He describes his style as "world, fusion, jazz", which is a neat summary of the exotic, evocative and emotion-rich material on offer. Check first the warm occidental jazz shuffle of "Chimera" before recoiling in wonder at the Turkish strings, double bass, hushed percussion and jazz-funk style electric piano solos of "Dere". Over on side B, "Makam Rasta" is an inspired fusion of reggae, jazz-funk and Arabian instrumentation, while "Onbesli" is a rolling fusion cut underpinned by hip-hop style beats.

Golden Boys - "Segura Na Cintura Dela (O Gaviao)" (2:38)
Silvio Cesar - "Beco Sem Saida" (2:21)
Review: Mr Bongo's essential Brazil 45s series notches up release number 89 via a blast of heavy dancefloor pressure that touches on both Brazilian funk and samba-rock. On the A-side you'll find Golden Boys' 1975 gem 'Segura Na Cintura Dela (O Gaviao)', an irresistible slab of full-throttle, orchestra-sporting, Hammond-heavy samba-funk marked out by strong group vocals and some superb musical arrangements. Over on the flip you'll find another classic from the same producer (Milton Miranda), Silvio Cesar's 1971 carnival masterpiece 'Beco Sem Saida' - an infectious excursion that found fame in the 2000s when Drumagick sampled it on 'Sambarock'.

Review: Yuki "Monolog" Kanesaka is a soul, jazz and r&b producer who is based between Boston and Tokyo, and Yuki "T-Groove" Takahashi is widely regarded as one of Japan's best remixes. Together they are Golden Bridge and they make timeless soul sounds steeped in magical musicianship and lush production. Elements of greats like Herbie Hancock and the Mizell Brothers loom large over these tunes which come from their eponymous 2019 album. 'Wouldn't Be The Same' opens in funky and stepping soul style with neat bass riffs. The B-side is a cover of Tony Etoria's 'I Can Prove It' that swells the heart with its upbeat grooves, yearning vocal and rich strings.

Lady Day & John Coltrane (3:25)
What's Going On (interlude) (0:45)
Review: Penny Goodwin's material is hard enough to come by in LP format, but the 7"s really are a sight for sore eyes. Luckily, we got Athens Form The North on our side, a stupendous soul and funk reissuer that has been delivering some serious heat over the last three years. "Too Soon You're Old" is a 1973 soul charmer, full of mystique and sensuality, the track moves slowly but with a great deal of funky swing to its bass. "Lady Day & John Coltrane" is a different kind of swinger, an uptempo funk ballad backed by flurries of organs and drum rolls, whereas "What's Going On" heads down a spiritual jazz tip to complete what is the most diverse soul single we've got to offer this week!

Tight Situation (with Reverend RA Yates - part 1) (2:39)
Tight Situation (part 2) (3:22)
Review: More raw funk genius from Kris Holmes: "Tight Situation" is a tight Hammond and guitar groove with just a mild drum break stroking the background to keep the time. Holmes' Yates persona takes over the A with demonstrative preaching power while the instrumental on the B gives you more than enough time to really lose yourself in the woozy washes of organ and endless bendy twangs. Praise worthy.

Sitting On The Bay Banger (4:17)
Fire Cracker (3:33)
Review: Last year Breakbeat Paradise inaugurated the Toxic Funk series of mash-ups, reworks and party-starting sample jams via a tidy seven-inch single from BadboE and Tom Showtime. Here the series returns with a similarly fiery "45" from Edinburgh-based DJ/producer Gramophone Soul. On side A he smashes together elements from soul classic "Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay", Beastie Boys raps and bombastic, loose-limbed breakbeats. The results are as effective as you'd expect (IE it sounds like a bona fide party-starter). Turn to the flip for "Fire Cracker", a tooled-up, stomping soul affair that stays closer to its soulful source material whilst also re-framing it a little for contemporary dancefloors.
