Bye Bye Baby
Cat: JAL 482V. Rel: 08 May 25
Bye Bye Baby (3:24)
Heartbreaker (3:55)
Review: Bristol beatmsiths and remixing duo The Allergies have been hot since '16, quietly pushing the buttons, twisting the dials and raising the throw levers on their resident soul console, Jalapeno Records. This time, though they've not revealed their sources, the boys have once again delivered on their promise to scour the waxen depths of Philly filler-upper funk, with 'Bye Bye Baby' panning a mammoth breaksoul gold rush, and 'Heartbreaker' offering a counterpoint in longing body percussions and "please don't leave me"s.

Move On Baby (3:12)
Are You Ready (feat Andy Cooper & Marietta Smith) (3:15)
Review: Jalapeno Records is one of UK's funkiest dance labels and is has been for ages. Bristol beatmakers The Allergies are just as funky and always serve up a massive dose of sunshine on their Latin flecked sounds. The opener here is 'Move On Baby' and is one of the best tunes the pair have ever laid down. Its packed with great samples, a high speed 60s spy theme rhythm and vintage rhythm 'n' blues vocals over energetic drum breaks. It is a textbook offering form this duo with all the big hooks and horns you need to carry you to the next level. B-side banger 'Are You Ready' is a stomping soul sessions with huge vocal work from Miss Marietta Smith.

Hypnotise (3:26)
Vamonos (feat Andy Cooper & Marietta Smith) (3:15)
Review: The Allergies are now well respected and much loved in their field. They have rolled out killer albums and EPs at a rate of knots and always with real funk at their core. This is the Bristol band's second sizzling single of the year on the Jalapeno label and it is another doozy. 'Hypnotise' is a really psychedelic sound with squelchy synths and big horns, Afro vocals, finger clicks and swaggering beats all sure to pump any party. 'Vamonos' (feat Andy Cooper & Marietta Smith) is a high speed and Latin flecked funk chaser with manic clapping, fast spoken-rapped bars and big horns.

Entitled To That (3:43)
Get Down On You (3:36)
Review: Bristol outfit the Allergies has enjoyed a hugely successful year so far, releasing a string of killer funk and soul sevens on Jalepeno Records. Astonishingly, "Entitled To That" could be their biggest single yet. Certainly, the title track is superb; a revivalist Northern Soul style stomper full of hazy horns, fuzzy guitars, sweaty drums and the kind of strong, empowered vocal that recalls some of soul music's greatest female singers. Wisely, there's a slightly more laidback feel about flipside "Get Down on You", where crunchy Clavinet lines wrap themselves around a snappy funk breakbeat. It's a fine tune, of course, but pales in comparison to the killer A-side. Regardless, this should be an essential purchase for funk DJs.

Dance Now (3:43)
Fade Away (feat Andy Cooper From Ugly Duckling) (2:59)
Review: Aside from releasing 2 albums for the imprint, Bristol's The Allergies have been a pillar of the Jalapeno label's success over the years, helping the label find its feet amid the ever-growing broken beat scene. The duo return to the catalogue with a classic helping of their very own breakbeat science, first up with the vocal-led charm of "Dance Now", a commercially-minded dancehall anthem that strays into pop and r&b with utter ease. On the flip, Andy Cooper features on the rap-pop hybrid vocals of "Fade Away", a feel-good party tune that is solely focused on getting you to move!

Main Event (3:37)
Buzzsaw (3:57)
Review: What a trip it's been for The Allergies; rolling from one killer album to the next, funk is flying from their HQ at a rate of knots. Here are two fine examples from their last LP Push On, both featuring their long-time friend and MC from Andy Cooper. Best known for his witty wordplay and character on Ugly Duckling records, here Andy gets to show off both sides to his expansive flow; "Main Event" is a chubby disco groove laced with mountains of funk, creating space for Andy's laidback-but-hypey charm. In perfect contrast "Buzzsaw" is a much sweatier funk jam allowing Cooper to get rapid and tongue-twisty in a way that only he knows how. Keep on pushing...

Tune Up Ska (reissue)

Tune Up Ska (3:16)
Time Is Ska Tight (Aternative take) (3:53)
Review: While this record looks and sounds vintage - like the majority of Original Gravity's output - it is in fact a revivalist, turn-of-the-60s style ska production from Welwyn Garden City's Neil Anderson. A-side 'Tune Up Ska' is particularly potent, with Anderson and his studio musicians serving up a classic ska groove (think walking bass, up-tempo rhythm and blues drums and tight horn blasts), onto which a variety of fuzzy saxophone and organ solos are layered. Clubs may not be open right now, but when they do, we can see it lighting up ska-loving crowds. Over on the flip, Anderson and company turn their attention (sorry) to Booker T & The MG's cut 'Time is Tight', reinventing it as a boisterous, horn-heavy affair featuring some superb trumpet solos.

Dreamtime Trance (3:46)
Dreamtime Trance Theme (4:12)

Dreamtime Trance Theme (Respectfully extended) (8:50)
Review: 'Dreamtime Trance' is a cult gem for those who like to dig deep, and Alston Koch is exactly that person. She is a Sri Lankan-born Australian musician and the mastermind behind the Kookaburra Connection project, a collaboration with Aboriginal musicians, and this track blends indigenous themes with a unique, game-changing beat and infectious groove. It's a pure dancefloor revelation and this reissue includes a new extended version with a longer intro buildup that adds depth to the track. On the B-side, the heartfelt ballad 'Midnight Lady' offers a contrasting mood that is perfect for after-hours relaxation with PiNa Coladas. Remastered and re-issued with the original artwork, this EP is a must.

Review: Beyond Jazz Volume 1 from Truth Manifest Records, spearheaded by Malik Alston, is a vibrant blend of jazz fusion, electronica and soulful dance music. This vinyl release marks the first in a four-part series, setting the tone for a futuristic sonic journey. Alston's production weaves together melodic landscapes with rhythmic precision, creating a soundscape that feels both intimate and expansive. Cherchez (vocal remix) (4:00)
Cherchez (Le B-Boy) (3:42)
Review: The Altered Tapes crew's sneaky remixes are amongst the finest around, as this latest must-check "45" proves. "Cherchez" has been doing the rounds for a couple of years digitally, so it's great to see it finally land on wax. It's a flip of Ghostface Killah's "Cherchez La Ghost", with the venerable rapper's verses rising above a weighty backing track crafted from hand picked samples of classic funk jams. Weighty and floor-friendly, it's the kind of bootleg revision that's guaranteed to get the party started. "Cherchez La B-Boy" on the flip strips out most of his vocals and instead chooses to base the action around fat funk breakbeats and an even more sizable bassline.

Altered Tapes - "The Break Down (Eazy Goes To Memphis)" (3:59)
DJ Platurn - "King Penguin" (Funky beats edit) (4:01)
Review: Chicago's Altered Tapes crew offer up their own unique take on a West Coast gangster rap classic with the A-side of this one on US label Heat Rock. It's the label's seventh outing and places focus on Memphis soul and funk territory. 'The Break Down' is a big, horn led jam with funk beats and crisp rhythms. Reverse this limited 7" to find Oakland's own DJ Platurn. He smashes out a drum heavy, break-heavy edit that pays homage to a cut and paste great. It's funky, filled with vocal samples and mad keys and packs real heat.

Heart Of The Groove (Ecstatic B-Boy remix) (4:27)
This Ain't No Game (Go! Go! Go!) (3:43)
Review: Heat Rock Records' latest double-dose of cut and paste madness is as incendiary as you'd expect, with both tracks adding elements of classic dancefloor workouts to fat beats and plenty of added percussion. Chicago's Altered Tapes handles side A, thrillingly re-imagining Dee-Lite classic 'Groove is In The Heart' by utilising more percussive elements (including a killer, cowbell-driven drum-break) from some of the tunes that the New York band originally sampled on their chart-topping house classic. B-Boys and B-Girls the world over will love it! On the flip, Bay Area native King Most combines the vocals from a Salsoul disco classic to a backing track that cleverly combines elements from a Ramsay Lewis style jazz number and a JB's-esuqe funk bomb.

Altered Tapes - "Heart Of The Groove" (Ecstatic B-Boy mix)
King Most - "This Ain’t No Game (Go! Go! Go!)"
Review: The tenth entry in the Heat Rock catalog direct-ingests a B-Boy vibe, through which Chicago’s Altered Tapes is heard rerendering a 90s diva classic - ‘Groove Is In The Heart’ by Deee-Lite - enhancing it with heavy percussion and a massive breakdown. Then, Bay Area’s King Most flips a Disco acapella, infusing it with a unique blend of jazz and James Brown-style breakbeats. A must-have for collectors; copping doubles is highly recommended by the label.

Tatli Dile Guler Yuze (2:41)
Hababam (2:13)
Review: Altin Gun are the hottest property to come out of Istanbul in the last ten years. Fact. Led by Jacco Gardner, the 7-piece outfit specialise in the deepest, most wild-eyed psych funk available at the moment and this was clearly visible from their recent debut LP, On. A similar narrative continues here, one which resonates so well with the traditional sound of 70s Turku-funk from pioneers such as Erkin Koray or Baris Manco, and there is, quite simply, something very honest about this band. O this new 7" from the banging Bongo Joe we have "Tatli Dile Guler Yuze", a seductive vocal groove filled with aptly trippy guitar funk and Merve Dasdemir's sublime voice waving in the distance, and the quirky sounds of the instrumental cut "Hababam" - making this one of Bongo Joe's best EPs to date, and another proof-point for Altin Gun's quality. Highly recommended.

I Can't Stop Loving You (3:07)
Review: You'd be hard pushed to find a better label than Hawaii's Izipho Soul when it comes to heart aching soul sounds. As it fast approaches its 100th release it is Jesus Alvarez who lands on this new 7" with two tunes taken from an album that has not knowingly been released and never maddest past the promotional test pressing on Columbia. Both just are exceptional and are from the same recording period as 'Sooner or Later', a 7" on Polydor, with Alvarez being well known at the time for his Sylvia Robinson connection and productions and performances on The Willow Band's 'Willowman' and The Nicky Newarkers 'Woman'.

Plata O Plomo (5:08)
Reality For Nuthin' (3:58)
Review: Original Gravity's very own identity-invention Nestor Alvarez returns with yet another two new and hot Latin funk productions. 'Plata O Plomo' takes its namesake from an old Spanish adage, literally translating to English to mean "silver or lead", implying that the recipient of the phrase must either accept a bribe or lose their life. In keeping with this heavy-handed theme, the track is punchy and surface-tense as a bullet yet to exit the barrel. Meanwhile, 'Reality For Nuttin' gets at an equally nihilistic and existential theme, all while finding joy in the conundrum of life with huge rhythm guitars and pop-out pianos and brasses.

Kinky Afro Cuban
Review: Like all material released on Original Gravity, this tidy two-tracker from percussionist/band-leader Nestor Alvarezn and producer Neil Anderson sounds like it could have been recorded decades ago but is in fact brand new. It first appeared earlier in the year and has now been granted a second pressing, this time on coloured vinyl. A-side 'Midnight in Havana' is a heavyweight Afro-Cuban treat, with roaring horn lines and energetic organ lines leaping above a weighty, low-slung groove piled high with Latin percussion. The pair get cheeky on the flip, re-imagining Happy Mondays' classic 'Kinky Afro' in an easy listening salsa style, complete with bi-lingual lead vocals and sweltering trumpet solos.

With a mesmerising flute lead and dynamic jam sessions, the track exudes a captivating energy that feels like a theme song for the city's bustling nightlife. The infusion of Cuban soul adds depth and authenticity to the music, immersing listeners in its rich cultural heritage. On the B-side, Alvarez offers a creative cover version of the Happy Mondays' 'Kinky Afro,' reimagined with a Cuban twist. The fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythms and the iconic melody of the original song results in a fresh and exciting interpretation that showcases Alvarez's versatility as a musician. Review: We've run out of ways to describe the Breaks & Beats series of functional, floor-friendly re-edits, though by now everyone should know what to expect, namely light-touch reworks of classic funk and soul jams that extend the drum breaks for easier mixing. The series latest missive begins with a must-have rework of Tony Alvon & The Belairs' "Sexy Coffee Pot", a rare-as-hen's-teeth 1969 B-side that wraps rhythm and blues guitars and firing horn lines around one of the greatest drum breaks of all time. Review: Love Touch Records has a devilishly simple game plan: to release brand-new revivalist boogie, electrofunk and synth-powered soul songs on seven-inch singles. Here, the label's very first release from late 2019- which, incredibly, sold out simply through social media hype - finally gets a wider release. It's well worth checking, because it's a terrific slab of smooth, spacey, talk box-sporting slab of synth-soul from vocalist Amalia, label regulars The Precious Lo's and modern boogie wizard Brian Ellis, who provides a killer synth solo rich in wavy, LFO-trigger action. Over on the flip T-Groove provides a "Smooth Mix" - a more thickset take built around warm chords and one of the most squelchy synthesizer basslines we've ever hard.

'Golovoy Kachai (Shake Your Head)' finds the Russian group locking into a bouncy stride, all nimble guitar chops and sweet organ, keeping laid back but without any slack. 'JB In PSKOV' clearly doffs its cap to the godfather of soul, laying down a groove Fred Wesley would be proud to call his own. It's the B-side from that two-track EP that is reissued here on its own 7", with an instrumental version on the flip. This first single on their self-styled "DIY label" Cosmonaut Records is well worth checking. A-side "More Mess On My Thing" is driven forwards by laidback, loose-limbed drumming, rubbery bass guitar, layered hand percussion, a call-to-party female vocal and the twin attractions or rising horn lines and snaking sax solos. "Keepin' On" explores similar sonic territory, with the band providing more ear-catching horn lines and an urgent lead vocal that will worm its way into your subconscious in no time at all.

Vetson Androy - "Mavandeza" (3:55)
Joajoby - "Tarantasy Maitso" (3:30)
Review: You can rely on the Sofrito label to unearth the most daring of dance music from the most obscure corners of the earth. This latest instalment lands on Madagascar's shores, a stunning landscape with relatively little known about its music from the typical Westerner; as usual, though, we are pleasantly surprised by what we discover on this totally killer two-tracker. The sound is called Salegy, a style originating from the island's North-Western quarters, and that evokes fast 6/8 rhythms accompanied by steely percussion folds and tribalistic chanting: "Mavandeza" is a deep and mystical song performed by the Vetson Androy outfit, who were famous proponents of the sound at the height of its popularity in 1978. The B-side is from tenders later, and Joajoby's "Tarantasy Maitso" is another glorious slice of vocal-led percussion in the island's loose and spiritual style. Unmissable.

I'm Comin' Home To You
Whole Woman
Review: Australian soul singer Stella Angelico has been at it since 2012, and now, signaling yet more to come, we hear a fresh 7" documenting her work with Cookin' On 3 Burners, a Melbourne-based band whose specialism is Hammond organ funk and soul. On the A we've got 'I'm Comin' Home To You', a nimble pop-soul of impeccable quality, expressing the joy of a long-awaited return. The B-sider, 'Whole Woman', is more of a monologue and slow jam, expressing the joy of staying fully embodied and grounded.

Broke Down Piece Of Man (2:55)
Four Walls Of Gloom (2:12)
Review: Soul4Real has gotten 'soulful for real' with this third outing, coming through in the form of 2 previously unreleased gems from US band The Anglos. This is some pretty niche gear, what with the band having only put out a handful of 7s back in the 60, so it feels like a special occasion to have some new material from them on our shelves. These tunes were apparently destined to land on the Botanic imprint back in the day, and are famously produced and engineered by the great Jerry "Swamp Dogg" Williams, which is why they have a certain roughness that is rarely heard on other soul records. "Broke Down Piece Of Man" is a fast, beat-heavy number with a psychedelic edge that reflects the state of mind back then, while "Four Walls Of Gloom" takes the gospel tradition as its main ingredient, offering a wonderfully uplifting midtempo rocker for the heart and soul.

Review: Montreal producer and keyboard maestro Anomalie offers a full-MOT servicing of funk-jazz on 'Velours', a choice track that presaged his 2018 EP 'Metropole'. Born of a chilled bedroom jam, the first iteration of this track was uploaded to YouTube in 2017, and utilised stacks of Yamaha pianos as well as sleek, sexily designed sample pads. Anomalie provides a rich, honeyed set of chordophonal can-cans over nothing but a swung backbeat, bringing seemingly boundless phonic fruition from little nutrient. Now the song hears a full reproduction and repackaging in vinyl form via Devins 7s.

Tattletale (part 2)
Review: The saying goes that no one likes a tattle tale, but any self respecting funk collector would be hard pressed to give up on the chance of owning this latest dinker of the same name from the esteemed Antibalas collective. Composed by crew member Victor Axelrod, "Tattletale" has been a long term fixture of live sets by Antibalas and it's great to see them finally commit it to seven inches of wax. Laid down during the recording sessions for their last Daptone long player, its spread across two parts on this seven and is a sublime slab of Ethiopian funk that sees Antibalas doffing their collective cap to '70s pioneers Mulatu Astatqe, Wallias Band and Mahmoud Ahmed.

Review: 'Anything Goes Vol. 7' the latest vinyl release EP from Rollover Edit Service, a subsidiary of Anything Goes, is back. Delve into the Italian music scene of the 70s and early 80s with four meticulously edited gems; all four versions here are billed as originals, credited to contemporary producers' hands (Black Pomade, Pablot, etc.) yet are heavily built around each respective sample. Our highlight is the hard-won, twangy B4, 'Prima O Poi Ti Prendero'.

Hombre (Voodoocuts rework) (4:00)
Review: Matasuna Records' latest must-check reissue comes courtesy of obscure Mexican outfit Apache, who released a handful of singles and a couple of albums of fiery Latin funk in the mid 1970s. A-side 'Liberate', which first surfaced on the band's 1976 album Del Bumpin Al Horno, is a find slab of hot and humid funk built around rising horn arrangements, low-slung grooves and excitable group vocals. Over on the flip, regular Matasuna contributor Voodoocuts delivers an excellent rework of 1975 cut 'Hombre', which was originally written and arranged by Apache's trumpet player Ermesto Haros. Voodoocuts adds a few of his own samples and musical touches here or there, embellishing the original groove and instrumentation with enough contemporary funk breaks oomph to delight those who like their beats tight, fat and floor friendly.

Review: Comprised of Uhuru Dance Band members Ebo Taylor and Gyedu-Blay Ambolley, The Apagya Showband only delivered a handful of releases but they're all worth digging out. Mr Bongo have started the excavation with these two 1974 vintage licks; "Tamfo" is concentrated uplift with big horns and an unescapable highlife guitar lick. "Mumude" is a deeper, drum-heavy jam that switches suddenly with the help of big organ splashes and sermonised spoken word.

Review: Destination '77: Nigerian troupe The Apostles lay down their third album Banko Woman. And, with it, this widescreen vibe excursion that's been a go-to for Afrobeat diggers since it was released on Love Day 40 years ago. "Banko Woman" is a firing, energetic funk jam layered with vibrant levels of instrumentation that gradually strip back at points to let you feel the raw tempo of the groove. "Faith Luck & Music" is at once both more bluesy, thanks to the sliding, melting guitars, and spiritual, thanks to the traditional rhythm and chords. A rare and long-awaited reissue.

Oshi Onwu
Review: Released with the help of Voodoo Funk's legendary African music digger Frank Gossner, this offering of vintage Nigerian afro funk from Academy Records has been officially licenced and remastered with glorious results. The Apostles were best known for their string of folksy hits in the mid 70s and early 80. However preceding this period the band made more funk orientated guitar-driven monsters, of which two tracks are presented here with this reissue of "Onye Akpa" and "Oshi Onwu". Both cuts are deep fried in simmering organ and distinct rhythm guitar licks; two wonderful vocal afro groovers for fans of Soundway and the like.

War (2:53)
Review: Rare German funk from '78, Black Pearl have unearthed something incredible here. "Hi Baby Out" only ever saw private press, which is crazy considering how insanely funky it is. Hitting with a Nigerian-style funk with big backing vocals, highlife guitars and far-away horns, it's an instant call to the dancefloor. "War", meanwhile, has never before been released and was found by chance on its original master tapes. Listen to the juicy slap-bass and swinging drums and you'll agree it's beyond crazy that this didn't receive a release - it's criminal. Look up Apotheke's story, too, if you have time - it's fascinating.

The Power (3:49)
Review: Israeli funk powerhouse The Apples have a fiercely unique approach to the timely tradition of heavy grooving live musicianship, and they lay it down in no uncertain terms on their long awaited return to Freestyle Records. On the A side they're having a whole lotta fun covering Blur's 'Song 2' in a raucous style, bringing an almost rave-ready energy to the track and pouring barrel loads of their own personality over the version. 'The Power' nods plenty to the roots of funk as well as its descendents - just check the turntablism cutting its way through the sweet sax and slick guitar chops.

Review: The Apples are a successful live hip-hop/funk band from Israel, and "Thang" is a driving psychedelic rock based immersion with relentless drumming and funk brass. On the flipside "Powder" its less hectic as live sounding hip-hop drums instigate a low slung groove with DJ scratch effects/samples, double bass and brass.

The Apples - "Attention!"
The Quartertones - "Caffeine" (DJ Format's Getaway version)
Review: In anticipation of the forthcoming follow up to the hugely popular "Stay On The Groove" compilation, Freestyle drop another couple of sublime modern funk nuggets on 45. Beaming in directly from Israel, The Apples give us the insanely catchy "Attention!" - lifted from their debut album of the same name, this is an essential slice of dancefloor funk. Updating the classic funk sound, The Apples drop heavy instrumentation over a looped up break, alongside some fresh cuts and scratches. Rumoured to be a live experience not to miss, we hope to be able to bring you more from this energetic set. Over on the flip, Canada's finest The Quartertones drop another hefty chunk of funk with the highly charged "Caffeine". Stepping up on remix duties is the UK's very own DJ Format who applies the brakes and beefs up the beats with his trademark funk sound. Sounding like the theme to the worlds funkiest car chase, it's hard to imagine this not killing it on the dancefloor!

Review: Wow. Fortuna have really thrown a curve ball. There is very little out other on Arbanel Tsvia but the music speaks for itself. Both cuts are furtive fusions of East meets West as we shake away to dramatic Salim-Sulaiman style cascading melodies before being thrown in Charlie Parkier style jazz madness and big swing band action the size of 10 Glen Millers. A unique listen, there's not one dull moment throughout.

Review: Aside from reissuing a whole heap of glorious boogie material from the 1980'sm People's Potential Unlimited also have their own distribution roster, and Cosmic Chronic is right up there waving the flag for the US stable. To kick-start 2016, we have a four-tracker from newcomer Arcade Odyssey, and as you'd expect, they're every but as funky and lo-fi as those instrumentals from back in the day. "Spring Yard Zone" kicks off with massive electro baseline, tropical melodies, and a hazy vibe, while "Beautiful Forest" breaks the beat down and goes Eastern with its synths. Flip the plate and you'll be confronted by the huge, stabbing bassline and fast beats of the utterly gnarly "Neon Night Riders" - easily the gem of the lot - and wound down thanks to the gentler, more tame waters of "Port Town". Sick.
