Review: Budde & Osti of 100 Records presents an experimental "playground" that offers listeners a unique perspective on their work. The sizzling six-track EP blends jazz and house and features experimental highlights from the Trash Archives, which is a collection of 99 tracks available for free on Bandcamp. All pieces were recorded live in the studio utilising, on the whole, analogue gear that best shows off the duo's raw and unfiltered creativity. From the opening jazz dance of '40' to the closing jazz-funk-techno of '57' this is a beguiling collection.

Review: Little is known about this early 1970s psychedelic soul group from Germantown, Philadelphia. However, their record was recorded in 1969 and released in 1970 as one of two releases on Michael Nise's Round Records (Nise Productions INC). Now, remastered from an original pristine vinyl copy in collaboration with Nise Productions, this marks the first official reissue of the album. The group's music captures the essence of the era's soul and psychedelic influences, making this a long-awaited release for collectors and fans of vintage soul.

Review: The 4 Jades are a mysterious soul and funk group from Ohio, who first released these two stunning tracks in 1972 under the label Cin-Town Records. Written and produced by label owner Wilbert Longmire, who also features on guitar here, he joins the likes of William L Johnson for a loving stylistic homage to the likes of James Brown and Curtis Mayfield here. Both 'Gee, How I Miss You' and 'Doon-Chang' express the sultrier and waltzier respective ends of the Jades' sound; don't let their name fool you, as they're anything but 'jaded', with the former track flaunting their lithely harmonic acapella abilities and the latter reflecting a more sexually tense atmosphere, one that hardly assumes a thing.

Review: For Record Store Day 2025, Bloom Japan presents a lovely 7" from the 45TRIO, who reimagine Minnie Riperton's classic 'Inside My Love.' This reinterpretation delivers a lush, jazz-infused instrumental take that honours the original's unique sensuality while introducing a fresh, soulful groove for modern 'floors. 45TRIO's tasteful blend of live instrumentation and vintage tones helps breathe new life into this timeless gem while the B-side offers a stripped-down version perfect for late-night spins or sample hunters. This is one to pick up and drop during those loved-up moments.

Review: 45trio share their first release for Bloom Musi, this time around covering the stone-cold classic 'Am I The Same Girl', co-written by Eugene Record, of Chi-Lites fame, with Sonny Sanders, for singer Barbara Acklin. In '92, Swing Out Sister covered the album, but this latest rendition hears 45trio's Momoko Suzuki and Reiko Oda lend it a sweeter style by comparison. This dainty, vivid young soul morsel is a fine-tuned fine tune, one you'll undoubtedly want to continue humming along to long after its central, unmistakable hook - transposed up at least two octaves here - has played out. The B-side includes a special instrumental version, no less, released under the name of Young-Holt Unlimited - this one brings the hook line to an organ part, demonstrating the written song's potent and versatile instrumental repertoire.

Review: Ace's introduces the Soul Harmony label with a thrilling discovery from Golden State Recorders. The 87th Off Broadway, hailing from Seaside, California, recorded a series of tracks in April 1972, with arrangements by Los Angeles' Rene Hall. These sessions, featuring the group's self-penned songs, remained unheard for decades. 'Instant Replay is the final track from these sessions to be released, following previous funk releases on Ace's BGP label. The group later evolved into Welfare, who recorded 'What About The Child' (under the name Gold) for the MRC label in 1977. The intricate harmony and high-quality production of 'Instant Replay' have already garnered praise on the Lowrider scene. The music of Larry Sanders has seen the soar among collectors, capturing the essence of a summer romance with his lush, harmonious sound.

Review: On the long-serving deep house label's latest reissue, Large Music takes us back to 1997 and one of the most beloved (and these days, hard to find) EPs by Washington, D.C duo 95 North (AKA Doug Smith and Richard Payton). As it did first time around, the EP contains four contrasting versions of 'Jazz Ascension'. The EP-opening 'Red Soul Mix' lives up to its name by wrapping breezy flutes, syynths, pianos and spoken word samples around a bumpin' bassline and classic-sounding US deep house beats, whilst the 'Red Dub' delivers a stripped-back and groove-focused take on the same musically expansive mix. Over on side two, the slightly darker and more bass-heavy 'Hard Dub' compares favourably to the then contemporaneous work of fellow Washington, D.C-duo Deep Dish. A handy, spoken word 'Washapella' rounds of an essential reissue.

Review: You just cannot miss with this superb label which is now up to release number 33 in this series. And the latest is a golden-era classic featuring legendary mic men A Tribe Called Quest and top soul boy Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Band. The A-side features the track taken from A Tribe Called Quest's Love Movement album so is packed with their signature beats and bars. On the B-side, you are treated to the funky original sample source from Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Band which delivers a raw, infectious groove. If you love classic hip hop and funk, and why wouldn't you, this is a great pairing.

Review: You have to liov these 45s that elegantly bridge the lineage between the original and the sampled while also highlighting hip-hop and r&b, showcasing the seamless interplay that defined the 90s. On Side-1, 'Back & Forth (DNA Edit)' gets a UK remix treatment from the legendary DNA crew, amplifying the track's smooth groove and youthful energy, silky vocals and laid-back charisma shining even brighter under the remix's refined production.. Side-2 features 'Don't Curse (DNA Edit)', transforming the posse cut into a sharper, more rhythmically dynamic experience as playful, feelgood verses and the crew's lyrical finesse are elevated by the remix's polished beats.

Review: LA label Milkcrate Mondays is back with more slick contemporary hip-hop and r&b sounds, this time in the form of a split 7". Abel takes care of the opener with 'Flex'd Up', which has slow, seductive and silky drums and synths making for a sunny sound that is topped with a gorgeously heartfelt r&b vocal that swoons and swoops effortlessly. On the flip, Netwerk's 'Horns Of A Feather' has a duster and more classic boom-bap hip-hop beat that's low in the mix, with muted horns and another aching vocal really finishing it in style. Two different vibes, both are excellent.

Review: The fourth edition in Original Gravity's Down In The Basement series, which gathers instrumental soul and swing cuts onto worthy 7" slabs, resounding the fervent 1960s decadal gap in which mod reigned supreme. With juleps flowing and kneecaps knocking, Abramo & Nestor bring newfangled electric pianistic swing with 'Dig It!', while a twinned "hit it!" injunction is heard from Floyd James & The GTs on the reissued 'Work That Thang'; James' voice is tubed and speed-delayed to terrific effect, achieving a sprung intonation. Curtis Baker brassifies the bonanza with the lively 'Fried Fish 'n' Collard Greens', while The Native Yinzer's exiting excitation 'The Hip Strip' quilts our ears with a mnemic, down-feathery Hammond-breaks bit.

Review: After years of silence following the loss of Sonny Knight in 2017, former Lakers members Blair Krivanek and Cy Pierpont return with their new project, Ace Box Shift. The duo have made plenty of standout contributions to the soul revival scene before now and here they debut on Secret Stash Records with another pair of fiery instrumental cuts that work exceptionally well for DJs and dancefloors alike. They find Krivanek's jazz-infused guitar work meeting Pierpont's pounding rhythms with raw, funk-driven results that make for a bold, high-energy comeback that pays tribute to their roots while also moving things onwards.

Review: A new take on a Jonathan Richman classic from 1977 which has lit up clubs for 45-odd years, especially during the punk era. The track's infectious rhythm has inspired various reggae remixes but now it's getting a fresh cumbia twist. Cumbia and reggae share a common groove, making them a perfect match for DJs to mix and this one was recorded in Lima by Pancho Acosta, founder and guitarist of Company Quinto, who transforms the track into an upbeat cumbia gem. The flip side features Acosta's 'Carnaval de Jujuy' blended with Money Chicha's modern take on Peru's fuzzed-out chicha sound.

Review: Jonathan Richman's 'Egyptian Reggae' has been setting discerning dancefloors alight since its release in 1977, during the golden era of punk. Known for its infectious rhythm, the track has seen a few reggae remixes over the years. However, it was time for something freshia playful yet respectful cumbia twist. Both genres share a certain groove, making them a perfect match, and it's easy to imagine DJs weaving these sounds together in their sets. This new take on 'Egyptian Reggae' has been recorded in Lima by Pancho Acosta, the founder and guitarist of Company Quinto, and one of Peru's finest cumbia guitarists. Acosta brings his expert touch to the track, transforming it into an upbeat cumbia gem. On the flip side, we're treated to one of Acosta's own originals, 'Carnaval de Jujuy', recorded by Austin-based future cumbia outfit Money Chicha. The song blends Peru's fuzzed-out early chicha sound with Money Chicha's unique, modern interpretation of the genre, delivering a fresh, captivating cumbia vibe.

Review: Two tracks, originally unreleased when they were recorded in the late 70s and only surfaced later on the 1993 Ace compilation Greatest Performance, which showcase the exceptional range and emotional depth of this New Orleans artist. Johnny Adams' soulful gem, 'It's You Baby, It's You' along with 'Think About You', finally sees its debut 7" release. On Side-A, 'It's You Baby, It's You' is a positive and uplifting soul anthem. Driven by a strong horn section and a touch of funk, the track radiates joy and energy, with Adams' signature powerful vocals anchoring the vibe. His voice soars, wrapping the listener in its warm embrace. Side-B delivers 'Think About You', equally stunning, featuring big strings that elevate this beat-ballad to stunning heights. It matches the A-side's intensity, with Adams pouring his heart into every note. The arrangement complements his vocals perfectly, offering a lush, emotional experience. This release gives fans a chance to rediscover one of New Orleans' finest, adding a classic touch to the Soul4Real catalog.

Review: Admin's 'Mystical Circles 02' delivers two vibrant tracks that embody the essence of dancefloor-ready disco and funk. Review: A hugely exciting and thoroughly danceable new 7" from Florence Adooni, blowing any other artist who could even remotely hope to stake a worthy claim to contemporary highlife out of the park. Following up her debut single 'Fo Yelle' on Philophon, the Ghanaian Frafra Soul singer returns backed by an eight-member troupe, made up of young talents from the highlife scene of Kumasi, Ghana. 'Uh Ah Song' and its inverse counterpart 'Otoma Da Naba' are slick, clean and joyous daytime jaunts, with the former track lyrically meditating on familial and childhood themes while effortlessly pinning down a difficult-to-maintain-for-most uptempo highlife backbeat and improv. The B-side, meanwhile, pays tribute to the supreme terrestrial creator central to Adooni's native Frafra community, and centres on a heptatonic electronic, nigh acid riff and lo-fi texture with a "je ne sais qoui" that, in our view, renders it the tune of the year so far.

Review: A strikingly unique dance music project from Nagasaki producer, DJ and sound director Keisuke Yamazoe, Aflex Combo has always been an impressive project, straddling several EPs stretching back to 2002 - and all centring, in the artist's own words, on heavy funk beats and obscure jazz and Latin grooves. Jazz Roomn Records now release his cover-remix of the underground club classic 'Hibaros', originally by B&G Rhythm (Donny Beck & Steve Gutierrez, featuring Bobby Lyle). Several unusual time signatures modulate across its A-sided, dancey groove - don't be fooled, things need not settle into a 4/4 repetition to be worthy of a ball - whilst B-sider 'Something Special' lets things slack a little more, letting several, live-recorded drum loops rest on top of one another, while a sort of glockenspiel/celeste-esque instrument tinkles over the top. Something special indeed.

Review: African Dubplate delivers a thrilling selection of classic and rare Afro jams, reworked and pressed with a disco single flair. Though the mysterious artist behind the project remains anonymous, it's clear the source material hails from the rich well of African rhythms. Each track brings fresh energy to timeless sounds, crafted with the dancefloor in mind. Be sure not to miss out as this limited stock release is sure to fly off the shelves. Grab yours while you can!

Review: Whereas most record label prefer to revel in the idea of the finished project, a smaller cohort still prefers to play up the idea of the cutting room floor, the dubplate, the manuscript, the demo. Whilst dubstep might've revived the dubplates trend for a more contemporary listener, US imprint Disco Dub Demos (how apt) know all too well that of the earliest forms of this "rawness fetishism" in music emerged from disco. Here the label-born moniker African Duplate lays down four ultra-utilitarian tools that shoot squarely for the essence of - they name it - 'Afro Disco'. On the B-side also comes a worthy, somewhat haunting flip track, 'Come On & Groove It'.

Review: Ahead of his second upcoming album For Today, Etnean artist Agosta presents two unreleased tracks on a new 7" featuring Giulia La Rosa's poetic vocals. These gems blend chill-out electronics with Balearic vibes that are perfect for the brighter days ahead. 'Serenade' offers a sophisticated mix of elegant dance and relaxed atmospheres with inspiration taken from artists like Felipe Gordon and Nutty Nys. Its fluid groove, gentle percussion and dreamy synths create an immersive intimate vibe and both of these tracks evoke sunset serenity with real warmth in the vocals.

Review: Religion, and specifically gospel music, always played a key part in shaping the sounds and emotions of easy house music. It is clearly going to have just as much impact on this new label God Iz Enough which debuts with an EP of the same name from Tomi Ahmedeus. His style on the opener is to lay down raw and dusty beats with an early Windy City feel and infuse them with evocative, guttural gospel vocals that really bring them to life and make them inescapably emotive. 'The Rise Of The Guttersnipe' strips things back a little and brings a shuffling tech vibe with some glistening melodies while 'Ms Ludus' is a gorgeous ambient closer.

Review: Many Hands is a fresh label helmed by Jona Jefferies and Kava that here kicks out an eclectic EP with four tracks from various members of its musical family. Dan Aikido opens with '0800 TXT4 Herb,' a smooth fusion piece that builds a laid-back groove, blending fretless bass, jazzy keys and soulful vocals all reminiscent of Rare Silk's 'Storm.' Ernie Ruso's 'Stroke It' offers slow, sensual r&b infused with P-funky wah-wah effects while DJ Nomad's 'African Boy' brings upbeat pop house next to funky organ and a female reggae MC.Jefferies' closer 'A Change Will Come' samples Dr. Martin Luther King Jr with a rave-inspired beat and soulful piano. Cracking stuff.

Review: This is one of those raw soul sounds that never goes out of fashion, and thankfully neither does it often disappear from availability. It features two r&b classics, the dancefloor-ready 'Last Night' and the soulful 'Don't Break Your Promises', both originally released on the Rainbow label in the UK and a long-time bastion of Aitken's mastery of blending Jamaican and British influences. The opener draws from The Mar-Keys and Georgie Fame, showcasing r&b's imprint on Aitken's style. 'Don't Break Your Promises' is a Milson Luce cover that gained fame in Jamaica before inspiring numerous versions.

Review: Excursions in Gwoka vol. 2 is another adventurous outing for the Beauty & the Beat label that takes them ever deeper into the gwoka scene of Guadeloupe. it is the celebrated carnival outfit Akiyo who are in focus here with two tracks taken from second and supremely hard-to-find long player, Mouvman, in 1993. 'Deboule' is a real heater with bustling drum funk and chatting tribal vocals all run through with synth wizardry from Marie-Galante Jacques-Marie Basses. 'Blo' is just as steamy and intern with percussion, whistles and big beats all making quite the impact. Breakplus adds a London twist to 'Deboule' while CW adds a cosmic air to 'Blo.'

Review: 'Salty Road Dogs Victory Anthem' by Alabaster DePlume, composed live during a Vienna soundcheck and later recorded in London, emerges as a brilliant show to the resilience and creativity of the group. This track was birthed amidst the intense schedule of a demanding tour following the success of DePlume's album Gold. The piece opens with a robust, swirling saxophone, leading into a triumphant four-minute crescendo. DePlume is joined by a dynamic ensemble, featuring Rozi Plain on bass, Momoko Gill on drums, and Conrad Singh on guitar. Together, they craft a rousing homage to the sheer act of living, celebrating the victory of existence. This anthem resonates with a profound message of self-permission and triumph, regardless of external recognition. The music, much like his sentiment, is bold and unapologetic, encouraging listeners to embrace their victories, no matter how small.

Review: Rediscover a treasure from the Dade Records vault with the reissue of Arnold Albury & The Casuals' 'That's A Bet,' brought back to life by ReGrooved Records. This analogue-remastered 7" highlights a key track from 1970, recently featured in the popular series 'Sex Education.' The flip side, 'My Baby Don't Understand,' is equally stunning, showcasing the soulful essence of Miami's vibrant music scene. Arnold Hoss Albury, a brilliant keyboardist, played a pivotal role in shaping the Miami Sound, contributing to iconic records by artists like James Knight & The Butlers and Betty Wright. This re-release offers a rare opportunity to own a slice of musical history and experience the soulful brilliance of Albury & The Casuals.

Review: The Alex Santos Orchestra is a self-described "orchestra" orchestrated for the express purpose of sanctifying one Alex Santos' lifelong love for jazz and Latin music. Following the much loved 'Alex Santos Y Su Orquesta', 2021's next step in Latinizing said quasi-conceptual ensemble, we've now landed in the project's live ambit. 'The Alex Santos Orchestra On Tour' captures just two live highlights from a much more recent outing (given the mystification surrounding the project, this may or may not have happened). Whatever the case, these recordings span both potentialities, retaining something of a highly-strung Hammond organ come upfront-drumkit drama on the B-side, 'Mr Clean', and an equally stirring version of the main theme from 'The Godfather' on the A.

Review: Bristol beatmsiths and remixing duo The Allergies have been hot since '16, quietly pushing the buttons, twisting the dials and raising the throw levers on their resident soul console, Jalapeno Records. This time, though they've not revealed their sources, the boys have once again delivered on their promise to scour the waxen depths of Philly filler-upper funk, with 'Bye Bye Baby' panning a mammoth breaksoul gold rush, and 'Heartbreaker' offering a counterpoint in longing body percussions and "please don't leave me"s.

Review: The Allergies' latest offering is a double dose of sample-heavy goodness, a testament to their cratedigging prowess and knack for flipping vintage sounds into dancefloor gold. 'Knock Me Off My Feet' is a glorious reimagining of a late-sixties Southern soul 45. The original Motown-influenced arrangement is already a potent brew, but The Allergies inject it with a booster shot of fat drums, beefy bass, punchy percussion, and soaring horns, propelling it into another dimension entirely.
