AkizzBeatzz - "I'm An African" (3:29)
Lego Edit - "Sahara Adventures" (Lego re-edit) (4:58)
Review: AkizzBeatzz and Lego Edit join forces to mutually reinforce what they both do best: making disco edits and reworks of classic funk, soul and Afrobeat, and occassionally offering up the odd original track. The 12" 'African Groove' is a downtempo and weighty meditation on what it means to hail from the continent, with Akizz' A-side 'I'm An African' playfully laying down a diasporic big beat excursion, replete with regional instrumentation and defiant political vocal samples. Lego Edit's 'Sahara Adventures', meanwhile, works a chugging beat around a central algaita line.

Nestor Alvarez - "Burning Spear" (3:40)
La Machine D'Argent - "Burning Spear" (5:37)
Review: This is another reissue of a record that remains an ongoing favourite. Original Gravity delivered again with the original pressing featuring two unique versions of 'Burning Spear'. Nestor Alvarez opens with a lively, Latin-inspired rendition filled with fluttering flute melodies, raw drum beats and vibrant dancing keys that radiate sunny energy. On the flip, La Machine D'Argent takes a more cosmic approach, smoothing the vibe and layering spaced-out sounds for a dreamy, immersive journey. This release showcases Original Gravity's knack for reimagining funk with flair by offering two distinct yet equally good takes on a timeless groove.

Review: Edric Connor's 'Manchester United Calypso' is a timeless masterpiece that captures the spirit and joy of football. Originally released 70 years ago, its legacy continues to resonate with fans, heard echoing through the terraces of Old Trafford and beyond. This reissue, featuring Lord Kitchener's 'Manchester Football Double' on the B-Side, is a delightful treat for fans of vintage calypso and Manchester United alike. The 7" vinyl format, coupled with Stan Chow's stunning artwork, makes it a real treat. Deixa Passar (5:42)
Deixa Passar (Gerardo Frisina rework) (4:33)
Ile (4:32)
Ile (Gerardo Frisina rework) (4:08)
Review: Five years on from their debut collaborative EP 'Frisina Meets Toco', modern Brasilian dance artists Gerardo Frisina and Toco return for a second faceoff, this time with liaising artist Luzia Dvorek serving as ringmaster. Centring on samba-infused jazz and deep house with mystical and folk influences, "deixa passar" translates from Portuguese to "let it pass", though the mood is certainly not outright passive. This delectably quartered slice of carnivalesque dance music is rather rich in sonic papaya juice, charting sustained vocal contrasts between Toco and Luzia against smoky and furnaced beats. Aperient track 'Deixa Passar' leans heaviest on languid piano, whilst dozier mists emerge on the B-side in the form of 'Ile' and its rework by Gerardo Frisina, bringing pan flutes, strings, breathy vocal counterpoints, cabasa shaker, and subtle bass undercurrents.

Caspar Leo - "Tom Tom" (4:54)
Lego Edit - "El Safari" (5:16)
Review: Samosa Records returns with Afrikano Vol. 3 which is a lovely Afro-themed, genre-blending EP featuring four standout tracks from trusted artists. Kicking things off is Vincent Galgo's 'African Rebel,' a 125bpm fusion of horns, driving rhythms, and Afro-pop bass. Frank Virgilio follows with 'Mistress,' a jazz-infused mid-tempo groover, packed with guitar riffs, organ stabs, and hypnotic bongos. Newcomer Casper Leo delivers 'Tom Tom,' a tribal delight featuring Kora guitar and melodic Marimba. Closing the EP is Lego Edit's 'El Safari,' a sultry Afrobeat banger that grabs hold and doesn't let go.

Tangent Edits Vol 1
Tangent Edits Vol 1 (12" in die-cut sleeve)
Cat: MRB 12062. Rel: 11 Oct 24
Leo Basel - "Quelle Drole De Vie" (Nick The Record & Dan Tyler rework) (7:31)
Love Isaacs - "Surprise Surprise" (Joao Gomes & Dan Tyler Are Predictably Delayed rework) (5:43)
Rick Asikpo & Afro Fusion - "Let's Get High" (Nick The Record re-edit) (12:36)
Review: As Tangent, one of London's cherished underground institutions, marks a decade of unforgettable nights, it does so with a meticulously curated compilation on Mr Bongo. The new release is more than a celebratory gesture; it's a sonic anthology reflecting the essence of a decade spent at the heart of the city's underground scene. Curated by Tangent's own John Gomez and Nick the Record, the compilation presents a blend of rare and dancefloor-ready tracks that have defined their parties over the years. This isn't merely a collection of past hits; it's a celebration of the edits that transformed these tracks into Tangent anthems. Alongside remastered reissues, the CD edition includes three exceptional edits by Nick, John, and Dan Tyler of the Idjut Boys, each crafted with the kind of attention to detail that only years of club experience can bring. Nick's collaboration with Dan Tyler on Leo Basel's 'Quelle Drole De Vie' breathes new life into a 1987 remix, honing in on the standout elements of the original. The result is a vibrant, French boogie-infused track that promises to elevate any dancefloor. John and Dan's rework of Love Isaacs' 'Surprise Surprise' offers a cosmic twist on 80s electro-funk, extending the grooves and adding a highlife touch that enhances the track's dancefloor potential. The compilation's crowning piece is Nick's edit of Rick Asikpo and Afro Fusion's 'Let's Get High'. This 12-minute reimagining takes the energetic climax of the original and expands it into a frenetic, cosmic journey, showcasing synthesised jazz-funk in its most exhilarating form. This release is not just about revisiting old favourites; it's about acknowledging the transformative power of edits and the unique role Tangent has played in shaping London's underground music scene over the past decade.

Deny (feat Irasema Gall - Redux) (3:35)
Review: La La Lopez's debut single, 'You Can Call Me Rose,' marks her impressive entry on SOLA Records, offering a soulful, modern r&b response to Thee Sacred Souls' classic 'Can I Call You Rose.' Hailing from Albuquerque, New Mexico, La La brings her unique blend of influences, from Mariachi and Rancheras to Soul and oldies, creating a sound that transcends borders. Recorded at SOLA Studios in Los Angeles and OLAH Producciones in Veracruz, this record shows her versatility. On Side-1, 'You Can Call Me Rose,' exudes soulful warmth, while the flip side, 'Deny,' is a vibrant Latin Pop track with English lyrics and rich Latin percussion, perfect for the dance floor. La La's music resonates deeply with her life experiences, a quality evident in her past works and future releases with SOLA Records. 'You Can Call Me Rose' has already garnered praise across generational audiences, affirming La La Lopez as a musical force to watch. Now available on 7" vinyl!

Delirio/Contigo En La Distancia (Medley) (4:56)
Hijo De Mama (4:31)
Review: The Cuban boleros of the 1950s and Nuyorican street soul of the 1960s always embodied a timeless Caribbean romanticism in the midst of New York City's urban landscape. La Triunfadora's debut album captures this sense of revival with experimental, psychedelic arrangements that revitalise classic tunes with fresh interpretations. Their debut 7-inch on Names You Can Trust honours Cuban bolero maestro Cesar Portillo De La Luz with lush orchestration and vocals by Candace Camacho and Benjamin R. Julia. The B-side reimagines Ralfi Pagan's 1969 Latin soul gem 'Hijo De Mama' by blending analogue warmth with a modern twist.

Review: Last time we heard from Cleon and Jazzy Pidjay, otherwise known as Last Bongo In Paris, was back in 2013 on EDR...and here they are back on the same label, and out the bottom of a hat. Similarly to last time, "Bahia Swing" manages to conjure the right balance between jazz, funk and something a little more tropical, a sound and panache that is carried through to the following four cuts of juice. Our favourites are "Ritmo Loco" for its Latin energy, and the delightfully broken "Jarumba". If you're looking for something a little jazzy and saucy, but that pushes beyond the genre's natural confinements, this is it.

Rita Lee & Tutti Frutti - "Agora E Moda" (4:18)
Pete Dunaway - "Supermarket" (4:55)
Review: Mr Bongo's Brazil 45's series brings us two Brazilian classics: Rita Lee & Tutti Frutti's 'Agora E Moda' and Pete Dunaway's 'Supermarket'. 'Agora E Moda' from Lee's 1978 album Babilonia is a psychedelic disco-boogie groove highlighted by squelching guitar licks, funk drums, and cosmic vocals. Rita Lee, the former lead singer of Os Mutantes and a key figure in the Tropicalia movement, left a lasting legacy upon her passing in 2023. On the flip side, Dunaway's 'Supermarket' is a rare groove/AOR gem with a standout bassline, swaggering guitar, and lush strings, showcasing his talent as a composer and multi-instrumentalist. This release celebrates the enduring influence of Brazilian music.

Sea Gull (4:37)
Review: Several years before Uzi Kinrot, we were lucky enough to attend a cultural exchange, of sorts, between Lithuania's burgeoning electronic scene and Israel's fertile alternative music community. The results were staggering, and in addition to presenting the Balkan state as an epicentre of leftfield dance, it also made a strong case for the Middle East as a hotbed for the kind of music makers destined to score some Quentin Tarantino or David Lynch movie. Back up to date, and Les Dynamites, whose reputation has long reached beyond their Jerusalem hometown, have returned to emphasise the latter point. Uzi Kinrot is a groove-packed double-A side that feels alive with energy, perhaps thanks to the single-take recording process. It's twangy, psychedelic, nostalgic and yet utterly timeless stuff that yearns to be heard on a beach while you hide from the heat of afternoon sun.

Review: Some six years (give or take a few months) on from the release of their superb debut album Psychedelic Disco Cumbia, self-styled 'NYC tropical supergroup' Locobeach are back! This time round, they've treated us to a genuine rarity: a rarely spotted double seven-inch EP. All four tracks have, apparently, been extensively road-tested in their live sets and become, in their words, "fan favourites". They begin in stellar fashion via a head-nodding, cumbia-powered cover of Cure classic 'Close To You' (it's genuinely great - one of the best covers we've heard for a while), before imagining a suitably tropical spy chase on the urgent and percussion-rich 'Idea Desesperada'. On 45 number two you'll find the cheeky cumbia-soul-meets-yacht-rock cheekiness of 'Isabella' and the surf-flecked, high-octane tropical fun of 'U.S Marshall'.

Review: This long-overdue 7" reissue breathes new life into a rare Latin funk treasure from the golden era of the genre. The A-side, 'Together People (Pamoja Watu),' delivers a fiery blend of James Brown-style grit and Manu Dibango-inspired groove, complete with driving rhythms and infectious energy. On the B-side, 'It's Your Thing' reimagines the Isley Brothers classic as a bold instrumental, packed with Hammond organ flourishes and raw Latin funk swagger. Originally a Bobby Marin studio project featuring Chico Mendoza and members of Ocho, these tracks are essential for DJs and collectors, preserving the spirit of New York's vibrant Latin music scene.

Review: Los Disco Duro are all about offering up "analogue synthesizer interpretations of Latin classics" and have been doing so now for almost a decade, most often on the Disco Bas label in the US. Their reworks and reimaginations know no stylistic bounds as price here with an intergalactic-sounding take on kiddie-disco fav 'Macarena.' The vocals are reusing through a talk box, the vamping chords and drums are fat the synths pixelated. 'Musica Chiquita' is then a fresh deep house cut with starry eyed synths and planning bas that is, frankly, brilliant.

Here they return with La Alicia bringing vocals heat on this double A-side. Leading with a digital dancehall flip of Vico C's classic proto-reggaeton banger, 'Bomba pa' Afincar,' it's got that island vibe locked down. On the first of two new 45s, the label focus on Los Sabios and Los Eliceos, two obscure monster Latin funk psych groups who recorded in the mid 1970s. Packed with a wowwing lead guitar focus and a vintage psychedelic baste, Los Sabios' 'Trip To The Moon' takes its name from the first ever sci-fi film, and aptly lays back while playing through a distinctive Latin pulse and swarthy funk dust-cloud. The A-side track is a journey into the unknown, pulsating with infectious grooves that feel like they've been beamed in from another galaxy. On the flip side, Los Eliceos deliver 'La CabaNa,' a more grounded yet equally entrancing tune, driven by tight percussion and warm, melodic guitar lines. Both tracks offer a fresh take on traditional cumbia, making this release a must-have for collectors and dance floor enthusiasts alike.

Luchito - "The Harlem Bugalu" (3:48)
Joaquin Marquez - "Mala Mania" (3:40)
Review: More heat here from Original Gravity with 'The Harlem Bugalu' from Luchito and Joaquin Marquez. This is a 7" that soon transports you to boogaloo paradise with its feverish Latin grocers and non-stop drum funk. The A-side is laden with spoken words, zippy percussive sounds and mad bongo bubbles with lashing of horn-led exuberance. Flip it over and you will find the slightly darker and more menacing energy of Joaquin Marque's 'Mala Mania'. Get your shake on and drop this one this summer for swift dancefloor explosions.

Luchito - "Siente Mi Ritmo" (3:12)
Nestor Alvarez - "Idespierta Y Mueve!" (2:48)
Review: Continuing their mission to retrouve genres across the spectrums of Latin funk and cumbia, Original Gravity welcome back founding favourites Luchito and Nestor Alvarez with yet another sonic vitamin D pill, presaging the warmer days to soon come. Both sides tap into that rich 60s and 70s Afro-Carib crossover sound, with, at least on the face of it, no studio trickery in earshot (though careful listens reveal the method behind the majesty). Anyone with a weakness for brass-led Latin burner will melt on contact with this one.
