Got To Get Your Love (Muro Diguma edit) (5:21)
Got To Get Your Love (Muro Diguma edit - instrumental) (4:15)
Review: The latest set of Diguma Edits sees dusty-fingered Japanese digger-turned-re-editor DJ Muro take his scalpel to 'Got to Get Your Love' by Clyde Alexander & Sanction, a suspenseful and action-packed 1980 number from producers Peter Brown and Gary Davis. Muro first cuts down and compresses the ten-minute vocal version, making merry with the track's unusual combination of classic disco grooves, showtunes-style orchestration and eccentric vocals. Over on the flip he does a similar job on the slightly different instrumental take, in turns showcasing the track's crunchy guitars, warming electric pianos, spacey synths and grandiose orchestration.

Kylie Auldist & Skinny Dipp - "Back For More" (3:36)
Kylie Auldist & Lincoln Room - "Party At My Place" (3:27)
Review: "I'm like a monkey with cocaine" goes the vocal on the opening tune here but that conjures up images of quite a riotous scene. In fact, the music is superbly seductive, cool and calm, with low slung disco funk, lush cosmic chords and a laidback, almost aloof vocal all soothing the soul and making for some nice dance floor intimacy. After that collab between Kylie Auldist and Skinny Dipp, Kylie hooks up with Lincoln Room for 'Party At My Place' which has an odds school instrumental disco feel embellished with low slung grooves and lovely claps.

Brenda Boykin - "All The Time In The World" (4:05)
Step Three - "A Dream" (feat B More - instrumental) (5:51)
Review: This split release offers two laid-back tracks from the depths of Brazil. On the A-side, Brenda Boykin (a jazz vocalist with a rich, creative voice which was nominated for a BAMMY Award in 1997 for Best Vocalist) delivers a soulful cover of Louis Armstrong's seminal 'We Have All The Time in the World,' the theme for George Lazenby's one-time portrayal of James Bond as well as a real karaoke favourite. The B-side features Step Three's 'A Dream,' a funky instrumental track with B. More which became a dance floor favourite following its 1993 release. Pressed on red 7" wax, this one beautifully captures some timeless Brazilian rhythms.

Can I Be Your Squeeze (2:31)
Take Care Your Homework Friend (2:27)
Review: The unequalled Soul Jazz label is serving up some monster funk this month and they don't come much bigger than these two cuts from Chuck Carbo. Opener 'Can I Be Your Squeeze' is a super catchy, break heavy and funk fulled party jam to destroy the floor. Written and produced by the celebrated Eddie Bo, it comes with big drums from New Orleans stick man James Black. On the flip is the ever so slightly more mellow but not less dance 'Take Care Your Homework Friend.' These have long been hard to find and now come pressed nice and loud on fresh wax.

Review: Ten Lovers always manage to find a perfect sweet spot between jazz and house on the music it serves up. This new various artists' effort proves the point well: Marcello Cassanelli lunches the trip with groovy and nodding bass synths and airy vocal cries on 'Fantasia.' Zarenzeit then sinks into a bubbly groove with killer drums and sun-worshiping synths before Stefano De Santis drops some excellent broken beast on his squelchy synth workout 'Song For George D.' Future Jazz Ensemble takeoff into the cosmos and Caruso gets romantic on 'Vestimenta'.

Review: 'One of a Kind' expands Cool Million's sound and marks a new direction towards a more diverse boogie funk style ahead of a much anticipated new full length which is due to arrive next year. This latest dancefloor hit features Seest, a Danish soul singer and longtime collaborator, while the tune blends funky, jazz-infused boogie that draws inspiration from artists like Earth, Wind & Fire, Kool & The Gang, and The Crusaders. It boasts powerful horn arrangements, rich chord changes and driving basslines with an up-tempo power-funk groove at its finest. This single serves as a great taste of the album to come.

Review: Japanese talent DJ Koco aka Shimokita is a hardcore 45rpm devotee. They are his chosen tools as a beat-juggling DJ who can do logic-defying things with his grooves. He is a regal on Bloom and already dropped serious heat in January with 'World Famous'. This time he is back with a fresh take on 'Made In New York' which is a 1985 classic by renowned Brazilian funk and jazz pianist Tania Maria. He brings his signature hip-hop flair and creativity with his trusted crew, 45trio, and enlists the dynamic saxophonist King TJ (DA-Dee-MiX) to elevate things further.

Review: The Japanese label Sedgwick is back with a second summer sizzler, this time in the form of a split between iconic DJ and producer Ransom and Spankie Hazard. Ransom goes first with his epic 12-plus minute 'This Is The "B" Side Plus Bonus Beats & Cuts' which is all about the body-popping drum breaks, percussive shakers and lively vocal cries. Review: It's time to touch base with Errol and Alex Rita's Touching Bass here as the small but already great-sounding label hits release number eight with this fine Babylon Shuffle release. All six tracks from Last Nubian and Geneva's Sweet Fruity Brunch blend the sounds of inner city London with deep house and broken beats, starting with the party vibes of 'Call Yu Out'. 'In Da Morning/Shaka' (feat Achante) then has lithe and wispy synths shimmering over metallic broken beats with great vocals adding soul and 'Mango In Da Parish' is a b-side highlight with its beautifully delicate house drums keeping the dancefloor afloat next to jazzy flutes.

Review: Mad About Records is back with another essential double dose of Latin funk with this limited edition 7" from Los Sonidos De F.M. and Sola. 'Tema De Los Adolesentes' kicks off on the flip with brilliantly lively samba keys and blasts of big horn energy next to more slinky and seductive lines. It's a true steamy dancer full of sex appeal while Sola take a different approach on the flip with 'Tabu.' This one is low slung and mischievous with its prickly rhythms and wet cymbals. The Spanish vocal is delivered with power and flair and backed by brooding harmonies that add extra weight.

Review: The gloriously off-the-wall On The Corner imprint is back, ready to tear it down with its predictably unpredictable chain of artists who reside firmly in the 'ODDS' space. Much like the previous releases, this is a mixed bag of outernational goodness and jazzy sensibilities, offering a release which truly blurs the lines of the extended 'dance' space. Our top picks in running order: Black Classical's "JeJe" is one of the most innovstive uses of percussion and organ that we've heard this side of year, Sam Jones' "Group As Salaam Construct" is probably THE definition of off-kilter thanks to its lopsided beat groove, and "Simba" by Daisho takes the whole polyrhythmic equation onto the minimal end of the spectrum. Quirky, refreshing and absolutely recommended new strains of floor music.

This one comes on translucent re wax and brings together a blend of seasoned and fresh talent including Hotmood, Shalvoy, Diana Swan, Musta, Adam Nova and Uptown Funk. These tracks do a fine job of reflecting the label's dedication to innovation right from the off. Musta's 'Fresco' is a nice jumbled percussive disco funker, Hotmood's 'Ayaaa' rides on some electric synth waves and Shalvo's 'Dancin' is a smooth cruise for the midnight hours. Review: Fresh from dropping another essential seven-inch with his regular Sound Combo band, Misha Paniflov has joined forces with fellow multi-instrumentalist Shawn Lee for a string of collaborative singles. This "45" sports two genuinely impressive cuts, each full to bursting with quality live instrumentation. It opens with 'Sigmund Jahn Bossa', a superb fusion of late 1960s library jazz (think Roy Budd's score for Get Carter and you're in the right ballpark), bustling bossa-nova and spiralling psych-funk. Over on the flip the pair continue to deliver lounge, influenced, tongue-in-cheek thrills via the cheap, Sideman drum machine rhythms, tumbling guitars, elongated Hammond organ chords and hazy backing vocals of 'Aquaria'.

Review: Stefano Cantini is a well-known saxophonist in the Italian and international jazz scene and Alexander Robotic is an equally respected talent in the world of electronic music. They now come together for a great new single that combines both of their backgrounds and skill sets. 'Francocco' is an elegant and fluid mix of authentic jazz sax and moody, melancholic chord with shuffling drums and weighty bass. It's one to bring great looseness to the floor. 'Frigiococco' is a more bright and driving version and 'Afrococco' then has a sensuous edge in the sax and funk in the basslines. Last of all, a Bottin remix brings a cosmic touch.

Desired Unity (5:45)
Review: While Moodymann has an undeniable claim to being the world's premier jazz-house fusionist - though we doubt the Detroiter would think of his sublime dancefloor productions that way - the style was arguably pioneered and perfected by French producers such as Ludovic Navarre AKA St Germain. Paris may not be the jazz-house colossus it once was, but there are still new acts emerging - amongst them S Pazz, a debutant trio who here make their bow on Pont Neuf Records. Taking cues from DJ Gregory's Africanism project as well as homegrown jazz-house of old, the threesome flit between slowly unfurling, Cinematic Orchestra style numbers ('Passing Times'), picturesque, deep and melodious nu-jazz/organic house fusion ('Quali Kalimba'), Tourist-era St German (the frankly brilliant 'We And The Sea') and more exotic, percussion-rich jazz/house fusion ('Desired Unity').

Sam & Kitty and Johnny Sayles how up to deliver a stirring performance on 'I've Got Something Good' which is driven big, big raw horns and their heartfelt harmonies and rich vocal chemistry. They very much embody the passion of classic soul duos and on the flipside, 'I Can't Get Enough (Of Your Love)' exudes raw emotion and a sleazy, guttural vocal with a mix of orchestral horns and more intimate melodies over hard-edged and banging funk drums. Together, these tunes capture the essence of vintage soul and funk.

As with the other recent Sato/Sasaki releases he's tweaked, Ryuhei offers up two edits of 'Okuribushi', a bustling affair that combines traditional Japanese vocals and instrumentation (and specifically the sound of the shansin, a three-stringed instrument from Osaka) with driving drums that sit somewhere between celebratory disco and the jazz stylings of Max Roach. The superior version - for us, at least - is the full vocal A-side edit, though some may prefer Ryuhei's instrumental take.

Naturally, her take is authentic to the style, sonically, while naturally leaning towards the squelchy electrofunk and '80s soul sound she's been cultivating for some time. It comes courtesy of Washington, D.C-based modern soul maestro Eric Scott, whose expansive sound is slick, soulful, polished and pleasingly emotive. For proof, check the smooth, soulful positivity of A-side 'Peace Bomb', a plea for global peace whose musical backing - simmering (synthesized) orchestration, tactile vocals, undulating Hammond lines, languid drums and his own delicious bass - is almost perfect. He offers up something similarly smooth - if a little more groove-based - over on the flip, where 'Reach Out For Me' is as loved-up as they come.

Review: The assumption of quality that comes with Patrice Scott records is never let down, and so it goes on this latest refined transmission from his Sistrum label. 'For My People' is a sharp and snappy jam with some of the warmest bass you're likely to hear all year, but it's also smoothed out by mellow keys that provide the starry-eyed magic so intrinsic to Scott's sound. 'Let's Dance' is equally chill, albeit with a nagging swing you won't be able to resist bopping to, whether on the floor or elsewhere in your world. 'Abstract Jazz' offers up something a little more playful as Scott lets the beats come in a little crooked and the keys go darting off into intriguing harmonic configurations, but it's still sophisticated and elegant at its core. 'The Detroit Track' rounds the EP off with another sweet bumper which speaks to Scott's legacy as much as the city he hails from.

Review: This 15th slab of wax from the Ltd B/Lbl crew is another doozy with Scruscru cooking up a richly emotive house sound. Henna Onna features on a bunch of these including the first three, which take in the breezy, bay melodic deep US garage of 'Drifting', the jazzy broken beats of 'Mindset' and the sunny breaks of 'Touch'. Elsewhere there are more loungey excursions like 'Loqsh' and funky Rhodes workouts like 'Drive For Gave'. 'Merci Shat' (feat Jehan & Henna Onna) is a perfectly smooth and dusty closer to round out a great EP.

Disco Thing (2:56)
Your Love (3:03)
Review: It was way back in 1977 when disco collective Seaquence made their debut on Aidqueen Records, a tiny, independent label based in their home city of San Diego, California. That debut, a delightful but extremely hard to find "45", has long been in demand amongst deep disco collectors, hence this timely reissue on Athens of the North. The real killer is A-side 'Disco Thing', a tight-but-freewheeling chunk of disco-funk piled high with alternate male/female vocals, loose-limbed drum-breaks, punchy horns, swooping strings and squelchy synth sounds. Original B-side 'Your Love' is a deeper and far sweeter affair - a traditional flipside slow jam that's as tear-jerking as it is effortlessly soulful.

The Sensational Disciples - "My Own Way" (2:24)
Elder William Smith - "His Voice" (3:02)
Review: The reverend of many aliases, Kris Holmes returns with two more woozy slabs of raw funk. Following "Bumps In The Road" earlier this year, both "My Own Way" and "His Voice" are captured with full feeling and atmosphere from the room with warm lo-fi brilliance. The former goes for more of a straight-soul feel while the latter is gutsy piece of gospel funk that will could convert the baddest sinner in seconds. Lord have mercy.

Morning Song (5:35)
Review: Special guests Tamar Osborn and Myele Manzanza feature on this debut EP from September Sun. It is a brilliantly evocative offering that brings to mind warm summer morning and hay sunsets with lots of tender sax lines, florid fleets and Latin-flecked percussion. 'September Sun' is a widescreen affair with delightful piano keys dancing next to expressive flutes that flutter way up high. 'Morning Song' is just as freeform and new age in its hippie overtones., while the rhythms here are a little slower and more pensive. Gorgeous stuff.

Martelo A Galope (4:19)
Review: Here's something particularly spicy to liven up your party good n' proper. Uluru dedicate themselves to carrying inventive edits and bootlegs on 45, and they've come up with a proper pearler with this new drop from Shaka. It won't take a deep-digging detective to work out the source material on the A side, but you won't quite expect the maverick approach Shaka takes in cutting up this funk classic with a glitchy twist. The Brazilian beatsmith has a more relaxed approach on the B side with a cool version of 'Martelo a Galope', giving you a record of two distinct but highly usable halves.

Review: Shaka Loves You and you will love Shaka once you're getting deep down on the dance floor to these characterful funk cuts on the Bomb Strikes label. The a-side 'Boogie' features Fullee Love delivering some nice rhymes over a picky beat with funky riffs and raw drum work. It's got some big horn action and then on the flip side comes 'Get Down,' which is a big funk instrumental with hip-swinging claps. There are plenty of soaring horns to get those hands in the air and this one is well versed in the classic sound while also adding something fresh.

Review: Originally released in 1986 on the LA based label Majicaa Records, here comes a much warranted official reissue and remaster of Shakeena's super good bubblegum lovers rock jam 'I Bet You'. Shakaman was a reggae master dummer who shows off his stick skills here on a searing groove that is fleshy and warm. The vocal is a sunny, aching one that brings the soul and is sure to dissipate any bad vibes on your day. Flip it over for the stylish dub version for a different kind of ride.

Old Digger (Jim Sharp edit) (3:56)
Review: For the 20th release on the Berlin-based Dusty Donuts label, they have tapped Londoner Jim Sharp again, who was responsible for their very first release back in 2014. On 'Feelin' Good', Sharp and DJ Goce sample J Dilla track on a lush track, with a late night smoky jazz bar kind of vibe throughout. The sound on B side track 'Old Digger" was made famous by Kanye West however Sharp's edit here injects thumping drums, vocal stabs and a different era of Jazz swing.

Review: The Dust Donuts crew return with a reissue of another delicious 7"s of perfectly aged funk and hip hop sounds. Canadian-born, London-based DJ Jim Sharp was at the controls for this third volume and first up his edits 'Rubber Band.' It has big woodblock hits and brash horn leads with a percolating rhythm that rises and falls in dramatic and emotive fashion. The flip is an edit of a classic hip hop Joint, 'The Light', with the aching original vocal left in place next to lush piano chords and dusty golden era beats.

Review: The Record Store Day 2023 specials are coming thick and fast and thankfully the quality seems high this year. This 7" in particular is a crucial one for any Southern soul fans. It is a mega rare one from the vast JB Records vaults that due to popular demand finally gets an official reissue. It's not one that appears often in original form - the last copy fetched over 400 quid several years ago now. And it's easy to see why - the Baton Rouge crossover soul of Cynthia Sheeler's 'I'll Cry Over' will melt your heart and lift you off your feet all at once.

On & On (1:46)
Classic (2:02)
Beach (1:42)
That Jazz (1:50)
Review: Fresh from making his first appearance on the party-starting Resense series, Shin-Ski (real name Shinsuke Taoka) delivers a rare, four-track "45" featuring a bunch of previously unheard productions from his jam-packed hard drive. He starts as he means to go on with 'On & On', a head-nodding hip-hop club cut crafted from bits of an old soul floor-filler, before smothering another toe-tapping beat with mazy electric piano solos on 'Classic'. Over on the flip, 'Beach' sees the Japanese veteran wrap a boom-bap beat and funky bassline in flanged guitar licks, while closing cut 'That Jazz' more than lives up to its descriptive title. Loose, groovy and musically rich, it should please anyone who loved Guru's classic Jazzamatazz productions.

Review: Japanese producer Shin-Ski turns his considerable skill to a pair of next level jazzy remixes of rap classics. First up is 'We' which has classic sunny chords and walking basslines overlaid with some fresh hip-hop bars and filled in with lush melodic curlicues and strings. 'Her' is deeper, with sax lines this time accompanying some classic melodic refrains and dusty bars. This, we're told, is a one time only pressing in limited quantities so if you want it, do not sleep.

Review: There is very little info out there - well, none that we can find - about this new Siffleur label or the artists behind it. Siffleur is the word for a male professional whistler but surely has no bearing here as these are two world-flavoured disco jams. 'Pino' is as tropical as they come with darting synths and Spanish (maybe) vocals over lush synth solos and gliding disco grooves. 'Adriano' ups the ante with big horn stabs and chunky drum funk. It's the sound of a bustling dance floor at 1am, with plenty of drama and heart.

Labi Siffre - "I Got The" (New New Super Heavy Funk edit) (4:25)
Banbarra - "Shack Up" (New New Super Heavy Funk edit) (3:28)
Review: As soon as you drop the needle on this one you will recognise it as a sample source for one of the biggest hip hop tunes of the last 30 years. That tune was of course by Eminem, but Jay-Z and Miguel also used it in their own work. It is originally by veteran UK soul sensation Labi Siffre and features sweet beats and a rugged riff. On the flip, Banbarra's 'Shack Up' brings some raw funk vibes with chugging drums and belting vocals, and both of these versions are New New Super Heavy Funk edits by the Soopastole label's in-house namesake.

Review: The cultured creative minds of James Simonson and Blair French reunite for this new Realities Remix EP on MotorCity Wine which was, in original form, recorded by Simonson in hotel rooms across Europe and the Americas while touring with soul legend Bettye LaVette. As such it takes in myriad global influences as well as evocative field recordings which get reworked in style. Blair French adds his touch with three remixes, firstly the anthemic 'Realities (Projector Remix),' then the more dance-driven 'Elektronolux Overture (Sunday Remix)' and the lush and downtempo 'Hannah (Remix)' featuring violinist Sonia Lee. Two originals 'Realities' and 'Elektronolux Overture' also appear on vinyl for the first time and sound superb.

Seal My Heart (4:24)
I Love You (4:24)
Review: A short name hides a long story - Detroit-born Chad Hughs graduated from the same high school as Diana Ross, going onto become a multi-talented musician as well as a teacher and composer. The fourth release from cd exclusive vinyl pressers Jai Alai, collectors can now own this unique 7" containing two completely different sides of Sir Wick from his two albums. A side's title track 'Seal My Heart' contains the vocal talents of Sedalia Marie, with layered vocals and a baseline that makes this pure soul song feel deeply cinematic. The B side has been decades in the making, selected from a fully orchestrated musical in the works since 1996, finally being recorded and completed in 2017. These two tracks are deeply sentimental ditties of doting young love, and now two rare soul ballads from a musical luminary are available for the first time on a 45. What better soundtrack to date night than these?
