100Hz - "Kinetic Wasp" (7:06)
Charonne - "Vice City" (5:27)
Cobert - "Spaceghetto" (5:55)
Charonne - "Formule Stardust" (6:17)
Review: Domenico Rosa and Riccardo's Imprints label has regularly delivered the goods since making its debut back in 2013. Predictably, this multi-artist affair is also rather impressive. French twosome Charonne is arguably the star of the show, delivering two tidy tracks: the bouncy and far-sighted "Vice City", where '80s synth-funk style motifs and acid-funk electronics ride a bustling groove, and the similarly-inclined, elastic tech-house-funk of "Formule Stardust". Elsewhere, turn-of-the-90s survivor 100Hz delivers a fine chunk of woozy deep house/funky techno fusion and Cobert delivers some spacey and chunky, mid-set tech-house. In other words, all four tracks are playable and worthy of your attention.

Styrax Special 4
Styrax Special 4 (yellow transparent vinyl 12")
Cat: STYRAXI/STYRAX J. Rel: 09 Dec 11
154 - "Daze" (3:25)
Damon Lamar - "Rising Sun" (7:57)
Claro Intelecto - "Signifier" (6:19)
Lowtec - "Dat America" (6:48)
Review: Styrax's alphabetized Specials series reaches its fourth volume (or Styrax I / Styrax J to use the correct parlance) with four typically sumptuous examples of archival house. 154's delightfully fuzzy "Daze" opens proceedings, which will cause much misty eyed reminiscing for anyone who indulged in the 2004 Delsin released album Strike it first appeared on. Alongside it, Damon Lamar's luxuriously paced "Rising Sun" is borrowed from Tetrode Music, its intoxicating swirls of kaleidoscopic textures every bit as potent as when it first surfaced. The flipside tracks are naturally in a similar vein with some 2003 bounciness from Claro Intelecto complemented by "Dat America", Lowtec's 1999 jam for the Playhouse imprint.

48v Spargel Brothers - "Bitten"
Club Paranoia - "The Cabinet Maker"
Slazenger's People - "Britney's Spear"
Freeman - "Dariana"
Review: Tough asparagus themed drum tracks for the culinary minded vinyl DJs out there on volume 4 of Don't Be Afraid's annual series that celebrates the fact that Record Store Day shares calendar space with the first day of the British Asparagus Season. Those who indulged in last year's inaugural pair of releases will be pleased as asparagus punch that Slazenger's People are once again involved, whilst the cuts from Freeman, Club Paranoia and 48v Spargel Brothers, the three series newcomers, demonstrate that quality control remains as high too. Indeed opening cut "Bitten" from the latter bumps with the kind of sweat inducing authenticity that many a current budding house producer could do well to sit through and take notes.

From The Vaults EP Part 3
A Man Called Adam - "Que Tal America" (Mericana mix)
Chuggles - "Thank You"
Chez & Trent - "Don't Try It"
Chez & Trent - "The Meaning"
Review: The third in Prescription's From the Vaults series is perhaps the most crucial to date, delivering a clutch of veritable classics from the label's archives. Proceeding kick off with the timeless Latin house swing of the Mericana remix of A Man Called Adam's "Que Tal America" from all the way back in 96 - check that sax! Alongside it is Chuggles aka UK house don Ralph Lawson's collaborative effort with Chez Damier brings the searing Chicago emotion via the chord heavy bump of "Thankyou". Mr Damier owns the B Side too, in conjunction with fellow house icon Ron Trent with two of their finest works - "The Meaning" in particular is worthy of purchase alone.

Keepin' The Legacy Vol 2

Abacus/Chez Damier - "Closer" (Jorge Caiado Morning dub) (6:58)
James Duncan - "416 Zone Dub" (6:24)
Jacksonville - "Twilight Industries" (7:58)
Satore - "Keep On" (5:31)
Review: Well over two years has passed since the release of Keeping The Legacy, a compilation style EP featuring tracks inspired by "the classic sounds from Chicago, New York and Detroit". This belated follow-up begins with something rather special: a fine Jorge Caiado 'Morning Dub' of lesser known Abacus and Chez Damier hook-up "Closer". While it boasts their usual chunky, groovy bottom-end, the mix also makes great use of a yearning, cyclical electronic melody. Elsewhere, James Duncan delivers the hazy deep house bump of "416 Zone (Dub Mix)", Jacksonville laces dreamy, drifting chords over a killer bassline and heavy percussion on "Twilight Industries", and Satore reaches for the cowbells and Gwen Guthrie vocal samples on the disco-influenced throb of "Keep On".

Acid Arab Collections EP 03
Acid Arab - "Zahr"
Gilbr Beesan Rum - "A Song For Anna"
Society Of Silence - "Baghdad"
An I & Capablanca - "Farsi Farce"
Review: To date, the Acid Arab Collections EPs and CD - compiled by the Paris-based producers behind the concept, Guido Minisky and Herve Carvalho (who DJ/produce under the Acid Arab alias) - have been little less than stunning. This third vinyl-only EP is of a similar standard. As usual, there's a strong focus on house and techno, with Middle Eastern instrumentation, vocals and samples atop. Highlights include the raw, heavy pump of Society of Silence's deliciously distorted "Baghdad", the spiraling, Brown Album-era Oribital style intoxication of An-I & Capablancas "Farsi Farce", and the ghostly horns and humid pulse of Gilb'r Beesan Rum's "A Song For Anna".

Bossa Loops Remix EP
Cat: BC 011. Rel: 24 May 17
Admin - "Flute Loops" (DJ Nature remix) (5:46)
Chezz - "Bossa" (Admin remix) (5:13)
Review: More from Bristol-based party-starters Boogie Cafe, whose recent releases have impressively straddled the fine line between tooled-up re-edits and all-original productions. On the A-side, they've persuaded New York-based Bristolian DJ Nature to remix current Bristol resident Admin. The man formerly known as DJ Milo does a terrific job, too, offering up a trippy chunk of loose, breakeat-driven, deep house disco that boasts serious amounts of energy. On the reverse, Admin remixes Chezz's "Bossa", wrapping spacey synthesizer motifs and a killer synth bassline around a superbly fluid and crispy broken-house groove. It's a seriously soulful interpretation, and arguably the stronger of the two tracks.

Lack Of Love EP
ADONIS presents CHARLES B
Cat: MATH 051. Rel: 08 Mar 18
Lack Of Love (Summer Of 88) (extended replay) (12:57)
Reck The Joint (Steve Poindexter Reck The House remix) (8:04)
Review: Mathematics continues their fine run in 2011 with a slice of acid house history from the legendary Adonis. All the way back in 1988, Adonis teamed up with Charles B and dropped "Lack Of Love". It's presented here by Jamal Moss's label in a new "Summer Of Love 88 - Extended Replay" version that retains all the delightful and unpredictably raw rhythms that duck between heavy 303 usage and tub thumping gospel leads. You have to marvel at the chaotic epicness of a track which is over twenty years old and probably produced on the most primitive of hardware. On the flip Mathematics mainstay Steve Poindexter drops an equally demented remix of Adonis' 1989 jacker "Reck The Joint" that double dares you to dance.

Alzaya is a boutique label from Milan that has put out a select few EPs over the last three years from names such as Paula Tape. Now it kicks off a new Various Artist series with five quality tunes. Akasha System's 'Midnight Tide' is a nice neon-lit future tech cut with bubbling, soft focus melodies. Tape Hiss offers the old school piano laced joy of 'Scirocco' and Manuel Darquart slips into deep cosmic house lushness with 'Low Tide.' Al Bradley - "Kindergesicht"
Carlo Gambino - "Acid Casual"
Ben Dean - "Track Three"
Michael Scott - "Underdisc"
Review: "After 10 years away from vinyl, 3am Wax Vol.1 hails a return to 12' on the label, now in its 13th year. The EP features an all-3am regular artist cast, three making their debut on vinyl and one making a return to 12' after a 12 year gap. 3am boss Al Bradley opens the EP, while label regulars Carlo Gambino, Ben Dean and Michael Scott all return for the 12". With over 400 releases and remixes between the artists, the EP showcases in-house talent from the label - the emphasis on quality rather than names. Ranging from Berlin-influenced deepness through to raw analog acid house, the EP has been doing damage at label gigs throughout 2015 including Berlin, Ibiza, Copenhagen, New York, London & label-home Leeds, with plaudits and support also coming in from a wide range of DJs from the promo."

Vanguard Sound Vol 4
Cat: AC 003. Rel: 10 Jul 13
Amir Alexander - "Cypher"
Chris Mitchell - "213 NI"
DJ Spider - "New World Resistance"
Dakini9 - "Rollercoaster To Nowhere"
Review: Volume four of the Vanguard Sound series from Anunnaki Cartel label sees Amir Alexander and Chris Mitchell once again open the invitation to the East Coast house innovators. This time it's Plan B pair DJ Spider and Dakini9 who line up alongside the label founders with Amir Alexander setting a rough and rugged tone on opening track "Cypher". Rasping kicks and a killer bouncing analogue bassline drive the track forwards as Alexander gradually weaves in a searing synth tone which increases with smudged incandescence until a vocal sample offers some brief politically tinged respite before the synth tone kicks back in. Mitchell is in equally bullish mood on "213 NL" a straight up drum track that ratchets up into full blow acid filled psychedelia as the final third hones into view. On the Plan B side, Spider drops one of his trademark lurching rhythms, with skittering drums traversing the gritty lower frequencies of "New World Resistance" which is filled with the sort of vocal samples that justifies the title. "Rollercoaster To Nowhere" from Dakini9 is just as impressive, retaining the murky mood yet driven by it's own almost drunken percussive swagger.

St Sene & Janeret - "Nightshifter"
Review: Another arm of Chez Damier's multi-limbed Balance Alliance, Courtesy of Balance inaugurate a new series of 12" compilation releases with COB 3, arriving on limited edition transparent vinyl. Amir Alexander kicks things off following a crop of killer releases for Vanguard Sound and Hype LTD with "Dragon Fly!" featuring the subtly undulating bassline and fresh take on the deep house template he's known for, while City 2 City's "True People 88 89 90" comes true on the promise of its title, with a piece of vintage house that goes beyond the usual hollow revivalism. On the flip, Immer & Mr J's "Delta 23" offers a thick piece of mid-tempo house, with a piercing kick drum, offbeat dub chords and contained acid madness, while St Sene & Janeret's "Nightshifter" takes things down a notch with a late-night house track filled with swirling pads and diva vocals swelling on the midnight horizon.

Review: 'Disco Tape', which launched via a must-check 12" back in August 2023, os Sound Exhibitions' multi-artist EP series. This second volume is a similarly action-packed affair that gleefully blurs the boundaries between reworks, re-edits and sample-heavy original productions. Alexny kicks things off with two sun-soaked treats - the percussive and warming tropical disco tribute 'Caribbean Breeze' and the sax solo-sporting dancefloor shuffle of 'Bada Boom' - before Paride Pavone rounds off side A with the jazzy disco-house celebration of 'In Key'. Phil Disco impresses on side B with two killer cuts (the funky bass-propelled disco heaviness of 'Never Gonna Leave You' and the swirling jazz-funk-house bump of 'Disco Ipno', while disco-funk specialist C Da Afro rounds things off in fine style via the insatiable grooves and fluttering flute solos of 'The Choice'.

Review: Martin Brodin's MB Disco imprint continues to deliver the good stuff, this time featuring two utterly essential Psychemagik mixes of Alico vs Cagri's "Les Mondes Engloutis". These mixes actually first surfaced on a digital-only release back in 2013, but now they've been buffed up for a full vinyl pressing, and rightly so. A side "Main Mix" is a full bodied, emotional banger with a lead drop to get crowds waving arms and singing along wholeheartedly. Our pick is the "5am Mix" on the flip though, where the synths take on a more shimmering nocturnal tone without losing that bright and bold character that will land this 12" in all manner of record bags this summer.

Review: This new 12" from High Fashion sure has the potential to become a popular hit on the more commercially minded dance floors out there. It's a mega-mash-up with ALOK, Never Dull, Kenny Dope featuring Ella Eyre and cult 90s vocalists Crystal Waters all featuring. The result is a nice deep house cut with classic neon chords and hooky vocal samples recognisable to all. There is an extended mix for more drawn our pleasures on the floor and the original version. Form Of Change
A Mental Image
Review: Charles Noel has been enjoying a resurgence of late, with his early explorations as Archetype resurfacing on a number of reissue labels. Future Primitive have tapped Noel up for two cuts that typify his left-of-centre approach, leading in with the sharp-edged beat excursion "Form Of Change" that will appeal to all lovers of reduced, off-kilter rhythm workouts. "A Mental Image" adopts a softer stance, laying out a bed of silken pads and errant tweaks that tap into the head-tripping mood of vintage techno while maintaining the future-minded thrust that makes true machine music timeless, whichever era it was crafted in.

The playful Sweden-based collective calls upon Ari Bald and CJ Scott for this latest outing and sure as hell it kicks off with the lush and uplifting loops of 'Detective Chimp' that take you ever higher. 'King Conga' is then a jazzy, percussive workout on a lovely jumbled and organic rhythm, 'Orangotango' as loose and disco-tinged drum shuffles and sci-fi synth details and 'Grape Ape' rounds out a charming, characterful EP full of colour.

Review: With such a star-studded line-up of old and new talent involved, it's little surprise to find that De La Groove's fourth vinyl release is seriously good. It's that good, in fact, that there's no space to go into each and every highlight. Instead, we'll point you in the direction of some of our personal favourites. Check first the breezy and soulful US garage revivalism of Art of Tones' impeccable "So Sweet", before turning your attention to the dreamy, vibraphone-laden deep house sexiness of Cody Currie's "As of Yet (featuring Joel Holmes)". Grant Nelson's "In The Dark" is a fine slab of late '90s style UK garage, while Goddard's "Almasti" sounds like a nu-disco era riff on Pepe Bradock deep house classic "Deep Burnt".

Despite the sometimes infuriating infrequency of their releases, Faces records are rarely less than inspired, offering a deliciously soul-soaked take on deep house. This split EP contains four superb offerings in the label's trademark style. There's some loopy, Rhodes-laden goodness from S3A (doing a good impression of Moodymann), a more bumping but thrillingly immersive outing from 4004 & Sebastien Vorhaus (the sumptuous "Selections B"), a lovingly loose and sweet blast of soft focus deepness from Valentino under his Creative Swing Alliance alias, and a bassy chunk of eyes-wide-shut house from Aurelian AKA KM3.

Review: Swiss label Idealistmusic return with another fine various artists EP: the first since 2015's edition which brought us great stuff from SCSI-9, Pablo Mateo and Idealist himself. For the label's ninth edition, they serve up some tough tribal deep house by fellow Swiss deepness purveyors Baaz of Office Recordings whose contribution "Burgundy" is emotive as ever. Thomas Wood's "Rough Road" is classic deep house informed by a healthy love of classic Chicago sounds by Larry Heard or Chris Gray. On the flip, Christoph Schindling's contribution "Most Important" is a summery and hypnotic groove awash in tape saturation and lo-fi aesthetics; its spanglish melodies working some real magic over its strict electro beat.

Review: House of Chez is the new label from the legendary American deep house pioneer Chez Damier. It follows involvement with the seminal Prescription with Ron Trent in the 90s, then his own Balance, and finds him once again serving up super fresh grooves. He appears himself on 'Together' with his French studio partner as H2H and also Damian Rausch and the tune is pure and steamy house deepness. Elsewhere Emanuele Barilli gets dreamy with 'Unconscious Relief', there is a soulful vocal to the dry beats of Mosis's 'Pick It Up' and Oscide's 'No Use' is a little more prickly and direct.

Paper Tears (Same Victories, Same Mistakes)
Paper Tears (Tribal Tears dub)
Review: The phrase "Gerd Janson does it again" seems to be uttered all too often here at Juno HQ, with his Running Back imprint somehow maintaining a standard of quality that's matched by the lack of fuss Janson makes about it. The latest 12" reeks of Running Back brilliance with finely judged artwork complemented by superb music - courtesy of mysterious producer BDI who was last seen dropping the brilliant "City & Industry" on Rush Hour. Described with typical verve as "Vatican house", this three track release has the erstwhile BDI operating under the Compassion Crew name drawing out three variants on "Paper Tears" with the jangly insouciance of the Tribal Tears Dub perhaps the pick of the lot.

Review: Kid Fonque presents the sixth instalment of his label Stay True Sounds' compilation series. Showcasing the best of South Africa's dynamic musical talents, this 15-track volume of intense deep house and Afro house cuts is not to be passed over. Highlights on this 12" sampler edition of the wider comp include 'We R 1', a technologically driven, syncopated, trippy Kalahari jam by China Charmeleon and Hypaphonik; and 'SARS' by Beatsbyhand, a hollering ambient amapiano mystery.

Bicep - "Mixxmaster 88"
Casino Times - "Heart Strings"
Medlar - "Cant Stop" (Creative Swing Alliance remix)
Ishmael - "Want You"
Review: Given their illustrious rise over the past twelve months, the appearance of Belfast duo Bicep on the latest Wolf Music release is quite the coup for the London label. Artist and label are of course no strangers, with a Bicep dub of Medlar appearing WOLFEP009, yet there's currently a Midas touch style momentum driving Andrew Ferguson and Matthew McBriar that should ensure this 12" sells out even swifter than previous lupine plates. "Mixmaster 88" is an unadulterated party anthem and another ode to some of their heroes (spot the cheeky Armando usage) yet it's most memorable because it shows Bicep at their most confident. Further house music excellence is afforded with contributions from Casino Times, Medlar and newcomer Ishmael that ensure this is yet another all killer, no filler emission from the Wolf Music stable.

So In Love (Cassio radio remix) (5:07)
Review: Second time around for Blaze's 1993 outing under the Black Rascals alias, which famously featured Cassio Ware on vocals. "So In Love" has stood the test of time impressively, thanks in no small part to the way in which the "Shelter Mix" strikes a perfect balance between the swing of New Jersey garage, the melodiousness of early '90s deep house and the effortlessly soulfulness of Ware's vocals. The package contains two dubs: the near ambient bless of the cymbals-and-synths workout that is the "Piano Man Dub", and the fluid vibraphone style solos that stretch out across the groovy "Shelter Dub". Ware's "Radio Remix", which boasts AOR style guitar solos and a loose, hip-hop influenced beat pattern, completes a tidy package.

Review: Renowned producer Bodeler makes his mark on the newly emerging Minimal Brooklin label with a masterful display of minimalism on his A1 cut, then respected Argentinian Franco Cinelli remixes and delivers something immersive. On the B-side, Nicola Brusegan and Camilo Gil unite to create a soulful deep house track complete with lush chords and pulsating basslines, and this one is paired with a remix from Jorge Caiado that is sure to electrify dance floors thanks to his knack for crafting statement-making sound and pulsating acid vibes.

Review: Deep don Pablo Bolivar is back to explore the murky waters that exist way below the surface on Seven Villas, this time with Celestial Sphere alongside for the trip. 'Context' opens with swirling celestial pads, traintrack-like grooves and plenty of vinyl crackle while 'Second' is a super slow motion and utterly sparse world with the most wispy pad and occasional hit sketching out the vibe and rhythm. 'Good Deal' twinkles with a little more light and hope in the melodies that break the surface as dusty drums and dub bass cocoon you from below. 'What Is Value' is a masterful ten-minute closer for utter catharsis.

Review: After making a decisive return with the first low-key release on the new Blaufield imprint, Booka Shade step up again with Chelonis R Jones in tow for a more full-bodied release, replete with remixes from Friederike Meissner. The club mix of "Blackout: White Noise" showcases the more tense, physical side of the Booka sound, all driving rhythm and rigid, techy synth lines that belie Jones' involvement. Their "Booka Flash" rework of the original goes deeper into minimal tones, while Meissner's remixes skirt both gleaming tech-house and melodic dubstep packed full of studio trickery and bold musicality.

Avocado
Review: Like many labels founded by producers, Naked Naked started as an outlet for Breach's productions, but has since expanded its' roster to include a swathe of like-minded producers. Here, Breach wrests back control, joining forces with Cinnaman for two tracks of molten deep house with subtle UK garage influences. Opener "Liberty" sets the tone, with chiming melodies wrapping themselves around a snare-heavy, tech-tinged deep house groove. The track benefits from the duo's use of held chords and surprisingly sparse production. Flip for "Avocado", a hustling fusion of hip-wigglin' beats, chopped and screwed vocal samples and a killer bassline.

Review: Flexi Cuts is a young label but already one with a great sound. For the sac and time here they dip into their vast pools of talent for a Velvet Series various artists compilation. It is Brine who kicks off with spraying acid synths and clicking beats that are deep but impactful. Daughters & Sons then sink into a lush and dreamy Italo-house reverie and Manuold brings some prickly beats and old school acid to his lo-fi house. The smoky and basement styled house continues on the reverse but it is Glove Hands who steals the show with a dreamy downtempo lullaby for late night lovers.

Alex Ketzer - "Falling Off" (Sandrow M remix)
Cuthead - "Splenda Daddy"
Jacob Stoy - "Inspektor"
Review: On this latest transmission from the vale of Dresden, the Uncanny Valley crew have sewn together another four solid cuts of convention-bucking house music to suit more adventurous ears. Brodka comes correct with a heartfelt turn that isn't afraid to embrace vocals within a stripped construction, while Sandrow M's remix of Alex Ketzer opts for a darker tone weighed down by growling bass before turning out some Joy O-style vocal mangling. Cuthead meanwhile is not as concerned with refined production, instead delivering a rugged acid melter that blossoms into a thoroughly jazzed-out affair. Jacob Stoy has his own curious take to bring to the table, working around minimal tones and a simple beat and fleshing the track out with discordant keys that have their own modal message to intone.

Review: Oblivium's first vinyl outing is well worthy of its space on wax as Nicola Brusegan and Camilo Gil serve up the deep than deep house of 'Revolution Of Tha Mind 909 Poems By: Tea Time.' The original Hood mix is first and is one coated in sustained chords, dusty atmospheres and soulful vocal mutterings with plenty of analogue percussion and loopy, swinging drums. The Luciano remix is a more uneasy and stringy minimal version, as you would expect, and then comes a much more raw and edgy number from Lil Mark in the form of his Swing Tech mix. A Varied and vital package is shut down with Chris Carrier's steamy and humid 909 Tribute mix.

Review: Steve Bug is going on 30+ years of writing electronic music and travelling the world as a top DJ with no signs of letting up. It Just Happened is his latest and finds its way to the legendary and iconic Nu Groove records. It must be daunting to release music on such an amazing label. 'It Just Happened' has all the makings of a classic worthy enough for the Nu Groove logo. Veteran Cle who has worked on many projects with Steve is featured here as well. For those that really know Steve Bug's background, they know he is equally involved in house music as he is with techno. Tracks like 'Crew Thing' show his ability to make a standout house track while 'House Music Transcends' closes things out with your hands in the air. We respect Steve Bug so much for his work over the years. When he is old skool mode like he is on this EP, you just have to say respect to the man. Respect!

Review: Yoyaku's sublabel YoY presents a short double LP from Thoma Bulwer and Claus Voigtmann, blending every line between deep house, electro, breaks, and house. Not relying on theme or context to compel the listener, rather pure phonic phatics, a title like Grand Theft Auto might be the only clue as to the album's associative grounding: the likes of 'Liberated' and 'Just Do It' promise a driven, transgressive enjoyment - in which we might actually be able to jack a car as we would jack a groove, and guiltlessly enjoy the excesses of such a musico-criminal spree - a promise made just as clearly in the video game series and franchise of the same name. Soundtracking this voracious ride is a tricky, brukky, bass-driven and intriguingly textured record, one that wrests us, for better or worse, from the need to obey.

Review: Public Possession welcomes back Tubbs & Burns for a second volume of their eponymous series. It comes a year after the first which showcased their leftfield take on house across four well-received cuts. This outing is just as likely to turn heads with 'Shaker' first up to twist your mind with spangled synths and drums weaving around one another. 'Timmy's Dream' (Ritual dub) is a heavily percussive and dubbed-out tribal sound with 'Made Of Brass' layering up mystic jungle synths with more great hand drums and steamy horns. 'Timmy's Dream' (Monday 5am mix) is perfect for the afters with its more freaky vibes.

Review: Eden Burns & Christopher Tubbs come together for a deep house exploration on the third volume of their self-titled 12" series on Public Possession. '"Where Were U In 92?' opens up with some sublimely slow motion but seductive drums and smeared synths that are coloured with a dreamy, detached vocal that drifts up top and is doused in echo. On the flip is 'ON&ON' (feat Nathan Haines) which picks up the pace and brings more percussive jack to the beats and a little extra lightness in the melody. The Bullet Train mix takes things more into peak-time territory with hints of techno in the rhythms.
