Review: Since making their name with the bleep/loved up deep house fusion of "Low Frequency Overload" back in 1990, British duo 100 Hz have continued to deliver occasional 12" singles. Their latest EP, Immersive, is full of rich, saucer-eyed deep house treats. Highlights include the darting, near Balearic synths and dream house style grooves of "Rio",the boompty-influenced cut and thrust of "Rub Tub (Edit)", where jammed-out jazz synths cluster around a killer funk bassline, and the ultra-deep, but suitably energetic "Whiskey Pineapple". This latter track is propelled forwards by a relentless bassline, crunchy drum machine percussion, and some foreboding melody lines.

Review: The always cultured Emotional Rescue kicks of the first of what will be a series of reissue sou the music of young Michael Ashley aka Haile Maskel. He hailed from Trenchtown in Jamaica and grew up singing, learning guitar and bass, redoing under the tutelage of Bob Marley early on. Here his soul drenched reggae is offered dup with 'Crazy Kind Of Feeling', a unique track with horns and big bass but also a subtle disco energy. Next to a dub take, Patrick Billard aka DJ Duckcomb serves up a mix that embellishes on the disco elements.

Hot Tonight (part II) (4:06)
Review: Here's a nod to late 70s disco, funk and boogie featuring some of the best NYC musicians to grace the scene in the past 20 years, and recorded at Soul Fire Studios featuring over two dozen musicians. Members of El Michels Affair, Lee Fields & The Expressions, The Dap- Kings, Antibalas and more are featured on 10th Street's '(Gonna Get) Hot Tonight' which is a classic and timeless disco funk affair featuring an absolutely sublime string section. Over on the flip, the slower and more emotive 'Hot Tonight' (part II) makes for feelgood vibes on the dancefloor later in the night, featuring sensual vocals to boot.

(Livin' In) New York City (3:26)
Moodies Basement (4:19)
Review: Masterminded by Jeff Dynamite Silverman, 10th Street is an all-star studio band comprised of some of NYC's best disco, funk and soul musicians of the last two decades (including members of Antibalas, the Dap-Kings, The Expressions and El Michels Affair). The collective's self-titled debut album, which dropped earlier this year, is a genuine must-listen and offers a near perfect distillation of disco, soul and funk flavours of the 1970s. This 7" single sports two of that set's standout cuts: hazy, mid-tempo, laidback disco-funk number 'Livin' In New York City', where Blaxploitation guitar licks, spacey synths, sustained organ chords and eyes-closed female vocals catch the ear, and the weightier, more percussive and undeniably dancefloor-friendly instrumental 'Moodie's Basement'. In a word: essential!

Timed Reality (7:18)
Parallel Strings (7:26)
Altered Possibility (7:14)
Review: In our eyes, Patrice Scott's Sistrum Recordings represents everything that we like about deep house. That is not to say the label is limited at one single sound or genre, but it's more about its approach to finding the right artists to fit with its aesthetics. This latest head to head by the 12 To 30 trio - Bacanito, Giovanni Randisi and Tazz - is another stunning escapade into the deepest and most cerebral shades of house music, and the opener "Timed Reality" makes use of the genre only for its tempo, preferring instead to deliver a sublime wall of pads, airy synths and sci-fi effects. "Parallel Strings" reminds us of Theo Parrish in his mid-'2000s mode, but "Altered Possibility" is the real winner on here; a warm slice of SH 101 noise is just what we need for our low-end necessities.

Review: Hot Piroski Records have been on something of a hiatus for the last year or so but now make a welcome return with a new EP series. This collaborative affair is the result of an epic journey in an old Mercedes from London to Gunjur and finds label head Robin 12Tree working with The Gambia and Bongo Koi as Gambian Disco Express. 'Enlightenment is Now' marks their first release on Hot Piroski Records and it comes with vocals from Gambian mystic Rev. Joseph N'Gole, recorded on the banks of the River Gambia. This one has already been hammered by Psychemagik, Pete Herbert, and Severino from Horse Meat Disco so it comes quality assured.

Tkg (5:21)
Soso (6:30)
Mondat (7:33)
Toine (6:09)
Review: French producer 1977 aka Matsa, delivers a bold and subtle blending of ambient textures, deep pads and raw rhythms perfectly mixed with some minimal sequences. In Brief, a fine and complete piece of electronic music, made with constant attention to detail. Starting out with the hauntingly emotive ambience of "Tkg" where sub bass pulsations lurk between the crackling of surface noise, pitch shifted vocals and transcendental chilling pads, then the dusty and emotive deep house of "Soso" which is informed equally by Fred P as it is by the likes of Lawrence. On the flip, there's the rather Fred P sounding "Mondat" which is the highlight a smoothly emotive deep house number while "Toine" gets dubbier and subterranean in a way that UntilMyHeartStops fans will appreciate.

Bittersuite - "Squeeze In"
Miles Sagnia - "Can We Heal Them?"
Review: Atmospheric Existence Recordings keep up their annual release rate with label boss Miles Sagnia inviting 1Dan and Bittersuite to join him on only the third release. Newcomer 1Dan opens proceedings with the sprawling soft machine funk flex of "Foundations", a track driven by gutter deep bass movements, steppy syncopation and rich sonic textures that no doubt helped influence the title of the EP. On the flip Bittersuite step forward with the upwards acid dub pressure of "Squeeze In" which steadily accrues an acidic overtone before a delightful left turn into a futuristic mechano soul rhythmic thrust. It's left to Sagnia to provide the final moment with the tightly relentless throb of "Can We Heal Them" that slowly reveals its inner acid brilliance.

Church (Darkstarr Diskotek dub)
Review: Given the clubby, fun nature of their music, it's not surprising 2 Bears have become the most popular off shoot of the Hot Chip phenomenon. Joe Goddard's project with fellow larger than life scene stalwart Raf Daddy see their Southern Fried classic "Church" get the Darkstarr treatment. It's an all round classy release - with the typically on point production from DJ Cosmo and Ashley Beedle across the Rub and Dub versions more than matched by the presentation. This 10 inch has hand silk screen printed artwork and label courtesy of artist James Morrison and represents the final instalment in Bitches Brew series of highly limited ten inches. Musically our favourite is the Rub, simply because the live sounding deep bump is the perfect backing for the rising crescendo of chorus harmonies.

Gonna Let You Go
Review: Bringing a dose of irreverence to the normally po-faced deep house scene, fresh-faced producers 2 Bit Crew make good their second release with a pair of cheeky tracks that remind us it's about having fun in the midst of serious grooves. The beat, bassline and swing on "Wanna See You Pop" may be first-rate New Jersey house music, but the vocal is an unlikely suspect that winds up defining the track in an off-kilter manner. Likewise on "Gonna Let You Go" the diva vocal cries take the limelight, and make for a heated dancefloor message that should tug at the soul and the hips without hesitation.

Delkab Ave (beat mix)
Review: There's no real clue as to the origin of this record by 2 Bitches From Queens, the first of two to drop this week, though the tone of the music and the chosen name is clearly done in reverence to the ballroom scene of early '90s New York and DJ Junior Vasquez. Apparently made by, for and with DJs in mind, The Dip features four fierce examples of percussion heavy house music with plenty of bass, filtered vocals and general attitude. There's an authenticity to the production here that makes it hard to decipher whether this is uncovered material from the time or some well schooled contemporary artists. Peep the flip for the two mixes of "Delkalb Ave" for the hotness!

Review: Podium presents 'Work (Late Nite NYC Mix)', just the type of track that was always missing in your record case. Where
other contemporary house tracks dissolve the tension with superfluous sounds, 2000 And One's production has a striking,
efficient economy. He condenses the uplifting nature of this style of music: with the compellingly humble bassline and the
restrained fanfare, New York House sparkles in its most basic beauty. It is music that cultivates simplicity as an art form.

"Sunday Avuncular" is a rampant fire that's sparked with minimal elements but suddenly whips up into a full uptempo storm. "Bauxite, Gypsum & Limestone" is the smooth talker of the set with its soulful boogie tones and a momentum that gets more and more direct as the track develops. Finally "Mononymous Persons" concludes this special 12" with a staccato beat and groove so wet 2000 Black should consider selling special branded towels. Exceptional.

Tape (Dirt Crew dub mix)
Review: The 2020 Soundsystem boys return with an even more DJ friendly edit of the funky electronic disco, Greg Wilson inspired track "Tape". "Tape" is taken from 2020 Soundsystem's debut album "No Order", which was released earlier this year to 5 star reviews across the board. The guys worked on their original sound, influenced by the classic 80s electrofunk sets of the brilliant Greg Wilson, to give the track an extra dancefloor injection. Our first remixer Burnski, a fresh, new talent who has already made his mark through releases on Infant Records, Morris Audio and Trapez. He takes things deeper with his trademark clicky style, but still keeping the funk stuck in the grooves. Dirt Crew have been cleaning up with their productions on prestigious labels such as Moodmusic, Gomma, Breastfed, Soma, Crosstown Rebels and now 2020 Vision. Dirt Crew deliver two killer mixes in their trademark solid, hypnotic, electronic house style. The dub keeps things stripped down and heads down, whilst the main mix, which is only available digitally, goes straight for the jugular with a Teutonic rave sound.

Rushing For Fools
Review: Taking its name from the grey, concrete-filled grimy Nordvest area of Copenhagen where they reside, and fitting with the current wave of 303 revivalists doing interesting things with the tried and tested template (Recondite, Tin Man) 2400 Operator have already impressed with some deeper leaning releases for Jus Ed's esteemed Underground Quality imprint. On this three track EP for Tartelet they experiment more explicitly with the sounds of electro. "NV Electro" makes it patently clear what vibe they're going for with its track title and does so with considerable success; it's lean 808 breakbeat combines with a brittle arpeggio and searching pad melodies that is part classic Hague sound and part classic New York deepness. "Projects" is a more 4/4 affair but still uses a more cosmic sci-fi palette, complete with glittering synth arp and chunky low slung bassline to keep things grounded, while "Rushing For Fools" is like classic 80s house accented with 303 bass stabs that nevertheless has a clear and modern sensibility, delivering clever rhythms underneath its acid crescendo.

First up, his 2AM/FM project with D'Marc Cantu with "Poison Dart" a gritty late night Berlin lazer-fest. Continuance (Theory Of Lazy Clap)
Review: The more perceptive among you will no doubt twig the musical direction of an EP entitled "The Deepness" by 2DeepSoul before the needle even hits the groove. If you hoped it was going to be brimming with ocean deep grooves and burning chords - deep house in the truest sense - then you'd be right. Malcolm Moore's Altered Moods Recordings brings us the debut release from 2DeepSoul, aka Rai Scott and Brad Peterson, who set their stall out with a title track dripping with moody synths and hypnotic drums n' hats. "Escaping Insanity" meanwhile is underpinned by a delicious acid line - perhaps the most outright floor-friendly track on this here 12". The metronomic pulse of "Harmony" is augmented by a majestic one note synth loop that gently soars above - a rasping hat soon joins the fray along with the gentlest of string flourishes. "Continuance (Theory Of Lazy Clap)" is equally bewitching, with a title and arrangement that wouldn't sound out of place in the DJ Sprinkles catalogue.

Bubbling and acid toned squiggles dance upon staccato hi-hats and choral melodies in the upbeat and sweat sounding house cut "Serenade". Review: Italian vinyl imprint Quality Vibe has had a consistent run of releases in the last few years, with some our favourites coming courtesy of Berlin legend DJ Honesty, British house underdog Tommy Vicari Jr and that great inaugural release by Harmonie Park boss Rick Wade. It's now over to rising Spanish duo 2vilas to take the reins, following up releases on top labels such as WAXISGUD, Off Recordings and Organic Musik. On the Destiny EP, we have the title track kicking off the A side in style - this deep, dusty and hypnotic jam is a respectful tribute to the Cab Drivers/Cabinet Records sound and is totally sublime. Fellow label alumnus Thomas Wood appears next, with a remix of the track where you can expect yet more smoky and hazy deepness that's perfectly suited to the early evening of the afterhours alike. On the flip, the tough and swing fuelled shuffle of "I Know" closes out this fine EP in style with its delay drenched chords used sparingly for dubby and hypnotic effect, in a way that Zky and Daniel Paul themselves would approve of. Tip!

It is life-affirming gospel, soul and r&b that makes perfect fodder for a remixer like Louie Vega. I'm Not Dreamin
Review: During last year's extended pandemic lockdown in Italy, Bari-based producers Rhythm of Paradise, Nico Lags and St David decided to join forces on a collaborative project for the very first time. The results can be heard on this rather good EP, which slickly combines elements of classic Italian deep house and soulful house in cheery, sun-kissed ways. In its original form, 'Love Will Find a Way' is a warming deep house number full of crunchy machine drums, positive-sounding chords, strong female vocals and fluid piano lines. St David provides the first remix, basing the action around spacey pads, sustained electric piano chords and a squelchy synth bassline, before Nico Lahs provides a more hypnotic, thickset take. Slick and soulful number 'I'm Not Dreamin' completes a rock-solid package.

'Obsessed' is the sort of steamy and potent deep house that has just the right mix of headiness and physicality, all topped off with smart samples. Review: The fourth in the Private Release series overseen with such artistic aplomb by the Public Release imprint arrives with Rong Music clique 40 Thieves at the helm. Once again continuing the food based theme, this picture disc depicts the before and after stages of what happens when a burrito is placed in front of a hungry soul - with this choice of dish worthy of the Bay Area crew. Across both sides 40 Thieves serve up three edits as well as an original arrangement with the former triplet set to get those disco beards twitching with regards to the source. From the cosmic meanderings of "Wandering" to the dubby proto warehouse flex of "Wanting For Lust" and the psychedelic cosmiche wanderlust of "Incredible Doobie" our own train spotting endeavours are exhausted and seeped in failure. What is important however is each track is killer, and bettered by "Telegraph" a towering melange of ever climbing squeaky synth modulations and urgent rhythms. Big tip!

Mother (5:15)
Father (4:51)
Sister (5:51)
Brother (5:13)
Review: It's a numbers game for Selections's 11th release as they welcome 4004 to the label for a sublime four-track outing. 'Mother' is as deep as house music gets and is steeped in US traditions and smoky basement atmospheres with candle-lit chords and fragments of soulful vocals. 'Father' then rides on bumpy drums but swirling Rhodes and dusty hits keep it pure vibes. 'Sister' ups the ante once more with chord vamps and a loopy low end that works you into a steamy lather and finally 'Brother' then cuts loose and dreamy pads and an aching vocal snippet and hints of gospel. Four tasteful house gems, all in all.

Review: German imprint Quintessentials' mission statement is to keep underground house music on the map. It claims to hold a candle to those old house records: they love that raw yet soulful vibe. For their 56th (!) release they have tapped Mexican producer 4004, who has had releases also of late on FACES, Poetry In Motion and Late Night Jackin'. Smoky late night groove "No Dreams" gets things off to a good start with its smooth Rhodes, bumpy bassline and hypnotic bongo action. We particularly enjoyed the pumping NYC basement vibe of B side cut "Fanta Club" while "Black Alley Shuffle" gets back to the program in sexy and dusky fashion complete with some dusty rhythms, diva vocals and further mood lighting with the impressive use of filter sweeps.

Review: Pablo Valentino's Faces label has long been a reliable outlet for breezy, sample based house music and disco n boogie business with an eye for the soulful thanks to contributions from amongst others MCDE, Inskwel, Tom Noble and Ugly Drums. For their latest release the label grants Mexican producer 4004 a full 12" after he first appeared on a Faces split release last year and it's most definitely a good fit. The three original cuts from 4004 on Bring It All Back will resonate deeply with anyone that keeps a look out for Wolf Music release, rich in warm musical touches and dusty drums from the off! There is also a piano heavy Ravist Remix of "Round Streets" from Concrete artist Sampling As An Art that is just crying out to be played to a packed dancefloor.

Review: Though 420 was originally recorded and released in April of 2020, Galcher Lustwerk's pandemic project is an exercise in counting and patience. Originally from a 16 track, 69 minute release only available for Bandcamp for $69 (or $4.20 per track), the 420 project brings us practically brand spanking new Galcher EP, just under a different name. Finally at an accessible price (and including signature Galcher vocals in a majority of the tracks to boot) this vinyl release hopes to bring more fans who missed the original release to the 420 club.

Review: Smooth yet dusty and rusty retro house on offer here from D.K. Aka 45 ACP on L.I.E.S. offshoot Russian Torrent Versions. Taking an interesting change in direction from its usual choice of banging peak time techno tools. Also worth mentioning his album "Change Of Tone" was also released this year on the former. All the tracks on this release here sounding reminiscent of early nineties school Chicago house and all in rather convincing fashion. Analogue purists take note! More promising things on offer from this mysterious Parisian producer.

Review: Tough asparagus themed drum tracks for the culinary minded vinyl DJs out there on volume 4 of Don't Be Afraid's annual series that celebrates the fact that Record Store Day shares calendar space with the first day of the British Asparagus Season. Those who indulged in last year's inaugural pair of releases will be pleased as asparagus punch that Slazenger's People are once again involved, whilst the cuts from Freeman, Club Paranoia and 48v Spargel Brothers, the three series newcomers, demonstrate that quality control remains as high too. Indeed opening cut "Bitten" from the latter bumps with the kind of sweat inducing authenticity that many a current budding house producer could do well to sit through and take notes.

Review: Debutants 4D & Krunky create ravey and funked-up minimal techno, taking its cues from early Detroit techno and northern bleep styles. The grooves to be heard on the Humanoid label's are as cute as the label art: from the strobed-out shuffle 'n' roll of 'Oplescot', to the west coast breaks of 'Stunt Bubble' calling to mind the mid '90s sounds of Northern California, and the hyper aware boompty boomp of closer 'Seasaw'.

4 You
Review: Marc Kinchen is kinda worshipped here at Juno - "Given", released in 1993 on his Area label (and soon to get re-released on Omar S's FXHE), is a classic example of the US garage sound that was taken on by Todd Edwards et al in later years. "4You", which appeared on the same 12" as the aforementioned "Given", is here treated to a repress on Defected with a brace of contemporary remixes from Maya Jane Coles and 2000 And One. Coles - who owes a great deal of her sound to the likes of MK - serves up a driving tech house retweak, while 2000 And One brings the brass to the fore on his version, indulging those late night keys. As good as they are, nothing beats the original cut. That bassline, that clipped vocal, it all still works ... brilliantly.

Review: The always adventurous Especial label is back on its world travels once more for another cultured EP, this time from Jonne Lyden aka 53X. This is a widescreen bass exploration with trance-tinged steppas looking firmly to the future from the Finnish-born artist. He has a background in punk bands but a trip to Berlin turned his ear and now he makes experimental fusions that draw on everything from industrial to Berghain to Detroit for inspiration. His tunes are mostly started out as live jams and then edited into what we have here - club-ready sounds, rich atmospherics, acid, breaks and hypnotic rhythms.

Some Song Teachers (5:56)
Dilemma (5:40)
Review: There's a lot to be said for club music that aims to both soothe the senses and move the feet. We can think of few better examples than "Some Song Teachers", the title track from this Public Possession collaboration between Cos/Mes member 5ive and label-hopping Swede Samo DJ. While underpinned by a sturdy, tactile rhythm track, it's the blissful electronics and undulating, rising and falling synthesizer melodies - new age influenced, but also intensely positive and mood-enhancing - that make the track so addictive. Flipside "Dilemma" is similarly smile inducing, offering a tasty twist on melodious, dusty deep house. It's nowhere near as striking as its' predecessor, but it's still a very fine track indeed.
