Indicut (2:42)
Indicut (instrumental) (2:40)
Review: Mexico-based duo Apocrifo serve up their debut single 'Indicut' with LA hip-hop and soul virtuoso Georgia Ann Muldrow on the vocal. This outfit is made up of producer Kefren Rivera and percussionist Carlos Huitro and they plenty of jazz, hip hop and electroacoustic elements into a unique sound that is exemplified here. The track is a broody, lo-fi world of sound with hip-hop beats and the yearning jazz vocals of Muldrow adding to the effect next to sombre piano chords. The instrumental strips everything back to the killer beats. This is a great first offering from this outfit who surely have plenty more to come.

Magic Ritual (GB remix)
Magic Ritual (original)
Review: Luv N'Haight's Edits series hits pay dirt here with the supreme pairing of Harry Whitaker's Black Renaissance project and Los Angeles producer par excellence Gifted & Blessed. The focus here is the Black Renaissance classic "Magic Ritual" which is present and correct on the B Side and if you don't know this highlight from the Body, Mind & Spirit LP then you need to get involved because it's a superb exercise in New York jazz, especially when that sax hits! Still though, the main draw is the remix from Eglo and Wild Oats artist GB and it's a killer reworking, implementing shards of the rattling, jazz percussion into a thick set beast that funks from start to end.

Blackstreet - "No Diggity" (feat Dr Dre) (3:42)
Ginuwine - "Pony" (4:00)
Review: Blackstreet's "No Diggity" is a stone cold hip hop classic. From proper club plays to cheesy parochial nights out, it unites everyone on the dance floor and never fails to become a communal singalong. It sounds as hot now as it ever did and so makes sense for Home Hitters to serve up a new limited pressing. The b-side is from US giant Ginuwine. "Pony" was his debut single co written with Timbaland and Static Major, and it is a deep cut and libidinous tune with obvious sexual metaphors and vocodered vocal samples, a cartoon whistle slide and stop-start rhythm makes it all the more alluring.

Benji Boko - "The Jungle VIP"
Gelka - "So Many Ways"
Review: Wax On presents 'Wax On Label Sampler Part 1', with all tracks taken from the forthcoming Wax On Records compilation
'Nightmares On Wax Presents Wax On Records' (WAXCD002).
N.O.W. mastermind DJ E.A.S.E. introduces the next wave of blessed Waxonians to the world of the good groove, unrolling
the red carpet for some more amazing talent and their honest music on his label. Brighton's Benji Boko offers 'The Jungle V.I.P.',
a fat, pretty mature, head-nodding transformer of a tune which truly proves that a man in his early twenties actually CAN easily
sound super fly and street smart at the very same time.
The same counts for supersonic sound sensations, Gelka. These two gifted guys are based in Budapest, and their unique,
pop-laden urban blues sound on 'So Many Ways' will cast a spell on your eardrums in a split second.

Everyday (5:06)
The Top Of My Head (4:17)
Review: Jai Alai's latest release brings forth a collection of forgotten vinyl tracks that have been previously unreleased on 7" format or limited to CD-only albums. Donaldson Toussaint L'Ouverture Byrd II, to give him his full name, was a pivotal figure in jazz history and a prominent trumpeter and flugelhorn player after his stint with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in the mid-50s. Collaborating with jazz icons like John Coltrane, Thelonius Monk, and Sonny Rollins, Byrd's journey evolved into experimenting with jazz fusion, African rhythms, and r&b by the late 60s. His transformative fusion work, notably with the Blackbyrds, reshaped the jazz-funk landscape, paving the way for dance jazz on disco floors and becoming a wellspring for hip-hop samples. These are two of his many great moments of soul-drenched goodness.

Derrick Carter - "Squaredancing" (DC Nu Vox dub) (4:59)
George Alexander - "Promised Land" (feat Big John Whitfield) (3:23)
Review: This tasty release is the first instalment of BBE and Soul Clap member Eli "Bamboozle" Goldstein's "House On 45" series. The basic idea is to offer up rare and hard to find house cuts that have only ever been released on seven-inch singles. To kick things off, Goldstein has selected Derrick Carter's 2017 "DC Nu Vox Dub" of his 2002 classic "Squaredancing In A Roundhouse", an insatiable version of a killer cut rich in bluesy samples, bumpin' beats and scat vocals. Equally as impressive is George Alexander and Big John Whitfield's 2009 cover of Joe Smooth classic "Promised Land", a warm and musically expansive affair that adds superb new flute and electric piano parts to one of house music's most celebrated songs.

Christian Harmonizers - "Troubles Of The World" (3:02)
Gospel Travelers - "Jesus Is Watching You" (3:15)
Review: For those without an intimate knowledge of the private-press-dominated gospel scene of the 1960s, '70s and '80s, Greg Belson's forthcoming Divine Funk compilation of rare gospel-soul and gospel-funk offers a brilliant introduction to the sound - as does this sampler "45", one of a number being released ahead of the full collection. Christian Harmonizers' 'Troubles of the World', which sits on the A-side, is so rare and obscure that it has no Discogs entry. While that's no guarantee of quality, the track genuinely is sensational, sounding a lot like James Brown making gospel-funk rather than the sexually charged sweatiness he was known for. Turn to the B for another exceedingly hard-to-find treat: Gospel Travelers' more laidback, sweet, soulful and bluesy 'Jesus is Watching You'.

Chunky - "DOT" (Zed Bias & Metrodome remix)
Sticky Dub - "Minerals"
Giles Smith - "Hercules"
Alex Nut - "Arcade Fun" (part 1)
Review: Massive jazzdance and UK bass fusions on the new e-glowup from Eglo (though the record is also released physically). Celebrating 15 years of the nominal "post-dubstep" label, this limited 12" EP hears four exclusive, unreleased tracks from an upcoming label-definer compilation, the third in a series. Born from the basement of Plastic People, the pressure has remained continuously on Eglo to keep the same foment of bass musical innovation that the club nurtured alive. Plastic People is a routinised object of nostalgia, and it is often deemed the last proper place for innovation in bass music before austerity Britain militated against it. Zed Bias's remix of Chunky's 'Dancing On Tables' with Metrodome - and the deep, bruk-inspired track, 'Minerals,' from Liverpool's rising star Sticky Dub - both prove this assessment totally wrong. Genius thrives. On the flip, we've also house legend Giles Smith (formerly of Secretsundaze) delivering fresh material, as well as label boss Alexander Nut making his official debut with the lo-fi electro house track 'Arcade Fun Pt. 1.' The full compilation, featuring artists like Shy One, Steve Spacek, and Fatima, drops in April.

Review: Nicola Conte and Gianluca Petrella's recent album, People Need People, was one of the warmest, soulful ad most accessible sets of the year, with the experienced Italian duo combining authentic jazz instrumentation and percussion with contemporary deep house and broken beat grooves. This superb seven0=-inch single showcases two of the album's undoubted gems: the impeccable deep house soul of 'People Need People' - a wonderfully sun-soaked affair in which Petrella's impassioned vocals and vibraphone solos stretch out across a tactile groove - and the downtempo, spoken word-laden hip-hop/jazz fusion of 'The Higher Love'. In a word: essential.

African Spirits (Andres extended remix) (5:33)
Review: Nicola Conte is one of the central figures in the Schema story, and his nu jazz and broken beat partnership with Gianluca Petrella has yielded some golden music in recent years. Nigeria originally came out in 2018, and then last year popped up on the duo's People Need People LP, but now it's getting a proper remix treatment which sees Tall Black Guy twisting the track out as a heady disco house roller for sundown moments when you need a little jazzy flair in the proceedings. That version comes in vocal and instrumental versions, and then the mighty Andres steps up for one of his simmering groove escapades as he delivers an extended remix of 'African Spirits'.

Their recent album found them exploring a wide range of music in our globalised world with nods to Detroit, disco, house, and jazz. Now Berlin-based New York don Fred P offers up two of his reinterpretations. They are of course long, deep, spiritual and moving in both physical and emotional ways.

Inner Light Joaquin Joe Claussell Sacred Rhythm (Cosmic Arts dub version) (10:11)
Review: Something of an all-star affair here, as Sacred Rhythm main man Joaquin "Joe" Clausell sprinkles some of his remix magic over 'Inner Light', one of the standout cuts from Nicola Conte and Gianluca Petrella's 2021 album People Need People. Whereas the original was a richly percussive, dubbed-out future jazz-goes-dub house affair, Clausell's versions are warmer, looser, jazzier and deeper. Check first the A-side 'Cosmic Arts Version', where Rasahan Ahmad's poetic spoken word vocal rises above broken beats, layered jazz horns, warm bass, glistening guitar kicks and warming electric piano keys. The flipside 'Cosmic Arts Version' is, if anything, even better, delivering dubbed-out percussion, mazy trumpet solos and trippy effects aplenty. In a word: essential!

Jones's soulful vocals seamlessly float as he serves up smooth lyrics that perfectly complement the infectious groove crafted by Cool Million. Deep house don Chez Damier's Panorama Bar Remix kicks off and is a a 2021 standout with a killer baseline and Spanish guitar that brings some sunny soul and makes for some top level house grooves. Makez then shines with 'Rocket Music' which has a chunky low end and glistening, golden piano chords making it a late night favourite. It has never been available as a single before and with the brass build and funky groove, it's irresistible. Aretha Franklin - "Rock Steady" (DJ Soopasoul edit) (3:30)
Review: Fast-fingered mash-up merchant and lauded scalpel fiend DJ Soopasoul can usually be relied upon to bring the goods. In fact, we've yet to hear an edition of his "Soopastole Edits" series that doesn't include the kind of sure-fire, party-starting fare guaranteed to get any DJ out of a dancefloor hole of their own making. Review: Last year, Mother Tongue Records released Madre Lingua, an album of all-star collaborations between broken beat and deep house musicians and producers helmed by Verona-based Brit Patrick Gibin. This 12" updates two of the tracks from the set, with Gibin once again to the fore. On side A, he joins forces with long-time friend and studio buddy Kaidi Tatham to remix EDB and Gary Superfly's 'Pressure'. On the A-side you'll find Four Below Zero's 1976 modern soul scene anthem 'My Baby's Got E.S.P' (originally simply titled 'E.S.P', fact fans), a sing-along treat that arguably counts as one of Adams' most accessible and straight-forward productions (this is not a criticism, by the way, just recognition that he made some seriously bonkers disco and boogie records over the years). Over on the flip it's all about the Peter Brown co-produced 'The Guardian Angel is Watching Over Us', a rare 1979 cut that features a sublime lead vocal from Margo Williams. Stranger (4:32)
Bloodline (3:52)
Review: A new four-track EP reflecting ever-expanded horizons for the band, 'Bloodline' is the latest output from loose-limbed, soul-stirring funk band Gabriels. Quickly finding fans in the likes of Elton John, Celeste, Paul Weller, Benji B, and Gilles Peterson, Gabriels should soon find plenty more on a record that could soundtrack a David Lynch epic; such is its drama, its suspenseful, late-night orchestral ruminations. Capped by frontman Lusk's voice - a weapon that swoops through the octaves breathlessly - Gabriels have that rare ability to make you re-evaluate music, and what it can do, in a heartbeat. Whilst Lusk provides the wow factor with that ridiculous larynx, Gabriels are very much a close-knit trio. Producer, keyboardist (and full-time video director) Ryan Hope hails from Sunderland but calls LA home. Fellow producer-composer and violinist Ari Balouzian, a man with endless musical projects on the go at any one time, gives Gabriels' songs a real 'feel' to them. Sultry, soulful mood music certainly isn't the band's modus operandi, but this new experimental EP should paint an altogether more rounded idea of where Gabriels are at today.

Bowl
Review: The renewed Apollo imprint continues its fast moving release schedule with the debut release from Gacha. Fitting in with the label's cloudy, effervescent aesthetic instantly, "Remember" combines pitched down vocals, dreamy guitars and gentle bass over a half-stepping groove. "Bowl" meanwhile is more obviously aimed at the floor, with a rolling garage rhythm that seems to phase in and out around gentle chords swathed in tape delay.

Samba De Sausalito (The Invisible Session rework) (5:09)
Review: Galathea's self titled debut long player from 2021 picked up high fan and critical praise around the world for its unique blend of tropical vibes and a wide array of genres. Oe of the many standout on it was the 'Samba De Sausalito' tune, which was originally composed by Nicaraguan percussionist Chose "Chepito" Areas. It now gets pressed up in slightly different form as with a new mix on the flip on this 7" on Space Echo. The a-side is a driving groove for the club with layered chords and hypnotic synths and the reverse is a different beast. It mixes up the original samba vibes with fresh Afro touches from The Invisible Session to explosive effect.

Review: Massimo Napoli is Galathea and he is still riding high off the success of his second album Sacred Love. Now he backs up the quality of that one with this new EP on Space Echo which features four unreleased tracks. 'Ancestral' and 'Karimabao' on the A-side feature hypnotic atmospheres and blend African rhythms with tribal percussion and sleek pads to make for a rather addictive fusion for sophisticated dancefloors. 'Africa Carnival' then offers an Afrobeat groove infused with Brazilian spirit and plenty of jazz, and funk all added to by Mario Pappalardo's masterful keyboard work. The EP closes with 'Sacred Club,' a track which mixes up African mysticism with a danceable, clap-driven rhythm that is perfect for a more subdued yet entrancing dancefloor experience.

Sacred Love (feat Giulia La Rosa (Clapping version)) (4:19)
Review: As Galathea, Sicilian producer Massimo Napoli has been cooking up some outstanding cuts for the Italian Space Echo label over the past couple of years. Afro-Latin rhythms, soul jazz, dub and more besides all feed into his sound, which manifests perfectly on this new single fronted by vocalist Giulia La Rosa. 'Sacred Love' has a stripped-back, minimalist approach which makes it all the more potent, as Napoli exercises a restraint which creates drama and tension in the negative space around the groove. La Rosa's smouldering vocal is the icing on the cake for this deep, funky cut which will turn heads each and every time it gets dropped.

The Galaxy Sound Co's latest 7" kicks off with a remastered edit of 'Passion Play' by The Sugarhill Gang. It's a tune that was originally on their self-titled 1980 album and comes with background vocals from the superb funk and soul band Positive Force. Somehow the tune didn't make the charts at the time though it has been heavily referenced and sampled since, including by the likes of Kerri Chandler. The B-side is 'Who Is She (And What Is She to You)', a soul-jazz cover of a Bill Withers classic taken from Madelaine's only album, Who Is She, in 1978. It has a serious Chicago pedigree and great arrangements from Johnny Pate.

Review: The long-running Galaxy Sound Co imprint has been responsible for some superb re-edits over the years, most of which are pleasingly purist in tone (I.E they're rearrangements with a few added effects but no needless new beats or cheap trickery). Their latest double-header of edits fits in this category and come courtesy of Thelonious Beats. A-side "The Vulture" is a fine chunk of string-laden Blaxploitation-era dancefloor soul that wisely loops up the drum breaks from their fine source track before introducing the music and vocals. Side B's "Get Together" is given a "Gospel Time Edit", with sweet group harmony vocals and an eyes-closed lead vocal rising above Billy Preston style organ and a jazzy funk-soul backing track.

Review: So the legend goes: Tokyo dance music aficionados DJs Nori, Fukuba, Alex From Tokyo, and Kenji Hasegawa came together sometime in 2003, with but one ultimate goal: to bring together, in their own words, the best music, with the best sound system, the best hospitality, by the best management staff, in the best location. The result was Gallery Connection, a venue and soundsystem situated right next to Omotesando station, in the the heart of the city's upscale cultural rampart, Harajuku. Famously held on Sunday afternoons, this dream team's party is once again started with two reissued versions of their original CD fixture and DJ set go-to, 'Smile', flaunting its stylistic versatility: a signature Balearic-scenic Shibuya-kei track that resounds in memory as the time-honoured party's de facto theme tune.

Review: Yet two more Brownswood bubblers rise to the surface, this time under the well-organised branch of the tree known as Brownswood Remix Editions, which does what it says on the lovey-dovey carving. Here, back-to-back debutants Musclecars and Laroye receive the Olympic torch from London-based acid jazz group Galliano, who've blazed a thick trail of flame since their original formation in 1988, not to mention a recent reformation in 2023. 'Pleasure, Joy & Happiness' hears a house musical chorale from Musclecars, with added vocal mystifications threshed in the stereo field, producing a Balearic effect. Laroye's version of 'Circles Going Round The Sun' brings swelling "Kaytra" grooves and bumper drums to an anticipatory mood, provided by the original's solo siren song and urban monologue.

Review: Soul Supreme is a master keyboardist best known for his covers of classic hip-hop songs by the likes of Mos Def, MF Doom and A Tribe Called Quest. Here side-steps his covers duties to handle remix productions for two of his contemporaries in the Netherlands neo-soul scene - Gallowstreet, LYMA, Shamis and Rebiere. The A side lends a wonky future house feel (a-la GoldLink, Crackazat) to '52 North', Gallowstreet's ode to the city of Amsterdam. The B tune strips it back to a lo-fi soul bapper, fleshing out its theme of loneliness in parenting.

Do It Right Now (2:42)
Review: Originally released in 1967 on Sack Records Mamie P. Galore's 'No Right To Cry' is not only one of the most desireable Northern Soul 45s ever, commanding sometimes over a thousand dolllars, but also one of the most guaranteed floor fillers if you love a mid-tempo soulful Chicago groove. Now, Secret Stash, the independent record label from Minneapolis, devoted to preserving and reissuing rare gems not only bring you this first time reissue on 7" but back it, as in the original pressing with what has been considered Galore's much overlooked masterpiece 'Do It Right Now'. This immense churchy organ driven track with resounding trombone and baritone sax combo cushion Galore's voice in ballad mode, backed with a sweet and lyrical female chorus. This B-side beautifully compliments the A-side's bouncing, organ vamping, lead guitar riffing four beats to the bar, driving Galore's glorious r&b tone, highlighted by the harmonics of her singers... So, enjoy the drop at about 1.36 with them and then keep going, and oh... There's only 250 hand numbered copies available worldwide - so get in quick!!

Review: Russian label Udacha are purveyors of dreamy and mysterious deep house. This new one by Gamayun is further testament to their current modus operandi. On the first side we have "Roundelay" with its warped and ethereal tropical vibe, assisting you in drifting away from it all just nicely. Next the soothing piano line of "All Tomorrows" backed by a wacky bassline and restrained rhythm section is equally as mesmerising. On the flip we have "Outlands" with its swirling, all consuming pads backed by sultry Latin style rhythms and that killer synth solo. Lastly there's "Oracle" with its sweet, late nineties deep house vibes that fans of Agnes and Quarion would be right into.

Review: Surely one of the finest record labels operating out of Russia right now, Udacha welcomes Gamayun back for a second time to admirably dive into the particular spirit that surrounds the label. Somewhere between loose-fit soulful house grooves you might hear on Downbeat and a more mystical, far-out spirit, this mysterious producer is a dab hand at weaving a particularly enchanting spell. The jazzy fluidity of "C-Music" could easily sit alongside some of Vakula's more wayward works, while "Aerial Dance" pirouettes off into an abstract rhythmic space that truly stimulates even as it confuses. Records this fresh-sounding don't roll around every day.

Review: Given that Gang Starr recently reformed and jazz is now all the rage, it seems fitting that Mr Bongo has decided to reissue the rare 7" version of the group's 1990 masterpiece "Jazz Thing". It's a wholehearted tribute to the greats of jazz - and the role jazz records have in hip-hop's sample culture - that comes in two distinctively different mixes. On the A-side you'll find the "Video Mix", a bouncy and suitably jazzy DJ Premier production that layers Guru's fine rap flows above loose-limbed drums, smoky horn samples and his own super-tight scratches. Turn to side B for the "Movie Mix" - so-called because it was created for a Spike Lee flick - where Guru's vocal rides improvised horns and an entirely different beat crafted from Kool & The Gang samples.

Presented on limited edition turquoise marbled vinyl it opens with Makaya McCraven's airy and floaty light remix of 'Source' before DJ Tahira layers up 'Stand With Each Other' with ethno-grooves that are loose and off kilter. Review: This self-released EP features two newly recorded compositions from the much lauded saxophonist, composer and bandleader Nubya Garcia. She stated that inspiration came from producers such as Ben Hayes, Tom Misch, Joe Armon- Jones, Jake Long and Maxwell Owin (whom she has recently surrounded herself with) and that this release feels like a positive evolution from her last EP. There was an electronic vibe that she wanted to explore and that is rather evident on When We Are. The record also comes with B-side remixes from two generations of London's finest producers: K-15 and Maxwell Owin. The record offers a snapshot of the artist she is today and the organic musical languages she continues to form with her long term collaborators Femi Koleoso, Joe Armon-Jones and Daniel Casimir. A trademark fusion of gospel, soul, broken beat, Afro-Caribbean and Latin styles that Garcia has deftly crafted into her own.
