Jay Sound - "Reflections Of Love" (feat Josefine) (6:33)
Review: Fusion Sequence is a new offshoot from the Mellophonia label that kicks off with a heavyweight release both literally - its 180g vinyl - and metaphorically. It features seven different artists offering up one track each on what is a widescreen exploration of fresh deep house. They are A Vision of Panorama, Eternal Love, Pool Boy, Wolfey, Laseech, Larry Quest and Jay Sound and between them everything from cuddly depths to more moody late-night deepness is covered on an EP that brings plenty of new perspectives. A fine inaugural 12", then.

Review: Rashied Ali had a unique talent for transforming unlikely sound pairings into masterpieces. Following Interstellar Space with John Coltrane and Duo Exchange with Frank Lowe, he joined forces with violinist Leroy Jenkins for this album in 1975. Jenkins was fresh from the Revolutionary Ensemble and composed all pieces for this rare duet, which is now reissued on vinyl for the first time in nearly half a century. The deluxe set includes an unreleased session exploring standards, the sounds of Coltrane and some truly wild improvisations. A top treasure for jazz-heads.

Review: Scott Monteith is the Berlin-based but Canadian-born artist best known as Deadbeat, stepping out with new alias Ark Welders Guild. It is an audio-visual performance and recording project with Italian singer and curator Letizia Trussi, whom he met in winter 2021 and has since formed a strong creative bond. They work in Trussi's Rooms of Kairos studio and have already cooked up two album length pieces that come on Monteith's BLKRTZ imprint. Mons Clepsydra is the first and is an epic drone in four parts with string recordings permeating the moody, grainy, heavy atmospheres.

Review: In 2018, three-time Grammy Award-winning violinist Hilary Hahn returned to classical label-behemoth Deutsche Grammophon (her usual) for an official album of interpretations of J.S. Bach's violin concertos, in collaboration with Jeffery Kahane and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. The much-celebrated fiddler laid down a stunning, full rendition of the concertos, all recorded at the Colburn School Of Performing Arts and which added to her huge repertoire. This stealth reissue from the classical music giant bolsters Hahn's rep once more.

Ros Bandt - "Ocean Bells" (17:50)
LIME - "Shifts" (8:35)
LIME - "Annapurna" (9:22)
Review: Gong bath, anyone? Soft & Fragile is a three track outing built on a framework of custom made bells and chimes, at least one of which was created by the artist - namely Bandt's 'flagong', a three-story glass marimba the musician crafted in the late-1970s, apparently inspired by the so-called 'cloud chamber bowls' of Harry Patch, a chap known for developing weird and wonderful sound-making devices.

She uses the instrument to stunning effect solo on the opening effort, 'Ocean Bells', creating a gently flowing arrangement that sucks you in quickly. From there, she's joined by Julie Doyle, Gavan McCarthy, and Carolyn Robb to complete the full LIME (Live Improvised Music Events) lineup, and the work becomes more complex still, without ever being overbearing or overly theoretical.

Review: Pierre Bastien has a strong team record of interesting collaborations. He's done stuff with fashion designer and scent mogul Issey Miyake, legendary singer and composer Robert Wyatt, and the enigmatic electronic producer and reality-shifter Aphex Twin, releasing no less than three full length records on the latter's landmark label, Rephlex. "A mad musical scientist", the Guardian once quipped, and C(or)N(e)T doesn't break from that tradition. Instead, it offers some of the most abstract and strange, beguiling and fascinating sounds we've heard in a while. At least a few of which have been made on self-made, bespoke pieces of equipment. At a push, you might label this jazz, for the simple fact it's so free-form and avant-garde. Realistically, though, it sounds like the noises that might happen if someone attempted to tame a pack of rogue electronic hubbub-chatting things in a vaguely structured way. "Thank fuck for Pierre Bastien", the Quietus once said. We happily concur.

Review: Lil Yachty and James Blake's Bad Cameo showcases their fearless creativity, blending Yachty's dynamic vocals with Blake's signature production. Tracks like 'Missing Man' and 'Transport Me' shine with captivating depth, while 'Red Carpet' offers a soulful, gospel-infused highlight. The album's experimental nature, especially on tracks like 'Save the Savior' and 'Midnight', reflects the duo's bold approach, pushing boundaries with each song. Even in its unexpected turns, Bad Cameo remains an exciting exploration of sound. Available on limited magenta vinyl, this release is a fresh, innovative take from two artists unafraid to try something new.

Review: Den Helder is the northernmost city in Holland, is surrounded by water and borders the North Sea. With a military history dating back to the 16th century, it is also the most bombed city in the Netherlands and was nearly destroyed during World War II. The Third of May was written and recorded in 2020 over six days in an old pumping station located in the dunes of Huisduinen near Den Helder. The story behind the album is set in this historic city, weaving its tumultuous past into a vivid, imagined narrative inspired by the area's rich and tragic history. It's as much of an emotional rollercoaster as you would expect given the concept.

Review: Record Store Day and Black Friday 2023 continue to serve up the treasure even now as we roll into 2024. This latest pice, Creative Improvisation Ensemble, is from Marion Brown and Leo Smith who explore an experimental and avant-garde world of challenging jazz. It is freeform, unbound by rules and expectations and very much keeps you on your toes as the saxophones burst to life, express tortured emotions and peel away to nothing. Some cuts are more heavily percussive with tribal drums like 'And Then They Danced' and others are persuasive numbers that make you move.

Review: In March 2023, composer, arranger, and alto saxophonist Cassie Kinoshi debuted her commissioned suite, Gratitude, at London's Southbank Centre. Featuring her flagship ensemble seed. in a unique augmented formation alongside turntablist NikNak and the London Contemporary Orchestra (LCO), the sold-out event marked a milestone. Known for her work with seed. and Kokoroko, Kinoshi's compositional prowess extends across various mediums. Gratitude now showcases her textured and dynamic sound as it traverses from groove-focused modal melancholia to anthemic brass and string themes. Inspired by her mother and her own mental health journey, Kinoshi's creation resonates deeply, reflecting the soul of contemporary Black London with the craftsmanship of legendary jazz arrangers.

Review: Chestnut People finds NAFF champ Priori teaming up with Ludwig A.F. for some deep-diving trips somewhere between ambient, trance, deep house and techno. It's a sweetly melodic space where immersive beatdowns can sit comfortably alongside blissfully beatless meditations, leading in with the dreamy breakbeat roll of 'I' and the snappy drum blasts of 'II'. It's the B-side where the project's sound really deepens, finding new scope for aqueous sound design and fragmented electronica on 'III' before the pure, new age leaning melt-out of 'IV'. It's a sophisticated record with a sound that should draw in a huge spectrum of machine dreamers.

Review: Polish producer Latarnik and American vocalist Anthony Mills collide on this new album for Polish label Astigmatic to explore lo-fi hip-hop, soul, dub and experimental electronics. Mills's falsetto vocal brings great Neo-soul warmth to Crack Rock with emotionally charged tones soaring over the production which ranges from sugary and 80s-tinged disco and boogie on 'Crack' to deep, seductive and gooey on 'Passive Lover' which is a more romantic sound. Latarnik's work is often minimal yet immersive which creates space for Mills' voice to shine and is delivered in equal parts spoken word, chant and soulful croon. The hypnotic, slow-burning soundscapes that result are both intimate and confrontational, ready to make you dance but also often just to feel. Unapologetically raw and deeply human, this one lingers long after the final track ends.

Review: Hardcore Philly rappers Da Buze Bruvaz, aka Him-LO and Clever One, have been coming up strong on their Grilchy Party label in the past couple of years. A lot of their work has been with Lord Beatjitzu, who once again mans the buttons on this vinyl pressing of the CDr release, complete with kung-fu movie iconography emblazoned on the cover and some hard as nails beats to back up the drunken, lyrical devastation from the duo on the mic. This record serves as a companion piece to the Bruce Li album the three-strong team have got coming in tandem with this joint, so cop both and get yourself up on the real deal coming straight out of Philly.

Review: When Marie Davidson announced last year that she would be, "retiring from club music", many wondered what she'd do next. Renegade Breakdown, her first album recorded with a full band (L'Oeil Nu), answers that question. It sees the Canadian artist and her new collaborators deliver suitably arresting, personal and ear-catching songs built on mixing and matching a surprisingly wide variety of musical inspirations, from Blondie, classic disco and mutilated heavy metal guitars, to Kraftwerk, Billie Holiday, Fleetwood Mac and Daft Punk. It's a big shift for the previously highly experimental artist, but thanks to her skill as both a a producer and performer, one that works magnificently well.

Review: DjeuhDjoah & Lieutenant Nicholson pivot decisively toward movement - physical, emotional, and spiritual - on their fourth record. The French duo channel their lyrical and tonal warmth into a ten-track celebration of rhythm in all its forms, gliding nimbly over funk, ndombolo, electro, hip-hop, zouk, and more: an underfoot patchwork and bipedal soul food for thought. Beneath breezy deliveries and playful turns of phrase lie reflections on transidentity, consent, and social precarity, as such subjects are approached with wit, compassion, and an instinctive sense of space. Collaborators like Anthony Hilaire, Sarah Solo, Patrick Bebey, and Gregoire Mahe deepen the texture, threading Creole poetry, pygmy flute, and electro-soukous flair, and electronic charge: the result brims with an 80s tinge, inciting a a joyful, conscious invitation to dance, think, and feel all at once.

The former singles 'Pas si vite' and 'Caipirinha' now form integral parts to a full, album, '2 Plus', on which a whopping 13 more tracks follow. Packed with bright, choral vocals ('Planete') and colliery tones ('Bwe Dlo'), this is an impressive and sunny saunter through French-Brazilian neo-soul and house.

Review: To say Philippe Doray and his Asociaux Associes finished the 1970s with creative fervour would be an understatement. First we had 1976's Ramasse-Miettes Nucleaires, then two years after that there was the equally potent Nouveaux Modes Industriels. Both were heralded as ahead of their time, at the time, bringing together strange, otherworldly pop, spacey prog, prototypes of Krautrock and impassioned poetry. Le Composant Compositeur followed, and in their own words marked the beginning of a new era in the 'Antisocial Associates' project (to use the English translation). It's a marvellous addition to the collection, too, a series of sharp, edgy, mutant pop tracks, weirdo brass experimentation, compressed electro, dubby ideas, and twisted, acid-spiked fairground themes.

Vocalist Liz Elensky has been part of the project since 2006 and this album finds the duo head in a new direction that delves deep into electronic sounds but with soulful jazz vibrations and contributions from the likes of Rocketnumbernine, The Maghreban and Khalab & Jesica Lauren amongst others. It results in an album that is as alluring as it is inventive.

The Great Prayer (6:50)
Review: The third album from Levon Eskenian's remarkable ensemble is its most adventurous to date. As well as reclaiming the music of esoteric teacher G. I. Gurdjieff for folk instrumentation, Zartir situates Gurdjieff in a tradition of Armenian bards and troubadours including Ashugh Jivani, Baghdasar Tbir and the legendary Sayat-Nova. In parallel, an emphasis on pieces for sacred dance reaches its apex in The Great Prayer, an entrancing collaboration between the Gurdjieff Ensemble and the National Chamber Choir of Armenia, which draws upon ritual music of multiple faiths. Arranger Eskenian says, "I believe The Great Prayer is more than a mere 'composition'. It is one of the most profound and transformative pieces I have encountered in Gurdjieff's work." Zartir was recorded in Yerevan in 2021 and mixed and completed in Munich in November 2022 by Levon Eskenian, Tigran Kuzikyan, and Manfred Eicher.

Review: Mercy is a collaborative work between the late great Lee "Scratch" Perry (during his post-Black Ark Studios era), Peter Harris and Fritz Catlin, the drummer from the industrial funk dub act 23 Skidoo. What they cook up is unashamedly experimental outsider works that collide mad mixing desk trickery, Perry's trademark vocal mutterings and plenty of occult sound designs. Melodies are smeared and smudged, rhythms are drunk and off balance and moods range from balmy to bonkers, often within the same damn track. A maverick collage, for sure.

Review: We all know that Matthew Herbert is a far out sonic experimenter who will look to make music with and from anything. But this project might be his most outlandish and extraordinary to date. It starts with him looking for the largest possible animal skeleton to explore though music. He settled on a full size horse and from that made flutes from its thigh bones and bows from ribs and hair. Gut strings stretched over the pelvis feature in the mid-section and even more bizarre than that is the fact he travelled to ancient cave paintings of horses in Northern Spain to record reverb at their door. Brilliantly bonkers as ever.

Review: Popularly known to fans as "Ice" - a rare case of hypocorism in colloquial fan band nicknaming - Strut Recordings document a rare record from the vaults of the luminary Lafayette Afro-Rock Band, one that is arguably the closest in their catalogue to the signature sound defining their earlier work. Marked by an especially complex funk rhythmology, this record was pressed contemporaneously with the infamous Soul Makossa and Malik sessions; but compared to their earlier works, Afro Agban pushes deeper into jazz-rock territory. 'Ozan Koukle' has espceially become a known but coveted missing link for turntable taxonomists, who'll thank their lucky stars for the fact that it is now available in full.

Review: Ice's early work captures a pivotal moment in funk's evolution, weaving together taut grooves and vibrant African-inspired rhythms. Recorded during the band's formative years, the music brims with raw energy and creative ambition. Polished basslines drive the tracks, while percussion bursts with a vitality that speaks to their Parisian influences at the time. Horn stabs and tightly wound guitar lines add layers of complexity, and the occasional vocal inflection injects a sense of urgency. With each listen, the production reveals new texturesismall details that elevate the record beyond its era.

With all four tracks handled by French producer and remixer The Reflex, we know we're in good hands here - he's been at it since 2012. Reflex Revisions don't just add a janky kick beneath a beatgridded 16-bar loop, but rather, they move and sway with the tracks' original feels. Our case in point: 'A Little Love' completely reimagines the drum section found on Aurra's 1983 original, making the whole sonic experience much clearer and brighter. As much can be said for Metropolis' downtempo 'I Love New York', on which Reflex here makes the song grander, wider. Compared to most re-editors, this is an impressive feat occurring in a different ballpark.

Review: Whitney Johnson and Lia Kohl's debut album has evolved over several years. Its roots lay in their shared practice of free improvisation on viola and cello and flourished into a unique neophonic orchestral expression. That makes For Translucence both stimulating and soothing - a very alive form of musical meditation where layers of acoustic strings, wispy synths, evocative field recordings and radio and sine waves intertwine and grow while mesmerising you even more. Though always moving and shapeshifting the effect is cathartic as a fine balance is struck between experimentation and cohesion and the organic and the electronic.

Review: Insane boogie fire from Rio circa 82; both Robson Jorge and Lincoln Olivetti were already decorated before they joined forces, but this one took both of their reputations and amplified them beyond expectation. Their one and only album, it's loaded with soul and funk from every corner of Brazil's sexy city and brought together with beautiful attention to detail; the gradual vocal breakdowns, rude synths and lavish instrumental sections, key cuts such as the Wonder-level "Aleluia", the jazz slides and glides of "Pret-A-Porter" and the sexy 80s electro boogie "Squash" will still completely flip any party 35 years later. Stunning.

Review: Kid Abstrakt represents the timely and true 90s jazz-rap sound in the present day, consciously carrying on the legacy of the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul and The Pharcyde. Still Dreaming is his latest album in collaboration with beatmaker Leo Low Pass: it's a 12-piece, feature-packed gem full of warm lo-fi-isms and reminiscences. To further help introduce you to Abstrakt's world, memory and nostalgia is central to the project; the highlight 'Young Dreamers' opens with hm revisiting the same playground in which he used to play as a child, now treating it as a fitting backdrop over which he can rap. Ultimately, jazz, lo-fi and boom-bap all collide on this album for a heavy dose of ear-injectable post-90s nostalgia.

Review: A stunning album of big band music from Finnish composer, Kerkko Koskinen, featuring Linda Fredriksson on saxophone and the UMO Helskinki Jazz Orchestra, Agatha 2 is a sequel of sorts to their original Agatha album released in 2007. Tracing Koskinen's signature immensely emotive and dramatic approach to composition, this album sits beautifully between moody atmospheres and fully immersive rushes of cinematic sound. It is clear that Fredrikkson and Koskinen share a clear vision with her solo performances shining against the undulating orchestral backdrop. Taking on a distinctly melancholic and nostalgic mood, especially with the pieces 'Promenade' and 'Piana', the drums are positioned at a purposeful distance to the driving dynamics of the composition, adding a hint of melodic colour to the overall piece rather than being a central force. An inventive project that journeys forwards and backwards in time.

Review: Ultra lo-fi stereo funkage from L'Eclair, the latest signage to Swiss label Rock This Town. 'Cruise Control' is a muddy and smoggy six-track instrumental disco-funk EP, with seven members laying down parts on wah-wah, space horn, and synth. It sounds as if a mega-talented disco troupe were performing in the next building, but they could only be heard through thick insulation or some kind of muffling foam. The tone is ultimately pleasing, blurry and cloudlike, as if this were disco beamed to us from heaven as opposed to the material world. The softest cuts, such as 'Safari In D', are our highlights.

Review: There has been plenty said about debutants L'Epee since their single "Dreams" turned heads back in spring. Combining the talents of Anton Newcombe (The Brian Jonestown Massacre), French artist Emmanuelle Seigner, and polished-to-a-sheen pop outfit The Liminanas, it's one of the most refreshing (and French) things you're likely to hear all year. That's more of a reference to the cinematic feeling that defines the album, owing much to the femme fatale vocal delivery, rather than the language each line is sung in. At once evoking the smoky cool of Serge Gainsbourg and the opiate moods of The Velvet Underground, "Diabolique" feels born in a time when psychedelic experimentation and chart topping music weren't mutually exclusive. At once sophisticated and hedonistic, it's a sexy, sensual and overwhelmingly seductive effort everyone should turn themselves on to.

Review: Now released for the first time on vinyl in the UK, Parisian Nu-Disco sextet L'Imperatrice's 3rd EP Odyssee, released in 2015, was a 6-track journey through the dreamy, vintage sound of French disco-pop. Rereleased and renamed a year later under L'Empereur at a different speed, this gatefold contains the original EP as well as acoustic renditions of five tracks, plus a bonus track in Interlune, a strings piece that flows into the string instrumental of La Lune (Version Acoustique). The smooth bass and layered synth will hook you, but you'll stay for the vocal talents of Flore Benguigui who joined the outlet that same year. Her smooth tones are like melted butter against the bass. Odysee was a bold step for the band - but one that proved wildly successful and was just the beginning of the symphonic formula that L'Imperatrice has continued to refine to this day.

Review: The Night Took Us In Like Family is the first collaborative album from American producer L'Orange and cultured rapper Jeremiah Jae. The Mellow Music label originally released it back in 2015 and it performed well with some fine guest appearances from Gift of Gab and Homebody Sandman. The album is rife with beautiful storytelling from Jae who delivers his ideas in a gangsta rap style but the first-rate beats are more soulful, giving rise to a style the pair called 'noir hop'. They are louche, lo-fi and drawn from the golden era of boom-bap with plenty of smart samples.

Overflowing with body jerking industrial, raw acid/techno, the album hints of the warehouse sound of the late '90s and the caustic spirit of EBM. From opener "Cru" to "One Terminal", the eight tracks thread together; each starting point completely open, each new step informed by the last, shaped by emotion, inspiration and time.

Ill Bill, formerly of Non Phixion, brings his signature dark lyricism; Danny Boy made his name with House of Pain; Slaine cut his teeth in La Coka Nostra and Boston's unctuous underground; DJ Lethal's production chops span from Cypress Hilly boom-bap to Limp Bizkit era chaos; and DJ Eclipse, a key figure in NYC's pirate radio scene, downs anchor on the crew's sound. Production comes from DJ Premier, Statik Selektah and DJ Lethal himself, ensuring a retentive grittiness, while guest spots from Vinnie Paz and the late Sean Price help the crew hammer hone a collective lyrical point.

Review: La Femme's Rock Machine marks a bold new chapter for the French neo-psych band, delivering their first full-length album in English. After exploring various sonic territories with Paradigmes and Teatro Lucido, the band, led by Marlon Magnee and Sacha Got, revisits their signature new wave and synth-driven style, blending it with influences from 80s and 90s Anglo rock. The album kicks off with the stylish, glam-infused single 'Clover Paradise', setting the tone for a project that seamlessly fuses genres like electro, surf rock, and disco, all wrapped in a punk spirit. From the synthwave of 'Sweet Babe' to the rebellious energy of 'My Generation', La Femme's sound is eclectic yet cohesive. Tracks like 'Venus' evoke a nostalgic mix of 60s psych-pop, while 'Love Is Over' channels the danceable grooves of the Madchester era. Throughout Rock Machine, the band's creativity shines as they confidently experiment with arena-sized rock styles and cinematic soundscapes. This album proves La Femme's ability to transcend language and genre, reinforcing their status as musical innovators.

The pandemic led her to pause her music career as she returned to Sweden from Berlin, putting her Pharmaceutical Science degree to work in Stockholm's hospitals. This significant life shift followed a decade of running her Power Plant label and accomplishments like being named Mixmag's breakthrough artist, releasing an Essential Mix, and performing at major festivals like Creamfields and Awakenings. During this hiatus, La Fleur reflected on her artistic direction through her challenging time. Originally planning to release her debut in 2020, she instead waited until the timing felt right. 'Vasen' is a sleek, emotionally resonant exploration of house and techno, a collection born from both personal and musical growth that finally feels ready for the world to experience.

Born from guitarist Shana Cleveland's battle with breast cancer, the album traverses themes of life, death, and transformation with haunting beauty. The band's sonic palette, led by Cleveland's ethereal vocals and anchored by urgent rhythms, paints a vivid portrait of chaos and ecstasy. Produced entirely by women, the album embodies a fierce femininity, embracing vulnerability and triumph in equal measure. With lush chamber pop melodies and searing guitar solos, News of the Universe shows La Luz's pioneering spirit and unwavering commitment to artistic authenticity. Created after her long illness and her father's death, it parallels the planet's delicate state and the duality of joy and mortality in life. Written in Berlin and Munich, the artist connects past, present, and future as she sings in English, Polish, and Arabic. Review: A to-the-T emulation of a classic coldwave/post-punk sound is heard on this debut album by La Nuit Je Mens, a duo split between the Parisian suburbs and southern Italy. Now based in Rome, the pair have come up with a proper synthoid slammer, commandeering a fleet of analogue machines, each member in their own independent wheelhouse. Both artists take up vocals, exploring such tragicomic themes as the slow decline of the clubbing scene and clandestine goings-on in the nostal-chic European underground scene, marking out a sordid subconscious below ostensibly blank progressions. Huge degrees of texture, harmonic range and dynamism are packed into these otherwise rawly armed recordings, with 'Posterite Du Soleil' in particular fitting an immensity of new wave gothic romance into a narrow four-instrument limitation.

Review: Seattle, so much to answer for. The capital of the Pacific Northwest has had a difficult history in terms of its cultural capital, from a thriving pre-war jazz scene to regulatory changes that drove out many clubs and turned music into a sideshow for restaurants, to the beginnings of punk which then led to the explosion of grunge, if one thing is for sure, you should always listen keenly to what's coming out of the city. La Paire D'Or are a case in point. Here with their debut "waxing", as the Hex Enduction label put it, it's very difficult to figure out how to describe or even label what's here beyond "trippier than most". Steeped in psychedelia, owing as much to synths and gritty garage guitars, at times their tracks are thick, sludgy, perhaps even growly, in other moments they seem to be floating off on a bed of helium, destination unknown.

Review: La Pambele, Bogota's salsa dura ensemble, distills the spirit of 1970s salsa while threading modern-day stories through every track. Their energetic and heartfelt music is a celebration of the culture that's so intrinsic to their city, blending bold rhythms with lyrics that hit close to home. In a city often perceived as less rhythmically charged than the coastal regions, the band defies the stereotype, delivering tracks like 'Para No Olvidar' and 'La Bella Y La Culebra' that pulse with energy and authenticity. 'Naci Mestizo', the album's title track, sees La Pambele collaborate with the seasoned Afro-Colombian folklorist Nicoyembe, adding layers of cultural depth and richness that further root the sound in Colombian heritage. The mix of piano, conga, flute, and brass on songs like 'Amargura' and 'Son Cimarron' carries a nostalgic yet forward-thinking energy, embracing the past while pushing boundaries. There's a warmth and precision in the way the orchestra weaves traditional salsa with contemporary expressions, effortlessly moving between nostalgia and modern relevance, all while telling the story of the everyday Bogotano in its boldest form.

This self titled album is the only one the short-lived outfit ever released and it came in 1976. It's a fine fusion of jazz and funk with plenty of Latin flair and rich percussive layers, lead wind instruments and danceable disco grooves that bring real colour and vitality to the dance floor. Review: A cultish band who there at the dawn of psychedelic rock in Mexico and had a mind-bendingly beautiful sound full of revolutionary potential. In the late 60s when they formed and in the early 70s when this self-titled debut LP of theirs was released, the band were inspired by hippy counterculture and by politics. They're named after Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata whose influence still has a far-reaching influence today - the Zapatista social movement, with its far-left and anti-neoliberal ideology, takes its name from him. They were also at the forefront of La Onda (The Wave), a cultural and political movement that spawned Mexico's answer to Woodstock, Avandaro. Sonically, you can't get a better fit for a festival of that sort - you'll hear that they are quintessentially psych; loose and jangly with hip-shaking rhythms. Opener 'Nasty Sex' - their biggest international hit - works around a hypnotic riff and has a Cream-meets-surf rock tone; 'Shit City' cranks the free-spirited vibe up even further, while 'Platicas Con Un Rey' shows they could tackle a more pastoral psych sound, too. Few bands nail the true psychedelic rock sound this well.

Review: La Ruka is a prominent artist from Colombia's Pacific Coast. She blends hip-hop, salsa, Afro-Colombian roots and urban Latin genres in her music even though she is now based in Barcelona. Her live shows are always high on energy and tunes of hers like 'No Quiero Marido' and 'Todo Es Plata' are some of many standouts from the last 20 years. Her lyrics often focus on Afro-descendent women and life in Buenaventura and this new EP is another injection of Latin rhythms direct to your soul. Each one is sun kissed and percussive with irresistible production from the likes of JMoney, Village cuts and Lanzapro.

Review: La Sonora Mazuren, a vibrant force in Bogota's indie-tropical scene, infuses classic South American rhythms with a modern twist. Drawing on cumbia, chicha, guaracha, and champeta from Ecuador, Colombia, and Peru, the band skillfully merges traditional sounds with synthesisers and electric guitars. Their approach, guided by early innovators like Polibio Mayorga and Eblis Alvarez of Meridian Brothers, creates a psychedelic and forward-thinking blend reminiscent of Tropicalia's golden era. Their latest release, Magnetismo Animal, continues this innovative path. Recorded partly in rural Normandy during a European tour and finished in Bogota, the album explores the concept of animal magnetism as introduced by Franz Mesmer. Each track channels a shared trance-like energy through intricate rhythms and sound experiments. Drawing inspiration from Colombian gaita, vallenato, and cumbia, alongside Peruvian huayno and chicha, the album presents a futuristic take on Afro-Andean traditions with pulsating polyrhythms and psychedelic textures. Featuring members of Romperayo and LA PERLA, La Sonora Mazuren exemplifies Bogota's dynamic new tropical movement, merging past and present in a unique musical journey.

Review: L.A. Witch is back with a marked evolution in their sound that pulls in aspects of garage rock and post-punk while exploring existential themes of love, devotion and subservience. Recorded in Paris, the trio of Sade Sanchez, Irita Pai and Ellie English push their craft to new realms with icy instrumentation and introspective lyrics. Tracks like 'Icicle' channel early goth vibes while '777' delves into fatalistic passion. The album also, we're told, explores the symbolic connection between women and dogs with themes of sacrifice and loyalty. All this makes it rather menacing yet oddly romantic, so DOGGOD revitalises the band's trademark sound while taking them into darker territories with haunting overtones.
