It found the New York legend offering up six 7"s carrying iconic breaks used in seminal hip hop movie Wild Style. Well now you can cop something from that highly sought after box and enjoy it for yourself as the first disc gets its own individual release. The Brief Encounter and 1981's We Want To Play). Here Expansion Records continues the trend of delving deep into their catalogue by offering a new edition of 1976 single 'What About Love'. Review: Is there a more hard-working pair of party-starters than the Allergies' Rackabeat and DJ Moneyshot? The Bristol-based duo have been prolific over the last few years, yet the quality of their work seemingly hasn't suffered. Promised Land, their fifth album, is another invigorating, thrill-a-minute ride through hip-hop/funk/soul/rock/breakbeat fusion, where almost every cut is ripe for dancefloor plays. Highlights include the bluesy breakbeat bustle of 'Working On Me', the scratch-happy, Fatboy Slim-esque fun of 'Jumping Off', growling Dynamite MC hook-up 'Lean On You' (which reminded us a little of Plantlife), soul stomper 'Love Somebody' and 'Are You Ready', where Ugly Duckling's Andy Cooper and singer Marietta Smith both make their mark.

Review: Given that Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker's Cuba: Music and Revolution - Culture Clash in Havana is one of the standout compilations of 2021, hopes are naturally sky-high for this speedy sequel. Like its predecessor, volume 2 focuses on music and made and released on the Caribbean island between 1975 and '85, this time round largely focusing on rare fusions of salsa, Latin jazz, disco, soul and funk, mostly licensed from records that have never been available outside Cuba. It's another stunning selection all told, with highlights including the heady Cuban disco/salsa fusion of Orquesta Los Van Van, the fiery disco-funk of FA 5, the heavily percussive hedonism of Luis Carobonell and the fuzzy psychedelic rock of Grupo De Experimentacion Sonora Del ICAIC. In a word: essential.

'Pushover' is a powerful tune with driving rhythms backed by big horns as Jodie's beautiful vocals race along up top. It's steeped in classic soul references and is brilliantly unrelenting. On the flip side, 'Treat Me Better' is another belter, this time rolling a little deeper with empowering lyrics about searching for someone better over super tight stick work.

Released in 2015, Sound & Color took the blueprint laid out with Boys & Girls and then kicked up into fifth gear. It's soul. It's blues. It's sweat-soaked funk. Most importantly, though, it's the kind of record that keeps giving the more you listen, sounding equally at home in the 1950s as it does the 2010s.
It's hard to really put into words the level of husky, pained, heart-on-sleeve musicality at the core of this record. Brittany Howard's voice might never again sound as utterly distraught and reflective, pained and somehow filled with hope for a brighter day. Individual readings aside, this is among the finest blues records to land this century, and ranks up there with some of the greats of the 20th, so don't sleep on this edition complete with closing tracks recorded live at the legendary Capitol Studios.

Review: .No, this is not a surprise jazz-funk outing from Dan 'Caribou' Snaith, but rather a reissue of the sole single that French outfit Cortex released as Caribou, way back in 1977. Copies of that record are now very hard to come by, so it's great that Trad Vibe have delivered this fresh edition. It's worth picking up for 'Californie' alone. The track is a near perfect fusion of the Gallic ensemble's usual loose jazz-funk sound and energetic, sun-drenched disco - all breathless electric piano solos, memorable guitar licks, dancefloor-friendly grooves and spiralling group vocals. Original flipside 'Stevie', a more relaxed and loved-up affair closer in tone to Cortex's usual material, once again resides on the reverse.

Review: Back in 1980, Roy Ayers assembled the Eighties Ladies - a soulful vocal quintet whose members included sometime Aquarian Dream vocalist Sylvia Striplin. Sadly the group didn't last long, but their vibrant "Ladies Of The Eighties" single - a fine disco-tinged slab of boogie/jazz-funk fusion - became a big club hit. Their debut album, which is here reissued for the first time, is equally as impressive, with highlights including the rushing, part-rapped, attitude-laden "Tell Him" - later covered in the bruk era by West London outfit BB Boogie - cheery "I Knew That Love" and the liquid slap bass-propelled intergalactic space funk jam "It's Easy To Move" standing out. Throughout, Roy Ayers' production and arrangements are as tidy as you'd expect.

Review: Remote working is not new - artists have collaborated by exchanging files since Internet connection speeds allowed it - but few have pursued it more enthusiastically than Sons of the Sun, a duo made up of South East London beat-maker/multi-instrumentalist Maverick Quest and Texas-based singer and rapper JTronius. The duo initially met online and decided to spark up a Transatlantic collaboration. The results, as showcased on this fine debut album, are rarely less than inspired. Casually joining the dots between future soul, synth-powered P-funk, Afrobeat, jazz and hip-hop, it's a set that oozes musical quality from start to finish. At times it sounds a little like Plantlife or Thundercat, at other times like a hip-hop head's take on 21st century London jazz; throughout, you'll be royally entertained.

Review: Habibi Funk co-founder Jannis Stuertz first came across "the Holy Grail of Sudanese funk", Saif Abu Bakr and The Scorpions "Jazz, Jazz, Jazz", while browsing eBay listings a few years back. His interest piqued, he took a trip to Sudan to track down the musicians who had made a ridiculously rare LP that was changing hands for thousands of pounds online. Some four years later, his wish to reissue the set has finally come through. It was originally recorded in Kuwait in 1980 and brilliantly joins the dots between American funk, soul and rhythm and blues, traditional Sudanese vocals and rhythmic arrangements, and even a dash of Congolese soukkous. It's the first full album Habibi Funk has reissued, and with good reason: it's near perfect from start to finish.

Flip it over for the slightly more loose feeling 'Mr Meaner,' an instrumental version with the backing singers left in place to inject some human warmth to the lo-fi grooves.

Review: A short name hides a long story - Detroit-born Chad Hughs graduated from the same high school as Diana Ross, going onto become a multi-talented musician as well as a teacher and composer. The fourth release from cd exclusive vinyl pressers Jai Alai, collectors can now own this unique 7" containing two completely different sides of Sir Wick from his two albums. A side's title track 'Seal My Heart' contains the vocal talents of Sedalia Marie, with layered vocals and a baseline that makes this pure soul song feel deeply cinematic. The B side has been decades in the making, selected from a fully orchestrated musical in the works since 1996, finally being recorded and completed in 2017. These two tracks are deeply sentimental ditties of doting young love, and now two rare soul ballads from a musical luminary are available for the first time on a 45. Sunday Afternoon was their sophomore album and it came in 2021 following 2017's debut. This tidy 7" package features new Live On KEXP remix of the title track and it has sensuous saxes played in expressive fashion next to rousing horns and over the nice and lazy but dynamic funk drum work. 'On The Spot' closes down with a more lively percussive sounds vibrant stabs and plenty of big energy.

Review: Soul diggers rejoice, as an exquisite and insanely rare piece of treasure from Barbara Lynn comes back within reach of everyday folk. 'Mellow Feeling' came out in 1979 on Love Records, but it was clearly a very limited pressing given how scarce copies have been since, and how lofty the second hand prices reached. The hype is not without merit - this is a flawless slice of funked-up soul with Lynn on imperious form, and the two-part hit across both sides takes the groove deeper and further. Top work to Soul Brother dusting this one down for a fresh outing - it's a track that needs to be danced to.

Review: As they say themselves, Tramp Records is one of Germany's tiniest but funkiest record labels. That's backed up once more here with two versions of a super golden soul tune from Van Buren. This originally appeared on the label's mighty fine which was a various artists collection a while ago. It is a tune well worthy of its own pressing though: 'Bronco Queen' (vocal) has low-slung drums with sensuous vocal harmonies and tumbling funk basslines all embellished with some sunny day melodies. The instrumental on the flip allows those melodies and brass lines to really shine.

Review: Bootsy Collins' latest album 'Power of the One' was a real doozy and now it gets picked apart for some special 7"s on Japan's P-Vine. 'Hip-Hop Lollipop' (feat. Fantaazma) sees Bootsy doing what he does best, grooving, funking and bring some big fun to the funk. It is a remake of 'Club Funkateers' from the album with German Fantaazma that was first dropped on streaming services to mark Black History Month earlier this year. On the flip is 'Bewise' (FredWreck Remix) which was a Japan-exclusive CD bonus track when the album first dropped. It's a tight funk offering with West-coast production.

It was recorded originally in New York and now gets a reissue form the hard working Mr Bongo crew. It is a record that has picked dup cult status over the years for those looking for samples and has been pillaged by everyone from Diamond D, Puff Daddy, and Kool G Rap. Review: Mr Bongo's essential Brazil 45s series notches up release number 89 via a blast of heavy dancefloor pressure that touches on both Brazilian funk and samba-rock. On the A-side you'll find Golden Boys' 1975 gem 'Segura Na Cintura Dela (O Gaviao)', an irresistible slab of full-throttle, orchestra-sporting, Hammond-heavy samba-funk marked out by strong group vocals and some superb musical arrangements. Over on the flip you'll find another classic from the same producer (Milton Miranda), Silvio Cesar's 1971 carnival masterpiece 'Beco Sem Saida' - an infectious excursion that found fame in the 2000s when Drumagick sampled it on 'Sambarock'.

This is his fourth album in five years - third on Ninja Tune - and he's also turned out a lush entry into the Late Night Tales series. His soulful tones remain a delight on these tracks, which feature elements of dub, house, and dub as well as his aching vocals and fine songwriting. The mood is the most vulnerable yet as a result of things he learnt about himself during therapy over the last two years. Dive in deep.

Review: Heroic Nigerian drummer Tony Allen put out this landmark album in 1984, but the sounds bare all the hallmarks of his best 70s material. The grooves are super chunky and many say the title track here is one of Allen's best ever tunes. It has a punchy hook and political sentiment that really resonates while the rest of the tunes are not too shabby either. There wired up with electronics next to the trumpets, drums and percussion and have a super cool Celluloid Electric Africa vibe as a result. A regal and dub version is included of that title track meaning this reissue won't hang around for long.

Review: Funk Night cop a couple of fine funk gems here from Rickey Calloway. He is an r&b singer, as well as a rhythm guitar musician and songwriter from Jacksonville, Florida. His Tennessee Band helps him serve up funk that comes direct from the 70s, James Brown style. Review: Confunktion Records's Mr. Confuse links with Ferry Ultra on this tight new 7". It is a fresh and funky take on nu-disco from Ferry Ultra, who is best known for his work with greats like Roy Ayers, Gwen McCrae, Ann Sexton and Kurtis Blow. There are some strong summer vibes to this one with silky synths and cosmic vibes pervading the dubby, rolling disco beats of the excellent 'Discognized'. Review: Some high-grade re-edit action here, as dusty-fingered Chicagoan crate diggers Sadar Bahar and Marc Davis join forces with pal (and credited mixer) Rahaan on two fine tweaks of suitably obscure tracks. A-side 'Disco' is a groovy, funky, horn-heavy affair; a sumptuously string-laden, orchestrated blend of righteous gospel-soul, Philadelphia International style proto-disco and grooves reminiscent of those frequently employed on Steely Dan's most up-beat moments. 'Beat Down' meanwhile is a jaunty, percussive and sun-soaked slab of dancefloor-ready Latin jazz that speeds up as it goes along. The jazz dancers will love it!

Review: Manu Dibango's grooves will never dull with time. The Cameroonian sax man made some of the most infectious, feel-good funk to ever transmit from the African continent, and here's one of his heavy-hitting high-watermarks, reissued by Soul Makossa. African Voodoo originally came out in 1972, a year that saw nearly all Dibango's most revered jams cut loose on an unsuspecting public. These sessions were recorded in France with Yvan Julien on trumpet, Slim Pezin on guitar, Jacques Bolgnesi on trombone and Lucien Dobat on drums to name but a part of the line-up, but of course it's Dibango holding court on the vibes, marimba, sax and organ who brings the unmistakable magic to the music.

Review: The King Rooster are practitioners of deep funk and now come back strong with more of the same on the Basel-based label Burning Sole. They kick this one off with 'Bush Drop' which is a hard hitter featuring some superb organ work and great wah-wah top lines played by James Forster. Review: The long-running Mushi 45 label from Japan is back with another big serving of Afro-tinged funk. This 45rpm is limited to just 300 copies and features both parts of Afro Breed's Toootee. It is our first brush with this artist but we like what we hear here - 'Tootee (part 1)' has a James Brown-style take on funk with trilling acoustic guitar and tumbling drum breaks under big vocals.
