Lautlos (!Deladap remix 4 club)
Lautlos (Jeremiah remix)
Goldregen (NOHA mix extended version)
Lautlos (Dunkelbunt remix)
Review: The song "Lautlos" has a very special flair. DelaDap have written and recorded it in cooperation with the Berlin cult band 17 Hippies. Singer Kiki Sauer's very own style of mixing French, English and German text fragments mixed with the sound of DelaDap did create a strong feeling of multi-culture somewhere between chanson, Balkan sound and jazz. The 17 Hippies, who got known to a broader public especially with their soundtrack for Andreas Dresen's Movie "Halbe Treppe", was founded in 1995. Actually they wouldn't call it "founded", it was more an open come-together of several musicians from totally different backgrounds just to do some acoustic music for their own pleasure. The French press came up with the wording "Berlin Style" which is know synonymous for the 17 Hippie's mixture of eastern European melodies and rhythms with French chanson and American folk. Beside the original album version in radio length and a new DelaDap own remix, the new DelaDap maxi-CD also contains a remix from Vienna's rising Balkan expert [Dunkelbunt] and one from house specialist Jeremiah! As a special bonus it also comes with the highly demanded long-version of Noha's "Goldregen" mix.

You Keep Coming Back
Cat: RS 45 033. Rel: 25 Jul 16
You Keep Coming Back (3:15)
My Little Someone (4:16)
Review: 100% Pure Poison were formed in 1974 by nine American soldiers based in West Germany. During a period of leave, they popped down to Cannes in France to perform, were spotted by EMI Records, and were flown to London to record what turned out to be their only album, Coming Right At You. The record flopped at the time, but has since become sought-after amongst Northern Soul collectors. The two tracks here are taken from that set, and appear on 7" for the first time since the '70s. A-side "You Keep Coming Back" is a near perfect, heartfelt soul anthem- think eyes-closed vocals, sustained horns and Motown harmonies - while "My Little Someone" is a slower, more impassioned cut destined to soundtrack tender moments.

Sunday Avuncular (7:56)
Bauxite, Gypsum & Limestone (6:14)
Mononymous Persons (5:37)
Review: Tathan, Mensah and Dego get brow deep in bruk science once again with three supreme grooves. "Sunday Avuncular" is a rampant fire that's sparked with minimal elements but suddenly whips up into a full uptempo storm. "Bauxite, Gypsum & Limestone" is the smooth talker of the set with its soulful boogie tones and a momentum that gets more and more direct as the track develops. Finally "Mononymous Persons" concludes this special 12" with a staccato beat and groove so wet 2000 Black should consider selling special branded towels. Exceptional.

Straight Forward Side Steps (4:36)
Review: The band 2000 Black, who include 4Hero icon Dego among their number, are masters of the broken beat scene, leaders amongst men who whether working alone or with others are always in top form. This two track outing kicks off with 'Soursop & Mango', a bristling, bustling mix of raw drums and bursts of cosmic synth energy that radiates soul, all with neat guitar riffs stitched into the mix. 'Straight Forward Side Steps' is a dusty jam with lovely scruffy claps and much more well defined synth lines adding colour and soul.

Review: First played by Gilles Peterson, "Morning Child" is part disco, part neo-soul and part musical. It has a cinematic opening and the mythical voice of Carina Anderson. The b-side is a hot, soulful r&b styled track with the voice of US sensation J Davey. This is an essential 4 Hero release.

Do What You Like
Review: 400 Years Of What dropped this often talked about, but seldom seen, single on Counterpart Records back in the heyday of Black Power but the record barely made it out of Ohio. With original copies nearly impossible to uncover, it has only been through deep-pocketed collectors and DJs that anyone has gotten to hear the amazing A-side. Features a burning instrumental track with extended drum breaks and an irresistible groove. The B-side is just as strong, a funkadelic-esque stoned head-nodder with chanted vocals.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Minor creasing on outer sleeve, otherwise in perfect condition ***

44th Move is a project from talented pianist Alfa Mist and Richard Spaven, two of the brightest lights in London's current jazz scene revival. "We shared a lot of the same influences [so] we got to writing straight away" they say of their natural pairing. The music they come up with is lush, majestic, heart swelling, with broken beats and tender pianos. simmering chords and melancholic moods all permeating each of the sublime tracks. 'Hope' is a standout for its florid trumpet playing and 'Broken' is a real dancer for floors that know.

Review: "Everything Can Wait", by 4T4, features London singer Nina Babet. Remixes include a very deep house remix with a kicking TR-808 by Bobby Ewing of Shameboy and Discobar Galaxie fame. There is also a great disco-not-disco remix by 4T4 himself that sounds like a re-edit of some 1978 club classic.

Latin Freak
Playin Your Game
Review: Kay-Dee brings back to life an incredible band from Buffalo, New York, by the name of the 7 Miles Per Hour Band. 'At The Disco' is the lead instalment on this release; with sharp horns, fantastic vocals and not to mention the dancefloor presence this track has, it is no wonder why it has been given brand new life in 2006. 'Playing Your Game' offers more of a message of love, but still keeps a modern soul feel with its guitar back drop and uplifting vocals. Kay-Dee wraps up this release on the B-Side with the bass driven cut by the name of 'Latin Freak'. The drum work and horn arrangement makes 'Latin Freak' a must have for Funk and Soul advocates.

Havanna Strut
Bahia
Review: Our favourite two swordsmen, 7 Samurai, are back on Gamm - and what a comeback! This 12" has got something for everyone. "Modernization" is a rare modern soul cut reworked into a killer boogie stomper that should be a big number in the DJ boxes of Norman Jay, Bob Jones, Keb Darge and alike. "Havanna Strut" will be like a wet dream for all fans of Latin influenced funk music. Based on Cuban funk samples, gritty drums and raw salsa vocals, it's even better than it sounds! Last but not least we head down to "Bahia" where our boys fuses Brazilian jazz, dancehall beats and electronic basslines. Put simply - it rocks!

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Soon to be followed by two more from the mighty Ratio - ACR:EPC and ACR:EPR - EPA is the opening chapter in a triptych born from nothing. Or at least no fixed plan or specific agenda. A day spent jamming in the studio with close friend of the band and regular vocal collaborator, Denise Johnson, the recordings here and on the pair still to come represent the work they did that day, shortly before the world lost the woman in question forever.

Passing away in July 2020, well before her time, this is ACR paying tribute to another integral part of the Manchester music Factory. From the hypnotic and woozy 'Wonderland', where Donna Summer meets acid jazz, to the more straight-laced disco material - delivered with an edge you'd expect in terms of instrumentation and vocals - EPA is a fitting way to honour her legacy.

Persona/Funny Berber (9:57)
Vacation (9:54)
Review: Following an impressive, low-key cassette release on Kitty Play in 2016, Amsterdam-based artist Aan Zee makes the leap to vinyl with this appearance on Pleasure Wave, a label which has already made some waves with releases from g-Marie, Jonny 5 and Miskotom. The Aan Zee sound is a lot to digest, spanning all kinds of cosmic funk, sky-scraping electronics and outernational influences, often all fired off at the same time. Just sink your teeth into "Persona/Funny Berber" for a taste and you'll understand. "Vacation" is equally adventurous, with all kinds of melodic layering and instrument flexing in pursuit of an exotic new brew that doesn't shirk on the groove.

Jones Town Massaca
Jones Town Massaca (Apophenia Dubit)
Review: Emotional Rescue's trilogy of obscure reggae-disco reissues comes to a close with another killer, this time from former Studio One session man Richard Ace. Those with a passion for the genre will no doubt already know Ace's cheery 1979 cover of "Stayin' Alive". "Jones Town Massacre", though, is arguably even more potent; a rolling, floor-friendly cover of a Prince Tony number full of punchy, rum-soaked horns, jangling pianos, rolling beats and a killer bassline. As with the previous titles in the series, the flipside features an extended contemporary re-edit, with in-house crew Apophenia (AKA boss Stuart 'Chuggy' Leath and Soft Rocks' Piers Harrison) emphasizing the killer groove in a tough, dubwise style.

Love Makes A Woman
Review: A '68 Brunswick classic that's since been covered and sampled by many, Barbara earned her stripes as a backing vocalist on the legendary Chess Records. This, her sophomore single, brought her to the masses and has settled in many a digger's collection ever since. The slightly lesser known "Love Makes A Women" is equally as powerful, and comes with a rather funky swing. Fryers don't churn out represses like their peers... But when they do, they're gold.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Record has very light surface marks/scratches with creasing to corner of outer sleeve, but otherwise in perfect working condition***

Mario Acquaviva's 1983 jam 'Notturno Italiano' is a hugely sought after Italian boogie gem. Mother Tongue have dug it out the archives and enlisted some key names to offer up reworks and reconstructions, with Azymuth's Alex Malheiros and Daniel Maunick going first. They offer vocal and instrumental versions with life-affirming jazz Rhodes and cool, seductive rhythm sections that take you into the cosmos. Eternal deep house hero Ron Trent then does his escapist and spiritual thing on a lush and star-gazing dub that transcends genre. All three of these are irresistible.

Ostia 1982 (5:54)
Traffic Jam (4:09)
Foresta (4:17)
Review: Ad Bourke and Rotla are Italy's answer to Floating Points and the rest of the nu-school, nu-jazz crew. The two Roman beat soldiers are a constant presence on our radars, always keeping things fresh and in flux. They land head-high on the young and vibrant Really Swing label with these naughty three cuts, spread across two sides of 10" wax - our favourite format. "Ostia 1982" makes reference to Rome's decadent riviera and the italo-disco movement, where its 4/4 disco licks dominate the A-side with pride and mystique. "Traffic Jam" is a wonky boogie chiller with liquid-like electro bass tones, and "Foresta" heads down the jazzy pastures that these two usually like to indulge in; the tune is a magnificent excursion into a deep and chimerical world of percussion and ethereal sonics. Bliss.

Review: Addmoro were a lesser known Los Angeles-based disco outfit active throughout the late 70s and early 80s, and their sound was unique for its ahead-of-its-time weight and phonk, not to mention a difficult-to-match versatility, both traits evidenced by this Kalita reissue of the obscurity 'Rock & Roll Skate' here, first released on their very own Addmoro Records. The titular A-sider and 'Keep On Tryin' were released originally in 1985, with the former coming as a ploddy but groovy hard-hitter - which could've easily predicted the reams of modern-day producers who would the style on for size decades later (but not quite achieve it so well) - and the latter a surprise-taking curveball in a stumbly-funky, disco-electro mood.

Review: Adelle First luckily came up in the late '80s to early '90s tradition of cut-up house. 'Don't Give Up' is her defining moment; a precious South African disco piece that is unusually sensitive and detailed in disposition, and which features a brilliant dub mix on the B, that shows off every production aspect of this tried but true style with a startling sense of intricacy. First released in 1986, the flair of producer Tom Mkhize together with First's lolling vocals is once more put on display on this 2022 reissue.

Kuchi Kuchi (Adesi edit) (4:51)
Review: Exploring the sounds emanating from South Asia, Masaala is a new label with a fresh outlook. The first release features Manchester-based producers Raheel Khan and Adesi turning in some powerful edits that will appeal to anyone seeking invigorating sounds from further afield. Khan's twist on "Mast Qalandar" sounds like a striking version of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's "Mustt Mustt". Adesi offers up the lions share of the edits though, channeling South Asian sounds through grooves ranging from the fierce disco stomp of "Sansani" to the low slung funk groove of "Nah Nah Nah". "Kammata" has a more dense rhythmic complexity at its heart, and "Kuchi Kuchi" collides traditional sounds with contemporary broken beat to brilliant effect.

Review: Adesse Versions' second release combines a touch of Baile Funk with some classic Balearic samples, a touch of Dance Mania and deep, liquid house pads from the heart of Detroit. This can mostly be said for the A-side's "Color Talkin", while there's a stripped back alternative in "Drums Talkin". Not content with the one alternative there's a drum machine heavy rework of both tunes in "Leaving The '90s" while there's argument to be had that "Dread At The Controls" is a Jamaican riddim version made for a hot summer's dancefloor.

Bright Moments (5:40)
Spirit Boogie (5:25)
Deep Mantra (6:05)
Review: Bristol beat man Admin had a fine 2015, racking up releases on Sleazy Beats Recordings, Boogie Cafe and Banoffee Pies. By the sounds of this deliciously sunny 12" for the mighty Omena imprint, Admin is set to continue this rich vein of dancefloor satisfying form. "Bright Moments" sets the tone, veering off down a blissful jazz funk path where you can't tell what is sampled and what is being played live. Face down, the title cut is the one that DJs will pull for most thanks to the more pronounced groove, instrumentation and expert fx usage - what a sax sample! "Deep Mantra" closes out on a mid-tempo vibe, and has set closer written all over it. In a word: blinding!

Africa Is Not A Country Volume 1

Liquid Lagos (7:16)

Listen To The Beats Of Your Heart (4:43)
Who Own The Land (7:30)
Review: A warning for all us lazy catchall-ists, the concept of African music is thrown around far too readily here in the west. The continent is larger than mainland Europe, China and Australia combined and loaded with more styles than drum & bass has subgenres. Here are four more unique musical visions from the great continent; dubby highlife ("Liquid Lagos") shamanic lo-fi acid tech ("Fuji"), space disco ("Listen To The Beats Of Your Heart") and straight up wisdom ("Who Owns The Land") And if that's not enough to tempt you, all proceeds go to Human Rights Justice Group, Nigeria, too.

Zulu Walk Parts 1 & 2 (reissue)
Zulu Walk Parts 1 & 2 (reissue) (blue vinyl 7" limited to 200 copies)
Cat: 451028 COLOUR. Rel: 27 Aug 20
Zulu Walk (part 1) (3:55)
Zulu Walk (part 2 - instrumental) (3:43)
Review: If you missed this one when it first dropped in 2011, now's your chance to catch up on a serious slice of rootsy funk with some heavyweight players involved. Afrika Bambaatta teamed up with The Mighty Mocambos and Charlie Funk to record "Zulu Walk", and what a result. The groove is incredible, deep in the pocket and rolling forward with a mellow urgency that works for "Part 1" and the instrumental "Part 2" on the flip. King Kamonzi rides the beat on the A side in fine style, capturing a wild energy that wouldn't be out of place in the P-Funk pantheon. True-skool funk heads, don't sleep.

Confusion Beats
You Beats
Review: Edits don't get much more naked than this latest batch from the Afro Breaks camp. Both "Confusion" and "You" take an array of Fela ingredients and strip them right back to the bare carnal backbone. The results are super-spacious beat tracks coated in dubbed out flurries of activity. The lolloping bass and reverbed snare on "Confusion" will instantly hypnotise while the cut-strut guitar and percussive insistency on "You" will have hips shaking from the dancefloor right through to the smoking area. Bona fide beat treats.

Daddy's Groove (4:52)
Let Me Be Your Lover (4:40)
Review: Alex Puddu's Afro Soul Prophecy project continues to blaze into the year with pure molten lava grooves. "Daddy's Groove" is a perfect summer heater with its laid back horns that ooze over the wah wah licks and strutting rim-shots. "Let Me Be Your Lover" takes more of a Latin approach with its upbeat rhythm and bossa tendencies. Listen out for those cosmic guitars in the background... Dreamy business.
